R-Phycoerythrin is one of the phycobiliproteins widely found in seaweeds. In this study, we have shown to extract and purify R-Phycoerythrin from the south east cost Indian red seaweed Halymenia floresia. R-Phycoerythrin was extracted in 50mM phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). The preparative native PAGE purification was employed alternative to the chromatography and therefore can be scaled up efficiently. Both the yield and the purity of R-Phycoerythrin are very effective. The purified R-Phycoerythrin showed a single band on the examination by native PAGE electrophrosis. SDS-PAGE analysis showed five bands at 16kDa, 21kDa, 30kDa, 39kDa and 47kDa which corresponds to the α, β and γ', γ and αβ subunits. This preparative method for R-Phycoerythrin purification can offer a reference for R-Phycoerythrin purification from other marine red macro algae.

Alternative sources of anticoagulants have arisen as a result of the increasing demand for safer anticoagulant clinical therapy, and the sulfated polysaccharides of seaweeds have gained attention in biomedicine. In this study, crude sulfated polysaccharide fractions (denominated Hf1, Hf2 and Hf3) were obtained from the red marine alga Halymenia floresia and the anticoagulant properties of a soluble crude polysaccharide fraction (Hf2s) were assayed. The three differential extractions yielded 38.6%. The polysaccharides are composed mainly of galactose, with small amounts of xylose and glucose. The anticoagulant properties of Hf2s containing 53.8% sulfate and 3% protein was also compared to those of heparin (193.0 IU mg-1) by assays of activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and thrombin time (TT) using normal human plasma. Hf2s showed a higher anticoagulant activity (68.4 IU mg-1) than those of Hf1s and Hf3s, whose activities were 37.6 and 36.6 IU mg-1, respectively. The compound was less active than heparin, but its anticoagulant mechanism suggested that it is dependent on cofactor heparin II to inhibit thrombin activity, but not on cofactors VIII and IX. Hf-SP3 had the highest sulfate content (37.45%). Hf-SP3 was fractionated by ion exchange chromatography on a DEAE-cellulose column using a NaCl gradient. Fractions were lyophilized and submitted to 0.5% agarose gel electrophoresis. The anticoagulant activity was evaluated by the activated partial thromboplastin time using rabbits plasma and expressed in international units per mg of SP using standard HEP (193 IU mg-1). The chromatographic procedure separated into four different SP fractions (F I, F II, F III and F IV) eluted at concentrations of 0.50, 0.75, 1.00 and 1.25 M of NaCl, respectively, reveling among them different marked on charge density, when compared by electrophoresis. F III had the highest anticoagulant activity (10.72 IU mg-1), suggesting that the sulfate is important in this process. The peracarid Crustacea belonging to Cumacea, Tanaidacca, Isopoda and Amphipoda, inhabiting aegagropylae of Rytiphloea tinctoria were studied throughout a year in the Stagnone Sound (western Sicily, Italy). The dominant groups, tanaids (61.7%) and amphipods (32.8%), were represented by 6 and 28 species, and showed complementary trends during the 12 months, reaching their maximum of abundance in spring and autumn, respectively. Tanaids were mainly represented by Apseudes intermedius Hansen, 1895 and Parapseudes latifrons (Grube, 1864), and amphipods by Elasmopus pocillimanus (Bate, 1862), Leptocheirus guttatus (Grube, 1864), Lysianassa longicornis Lucas, 1849 and Maera inaequipes (A. Costa, 1857). These species, often found in open coastal waters, showed different seasonal trends in the Stagnone, probably in relation to their ecological requirements and life cycle. Evidence is provided that these aegagropyla formations are not only a temporary refuge for the peracaridan communities in the sometimes stressed environmental conditions of the Stagnone. In fact, they are a complex microcommunity where species are present constantly in both sexes and at all stages of development. The formations are also the result of an interaction between alga and peracarid crustaceans, which moreover play a major role among the other small invertebrates.

Objetivo: determinar el impacto de la intervención educativa en el cuidado de la salud bucodental en niños de 8 a 10 años durante la pandemia por COVID-19 en la región Ica. Método: se trató de un estudio de intervenciones comunitarias. Se incluyeron a 881 niños entre los 8 y 10 años inscritos en 4 colegios de la región Ica, que completaron el pretest y postets. El grupo experimental (781 estudiantes) y el grupo control (100 estudiantes). Se aplicó un pretest y postest a ambos grupos, y al grupo experimental se le aplicó las dimensiones: importancia de los cuidados de la salud oral, caries y enfermedad periodontal, técnicas de cepillado y sobre higiene oral; el grupo control no recibió ninguna intervención. Resultados: se apreció que en el grupo experimental la prueba pretest y postest fue positiva en 85.2 % y 91.1 %, siendo estadísticamente significativo p=0.0001. Se observó un impacto positivo en las dimensiones de caries y enfermedad periodontal, y técnicas de cepillado de un 77.5 % y 83.8 % en el pretest mejorando su nivel de conocimiento en un 86.4 % y 90.3 %. Discusión: los programas educativos sobre salud bucodental causaron un impacto positivo en la educación sobre salud bucal, mejorando el conocimiento y el estado clínico oral. Conclusiones: se evidenció un impacto positivo con el programa educativo dirigido a niños de 4 instituciones educativas en la región de Ica, Perú. Además, cada dimensión aplicada incrementó, mejoró y fortaleció los conocimientos y actitudes sobre la salud bucodental.
