Objective: The objectives of this study were to determine the richness, abundance, and diversity of bacteria in stray dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) infested by ticks in Comarca Lagunera, northern Mexico, and to establish their pathogenic and or/zoonotic potential. Materials and Methods: Blood samples from 12 dogs were collected, and their deoxyribonucleic acid was extracted. The V3-V4 region of the 16S ribosomal ribunocleic acid gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed on a MiSeq Illumina platform, and the data were analyzed using quantitative insights into microbial ecology. Results: The operational taxonomic units resulted in 23 phyla, 54 classes, 89 orders, 189 families, 586 genera, and 620 bacterial species; among them, 64 species and/or bacterial genera with pathogenic or zoonotic potential were identified, some of which have been reported in the literature as relevant to public health (Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Brucella spp., Clostridium spp., Corynebacterium affermentants, Cutibacterium spp., Dietzia spp., Ehrlichia canis, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Leptotrichia spp., Mycobacterium spp., Paracoccus spp., and Roseomonas gilardii). Conclusion: This research offers relevant information on the prevalence of tick-borne diseases as well as other potential zoonotic diseases in the blood of stray dogs parasitized by ticks in northern Mexico. New molecular biology and massive NGS techniques may play an important role in the study and documentation of bacterial profiles from animals in close proximity to humans. This study evaluates the impact of thermal load on the weights of Tunisian local kids using 24 models with cubic and quadratic Legendre polynomials, based on daily temperatures (Tmin, Tmax, and Tavg) on the day of weight recording and averaged over 7, 14, and 21 days before weighing. The deviance information criterion (DIC) consistently shows that cubic polynomial models offer a better fit than quadratic models, highlighting their superior accuracy in studying the effects of thermal load on kid weights. The models with the best fit utilized average or maximum temperatures over 14 or 21 days. The patterns of response were similar across the temperature variables and periods, showing a stable weight response at lower temperatures (thermoneutral region) followed by a decline as the temperatures increased. The weight loss was −125 g/°C beyond the moderate heat stress threshold (Tavg21 = 17.7 °C) and −450 g/°C beyond the severe heat stress threshold (Tavg21 = 25.3 °C) for Tavg21. The heat stress thresholds for moderate heat stress (HS1) were 8.6 °C for Tmin14, 27.4 °C for Tmax14, and 18.6 °C for Tavg14; moreover, for acute heat stress (HS2), they were 17.2 °C for Tmin14, 32.4 °C for Tmax14, and 25.5 °C for Tavg14. High variability in individual responses was observed, with differences in the slope of response ranging from 2.0 kg/°C for moderate heat stress to around 3.0 kg/°C for severe heat stress for Tavg. The correlations between the weights under different temperatures were low, indicating that rankings based on weight could change with varying heat conditions. The animals with larger weight levels generally demonstrated better heat tolerance, and those with good heat tolerance under moderate conditions were also likely to have good tolerance under severe conditions.

Abstract As global temperatures continue to rise, shallow coral reef bleaching has become more intense and widespread. Mesophotic coral ecosystems reside in deeper (30–150 m), cooler water and were thought to offer a refuge to shallow-water reefs. Studies now show that mesophotic coral ecosystems instead have limited connectivity with shallow corals but host diverse endemic communities. Given their extensive distribution and high biodiversity, understanding their susceptibility to warming oceans is imperative. In this multidisciplinary study of an atoll in the Chagos Archipelago in the central Indian Ocean, we show evidence of coral bleaching at 90 m, despite the absence of shallow-water bleaching. We also show that the bleaching was associated with sustained thermocline deepening driven by the Indian Ocean Dipole, which might be further enhanced by internal waves whose influence varied at a sub-atoll scale. Our results demonstrate the potential vulnerability of mesophotic coral ecosystems to thermal stress and highlight the need for oceanographic knowledge to predict bleaching susceptibility and heterogeneity.

Objetivo: Evaluar las complicaciones maternas perinatales asociadas al embarazo adolescente en un hospital peruano, 2018. Métodos: Estudio analítico de casos y controles donde participaron 160 puérperas, considerándose como caso a quien presente al menos una complicación perinatal. Se realizó una revisión de la historia clínica, considerándose solo los registros diagnósticos generados en la institución, asimismo, toda persona que presente entre 10 a 19 años fue categorizada como adolescente. Se contó con la aprobación del comité de ética institucional. La asociación fue determinada mediante la prueba Chi cuadrado de Pearson y Regresión Logística, los riesgos fueron evaluados mediante Odds Ratio crudo y ajustado y su respectivo Intervalo de confianza al 95%. Resultados: Entre las adolescentes, gran parte se encuentra en su adolescencia tardía (90.54%), es soltera (74.32%) y ama de casa (93.24%). Las complicaciones maternas con mayor presencia en el grupo de gestantes adolescentes fueron la infección del tracto urinario (ORa:2.46 p=0.072) y la distocia funicular (ORa:3.21; p=0.017); asimismo, la complicación perinatal más recurrente en adolescentes fue el sufrimiento fetal agudo (ORa:2.11; p=0.091). Conclusiones: El embarazo adolescente se presenta como un factor de riesgo para la presencia de infección del tracto urinario, distocia funicular y sufrimiento fetal agudo.

Objetivo: Identificar los factores asociados a preeclampsia en gestantes atendidas en el Hospital Sergio E. Bernales durante el 2019. Material y métodos: Estudio analítico donde participaron 120 gestantes (40 con preeclampsia y 80 sin preeclampsia) donde se buscó evaluar qué factores se asociaban. La presencia de preeclampsia dependió del registro clínico. Se evaluó una análisis bivariado y multivariado mediante regresión logística. Se contó con aprobación del comité de ética institucional. Abstract Background Nelore cattle play a key role in tropical production systems due to their resilience to harsh conditions, such as heat stress and seasonally poor nutrition. Monitoring their genetic diversity is essential to manage the negative impacts of inbreeding. Traditionally, inbreeding and inbreeding depression are assessed by pedigree-based coefficients (F), but recently, genetic markers have been preferred for their precision in capturing the inbreeding level and identifying animals at risk of reduced productive and reproductive performance. Hence, we compared the inbreeding and inbreeding depression for productive and reproductive performance traits in Nelore cattle using different inbreeding coefficient estimation methods from pedigree information (FPed), the genomic relationship matrix (FGRM), runs of homozygosity (FROH) of different lengths (> 1 Mb (genome), between 1 and 2 Mb - FROH 1−2; 2–4 Mb FROH 2−4 or > 8 Mb FROH >8) and excess homozygosity (FSNP). Results The correlation between FPed and FROH was lower when the latter was based on shorter segments (r = 0.15 with FROH 1−2, r = 0.20 with FROH 2−4 and r = 0.28 with FROH 4−8). Meanwhile, the FPed had a moderate correlation with FSNP (r = 0.47) and high correlation with FROH >8 (r = 0.58) and FROH−genome (r = 0.60). The FROH−genome was highly correlated with inbreeding based on FROH>8 (r = 0.93) and FSNP (r = 0.88). The FGRM exhibited a high correlation with FROH−genome (r = 0.55) and FROH >8 (r = 0.51) and a lower correlation with other inbreeding estimators varying from 0.30 for FROH 2−4 to 0.37 for FROH 1−2. Increased levels of inbreeding had a negative impact on the productive and reproductive performance of Nelore cattle. The unfavorable inbreeding effect on productive and reproductive traits ranged from 0.12 to 0.51 for FPed, 0.19–0.59 for FGRM, 0.21–0.58 for FROH−genome, and 0.19–0.54 for FSNP per 1% of inbreeding scaled on the percentage of the mean. When scaling the linear regression coefficients on the standard deviation, the unfavorable inbreeding effect varied from 0.43 to 1.56% for FPed, 0.49–1.97% for FGRM, 0.34–2.2% for FROH−genome, and 0.50–1.62% for FSNP per 1% of inbreeding. The impact of the homozygous segments on reproductive and performance traits varied based on the chromosomes. This shows that specific homozygous chromosome segments can be signs of positive selection due to their beneficial effects on the traits. Conclusions The low correlation observed between FPed and genomic-based inbreeding estimates suggests that the presence of animals with one unknown parent (sire or dam) in the pedigree does not account for ancient inbreeding. The ROH hotspots surround genes related to reproduction, growth, meat quality, and adaptation to environmental stress. Inbreeding depression has adverse effects on productive and reproductive traits in Nelore cattle, particularly on age at puberty in young bulls and heifer calving at 30 months, as well as on scrotal circumference and body weight when scaled on the standard deviation of the trait.

Many efforts are being made to cope with negative consequences of climate change (CC) on livestock. Among them, selective breeding of resilient animals to CC is presented as an opportunity to maintain high levels of performance regardless of variation in weather. In the present work, we proposed a set of breeding strategies to improve weather resilience in dairy goats raised in north-western European Atlantic conditions and dairy sheep raised in Mediterranean conditions while improving production efficiency at the same time. Breeding strategies differed in the selection emphasis placed on resilience traits, ranging from 0 to 40% in the index. Simulations were carried out mimicking real breeding programs including: milk yield, length of productive life, age at first kidding and mastitis incidence in dairy goats and milk, fat and protein yields, and fertility for dairy sheep. Considering the particular climatic conditions in the two regions, the predicted future climate scenarios, and genetic correlations among breeding objectives, resilience was defined as stability to weather changes for dairy goats and as the ability to improve performance under heat stress for dairy sheep. A strategy giving a selection weight of 10 and 20% for goat and sheep resilience, respectively, resulted in the best overall genetic response in terms of both, production and resilience ability. Not considering resilience in breeding programs could lead to a major production loss in future climate scenarios, whereas putting too much emphasis on resilience would result in a limited progress in milk production.

The breeding scheme in the Rubia Gallega cattle population is based upon traits measured in farms and slaughterhouses. In recent years, genomic evaluation has been implemented by using a ssGBLUP (single-step Genomic Best Linear Unbiased Prediction). This procedure can reparameterized to perform ssGWAS (single-step Genome Wide Association Studies) by backsolving the SNP (single nucleotide polymorphisms) effects. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify genomic regions associated with the genetic variability in growth and carcass quality traits. We implemented a ssGBLUP by using a database that included records for Birth Weight (BW-327,350 records-), Weaning Weight (WW-83,818-), Cold Carcass Weight (CCW-91,621-), Fatness (FAT-91,475-) and Conformation (CON-91,609-). The pedigree included 464,373 individuals, 2449 of which were genotyped. After a process of filtering, we ended up using 43,211 SNP markers. We used the GBLUP and SNPBLUP model equivalences to obtain the effects of the SNPs and then calculated the percentage of variance explained by the regions of the genome between 1 Mb. We identified 7 regions of the genome for CCW; 8 regions for BW, WW, FAT and 9 regions for CON, which explained the percentage of variance above 0.5%. Furthermore, a number of the genome regions had pleiotropic effects, located at: BTA1 (131–132 Mb), BTA2 (1–11 Mb), BTA3 (32–33 Mb), BTA6 (36–38 Mb), BTA16 (24–26 Mb), and BTA 21 (56–57 Mb). These regions contain, amongst others, the following candidate genes: NCK1, MSTN, KCNA3, LCORL, NCAPG, and RIN3.

In organisms with sexual reproduction, genetic diversity, and genome evolution are governed by meiotic recombination caused by crossing-over, which is known to vary within the genome. In this study, we propose a simple method to estimate the recombination rate that makes use of the persistency of linkage disequilibrium (LD) phase among closely related populations. The biological material comprised 171 triplets (sire/dam/offspring) from seven populations of autochthonous beef cattle in Spain (Asturiana de los Valles, Avileña-Negra Ibérica, Bruna dels Pirineus, Morucha, Pirenaica, Retinta, and Rubia Gallega), which were genotyped for 777,962 SNPs with the BovineHD BeadChip. After standard quality filtering, we reconstructed the haplotype phases in the parental individuals and calculated the LD by the correlation -r- between each pair of markers that had a genetic distance < 1 Mb. Subsequently, these correlations were used to calculate the persistency of LD phase between each pair of populations along the autosomal genome. Therefore, the distribution of the recombination rate along the genome can be inferred since the effect of the number of generations of divergence should be equivalent throughout the genome. In our study, the recombination rate was highest in the largest chromosomes and at the distal portion of the chromosomes. In addition, the persistency of LD phase was highly heterogeneous throughout the genome, with a ratio of 25.4 times between the estimates of the recombination rates from the genomic regions that had the highest (BTA18-7.1 Mb) and the lowest (BTA12-42.4 Mb) estimates. Finally, an overrepresentation enrichment analysis (ORA) showed differences in the enriched gene ontology (GO) terms between the genes located in the genomic regions with estimates of the recombination rate over (or below) the 95th (or 5th) percentile throughout the autosomal genome.

Agronomic management modifies the soil bacterial communities and may alter the carbon fractions. Here, we identify differences in several chemical and biological soil variables, as well as bacterial composition between organic (Org) and conventional (Conv) agronomic management in pecan (Carya illinoinensis) orchards located in Coahuila, Mexico. The analyzed variables were pH, N, P, K, soil organic matter, organic matter quality, soil organic carbon, C/N ratio, carbon fractions, microbial biomass carbon, easily extractable Glomalin, colony-forming units, CO2 emissions, and the enzyme activity. The DNA of soil bacteria was extracted, amplified (V3-V4 16S rRNA), and sequenced using Illumina. To compare variables between agronomic managements, t tests were used. Sequences were analyzed in QIIME (Quantitative Insights Into Microbial Ecology). A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to observe associations between the ten most abundant phyla and soil variables in both types of agronomic managements. In Org management, variables related to the capture of recalcitrant carbon compounds were significant, and there was a greater diversity of bacterial communities capable of promoting organic carbon sequestration. In Conv management, variables related to the increase in carbon mineralization, as well as the enzymatic activity related to the metabolism of labile compounds, were significant. The CCA suggested a separation between phyla associated with some variables. Agronomic management impacted soil chemical and biological parameters related to carbon dynamics, including bacterial communities associated with carbon sequestration. Further research is still necessary to understand the plasticity of some bacterial communities, as well as the soil–plant dynamics.

Antifungal resistance and virulence properties of Candida albicans are a growing health problem worldwide. To study the expression of virulence and azole resistance genes in 39 clinical strains of C. albicans, we used a model of infection of human vaginal epithelial cells with C. albicans strains isolated from Mexican women with vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). The strains were identified by PCR amplification of the ITS1 and ITS2 regions of rRNA. The detection and expression of virulence genes and azole resistance genes MDR1 and CDR1 were performed using PCR and RT-PCR, respectively. All strains were sensitive to nystatin and 38 (97.4%) and 37 (94.9%) were resistant to ketoconazole and fluconazole, respectively. ALS1, SAP4–SAP6, LIP1, LIP2, LIP4, LIP6, LIP7, LIP9, LIP10, and PLB1-PLB2 were present in all strains; SAP1 was identified in 37 (94.8%) isolates, HWP1 in 35 (89.7%), ALS3 in 14 (35.8%), and CDR1 in 26 (66.6%). In nearly all of the strains, ALS1, HWP1, SAP4–SAP6, LIP1–LIP10, PLB1, and PLB2 were expressed, whereas CDR1 was expressed in 20 (51.3%) and ALS3 in 14 (35.8%). In our in vitro model of infection with C. albicans, the clinical strains showed different expression profiles of virulence genes in association with the azole resistance gene CDR1. The results indicate that the strains that infect Mexican patients suffering from VVC are highly virulent and virtually all are insensitive to azoles.

The recently developed metabolically more stable minigastrin derivative, DOTA-CCK-66, displayed promising preclinical data when labeled either with 68Ga or 177Lu. First positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging using [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-CCK-66 in two patients suffering from medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) displayed a favorable biodistribution profile. Here, we aim to investigate the therapeutic potential of [225Ac]Ac-DOTA-CCK-66 as a targeted α-therapy (TAT) agent in a comparative treatment study of [177Lu]Lu- versus [225Ac]Ac-DOTA-CCK-66.Treatment studies were performed (3 groups, n = 5, AR42J tumor-bearing 394-NOD SCID mice). Control group animals were injected with [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-CCK-66 (1.1 MBq, PET/CT imaging), while treatment group animals received a single dose of either [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-CCK-66 (37 MBq, radioligand therapy (RLT)) or [225Ac]Ac-DOTA-CCK-66 (37 kBq, TAT). All animals' tumor volume and body weight were monitored twice a week until end-point criteria were reached. Blood samples were evaluated (VetScan VS2, Abaxis) once mice were sacrificed.Upon treatment, an initial decline in tumor volume, followed by a significantly delayed tumor growth of treated cohorts, was observed. Mean survival of 177Lu- as well as 225Ac-treated animals was increased by 3- (37 ± 3 d) and 4.5-fold (54 ± 6 d), respectively, when compared to non-treated animals (12 ± 3 d). Blood sample analysis did not indicate toxic side effects to the liver, kidney, or stomach upon 177Lu and 225Ac-treatment.We demonstrated a substantial therapeutic efficacy of 177Lu- and 225Ac-labeled DOTA-CCK-66. As expected, treatment with the latter resulted in the highest mean survival rates. Control group animals were injected with [68Ga]Ga-DOTA-CCK-66 (1.1 MBq, PET/CT imaging), while treatment group animals received a single dose of either [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-CCK-66 (37 MBq, radioligand therapy (RLT)) or [225Ac]Ac-DOTA-CCK-66 (37 kBq, TAT). All animals' tumor volume and body weight were monitored twice a week until end-point criteria were reached. Blood samples were evaluated (VetScan VS2, Abaxis) once mice were sacrificed.Upon treatment, an initial decline in tumor volume, followed by a significantly delayed tumor growth of treated cohorts, was observed. Mean survival of 177Lu- as well as 225Ac-treated animals was increased by 3- (37 ± 3 d) and 4.5-fold (54 ± 6 d), respectively, when compared to non-treated animals (12 ± 3 d). Blood sample analysis did not indicate toxic side effects to the liver, kidney, or stomach upon 177Lu and 225Ac-treatment.We demonstrated a substantial therapeutic efficacy of 177Lu- and 225Ac-labeled DOTA-CCK-66. As expected, treatment with the latter resulted in the highest mean survival rates. These results indicate a high therapeutic potential of 225Ac-labeled DOTA-CCK-66 for TAT in MTC patient management. Objective: The objectives of this study were to determine the richness, abundance, and diversity of bacteria in stray dogs ( Canis lupus familiaris ) infested by ticks in Comarca Lagunera, northern Mexico, and to establish their pathogenic and or/zoonotic potential., Materials and Methods: Blood samples from 12 dogs were collected, and their deoxyribonucleic acid was extracted. The V3-V4 region of the 16S ribosomal ribunocleic acid gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed on a MiSeq Illumina platform, and the data were analyzed using quantitative insights into microbial ecology., Results: The operational taxonomic units resulted in 23 phyla, 54 classes, 89 orders, 189 families, 586 genera, and 620 bacterial species; among them, 64 species and/or bacterial genera with pathogenic or zoonotic potential were identified, some of which have been reported in the literature as relevant to public health ( Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Brucella spp ., Clostridium spp ., Corynebacterium affermentants, Cutibacterium spp ., Dietzia spp ., Ehrlichia canis, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Leptotrichia spp ., Mycobacterium spp ., Paracoccus spp ., and Roseomonas gilardii )., Conclusion: This research offers relevant information on the prevalence of tick-borne diseases as well as other potential zoonotic diseases in the blood of stray dogs parasitized by ticks in northern Mexico. Radiation therapy induces targeted effects in the cells that are irradiated and also non-targeted effects (i.e. bystander effects) in non-irradiated cells that are close to or at short distance (<∼1 mm) from irradiated cells. Bystander effects are mediated by intercellular communications and may result in cytotoxic and genotoxic modifications. Their occurrence and relative contribution to the irradiation outcome are influenced by several parameters among which the particle linear energy transfer seems to be prominent. Bystander effects were first observed after external radiation therapy, but have been described also following targeted radionuclide therapy. Therefore, we propose a method to investigate their occurrence in experimental conditions where cells are exposed to radiopharmaceuticals.
