Abstract

A study was done on the performance of Time Projection Chambers (TPC) in a high particle flux environment. Results show small measurements of distortions due to ion loading in the TPC even at very high effective particle fluxes. These findings indicate that TPCs can be used at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) even at the highest planned luminosity. TPCs were also shown to be excellent detectors for RHIC.

Abstract

A Large Angle Multiplicity Detector (LAMD) system composed of 240 ion implanted silicon photodiodes arranged in 12 pad arrays was developed to measure the charged particle multiplicity distributions from the energetic antiproton beam. The design and performance of the LAMD system were evaluated using extensive bench tests. Results show that the system can accurately measure multiplicity distributions.

Abstract

The effect of atmospheric ammonia on frost hardening of needles from 3- and 5-year-old Scots pine trees was investigated. Trees were exposed to various concentrations of NH(3) during different hardening stages under laboratory conditions and in experiments with open-top chambers under a natural hardening regime during winter. Under laboratory conditions, exposure to 250 nL.L(-1) NH(3) did nor affect frost tolerance, whereas hardening was increased in needles of trees exposed to 500 nL.L(-1) NH(3). In trees that were hardened in open-top chambers, frost hardiness was not influenced by exposure to atmospheric ammonia up to 106 nL.L(-1) Needle nitrogen concentrations in the open-top chambers increased with atmospheric NH(3) concentration. Needle concentrations of potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus were not affected by NH(3) and were within a normal range. The role of the nutrient status of the needles on the response of frost hardening of Scots pine needles towards exposure to atmospheric ammonia is discussed.

Abstract

The effect of atmospheric ammonia in combination with low and moderate growth temperature on growth and nitrogen metabolism of winter wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Urban) was investigated. Plants were exposed to 0, 1000 and 2000 nl l(-1) NH3 for 1 week at moderate day/night temperatures (18.5/15 degrees C) and subsequently for I week at low temperatures (4/3 degrees C). At moderate temperatures, NH3 exposure at 1000 nl l(-1) lead to an increase in protein content, but free ammonium, amino acid and total nitrogen content were not affected. Exposure to 2000 nl l(-1) NH3 resulted in a significantly higher amino acid, protein content and total nitrogen content, while free ammonium content was not increased. Net nitrate uptake rate by the roots was decreased by 21% and 34% upon exposure to 1000 and 2000 nl l(-1) NH3 respectively. Atmospheric ammonia did not affect biomass, carbohydrates or nitrate content significantly. Lowering the temperature to 4/3 degrees C resulted in an inhibition of growth. Ammonium, amino acids, and total nitrogen accumulated in plants exposed to 1000 and 2000 nl l(-1) NH3, while protein content was not increased at this temperature. At moderate temperatures winter wheat metabolized the atmospheric ammonia and counteracted the extra N input via the leaves by a reduction of the nitrate uptake by the roots. At low temperatures, the complete incorporation of ammonia was reduced, resulting in an increased ammonium and amino acid content. However, this disturbance of the nitrogen metabolism did not lead to any direct toxic effects. It was concluded that winter wheat is tolerant to high atmospheric ammonia concentrations, even under unfavourable growth conditions.

Abstract

The pp total cross section difference between pure transverse spin states was measured in the laboratory momentum range 1-3 GeV/c. Significant differences were found and these differences show striking energy dependence. This structure is in disagreement with the predictions of simple exchange models.

Abstract

Frost hardiness of winter wheat leaves (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Urban) was measured during an eight weeks hardening period using chlorophyll fluorescence. Determination of frost induced damage after freezing, measured as the decrease of photochemical capacity of photosystem II (F-V/F-M = (F-M-F-O)F-M), was compared with three conventional methods to determine the degree of frost damage: electrolyte leakage, TriphenylTetrazoliumChloridereduction, and visual assessment. There was a good correlation between frost hardiness measured by chlorophyll fluorescence and the other methods. Winter wheat leaves reached a hardiness of -12 degrees C within eight weeks of frost hardening. In unhardened leaves, electrolyte leakage and TTC-reduction measurements were influenced by supercooling of the tissue, which lowered the lethal temperature about 4 degrees C. Supercooling could be prevented by addition of small ice crystals. After one week of hardening the effect of supercooling was no longer observed, because the plants were hardened to a lower temperature as could be achieved by supercooling. It is concluded that the determination of the ratio of variable to the maximal chlorophyll fluorescence after freezing is a reliable and rapid method to determine the frost hardiness of wheat leaves.

Abstract

The first kinematically complete counter measurements of the D( π ± , pπ ± )n reactions in the Δ(1232) region are reported. Calculations based on low order diagrams compare well with the data. The ratio pπ + /pπ − depends strongly on the spectator particle momentum, and its behavior is qualitatively reproduced.

Abstract

Summary Background Data on patients with COVID-19 who have cancer are lacking. Here we characterise the outcomes of a cohort of patients with cancer and COVID-19 and identify potential prognostic factors for mortality and severe illness. Methods In this cohort study, we collected de-identified data on patients with active or previous malignancy, aged 18 years and older, with confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection from the USA, Canada, and Spain from the COVID-19 and Cancer Consortium (CCC19) database for whom baseline data were added between March 17 and April 16, 2020. We collected data on baseline clinical conditions, medications, cancer diagnosis and treatment, and COVID-19 disease course. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality within 30 days of diagnosis of COVID-19. We assessed the association between the outcome and potential prognostic variables using logistic regression analyses, partially adjusted for age, sex, smoking status, and obesity. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04354701, and is ongoing. Findings Of 1035 records entered into the CCC19 database during the study period, 928 patients met inclusion criteria for our analysis. Median age was 66 years (IQR 57–76), 279 (30%) were aged 75 years or older, and 468 (50%) patients were male. The most prevalent malignancies were breast (191 [21%]) and prostate (152 [16%]). 366 (39%) patients were on active anticancer treatment, and 396 (43%) had active (measurable) cancer. At analysis (May 7, 2020), 121 (13%) patients had died. In logistic regression analysis, independent factors associated with increased 30-day mortality, after partial adjustment, were: increased age (per 10 years; partially adjusted odds ratio 1·84, 95% CI 1·53–2·21), male sex (1·63, 1·07–2·48), smoking status (former smoker vs never smoked: 1·60, 1·03–2·47), number of comorbidities (two vs none: 4·50, 1·33–15·28), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 2 or higher (status of 2 vs 0 or 1: 3·89, 2·11–7·18), active cancer (progressing vs remission: 5·20, 2·77–9·77), and receipt of azithromycin plus hydroxychloroquine (vs treatment with neither: 2·93, 1·79–4·79; confounding by indication cannot be excluded). Compared with residence in the US-Northeast, residence in Canada (0·24, 0·07–0·84) or the US-Midwest (0·50, 0·28–0·90) were associated with decreased 30-day all-cause mortality. Race and ethnicity, obesity status, cancer type, type of anticancer therapy, and recent surgery were not associated with mortality. Interpretation Among patients with cancer and COVID-19, 30-day all-cause mortality was high and associated with general risk factors and risk factors unique to patients with cancer. Longer follow-up is needed to better understand the effect of COVID-19 on outcomes in patients with cancer, including the ability to continue specific cancer treatments.
