Abstract Patients with type 1 diabetes are subject to exogenous insulin injections, whether manually or through (semi)automated insulin pumps. Basic knowledge of the patient’s characteristics and flexible insulin therapy (FIT) parameters are then needed. Specifically, artificial pancreas-like closed-loop insulin delivery systems are some of the most promising devices for substituting for endogenous insulin secretion in type 1 diabetes patients. However, these devices require self-reported information such as carbohydrates or physical activity from the patient, introducing potential miscalculations and delays that can have life-threatening consequences. Here, we display a metamodel for glucose-insulin dynamics that is subject to carbohydrate ingestion and aerobic physical activity. This metamodel incorporates major existing knowledge-based models. We derive comprehensive and universal definitions of the underlying FIT parameters to form an insulin sensitivity factor (ISF). In addition, the relevance of physical activity modelling is assessed, and the FIT is updated to take physical exercise into account. Specifically, we cope with physical activity by using heart rate sensors (watches) with a fully automated closed insulin loop, aiming to maximize the time spent in the glycaemic range (75.5% in the range and 1.3% below the range for hypoglycaemia on a virtual patient simulator).These mathematical parameter definitions are interesting on their own, may be new tools for assessing mathematical models and can ultimately be used in closed-loop artificial pancreas algorithms or to extend distinguished FIT.

The environment model for the description of the location of carbonate ions in apatites predicts that approximately half of the carbonate occupies the apatite channel. This model relies on the influence of entities surrounding the carbonate on its IR spectrum and can be used to determine how various substituents affect the location and structure of that ion. Careful deconvolution (peak-fitting) of the asymmetric carbonate IR region was used to determine the percentage of A-type (channel) ions, A′-type (channel with either a Ca2+ vacancy or substitution of Na+ for Ca2+) ions, and B-type (substitution for phosphate) ions. In our previous applications of this model, we have looked at the effect of alkali metal ions, such as sodium, lithium, and potassium, the ammonium ion, and the rare earth europium ion. In the present work, we explore the incorporation of the first-row transition metal ions and find that they have little effect on the location of the carbonate ion. Like the un-substituted carbonated apatite, these apatites contain about half of the carbonate in the channel, at least in derivatives that contain up to half a mole of the metal ion per mole of apatite. Attempts to incorporate greater amounts of metal ions by aqueous ion-combination reactions generally lead to lower-resolution XRD patterns and IR spectra that produce greater uncertainties in the peak-fitting modeling.

This study examines the nature of phubbing (i.e., smartphone snubbing) within an attachment theory perspective to empirically demonstrate both direct and indirect associations between attachment avoidance, smartphone attachment, self-regulation, and phubbing within a sample of 440 young adults. The study provides empirical evidence indicating smartphone attachment and self-regulation mediate the relationship between avoidant attachment and phubbing. Six hypotheses are posited, and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) controlling for age, gender, and time spent per day on smartphones was performed to test the hypothesized relationships. The CFA model was confirmed, and all six hypotheses were supported revealing the joint-mediated effect of smartphone attachment and self-regulation on the relationship between avoidant attachment style and phubbing.

Lately, increasing concern has focused on the incessant and intrusive use of smartphones across a wide range of interpersonal and relational contexts. Of concern is that many people appear to snub someone during face-to-face interactions by focusing more on their smartphone than on their relational partner, namely, phubbing. Individuals with insecure attachment styles may phub their intimate others more often. However, such relationships have not been examined. This study used a cross-sectional design to examine key relationships between insecure attachment styles on phubbing. An online survey was conducted to examine the relationships between the variables of this study (N=444, 72% female: mean age 20). The analyses revealed both anxious-preoccupied and dismissive-avoidant attachment styles to be positively associated with phubbing. Moreover, both insecure attachment styles indirectly predicted phubbing through problematic smartphone use (PSU). Insecure attachment styles appear to impact how often people phub others within intimate relationships, and further, PSU may function as a mechanism linking these insecure attachment styles with phubbing.

For the past decade, Spain has been a European leader in the transformation to open access publishing. About 70 percent of Spanish journals publish freely online — far higher than world averages. Conversations with two of Spain's foremost scholarly communication experts describe the conditions that have been conducive to academic openness in the region of Catalonia in particular. Among those conditions are stable public funding, an effective consortial library infrastructure, and supportive intellectual environments.

Heuristics can interfere with information processing and hinder decision-making when more systematic processes that might lead to better decisions are ignored. Based on the heuristic-systematic model (HSM) of information processing, a serious training game (called MACBETH) was designed to address and mitigate cognitive biases that interfere with the analysis of evidence and the generation of hypotheses. Two biases are the focus of this paper - fundamental attribution error and confirmation bias. The efficacy of the serious game on knowledge and mitigation of biases was examined using an experiment in which participants (N = 703) either played the MACBETH game or watched an instructional video about the biases. Results demonstrate the game to be more effective than the video at mitigating cognitive biases when explicit training methods are combined with repetitive play. Moreover, explicit instruction within the game provided greater familiarity and knowledge of the biases relative to implicit instruction. Suggestions for game development for purposes of enhancing cognitive processing and bias mitigation based on the MACBETH game design are discussed. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
