Indigenous Australians, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, are overrepresented amongst patients with cirrhosis. This study documented the nature and extent of supportive care needs of Indigenous Australians with cirrhosis, in comparison with non-Indigenous Australians.Patients and Methods: The supportive care needs of adult patients diagnosed with cirrhosis attending public hospitals in Queensland were assessed through the Supportive Needs Assessment tool for Cirrhosis (SNAC). Patients indicated how much additional help they needed on four subscales: 1. psychosocial issues; 2. practical and physical needs; 3. information needs; and 4. lifestyle changes. We examined the rate of moderate-to-high unmet needs based on Indigenous status (Poisson regression; incidence rate ratio (IRR)).Results: Indigenous (n=20) and non-Indigenous (n=438) patients included in the study had similar sociodemographic and clinical characteristics except for a lower educational level among Indigenous patients (p< 0.01). Most Indigenous patients (85.0%) reported having moderate-to-high unmet needs with at least one item in the SNAC tool. Following adjustment for key sociodemographic and clinical factors, Indigenous patients had a greater rate of moderate-to-high unmet needs overall (IRR=1.5, 95% CI 1.31– 1.72; p< 0.001), and specifically for psychosocial issues (IRR=1.7, 95% CI 1.39– 2.15; p< 0.001), and practical and physical needs subscales (IRR=1.5, 95% CI 1.22– 1.83; p< 0.001), compared to non-Indigenous patients. Conclusion: Indigenous Australians with cirrhosis more frequently had moderate-to-high unmet supportive care needs than non-Indigenous patients. Specific targeting of culturally appropriate supportive care for psychosocial, practical and physical needs may optimize cirrhosis care and improve the quality of life for Indigenous Australians with cirrhosis. Keywords: chronic liver disease, patient reported outcomes, perceived needs, unmet needs, Indigenous Australians

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use is common in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. We examined the impact of alcohol use on direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy outcome and the clinical course of liver disease and 2-year survival for patients receiving HCV DAA therapy. METHODS: Adults (n = 2624) recruited from 26 Australian hospital liver clinics during 2016-2021 were followed up for 2 years. Risky alcohol use was defined by a combination of self-report (≥40 g/day of ethanol), physician-reported history of problematic alcohol use, and anti-craving medication prescription via population-based database linkage. We examined factors associated with advanced liver fibrosis and survival using multivariable logistic and Cox regression. RESULTS: Among 1634 patients (62.3%) with risky alcohol use, 24.6% reported consuming ≥40 g/day of alcohol, 98.3% physician-reported problematic alcohol use; only 4.1% were dispensed naltrexone/acamprosate. One hundred and forty-three patients with cirrhosis reported ≥40 g/day of alcohol, 6 (4.3%) were prescribed naltrexone/acamprosate. Risky alcohol use was associated with advanced fibrosis (adjusted-odds ratio 1.69, 95% confidence interval 1.32-2.17) and patients were over-represented for cirrhosis (45.1% vs. 25.6% in no-risky alcohol use [p < 0.001]) and hepatocellular carcinoma (5.7% vs. 2.5% [p < 0.001]). Sustained viral response (p = 0.319) and 2-year survival (adjusted-hazard ratio 1.98, 95% confidence interval 0.84-4.63) after DAA therapy were not associated with risky alcohol use. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Risky alcohol use in HCV patients was prevalent, but did not reduce HCV cure. Treatment for alcohol dependence was low. Risky alcohol use may be under-recognised in liver clinics. Better integration of addiction medicine into liver services and increased resourcing and addiction medicine training opportunities for hepatologists may help address this.

Items were assessed for ceiling and floor effects, and exploratory factor analysis was used to assess the factor structure. Identified factors were assessed for internal consistency and convergent validity to validated psychosocial tools. Results: Exploratory factor analysis identified 4 factors (39 items), which together accounted for 49.2% of the total variance. The 39-item SNAC met the requirements of a needs assessment tool and identified a range of needs important to patients with cirrhosis that were grouped in four subscales: “Psychosocial issues”, “Practical and physical needs”, “Information needs”, and “Lifestyle changes”. Cronbach’s alpha values for the four subscales ranged from 0.64 to 0.92. Convergent validity was supported by a strong correlation between the total SNAC score and that of the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire (CLDQ; Spearman rho − 0.68; p< 0.001), and moderate correlations with the Distress Thermometer (Spearman rho 0.53; p< 0.001) and seven subscales of a generic health-related quality of life instrument (Short Form 36; Spearman rho ranged from − 0.48 to − 0.57; p< 0.001). The SNAC discriminated patient groups with respect to sex (p=0.013), age group (p< 0.001), and hospital admission status (admitted vs not; p< 0.001).Conclusion: These data provide initial evidence for the validity and reliability of the SNAC, an instrument designed to measure type and amount of perceived unmet practical and psychological needs of people diagnosed with cirrhosis. Keywords: chronic liver disease, perceived needs, instrument validation, psychometric properties

We study the process e+e-→ψ(2S)π+π- with initial-state-radiation events produced at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy collider. The data were recorded with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies at and near the (nS) (n=2,3,4) resonances and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 520fb-1. We investigate the ψ(2S)π+π- mass distribution from 3.95 to 5.95GeV/c2, and measure the center-of-mass energy dependence of the associated e+e-→ψ(2S)π+π- cross section. The mass distribution exhibits evidence of two resonant structures. A fit to the ψ(2S)π+π- mass distribution corresponding to the decay mode ψ(2S)→J/ψπ+π- yields a mass value of 4340±16(stat) ±9(syst)MeV/c2 and a width of 94±32(stat)±13(syst)MeV for the first resonance, and for the second a mass value of 4669±21(stat) ±3(syst)MeV/c2 and a width of 104±48(stat)±10(syst)MeV. In addition, we show the π+π- mass distributions for these resonant regions. © 2014 American Physical Society.

We search for a low-mass scalar CP-odd Higgs boson, A0, produced in the radiative decay of the upsilon resonance and decaying into a τ+τ- pair: Υ(1S)→γA0. The production of Υ(1S) mesons is tagged by Υ(2S) →π+π-Υ(1S) transitions, using a sample of (98.3±0.9)×106 Υ(2S) mesons collected by the BABAR detector. We find no evidence for a Higgs boson in the mass range 3.5≤m A0≤9.2 GeV, and combine these results with our previous search for the tau decays of the light Higgs in radiative Υ(3S) decays, setting limits on the coupling of A0 to the bb̄ quarks in the range 0.09-1.9. Our measurements improve the constraints on the parameters of the next-to-minimal-supersymmetric Standard Model and similar theories with low-mass scalar degrees of freedom. © 2013 American Physical Society.

We describe a measurement of the time-integrated luminosity of the data collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the γ(4S), γ(3S), and γ(2S) resonances and in a continuum region below each resonance. We measure the time-integrated luminosity by counting e+e-→e+e- and (for the γ(4S) only) e+e-→μ+μ- candidate events, allowing additional photons in the final state. We use data-corrected simulation to determine the cross-sections and reconstruction efficiencies for these processes, as well as the major backgrounds. Due to the large cross-sections of e+e-→e+e- and e+e-→μ+μ-, the statistical uncertainties of the measurement are substantially smaller than the systematic uncertainties. The dominant systematic uncertainties are due to observed differences between data and simulation, as well as uncertainties on the cross-sections. For data collected on the γ(3S) and γ(2S) resonances, an additional uncertainty arises due to γ→ e+e-X background. For data collected off the γ resonances, we estimate an additional uncertainty due to time dependent efficiency variations, which can affect the short off-resonance runs. The relative uncertainties on the luminosities of the on-resonance (off-resonance) samples are 0.43% (0.43%) for the γ(4S), 0.58% (0.72%) for the γ(3S), and 0.68% (0.88%) for the γ(2S). © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

We present a search for the decay B+→τ+ν using 467.8×106 BB̄ pairs collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II B-Factory. We select a sample of events with one completely reconstructed B- in the hadronic decay mode (B-→D(*)0X- and B -→J/ψX-). We examine the rest of the event to search for a B+→τ+ν decay. We identify the τ+ lepton in the following modes: τ+→e +νν̄, τ+→μ+νν ̄, τ+→π+ν̄ and τ+→ρ+ν̄. We find an excess of events with respect to the expected background, which excludes the null signal hypothesis at the level of 3.8σ (including systematic uncertainties) and corresponds to a branching fraction value of B(B+→τ +ν)=(1.83-0.49+0.53(stat)±0.24(syst))×10 -4.

We present results for a time-dependent Dalitz plot measurement of CP-violating asymmetries in the mode B0→π+π -π0. The data set is derived from the complete sample of 471×106 BB̄ meson pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory operating on the Υ(4S) resonance. We extract parameters describing the time-dependent B0→ρπ decay probabilities and CP asymmetries, including C=0.016±0.059±0.036, ΔC=0.234±0.061±0.048, S=0.053±0.081±0.034, and ΔS=0.054±0.082±0.039, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We perform a two-dimensional likelihood scan of the direct CP-violation asymmetry parameters for B0→ρ±πâ̂ decays, finding the change in χ2 between the minimum and the origin (corresponding to no direct CP violation) to be Δχ2=6.42. We present information on the CP-violating parameter α in a likelihood scan that incorporates B ±→ρπ measurements. To aid in the interpretation of our results, statistical robustness studies are performed to assess the reliability with which the true values of the physics parameters can be extracted. Significantly, these studies indicate that α cannot be reliably extracted with our current sample size, though the other physics parameters are robustly extracted. © 2013 American Physical Society.

We study the decay B̄0→Λc+p̄π +π-, reconstructing the Λc+ baryon in the pK-π+ mode, using a data sample of 467×106 BB̄ pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage rings at SLAC. We measure branching fractions for decays with intermediate Σc baryons to be B[B̄0→Σ c(2455)++p̄π-]=(21. 3±1.0±1.0±5.5)×10-5, B[B ̄0→Σc(2520)++p̄ π-]=(11.5±1.0±0.5±3.0)×10-5, B[B̄0→Σc(2455)0p̄π+]=(9.1±0.7±0.4±2. 4)×10-5, and B[B̄0→Σ c(2520)0p̄π+]=(2.2±0.7±0. 1±0.6)×10-5, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty on the Λc+→pK -π+ branching fraction, respectively. For decays without Σc(2455) or Σc(2520) resonances, we measure B[B̄0→Λc+p̄π+π -]non-Σc=(79±4±4±20) ×10-5. The total branching fraction is determined to be B[B̄0→Λc+p̄π+π-] total=(123±5±7±32)×10-5. We examine multibody mass combinations in the resonant three-particle Σcp̄π final states and in the four-particle Λc+p̄π+π- final state, and observe different characteristics for the p̄π combination in neutral versus doubly charged Σc decays. © 2013 American Physical Society.

The process e+e-→pp̄γ is studied using 469 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the BABAR detector at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, at an e+e - center-of-mass energy of 10.6 GeV. From the analysis of the pp̄ invariant mass spectrum, the energy dependence of the cross section for e+e-→pp̄ is measured from threshold to 4.5 GeV. The energy dependence of the ratio of electric and magnetic form factors, |GE/GM|, and the asymmetry in the proton angular distribution are measured for pp̄ masses below 3 GeV. The branching fractions for the decays J/ψ→pp̄ and ψ(2S)→pp̄ are also determined. © 2013 American Physical Society.

We report the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa CP-violating angle γ through the combination of various measurements involving B ±→DK±, B±→D *K±, and B±→DK *± decays performed by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e+e- collider at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Using up to 474 million BB̄ pairs, we obtain γ=(69-16+17) modulo 180. The total uncertainty is dominated by the statistical component, with the experimental and amplitude-model systematic uncertainties amounting to ±4. We report a search for CP violation in the decay modes D ±→KS0K±, Ds±→KS0K ±, and Ds±→KS0π± using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 469 fb-1 collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric energy e+e - storage rings. The decay rate CP asymmetries, ACP, are determined to be (+0.13±0.36(stat)±0.25(syst))%, (-0.05±0.23(stat)±0.24(syst))%, and (+0.6±2.0(stat) ±0.3(syst))%, respectively. These measurements are consistent with zero, and also with the Standard Model prediction [(-0.332±0.006)% for the D±→KS0K± and Ds±→KS0K ± modes, and (+0.332±0.006)% for the Ds±→KS0π± mode]. They are the most precise determinations to date. © 2013 American Physical Society.

We report on a search for direct CP violation in the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay D+→K+K -π+ using a data sample of 476 fb-1 of e+e- annihilation data accumulated with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II electron-positron collider, running at and just below the energy of the Υ(4S) resonance. The integrated CP-violating decay rate asymmetry ACP is determined to be (0.37±0.30±0.15)%. Model-independent and model-dependent Dalitz plot analysis techniques are used to search for CP-violating asymmetries in the various intermediate states. We find no evidence for CP-violation asymmetry. © 2013 American Physical Society.

We present improved measurements of CP-violation parameters in the decays B0→π+π-, B0→K+π-, and B0→π0π0, and of the branching fractions for B0→π0π0 and B0→K0π0. The results are obtained with the full data set collected at the Υ(4S) resonance by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, corresponding to (467±5)×106 BB̄ pairs. We find the CP-violation parameter values and branching fractions: Sπ+π-=- 0.68±0.10±0.03, Cπ+π-=-0.25±0.08±0. 02, AK-π+=-0.107±0.016-0.004+0.006, C π0π0=-0.43±0.26±0.05, B(B0→π0π0)=(1. 83±0.21±0.13)×10-6, B(B0→K0π0)=(10. 1±0.6±0.4)×10-6, where in each case, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We observe CP violation with a significance of 6.7 standard deviations for B0→π+π- and 6.1 standard deviations for B0→K+π-, including systematic uncertainties. Constraints on the unitarity triangle angle α are determined from the isospin relations among the B→ππ rates and asymmetries. Considering only the solution preferred by the Standard Model, we find α to be in the range [71, 109] at the 68% confidence level. © 2013 American Physical Society.

We search for di-muon decays of a low-mass Higgs boson (A0) produced in radiative Υ(1S) decays. The Υ(1S) sample is selected by tagging the pion pair in the Υ(2S,3S)→π+π-Υ(1S) transitions, using a data sample of 92.8×106 Υ(2S) and 116.8×106 Υ(3S) events collected by the BABAR detector. We find no evidence for A0 production and set 90% confidence level upper limits on the product branching fraction B(Υ(1S)→γA0) ×B(A0→μ+μ-) in the range of (0.28-9.7)×10-6 for 0.212≤mA0≤9.20 GeV/c2. The results are combined with our previous measurements of Υ(2S,3S) →γA0, A0→μ+μ- to set limits on the effective coupling of the b quark to the A0. © 2013 American Physical Society.

We present a measurement of the B+→ωℓ +ν branching fraction based on a sample of 467 million BB̄ pairs recorded by the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II e+e - collider. We observe 1125±131 signal decays, corresponding to a branching fraction of B(B+→ωℓ+ν)= (1.21±0.14±0.08)×10-4, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The dependence of the decay rate on q2, the invariant mass squared of the leptons, is compared to QCD predictions of the form factors based on a quark model and light-cone sum rules. © 2013 American Physical Society.

We present a measurement of D0-D̄0 mixing and CP violation using the ratio of lifetimes simultaneously extracted from a sample of D0 mesons produced through the flavor-tagged process D*+→D0π+, where D0 decays to Kâπ ±, K-K+, or π -π+, along with the untagged decays D0→K âπ± and D0→K-K +. The lifetimes of the CP-even, Cabibbo-suppressed modes K -K+ and π-π+ are compared to that of the CP-mixed mode Kâπ± in order to measure yCP and ΔY. We obtain yCP=[0.72±0. 18(stat)±0.12(syst)]% and ΔY=[0.09±0.26(stat)±0. 06(syst)]%, where ΔY constrains possible CP violation. The yCP result excludes the null mixing hypothesis at 3.3σ significance. This analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 468 fb-1 collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e - collider. © 2013 American Physical Society.

The photon spectrum in B→Xs γ decay, where X s is any strange hadronic state, is studied using a data sample of (382.8±4.2)×106 e+e-→Υ(4S)→BB events collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II collider. The spectrum is used to measure the branching fraction B(B→Xsγ)=(3. 21±0.15±0.29±0.08)×10-4 and the first, second, and third moments YEγ Ÿ ;=2.267±0. 019±0.032±0.003 GeV, Y(Eγ-YEγ Ÿ) 2Ÿ=0.0484±0.0053±0.0077±0.0005 GeV2, and Y(Eγ-YEγ Ÿ) 3Ÿ=-0.0048±0. 0011±0.0011±0.0004 GeV3, for the range Eγ>1.8 GeV, where Eγ is the photon energy in the B-meson rest frame. Results are also presented for narrower Eγ ranges. In addition, the direct CP asymmetry ACP(B→Xs+dγ) is measured to be 0.057±0.063. The spectrum itself is also unfolded to the B-meson rest frame; that is the frame in which theoretical predictions for its shape are made. © 2012 American Physical Society.

We present a new measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry of B0→D*+D*- decays using (471±5) million BB̄ pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B Factory at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Using the technique of partial reconstruction, we measure the time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters S=-0.34±0.12±0.05 and C=+0.15±0.09±0.04. Using the value for the CP-odd fraction R⊥=0.158±0. 028±0.006, previously measured by BABAR with fully reconstructed B0→D*+D*- events, we extract the CP-even components S+=-0.49±0.18±0.07±0.04 and C +=+0.15±0.09±0.04. In each case, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic; the third uncertainty on S + is the contribution from the uncertainty on R ⊥. The measured value of the CP-even component S+ is consistent with the value of sin2β measured in b→(cc̄)s transitions, and with the Standard Model expectation of small penguin contributions. © 2012 American Physical Society.

We present measurements of the branching fractions of three-prong and five-prong τ decay modes using a sample of 430million τ lepton pairs, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 468fb -1, collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e +e - storage rings at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The τ -→(3π) -ην τ, τ -→(3π) -ων τ, and τ -→π -f 1(1285)ν τ branching fractions are presented, as well as a new limit on the branching fraction of the second-class current decay τ -→π -η ′(958)ν τ. Although CP violation in the B meson system has been well established by the B factories, there has been no direct observation of time-reversal violation. The decays of entangled neutral B mesons into definite flavor states (B(0) or B(0)), and J/ψK(L)(0) or ccK(S)(0) final states (referred to as B(+) or B(-)), allow comparisons between the probabilities of four pairs of T-conjugated transitions, for example, B(0) → B(-) and B(-) → B(0), as a function of the time difference between the two B decays. Using 468 × 10(6) BB pairs produced in Υ(4S) decays collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC, we measure T-violating parameters in the time evolution of neutral B mesons, yielding ΔS(T)(+) = -1.37 ± 0.14(stat) ± 0.06(syst) and ΔS(T)(-) = 1.17 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.11(syst). These nonzero results represent the first direct observation of T violation through the exchange of initial and final states in transitions that can only be connected by a T-symmetry transformation.

We report the measurement of the baryonic B decay B -→Σc++p̄π -π -. Using a data sample of 467×106 BB̄ pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at SLAC, the measured branching fraction is (2.98±0.16 (stat)±0.15 (syst)±0. 77(Λ) c)×10 -4, where the last error is due to the uncertainty in B(Λc+→pK -π +). The data suggest the existence of resonant subchannels B -→Λ c(2595) +p̄π - and, possibly, B -→Σc++Δ ̄-π -. We see unexplained structures in m(Σc++π -π -) at 3.25GeV/c2, 3.8GeV/c2, and 4.2GeV/c2. © 2012 American Physical Society.

We report the results of a study of the exclusive charmless semileptonic decays, B0→π -+ν, B +→π0 +ν, B +→ω +ν, B +→η +ν, and B +→η ′+ν (=e or μ) undertaken with approximately 462×106 BB̄ pairs collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. The analysis uses events in which the signal B decays are reconstructed with a loose neutrino reconstruction technique. We obtain partial branching fractions in several bins of q2, the square of the momentum transferred to the lepton-neutrino pair, for B0→π -+ν, B +→π0 +ν, B +→ω +ν, and B +→η +ν. From these distributions, we extract the form-factor shapes f +(q2) and the total branching fractions B(B0→π -+ν)=(1.45±0.04 stat±0.06 syst)×10 -4 (combined π - and π0 decay channels assuming isospin symmetry), B(B +→ω +ν)=(1.19±0.16 stat±0.09 syst)×10 -4 and B(B +→η +ν)=(0.38±0.05 stat±0.05 syst)×10 -4. We also measure B(B +→η ′+ν)=(0.24±0. 08 stat±0.03 syst)×10 -4. We obtain values for the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element |V ub| by direct comparison with three different QCD calculations in restricted q2 ranges of B→π +ν decays. From a simultaneous fit to the experimental data over the full q2 range and the FNAL/MILC lattice QCD predictions, we obtain |V ub|=(3.25±0.31)×10 -3, where the error is the combined experimental and theoretical uncertainty. © 2012 American Physical Society.

We study the process γγ→J/ψω using a data sample of 519.2fb -1 recorded by the BABAR detector at SLAC at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e +e - collider at center-of-mass energies near the Υ(nS) (n=2,3,4) resonances. We confirm the existence of the charmoniumlike resonance X(3915) decaying to J/ψω with a significance of 7.6 standard deviations, including systematic uncertainties, and measure its mass (3919.4±2.2±1.6)MeV/c2 and width (13±6±3)MeV, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. A spin-parity analysis supports the assignment JP=0 + and therefore the identification of the signal as due to the χ c0(2P) resonance. In this hypothesis we determine the product between the two-photon width and the final state branching fraction to be (52±10±3)eV. © 2012 American Physical Society.

We establish improved upper limits on branching fractions for B0 decays to final states where the decay products are purely invisible (i.e., no observable final state particles) and for final states where the only visible product is a photon. Within the Standard Model, these decays have branching fractions that are below the current experimental sensitivity, but various models of physics beyond the Standard Model predict significant contributions for these channels. Using 471×106 BB̄ pairs collected at the Υ(4S) resonance by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e +e - storage ring at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, we establish upper limits at the 90% confidence level of 2.4×10 -5 for the branching fraction of B0→invisible and 1.7×10 -5 for the branching fraction of B0→invisible+γ. © 2012 American Physical Society.

We use 429fb -1 of e +e - collision data collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector to measure the radiative transition rate of b→sγ with a sum of 38 exclusive final states. The inclusive branching fraction with a minimum photon energy of 1.9 GeV is found to be B(B̄→X sγ)=(3.29±0.19±0. 48)×10 -4 where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also measure the first and second moments of the photon energy spectrum and extract the best-fit values for the heavy-quark parameters, m b and μπ2, in the kinetic and shape function models. © 2012 American Physical Society.

We study the process e +e -→J/ψπ +π - with initial-state-radiation events produced at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy collider. The data were recorded with the BABAR detector at center-of-mass energies 10.58 and 10.54 GeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 454fb -1. We investigate the J/ψπ +π - mass distribution in the region from 3.5 to 5.5GeV/c2. Below 3.7GeV/c2 the ψ(2S) signal dominates, and above 4GeV/c2 there is a significant peak due to the Y(4260). A fit to the data in the range 3.74-5.50GeV/c2 yields a mass value 4245±5(stat)±4(syst)MeV/c2 and a width value 114-15+16(stat) ±7(syst)MeV for this state. We do not confirm the report from the Belle Collaboration of a broad structure at 4.01GeV/c2. In addition, we investigate the π +π - system which results from Y(4260) decay. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Based on the full BABAR data sample, we report improved measurements of the ratios R(D(*))=B(B[over ¯]→D(*)τ(-)ν[over ¯](τ))/B(B[over ¯]→D(*)ℓ(ℓ)(-)ν[over ¯](ℓ)), where ℓ is either e or μ. These ratios are sensitive to new physics contributions in the form of a charged Higgs boson. We measure R(D)=0.440±0.058±0.042 and R(D(*))=0.332±0.024±0.018, which exceed the standard model expectations by 2.0σ and 2.7σ, respectively. Taken together, our results disagree with these expectations at the 3.4σ level. This excess cannot be explained by a charged Higgs boson in the type II two-Higgs-doublet model.

A precise measurement of the cross section of the process e +e -→π +π -(γ) from threshold to an energy of 3GeV is obtained with the initial-state radiation (ISR) method using 232fb -1 of data collected with the BABAR detector at e +e - center-of-mass energies near 10.6GeV. The ISR luminosity is determined from a study of the leptonic process e +e -→μ +μ -(γ) γ ISR, which is found to agree with the next-to-leading-order QED prediction to within 1.1%. The cross section for the process e +e -→π +π -(γ) is obtained with a systematic uncertainty of 0.5% in the dominant ρ resonance region. The leading-order hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly calculated using the measured ππ cross section from threshold to 1.8GeV is (514.1±2.2(stat)±3.1(syst))×10 -10. © 2012 American Physical Society.
