Advancements in quantum communication and sensing require improved optical transmission that ensures excellent state purity and reduced losses. While free-space optical communication is often preferred, its use becomes challenging over long distances due to beam divergence, atmospheric absorption, scattering, and turbulence, among other factors. In the case of polarization encoding, traditional silica-core optical fibers, though commonly used, struggle with maintaining state purity due to stress-induced birefringence. Hollow core fibers, and in particular nested antiresonant fibers (NANF), have recently been shown to possess unparalleled polarization purity with minimal birefringence in the telecom wavelength range using continuous-wave (CW) laser light. Here, we investigate a 1-km NANF designed for wavelengths up to the 2-{\mu}m waveband. Our results show a polarization extinction ratio between ~-30 dB and ~-70 dB across the 1520 to 1620 nm range in CW operation, peaking at ~-60 dB at the 2-{\mu}m design wavelength. Our study also includes the pulsed regime, providing insights beyond previous CW studies, e.g., on the propagation of broadband quantum states of light in NANF at 2 {\mu}m, and corresponding extinction-ratio-limited quantum bit-error rates (QBER) for prepare-measure and entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols. Our findings highlight the potential of these fibers in emerging applications such as QKD, pointing towards a new standard in optical quantum technologies.

Filamentation has extensively been explored and is well understood at repetition rates <1 kHz due to the typical availability of multi-mJ laser systems at a moderate average power. The advent of high-power Yb-lasers opened new possibilities for filamentation research. However, so far, high average power Yb systems have mostly been explored to increase the driving pulse energy to several hundreds of mJ and not at significantly higher repetition rates. In this paper, we study, for the first time, long filaments at unprecedented high repetition rates of 10, 40, and 100 kHz using a 500-W Yb-doped thin-disk amplifier driver operating with sub-700 fs pulses. We compare the filament length, density hole, and fluorescence at a constant peak power but different repetition rates and find a strong dependence on filament length and density depletion with repetition rate. Our analysis reveals the emergence of a significant stationary density depletion at repetition rates of 40 and 100 kHz. The corresponding reduction in the breakdown threshold by increasing the laser repetition rate observed in our study signifies a promising avenue for enhancing the efficiency and reliability of electric discharge triggering in various scenarios. Using capacitive plasma probe measurements, we address the limitations of fluorescence imaging-based measurements and demonstrate a systematic underestimation of filament length. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of the interplay between laser repetition rates, filamentation, and heat-driven density depletion effects from high-repetition-rate high-power laser systems and will contribute to guiding future research, making use of filaments at high repetition rates.

Electro-optical sampling of Terahertz fields with ultrashort pulsed probes is a well-established approach for directly measuring the electric field of THz radiation. This technique usually relies on balanced detection to record the optical phase shift brought by THz-induced birefringence. The sensitivity of electro-optical sampling is, therefore, limited by the shot noise of the probe pulse, and improvements could be achieved using quantum metrology approaches using, e.g., NOON states for Heisenberg-limited phase estimation. We report on our experiments on THz electro-optical sampling using single-photon detectors and a weak squeezed vacuum field as the optical probe. Our approach achieves field sensitivity limited by the probe state statistical properties using phase-locked single-photon detectors and paves the way for further studies targeting quantum-enhanced THz sensing., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

The polarization state of light is a key parameter in many imaging systems. For example, it can image mechanical stress and other physical properties that are not seen with conventional imaging, and can also play a central role in quantum sensing. However, polarization is more difficult to image and polarimetry typically involves several independent measurements with moving parts in the measurement device. Metasurfaces with interleaved designs have demonstrated sensitivity to either linear or circular/elliptical polarization states. Here we present an all-dielectric meta-polarimeter for direct measurement of any arbitrary polarization states from a single unit-cell design. By engineering a completely asymmetric design, we obtained a metasurface that can excite eigenmodes of the nanoresonators, thus displaying a unique diffraction pattern for not only any linear polarization state but all elliptical polarization states (and handedness) as well. The unique diffraction patterns are quantified into Stokes parameters with a resolution of 5$^{\circ}$ and with a polarization state fidelity of up to $99\pm1$%. This holds promise for applications in polarization imaging and quantum state tomography.

Owing to a reduced solar background and low propagation losses in the atmosphere, the 2- to 2.5-$\mu$m waveband is a promising candidate for daylight quantum communication. This spectral region also offers low losses and low dispersion in hollow-core fibers and in silicon waveguides. We demonstrate for the first time near-maximally entangled photon pairs at 2.1 $\mu$m that could support device independent quantum key distribution (DIQKD) assuming sufficiently high channel efficiencies. The state corresponds to a positive secure-key rate (0.254 bits/pair, with a quantum bit error rate of 3.8%) based on measurements in a laboratory setting with minimal channel loss and transmission distance. This is promising for the future implementation of DIQKD at 2.1 $\mu$m.

Novel materials, with enhanced light-matter interaction capabilities, play an essential role in achieving the lofty goals of nonlinear optics. Recently, Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) media have emerged as a promising candidate to enable the enhancement of several nonlinear processes including refractive index modulation and harmonic generation. Here, we analyze the optical nonlinearity of ENZ media to clarify the commonalities with other nonlinear media and its unique properties. We focus on transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) as the family of ENZ media with near zero permittivity in the near-infrared (telecom) band. We investigate the instantaneous and delayed nonlinearities. By identifying their common origin from the band nonparabolicity, we show that their relative strength is entirely determined by a ratio of the energy and momentum relaxation (or dephasing) times. Using this framework, we compare ENZ materials against the many promising nonlinear media that have been investigated in literature and show that while ENZ materials do not radically outpace the strength of traditional materials in either the fast or slow nonlinearity, they pack key advantages such as an ideal response time, intrinsic slow light enhancement, and broadband nature in a compact platform making them a valuable tool for ultrafast photonics applications for decades to come.

The ultrafast changes of material properties induced by short laser pulses can lead to frequency shift of reflected and transmitted radiation. Recent reports highlight how such a frequency shift is enhanced in the spectral regions where the material features a near-zero real part of the permittivity. Here we investigate the frequency shift for fields generated by four-wave mixing with a nonlinear polarisation oscillating at twice the pump frequency. In our experiment we observe a frequency shift of more than 60 nm (compared to the pulse width of ~40 nm) for the phase conjugated radiation generated by a 500 nm Aluminium-doped Zinc Oxide (AZO) film pumped close to the epsilon-near-zero wavelength. Our results indicate applications of time-varying media for nonlinear optics and frequency conversion.

We investigate adiabatic frequency conversion using epsilon near zero (ENZ) materials and show that while the maximum frequency conversion for a given change of permittivity does not exhibit increase in the vicinity of {\epsilon}=0 condition. However, that change can be achieved in a shorter length, and if the pump is also in the ENZ vicinity, at a lower pump intensity. This slow propagation effect makes the conversion efficiency in the ENZ material comparable to that in microresonators and other structured slow light schemes, but unlike the latter no nanofabrication is required for ENZ materials which constitutes their major advantage over alternative frequency conversion approaches.

Quantum-enhanced optical systems operating within the 2- to 2.5-$\mu$m spectral region have the potential to revolutionize emerging applications in communications, sensing, and metrology. However, to date, sources of entangled photons have been realized mainly in the near-infrared 700- to 1550-nm spectral window. Here, using custom-designed lithium niobate crystals for spontaneous parametric down-conversion and tailored superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, we demonstrate two-photon interference and polarization-entangled photon pairs at 2090 nm. These results open the 2- to 2.5-$\mu$m mid-infrared window for the development of optical quantum technologies such as quantum key distribution in next-generation mid-infrared fiber communication systems and future Earth-to-satellite communications.

Electromagnetism and light-matter interaction in rotating systems is a rich area of ongoing research. We study the interaction of light with a gas of non-interacting two-level atoms confined to a rotating disk. We numerically solve the optical Bloch equations to investigate the how relativistic rotation affects the atoms' polarisation and inversion. The results are used to predict the steady-state stimulated emission seen by an observer at rest with the optical source in the laboratory frame. Competing physical effects due to time dilation and motion-induced detuning strongly modify solutions to the Bloch equations when the gas's velocity becomes relativistic. We account for the non-inertial motion by including acceleration-dependent excitation and emission rates, arising from a generalised Unruh effect. The effective thermal vacuum resulting from large accelerations de-polarises the gas while driving it towards population inversion, negating coherent driving due to the external light source. The results illustrate the intuitive, special-relativistic approach of assigning instantaneously comoving frames to understand non-inertial motion's influence when only local fields are physically significant., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Recent development in quantum photonics allowed to start the process of bringing photonic-quantum-based systems out of the lab into real world applications. As an example, devices for the exchange of a cryptographic key secured by the law of quantum mechanics are currently commercially available. In order to further boost this process, the next step is to migrate the results achieved by means of bulky and expensive setups to miniaturized and affordable devices. Integrated quantum photonics is exactly addressing this issue. In this paper we briefly review the most recent advancements in the generation of quantum states of light (at the core of quantum cryptography and computing) on chip. In particular, we focus on optical microcavities, as they can offer a solution to the issue of low efficiency (low number of photons generated) typical of the materials mostly used in integrated platforms. In addition, we show that specifically designed microcavities can also offer further advantages, such as compatibility with existing telecom standard (thus allowing to exploit the existing fiber network) and quantum memories (necessary in turns to extend the communication distance), as well as longitudinal multimode character. This last property (i.e. the increased dimensionality necessary for describing the quantum state of a photon) is achieved thanks to the generating multiple photon pairs on a frequency comb corresponding to the microcavity resonances. Further achievements include the possibility to fully exploit the polarization degree of freedom also for integrated devices. Materials with a spatially uniform but temporally varying optical response have applications ranging from magnetic field-free optical isolators to fundamental studies of quantum field theories. However, these effects typically become relevant only for time-variations oscillating at optical frequencies, thus presenting a significant hurdle that severely limits the realisation of such conditions. Here we present a thin-film material with a permittivity that pulsates (uniformly in space) at optical frequencies and realises a time-reversing medium of the form originally proposed by Pendry [Science 322, 71 (2008)]. We use an optically pumped, 500 nm thick film of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) material based on Al-doped zinc oxide (AZO). An incident probe beam is both negatively refracted and time-reversed through a reflected phase-conjugated beam. As a result of the high nonlinearity and the refractive index that is close to zero, the ENZ film leads to time reversed beams (simultaneous negative refraction and phase conjugation) with near-unit efficiency and greater-than-unit internal conversion efficiency. The ENZ platform therefore presents the time-reversal features required e.g. for efficient subwavelength imaging, all-optical isolators and fundamental quantum field theory studies.

In the framework of linear optics, light fields do not interact with each other in a medium. Yet, when their field amplitude becomes comparable to the electron binding energies of matter, the nonlinear motion of these electrons emits new dipole radiation whose amplitude, frequency and phase differ from the incoming fields. Such high fields are typically achieved with ultra-short, femtosecond (1fs = 10-15 sec.) laser pulses containing very broad frequency spectra. Here, the matter not only couples incoming and outgoing fields but also causes different spectral components to interact and mix through a convolution process. In this contribution, we describe how frequency domain nonlinear optics overcomes the shortcomings arising from this convolution in conventional time domain nonlinear optics1. We generate light fields with previously inaccessible properties because the uncontrolled coupling of amplitudes and phases is turned off. For example, arbitrary phase functions are transferred linearly to the second harmonic frequency while maintaining the exact shape of the input power spectrum squared. This nonlinear control over output amplitudes and phases opens up new avenues for applications based on manipulation of coherent light fields. One could investigate c.f. the effect of tailored nonlinear perturbations on the evolution of discrete eigenmodes in Anderson localization2. Our approach might also open a new chapter for controlling electronic and vibrational couplings in 2D-spectroscopy3 by the geometrical optical arrangement.

The invariance of the speed of light implies a series of consequences related to our perception of simultaneity and of time itself. Whilst these consequences are experimentally well studied for subluminal speeds, the kinematics of superluminal motion lack direct evidence. Using high temporal resolution imaging techniques, we demonstrate that if a source approaches an observer at superluminal speeds, the temporal ordering of events is inverted and its image appears to propagate backwards. If the source changes its speed, crossing the interface between sub- and super-luminal propagation, we observe image pair annihilation and creation. These results show that it is not possible to unambiguously determine the kinematics of an event from imaging and time-resolved measurements alone.

Deeply sub-wavelength two-dimensional films may exhibit extraordinarily strong nonlinear effects. Here we show that 2D films exhibit the remarkable property of a phase-controllable nonlinearity, i.e., the amplitude of the nonlinear polarisation wave in the medium can be controlled via the pump beam phase and determines whether a probe beam will "feel" or not the nonlinearity. This is in stark contrast to bulk nonlinearites where propagation in the medium averages out any such phase dependence. We perform a series of experiments in graphene that highlight some of the consequences of the optical nonlinearity phase-dependence, {such as} the coherent control of nonlinearly diffracted beams, single-pump-beam {induced} phase-conjugation and the demonstration of a nonlinear mirror characterised by negative reflection. The observed phase sensitivity is not specific to graphene but rather is solely a result of the dimensionality and is therefore expected in all 2D materials., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We propose an all-optical Knife Edge characterization technique and we demonstrate its working principle by characterizing the sub-{\lambda} features of a spatially modulated Terahertz source directly on the nonlinear crystal employed for the Terahertz generation.

Quantum gases of atoms and exciton-polaritons are nowadays a well established theoretical and experimental tool for fundamental studies of quantum many-body physics and suggest promising applications to quantum computing. Given their technological complexity, it is of paramount interest to devise other systems where such quantum many-body physics can be investigated at a lesser technological expense. Here we examine a relatively well-known system of laser light propagating through thermo-optical defocusing media: based on a hydrodynamical description of light as a quantum fluid of interacting photons, we investigate such systems as a valid, room temperature alternative to atomic or exciton-polariton condensates for studies of many-body physics. First, we show that by using a technique traditionally used in oceanography, it is possible to perform a direct measurement of the single-particle part of the dispersion relation of the elementary excitations on top of the photon fluid and to detect its global flow. Then, using a pump-and-probe set-up, we investigate the collective nature of low-wavevector sound modes of the fluid and observe signatures of superfluid behaviour.

We report an integrated all-optical radio frequency spectrum analyzer based on a ~ 4cm long doped silica glass waveguide, with a bandwidth greater than 2.5 THz. We use this device to characterize the intensity power spectrum of ultrahigh repetition rate mode-locked lasers at repetition rates up to 400 GHz, and observe dynamic noise related behavior not observable with other techniques., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 29 references

We report a novel geometry for OPOs based on nonlinear microcavity resonators. This approach relies on a self-locked scheme that enables OPO emission without the need for thermal locking of the pump laser to the microcavity resonance. By exploiting a CMOS-compatible microring resonator, we achieve oscillation with a complete absence of shutting down, or self-terminating behavior, a very common occurrence in externally pumped OPOs. Further, this scheme consistently produces very wide bandwidth (>300nm, limited by our experimental set-up) combs that oscillate at a spacing of the FSR of the micro cavity resonance., Comment: 9 pages 32 references 5 figures

We report an integrated photon pair source based on a CMOS-compatible microring resonator that generates multiple, simultaneous, and independent photon pairs at different wavelengths in a frequency comb compatible with fiber communication wavelength division multiplexing channels (200 GHz channel separation) and with a linewidth that is compatible with quantum memories (110 MHz). It operates in a self-locked pump configuration, avoiding the need for active stabilization, making it extremely robust even at very low power levels., Comment: 11 pagers, 6 figures

We investigate the spatially and temporally resolved four-wave mixing of terahertz fields and optical pulses in large band-gap dielectrics, such as diamond. We show that it is possible to perform beam profiling and space-time resolved mapping of terahertz fields with sub-wavelength THz resolution by encoding the spatial information into an optical signal, which can then be recorded by a standard CCD camera.

Frequency conversion by means of Kerr-nonlinearity is one of the most common and exploited nonlinear optical processes in the UV, visible, IR and Mid-IR spectral regions. Here we show that wave mixing of an optical field and a Terahertz wave can be achieved in diamond, resulting in the frequency conversion of the THz radiation either by sum- or difference-frequency generation. In the latter case, we show that this process is phase-matched and most efficient in a counter-propagating geometry.

Laser-induced ionization is a fundamental tool for the frequency conversion of lasers into spectral regions so far inaccessible, including both extreme ultraviolet and terahertz. The low-frequency currents induced by laser-driven ionization generate extremely broadband, single-cycle terahertz pulses, with applications ranging from remote sensing to optical pulse diagnostic, yet strong limitations arise from the low conversion efficiencies of this mechanism. We show a remarkable increase of the radiated terahertz energy with the laser wavelength and we relate this observation to the stronger action of long-wavelength fields on ionization-induced free-carriers. Ultimately, the use of mid-infrared pulses instead of the near-infrared ones employed so far enables the unprecedented table-top generation of the extremely high terahertz fields (>4 MV/cm) required for, e.g. the optical manipulation of quantum states, attosecond pulse synthesis and time-resolved studies of ultrafast electron dynamics. Furthermore, such high fields allowed us to perform space-time resolved terahertz diagnostics exploiting standard optical components.

We propose a new experimental technique, which allows for a complete characterization of ultrashort optical pulses both in space and in time. Combining the well-known Frequency-Resolved-Optical-Gating technique for the retrieval of the temporal profile of the pulse with a measurement of the near-field made with an Hartmann-Shack sensor, we are able to retrieve the spatiotemporal amplitude and phase profile of a Bessel-X pulse. By following the pulse evolution along the propagation direction we highlight the superluminal propagation of the pulse peak.

We propose a revisitation of the original experiment performed by H. Hertz in 1888. With a simple setup it is possible to produce electromagnetic waves with a frequency in the range of 3 MHz. By performing Fourier analysis of the signal captured by a resonant antenna it is possible to study the behaviour of the RLC series circuit, frequency splitting of coupled resonances and finally the characteristics of the near-field emitted by the loop antenna.
