Abstract

Fusion energy is an appealing option for future energy generation, but also presents unique design challenges. The UK Atomic Energy Authority is leading the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) programme to build a fusion power plant capable of net electricity generation. This work addresses the use of dynamic models in an optimization framework for the design of the thermal power generation cycle for STEP. The optimization of a proportional-integral-derivative controller regulating the power output of a steam Rankine cycle with a coupled thermal energy storage system is presented. A lumped-parameter dynamic model of the system has been implemented. The effectiveness of a controller design is evaluated by simulating the system under a perturbation to the power demand on the system. By minimizing the mean absolute power deviation, there is a reduction of 97 % compared to the initial controller design, as well as a reduction of 95 % in the maximum absolute power deviation and a faster return to setpoint. The optimized design does introduce more oscillations in the system, which are undesirable for control systems and are challenging for the optimization procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Christian education and Christian formation (participation in Christian practice) are two approaches to faith nurture that have been embraced by the church. Each approach has a body of literature that describes and examines its respective approach. While both approaches are good and appropriate for use in the discipleship and nurture of adolescents, neither approach fully accounts for what occurs during faith formation. Hans-Georg Gadamer speaks about the fusion of horizons as a hermeneutic event. The horizon of Christian education and the horizon of Christian formation can be brought into dialogue, toward the creation of new understanding. Moving both horizons into dialogue will serve to elevate the significance of vision metaphors in faith formation. The perception of theological beauty plays a significant role in faith formation, unattended to by either contributing horizon's discourse. Theological beauty is represented to adolescents through the content of Christian teaching. The theological beauty is encountered by adolescents through formative practices of the church. In both cases the experience of beauty trains the attention and imagination on God. The theological beauty encountered in both avenues of nurture is the beauty of God’s own being. Theological beauty is perceived in part through language and discourse. Language is interpretive and disclosive. Careful descriptive discourse provides theological perception that is necessary for the Christian life. Language calls attention to theological beauty and theological beauty sustains this attention. At a life stage where abstract thought is beginning to develop, adolescents are beginning to be able to appreciate symbolic beauty. It is at this developmental stage that a sense of theological beauty and wonder can begin to be cultivated. Accompanying the discussion about the place of descriptive discourse is the guiding metaphor of the curator. The curatorial image represents ministry practice that carves out space for the encounter and appreciation of theological beauty. The “theological curator” draws young people’s attentions to the beauty of God's character, and the beauty of God’s personal call to them. Abstract

Despite the number of virulent pathogens that are projected to benefit from global change and to spread in the next century, we suggest that a combination of coextinction risk and climate sensitivity could make parasites at least as extinction prone as any other trophic group. However, the existing interdisciplinary toolbox for identifying species threatened by climate change is inadequate or inappropriate when considering parasites as conservation targets. A functional trait approach can be used to connect parasites' ecological role to their risk of disappearance, but this is complicated by the taxonomic and functional diversity of many parasite clades. Here, we propose biological traits that may render parasite species particularly vulnerable to extinction (including high host specificity, complex life cycles and narrow climatic tolerance), and identify critical gaps in our knowledge of parasite biology and ecology. By doing so, we provide criteria to identify vulnerable parasite species and triage parasite conservation efforts.

Abstract

Churches have often struggled to nurture mature and lasting faith among their young people. This is generally due to a lack of understanding about how beliefs form in adolescents and therefore the ability to shape ministry accordingly. This thesis proposes that adolescents form and mature their beliefs by interpreting significant life experiences. This thesis also offers suggestions for the practice for ministry based upon this understanding of belief formation. Abstract

In the presence of germination signals, dormant spores of Dictyostelium discoideumrapidly germinate to start a new life cycle. Previously we have shown that half of the actin molecules in spores are maintained in a tyrosine-phosphorylated state, and a decline of the actin phosphorylation levels is a prerequisite for spore swelling. In this study, we have established d-glucose as a trigger molecule for the actin dephosphorylation. Present in a nutrient germination medium, d-glucose both may act as a trigger molecule and/or may serve as a substrate within a pathway for actin dephosphorylation depending upon spore age. However, the glucose-induced actin dephosphorylation was insufficient for spores to swell. Other factors in the nutrient medium were required for complete germination of young spores aged 1 to 5 days. In contrast, dispersion in nonnutrient buffer was necessary and sufficient for a decline of actin phosphorylation levels and even the emergence of amoebae in older spores (6 days and beyond). Moreover, the dephosphorylation pathway in the older spores was independent of energy production. We propose that the diversification of the actin dephosphorylation pathway may enable spores to increase their probability of germination upon spore aging.

50. Genotoxicity of select herbicides in <TOGGLE>Rana catesbeiana</TOGGLE> tadpoles using the alkaline single-cell gel DNA electrophoresis (comet) assay

Abstract

Pesticides are broadly used for pest control in agriculture despite possible negative impacts they may pose to the environment. Thus, we examined the DNA damage caused by five herbicides commonly used in southern Ontario (Canada). Erythrocytes from Rana catesbeiana (bullfrog) tadpoles were evaluated for DNA damage following exposure to selected herbicides, using the alkaline single-cell gel DNA electrophoresis (SCG) or “comet” assay [Singh et al. (1988): Exp Cell Res 175:184–191; Ralph et al. (1996): Eviron Mol Mutagen 28:112–120]. This approach involves detection, under alkaline conditions, of DNA fragments that upon electrophoresis migrate from the nuclear core, resulting in a comet formation. The herbicides tested, along with their active ingredients, were AAtrex Nine-O (atrazine), Dual-960E (metalochlor), Roundup(glyphosate), Sencor-500F (metribuzin), and Amsol (2,4-D amine). Tadpoles were exposed in the laboratory for a 24-hr period to several concentrations of the herbicides dissolved in dechlorinated water. Methyl methanesulphonate was used as a positive control. The herbicides AAtrex Nine-O-, Dual-960E-,Roundup-, and Sencor-500F-treated tadpolesshowed significant DNA damage when compared with unexposed control animals, whereas, Amsol-treated tadpoles did not. Unlike the other responding herbicides, Sencor-500F did not show a relationship between dosage and DNA damage. In summary, the results indicate that at least some of the herbicides currently used in southern Ontario are capable of inducing DNA damage in tadpoles. Environ. Mol.
