3. Special education needs co-ordinators perceptions of local education support services with particular reference to pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties : A case study of Luton local authority

Abstract

This Thesis is a case study of Luton Local Authority (LA) and its approach to delivering special educational needs (SEN) support services to Luton schools. The study concentrates on the delivery of behaviour support to schools and pupils and explores how pupils with social emotional and behavioural difficulties may be included or excluded from school as a result of this support. The case study incorporates a multi-method research strategy, which sought to gain an LA perspective of service delivery by involving all Luton's special educational needs co-ordinators (SENCOs) in a questionnaire about behaviour support service delivery to their schools. The case study approach also involved using semi-structured interviews with thirteen Luton SENCOs. In Luton the delivery mechanism for SEN support services is through termly meetings with schools. These school consultation meetings (SCMs) are the strategy used by the LA to deliver support services. The study involved observing eight SCMs so that first hand knowledge of the delivery process could be investigated. The data collected is presented in three layers. Layer one Presents the questionnaire data, layer two presents the inter-view data and layer three presents the observation data. All three data sets are presented under the key research questions. The three key research questions are: 1) How do schools use School Consultation Meetings to access Behaviour Support? 2) Who from the LA carries out the Behaviour Support work with the Schools? 3) Why have SEN support services, which focus on pupil deficits instead of pupil strengths? The case study found that the concept of SEN is a contentious and complex issue, which is subject to redefinition over time. The English education system is viewed as being segregationist and the concept of inclusion is found to apply to different pupils along class, ethnic and gender dimensions.

7. Art-by-Telephone: Design and Evaluation.

Abstract

The Art-by-Telephone program, funded under Title III of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, involved rural high schools in Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, and Utah. The program was designed to offer art instruction from a master teacher to students enrolled in high schools with limited financial resources. Instruction in art was provided by joining a number of widely separated small rural high schools into a conference situation in which all units of the system, including the instructor, were served by a common, 2-way-communication, amplified telephone service. The necessary telephone lines were leased at a special conference service rate for 50 minutes per week. In accordance with a prearranged schedule, the telephone conference operator initiated the necessary line signals to bring all participating schools and a master teacher into a joined, open-line communication setting. Each school was equipped with a telephone amplified receiver and transmitter so that students in any area of their classroom could hear all conversation and could also initiate oral responses. In addition to the amplified telephone equipment, each participating school was equipped with an overhead projector, 35-mm slide projector, tape recorder, and projection screen. The program operated for 2 years and was considered a pioneering success for the Western States Small Schools Project. Eight appendices are included. (AL)

Abstract

Angioplasty and stenting emerged as the less invasive treatment options compared to open surgical revascularization for the management of patients with chronic mesenteric ischemia (CMI). However, endovascular techniques may not achieve symptomatic relief in many patients with CMI. We report our results from the endovascular management of patients with CMI. Data were reviewed from 45 patients undergoing celiac and/or mesenteric angioplasty and stenting for CMI, from October 2006 to January 2016. Angioplasty and stenting of celiac and/or mesenteric arteries were successful in relieving symptoms completely in 29 of 45 and partially in 6 of 45 patients. Only 10 of 45 patients mentioned no improvement, while symptom recurrence occurred in another 3 of 45 patients between 3 and 36 months postprocedurally due to stent occlusion. Angioplasty and stenting of celiac and/or mesenteric arteries provide symptomatic relief in a considerable percentage of patients with CMI. If symptoms fail to improve, an open surgical revascularization procedure should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Self-report measures of empathy and emotional intelligence have frequently revealed significant gender differences, with females typically scoring higher than males on these dimensions. In this study, we investigated whether, in line with a social identity approach, manipulating the gender normativity of empathy and emotional intelligence would ameliorate typically observed differences. Male and female participants (N = 330) were randomly assigned to read one of three narratives comprising fictitious neurological research evidence which claimed that males (Condition 1) or females (Condition 2) or neither males nor females (Condition 3) scored higher on measures of empathy and emotional intelligence. Results indicated that, in Conditions 2 and 3, females scored significantly higher than males on self-reported empathy. However, when information suggested that males were superior to females (Condition 1), no significant gender differences in self-reported empathy were observed. A similar pattern was found for emotional intelligence, however the predicted interaction effect failed to reach significance. The role of social context in determining gender differences in emotional functioning is discussed with particular reference to gender differences in motivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
