Abstract

Predicting oil recovery efficiency of a deepwater reservoir is a challenging task. One approach to characterize a deepwater reservoir and to predict its producibility is by analyzing its depositional information. This research proposes a deposition-based stratigraphic interpretation framework for deepwater reservoir characterization. In this framework, one critical task is the identification and labeling of the stratigraphic components in the reservoir, according to their depositional environments. This interpretation process is labor intensive and can produce different results depending on the stratigrapher who performs the analysis. To relieve stratigrapher's workload and to produce more consistent results, we have developed a novel methodology to automate this process using various computational intelligence techniques. Using a well log data set, we demonstrate that the developed methodology and the designed workflow can produce finite state transducer models that interpret deepwater reservoir depositional environments adequately.

Abstract

Quantitative analysis of modern submarine channels has permitted a more rigorous classification than has hitherto existed. Channel sinuosity varies with slope gradient, reaching a maximum sinuosity at an optimum gradient. Modern submarine channels may be classified by maximum sinuosity and slope gradient giving high-sinuosity, low-gradient, to low-sinuosity, high-gradient channels. This study highlights similarities between the geometry of submarine meanders and those of large terrestrial rivers. An architectural element analysis scheme is presented in this thesis to enable qualitative comparisons between modern and ancient channels. For submarine channels, using this architectural element scheme, two end-member models are proposed for modern and ancient systems. This thesis examines the classic channel-complex deposits of the Eocene Hecho Group, south-central Pyrenees, Spain, to emphasise the range of channel architectural styles found in a foreland basin. Seven distinct channel types are recognised in this basin, generally representing different levels of erosional and depositional architecture and facies. A variety of modern and ancient submarine channel elements have been studied to show that channel architecture is strongly controlled by the type of channelised flow process. Synthesising data from modern and ancient channels provides some predictions about preferential sites of sand accumulation within channel-levee complexes, e.g., at channel bends associated with flow stripping; channel confluences; point bar deposits; channel benches and terraces; channel thalwegs; and other hitrachannel hydraulic jump sites, such as cross channel growth faults.

Abstract

Stratigraphic cycles preserved in sedimentary successions are controlled by the interaction of tectonics, climate, sediment supply and sea-level variations. Understanding the influence of these drivers on sedimentary systems dynamics is crucial to understand and extract information from sedimentary archives. In the deep marine deposits of the Ainsa foreland basin (lower to middle Eocene, southern central Pyrenees, Spain), the origin of well-preserved cyclicity between channelized sandy submarine fans and hemipelagic deposits remains subject to debate because of the absence of chronostratigraphic constraints on high resolution geochemical proxies. Here, we contrast a combination of newly acquired and legacy geochemical datasets (carbon and oxygen stable isotopes, organic matter content, major and trace elements and the mineralogical composition of bulk hemipelagic sediments) tuned by a new age model to global “target” curves to discuss the possible drivers of the stratigraphic cycles found in the deep marine sediment gravity flow deposits of the Hecho Group. Our new age model is based on magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic datasets acquired on a composite section going from the Banaston system to the distal deposits of the Sobrarbe deltaic complex. Four major polarity zones are identified in the studied succession covering the time span from C21n (lower members of the Banaston system) to C19r (Sobrarbe deltaic complex). Our age model is corroborated by the identification of the nannoplankton zone NP16 in the Guaso system (C20n). Comparison between global carbon isotope curve and local isotope dataset shows some differences, suggesting the preservation of a local isotope signal modulated by eustatism, changes in the environment of deposition and/or restriction in water circulation in the Ainsa basin. Abstract

Three EU-based human geographers argue for the need to contextualize the meaning of the current economic crisis in Europe, pointing to precedents in European history. More specifically, they view Europe (as both a set of practices and ideas) as a product of successive crises that have yielded an unexpectedly resilient structure for the European Union, which retains sufficient flexibility to permit different EU members to adapt their economies to the crisis on their own terms without descending into the disintegrative pull of protectionism. The authors also show how the uneven effects of the economic crisis threaten a renewed east-west divide, and highlight the ongoing relevance of the European Union as a transnational fiscal regime with important implications for EUrope's future.
