A significant amount of star formation occurs and has occurred in environments unlike the solar neighbourhood. The majority of stars formed closer to the peak of the cosmic star formation rate (z > 1.3) and a great deal of star formation presently occurs in the central molecular zone (CMZ) of the Galaxy. These environments are unified by the presence of a high interstellar radiation field (ISRF) and a high cosmic ray ionisation rate (CRIR). Numerical studies of stellar birth typically neglect this fact, and those that do not have thus far been limited in scope. In this work we present the first comprehensive analysis of hydrodynamical simulations of star formation in extreme environments where we have increased the ISRF and CRIR to values typical of the CMZ and starburst galaxies. We note changes in the fragmentation behaviour on both the core and stellar system scale, leading to top-heavy core and stellar system mass functions in high ISRF/CRIR clouds. Clouds fragment less on the core scale, producing fewer but more massive cores. Conversely, the cores fragment more intensely and produce richer clusters of stellar systems. We present a picture where high ISRF/CRIR clouds fragment less on the scale of cores and clumps, but more on the scale of stellar systems. In the Milky Way and other main-sequence galaxies, stars form exclusively in molecular gas, which is traced by CO emission. However, low metallicity dwarf galaxies are often `CO-dark' in the sense that CO emission is not observable even at the high resolution and sensitivities of modern observing facilities. In this work we use ultra high-resolution simulations of four low-metalicity dwarf galaxies (which resolve star formation down to the scale of star-forming cores, 0.01 pc) combined with a time-dependent treatment of the chemistry of the interstellar medium, to investigate the star formation environment in this previously hidden regime. By generating synthetic observations of our models we show that the galaxies have high to extremely high dark gas fractions (0.13 to 1.00 dependent on beam size and conditions), yet despite this form stars. However, when examined on smaller scales, we find that the stars still form in regions dominated by molecular gas, it is simply that these are far smaller than the scale of the beam (1.5"). To advance our understanding of the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) of our Galaxy, numerical models of Milky Way (MW) type galaxies are widely used. However, most models only vaguely resemble the MW (e.g. in total mass), and often use imposed analytic potentials (which cannot evolve dynamically). This poses a problem in asserting their applicability for the interpretation of observations of our own Galaxy. The goal of this work is to identify a numerical model that is not only a MW-type galaxy, but one that can mimic some of the main observed structures of our Galaxy, using dynamically evolving potentials, so that it can be used as a base model to study the ISM cycle in a galaxy like our own. This paper introduces a suite of 15 MW-type galaxy models developed using the {\sc arepo} numerical code, that are compared to Galactic observations of $^{12}$CO and \ion{H}{I} emission via longitude-velocity plots, from where we extract and compare the skeletons of major galactic features and the terminal gas velocities. We found that our best-fitting model to the overall structure, also reproduces some of the more specific observed features of the MW, including a bar with a pattern speed of $30.0 \pm 0.2$ km\,s$^{-1}$\,kpc$^{-1}$, a bar half-length of $3.2 \pm 0.8$\,kpc. Our model shows large streaming motions around spiral arms, and strong radial motions well beyond the inner bar. Star formation estimates based on the counting of YSOs is commonly applied to nearby star-forming regions in the Galaxy. With this method, the SFRs are measured using the counts of YSOs in a particular protostellar Class, a typical protostellar mass, and the lifetime associated with this Class. However, the assumptions underlying the validity of the method such as that of a constant star formation history (SFH) and whether the method is valid for all protostellar Classes has never been fully tested. In this work, we use Monte Carlo models to test the validity of the method. We build synthetic clusters in which stars form at times that are randomly drawn from a specified SFH. The latter is either constant or time-dependent with a burst like behavior. The masses of the protostars are randomly drawn from an IMF which can be either similar to that of the Milky Way field or be variable . For each star in every cluster, the lifetimes associated with the different protostellar classes are also randomly drawn from Gaussian distribution functions centered around their most likely value as suggested by the observations. We find that only the SFR derived using the Class 0 population can reproduce the true SFR at all epochs, and this is true irrespective of the shape of the SFH. For a constant SFH, the SFR derived using the more evolved populations of protostars (Classes I, F, II, and III) reproduce the real SFR only at later epochs which correspond to epochs at which their numbers have reached a steady state. For a time-dependent burst-like SFH, all SFR estimates based on the number counts of the evolved populations fail to reproduce the true SFR. We also show how the offsets between Class I and Class II based SFRs and the true SFR plotted as a function of the number ratios of Class I and Class II versus Class III YSOs can be used in order to constrain the SFH of observed molecular clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Halos with masses in excess of the atomic limit are believed to be ideal environments in which to form heavy black hole seeds with masses above 10^3 Msun. In cases where the H_2 fraction is suppressed this is expected to lead to reduced fragmentation of the gas and the generation of a top heavy initial mass function. In extreme cases this can result in the formation of massive black hole seeds. Resolving the initial fragmentation scale and the resulting protostellar masses has, until now, not been robustly tested. Cosmological simulations were performed with the moving mesh code Arepo using a primordial chemistry network until z = 11. Three haloes with masses in excess of the atomic cooling mass were then selected for detailed examination via zoom-ins. The highest resolution simulations resolve densities up to 10^-6 g cm^-3 (10^18 cm^-3) and capture a further 100 yr of fragmentation behaviour at the center of the halo. Our simulations show intense fragmentation in the central region of the halos, leading to a large number of near-solar mass protostars. Despite the increased fragmentation the halos produce a protostellar mass spectrum that peaks at higher masses relative to standard Population III star forming halos. The most massive protostars have accretion rates of 10^-3-10^-1 Msun yr^-1 after the first 100 years of evolution, while the total mass of the central region grows at 1 Msun yr^-1. Lower resolution zoom-ins show that the total mass of the system continues to accrete at 1 Msun yr^-1 for at least 10^4 yr, although how this mass is distributed amongst the rapidly growing number of protostars is unclear. However, assuming that a fraction of stars can continue to accrete rapidly the formation of a sub-population of stars with masses in excess of 10^3 Msun is likely in these halos., Comment: Submitted to A&A, comments welcome

Advanced primordial chemistry networks have been developed to model the collapse of metal-free baryonic gas within the gravitational well of dark matter (DM) halos and its subsequent collapse into Population III stars. At the low densities of 10^-26-10^-21 g cm-3 (10-3-10^2 cm-3) the collapse is dependent on H2 production, which is a function of the compressional heating provided by the DM potential. Once the gas decouples from the DM, the temperature-density relationship follows a well established path dictated by various chemical reactions until the formation of the protostar at 10^-4 g cm-3 (10^19 cm-3). Here we explore the feasibility of replacing the chemical network (CN) with a barotropic equation of state (EoS) just before the formation of the first protostar, to reduce the computational load of simulating the further fragmentation, evolution and characteristics of the very high density gas. We find a significant reduction in fragmentation when using the EoS. The EoS method produces a protostellar mass distribution that peaks at higher masses when compared to CN runs. The change in fragmentation behaviour is due to a lack of cold gas falling in through the disc around the first protostar when using an EoS. Despite this, the total mass accreted across all sinks was invariant to the switch to an EoS, hence the star formation rate (Msun yr^-1) is accurately predicted using an EoS. The EoS routine is approximately 4000 times faster than the CN, however this numerical gain is offset by the lack of accuracy in modelling secondary protostar formation and hence its use must be considered carefully., Comment: Accepted in the Open Journal of Astrophysics

Molecular hydrogen allows cooling in primordial gas, facilitating its collapse into Population III stars within primordial halos. Lyman-Werner (LW) radiation from these stars can escape the halo and delay further star formation by destroying H$_2$ in other halos. As cosmological simulations show that increasing the background LW field strength increases the average halo mass required for star formation, we perform follow-up simulations of selected halos to investigate the knock-on effects this has on the Population III IMF. We follow 5 halos for each of the $J_{21}$ = 0, 0.01 and 0.1 LW field strengths, resolving the pre-stellar core density of $10^{-6}$ g cm$^{-3}$ (10$^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$) before inserting sink particles and following the fragmentation behaviour for hundreds of years further. We find that the mass accreted onto sinks by the end of the simulations is proportional to the mass within the $\sim 10^{-2}$ pc molecular core, which is not correlated to the initial mass of the halo. As such, the IMFs for masses above the brown dwarf limit show little dependence on the LW strength, although they do show variance in the number of low-mass clumps formed. As the range of background LW field strengths tested here covers the most likely values from literature, we conclude that the IMF for so-called Pop III.2 stars is not significantly different from the initial population of Pop III.1 stars. The Population III initial mass function (IMF) is currently unknown, but recent studies agree that fragmentation of primordial gas gives a broader IMF than the initially suggested singular star per halo. In this study we introduce sink particle mergers into Arepo, to perform the first resolution study for primordial star formation simulations and present the first Population III simulations to run up to densities of 10-6g cm-3 for hundreds of years after the formation of sink particles. The total number of sinks formed increases with increasing sink particle creation density, without achieving numerical convergence. The total mass in sinks remains invariant to the maximum resolution and is safe to estimate using low resolution studies. This results in an IMF that shifts towards lower masses with increasing resolution. Greater numbers of sinks cause increased fragmentation-induced starvation of the most massive sink, yielding lower accretion rates, masses and ionising photons emitted per second. The lack of convergence up to densities 2 orders of magnitudes higher than all relevant chemical reactions suggests that the number of sinks will continue to grow with increasing resolution until H2 is fully dissociated and the collapse becomes almost adiabatic at 10-4g cm-3. These results imply that many Population III studies utilising sink particles have produced IMFs which have overestimated the masses of primordial stars, and underestimated the number of stars formed. HCN J$\, =\,$1$\, -\,$0 emission is commonly used as a dense gas tracer, thought to mainly arise from gas with densities $\mathrm{\sim 10^4\ -\ 10^5\ cm^{-3}}$. This has made it a popular tracer in star formation studies. However, there is increasing evidence from observational surveys of `resolved' molecular clouds that HCN can trace more diffuse gas. We investigate the relationship between gas density and HCN emission through post-processing of high resolution magnetohydrodynamical simulations of cloud-cloud collisions. We find that HCN emission traces gas with a mean volumetric density of $\mathrm{\sim 3 \times 10^3\ cm^{-3}}$ and a median visual extinction of $\mathrm{\sim 5\ mag}$. We therefore predict a characteristic density that is an order of magnitude less than the "standard" characteristic density of $\mathrm{n \sim 3 \times 10^4\ cm^{-3}}$. Indeed, we find in some cases that there is clear HCN emission from the cloud even though there is no gas denser than this standard critical density. We derive luminosity-to-mass conversion factors for the amount of gas at $A_{\rm V} > 8$ or at densities $n > 2.85 \times 10^{3} \: {\rm cm^{-3}}$ or $n > 3 \times 10^{4} \: {\rm cm^{-3}}$, finding values of $\alpha_{\rm HCN} = 6.79, 8.62$ and $27.98 \: {\rm M_{\odot}} ({\rm K \, km \, s^{-1} \, pc^{2}})$, respectively. In some cases, the luminosity to mass conversion factor predicted mass in regions where in actuality there contains no mass.

Collisions between giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are one of the pathways for massive star formation, due to the high densities created. However the enhancement of the star formation rate (SFR) is not well constrained. In this study we perform a parameter study of cloud-cloud collisions, and investigate how the resulting SFR depends on the details of set-up. Our parameter study explores variations in: collision speed; magnetic field inclination (with respect to the collisional axis); and resolution, as defined by the number of cells per Jeans length. In all our collision simulations we find a factor of 2-3 increase in the SFR compared to our no collision simulation, with star formation beginning sooner with a) high collisional velocities, b) parallel orientation between the magnetic field and collision axis, c) and lower resolution. The mean virial parameter of high density (and thus possible star-forming) gas increases with collisional velocity, but has little variation with magnetic field inclination. The alignment of the velocity and magnetic field remains uniform in low density environments but becomes more perpendicular with increasing density, indicating the compression of the magnetic field by collapsing gas. Comparing the trends in the SFR with other GMC collision studies, we find good agreement with studies that account for the gravitational boundedness of the gas in their star formation algorithm, but not with those that simply form stars above a prescribed density threshold. We present the sharpest and deepest near infrared photometric analysis of the core of R136, a newly formed massive star cluster at the centre of the 30 Doradus star forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We used the extreme adaptive optics of the SPHERE focal instrument implemented on the ESO Very Large Telescope and operated in its IRDIS imaging mode, for the second time with longer exposure time in the H- and K filters. Our aim was to (i) increase the number of resolved sources in the core of R136, and (ii) to compare with the first epoch to classify the properties of the detected common sources between the two epochs. Within the field of view (FOV) of 10.8"x12.1" (2.7pc x3.0pc), we detected 1499 sources in both H and K filters, for which 76% of these sources have visual companions closer than 0.2". The larger number of detected sources, enabled us to better sample the mass function (MF). The MF slopes are estimated at ages of 1, 1.5 and 2 Myr, at different radii, and for different mass ranges. The MF slopes for the mass range of 10-300 solar-mass are about 0.3 dex steeper than the mass range of 3-300 solar-mass, for the whole FOV and different radii. Comparing the JHK colours of 790 sources common in between the two epochs, 67% of detected sources in the outer region (r >3") are not consistent with evolutionary models at 1-2 Myr and with extinctions similar to the average cluster value, suggesting an origin from ongoing star formation within 30 Doradus, unrelated to R136., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, 6 tables. We present a statistical analysis of the gravoturbulent velocity fluctuations in molecular cloud complexes extracted from our "Cloud Factory" galactic-scale ISM simulation suite. For this purpose, we produce non-LTE $^{12}$CO J=1-0 synthetic observations and apply the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) reduction technique on a representative sample of cloud complexes. The velocity fluctuations are self-consistently generated by different physical mechanisms at play in our simulations, which include galactic-scale forces, gas self-gravity, and supernova feedback. The statistical analysis suggests that, even though purely gravitational effects are necessary to reproduce standard observational laws, they are not sufficient in most cases. We show that the extra injection of energy from supernova explosions plays a key role in establishing the global turbulent field and the local dynamics and morphology of molecular clouds. Additionally, we characterise structure function scaling parameters as a result of cloud environmental conditions: some of the complexes are immersed in diffuse (inter-arm) or dense (spiral-arm) environments, and others are influenced by embedded or external supernovae. In quiescent regions, we obtain time-evolving trajectories of scaling parameters driven by gravitational collapse and supersonic turbulent flows. Our findings suggests that a PCA-based statistical study is a robust method to diagnose the physical mechanisms that drive the gravoturbulent properties of molecular clouds. We propose a new model for the evolution of a star cluster's System Mass Function (SMF). The model involves both turbulent fragmentation and competitive accretion. Turbulent fragmentation creates low-mass seed proto-systems (i.e. single and multiple protostars). Some of these low-mass seed proto-systems then grow by competitive accretion to produce the high-mass power-law tail of the SMF. Turbulent fragmentation is relatively inefficient, in the sense that the creation of low-mass seed proto-systems only consumes a fraction, $\sim 23\%$ (at most $\sim 50\%$), of the mass available for star formation. The remaining mass is consumed by competitive accretion. Provided the accretion rate onto a proto-system is approximately proportional to its mass ($dm/dt \propto m$), the SMF develops a power-law tail at high masses with the Salpeter slope ($\sim -2.3$). If the rate of supply of mass accelerates, the rate of proto-system formation also accelerates, as appears to be observed in many clusters. However, even if the rate of supply of mass decreases, or ceases and then resumes, the SMF evolves homologously, retaining the same overall shape, and the high-mass power-law tail simply extends to ever higher masses until the supply of gas runs out completely. The Chabrier SMF can be reproduced very accurately if the seed proto-systems have an approximately log-normal mass distribution with median mass $\sim 0.11 {\rm M}_{_\odot}$ and logarithmic standard deviation $\sigma_{\log_{10}(M/{\rm M}_\odot)}\sim 0.47$)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 13 pages, 4 figures, 1 appendix

The Milky Way's central molecular zone (CMZ) has emerged in recent years as a unique laboratory for the study of star formation. Here we use the simulations presented in Tress et al. 2020 to investigate star formation in the CMZ. These simulations resolve the structure of the interstellar medium at sub-parsec resolution while also including the large-scale flow in which the CMZ is embedded. Our main findings are as follows. (1) While most of the star formation happens in the CMZ ring at $R\gtrsim100 {\, \rm pc}$, a significant amount also occurs closer to SgrA* at $R \lesssim 10{\, \rm pc}$. (2) Most of the star formation in the CMZ happens downstream of the apocentres, consistent with the "pearls-on-a-string" scenario, and in contrast to the notion that an absolute evolutionary timeline of star formation is triggered by pericentre passage. (3) Within the timescale of our simulations ($\sim100$ Myr), the depletion time of the CMZ is constant within a factor of $\sim2$. This suggests that variations in the star formation rate are primarily driven by variations in the mass of the CMZ, caused for example by AGN feedback or externally-induced changes in the bar-driven inflow rate, and not by variations in the depletion time. (4) We study the trajectories of newly born stars in our simulations. We find several examples that have age and 3D velocity compatible with those of the Arches and Quintuplet clusters. Our simulations suggest that these prominent clusters originated near the collision sites where the bar-driven inflow accretes onto the CMZ, at symmetrical locations with respect to the Galactic centre, and that they have already decoupled from the gas in which they were born., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We use hydrodynamical simulations to study the Milky Way's central molecular zone (CMZ). The simulations include a non-equilibrium chemical network, the gas self-gravity, star formation and supernova feedback. We resolve the structure of the interstellar medium at sub-parsec resolution while also capturing the interaction between the CMZ and the bar-driven large-scale flow out to $R\sim 5\kpc$. Our main findings are as follows: (1) The distinction between inner ($R\lesssim120$~pc) and outer ($120\lesssim R\lesssim450$~pc) CMZ that is sometimes proposed in the literature is unnecessary. Instead, the CMZ is best described as single structure, namely a star-forming ring with outer radius $R\simeq 200$~pc which includes the 1.3$^\circ$ complex and which is directly interacting with the dust lanes that mediate the bar-driven inflow. (2) This accretion can induce a significant tilt of the CMZ out of the plane. A tilted CMZ might provide an alternative explanation to the $\infty$-shaped structure identified in Herschel data by Molinari et al. 2011. (3) The bar in our simulation efficiently drives an inflow from the Galactic disc ($R\simeq 3$~kpc) down to the CMZ ($R\simeq200$~pc) of the order of $1\rm\,M_\odot\,yr^{-1}$, consistent with observational determinations. (4) Supernova feedback can drive an inflow from the CMZ inwards towards the circumnuclear disc of the order of $\sim0.03\,\rm M_\odot\,yr^{-1}$. (5) We give a new interpretation for the 3D placement of the 20 and 50 km s$^{-1}$ clouds, according to which they are close ($R\lesssim30$~pc) to the Galactic centre, but are also connected to the larger-scale streams at $R\gtrsim100$~pc., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We use the moving-mesh code AREPO to investigate the effects of different levels of rotation and turbulence on the fragmentation of primordial gas and the formation of Population III stars. We consider 9 different combinations of turbulence and rotation and carry out 5 different realizations of each setup, yielding one of the largest sets of simulations of Population III star formation ever performed. We find that fragmentation in Population III star-forming systems is a highly chaotic process and show that the outcomes of individual realizations of the same initial conditions often vary significantly. However, some general trends are apparent. Increasing the turbulent energy promotes fragmentation, while increasing the rotational energy inhibits fragmentation. Within the 1000 yr period that we simulate, runs including turbulence yield flat protostellar mass functions while purely rotational runs show a more top-heavy distribution. The masses of the individual protostars are distributed over a wide range from a few $10^{-3} \, {\rm M_{\odot}}$ to several tens of ${\rm M_\odot}$. The total mass growth rate of the stellar systems remains high throughout the simulations and depends only weakly on the degree of rotation and turbulence. Mergers between protostars are common, but predictions of the merger fraction are highly sensitive to the criterion used to decide whether two protostars should merge. Previous studies of Population III star formation have often considered only one realization per set of initial conditions. We introduce a new suite of simulations, "The Cloud Factory", which self-consistently forms molecular cloud complexes at high enough resolution to resolve internal substructure (up to 0.25 Msol in mass) all while including galactic-scale forces. We use a version of the Arepo code modified to include a detailed treatment of the physics of the cold molecular ISM, and an analytical galactic gravitational potential for computational efficiency. The simulations have nested levels of resolution, with the lowest layer tied to tracer particles injected into individual cloud complexes. These tracer refinement regions are embedded in the larger simulation so continue to experience forces from outside the cloud. This allows the simulations to act as a laboratory for testing the effect of galactic environment on star formation. Here we introduce our method and investigate the effect of galactic environment on filamentary clouds. We find that cloud complexes formed after a clustered burst of feedback, have shorter lengths and are less likely to fragment compared to quiescent clouds (e.g. the Musca filament) or those dominated by the galactic potential (e.g. Nessie). Spiral arms and differential rotation preferentially align filaments, but strong feedback randomises them. Long filaments formed within the cloud complexes are necessarily coherent with low internal velocity gradients, which has implications for the formation of filamentary star-clusters. Cloud complexes formed in regions dominated by supernova feedback have fewer star-forming cores, and these are more widely distributed. We present here the first of a series of papers aimed at better understanding the evolution and properties of giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in a galactic context. We perform high resolution, three-dimensional {\sc arepo} simulations of an interacting galaxy inspired by the well-observed M51 galaxy. Our fiducial simulations include a non-equilibrium, time-dependent, chemical network that follows the evolution of atomic and molecular hydrogen as well as carbon and oxygen self-consistently. Our calculations also treat gas self-gravity and subsequent star formation (described by sink particles), and coupled supernova feedback. In the densest parts of the simulated interstellar medium (ISM) we reach sub-parsec resolution, granting us the ability to resolve individual GMCs and their formation and destruction self-consistently throughout the galaxy. In this initial work we focus on the general properties of the ISM with a particular focus on the cold star-forming gas. We discuss the role of the interaction with the companion galaxy in generating cold molecular gas and controlling stellar birth. We find that while the interaction drives large-scale gas flows and induces spiral arms in the galaxy, it is of secondary importance in determining gas fractions in the different ISM phases and the overall star-formation rate. The behaviour of the gas on small GMC scales instead is mostly controlled by the self-regulating property of the ISM driven by coupled feedback.

Observations of molecular gas near the Galactic centre ($| l | < 10^\circ$, $| b | < 1^\circ$) reveal the presence of a distinct population of enigmatic compact clouds which are characterised by extreme velocity dispersions ($\Delta v > 100\, \rm km/s$). These Extended Velocity Features (EVFs) are very prominent in the datacubes and dominate the kinematics of molecular gas just outside the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ). The prototypical example of such a cloud is Bania Clump 2. We show that similar features are naturally produced in simulations of gas flow in a realistic barred potential. We analyse the structure of the features obtained in the simulations and use this to interpret the observations. We find that the features arise from collisions between material that has been infalling rapidly along the dust lanes of the Milky Way bar and material that belongs to one of the following two categories: (i) material that has `overshot' after falling down the dust lanes on the opposite side; (ii) material which is part of the CMZ. Both types of collisions involve gas with large differences in the line-of-sight velocities, which is what produces the observed extreme velocity dispersions. Examples of both categories can be identified in the observations. If our interpretation is correct, we are directly witnessing (a) collisions of clouds with relative speeds of $\sim 200\, \rm km/s$ and (b) the process of accretion of fresh gas onto the CMZ., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures. We introduce our new code MYOSOTIS (Make Your Own Synthetic ObservaTIonS) which is designed to produce synthetic observations from simulated clusters. The code can synthesise observations from both ground- and spaced-based observatories, for a range of different filters, observational conditions and angular/spectral resolution. In this paper, we highlight some of the features of MYOSOTIS, creating synthetic observations from young massive star clusters. Our model clusters are simulated using nbody6 code and have different total masses, half-mass radii, and binary fractions. The synthetic observations are made at the age of 2 Myr with Solar metallicity and under different extinction conditions. For each cluster, we create synthetic images of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in the visible (WFPC2/F555W) as well as Very Large Telescopes (VLT) in the nearIR (SPHERE/IRDIS/Ks). We show how MYOSOTIS can be used to look at mass function (MF) determinations. For this aim we re-estimate stellar masses using a photometric analysis on the synthetic images. The synthetic MF slopes are compared to their actual values. Our photometric analysis demonstrate that depending on the adopted filter, extinction, angular resolution and pixel sampling of the instruments, the power-law index of the underlying MFs can be shallower than the observed ones by at least 0.25 dex which is in agreement with the observed discrepancies reported in the literature, specially for young star clusters., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, Accepted to be published in MNRAS

Our understanding of how molecular clouds form in the interstellar medium (ISM) would be greatly helped if we had a reliable observational tracer of the gas flows responsible for forming the clouds. Fine structure emission from singly ionised and neutral carbon ([CII], [CI]) and rotational line emission from CO are all observed to be associated with molecular clouds. However, it remains unclear whether any of these tracers can be used to study the inflow of gas onto an assembling cloud, or whether they primarily trace the cloud once it has already assembled. In this paper, we address this issue with the help of high resolution simulations of molecular cloud formation that include a sophisticated treatment of the chemistry and thermal physics of the ISM. Our simulations demonstrate that both [CI] and CO emission trace gas that is predominantly molecular, with a density n ~ 500-1000 cm$^{-3}$, much larger than the density of the inflowing gas. [CII] traces lower density material (n ~ 100 cm$^{-3}$) that is mainly atomic at early times. A large fraction of the [CII] emission traces the same structures as the [CI] or CO emission, but some arises in the inflowing gas. Unfortunately, this emission is very faint and will be difficult to detect with current observational facilities, even for clouds situated in regions with an elevated interstellar radiation field., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures. Line emission is strongly dependent on the local environmental conditions in which the emitting tracers reside. In this work, we focus on modelling the CO emission from simulated giant molecular clouds (GMCs), and study the variations in the resulting line ratios arising from the emission from the $J=1-0$, $J=2-1$ and $J=3-2$ transitions. We perform a set of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations with time-dependent chemistry, in which environmental conditions -- including total cloud mass, density, size, velocity dispersion, metallicity, interstellar radiation field (ISRF) and the cosmic ray ionisation rate (CRIR) -- were systematically varied. The simulations were then post-processed using radiative transfer to produce synthetic emission maps in the 3 transitions quoted above. We find that the cloud-averaged values of the line ratios can vary by up to $\pm 0.3$ dex, triggered by changes in the environmental conditions. Changes in the ISRF and/or in the CRIR have the largest impact on line ratios since they directly affect the abundance, temperature and distribution of CO-rich gas within the clouds. We show that the standard methods used to convert CO emission to H$_2$ column density can underestimate the total H$_2$ molecular gas in GMCs by factors of 2 or 3, depending on the environmental conditions in the clouds., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, 1 table

We present high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of isolated dwarf galaxies including self-gravity, non-equilibrium cooling and chemistry, interstellar radiation fields (IRSF) and shielding, star formation, and stellar feedback. This includes spatially and temporally varying photoelectric (PE) heating, photoionization, resolved supernova (SN) blast waves and metal enrichment. A new flexible method to sample the stellar initial mass function allows us to follow the contribution to the ISRF, the metal output and the SN delay times of individual massive stars. We find that SNe play the dominant role in regulating the global star formation rate, shaping the multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) and driving galactic outflows. Outflow rates (with mass-loading factors of a few) and hot gas fractions of the ISM increase with the number of SNe exploding in low-density environments where radiative energy losses are low. While PE heating alone can suppress star formation slightly more (a factor of a few) than SNe alone can do, it is unable to drive outflows and reproduce the multi-phase ISM that emerges naturally when SNe are included. These results are in conflict with recent results of Forbes et al. who concluded that PE heating is the dominant process suppressing star formation in dwarfs, about an order of magnitude more efficient than SNe. Potential origins for this discrepancy are discussed. In the absence of SNe and photoionization (mechanisms to disperse dense clouds), the impact of PE heating is highly overestimated owing to the (unrealistic) proximity of dense gas to the radiation sources. This leads to a substantial boost of the infrared continuum emission from the UV-irradiated dust and a far infrared line-to-continuum ratio too low compared to observations. The carbon monoxide (CO) rotational transition lines are the most common tracers of molecular gas within giant molecular clouds (MCs). We study the ratio ($R_{2-1/1-0}$) between CO's first two emission lines and examine what information it provides about the physical properties of the cloud. To study $R_{2-1/1-0}$ we perform smooth particle hydrodynamic simulations with time dependent chemistry (using GADGET-2), along with post-process radiative transfer calculations on an adaptive grid (using RADMC-3D) to create synthetic emission maps of a MC. $R_{2-1/1-0}$ has a bimodal distribution that is a consequence of the excitation properties of each line, given that $J=1$ reaches local thermal equilibrium (LTE) while $J=2$ is still sub-thermally excited in the considered clouds. The bimodality of $R_{2-1/1-0}$ serves as a tracer of the physical properties of different regions of the cloud and it helps constrain local temperatures, densities and opacities. Additionally this bimodal structure shows an important portion of the CO emission comes from diffuse regions of the cloud, suggesting that the commonly used conversion factor of $R_{2-1/1-0}\sim 0.7$ between both lines may need to be studied further., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Dust grains are an important component of the interstellar medium (ISM) of galaxies. We present the first direct measurement of the residence times of interstellar dust in the different ISM phases, and of the transition rates between these phases, in realistic hydrodynamical simulations of the multi-phase ISM. Our simulations include a time-dependent chemical network that follows the abundances of H^+, H, H_2, C^+ and CO and take into account self-shielding by gas and dust using a tree-based radiation transfer method. Supernova explosions are injected either at random locations, at density peaks, or as a mixture of the two. For each simulation, we investigate how matter circulates between the ISM phases and find more sizeable transitions than considered in simple mass exchange schemes in the literature. The derived residence times in the ISM phases are characterised by broad distributions, in particular for the molecular, warm and hot medium. The most realistic simulations with random and mixed driving have median residence times in the molecular, cold, warm and hot phase around 17, 7, 44 and 1 Myr, respectively. The transition rates measured in the random driving run are in good agreement with observations of Ti gas-phase depletion in the warm and cold phases in a simple depletion model, although the depletion in the molecular phase is under-predicted. Recent studies seem to suggest that the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in early-type galaxies might be different from a classical Kroupa or Chabrier IMF, i.e. contain a larger fraction of the total mass in low-mass stars. From a theoretical point of view, supersonic turbulence has been the subject of interest in many analytical theories proposing a strong correlation with the characteristic mass of the core mass function (CMF) in star forming regions, and as a consequence with the stellar IMF. Performing two suites of smoothed particles hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations with different mass resolutions, we aim at testing the effects of variations in the turbulent properties of a dense, star forming molecular cloud on the shape of the system mass function in different density regimes. While analytical theories predict a shift of the peak of the CMF towards lower masses with increasing velocity dispersion of the cloud, we observe in the low-density regime the opposite trend, with high Mach numbers giving rise to a top-heavy mass distribution. For the high-density regime we do not find any trend correlating the Mach number with the characteristic mass of the resulting IMF, implying that the dynamics of protostellar accretion discs and fragmentation on small scales is not strongly affected by turbulence driven at the scale of the cloud. Furthermore, we suggest that a significant fraction of dense cores are disrupted by turbulence before stars can be formed in their interior through gravitational collapse. We study the formation of galactic outflows from supernova explosions (SNe) with the moving-mesh code AREPO in a stratified column of gas with a surface density similar to the Milky Way disk at the solar circle. We compare different simulation models for SNe placement and energy feedback, including cosmic rays (CR), and find that models that place SNe in dense gas and account for CR diffusion are able to drive outflows with similar mass loading as obtained from a random placement of SNe with no CRs. Despite this similarity, CR-driven outflows differ in several other key properties including their overall clumpiness and velocity. Moreover, the forces driving these outflows originate in different sources of pressure, with the CR diffusion model relying on non-thermal pressure gradients to create an outflow driven by internal pressure and the random-placement model depending on kinetic pressure gradients to propel a ballistic outflow. In order to understand how molecular clouds form in the Galactic interstellar medium, we would like to be able to map the structure and kinematics of the gas flows responsible for forming them. However, doing so is observationally challenging. CO, the workhorse molecule for studies of molecular clouds, traces only relatively dense gas and hence only allows us to study those portions of the clouds that have already assembled. Numerical simulations suggest that the inflowing gas that forms these clouds is largely composed of CO-dark H2. These same simulations allow us to explore the usefulness of different tracers of this CO-dark molecular material, and we use them here to show that the [CII] fine structure line is potentially a very powerful tracer of this gas and should be readily detectable using modern instrumentation., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures. The halo of the Milky Way contains a hot plasma with a surface brightness in soft X-rays of the order $10^{-12}$erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ deg$^{-2}$. The origin of this gas is unclear, but so far numerical models of galactic star formation have failed to reproduce such a large surface brightness by several orders of magnitude. In this paper, we analyze simulations of the turbulent, magnetized, multi-phase interstellar medium including thermal feedback by supernova explosions as well as cosmic-ray feedback. We include a time-dependent chemical network, self-shielding by gas and dust, and self-gravity. Pure thermal feedback alone is sufficient to produce the observed surface brightness, although it is very sensitive to the supernova rate. Cosmic rays suppress this sensitivity and reduce the surface brightness because they drive cooler outflows. Self-gravity has by far the largest effect because it accumulates the diffuse gas in the disk in dense clumps and filaments, so that supernovae exploding in voids can eject a large amount of hot gas into the halo. This can boost the surface brightness by several orders of magnitude. Although our simulations do not reach a steady state, all simulations produce surface brightness values of the same order of magnitude as the observations, with the exact value depending sensitively on the simulation parameters. We conclude that star formation feedback alone is sufficient to explain the origin of the hot halo gas, but measurements of the surface brightness alone do not provide useful diagnostics for the study of galactic star formation., Comment: ApJ Letters in press

We study the connection of star formation to atomic (HI) and molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) in isolated, low metallicity dwarf galaxies with high-resolution ($m_{\rm gas}$ = 4 M$_\odot$, $N_{\rm ngb}$ = 100) SPH simulations. The model includes self-gravity, non-equilibrium cooling, shielding from an interstellar radiation field, the chemistry of H$_2$ formation, H$_2$-independent star formation, supernova feedback and metal enrichment. We find that the H$_2$ mass fraction is sensitive to the adopted dust-to-gas ratio and the strength of the interstellar radiation field, while the star formation rate is not. Star formation is regulated by stellar feedback, keeping the gas out of thermal equilibrium for densities $n <$ 1 cm$^{-3}$. Because of the long chemical timescales, the H$_2$ mass remains out of chemical equilibrium throughout the simulation. Star formation is well-correlated with cold ( T $\leqslant$ 100 K ) gas, but this dense and cold gas - the reservoir for star formation - is dominated by HI, not H$_2$. In addition, a significant fraction of H$_2$ resides in a diffuse, warm phase, which is not star-forming. The ISM is dominated by warm gas (100 K $<$ T $\leqslant 3\times 10^4$ K) both in mass and in volume. The scale height of the gaseous disc increases with radius while the cold gas is always confined to a thin layer in the mid-plane. The cold gas fraction is regulated by feedback at small radii and by the assumed radiation field at large radii. The decreasing cold gas fractions result in a rapid increase in depletion time (up to 100 Gyrs) for total gas surface densities $\Sigma_{\rm HI+H_2} \lesssim$ 10 M$_\odot$pc$^{-2}$, in agreement with observations of dwarf galaxies in the Kennicutt-Schmidt plane., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present a hydrodynamical simulation of the turbulent, magnetized, supernova (SN)-driven interstellar medium (ISM) in a stratified box that dynamically couples the injection and evolution of cosmic rays (CRs) and a self-consistent evolution of the chemical composition. CRs are treated as a relativistic fluid in the advection-diffusion approximation. The thermodynamic evolution of the gas is computed using a chemical network that follows the abundances of H+, H, H2, CO, C+, and free electrons and includes (self-)shielding of the gas and dust. We find that CRs perceptibly thicken the disk with the heights of 90% (70%) enclosed mass reaching ~1.5 kpc (~0.2 kpc). The simulations indicate that CRs alone can launch and sustain strong outflows of atomic and ionized gas with mass loading factors of order unity, even in solar neighborhood conditions and with a CR energy injection per SN of 10^50 erg, 10% of the fiducial thermal energy of an SN. The CR-driven outflows have moderate launching velocities close to the midplane (~100 km/s) and are denser (\rho~1e-24 - 1e-26 g/cm^3), smoother, and colder than the (thermal) SN-driven winds. We run numerical simulations of molecular clouds (MCs), adopting properties similar to those found in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way. For this, we employ the moving mesh code Arepo and perform simulations which account for a simplified treatment of time-dependent chemistry and the non-isothermal nature of gas and dust. We perform simulations using an initial density of n_0 = 10^3 cm^{-3} and a mass of 1.3x10^5 M_sun. Furthermore, we vary the virial parameter, defined as the ratio of kinetic and potential energy, alpha = E_{kin} / |E_{pot}|, by adjusting the velocity dispersion. We set it to alpha = 0.5, 2.0 and 8.0, in order to analyze the impact of the kinetic energy on our results. We account for the extreme conditions in the CMZ and increase both the interstellar radiation field (ISRF) and the cosmic-ray flux (CRF) by a factor of 1000 compared to the values found in the solar neighbourhood. We use the radiative transfer code RADMC-3D to compute synthetic images in various diagnostic lines. These are [CII] at 158 micron, [OI] (145 micron), [OI] (63 micron), 12CO (J = 1 -> 0) and 13CO (J = 1 -> 0) at 2600 micron and 2720 micron, respectively. When alpha is large, the turbulence disperses much of the gas in the cloud, reducing its mean density and allowing the ISRF to penetrate more deeply into the cloud's interior. This significantly alters the chemical composition of the cloud, leading to the dissociation of a significant amount of the molecular gas. On the other hand, when alpha is small, the cloud remains compact, allowing more of the molecular gas to survive. We show that in each case the atomic tracers accurately reflect most of the physical properties of both the H2 and the total gas of the cloud and that they provide a useful alternative to molecular lines when studying the ISM in the CMZ., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS (Version 1.1)

Carbon monoxide (CO) is widely used as a tracer of molecular hydrogen (H2) in metal-rich galaxies, but is known to become ineffective in low metallicity dwarf galaxies. Atomic carbon has been suggested as a superior tracer of H2 in these metal-poor systems, but its suitability remains unproven. To help us to assess how well atomic carbon traces H2 at low metallicity, we have performed a series of numerical simulations of turbulent molecular clouds that cover a wide range of different metallicities. Our simulations demonstrate that in star-forming clouds, the conversion factor between [CI] emission and H2 mass, $X_{\rm CI}$, scales approximately as $X_{\rm CI} \propto Z^{-1}$. We recover a similar scaling for the CO-to-H2 conversion factor, $X_{\rm CO}$, but find that at this point in the evolution of the clouds, $X_{\rm CO}$ is consistently smaller than $X_{\rm CI}$, by a factor of a few or more. We have also examined how $X_{\rm CI}$ and $X_{\rm CO}$ evolve with time. We find that $X_{\rm CI}$ does not vary strongly with time, demonstrating that atomic carbon remains a good tracer of H2 in metal-poor systems even at times significantly before the onset of star formation. On the other hand, $X_{\rm CO}$ varies very strongly with time in metal-poor clouds, showing that CO does not trace H2 well in starless clouds at low metallicity., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures. The SILCC project (SImulating the Life-Cycle of molecular Clouds) aims at a more self-consistent understanding of the interstellar medium (ISM) on small scales and its link to galaxy evolution. We present three-dimensional (magneto)hydrodynamic simulations of the ISM in a vertically stratified box including self-gravity, an external potential due to the stellar component of the galactic disc, and stellar feedback in the form of an interstellar radiation field and supernovae (SNe). The cooling of the gas is based on a chemical network that follows the abundances of H+, H, H2, C+, and CO and takes shielding into account consistently. We vary the SN feedback by comparing different SN rates, clustering and different positioning, in particular SNe in density peaks and at random positions, which has a major impact on the dynamics. Only for random SN positions the energy is injected in sufficiently low-density environments to reduce energy losses and enhance the effective kinetic coupling of the SNe with the gas. This leads to more realistic velocity dispersions (\sigma_HI ~ 0.8\sigma_(300-8000K) ~ 10-20km/s, \sigma_H\alpha ~ 0.6\sigma_(8000-3e5K) ~ 20-30km/s), and strong outflows with mass loading factors of up to 10 even for solar neighbourhood conditions. Clustered SNe abet the onset of outflows compared to individual SNe but do not influence the net outflow rate. The outflows do not contain any molecular gas and are mainly composed of atomic hydrogen. The bulk of the outflowing mass is dense (\rho ~ 1e-25-1e-24g/cc) and slow (v ~ 20-40km/s) but there is a high-velocity tail of up to v ~ 500km/s with \rho ~ 1e-28-1e-27g/cc., Comment: 26 pages, MNRAS, accepted

We present a series of numerical simulations that explore how the `X-factor', $X_{CO}$ -- the conversion factor between the observed integrated CO emission and the column density of molecular hydrogen -- varies with the environmental conditions in which a molecular cloud is placed. Our investigation is centred around two environmental conditions in particular: the cosmic ray ionisation rate (CRIR) and the strength of the interstellar radiation field (ISRF). Since both these properties of the interstellar medium have their origins in massive stars, we make the assumption in this paper that both the strength of the ISRF and the CRIR scale linearly with the local star formation rate (SFR). The cloud modelling in this study first involves running numerical simulations that capture the cloud dynamics, as well as the time-dependent chemistry, and ISM heating and cooling. These simulations are then post-processed with a line radiative transfer code to create synthetic 12CO (1-0) emission maps from which $X_{CO}$ can be calculated. We find that for 1e4 solar mass virialised clouds with mean density 100 cm$^{-3}$, $X_{CO}$ is only weakly dependent on the local SFR, varying by a factor of a few over two orders of magnitude in SFR. In contrast, we find that for similar clouds but with masses of 1e5 solar masses, the X-factor will vary by an order of magnitude over the same range in SFR, implying that extra-galactic star formation laws should be viewed with caution. However, for denser ($10^4$ cm$^{-3}$), super-virial clouds such as those found at the centre of the Milky Way, the X-factor is once again independent of the local SFR., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. We use the Arepo moving mesh code to simulate the evolution of molecular clouds exposed to a harsh environment similar to that found in the galactic center (GC), in an effort to understand why the star formation efficiency (SFE) of clouds in this environment is so small. Our simulations include a simplified treatment of time-dependent chemistry and account for the highly non-isothermal nature of the gas and the dust. We model clouds with a total mass of 1.3x10^5 M_{sun} and explore the effects of varying the mean cloud density and the virial parameter, alpha = E_{kin}/|E_{pot}|. We vary the latter from alpha = 0.5 to alpha = 8.0, and so many of the clouds that we simulate are gravitationally unbound. We expose our model clouds to an interstellar radiation field (ISRF) and cosmic ray flux (CRF) that are both a factor of 1000 higher than the values found in the solar neighbourhood. As a reference, we also run simulations with local solar neighbourhood values of the ISRF and the CRF in order to better constrain the effects of the extreme conditions in the GC on the SFE. Despite the harsh environment and the large turbulent velocity dispersions adopted, we find that all of the simulated clouds form stars within less than a gravitational free-fall time. Increasing the virial parameter from alpha = 0.5 to alpha = 8.0 decreases the SFE by a factor ~4-10, while increasing the ISRF/CRF by a factor of 1000 decreases the SFE again by a factor ~2-6. However, even in our most unbound clouds, the SFE remains higher than that inferred for real GC clouds. We therefore conclude that high levels of turbulence and strong external heating are not enough by themselves to lead to a persistently low SFE at the center of the Galaxy., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS (Version 1.1)

It has been shown that the behaviour of primordial gas collapsing in a dark matter minihalo can depend on the adopted choice of 3-body H$_2$ formation rate. The uncertainties in this rate span two orders of magnitude in the current literature, and so it remains a source of uncertainty in our knowledge of population III star formation. Here we investigate how the amount of fragmentation in primordial gas depends on the adopted 3-body rate. We present the results of calculations that follow the chemical and thermal evolution of primordial gas as it collapses in two dark matter minihalos. Our results on the effect of 3-body rate on the evolution until the first protostar forms agree well with previous studies. However, our modified version of GADGET-2 SPH also includes sink particles, which allows us to follow the initial evolution of the accretion disc that builds up on the centre of each halo, and capture the fragmentation in gas as well as its dependence on the adopted 3-body H$_2$ formation rate. We present a new method for estimating the H2 cooling rate in the optically thick regime in simulations of primordial star formation. Our new approach is based on the TreeCol algorithm, which projects matter distributions onto a spherical grid to create maps of column densities for each fluid element in the computational domain. We have improved this algorithm by using the relative gas velocities, to weight the individual matter contributions with the relative spectral line overlaps, in order to properly account for the Doppler effect. We compare our new method to the widely used Sobolev approximation, which yields an estimate for the column density based on the local velocity gradient and the thermal velocity. This approach generally underestimates the photon escape probability, because it neglects the density gradient and the actual shape of the cloud. We present a correction factor for the true line overlap in the Sobolev approximation and a new method based on local quantities, which fits the exact results reasonably well during the collapse of the cloud, with the error in the cooling rates always being less than 10%. Analytical fitting formulae fail at determining the photon escape probability after formation of the first protostar (error of 40%) because they are based on the assumption of spherical symmetry and therefore break down once a protostellar accretion disc has formed. Our method yields lower temperatures and hence promotes fragmentation for densities above 10^{10}/ccm at a distance of 200AU from the first protostar. Since the overall accretion rates are hardly affected by the cooling implementation, we expect Pop III stars to have lower masses in our simulations, compared to the results of previous simulations that used the Sobolev approximation., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted in Astrophysical Journal

Understanding the formation of the first objects in the universe critically depends on knowing whether the properties of small dark matter structures at high-redshift (z > 15) are different from their more massive lower-redshift counterparts. To clarify this point, we performed a high-resolution N-body simulation of a cosmological volume 1 Mpc/h comoving on a side, reaching the highest mass resolution to date in this regime. We make precision measurements of various physical properties that characterize dark matter haloes (such as the virial ratio, spin parameter, shape, and formation times, etc.) for the high-redshift (z > 15) dark matter mini-haloes we find in our simulation, and compare them to literature results and a moderate-resolution comparison run within a cube of side-length 100 Mpc/h. We find that dark matter haloes at high-redshift have a log-normal distribution of the dimensionless spin parameter centered around {\lambda} $\sim$ 0.03, similar to their more massive counterparts. They tend to have a small ratio of the length of the shortest axis to the longest axis (sphericity), and are highly prolate. In fact, haloes of given mass that formed recently are the least spherical, have the highest virial ratios, and have the highest spins. Interestingly, the formation times of our mini-halos depend only very weakly on mass, in contrast to more massive objects. This is expected from the slope of the linear power spectrum of density perturbations at this scale, but despite this difference, dark matter structures at high-redshift share many properties with their much more massive counterparts observed at later times., Comment: 17 pages. Recent statistical analysis of two extragalactic observational surveys strongly indicate a sublinear Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relationship between the star formation rate (Sigsfr) and molecular gas surface density (Sigmol). Here, we consider the consequences of these results in the context of common assumptions, as well as observational support for a linear relationship between Sigsfr and the surface density of dense gas. If the CO traced gas depletion time (tau_mol) is constant, and if CO only traces star forming giant molecular clouds (GMCs), then the physical properties of each GMC must vary, such as the volume densities or star formation rates. Another possibility is that the conversion between CO luminosity and Sigmol, the XCO factor, differs from cloud-to-cloud. A more straightforward explanation is that CO permeates the hierarchical ISM, including the filaments and lower density regions within which GMCs are embedded. A number of independent observational results support this description, with the diffuse gas comprising at least 30% of the total molecular content. The CO bright diffuse gas can explain the sublinear KS relationship, and consequently leads to an increasing tau_mol with Sigmol. If Sigsfr linearly correlates with the dense gas surface density, a sublinear KS relationship indicates that the fraction of diffuse gas fdiff grows with Sigmol. We use detailed numerical simulations of the coupled chemical, thermal and dynamical evolution of the gas in a turbulent molecular cloud to study the usefulness of the [CI] 609 micron and 370 micron fine structure emission lines as tracers of cloud structure. Emission from these lines is observed throughout molecular clouds, and yet the question of what we can learn from them about the physics of the clouds remains largely unexplored. We show that the fact that [CI] emission is widespread within molecular clouds is a simple consequence of the fact that the clouds are dominated by turbulent motions. Turbulence creates large density inhomogeneities, allowing radiation to penetrate deeply into the clouds. As a result, [CI] emitting gas is found throughout the cloud, rather than being concentrated at the edges. We examine how well we can use [CI] emission to trace the structure of the cloud, and show that the integrated intensity of the 609 micron line traces column density accurately over a wide range of visual extinctions. For extinctions greater than a few, [CI] and 13CO both perform well, but [CI] becomes a superior tracer of column densities for visual extinctions A_V <= 3 We have also studied the distribution of [CI] excitation temperatures in the gas, and show that these are typically smaller than the kinetic temperature, indicating that most of the carbon atoms are not in local thermodynamic equilibrium. We discuss how best to determine T_ex from observations of the [CI] lines, and how to use these values to estimate the column density of neutral atomic carbon. We show that even in the best case, we tend to systematically underestimate the atomic carbon content of the gas. Our results suggest that observationally-derived estimates of the atomic carbon content of real GMCs could be in error by as much as a factor of two., Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures. We use the moving mesh code AREPO coupled to a time-dependent chemical network to investigate the formation and destruction of molecular gas in simulated spiral galaxies. This allows us to determine the characteristics of the gas that is not traced by CO emission. Our extremely high resolution AREPO simulations allow us to capture the chemical evolution of the disc, without recourse to a parameterised `clumping factor'. We calculate H2 and CO column densities through our simulated disc galaxies, and estimate the CO emission and CO-H2 conversion factor. We find that in conditions akin to those in the local interstellar medium, around 42% of the total molecular mass should be in CO-dark regions, in reasonable agreement with observational estimates. This fraction is almost insensitive to the CO integrated intensity threshold used to discriminate between CO-bright and CO-dark gas, as long as this threshold is less than 10 K km/s. The CO-dark molecular gas primarily resides in extremely long (>100 pc) filaments that are stretched between spiral arms by galactic shear. Only the centres of these filaments are bright in CO, suggesting that filamentary molecular clouds observed in the Milky Way may only be small parts of much larger structures. The CO-dark molecular gas mainly exists in a partially molecular phase which accounts for a significant fraction of the total disc mass budget. The dark gas fraction is higher in simulations with higher ambient UV fields or lower surface densities, implying that external galaxies with these conditions might have a greater proportion of dark gas., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We review current theories for the origin of the Stellar Initial Mass Function (IMF) with particular focus on the extent to which the IMF can be considered universal across various environments. To place the issue in an observational context, we summarize the techniques used to determine the IMF for different stellar populations, the uncertainties affecting the results, and the evidence for systematic departures from universality under extreme circumstances. We next consider theories for the formation of prestellar cores by turbulent fragmentation and the possible impact of various thermal, hydrodynamic and magneto-hydrodynamic instabilities. We address the conversion of prestellar cores into stars and evaluate the roles played by different processes: competitive accretion, dynamical fragmentation, ejection and starvation, filament fragmentation and filamentary accretion flows, disk formation and fragmentation, critical scales imposed by thermodynamics, and magnetic braking. We present explanations for the characteristic shapes of the Present-Day Prestellar Core Mass Function and the IMF and consider what significance can be attached to their apparent similarity. We present the results of a numerical study designed to address the question of whether there is a column density threshold for star formation within molecular clouds. We have simulated a large number of different clouds, with volume and column densities spanning a wide range of different values, using a state-of-the-art model for the coupled chemical, thermal and dynamical evolution of the gas. We show that star formation is only possible in regions where the mean (area-averaged) column density exceeds $10^{21} \: {\rm cm^{-2}}$. Within the clouds, we also show that there is a good correlation between the mass of gas above a K-band extinction $A_{\rm K} = 0.8$ and the star formation rate (SFR), in agreement with recent observational work. Previously, this relationship has been explained in terms of a correlation between the SFR and the mass in dense gas. However, we find that this correlation is weaker and more time-dependent than that between the SFR and the column density. In support of previous studies, we argue that dust shielding is the key process: the true correlation is one between the SFR and the mass in cold, well-shielded gas, and the latter correlates better with the column density than the volume density., Comment: 21 pages and 12 figures. We estimate the parameters of the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relationship, linking the star formation rate (Sigma_SFR) to the molecular gas surface density (Sigma_mol), in the STING sample of nearby disk galaxies using a hierarchical Bayesian method. This method rigorously treats measurement uncertainties, and provides accurate parameter estimates for both individual galaxies and the entire population. Assuming standard conversion factors to estimate Sigma_SFR and Sigma_mol from the observations, we find that the KS parameters vary between galaxies, indicating that no universal relationship holds for all galaxies. The KS slope of the whole population is 0.76, with the 2sigma range extending from 0.58 to 0.94. These results imply that the molecular gas depletion time is not constant, but varies from galaxy to galaxy, and increases with the molecular gas surface density. Therefore, other galactic properties besides just Sigma_mol affect Sigma_SFR, such as the gas fraction or stellar mass. We present a series of smoothed particle hydrodynamical models of G0.253+0.016 (also known as 'The Brick'), a very dense molecular cloud that lies close to the Galactic Centre. We explore how its gas and dust temperatures react as we vary the strength of both the interstellar radiation field (ISRF) and the cosmic ray ionisation rate (CRIR). As the physical extent of G0.253+0.016 along our line-of-sight is unknown, we consider two possibilities: one in which the longest axis is that measured in the plane of the sky (9.4 pc in length), and one in which it is along the line of sight, in which case we take it to be 17 pc. To recover the observed gas and dust temperatures, we find find that the ISRF must be around 1000 times the solar neighbourhood value, and the CRIR must be roughly 1E-14 /s, regardless of the geometries studied. For such high values of the CRIR, we find that cooling in the cloud's interior is dominated by neutral oxygen, in contrast to standard molecular clouds, which at the same densities are mainly cooled via CO.
