This study aimed to assess different prebiotic concentrations and principles, in addition to calcium butyrate, aiming to replace colistin as a growth promoter. The sample consisted of 120 piglets weaned at 22 days old with mean initial weight of 5.475 ± 0.719kg. The animals were assigned to random blocks in six treatments corresponding to the use of the following dietary additives: T1) colistin (40 ppm); T2) β-glucan/mannan-oligosaccharides (0.2%); T3) calcium butyrate (0.1%); T4) β-glucan/mannan-oligosaccharides (0.1%) + fructooligosaccharides (0.01%) + galactooligosaccharides (0.09%); T5) β-glucan/mannan-oligosaccharides (0.1%) + fructooligosaccharides (0.03%) + galactooligosaccharides (0.07%); and T6) β-glucan/mannan-oligosaccharides (0.1%) + fructooligosaccharides (0.05%) + galactooligosaccharides (0.05%). The results showed no difference among treatments for the performance parameters in any of the phases evaluated. For diarrhea incidence and intensity, the results indicated that the treatments with alternative additives had similar effects as the group treated with colistin. A significant difference was found for the profile of propionic acid (0.23% colistin and 0.32%, 0.36%, 0.37% additives) and total fatty acids (0.67% colistin and 0.97% additives) values in the caecum. The supplementation with different compositions and concentrations of prebiotics and butyric acid may viably replace colistin in controlling diarrhea and modulating volatile fatty acid production in the caecum. RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as diferentes concentrações e princípios de prebióticos e do butirato de sódio, visando substituir a colistina como promotor de crescimento. Foram utilizados 120 leitões, desmamados aos 22 dias de idade, com peso médio inicial de 5,475 ± 0,719kg. Os animais foram distribuídos em blocos ao acaso, em seis tratamentos, que corresponderam ao uso dos seguintes aditivos dietéticos: T1) colistina (40ppm); T2) β-glucanos/mananoligossacarídeos (0,2%); T3) butirato de cálcio (0,1%); T4) β-glucanos/mananoligossacarídeos (0,1%) + frutoligossacarídeos (0,01%) + galactoligossacarídeos (0,09%); T5) β-glucanos/mananoligossacarídeos (0,1%) + frutoligossacarídeos (0,03%) + galactoligossacarídeos (0,07%); e T6) β-glucanos/mananoligossacarídeos (0,1%) + frutoligossacarídeos (0,05%) + galactoligossacarídeos (0,05%). Os resultados mostraram que não houve diferença entre os tratamentos para nenhum dos parâmetros de desempenho em nenhuma das fases avaliadas. Para a incidência e a intensidade de diarreia, os resultados apontam que os tratamentos com os aditivos alternativos apresentaram efeitos semelhantes aos do grupo tratado com colistina. Foi encontrada diferença significativa para perfil dos ácidos graxos propiônicos (0,23% colistina e 0,32%, 0,36%, 0,37% aditivos) e ácidos totais (0,67% colistina e 0,97% aditivos) no ceco. A suplementação com diferentes composições e concentrações de prebióticos e do ácido butírico pode substituir a colistina de forma viável no controle da diarreia e na modulação da produção volátil de ácidos graxos no ceco.

The objective of this study was to identify the degree of adoption of different production factors in commercial pig breeding farms in Brazil. Data were collected from 150 farms, totaling 135,168 sows, including general information, labor, genetics, biosecurity, facilities, management, feeding and productive performance for the year 2015. The farms were located in the South (42%), Southeast (45.3%) and Midwest (12.7%) of Brazil. The amplitude of the herds varied between 100 and 6,360 productive sows, with an average of 901. Their predominant profile was independent production with hired labor, an average of 88 sows per employee, facilities with more than 15 years and no reform in the last decade, and located less than 5 km from other units. Animal replacement was performed mainly by purchase and without adoption of a quarantine period. Predominated farms housed the sows in crates in the pre-mating period and in pens or crates/pens during gestation. Both solid and slatted floors were used in these phases, predominantly using concrete as material; the use of slatted floors (either concrete, metal, or plastic) predominated in the farrowing facilities. Gutter-type feeders that also operated as water drinkers were predominant in the pre-mating and gestation periods; in farrowing facilities wet-dry feeders were widespread. Two-thirds of the farms did not have a cooling system in farrowing facilities. For the piglets, the heating system above the animal (lamps and bell rings) prevailed to the detriment of heat floors. More than 60% of farms make their own feed and feed gestating sows once a day. Only 29.33% of the farms perform echography for diagnosis of gestation. Birth attendance was routine; however, one-third of the farms did not have attendance through the night. Batch weaning was practiced by 15.44% of the farms. More than half of the farms reported that they did not intervene in the colostrum supply of piglets born weak or small, but 95.33% piglets were transferred among litters considering their size and quantity. Teeth resection, tail docking, and surgical castration procedures were routine. The performance indexes were consistent with what is perceived by national surveys. Com este estudo objetivou-se identificar o grau de adoção de diferentes fatores de produção em granjas comerciais de reprodução de suínos no Brasil. Foram coletadas informações de 150 granjas, totalizando 135.168 matrizes, incluindo informações gerais, mão de obra, genética, biosseguridade, instalações, manejo, alimentação e rendimentos produtivos referentes ao ano 2015. As granjas estavam localizadas nas regiões Sul (42%), Sudeste (45,3%) e Centro-Oeste (12,7%) do Brasil. Os rebanhos variaram entre 100 e 6.360 matrizes produtivas, com média de 901. Seu perfil predominante era de produção independente, com mão de obra contratada, e média de 88 matrizes por funcionário. Predominaram instalações com mais de 15 anos e sem reforma na última década, localizadas a menos de 5 km de outras unidades. A reposição de animais era realizada principalmente por compra e sem adoção de período de quarentena. Predominaram granjas que alojavam matrizes em celas no período pré-gestação e em baias ou celas/baias durante a gestação. Tanto pisos sólidos como ripados eram utilizados nessas fases, predominantemente de concreto; na maternidade predominou o uso de pisos ripados, seja de concreto, metal ou plástico. Comedouros tipo calha, que também operam como bebedouros, eram os mais utilizados na pré-gestação e gestação; na maternidade comedouros com água incorporada eram bastante difundidos. Dois terços das granjas não possuía sistema de refrigeração na maternidade. Para os leitões, prevaleceu o sistema de aquecimento acima do animal (lâmpadas e campânulas) em detrimento a pisos aquecidos. Mais de 60% das granjas fabricava sua própria ração e fornecia alimento uma única vez ao dia para matrizes gestantes. Apenas 29,9% das granjas utilizava ecógrafo para diagnóstico de gestação. O manejo de acompanhamento dos partos era rotina, contudo, um terço das granjas não observava partos durante a noite. O desmame em bandas era praticado por 15,44% das granjas. Mais da metade das granjas relatou não fazer qualquer intervenção na colostragem de leitões nascidos fracos ou pequenos, porém, 95,33% praticava a transferência de leitões entre leitegadas considerando seu tamanho e quantidade de nascidos vivos. Manejos de aparagem de dentes, caudectomia e castração cirúrgica eram rotina. Os índices zootécnicos dos rebanhos avaliados condizem com o que é percebido por levantamentos nacionais.

The aim of the study was to monitor the evolution of welfare indicators of pigs throughout growing and finishing phases housed in a deep bedding system by principles of good health and housing. In all, 16,500 animals, distributed in 15 facilities, were evaluated over a 4-month period. Three assessments were carried out in each facility by a single evaluator, according to the following time distribution: phase one (75 to 85 days old), phase two (86 to 161 days old), and phase three (162 to 180 days old). Only the parameters related to good health and good housing were considered. Data were analyzed by logistic regression for longitudinal data. Poisson distribution was used on the coughing and sneezing data, with subsequent chi-square analysis. There were no cases of poor body condition, shivering, panting, huddling, tail biting, pumping, twisted snout, rectal prolapse, lameness, and skin conditions. The final evaluations were associated with greater chances of hernia and bursitis, with greater prevalence in males than in females. The prevalence of wound and manure on the body parameters was influenced by the interaction of the evaluation and animal category. The incidence of coughing and the number of animals presenting this symptom gradually increased, becoming considerably higher in the final stage of evaluation. Health-related problems change throughout the production cycle. The evaluation of a broad and reliable view on animal welfare allows for the most appropriate management of production systems using deep bedding.

This study aimed to determine the effects of increasing Methionine (Met) supply on growth performance and carcass traits of growing-finishing pigs under summer conditions in Brazil. A total of 200 barrows and females, 63 d-old (20.43±2.0 kg), were allocated in a 2 x 2 factorial design (two Met sources [DL-Met and OH-Met] and two Met doses [100 and 120% Brazilian Nutritional recommendation) with 10 replicates of 5 animals each. Corn-DDGS-wheat-soya based diets were formulated. Treatments were offered during four phases: growing I (63-93 d old), growing II (94-114 d old), finishing I (115-142 d old) and finishing II (143-160 d old). The recommended digestible Met levels were: 0.32, 0.30, 0.29 and 0.24% respectively for the four phases. Average temperature was 27.12 ± 4.51ºC and relative humidity was 61.72 ± 5.65%. Growth performance was measured for each rearing phase. Carcass yield, back fat height, loin depth, and lean meat yield were measured at the end of the experiment. Data were submitted to a 2-way ANOVA and Tukey test. There was no significant interaction between the Met source and the dose for all performance and carcass traits. Feed intake and feed conversion ratio were similar between treatments (P >0.05). The individual daily weight gain and live weight were better for the highest doses of methionine (P< 0.05) in all phases and on the whole period, except for the finishing II where the weight gain was similar for all treatments. Likewise, carcass yield, lean meat was increased with the highest dose of methionine in comparison to the adequate dose. No significant difference was found between DL-Met and OH-Met on growth performance parameters. OH-Met resulted in a higher loin depth (58.37 mm) in comparison to DL-Met (55.21 mm). Overall, these results demonstrated the interest of increasing Met supply under hot conditions to improving performance and carcass quality traits.

The aim of this study was to evaluate two feed additives, one based on encapsulated sodium butyrate (Adimix® Precision) (AD) and the other, a phytogenic (Apex® 5) (AX), associated or not with an antimicrobial growth promoter (tylosin) during the growth and finishing phases on performance, carcass characteristics and health conditions. A total of 300 barrows and females were distributed in six treatments in a randomized block design with ten replicates. The treatments consisted of a negative control (NC), positive control (PC) (tylosin), AD (encapsulated sodium butyrate), AX (phytogenic), PC+AD (tylosin+encapsulated sodium butyrate), and PC+AX (tylosin+phytogenic). The performance (live weight, daily feed intake, average daily gain and feed conversion) and carcass data (carcass weight, backfat thickness, loin depth, lean meat on the carcass) were submitted to ANOVA plus Tukey’s test, and the health conditions (occurrence of diseases, culling, and spontaneous deaths) were analyzed by χ2. Animals of the AD group had the highest average daily gain (ADG) over the evaluation period and the highest live weight at 120, 140, and 164 days of age, in addition to the highest carcass weight compared to NC and PC groups. The AX treatment increased the ADG in growth phase II and the live weight at 120 and 140 days of age in relation to the NC. The PC+AX group had a higher final live weight compared to the NC and PC groups and higher carcass weight in relation to the NC group. There was no difference among treatments for backfat thickness, percentage of lean meat in the carcass, or occurrence of diseases and deaths. The inclusion of encapsulated sodium butyrate (AD treatment) was effective in increasing ADG, final live weight, and carcass weight compared to supplementation with tylosin (PC treatment), as was the inclusion of a phytogenic (AX treatment) on FC compared to the PC. RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar dois aditivos alimentares, um a base de butirato de sódio encapsulado (Adimix® Precision) (AD) e outro a base de um fitogênico (Apex® 5) (AX), associados ou não a um antibiótico promotor de crescimento (tilosina), durante as fases de crescimento e terminação, sobre o desempenho, características da carcaça e status de saúde. Foram utilizados 300 suínos machos castrados e fêmeas distribuídos em seis tratamentos em um delineamento em blocos casualizados com dez repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram em um controle negativo (CN), controle positivo (CP) (tilosina), AD (butirato de sódio encapsulado), AX (fitogênico), CP+AD (tilosina+butirato de sódio encapsulado) e CP+AX (tilosina+fitogênico). Os dados de desempenho (peso vivo, consumo diário de ração, ganho de peso médio diário e conversão alimentar) e de carcaça (peso de carcaça, espessura de toucinho, profundidade do lombo e carne magra na carcaça) foram submetidos à ANOVA seguido por teste de Tukey, e os dados de condição de saúde (ocorrência de doenças, animais eutanasiados e mortos espontaneamente) foram analisados pelo teste de χ2. Os animais do grupo AD apresentaram maior ganho de peso diário (GPD) durante o período de avaliação e maior peso vivo aos 120, 140 e 164 dias de idade, além de maior peso de carcaça em comparação aos grupos CN e CP. O tratamento AX aumentou o GPD na fase crescimento II e o peso vivo aos 120 e 140 dias de idade em relação ao CN. O grupo CP+AX apresentou maior peso final em relação aos grupos CN e CP e maior peso de carcaça em relação ao CN. Não houve diferença entre os tratamentos para espessura de toucinho, porcentagem de carne magra na carcaça e ocorrência de doenças e óbitos. A inclusão de butirato de sódio encapsulado (tratamento AD) foi efetiva no aumento de GPD, peso final e peso de carcaça em comparação à suplementação com tilosina (tratamento CP), assim como a inclusão fitogênico (tratamento AX) melhorou a conversão alimentar em comparação ao grupo CP.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the optimal dosage of phytase fed to growing-finishing pigs. One hundred and twenty barrows, 71 d old and initial body weight 25.16 ± 2.80kg, were distributed in 40 pens according to a randomized complete block design and assigned to 5 treatments: 1. Positive control: diet formulated to meet or exceed the nutrient requirement of pigs (PC); 2. Negative control: PC diets formulated with 0,11% lower Ca and 0,13% lower available P (NC); 3. NC + 1,500 FYT of phytase; 4. NC + 3,000 FYT of phytase; 5. NC +4,500 FYT of phytase. The corn-soybean meal-based diets were formulated to be iso-nutrient and isoenergetic, except for Ca and av. P. The 4 diets were formulated according to a growing I (71-94 days of age), growing II (95-115d), finishing I (116-143 d) and finishing II (144-156 d) phases. Carcass traits were measured and submitted to the European Carcass Classification (SEUROP). Performance and carcass data were submitted to ANOVA, and regression analysis. There was a quadratic effect on FCR (P< 0.05) in growing I phase,; better FCR (quadratic, P< 0.05) on finishing II to 1,500 and 3,000 FYT (5.56 and 0.35%, respectively); an increase of 5.43 and 1.52% DWG in finishing II (quadratic, P< 0.05) and a reduced 6.60% to 4,500FYT; an improvement the total DWG and final weight (quadratic, P< 0.05) in 6.19 and 4.52%, and 5.27 and 3.57%, for 1,500 and 3,000 FYT, respectively. Phytase supplementation did not improve Carcass weight (P >0.05). The animals fed with 4,500 FYT diet had more carcasses classified as E (between 55–60% lean meat-SEUROP) compared other groups. Doses between 1,500 and 3,000 FYT improve FCR, DWG and final LW of growing and finishing pigs.

Non-productive days (NPD) and farrowing rate (FR) are indicators related to the number of piglets weaned per sow per year. Identifying the factors that affect these two indicators can improve the productivity and profitability of pig production. The objective of this study was to identify and quantify the associations of some factors related to the performance, management, facilities, feeding, health, and biosafety on NPD and FR over two consecutive years, using an inquiry applied to commercial pig farms in Brazil. Data from 150 farms were collected for a total study population of 135 168 sows, including gilt replacement, breeding (mating), gestation and farrowing/lactation phases. A questionnaire focusing on reproductive performance (for the years 2014 and 2015), management, facilities, feeding, health, and biosafety was administered. Multiple regression models were used to assess associations (α = 0.05) between factors and NPD and FR. An increased abortion index was associated with higher NPD (2014) and reduced FR (2014 and 2015); an increase in stillbirths was associated with higher NPD (2014 and 2015), and increased sow mortality was associated with a reduction in FR (2014 and 2015). In addition, farms had lower NPD in 2014, as the sows were younger at first farrowing, and when they had no lined ceiling in the gestation barns. Farms had lower NPD in 2015 when gilts were mated with an average weight of ≤139 kg compared to farms that mated gilts with an average weight >139 kg. Farrowing rate in 2014 was better in farms that fed pregnant sows with liquid/soup diets rather than mash or pelleted diets. Farms with higher FR in 2015 had wet-dry feeders in the farrowing barns rather than separate feeders and drinkers; they also practiced all-in/all-out management in farrowing rooms rather than continuous management. Several factors affect NPD and FR, but in general these factors do not remain the same over the years. Particular attention should be given to reducing abortions, stillborn piglets and the mortality of sows.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar e quantificar os fatores de produção presentes em granjas de crescimento e terminação (CT) de suínos, em um sistema cooperativo do estado do Paraná, Brasil, e determinar a influência desses fatores no consumo diário de ração (CDR) e na conversão alimentar (CA). Foram avaliados, entre os anos de 2010 e 2013, os históricos produtivos de 538 lotes de engorda, alojados em 175 granjas comerciais, totalizando aproximadamente 404.000 animais. The objective of this study was to describe the housing system in the hospital pens on growing and finishing (GF) pig farms. This work was developed by using a questionnaire and was conducted between January and April, 2016. Forty-four GF commercial farms (a total of 41,111 animals) were involved, seeking to raise issues concerning the facilities of the hospital pens, environment, management, feeding and the reasons for transferring the animals to these accommodations. About 98% of the evaluated farms had, at least, one hospital pen. Most of these farms presented a percentage of animals evaluated (PAE) in the infirmary, of less than 1.5% of the total capacity of the animal housing on the farm. In 93.48% of the farms, the criterion used to transfer the animals to the infirmaries was when they were identified as “impaired, hurt, suffering”. In 47.83% of the cases, there were no differences between the hospital and common pens regarding the general management of the animals. The facilities and environment characteristics were similar in almost all hospital pens. Respiratory problems were the main reason for transferring pigs from the common to hospital pens. Under the conditions of this study, sufficient hospital pens exist on farms and overcrowding or competition for resources among pigs are avoided. However, there is no established standard among respondents about where to place the recovered animals.

Animal welfare is an issue of growing concern worldwide. Since the 1960s, Europe has led the discussions on this subject, developing the supporting science and the necessary standards. Currently, European welfare standards on pig farms set the global standards and may represent a potential marketing barrier for commercial pork production. Brazil is one of the largest producers and exporters of pork and has intensified efforts to adapt to the new standards. The objective of this paper is to assess the feasibility of applying European welfare standards to Brazilian industrial pig farming. The complexity of the required changes and the potential advantages to Brazil are discussed, and it is concluded that Brazil has the resources to meet the majority of the requirements O bem-estar animal é um tema de crescente preocupação mundial. A partir da década de 1960, a Europa centralizou as discussões sobre a questão, provocou o nascimento desta ciência e promoveu o desenvolvimento de normas relacionadas. Atualmente, os padrões europeus de bem-estar na criação de suínos constituem-se referências mundiais, podendo representar futuramente potenciais barreiras mercadológicas para a comercialização da carne suína. O Brasil é um dos maiores produtores e exportadores desta proteína animal, e intensificou suas ações com objetivo de se adequar a este novo cenário. O objetivo deste documento é avaliar a viabilidade da suinocultura industrial brasileira em aplicar os padrões europeus de bem-estar em seu atual sistema produtivo. Os níveis de complexidade estruturais e de manejo e as vantagens potenciais do Brasil neste contexto são discutidas, e um cenário a priori positivo mostra que o país tem várias facilidades para a adequação da maioria das exigências praticadas

The objective of this study was to identify and quantify, through mathematical models, the main factors of production in growing and finishing pig units linked to three Brazilian cooperatives located in Western Region of Paraná State that influence the parameters of daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio. The records of 216 growing and finishing farms from 2010 to 2013, representing 1,533 batches, and totaling approximately 1,025,000 pigs, were evaluated. Thirty production factors related to the management, health, installations and equipment, nutrition, genetics, and environment were considered. The number of pigs per pen, the feeder model, the origin and sex of the animals, and the initial and final body weights were the factors included in the final models for both dependent variables (daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio) and had a significant impact on these ratios. Approximately, 41 and 55% of the total variance found for daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio, respectively, were explained by the variables included in the final models. Mathematical models could serve as important tools to aid the decision-making in pig production systems.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of chelated iron supplementation on gestating and lactating sows and on their suckling and weaned piglets. Reproductive traits, piglet performance, hematological parameters, and the iron concentrations in colostrum, milk, and stillborn livers were measured. Ninety-six sows were subjected to one of three treatment groups. Group T1 comprised pregnant and lactating sows treated with diets supplemented with inorganic iron (551 mg Fe/kg) and suckling piglets administered 200 mg of injectable iron dextran. Group T2 was the same as T1, except that sows after 84 days of gestation, lactating sows, and suckling piglets were fed a diet supplemented with 150 mg Fe/kg of chelated iron, and suckling piglets were administered injectable iron dextran. Group T3 was the same as T2 but without injectable iron dextran for suckling piglets. During the nursery phase, all of the weaned piglets were penned with their original groups or treatments and received isonutritive and isocaloric feeds. Piglets from the T2 and T3 groups also received an additional 150 mg Fe/kg of chelated iron via their feed. There were no differences among the treatments for reproductive traits or the iron concentrations in the colostrum, milk, or liver. The piglets that did not receive the injectable iron dextran showed the poorest performance during the pre-and post-weaning phases and showed the poorest hematological parameters of the suckling piglets. The chelated iron supplementation is insufficient to meet piglet demand. The iron dextran supply is necessary for suckling and weaned piglets.

This study aimed to assess the combined effect of L-carnitine, chromium propionate, and organic selenium in the diet of pigs at the finishing stage in commercial farms on performance parameters. The sample included 5,456 female and castrated male DB pigs with mean age of 159 days and mean initial weight of 103.33 ± 4.11 kg. The pigs were split into two treatments in a completely randomized design: the control group, free of growth-promoting dietary additives, and the test group, supplemented with Profitilina® (50 mg L-carnitine, 0.2 mg chromium propionate, and 0.3 mg organic selenium kg-1 of feed) for 30 days prior to slaughter. The outcomes assessed were daily weight gain (DWG), daily feed intake (DFI), feed conversion (FC), and final body weight (FBW). An improved performance according to all parameters (P < 0.001) was seen for the test group (2.58 versus 2.64 g day-1 for DFI; 0.76 versus 0.87g day-1 for DWG; 3.42 versus 3.06 for FC; and 125.7 versus 127.7 kg for FBW). Providing a combined dietary supplementation with L-carnitine, chromium propionate, and organic selenium to finishing pigs was effective at improving weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, and final weight.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing doses of bacterial phytase (RONOZYME HiPhos) on performance and carcass characteristics of growing and finishing pigs. The study included 120 castrated males with initial weight of 23.21 ± 1.91 kg and 68 days of age, distributed in a randomized block design with five treatments and eight replicates with three animals each. The pigs were fed five corn-soybean meal-based diets: positive control (PC), supplemented with inorganic phosphorus and calcium; negative control (NC), with 0.13% reduction in available phosphorus and 0.11% in calcium; and three NC diets supplemented with 1,000, 2,000, and 3,000 phytase units (FYT)/kg in the feed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of commercial blends of organic and inorganic acids combined with essential oils for piglets in the nursery phase. The formulations were administered as microcapsules or as acid salts. Ninety-six, Pen Ar Lan, barrow and female piglets, weaned at a body weight of 600 kg ± 12 kg and age of 23 days were subjected to four treatments. The treatments consisted of four different diets: control (free of organic acids); acid and essential oil blends (fumaric acid 10,5%, malic acid 8.0%, essential oils; in microencapsulated form); microencapsulated acid blend (phosphoric acid 10%, citric acid 10%, malic acid 10%, fumaric acid 20%; in microencapsulated form); and acid salt blend (formic acid 40.5%, phosphoric acid 13.6%, propionic acid 4.9% and salts (23.2% calcium and 4.4% phosphorus available). The performance parameters, digestive transit time, weights of organs of the digestive tract, bacterial count of feces (Lactobacillus, E coli and Salmonella ssp and Clostridium), pH of the stomach and duodenal content did not differ between treatment groups (P > 005). All treatments containing organic acids exhibited positive effects on diarrhea control (P < 005). The cecal contents of volatile fatty acids (VFA) were higher in piglets fed diets containing acids than in animals that received the control diet (P < 005), and blends containing essential oils improved the jejunum villus height compared with the control group. The use of diets containing acids improved diarrhea control and VFA production in the cecum, and specifically the diets containing microencapsulated acid blends required the lowest doses to be effective. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o uso de misturas comerciais de ácidos orgânicos e inorgânicos, associados a óleos essenciais, para leitões em fase de creche. Os produtos testados foram administrados na forma microencapsulada ou como sais de ácidos. Foram utilizados 96 leitões da linhagem Pen Ar Lan, machos castrados e fêmeas, desmamados com 6,00 kg ± 1,2 kg de peso vivo e 23 dias de idade, submetidos a quatro tratamentos. Os animais foram distribuídos em blocos ao acaso, em baias com três animais, contemplando oito repetições por tratamento. Os tratamentos corresponderam às seguintes dietas: controle (livre de ácidos orgânicos); mistura de ácidos e óleos essenciais: (ácido fumárico: 10,5%, ácido málico: 8,0%, óleos essenciais; na forma microencapsulada); mistura de ácidos microencapsulados (ácido fosfórico: 10%, ácido cítrico: 10%, ácido málico: 10%, ácido fumárico: 20%; na forma microencapsulada); mistura de sais de ácidos (ácido fórmico: 40,5%, ácido fosfórico: 13,6%, ácido propiônico: 4,9% e seus sais: 23,2% de cálcio e 4,4% fósforo disponível). Não houve diferença entre os tratamentos para os parâmetros de desempenho, tempo de trânsito da dieta, peso dos órgãos do trato digestório, contagem bacteriana nas fezes (Lactobacillus, E. coli, Salmonella ssp e Clostridiun) e pH do conteúdo estomacal e duodenal. Todos os tratamentos com ácidos orgânicos determinaram efeito positivo (P < 0,05) no controle da diarreia. Os níveis de ácidos graxos voláteis (AGV) no conteúdo cecal foram mais elevados nos leitões alimentados com dietas contendo ácidos em relação à dieta controle (P < 0,05) e as mistura de ácidos associados com óleos essenciais resultou em maior altura de vilosidades do jejuno em relação ao grupo controle. O uso de dietas contendo ácidos melhorou o controle da diarreia e a produção de AGV no ceco, sendo observado que a mistura de ácidos orgânicos microencapsulado tem estas ações sob doses mais baixas.

Pigs have certain needs that, when unfulfilled, can affect their behavior and their productive efficiency thus promoting welfare problems. Exploration and the search for food are inherent behaviors in pigs at all stages of production, and nest preparation is an exclusive antepartum need for females. In intensive rearing units, providing environmental enrichment materials is a way to meet these needs that allows the animals to fully express their behavior and avoid problems such as tail biting, stereotypes and, specifically in the case of breeding arrays, the onset of labor due to stress, which can result in impaired births and piglets. Straw is known as an enrichment material that best meets these demands, and it is an important requirement of animal welfare legislation in several countries. This study was developed to highlight the importance of meeting the biological needs of pigs through the provision of environmental enrichment materials and to demonstrate the positive results that these materials have on pig welfare. The challenges to the viability of the regular use of these resources in industrial pig farming are also addressed. Os suínos possuem necessidades natas que quando não atendidas afetam seu comportamento e sua eficiência produtiva, promovendo o surgimento de problemas de bem-estar. A exploração e a busca por alimento é um comportamento inerente dos suínos em todas as fases de produção, e a preparação do ninho é uma necessidade exclusiva da fêmea durante o pré-parto. Nas unidades de criação intensiva o fornecimento de materiais de enriquecimento ambiental é uma forma de atender estas necessidades, permitindo que os animais expressem plenamente seu comportamento, evitando problemas como caudofagia, estereotipias e, especificamente no caso das matrizes, o início do parto sob estresse, resultando no comprometimento do parto e dos leitões. A palha é reconhecidamente o material de enriquecimento com as características que melhor atende estas demandas, constituindo um item primordial descrito nas legislações de bem-estar animal de vários países. Assim, este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de destacar a importância em atender as demandas biológicas dos suínos por materiais de enriquecimento ambiental; demonstrar os resultados positivos que estes materiais exercem no bem-estar dos suínos, ao mesmo tempo em que são abordados os desafios para a viabilização do uso regular destes recursos na suinocultura industrial.

A suinocultura industrial brasileira é representativa em nível mundial, detendo uma produção de qualidade reconhecida e competitiva, na qual a classifica como quarta maior exportadora, contribuindo expressivamente com o PIB do país. Por sua vez, o tema bem-estar animal (BEA), que já se encontra bem estabelecido em importantes países produtores de suínos, vem ganhando notoriedade nesta cadeia, com consumidores, investidores e empresas alimentícias pressionando a indústria brasileira para incrementar estas práticas. Baseado em informações da literatura científica, atos administrativos, materiais técnicos e comunicados produzidos pelo setor privado, esta revisão apresenta o cenário brasileiro do bem-estar dos suínos, incluindo informações sobre a avaliação científica do BEA, como empresas e consumidores percebem o tema, os atos administrativos e demais iniciativas oficiais, a situação da transição do sistema de gestação em celas para o modelo coletivo e algumas das contribuições da pesquisa nacional. O cenário do bem-estar dos suínos no país é desafiador, mas há uma mobilização e esforços significativos de toda a cadeia, envolvendo a iniciativa pública e privada, já com resultados efetivos e práticos, sinalizando que embora o caminho seja laborioso o país avança verticalmente nesta questão.

A qualidade de vida dos animais é um tema pelo qual a sociedade tem apresentado crescente interesse. O mesmo pode ser interpretado considerando a sua inter-relação com a ciência do bem-estar animal, ética e legislação. A ciência do bem-estar animal nasceu na Inglaterra na década de 60 como consequência do mandato social em defesa dos animais criados intensivamente, e evoluiu com as ações do Farm Animal Welfare Council, ganhando força junto à sociedade, o que motivou a elaboração de legislações de proteção e bem-estar. O projeto Welfare Quality® é um exemplo de como os conhecimentos científicos podem apoiar a avaliação do bem-estar na granja e no abatedouro. As três linhas de pensamento mais difundidas que conceituam o tema definem bem-estar com base nas emoções, no funcionamento biológico e no comportamento natural dos animais, no entanto, há um consenso crescente de que o bem-estar é um conceito multidimensional que engloba estas três escolas de pensamento. A legislação europeia de proteção e bem-estar animal corresponde às normas mais abrangentes, sendo aplicadas nos âmbitos da produção, do transporte e do abate de animais, servindo como modelo para muitos outros países. O Brasil ainda não tem uma legislação de bem-estar animal bem completa e estruturada, deixando vários segmentos da cadeia produtiva de suínos descobertos. O estudo e a compreensão dos principais problemas de bem-estar que acometem os suínos do nascimento ao abate são o ponto de partida para a solução dos mesmos e a garantia de uma melhor qualidade de vida e produção de uma carne com qualidade ética. Entre os problemas de bem-estar dos suínos mais debatidos na atualidade se encontram o sistema de alojamento das fêmeas gestantes e a insensibilização com o uso de CO2. O entendimento científico dos sistemas de produção alternativos, caracterizados como “amigos do bem-estar”, pode fornecer subsídios para interações mais conscientes do tema. Neste sentido, a criação de suínos ibéricos no sistema extensivo representa um modelo importante de estudo. A relação entre o bem-estar animal e a produtividade é um ponto-chave de uma equação que auxilia a compreensão da gestão junto à cadeia produtiva dos avanços sustentáveis em prol do bem-estar animal. The animal welfare has been a subject of a great interest in our society. It basis is supported by relationship with science, ethics and legislation. The science of animal welfare was born in England in the 60s as a result of the social mandate in defense of farm animals reared intensively, and with the evolution of the actions of the Farm Animal Welfare Council, where gained by the society, especially considering the ethical, the support to elaborate the legislation for the protection and animal welfare. The Welfare Quality® project is an example like the scientific knowledge can contribute with the evaluation of welfare on the farm and slaughterhouse. Three lines of thought that are very widespread conceptualize the welfare, being the emotions, the biological function and the natural behavior of the animals, however, there is a growing consensus that welfare is a multidimensional concept that include these three lines of thought. European legislation for the protection and welfare corresponds the wider norms that are applied in production, transport and animal sacrifice, where can be used as a model for many other countries. Brazil still has no comprehensive legislation for animal welfare, leaving uncovered various segments of the pig production chain. The study and understanding of major issues affecting the welfare pigs from birth to slaughter are the starting point for their solution, where it can provide a better quality of life and produce a meat with ethical quality. Among the problems of the welfare of pigs the most polemic today, are the housing system of pregnant and stunning with the use of CO2. The scientific understanding of alternative production systems, characterized as "welfare friendly" can supply with consistence this question. In this sense the creation of Iberian pigs in extensive system represents an important model study. The relationship between animal welfare and productivity is a key point of an equation that helps to understand how the pig chain can prevent the sustainable advances in favor of animal welfare.

Os procedimentos de castração de machos, secção da cauda, corte ou desgaste dos dentes e identificação dos leitões são práticas de manejo realizadas largamente logo após o nascimento em granjas comerciais. Apesar das ações terem propósitos bem definidos, resultam em dor aguda e crônica nos leitões, representando um importante problema de bem-estar. A pressão social para o banimento destes procedimentos tem-se intensificado, sendo que vários países vêm restringindo o uso rotineiro destas práticas através de normativas. Atualmente questiona-se muito a forma e a necessidade da manutenção destas práticas, em especial no Brasil, que ainda demanda legislação sobre o tema. Nesta revisão são abordados os impactos destes procedimentos no bem-estar dos suínos e as perspectivas para o setor produtivo brasileiro quanto à adaptação a estas novas tendências. Em síntese, pode-se atribuir que tecnicamente os manejos de corte da cauda e dos dentes mostram-se desnecessários quando os suínos têm suas necessidades básicas atendidas. A castração cirúrgica quando mantida deverá ser efetuada mediante o uso da anestesia e analgesia prolongada, ou então optar-se pela imunocastração. Para todos os manejos visualiza-se a possibilidade de minimização dos impactos negativos inerentes por meio da capacitação constante da mão de obra, uso correto de equipamentos e a manutenção da higiene nestas práticas.

A tuberculose continua sendo um importante problema de saúde pública, por ser uma zoonose que tornou-se reemergente devido, principalmente, a grande incidência entre portadores de imunodeficiências. A tuberculose, causada por micobactérias do grupo mamífero, em suínos criados em sistemas comerciais, é uma doença raramente encontrada. Neste trabalho, foram necropsiados três animais, provenientes de uma granja de suínos com aproximadamente 90 animais alimentados com resíduos alimentares. Alguns animais apresentavam tosse, anorexia e dor a palpação torácica. Linfonodos e fragmentos de vísceras com lesões macroscópicas foram submetidos a exames histopatológicos e microbiológico, além da tuberculinização em 62 animais adultos da propriedade. A prova dupla comparativa com tuberculinas mamífera e aviária foi realizada em 14 fêmeas da maternidade. Foram observadas lesões características de tuberculose (forma miliar e perolada) nos animais necropsiados no período de janeiro a março de 2000. O isolamento e cultivo foram compatíveis com Mycobacterium bovis Na leitura das tuberculinizações foram observadas 49 reações positivas, sendo que nas duplas comparativas, 14 fêmeas foram reagentess apenas para tuberculina mamífera. Todos animais da propriedade foram encaminhados para o abate e coletados materiais para exame histopatológico e microbiológico e diagnóstico pela técnica de reação em cadeia pela polimerase (PCR). Após confirmação do diagnóstico de tuberculose foi elaborado um programa de eliminação do plantel, desinfecção e vazio sanitário. Este comunicado alerta para os riscos de tuberculose em suínos criados sem cuidados de biosseguridade, sobretudo aqueles alimentados com resíduos alimentares, e suas implicações na saúde pública. Tuberculosis continues being an important disease which demands attention from public health as it has emerged again with many occurrences between imunodeficients peoples. In this study, one female from a small farm with around 90 animals fed with food residues, were necropsied. The symptoms before death were cough, anorexia and thoracic touching. At the necropsy was collected lymph nodes and fragments from bowels with macroscopic lesions used for the diagnosis, which should be based on microscopic examination, isolation, and identification of Mycobacterium from these sites. Beside this exams, tuberculin testing was realized in sixty-two adults animals were. Tuberculin comparative testing with Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium was realized in fourteen sows. It has been observed lesions of tuberculosis (miliary and pearllike) in the dead female and in all animals necropsied in this period. Forty-nine positives reactions were observed in the tuberculin testing readins and in the tuberculin comparative testing the fourteen sows got positive only for mammals tuberculin. Tuberculin testing of swine with subsequent slaughter of reactors, and depopulation of entire herds. Newly materials were collected for microbiological, microscopic examination and diagnosis using polimerase chain reaction technic. After diagnosis confirmation of tuberculosis, a program to depopulation of entire herds, disinfect and all-in, all-out technology. This communication makes aware of tuberculosis risks in swine farm out biossecurity and theirs problems from public health, mainly animals fed with food residues.

As definicoes de bem-estar animal tem sido amplamente debatidas junto a comunidade cientifica internacional durante as ultimas decadas. A linha conceitual mais aceita trata do bem-estar animal dentro de um enfoque multidimensional, abrangendo emocoes, funcionamento biologico e comportamento natural. No entanto, compreendido os conceitos, outro desafio que se apresenta e como mensurar adequadamente o bem-estar animal nas condicoes de campo. Neste sentido, o projeto Welfare Quality ® fornece uma compreensao muito util dos componentes de bem-estar e de como podemos avalia-lo em granjas comerciais e abatedouros de suinos. O objetivo deste artigo e discorrer sobre os principais conceitos cientificos de bem-estar animal e sobre as formas praticas de avaliacao segundo os protocolos do projeto Welfare Quality ® em suinos, identificando seus aspectos positivos e criticos.

A capsaicina é um alcalóide reconhecidamente utilizado como aromatizante e palatabilizante, efeitos que podem incrementar o consumo de ração em matrizes suínas em fase de lactação, sobretudo em condições de estresse térmico, exercendo adicionalmente atividades antioxidantes e imunoestimulantes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de um produto a base de capsaicina sobre o consumo de ração de matrizes suínas, a imunomodulação e as repercussões sobre a performance da leitegada e o controle dos quadros diarreicos dos leitões. Foram utilizadas 132 fêmeas gestantes e lactantes e suas respectivas leitegadas, 66 de cada grupo, submetidas a dois tratamentos: controle (dieta isenta de capsaicina) e teste (4g de capsaicina por matriz/dia). As matrizes foram tratadas entre os 95 dias de gestação e os 21 dias de lactação. Foram avaliadas a espessura de toucinho, consumo de ração na fase de lactação, produção de colostro, concentração de IgG no colostro, performance reprodutiva da matriz, desempenho dos leitões e ocorrência de diarreia. Matrizes que receberam capsaicina apresentaram maior consumo de ração (+0.69kg/dia durante a lactação), níveis mais elevados de IgG no colostro (153,80 versus 185,75mg/mL), proporcionaram ganhos de peso da leitegada 11.22% superiores em relação ao controle, com ganhos de peso individuais dos leitões superiores a 5.24% (P

O objetivo com a condução desta pesquisa foi avaliar o bem-estar de suínos em fase de crescimento e terminação e estimar a emissão de gases de efeito estufa e amônia em sistema de cama sobreposta. Para tanto, foram conduzidos dois experimentos. O primeiro teve como objetivo avaliar o bem-estar de suínos em fase de crescimento e terminação mantidos em sistema de cama sobreposta sob a ótica dos princípios do protocolo Welfare Quality® . Ao todo, 16500 animais, distribuídos em 15 instalações, foram avaliados durante um período de quatro meses. Foram realizadas três avaliações em cada instalação, respeitando a seguinte distribuição de tempo: fase inicial (75 a 85 dias de vida); intermediária (86 a 161 dias de vida) e final (de 162 a 180 dias de vida). Os dados de comportamento, bursite, hérnia, feridas e fezes no corpo foram analisados por regressão logística para dados longitudinais. Para os dados de contagem, tosse e espirro, foi empregada a distribuição de Poisson, com posterior análise de qui-quadrado e os dados do QBA por meio de análise de componentes principais. Não houve a ocorrência de casos interação humano-animal negativa, de condição corporal ruim, tremores, ofegação, amontoamentos, caudofagia, tremores, focinho torcido e prolapso retal, claudicação, condição da pele. Houve efeito da avaliação e da categoria animal na incidência de bursite, hérnia e repertório comportamental. Foram observadas mais chances da ocorrência de hérnias e bursites nas avaliações finais, com mais prevalência nos machos em relação às fêmeas. As prevalências dos parâmetros feridas e dejetos no corpo foram influenciadas pela interação da avaliação e categoria animal. A incidência de tosse e do número de animais que apresentaram esse sintoma aumentou gradualmente, sendo consideravelmente maiores na fase final de avaliação. Houve influência da avaliação e da categoria animal na incidência dos comportamentos elencados no etograma. Na avaliação 1, machos apresentaram mais chances de apresentar todos comportamentos avaliados no etograma, pertinente aos comportamentos negativos, em relação às fêmeas e aos lotes mistos. Nas demais avaliações as fêmeas apresentaram mais chances de exibir os comportamentos de caráter negativos. Os lotes mistos permaneceram intermediários em todas as avaliações. A porcentagem de interação com a cama variou entre 19.62% e 25.80% durante todo o período experimental. A aplicação do protocolo Welfare Quality® proporcionou uma visão ampla e confiável sobre o bem-estar dos animais, permitindo o gerenciamento mais adequado de sistemas de produção em cama sobreposta. O segundo experimento teve como objetivo avaliar a concentração e emissão de gases de efeito estufa (GEE) e amônia em instalações de suínos mantidos em sistema de cama sobreposta com diferentes níveis de utilização. Ao todo, foram coletadas amostras gasosas de oito instalações de suínos com diferentes níveis de utilização da cama. Foram considerados quatro edifícios com cama em terceiro nível de utilização, dois galpões com cama de segunda utilização e outros dois com cama de primeiro uso. As amostras de ar foram feitas através de duas coletas semanais, realizadas no período matutino e vespertino para cada edifício de alojamento avaliado. As emissões foram calculadas com base na metodologia simplificada do princípio de cálculo das emissões de gases por meio das relações de concentração. Os dados de emissão de GEEs e amônia foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias, de acordo com o diferente nível de utilização da cama, foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey pelo software estatística R. Maiores emissões de dióxido de carbono ( 8.78 vs 8.72 vs 8.63 g/suíno/dia) e metano (0.07 vs 0.03 vs 0.01 g/suíno/dia) foram observados em camas de primeira utilização e menores em terceira. Não houve diferença nas emissões de amônia (0.01 vs 0.06 vs 0.06 g/suíno/dia) e óxido nitroso (0.01 vs 0.02 vs 0.02 g/suíno/dia). Em condições de clima tropical, as emissões de gases de efeito estufa e amônia foram consideravelmente baixas. The aim of this research was to evaluate the welfare of growing and finishing pigs and to estimate greenhouse gases and ammonia emissions in deep bedding system. For this, two experiments were carried out. The first study aimed to evaluate the welfare of growing and finishing pigs kept in deep bedding system from the perspective of the Welfare Quality® protocol. In all, 16500 animals, distributed in 15 facilities, were evaluated over a four-month period. Three evaluations were performed in each facility, respecting the following time distribution: initial phase (75 to 85 days of life); intermediate (86 to 161 days old) and final (from 162 days old until slaughter). Behavior, bursitis, hernia, wounds and feces on the body data were analyzed by logistic regression for longitudinal data. For counting data, coughing and sneezing, the Poisson distribution was used, with subsequent chi-square analysis and QBA data were subjetect by principal component analysis. There was an effect of the evaluation and the animal category on the incidence of bursitis, hernia and behavioral repertoire. More chances of the occurrence of hernias and bursitis were observed in the final evaluations, with more prevalence in males compared to females. The prevalence of wound and body waste parameters was influenced by the interaction of the assessment and animal category. The incidence of cough and the number of animals that presented this symptom gradually increased, being considerably higher in the final evaluation phase. There was an influence of evaluation and animal category on the incidence of behaviors. In evaluation 1, males were more likely to present all behaviors evaluated in the ethogram, which is relevant to negative behaviors, in relation to females and mixed batches. In the other evaluations, females were more likely to exhibit negative behaviors. Mixed batches remained intermediate in all evaluations. The percentage of interaction with the bed varied between 19.62% and 25.80% throughout the experimental period. The application of the Welfare Quality® protocol provided a wide and reliable view on the welfare of animals, allowing the most appropriate management of production systems in deep bedding systems. The aim of the second experiment was to evaluate the concentration and emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and ammonia in swine facilities kept in deep bedding system with different utilization levels. Gaseous samples were collected from eight pig facilities with different levels of litter utilization; four buildings with third-level litter, two sheds with second level and two with first use. Air samples were taken through two weekly samplings, in the morning and afternoon for each housing building evaluated. Emissions were calculated based on the simplified methodology of the principle of calculation of gas emissions by concentration ratios. GHG and ammonia emissions data were subjected to analysis of variance and averages, according to the different level of utilization of the litter, were compared by Tukey test by the R statistical software. Highest carbon dioxide emissions (8.78 vs 8.72 vs 8.63 pig per day) and methane (0.07 vs 0.03 vs 0.01 pig per day) were observed in first use and smaller beds in third. There was no difference in ammonia emissions (0.01 vs 0.06 vs 0.06 pig per day) and nitrous oxide (0.01 vs 0.02 vs 0.02 g per pig per day). Under tropical climate conditions, greenhouse gas and ammonia emissions were considerably low.

O período pós-desmame é caracterizado por uma alta incidência de deficiência energética celular, distúrbios intestinais e infecções bacterianas que podem levar a doenças graves. Evidências indicam que a função mitocondrial e o estresse oxidativo estão intimamente relacionados no controle da eficiência energética celular, resposta imune e bactérias patogênicas. Portanto, estratégias eficazes que visam melhorar a saúde metabólica dos leitões e aumentar vigor durante o período pós-desmame precisam ser desenvolvidas. No entanto, mesmo que tal conceito seja altamente promissor, poucas informações estão disponíveis atualmente em relação à intensidade e duração desse estresse em leitões com normal e baixo peso ao nascimento. Portanto, objetivou-se caracterizar marcadores do metabolismo energético e estresse oxidativo ao longo do período peri-desmame. Um total de 30 (trinta) porcas multíparas foram inseminadas e as leitegadas foram padronizadas em 10 leitões. Os leitões foram distribuídos para um dos dois grupos experimentais: leitões de peso normal ao nascimento (NPN, 1,73 ± 0,01 kg, n = 60) e leitões de baixo peso ao nascimento (BPN, 1,01 ± 0,01 kg, n = 60). Em seguida, 10 leitões de cada grupo foram selecionados aos 14, 21, 23, 25, 29 e 35 dias de idade para a coleta de amostras de plasma e órgãos (fígado, jejuno e rins). Observou-se aumento significativo (P < 0,05) do dano oxidativo ao DNA (8-OHdG) e das proteínas plasmáticas (grupo carbonila). Uma diminuição (P < 0,05) no nível de energia celular na forma de adenosina trifosfato (ATP) foi observada no fígado após o desmame. Essa diminuição na produção de energia mitocondrial está relacionada à atividade mitocondrial maior (P< 0,05) nos leitões BPN. Na sequência foram analisados ensaio de RT2 Profiler™ PCR de genes relacionadas à função mitocondrial, estresse oxidativo, processos de inflamação e apoptose em leitões NPN (23d, 35d vs. 14d). A expressão dos genes selecionados foi avaliada por RT- PCR quantitativo. Essas análises revelaram que a expressão de RNAm das moléculas inflamatórias (IL-8 e CCL19) aumentou após o desmame na mucosa intestinal, enquanto a expressão de genes que codificam subunidades da cadeia respiratória mitocondrial (NDUFA2 e NDUFA5) foi reduzida no fígado de ambos os grupos (P < 0,05). Os principais moduladores da apoptose mitocondrial (BCL2A1 e BNIP3) e do sistema de defesa antioxidante (TXNRD2, GPx3, HMOX1) foram altamente expressos em leitões BPN comparados a NPN (P < 0,05). Além disso, os níveis sistêmicos de moléculas inflamatórias (TNF-α e IL1-β) aumentaram logo após o desmame e foram maiores nos leitões NPN (P < 0,05). Esses resultados indicaram que o desmame causa diminuição da energia mitocondrial no fígado, intestino e rim, em associação com condições de estresse oxidativo. Além disso, esses resultados sugerem que defesas antioxidantes, resposta inflamatória e apoptose estão comprometidas em leitões BPN. The period following weaning is characterised by a high incidence of energetic deficiencies, intestinal disturbances and bacterial infections that led to serious diseases. Evidence indicates that mitochondrial function and oxidative stress are closely related to controlling cellular energetic efficiency, immune response and bacterial pathogenesis. Thus, effective strategies aiming to improve metabolic health of piglets and increased their robustness during the post-weaning period need to be developed. However,little information is currently available regarding the intensity and duration of this stress in both normal and low weight piglets. The objective was to characterize markers of energy metabolism and oxidative status throughout the periweaning period. Thirty (30) multiparous sows were inseminated, and litters were standardized to 10 piglets. Piglets were designed to one of two experimental groups: normal birth weight piglets (NBW, 1.73 ± 0.01 kg, n = 60) and low birth weight piglets (LBW, 1.01 ± 0. 01 kg, n = 60). Then, 10 piglets from each group were selected at 14, 21, 23, 25, 29 and 35 days of age to collect plasma and organ (liver, intestinal mucosa and kidney) samples. Analysis revealed a significant increase (P < 0.05) in plasma levels of both oxidative damage to DNA (8-OHdG) and proteins (protein carbonyls) measured in plasma increased after weaning. A decrease (P < 0.05) in cellular energy level in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content, known to be produced in mitochondria, was observed in the liver after weaning. This decrease in mitochondrial energy production was found to be linked to significantly higher (P < 0.05) mitochondrial activity major antioxidant glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in liver, intestinal mucosa and kidney of piglets after weaning. Additionally, the levels of oxidative damage to DNA (8-OHdG) measured in plasma and of liver protein carbonyls were found to be higher (P < 0.05) in LBW piglets. RT2 Profiler ™ PCR arrays were assessed for genes related to mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis in NBW piglets (d 23 and 35 vs. d 14). Objetivou-se com este trabalho conhecer, classificar e quantificar a importância relativa de diferentes fatores de produção sobre os índices produtivos durante as fases de pré-gestação, gestação e maternidade. Para alcançar estes objetivos dois estudos foram propostos (artigo A e B) que são detalhados a seguir. No primeiro artigo foi construído um banco de dados referente às condições de produção e desempenho reprodutivo, com objetivo de obter informações representativas e confiáveis sobre a situação no setor. As informações foram coletadas de 150 granjas totalizando 135.168 matrizes. As informações coletados na pesquisa, foram referentes ao ano de 2015, sendo divididas em quatro partes: identificação, informações gerais, variáveis independentes (instalações, sanidade e biosegurança, alimentação e manejo) e variáveis dependentes (rendimentos produtivos). As granjas em sua maioria apresentavam idade superiores a 15 anos, apontando necessidade de adequação as normas de bem-estar. A mão de obra era predominantemente contratada, a genética linha fêmea era dividida por três empresas e a linhagem macho dominada por uma. O plantel médio era de 901 matrizes. Na questão de biosseguridade, não era adotada a dupla cerca, o manejo all-in-all-out foi predominante (maternidade), houve expressiva presença de granjas de ciclo completo próximas às divisas destas granjas, a compostagem de cadáveres foi localizada fora do perímetro da granja, o controle de praga foi comumente feito. No tratamento de dejetos predominou o uso de lagoas, a maior porcentagem não tinha biodigestor; a reposição do plantel foi na maioria por compra direta; a água foi oriunda de poços artesianos, mas metade das granjas não realizava tratamento. Os desinfetantes mais usados eram compostos principalmente por glurataldeido, amônia e fenóis; nas instalações, pré-gestação, utiliza-se celas, gestação baias ou associação de baias e celas; na pré-gestação o piso compacto de cimento foi predominante, na gestação o ripado/compacto de cimento, na maternidade o misto. O telhado de fibro cimento predomina e a ambiência principalmente feita pela ventilação natural. O sistema de isolamento dos barracões é feito pelo uso de cortinas, o aquecimento dos leitões por lâmpadas; os bebedouros nipple predominam. Os sistemas de alimentação na gestação são semiautomáticos e automáticos. A pneumonia por micoplasma foi a enfermiade mais crítica; a vacina tríplice foi a mais utilizada e a amoxicilina foi o princípio mais empregado nos leitões. Faz-se o manejo adaptação das fêmeas na maioria das granjas, sendo a 1º cobertura aos 7,5 meses, com 139 kg. A inseminação artificial intrauterina prevalece e o acompanhamento do parto foi rotina; o desmame foi fixo, nas quartas e quintas feiras; 100% dos leitões recebem a suplementação de ferro e coccidiostático. O colostro foi prioritariamente dirigido para animais fracos, a uniformização das leitegadas foi rotina, assim como a oferta de creep-feeding, a aparagem dos dentes pelo desgaste, a caudectomia e a castração cirúrgica. Adota-se a produção própria de rações específicas e normalmente fareladas; dois a três arraçoamentos/dia são feitos na reposição e pré-cobertura, um na gestação, e quatro a cinco na lactação. A quarentena foi praticada em um pequeno número de granjas. A entrada no setor de reposição foi aos 133 dias de idade, sendo adotados 21 dias de adaptação, 23,8 dias de lactação. A relação matrizes/funcionário foi de 88,03. A idade média no primeiro parto foi de 325,8 dias, 48,8% de taxa de reposição anual, a idade média de descarte foi de 6,3 partos, mortalidade total de matriz foi de 6,9%, cada matriz teve em média 2,4 partos/ano, 15,6 dias não produtivos, intervalo desmame cio de 6,1 dias, intervalo desmame cobertura fértil de 7,4 dias, 1,9% de taxa de aborto, 89,2% de parição, com 13,8 nascidos totais, 12,7 leitões vivos, 0,7% de natimortos, 0,4% de mumificados e 11,6 desmamados. O consumo de ração foi de 1113,32 kg por matriz/ano, o peso médio da desmama foi de 6,34 kg, totalizando 175,18 kg desmamados/matriz/ano, e a conversão alimenar da matriz por kg de leitão desmamado foi de 6,46. O levantamento contribuiu para melhor compreensão da idade média de nossas granjas, como estão compostas as instalações e o manejo alimentar das granjas avaliadas, verificando as alterações necessárias para obter melhores desempenhos nos índices reprodutivos e produtivos em granjas de suínos. No artigo B objetivou-se identificar e descrever associações entre uma ampla gama de fatores de produção em relação aos parâmetros reprodutivos em granjas comerciais de suínos. Um questionário foi aplicado entre junho de 2016 e julho de 2017 a 150 granjas, totalizando 135.168 matrizes, fornecendo informações gerais, aspectos de sanidade e biosseguridade, instalações, manejo, alimentação e desempenho reprodutivo. As variáveis de desempenho reprodutivo corresponderam aos valores médios dos rebanhos entre 01 de janeiro e 31 de dezembro de 2015. Os parâmetros de desempenho foram submetidos a correlações de Pearson. Leitões desmamados por fêmea por ano (DMA), peso médio do leitão ao desmame (PLD), quilogramas de leitões desmamados por matriz por ano (QLD) e conversão alimentar da matriz (CaM) foram selecionadas como variáveis dependentes e submetidas a regressões lineares univariadas contra os fatores de produção previamente selecionados para cada variável dependente (92 para DMA; 94 para PLD; 102 para QLD; 93 para CaM). Onze correlações fortes (≥ 0,70 r ≤ 1,00; P < 0,01) e 31 moderadas (≥ 0,4 r < 0,70; P < 0,01) foram identificadas entre os parâmetros de desempenho. Nas análises de regressão, quatro características gerais, cinco de biosseguridade, quatro sanitárias, sete das instalações, oito de manejo, três relacionadas à alimentação e 14 variáveis contínuas relacionadas ao desempenho dos animais, nutrição e características gerais das granjas foram associadas significativamente (P < 0,05) a pelo menos uma das quatro variáveis dependentes. O modelo de estudo contribui para uma melhor compreensão de como as características inerentes a cada campo estudado (i.e. biosseguridade, manejo, instalações, etc) podem afetar os parâmetros produtivos e reprodutivos em granjas de reprodução de suínos. The objective of this research was to know, classify and quantify the relative importance of different factors of production on the productive indexes during the pre gestation, gestation and maternity phases. To reach these objectives two studies were proposed (papers A and B) which was detailed below. In the first paper, a database was built regarding production conditions and reproductive performance, aiming to obtain representative and reliable information about the situation in the sector. Information was collected from 150 farms totaling 135,168 sows. The information collected in the research was related to the year 2015, divided into four parts: identification of farms, general information of herds, independent variables (facilities, sanity and biosecurity, feeding and management) and dependent variables (productive performance). The farms in most of them, age superiors to 15 years, pointing need of adequacy the norms of animal welfare. The predominantly hired workforce, the female genetics line is divided by three companies and the male lineage dominated by one, the squad is 901 sows. In the biosecurity question, the fence pair was not adopted, the predominant all-in-all-out management (maternity), there is an expressive presence of complete cycle farms close to the boundaries of these farms, corpse composting was located outside the perimeter of the farm, pest control was commonly done; in the treatment of waste the use of ponds predominates, the greater percentage doesn’t have biodigestor; the replenishment of the stock was mostly by direct purchase; the water came from artesian wells, but half of the farms do not carry out treatment; the most used disinfectants have the principles glurataldehyde, ammonia and phenols; pre-gestation, use of stalls, gestation stalls or association of stalls and cells; in the pre-gestation the compact cement floor was predominant, in the gestation/ slatted floor/ compact of cement, in the maternity the mixed one. The fibro-cement roof predominates and the ambience is mainly made by natural ventilation. The insulation system of the barracks is made by the use of curtains, the heating of the piglets by lamps; nipple drinkers predominate. The feeding systems in the gestation are semiautomatic and automatic. Mycoplasma pneumonia was the most critical illness; the triple vaccine was the most used and amoxicillin was the principle most used in piglets. Adaptation of females is carried out in most farms, with the first coverage at 7.5 months, with 139 kg. Intrauterine artificial insemination prevails and birth attendance was routine; weaning was fixed, on Wednesdays and Thursdays; 100% of piglets receive iron and coccidiostatic supplementation. Colostrum was primarily directed to the weaker animals, standardization of litters was routine, as were the supply of creep-feeding, tooth dressing by wearing, caudectomy and surgical castration. It adopts the own production of specific rations and usually branched; two to three food treatments / day are done at the replacement and pre-coverage, one at gestation tract, and four to five at lactation. Quarantine was practiced on a small number of farms. The entry in the replacement was at 133 days of age, being adopted 21 days of adaptation, 23.8 days of lactation. The sow/employee ratio was 88.03. The mean age at first parity was 325.8 days, 48.8% annual replacement, mean age of culling was 6.3 farrows, total sow mortality was 6.9%, each sow had on average 2, weaning interval of 7.4 days, 1.9% of abortion rate, 89.2% of parity rate, with 13.8 births, 12.7 live piglets, 0.7% stillborn, 0.4% mummified and 11.6 weaned. The feed intake was 1113.32 kg, per weaning/year, the weaning weight was 6.34 kg, totaling 175.18 kg weaned/sow/year, and the feed conversion per kg of weaned piglet was 6.46. In paper B, the objective was to identify and describe associations between a wide range of factors of production in relation to performance parameters in commercial breeding pig farms. A questionnaire was applied between June 2016 and July 2017 to 150 farms, totalizing 135,168 productive sows, comprising general information, aspects of sanity and biosecurity, facilities, management, feeding and reproductive performance. The variables of reproductive performance corresponded to the mean values of the herds between January 1 and December 31, 2015. The performance parameters were submitted to Pearson correlations. Weaned piglets per sow (WPS), mean piglet weight at weaning (PWW), kilograms of piglets weaned per year (kgPWY) and sow feed conversion (SFC) were selected as dependent variables and submitted to univariate linear regressions against the previously selected production factors for each dependent variable (92 for WPS, 94 for PWW, 102 for kgPWY, 93 for SFC). Uma queda na produção, como a diminuição do ganho de peso diário, indica comprometimento do bem-estar animal, no entanto, alto desempenho nem sempre implica em adequado bem-estar. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de fatores inerentes ao bem-estar sobre parâmetros de desempenho e mortalidade de suínos em granjas de crescimento e terminação. Paralelamente, as baias hospital dessas unidades foram caracterizadas com respeito ao manejo, estrutura e perfil dos animais nelas mantidos. O protocolo Welfare Quality®, para avaliação do bem-estar de suínos, foi aplicado entre os meses de janeiro e abril de 2016 em 46 granjas de crescimento e terminação (um lote por granja) vinculadas à quatro cooperativas localizadas no oeste do estado do Paraná, representando um rebanho de aproximadadmente 40.100 animais. A prevalência de 22 medidas do protocolo foi verificada e o efeito desses fatores sobre a conversão alimentar, consumo de ração, ganho de peso diário e mortalidade foi avaliado. Verificou-se que os principais fatores relacionados a um bem-estar inadequado nessas unidades foram a bursite sob grau moderado, fezes no corpo sob grau severo e frequência de tosses. A conversão alimentar sofreu influência do espaço total na baia por animal. O consumo de ração foi afetado pelos fatores comportamento social positivo e fezes no corpo sob grau moderado. A mortalidade foi influênciada pelos fatores comportamento social negativo e fezes no corpo de forma moderada. Devido à baixa prevalência e variabilidade dos fatores de bem-estar nas granjas analisadas, muitos deles não foram incluidos nas análises de regressão linear, no entanto, foi possível verificar que fatores inerentes ao bem-estar afetam o desempenho e mortalidade dos animais. A caracterização das baias hospital foi realizada por meio da aplicação de um questionário face-a-face em 46 granjas, sendo uma destas granjas distinta da avaliação anterior, totalizando cerca de 41.054 animais. Foram identificadas 150 baias hospital sendo que em 97 delas havia ao menos um animal alojado, totalizando 299 animais mantidos nestas instalações. Menos de 1,5% da capacidade total de animais nestas granjas estavam alojados nas baias hospital. Em 47,83% das granjas o manejo geral nas baias hospital era o mesmo realizado nas baias comuns. As características das instalações e do ambiente foram similares na maioria das baias hospital. Problemas respiratórios foram os mais relatados como razões de transferência dos animais para as baias hospital. As granjas avaliadas possuem baias hospital em quantidade suficiente, no entanto não houve um padrão entre os respondentes sobre onde alojar os animais recuperados. A decrease in production, such as a decrease in daily weight gain, indicates impairment of animal welfare, however, high performance does not always imply adequate welfare. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of inherent factors of welfare on parameters of performance and mortality of pigs on growing and finishing farms. In parallel, the hospital pens of these units were characterized regarding to the management, structure and profile of the animals kept in them. The Welfare Quality® - welfare assessment protocol - was applied between January and April 2016 in 46 growing and finishing farms (one batch per farm) linked to four cooperatives located in the Western Region of the Paraná State, representing a herd of approximately 40,100 animals. The prevalence of 22 measures of the protocol was verified and the effect of these factors on feed conversion ratio, feed intake, daily weight gain and mortality was assessed. The main factors related to poor welfare in these units were moderate bursitis, manure on the body under severe degree and frequency of coughs. The feed conversion ratio was influenced by the total space in the pen per animal. The feed intake was affected by positive social behavior and manure on the body under moderate degree. Mortality was influenced by negative social behavior and manure on the body under moderate degree. Due to the low prevalence and variability of welfare factors in the assessed farms, many of them were not included in linear regression analysis, however, it was possible to verify that factors related to welfare affect the performance and mortality of the animals. The characterization of the hospital pens was developed through the face-to-face questionnaire on the 46 farms, one of these farms being distinct from the previous evaluation, totaling about 41,054 animals. One hundred fifty hospital pens were identified and 97 of them had at least one animal housed, totaling 299 animals kept in these acommodations. Less than 1.5% of the total capacity of animals housing on these farms were in hospital pens. In 47.83% of the farms, there were no differences between the hospital and common pens regarding the general management. The environmental and facilities characteristics were similar in most hospital pens. Respiratory problems were the main reason for transferring pigs from the common to hospital pens. The assessed farms have hospital pens in sufficient amount, however there is no pattern among the respondents about where to house the recovered animals.

A suinocultura é uma das atividades agropecuárias mais importantes do mundo. O Brasil possui um alto potencial produtivo, porém o consumo interno ainda é afetado por fatores como preconceito e desinformação, sendo necessário um estímulo ao consumo da carne suína in natura. Foram avaliados os músculos bíceps femoralis, longissimus thoracis, semimembranosus e semitendinosus de 19 suínos provenientes da cruza PIC X Danbred com média de 110 kg em pH, cor, marmoreio, perda de água por pressão, descongelamento e cocção, maciez, composição química, diâmetro de fibra, colágeno e a composição de ácidos graxos. A perda de líquido no descongelamento foi maior para o semimembranosus e longissimus thoracis em relação ao semitendinosus, não diferindo do biceps femoralis. A perda de líquido na cocção foi maior para o semimembranosus. O músculo longissimus thoracis apresentou maior luminosudade em relação ao semimembranosus e o biceps femoralis, não diferindo do semitendinosus. O chroma foi maior para o semitendinosus e biceps femoralis comparado ao longissimus thoracis e o semimembranosus. A tonalidade foi maior no longissimus thoracis em relação ao semitendinosus e o biceps femoralis, não diferndo do semimembranosus. O longissimus thoracis apresentou maior teor de matéria seca e proteína em relação aos demais músculos. O extrato etéreo do semitendinosus foi maior que os demais músculos, o longissimus thoracis apresentou valor maior que o biceps femoralis e este por sua vez foi maior que o semimembranosus. A força de cisalhamento foi maior no biceps femoralis e no semitendinosus em relação ao longissimus thoracis e semimembranosus. O semimembranosus apresentou valor maior de índice de fragmentação miofibrilar que o biceps femoralis e este foi maior que o longissimus thoracis e semitendinosus. O diâmetro de fibra do longissimus thoracis foi maior que do semimembranosus e semitendinosus, embora não diferencie do biceps femoralis. O biceps femoralis apresentou mais colágeno que os demais músculos. Concluiu-se que os músculos longissimus thoracis e semimembranosus se destacaram quanto à maciez e composição química e o músculo semitendinosus se destacou perante os demais, por apresentar uma boa proporçao de ácidos graxos insaturados e destes grande parte são do tipo ômega 3, precursores de uma boa saúde cardiovascular, ou seja, o consumo de carne suína in natura é propício, estando de acordo com níveis nutricionais indicados para uma alimentação saudável, devendo então ter seu consumo mais incentivado. The swine production is one of the most important agricultural activities in the world. The Brazil has a high productive potential, however the internal market consumption is affected by factors like prejudice and miss information. It is necessary an stimulation to increase the swine fresh meat consumption increase, therefore this study evaluate the biceps femoralis, longissimus thoracis, semimembranosus e semitendinosus muscles from 19 animals PIC x Danbred hibrids in pH, color, marbling, water losses, tenderness, chemical composition, fiber diameter, collagen and fatty acid composition. The liquid loss on defrosting was higher for semimembranosus and longissimus thoracis in relation to semitendinosus, having no differences from biceps femoralis. The liquid losses on cooking was higher for the semimembranosus. The longissimus thoracis show higher luminosity than semimembranosus and biceps femoralis, but not different from semitendinosus. The chroma evaluation was higher for semitendinosus and biceps than longissimus and semimembranosus. The hue measured was higher on longissimus thoracis in relation to semitendinosus and biceps femoralis, but was not different that the semimembranosus. The longissimus thoracis presented higher dry matter and crude protein in relation the other muscles. The ether extract from semitendinosus was higher than the other muscles, the longissimus thoracis had higher value than the biceps femoralis and this was higher than semimembranosus. The shear force was higher for the biceps femoralis and semitendinosus in relation to the longissimus thoracis and semimembranosus. The semimembranosus show higher value for the miofibrilar fragmentation index than the biceps femoralis and this was higher than longissimus thoracis and semitendinosus. The fiber diameter for the longissimus thoracis was higher than the semimembranosus and semitendinosus, but not different from biceps femoralis. The biceps femoralis presented more collagen content than the other muscles. The conclusion was the longissimus thoracis muscle and semimembranosus stood out for softness and chemical composition and the semitendinosus muscle stood before the other, it presents a good proportion of unsaturated fatty acids and these are largely the type omega 3, precursors of a good cardiovascular health, ie the consumption of fresh pork is conducive, which is consistent with nutritional levels recommended for healthy eating and should then have its most encouraged consumption.
