Associate's degree completion is billed as the quickest way to upskill the workforce and a ticket to the middle class. Yet 35 million Americans leave college without a degree. Black and Hispanic students are more likely than White and Asian students to leave college. We examined whether economic benefits differ between those whose highest level of education is "some college, no degree (SCND)" compared to an associate's degree by analyzing interaction effects among race/ethnicity, sex, citizenship, and nativity. Using data from the Current Population Survey 2019 Annual Social and Economic Supplement, we employed regressions to examine heterogeneity in economic rewards. We also used propensity score matching to estimate causal treatment effects using observational data. On average, associate's workers reaped more economic rewards than SCND workers. In almost every category, the advantage of completing the associate's degree was lost when the worker held at least one socially disadvantaged identity. Economic disadvantage was multiplied for some workers who had more than one disadvantaged identity. Our findings support the economic value of completing an associate's degree and unmask the disparate labor market outcomes for workers of diverse races/ethnicities, sexes, and nationalities. 10. Examining Adolescents' and Their Parents' Conceptual and Practical Knowledge of Police Interrogation: A Family Dyad Approach

- Abstract
This study examines whether parents have the prerequisite knowledge about police interrogation that would allow them to compensate for youths' knowledge deficits, protect their interests, and buffer against their vulnerability to coercion. A racially diverse urban/suburban convenience sample of 77 11- to 13-year-olds, 46 14- to 15-year-olds, and 47 16- to 17-year-olds and their parents completed a semi-structured interview on knowledge of legal rights and police practices. Results show that parents know more than younger adolescents about components of the Miranda warning and its behavioral implications but do not necessarily know more about police strategy or the parameters of parental protection. Age and socioeconomic status were associated with youths' risk for poor knowledge. Among parents, IQ, race, and the child's age predicted risk classification. Parent IQ, socioeconomic status, and youths' justice experience, race, and age predicted whether families were classified as at risk for poor knowledge. The results question legal assumptions about parents' capacity for protecting youths' interests without intervention.

This mixed-method exploratory inductive study examined incarcerated youths' and staff members' perceptions of a new community-focused therapeutic model in a large youth prison. Via 18 focus groups (N = 141) and facility-wide surveys (N = 248), both youth and staff shared perceptions of specific structural components of the model designed to change their relationship to one another, such as consistent staffing, higher staff-resident ratios, and program features designed to enhance rapport. Both groups also provided rich descriptions of the altered interpersonal dynamics related to connection and caring, two of the five C's of Positive Youth Development (PYD), that were facilitated through those structural changes. Findings suggest the model's intentional redefinition of resident-staff relationships directly contributed to meaningful resident and staff experiences. Perceptions of those relationships—rarely explored in the extant literature—were examined and illustrated through focus group data. This study illuminates the subjective experiences of both groups as they put the model into practice and reveals key insights about therapeutic correctional programs based on PYD in secure facilities that have important implications for juvenile correctional theory, research, practice, and policy. Understanding the predictors of stalking victimization, help-seeking behaviors of stalking victims, and their reporting to police can help law enforcement and advocates improve systems and ensure they are accessible and useful to victims. Existing stalking research focuses heavily on campus-based stalking, non-nationally representative populations, and/or dated data collection methods, such as the 2006 National Crime Victimization Survey, Supplemental Victimization Survey (NCVS-SVS), an instrument that has been updated according to current stalking definitions. This study employs the latest 2019 NCVS-SVS to analyze its new stalking screening questions and additional variables. We identified predictors of (a) stalking victimization, (b) help-seeking from victim-serving agencies, (c) help-seeking from personal networks, and (d) reporting to police. Predictors of stalking victimization included younger age, identifying as female, identifying as not heterosexual, household incomes below $50,000, and any college attendance. Victims who knew their offenders (intimate or non-intimate) were more likely than victims of stranger stalking to seek help from victim-serving agencies and personal networks. Younger victims were more likely to seek help from personal networks. None of the variables we examined predicted reporting to police. This study shows the characteristics of stalking victims have stayed consistent over time but highlights an ongoing need for resources for victims of stranger stalking, who may not know about or be able to access stalking services that are offered by intimate partner violence agencies. Future research around stalking victim characteristics should focus on populations that are newly included in national stalking data, such as those who identify as transgender and sexual identity minorities. Content analysis using established media frames was conducted on newspaper articles from 6 of the top 10 circulated newspapers spanning a 4-year period from May 2012 to May 2016. A total of 819 newspaper articles from the Chicago Tribune , Los Angeles Times , New York Times , USA Today , Wall Street Journal , and Washington Post were coded using five media frames: conflict, human interest, attribution of responsibility, morality/accountability, and economics. Results show an increase in articles reporting on body-worn cameras (BWCs) and police following the events of August 2014 in Ferguson, MO, and that conflict (57%) was the most prevalent frame, followed by attribution of responsibility (52%), and morality/accountability (52%). Usage of the five media frames varied significantly by newspaper outlet. Findings inform police practitioners how newspapers are framing BWCs, allowing police departments to better manage public expectations of the technology and address officer concerns regarding media coverage. Bullying and school crime are important social problems that are receiving increased attention by scholars and policy makers. However, several critical questions remain unaddressed. First, does the public perceive bullying as a serious problem and judge schools—primary, secondary, and postsecondary—as safe or unsafe? Second, does the public use a "bullying lens" to judge school safety—that is, do citizens understand bullying as a serious threat to students' well-being? Third, are there racial differences in these perceptions? Prior research identifies racial differences in the prevalence of bullying, as well as in students' views of school safety and citizens' fear of crime. Similar racial gaps may characterize public perceptions of bullying and school safety. This study begins to illuminate answers to these questions by analyzing data from a representative sample of Virginians. Multivariate regression analyses produce several notable findings. First, we find that members of the public believe bullying in schools is an increasingly serious problem, and their perceptions of bullying influence their judgments of whether schools and colleges/universities are safe. Second, Black members of the public are more likely than persons from other racial and ethnic backgrounds to perceive that bullying is increasing and is a serious problem in schools, and, in turn, to judge that schools and universities are less safe. Our results indicate that members of the public see bullying as a principal threat to student safety. They suggest there is a strong reservoir of public support for antibullying initiatives and, more broadly, efforts to increase student safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Few studies have examined police interrogation strategies from suspects' perspectives, yet assessing suspects' views about interviewer approaches could provide important insights regarding confession decision making. The current study is the first American survey to assess a diverse sample of adult jail inmates' views on police interrogation tactics and approaches. The study explored US jail inmates' (N = 418) perspectives about how police should conduct interrogations. Potential dimensionality among 26 survey items pertaining to police tactics was examined using exploratory factor analysis. Group differences according to demographic and criminological variables were also explored. Four factors emerged, conceptualized as Dominance/Control, Humanity/Integrity, Sympathy/Perspective-Taking, and Rapport. Respondents most strongly endorsed Humanity/Integrity and Rapport strategies and were unsupportive of approaches involving Dominance/Control. Gender differences emerged for Dominance/Control and Humanity/Integrity, and Black respondents were more likely to value strategies related to Sympathy/Perspective-Taking. Suspects endorsed interrogation strategies characterized by respect, dignity, voice, and a commitment to the truth; they reported aversions to the false evidence ploy and approaches involving aggression. Overall, results from this incarcerated sample suggest that interviewees may be more responsive to rapport-building, non-adversarial strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Reproducibility is a defining feature of science, but the extent to which it characterizes current research is unknown. We conducted replications of 100 experimental and correlational studies published in three psychology journals using high-powered designs and original materials when available. Replication effects were half the magnitude of original effects, representing a substantial decline. Ninety-seven percent of original studies had statistically significant results. Thirty-six percent of replications had statistically significant results; 47% of original effect sizes were in the 95% confidence interval of the replication effect size; 39% of effects were subjectively rated to have replicated the original result; and if no bias in original results is assumed, combining original and replication results left 68% with statistically significant effects. Correlational tests suggest that replication success was better predicted by the strength of original evidence than by characteristics of the original and replication teams.

- Abstract
This study examined how detained youths’ (N = 98) actual experiences with the law, including frequency of contact with the police and knowledge about the Miranda warning and interrogation practices, relate to their perceptions of support, fairness, and trust toward the police. Results show that more police contacts were associated with lower perceived obligation to obey the law and higher cynicism toward the law and also moderated the relationships between age and police legitimacy and race/ethnicity and police legitimacy and procedural justice. Comprehension of the Miranda warning was associated with lower perceived obligation to obey the law and procedural justice, and knowledge about police interrogation practices was associated with lower perceived police legitimacy. These findings suggest the potential of legal socialization as a mechanism for intervention among offending adolescents; programs that promote positive youth–police interactions may help minimize negative attitudes and foster perceptions of trust and fairness toward the police. - Abstract
Reproducibility is a defining feature of science. However, because of strong incentives for innovation and weak incentives for confirmation, direct replication is rarely practiced or published. The Reproducibility Project is an open, large-scale, collaborative effort to systematically examine the rate and predictors of reproducibility in psychological science. So far, 72 volunteer researchers from 41 institutions have organized to openly and transparently replicate studies published in three prominent psychological journals in 2008. Multiple methods will be used to evaluate the findings, calculate an empirical rate of replication, and investigate factors that predict reproducibility. Whatever the result, a better understanding of reproducibility will ultimately improve confidence in scientific methodology and findings.

- Abstract
Police interrogation is a critical yet understudied social context in which juvenile suspects must make vitally important legal decisions, often without the aid of a parent or attorney. Despite the potentially grave consequences such decisions may yield, we know surprisingly little about this unique context. Social science lacks even basic descriptive information about the interrogation setting and its participants. While empirical interest in police interrogation has indeed surged in recent years, most research examines the interrogation-related capacities that suspects bring into the interrogation room or involves adult suspects only. Given the myriad developmentally based vulnerabilities youth exhibit via laboratory- and self report-based methods, interrogation research focused on adolescent suspects is imperative. Moreover, observational methods are a critical first step in creating a descriptive foundation upon which future juvenile interrogation research may build., The present study addresses these existing gaps by providing detailed descriptive data about juvenile interrogation procedures, participants, and outcomes. It is the first of its kind to examine electronically recorded police interrogations of juvenile suspects from jurisdictions across the United States using digital coding technology. Fifty-seven electronic recordings from 17 police agencies were coded to yield fundamental descriptive information about officer and suspect characteristics, third party presence, situational characteristics, Miranda delivery and readability, Miranda waiver, and interrogation outcome. Results indicate that juvenile suspects waived their Miranda rights in 90% of cases. The average juvenile interrogation lasted approximately one hour and was conducted by one or two (typically white male) interrogators. The typical juvenile suspect was a middle-adolescent white or black male accused of a serious person or property crime. A parent was present in 20% of interrogations and a defense attorney was present in no cases. Readability of the Miranda warning language, as measured by two prevalent indices, fell into the "fairly easy" range or at approximately a seventh grade reading level., This work was predicated on the notion that given the dearth of research on juvenile interrogations, a descriptive approach is paramount. It is hoped that the descriptive data presented here will provide a rich empirical foundation on which future inferential work may be structured.

The approximately 20% turnover rate among correctional officers in juvenile facilities adds undue financial and morale costs to facilities that already face budget constraints. This study used exit interviews (N = 173) from 2012 to 2015 from a state juvenile justice agency to examine factors impacting voluntary turnover decisions among correctional and non-correctional employees. Juvenile correctional officers reported lower levels of job satisfaction and voluntarily left the organization at a higher rate than non-correctional employees. Employees also significantly differed in their reasons to leave; correctional staff primarily cited concerns over safety and a desire to return to school, whereas non-correctional staff were more likely to leave due to retirement. Exit surveys were a valuable tool that allowed the authors to gain quantitative and qualitative insight into retention and turnover for juvenile justice agencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

WILLINGNESS to pay , *JUVENILE delinquency , *PUNISHMENT , *CRIME prevention , *PUBLIC opinion , *GOVERNMENT policy - Abstract
Public policy in the area of youth crime has periodically shifted back and forth between punishment and child saving. Generally, scholars believe that public opinion and youth justice policies are linked. It is also believed that crime salience—fear and perceived risk of victimization—is linked to public opinion about youth sanctions. To test these widely held beliefs, this study examines public opinion about youth justice policies by exploring the impact of crime salience on public support for child saving versus youth punishment. This study expands on prior literature by also considering the public’s willingness to pay (WTP) for the youth justice policies they prefer. Results indicate that fear increases punitiveness, WTP for youth justice policies generally, and, more specifically, the WTP for youth punishment. However, fear does not affect the public’s WTP for child saving. Limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
