Search

Recently a two-step process has been proposed for the double-pionic fusion to deuterium $pn (I=0) \to d\pi^+\pi^-$. Its calculation is solely based on total cross section data for the two sequential single-pion production steps $pn (I=0)\to pp\pi^-$ followed by $pp \to d\pi^+$. Though this sequential process was aimed to explain the dibaryon resonance $d^*(2380)$ peak in double-pionic fusion, we demonstrate that this is not the case. It rather fits to a possible broad bump at 2.31 GeV in the energy dependence of the $pn \to d\pi^0\pi^0$ reaction, which was recently interpreted as a consequence of dibaryonic excitations in isoscalar single-pion production.

In arxiv: 2102.05575 a two-step process $pn \to (pp) \pi^- \to (\Delta N) \pi^- \to (d \pi^+) \pi^-$ was calculated by using experimental total cross sections for the single-pion production processes $pn \to pp \pi^-(I=0)$ and $pp \to d \pi^+$. As a result the authors obtain a resonance-like structure for the total $pn \to d\pi^+\pi^-$ cross section of about the right size and width of the observed $d^*(2380)$ peak at an energy about 40 MeV below the $d^*(2380)$ mass. We object both the results of the sequential process calculation and its presentation as an alternative to the dibaryon interpretation., Comment: Comment on arXiv:2102.05575

The isoscalar single-pion production exhibits a broad bump in the energy dependence of the total cross section, which does not correspond to the usual opening of the $N^*(1440)$ production channel with subsequent pion decay. In arxiv:2102.05575 it was interpreted as a narrow Breit-Wigner structure, which leads in a sequential single-pion production process to a possible explanation of the $d^*(2380)$ resonance. We demonstrate that such an attempt fails already, when confronted with the data base for isoscalar single-pion production. We investigate whether the observed bump structure rather points to the formation of dibaryon states with $I(J^P) = 0(1^+)$ and $0(1^-)$ near the $N^*(1440)N$ threshold. This situation would be similar to the situation at the $\Delta(1232)N$ threshold, where the signature of a number of dibaryonic resonances has been found.

Phase shifts and inelasticity parameters for $NN$ scattering in the partial-wave channels ${}^3S_1$--${}^3D_1$ and ${}^1S_0$ at energies $T_{\rm lab}$ from zero to about 1 GeV are described within a unified $NN$ potential model assuming the formation of isoscalar and isovector dibaryon resonances near the $NN^*(1440)$ threshold. Evidence for these near-threshold resonances is actually found in the recent WASA experiments on single- and double-pion production in $NN$ collisions. There, the excitation of the Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$ exhibits a structure in the energy dependence of the total cross section, which corresponds to the formation of dibaryon states with $I(J^\pi)=0(1^+)$ and $1(0^+)$ at the $NN^*(1440)$ threshold. These two $S$-wave dibaryon resonances may provide a new insight into the nature of the strong $NN$ interaction at low and intermediate energies., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Hexaquarks constitute a natural extension of complex quark systems like also tetra- and pentaquarks do. To this end the current status of $d^*(2380)$ in both experiment and theory is shortly reviewed. Recent high-precision measurements in the nucleon-nucleon channel and analyses thereof have established $d^*(2380)$ as an indisputable resonance in the long-sought dibaryon channel. Important features of this $I(J^P) = 0(3^+)$ state are its narrow width and its deep binding relative to the $\Delta(1232)\Delta(1232)$ threshold. Its decay branchings favor theoretical calculations predicting a compact hexaquark nature of this state. We review the current status of experimental and theoretical studies on $d^*(2380)$ as well as new physics aspects it may bring in the future. In addition, we review the situation at the $\Delta(1232) N$ and $N^*(1440)N$ thresholds, where evidence for a number of resonances of presumably molecular nature have been found -- similar to the situation in charmed and beauty sectors. Finally we briefly discuss the situation of dibaryon searches in the flavored quark sectors.

The excitation function for the $pd\rightarrow$ $d p \pi^{0}$ reaction has been measured by WASA-at-COSY experiment with the aim of searching for $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$-$\eta$ mesic nuclei. The measurement in the vicinity of $\eta$ meson production was performed using a ramped proton beam. The data analysis and interpretation was carried out with the assumption that the $\eta$-mesic Helium decays via the formation of an intermediate N$^{*}$(1535) resonance. No direct signal of the $\eta$-mesic nucleus is observed in the excitation function. We determine a new improved upper limit for the total cross section for the bound state production and decay in the $pd\rightarrow$ $(^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$-$\eta)_{bound} \rightarrow$ $d p \pi^{0}$ process. It varies between 13 nb to 24 nb for the bound state with width in the range $\Gamma \in (5,50)$ MeV.

Differential cross sections have been extracted from exclusive and kinematically complete high-statistics measurements of quasifree polarized $\vec{n}p$ scattering performed in the energy region of the $d^*(2380)$ dibaryon resonance covering the the range of beam energies $T_n$ = 0.98 - 1.29 GeV ($\sqrt s$ = 2.32 - 2.44 GeV). The experiment was carried out with the WASA-at-COSY setup having a polarized deuteron beam impinged on the hydrogen pellet target and utilizing the quasifree process $dp \to np + p_{spectator}$. That way the $np$ differential cross section $\sigma(\Theta)$ was measured over a large angular range. The obtained angular distributions complement the corresponding analyzing power $A_y(\Theta)$ measurements published previously. A SAID partial-wave analysis incorporating the new data strengthens the finding of a resonance pole in the coupled $^3D_3 - ^3G_3$ waves.

In the search and retrieval of multimedia objects, it is impractical to either manually or automatically extract the contents for indexing since most of the multimedia contents are not machine extractable, while manual extraction tends to be highly laborious and time-consuming. However, by systematically capturing and analyzing the feedback patterns of human users, vital information concerning the multimedia contents can be harvested for effective indexing and subsequent search. By learning from the human judgment and mental evaluation of users, effective search indices can be gradually developed and built up, and subsequently be exploited to find the most relevant multimedia objects. To avoid hovering around a local maximum, we apply the epsilon-greedy method to systematically explore the search space. Through such methodic exploration, we show that the proposed approach is able to guarantee that the most relevant objects can always be discovered, even though initially it may have been overlooked or not regarded as relevant. The search behavior of the present approach is quantitatively analyzed, and closed-form expressions are obtained for the performance of two variants of the epsilon-greedy algorithm, namely EGSE-A and EGSE-B. Simulations and experiments on real data set have been performed which show good agreement with the theoretical findings. The present method is able to leverage exploration in an effective way to significantly raise the performance of multimedia information search, and enables the certain discovery of relevant objects which may be otherwise undiscoverable., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures. The diversity of intrinsic qualities of multimedia entities tends to impede their effective retrieval. In a SelfLearning Search Engine architecture, the subtle nuances of human perceptions and deep knowledge are taught and captured through unsupervised reinforcement learning, where the degree of reinforcement may be suitably calibrated. Such architectural paradigm enables indexes to evolve naturally while accommodating the dynamic changes of user interests. It operates by continuously constructing indexes over time, while injecting progressive improvement in search performance. For search operations to be effective, convergence of index learning is of crucial importance to ensure efficiency and robustness. In this paper, we develop a Self-Learning Search Engine architecture based on reinforcement learning using a Markov Decision Process framework. The balance between exploration and exploitation is achieved through evolutionary exploration Strategies. The evolutionary index learning behavior is then studied and formulated using stochastic analysis. Differential cross section for the 1H(d,pp)n breakup reaction at deuteron beam energy of 340 MeV has been measured with the use of WASA detector at COSY-Juelich. The set of proton-proton coincidences registered at Forward Detector has been analysed on dense grid of kinematic variables, giving in total around 5600 data points. The cross section data are compared to theoretical predictions based on the state-of-the-art nucleon-nucleon potentials, combined with three-nucleon force, Coulomb interaction or carried out in a relativistic regime.

We report on the experimental search for the bound state of an $\eta$ meson and $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus performed using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup. In order to search for the $\eta$-mesic nucleus decay, the $pd\rightarrow$ $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He} 2\gamma$ and $pd\rightarrow$ $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He} 6\gamma$ channels have been analysed. These reactions manifest the direct decay of $\eta$ meson bound in $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus. This non-mesonic decay channel has been considered for the first time. When taking into account only statistical errors, the obtained excitation functions reveal a slight indication for a possible bound state signal corresponding to an $^3$He-$\eta$ nucleus width $\Gamma$ above 20 MeV and binding energy $B_s$ between 0 and 15 MeV. However, the determined cross sections are consistent with zero in the range of the systematic uncertainty. Therefore, as final result we estimate only the upper limit for the cross section of the $\eta$-mesic $^{3}\hspace{-0.03cm}\mbox{He}$ nucleus formation followed by the $\eta$ meson decay which varies between $2$ nb and $15$ nb depending on possible bound state parameters., Comment: Article accepted to be published in PLB

Rewards and punishments in different forms are pervasive and present in a wide variety of decision-making scenarios. By observing the outcome of a sufficient number of repeated trials, one would gradually learn the value and usefulness of a particular policy or strategy. However, in a given environment, the outcomes resulting from different trials are subject to chance influence and variations. In learning about the usefulness of a given policy, significant costs are involved in systematically undertaking the sequential trials; therefore, in most learning episodes, one would wish to keep the cost within bounds by adopting learning stopping rules. In this paper, we examine the deployment of different stopping strategies in given learning environments which vary from highly stringent for mission critical operations to highly tolerant for non-mission critical operations, and emphasis is placed on the former with particular application to aviation safety. In policy evaluation, two sequential phases of learning are identified, and we describe the outcomes variations using a probabilistic model, with closedform expressions obtained for the key measures of performance. Decision rules that map the trial observations to policy choices are also formulated. In reinforcement learning episodes, the rewards and punishments are often non-deterministic, and there are invariably stochastic elements governing the underlying situation. Such stochastic elements are often numerous and cannot be known in advance, and they have a tendency to obscure the underlying rewards and punishments patterns. Indeed, if stochastic elements were absent, the same outcome would occur every time and the learning problems involved could be greatly simplified. In addition, in most practical situations, the cost of an observation to receive either a reward or punishment can be significant, and one would wish to arrive at the correct learning conclusion by incurring minimum cost. In this paper, we present a stochastic approach to reinforcement learning which explicitly models the variability present in the learning environment and the cost of observation. Criteria and rules for learning success are quantitatively analyzed, and probabilities of exceeding the observation cost bounds are also obtained., Comment: AIKE 2018

In reinforcement learning, a decision needs to be made at some point as to whether it is worthwhile to carry on with the learning process or to terminate it. In many such situations, stochastic elements are often present which govern the occurrence of rewards, with the sequential occurrences of positive rewards randomly interleaved with negative rewards. For most practical learners, the learning is considered useful if the number of positive rewards always exceeds the negative ones. A situation that often calls for learning termination is when the number of negative rewards exceeds the number of positive rewards. However, while this seems reasonable, the error of premature termination, whereby termination is enacted along with the conclusion of learning failure despite the positive rewards eventually far outnumber the negative ones, can be significant. In this paper, using combinatorial analysis we study the error probability in wrongly terminating a reinforcement learning activity which undermines the effectiveness of an optimal policy, and we show that the resultant error can be quite high. Whilst we demonstrate mathematically that such errors can never be eliminated, we propose some practical mechanisms that can effectively reduce such errors. We propose a method for fast, deterministic resonator reset based on tunable dissipative modes. The dissipator is based on a Josephson junction with relatively low quality factor. When the dissipator is tuned into resonance with a high quality microwave resonator, resonator photons are absorbed by the dissipator at a rate orders of magnitude faster than the resonator relaxation rate. We determine the optimal parameters for realization of the tunable dissipator, and examine application of the dissipator to removing spurious photon population in the qubit readout resonator in circuit quantum electrodynamics. We show that even in the nonlinear large photon occupation regime, this enhanced resonator decay rate can be attained by appropriate modulation of the dissipator frequency., Comment: updated references

New data on the production of single neutral pions in the $pd\rightarrow{}^3\textrm{He}\,\pi^0$ reaction are presented. For fifteen proton beam momenta between $p_p=1.60\;\textrm{GeV}/c$ and $p_p=1.74\;\textrm{GeV}/c$, differential cross sections are determined over a large fraction of the backward hemisphere. Since the only previous systematic measurements of single-pion production at these energies were made in collinear kinematics, the present work constitutes a significant extension of the current knowledge on this reaction. Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $pp \to pp\pi^+\pi^-$ reaction have been performed by means of $pd$ collisions at $T_p$ = 1.2 GeV using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $T_p = 1.08 - 1.36$ GeV ($\sqrt s$ = 2.35 - 2.46 GeV), which includes the regions of $N^*(1440)$ and $\Delta(1232)\Delta(1232)$ resonance excitations. Calculations describing these excitations by $t$-channel meson exchange are at variance with experimental differential cross sections and underpredict substantially the measured total cross section. An isotensor $\Delta N$ dibaryon resonance with $I(J^P) = 2(1^+)$ produced associatedly with a pion is able to overcome these deficiencies. Such a dibaryon was predicted by Dyson and Xuong and more recently calculated by Gal and Garcilazo.

We report on the investigation of the rare decay $\eta\rightarrow\pi^0+\text{e}^++\text{e}^-$ which is of interest to study both $C$ violation in the electromagnetic interaction and to search for contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, since the allowed decay via a two-photon intermediate state is strongly suppressed. The experiment has been performed using the WASA-at-COSY installation, located at the COSY accelerator of the Forschungszentrum J\"ulich, Germany. In total $3\times10^7$ events of the reaction $\text{p}+\text{d}\rightarrow{^3\text{He}}+\eta$ have been recorded at an excess energy of $Q = 59.8\,\textrm{MeV}$. Based on this data set the $C$ parity violating decay $\eta\rightarrow\pi^0+\gamma^*\rightarrow\pi^0+\textrm{e}^++\textrm{e}^-$ via a single-photon intermediate state has been searched for, resulting in new upper limits of $\Gamma\left(\eta\rightarrow\pi^0+\textrm{e}^++\textrm{e}^-\right)/ \Gamma\left(\eta\rightarrow\pi^++\pi^-+\pi^0\right) < 3.28\times10^{-5}$ and $\Gamma\left(\eta\rightarrow\pi^0+\textrm{e}^++\textrm{e}^-\right)/ \Gamma\left(\eta\rightarrow\textrm{all}\right) < 7.5\times10^{-6}\ (\textrm{CL} = 90\,\%)$, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PLB

New data on both total and differential cross sections of the production of $\eta$ mesons in proton-deuteron fusion to ${}^3\text{He}\,\eta$ in the excess energy region $13.6\;\text{MeV}\leq Q_\eta \leq 80.9\;\text{MeV}$ are presented. These data have been obtained with the WASA-at-COSY detector setup located at the Forschungszentrum J\"ulich, using a proton beam at 15 different beam momenta between $p_p = 1.60\;\text{GeV}/c$ and $p_p = 1.74\;\text{GeV}/c$. While significant structure of the total cross section is observed in the energy region $20\;\text{MeV}\lesssim Q_\eta \lesssim 60\;\text{MeV}$, a previously reported sharp variation around $Q_\eta\approx 50\;\text{MeV}$ cannot be confirmed. Angular distributions show the typical forward-peaking that was reported elsewhere. Taking advantage of the high acceptance and axial symmetry of the WASA-at-COSY detector, and the high degree of the polarized proton beam of COSY, the reaction pp{\to} pp{\eta} has been measured close to threshold to explore the analyzing power Ay. The angular distribution of Ay is determined with the precision improved by more than one order of magnitude with respect to previous results allowing a first accurate comparison with theoretical predictions. The determined analyzing power is consistent with zero for an excess energy of Q = 15 MeV signaling s wave production with no evidence for higher partial waves. At Q = 72 MeV the data reveals strong interference of P s and P p partial waves and cancellation of (P p) and Ss*Sd contributions. These results rule out the presently available theoretical predictions for the production mechanism of the {\eta} meson., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Lett

This letter reports a first quantitative analysis of the contribution of higher partial waves in the charge symmetry breaking reaction $dd \to {}^4\text{He}\pi^0$ using the WASA-at-COSY detector setup at an excess energy of $Q = 60$ MeV. The determined differential cross section can be parametrized as $\text{d}\sigma/\text{d}\Omega = a + b\cos^{2}\theta^*$, where $\theta^*$ is the production angle of the pion in the center-of-mass coordinate system, and the results for the parameters are $a = \left(1.55 \pm 0.46 (\text{stat}) ^{+0.32}_{-0.8} (\text{syst}) \right)$ pb/sr and $b = \left(13.1 \pm 2.1 (\text{stat}) ^{+1.0}_{-2.7} (\text{syst})\right)$ pb/sr. The data are compatible with vanishing p-waves and a sizable d-wave contribution. This finding should strongly constrain the contribution of the $\Delta$ isobar to the $dd \to {}^4\text{He}\pi^0$ reaction and is, therefore, crucial for a quantitative understanding of quark mass effects in nuclear production reactions., Comment: 5 figures

A scheme is presented for engineering momentum-space entanglement of fragmented magnon condensates. We consider easy plane frustrated antiferromagnets in which the magnon dispersion has degenerate minima that represent umbrella chiral spin textures. With an applied magnetic field, we tune the Hamiltonian near a quantum critical point that is is signaled by a singularity in the entanglement entropy. The ground state develops momentum-space entanglement of the chiral spin textures. The size of the entangled superposition is accessible experimentally through the magnetic structure factor. Our model is motivated by equilibrium magnon condensates in frustrated antiferromagnets such as CsCuCl3, and it can also be simulated in spin-orbit coupled Mott insulators in atomic optical lattices and circuit quantum electrodynamics.

We present the first determination of the energy-dependent production amplitudes of N$^{*}$ resonances with masses between 1650 MeV/c$^{2}$ and 1900 MeV/c$^{2}$ for an excess energy between $0$ and $600$ MeV. A combined Partial Wave Analysis of seven exclusively reconstructed data samples for the reaction p+p $\rightarrow pK\Lambda$ measured by the COSY-TOF, DISTO, FOPI and HADES collaborations in fixed target experiments at kinetic energies between 2.14 and 3.5 GeV is used to determine the amplitude of the resonant and non-resonant contributions., Comment: 9 pages 4 figures

Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $pn \to pp\pi^-$ and $pp \to pp\pi^0$ reactions have been performed by means of $pd$ collisions at $T_p$ = 1.2 GeV using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $T_p = 0.95 - 1.3$ GeV ($\sqrt s$ = 2.3 - 2.46 GeV), which includes the regions of $\Delta(1232)$, $N^*(1440)$ and $d^*(2380)$ resonance excitations. From these measurements the isoscalar single-pion production has been extracted, for which data existed so far only below $T_p$ = 1 GeV. We observe a substantial increase of this cross section above 1 GeV, which can be related to the Roper resonance $N^*(1440)$, the strength of which shows up isolated from the $\Delta$ resonance in the isoscalar $(N\pi)_{I=0}$ invariant-mass spectrum. No evidence for a decay of the dibaryon resonance $d^*(2380)$ into the isoscalar $(NN\pi)_{I=0}$ channel is found. An upper limit of 90 $\mu$b (90 $\%$ C.L.) corresponding to a branching ratio of 5 $\%$ has been deduced., Comment: erratum: the upper limit for the branching ratio of the decay $d^*(2380) \to (NN\pi)_{I=0}$ is a factor of two smaller than given in the previous version of this article

In this work several semantic approaches to concept-based query expansion and reranking schemes are studied and compared with different ontology-based expansion methods in web document search and retrieval. In particular, we focus on concept-based query expansion schemes, where, in order to effectively increase the precision of web document retrieval and to decrease the users browsing time, the main goal is to quickly provide users with the most suitable query expansion. Two key tasks for query expansion in web document retrieval are to find the expansion candidates, as the closest concepts in web document domain, and to rank the expanded queries properly. The approach we propose aims at improving the expansion phase for better web document retrieval and precision. The basic idea is to measure the distance between candidate concepts using the PMING distance, a collaborative semantic proximity measure, i.e. a measure which can be computed by using statistical results from web search engine. The search for 4He-eta bound states was performed with the WASA-at-COSY facility via the measurement of the excitation function for the dd->3He n pi0 and dd->3He p pi- processes. The beam momentum was varied continuously between 2.127 GeV/c and 2.422 GeV/c, corresponding to the excess energy for the dd->4He eta reaction ranging from Q=-70 MeV to Q=30 MeV. The luminosity was determined based on the dd->3He n reaction and quasi-free proton-proton scattering via dd->pp n_spectator n_spectator reactions. The excitation functions determined independently for the measured reactions do not reveal a structure which could be interpreted as a narrow mesic nucleus. Therefore, the upper limits of the total cross sections for the bound state production and decay in dd->(4He-eta)_bound->3He n pi0 and dd->(4He-eta)_bound->3He p pi- processes were determined taking into account the isospin relation between both the channels considered. The results of the analysis depend on the assumptions of the N* momentum distribution in the anticipated mesic-4He. Assuming as in the previous works, that this is identical with the distribution of nucleons bound with 20 MeV in 4He, we determined that (for the mesic bound state width in the range from 5 MeV to 50 MeV) the upper limits at 90% confidence level are about 3 nb and about 6 nb for npi0 and ppi- channels, respectively. However, based on the recent theoretical findings of the N*(1535) momentum distribution in the N*-3He nucleus bound by 3.6 MeV, we find that the WASA-at-COSY detector acceptance decreases and hence the corresponding upper limits are 5 nb and 10 nb for npi0 and ppi- channels respectively., Comment: This article will be submitted to JHEP

A review is given about the long-standing search for dibaryons, i.e. six-quark objects, from the early days until present, when the first dibaryon resonance has been established, which has the potential of constituting a compact six-quark object.

Using the production reactions $pd\to {}^3\mbox{He}\,\omega$ and $pp\to pp\omega$, the Dalitz plot distribution for the $\omega \to \pi^+ \pi^- \pi^0$ decay is studied with the WASA detector at COSY, based on a combined data sample of $ (4.408\pm 0.042) \times 10^4$ events. The Dalitz plot density is parametrised by a product of the $P$-wave phase space and a polynomial expansion in the normalised polar Dalitz plot variables $Z$ and $\phi$. For the first time, a deviation from pure $P$-wave phase space is observed with a significance of $4.1\sigma$. The deviation is parametrised by a linear term $1+2\alpha Z$, with $\alpha$ determined to be $+0.147\pm0.036$, consistent with the expectations of $\rho$-meson-type final-state interactions of the $P$-wave pion pairs., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

The Lambda polarization, the analyzing power, and the Lambda spin transfer coefficient of the reaction pp -> p K+ Lambda were measured at beam momenta of 2.70 GeV/c and 2.95 GeV/c, corresponding to excess energies of 122 MeV and 204 MeV. While the analyzing power and the spin transfer coefficient do not change significantly with the excess energy, the Lambda polarization varies strongly and changes its sign. As this is the first measurement of polarization observables below an excess energy of 200 MeV, the change of the sign of the Lambda polarization was not observed before. The high statistics of the data (~200 k events for each momentum) enables detailed studies of the dependence of the Lambda polarization and the analyzing power on the center of mass momentum of the particles. The results of the spin transfer coefficient are in qualitative agreement with the DISTO experiment. The Lambda polarization data of 2.95 GeV/c are only conform with the DISTO experiment, while both the 2.70 GeV/c and 2.95 GeV/c data differ strongly from all previous measurements, whether exclusive or inclusive., Comment: Revised version as accepted for publication in EPJA

The $\vec{p}p \rightarrow pK^{+}\Lambda$ reaction has been measured with the COSY-TOF detector at a beam momentum of $2.7\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$. The polarized proton beam enables the measurement of the beam analyzing power by the asymmetry of the produced kaon ($A_N^{K}$). This observable allows the $p\Lambda$ spin triplet scattering length to be extracted for the first time model independently from the final-state interaction in the reaction. The obtained value is $a_{t} = (-2.55 ^{+0.72}_{-1.39} {}_{\textrm{stat.}} \pm 0.6_{\textrm{syst.}} \pm 0.3_{\textrm{theo.}})\mathrm{fm}$. Various theoretical calculations based on QCD or hadronic interactions predict that in addition to the recently observed dibaryon resonance $d^*(2380)$ with $I(J^P) = 0(3^+)$ there should also exist a dibaryon resonance with mirrored quantum numbers $I(J^P) = 3(0^+)$. We report here on a search for such a $NN$-decoupled state in data on the $pp \to pp\pi^+\pi^+\pi^-\pi^-$ reaction. Since no clear-cut evidence has been found, we give upper limits for the production cross section of such a resonance in the mass range 2280 - 2500 MeV.

We report on a high-statistics measurement of the most basic double pionic fusion reaction $\vec{n}p \to d\pi^0\pi^0$ over the energy region of the $d^*(2380)$ resonance by use of a polarized deuteron beam and observing the double fusion reaction in the quasifree scattering mode. The measurements were performed with the WASA detector setup at COSY. The data reveal substantial analyzing powers and confirm conclusions about the $d^*$ resonance obtained from unpolarized measurements. We also confirm the previous unpolarized data obtained under complementary kinematic conditions.

Motivated by recent interest in implementing circuit quantum electrodynamics with semiconducting quantum dots, we consider a double quantum dot (DQD) capacitively coupled to a superconducting resonator that is driven by the microwave field of a superconducting transmission line. We analyze the DQD current response using input-output theory and show that the resonator-coupled DQD is a sensitive microwave single photon detector. Using currently available experimental parameters of DQD-resonator coupling and dissipation, including the effects of $1/f$ charge noise and phonon noise, we determine the parameter regime for which incident photons are completely absorbed and near unit $\gtrsim$ 98\% efficiency can be achieved. We show that this regime can be reached by using very high quality resonators with quality factor $Q\simeq 10^5$.

The WASA-at-COSY experiment has collected $3\times10^{7}$ events with $\eta$-mesons produced via the reaction $pd\rightarrow{^{3}\textrm{He}}\eta$ at $\textrm{T} = 1.0 \textrm{GeV}$. Using this data set, we evaluate the branching ratios of the decays $\eta\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\gamma$, $\eta\to e^{+}e^{-}\gamma$, $\eta\to\pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$ and $\eta\to e^{+}e^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$. The branching ratios are normalized to the $\eta\rightarrow\pi^{+}\pi^{-}\pi^{0}$ decay. In addition an upper limit on a $CP$-violating asymmetry in $\eta\rightarrow \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{+}e^{-}$ is extracted.

A new high precision measurement of the reaction pp -> pK+Lambda at a beam momentum of 2.95 GeV/c with more than 200,000 analyzed events allows a detailed analysis of differential observables and their inter-dependencies. Correlations of the angular distributions with momenta are examined. The invariant mass distributions are compared for different regions in the Dalitz plots. The cusp structure at the N Sigma threshold is described with the Flatt\'e formalism and its variation in the Dalitz plot is analyzed., Comment: accepted for publication in Eur. Phys. J.A

Experiments at the Juelich Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) have now found compelling evidence for a new resonant state in the two-baryon system with mass 2380 MeV and a width of 70 MeV. The structure, containing six valence quarks, constitutes a so-called dibaryon, either a hexaquark or a hadronic molecule. The spin transfer from vertically polarized beam protons to Lambda or Sigma hyperons of the associated strangeness production pp -> pK Lambda (Sigma) is described with the depolarization coefficient D_NN. As the polarization of the hyperons is determined by their weak decays, detectors, which have a large acceptance for the decay particles, are needed. In this paper a formula is derived, which describes the depolarization coefficient D_NN by count rates of a 4 pi detector. Semiconductor quantum dots in silicon are promising qubits because of long spin coherence times and their potential for scalability. However, such qubits with complete electrical control and fidelities above the threshold for quantum error correction have not yet been achieved. We show theoretically that the threshold fidelity can be achieved with ac gate operation of the quantum dot hybrid qubit. Formed by three electrons in a double dot, this qubit is electrically controlled, does not require magnetic fields, and runs at GHz gate speeds. We analyze the decoherence caused by 1/f charge noise in this qubit, find the parameter regime for tunnel couplings and detuning that minimize the charge noise dependence in the qubit frequency, and determine the optimal working points for ac gate operations that drive the detuning and tunnel coupling.

Using the high-quality beam of storage rings in combination with a pellet target and the hermetic WASA detector covering practically the full solid angle the two-pion production in nucleon-nucleon collisions has been systematically studied by exclusive and kinematically complete measurements -- first at CELSIUS and subsequently at COSY. These measurements resulted in a detailed understanding of the two-pion production mechanism by $t$-channel meson exchange. The investigation of the ABC effect in double-pionic fusion reactions lead the trace to the observation of a narrow dibaryon resonance with $I(J^P) = 0(3^+)$ about 80 MeV below the nominal mass of the conventional $\Delta\Delta$ system. New neutron-proton scattering data, taken with polarized beam at COSY, produce a pole in the coupled $^3D_3$ - $^3G_3$ partial waves at ($2380\pm10~-~i~40\pm5$) MeV establishing thus the first observation of a genuine $s$-channel dibaryon resonance.

Recently it has been shown by exclusive and kinematically complete experiments that the appearance of a narrow resonance structure in double-pionic fusion reactions is strictly correlated with the appearance of the so-called ABC effect, which denotes a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the $\pi\pi$-invariant mass spectrum. Whereas the resonance structure got its explanation by the $d^*(2380)$ dibaryonic resonance, a satisfactory explanation for the ABC effect is still pending. In this paper we discuss possible explanations of the ABC effect and their consequences for the internal structure of the $d^*$ dibaryon.

Based on measurements the branching ratios for the decay of the recently discovered dibaryon resonance $d^*(2380)$ into two-pion production channels and into the $np$ channel are evaluated. Possibilities for a decay into the isoscalar single-pion channel are discussed. Finally also the electromagnetic decay of $d^*(2380)$ is considered.

We study spin-dependent heat transport in quantum gases, focusing on transport phenomena related to pure spin currents and spin-dependent temperatures. Using the Boltzmann equation, we compute the coupled spin and heat transport coefficients as a function of temperature and interaction strength for energy dependent $s$-wave scattering. We address the issue of whether spin-dependent temperatures can be sustained on a time and length scale relevant for experiments by computing the spin-heat relaxation time and diffusion length. We find that the time scale for spin-heat relaxation time diverges at low temperatures for both bosons and fermions, indicating that the concept of spin-heat accumulation is well defined for degenerate gases. For bosons, we find power-law behavior on approach to Bose condensation above the critical temperature, as expected from the theory of dynamical critical phenomena.

We propose an optimal set of quantum gates for a singlet-triplet qubit in a double quantum dot with two electrons utilizing the $S$-$T_-$ subspace. Qubit rotations are driven by the applied magnetic field and an orthogonal field gradient provided by a micromagnet. We optimize the fidelity of this qubit as a function of magnetic fields, taking advantage of "sweet spots" where the rotation frequencies are independent of the energy level detuning, providing protection against charge noise. We simulate gate operations and qubit rotations in the presence of quasistatic noise from charge and nuclear spins as well as leakage to nonqubit states, and predict that in silicon quantum dots gate fidelities greater than $99\%$ can be achieved for two nearly-orthogonal rotation axes.

Exclusive measurements of the quasi-free $np \to np\pi^0\pi^0$ reaction have been performed by means of $dp$ collisions at $T_d$ = 2.27 GeV using the WASA detector setup at COSY. Total and differential cross sections have been obtained covering the energy region $\sqrt s$ = (2.35 - 2.46) GeV, which includes the region of the ABC effect and its associated $d^*(2380)$ resonance. Adding the $d^*$ resonance amplitude to that for the conventional processes leads to a reasonable description of the data. The observed resonance effect in the total cross section is in agreement with the predictions of F\"aldt and Wilkin as well Albadajedo and Oset. The ABC effect, {\it i.e.} the low-mass enhancement in the $\pi^0\pi^0$-invariant mass spectrum, is found to be very modest - if present at all, which might pose a problem to some of its interpretations.
