This chapter aims to highlight the different modes of life-writing which Lucy Hutchinson drew upon in order to construct the exemplarity of her husband. After an overview of early modern exemplarity, it examines her twofold indebtedness to humanist life-writing inherited from Plutarch and to the Protestant tradition of godly lives. By extolling the Colonel as a Renaissance gentleman and a saint, Lucy Hutchinson seeks to persuade the reader to follow his example by emulating his commitment to the public cause. However, such extreme idealization of the Colonel’s virtues, especially in her dedication to her children, borders on idolatry, a sinful attitude that is vigorously condemned by Calvinists. The chapter studies Lucy Hutchinson’s ambivalent treatment of her husband’s virtues and aura as well as the strategies she adopts to describe him as a true Protestant saint.

This chapter surveys early modern historiographical debates before and after the Civil Wars. It brings to the fore a growing ‘culture of facts’, the distrust of rhetoric, and the obsession with historical truth, before turning to the impact of the mid-seventeenth-century crisis on historiographical debates. In those times of conflict, the sense that all truth was divided—and even lost—gave more credit to first-hand testimonies than to more general histories. As is argued in this chapter, Lucy Hutchinson’s experience-based apologetic Memoirs reflect—and respond to—contemporary historiographical debates, thus deserving pride of place among the many testimonies that were written in the wake of the Civil Wars.

This chapter shows that Lucy Hutchinson’s historiographical undertaking cannot be understood outside the epistemology of experience on which the memoir genre is based. It starts by examining her paradoxical position as a witness of the Civil War in Nottingham. Even though she was kept at a distance from military operations, living in the castle of Nottingham and being the Colonel’s confidant put her in a unique position to record the events experienced by her husband and, occasionally, by herself. This privileged position also enabled her to disclose to the reader what was taking place behind the scenes of history, in particular the negotiations conducted between the Colonel and his royalist enemies, as well as the machinations that tore apart the Nottingham Committee of War. The chapter ends with the paradox that Lucy Hutchinson’s local account also serves as a commentary on national politics and provides an exceptional insight into the anthropological realities of the Civil War.

This chapter compares Lucy Hutchinson’s earlier relation of her husband’s role during the Civil War between 1642 and 1645—‘the Notebook’ now kept at the British Library—with the corresponding account in the Memoirs. In the Notebook, Lucy Hutchinson was offering a defence of her husband as a governor of the town and castle of Nottingham; she had not conceived the full project of the Memoirs as a monument to his memory yet. But this does not mean she lacked historiographical and literary ambition. This chapter first charts how, in both narratives, Lucy Hutchinson exploits romance tropes so as to give shape and meaning to the confused realities of the Civil War. Second, it shows how she unremittingly fathoms the treacherous motives of the Colonel’s alleged friends and adversaries during the same period.

The conclusion highlights the superimposition of two views of history in the Memoirs. They first offer a disenchanted, tragic vision of the English Revolution, associated with the defeat of the Good Old Cause and the death of Colonel Hutchinson. But taken as a whole, the Memoirs propose a way out of this tragic perplexity at the time of Puritan defeat. Through the Colonel’s martyrdom, they convey the promise of a godly republic and better times to come for the saints. From this perspective, Lucy Hutchinson’s Memoirs may be construed as a counter-history of the English Revolution capable of challenging official historiography in the Restoration age.

This chapter seeks to articulate Lucy Hutchinson’s use of digressions with her apologetic purpose, namely the rehabilitation of the Colonel’s actions during the Civil War and Interregnum. For the sake of clarity, a typology of digressions is presented. First, the polemical digressions, which explore the long- and short-term causes of the Civil Wars, provide an apt discursive strategy to write about national history. Second, the narrative digressions offer both a synoptic vision of the English Civil War and a defence of tyrannicide. Third, the politico-moral digressions shed light on the persecution of the Colonel in the 1640s and foreshadow his final sufferings and death. The chapter finally argues that providence plays a crucial part in the economy of the Memoirs by allowing the convergence of several narrative lines and the integration of the life of Colonel Hutchinson into a larger eschatological framework.

This chapter concentrates on the final quarter of the Memoirs covering the years 1660–1664 when, as she was stepping out of her own sphere to intervene in Restoration politics, Lucy Hutchinson’s role changed from witness to actor—a highly prized role among early modern memoir-writers. By exploring the connections between Lucy Hutchinson, as agent in history, and Lucy Hutchinson, as the author of the Memoirs, this chapter looks at the ways in which, despite patriarchal prohibitions, she writes herself into history to come to grips with her past. In this autobiographical portion of the Memoirs, Lucy Hutchinson’s search for personal intelligibility proves to be inseparable from her vindication of the Colonel. Simultaneously, her profession of truth becomes more problematic as she ostensibly tinkers with history and memory.

The introduction first places Lucy Hutchinson’s Memoirs of the Life of Colonel Hutchinson in the historiographical context of the Restoration, when memoirs and lives became the chief genres in which history was written. It presents the Memoirs as an important contribution to the historiography of the English Revolution, and as a significant act of remembrance at a time when the restored Stuart monarchy tried to obliterate the seditious memories of the Civil Wars. Lucy Hutchinson’s ability to interweave the narrative of her husband’s life with national history reveals how aware she was of the importance of a historian’s rhetorical and discursive choices. Hence this book’s claim that Lucy Hutchinson’s authority as a historian of the English Revolution can only be fully apprehended if one takes into account her meticulous craft as well as her appropriation of different forms and genres.

This book explores Lucy Hutchinson’s historical writings and more particularly the Memoirs of the Life of Colonel Hutchinson, which were composed between 1664 and 1667 and first published in 1806. The Memoirs were a best-seller in the nineteenth century, but largely fell into oblivion in the twentieth century. They were rediscovered in the late 1980s by historians and literary scholars interested in the emerging culture of republicanism and dissent. By approaching the Memoirs through the prism of history and form, this book challenges the widely-held assumption that early modern women did not—and could not—write the history of wars, a field that was supposedly gendered as masculine. On the contrary, it shows that Lucy Hutchinson, a reader of ancient history and an outstanding Latinist, was a historian of the English Revolution, to be ranked with Richard Baxter, Edmund Ludlow, and Edward Hyde.

This chapter aims to show the scope and limits of Lucy Hutchinson’s anti-Catholic reading of history in her Memoirs of the Life of Colonel Hutchinson composed between 1664 and 1667. Hutchinson starts her relation of the Civil War by analysing its origins through the ideological prism of anti-Catholicism: in her view, Henry VIII’s incomplete Protestant Reformation and the Popish policies of the first Stuarts directly led to the outbreak of the conflict. In her subsequent account of the Civil War and Interregnum, anti-Popery is less explicative: it continues to excite fears, but it fails to provide a comprehensive and rational explanation to the conflict and to the defeat of the good old cause. Hutchinson, however, advances other possible factors which may account for the final rout of the Puritans, among which their division and their moral baseness. In this context, anti-Catholicism gives way to virulent anti-Puritanism: the responsibility for the Civil War, originally ascribed to Papists, is shifted on to the Puritans, whose conduct is presented as equally reprehensible. Thus, Hutchinson’s initial ideological interpretation of events is supplanted by a disillusioned moral reading of history.

This collection of essays looks at the multifaceted issue of anti-Catholicism since the Protestant Reformation in Britain and Ireland. It does not claim to identify with a single historiographical tradition but rather seeks to show the complexity of a phenomenon which spans five hundred years. Thus, by exploring coexistence as well as hatred in Catholic-Protestant relations, and by examining the connection between nationalism and anti-Catholicism as well as bringing new dimensions to the secularisation debate, it claims to bring a fresh wide-ranging perspective on the issue of anti-Catholicism.

This article explores the generic proximity between history and drama in the Interregnum and Restoration histories of the English civil wars. It first looks at the way historians – whether on the king’s or on the Parliament’s side – appropriated the ingredients of tragedy in order to structure their narratives of the regicide and characterize their protagonists. Then, it examines the ambivalent use of theatrical emotion in royalist histories. To be sure, stirring up the passions of the readers was an effective way of persuading them of the justness of the royalist cause, but at the same time this use of pathos stood in contradiction with historical impartiality. It would be unfair, however, to consider such a theatrical presentation of history merely as an instrument of political propaganda; on the contrary, historical narratives could serve a truly tragic vision of history, conferring complexity on an act often related in a Manichean way in the 1650s and at the Restoration. Cet article explore la proximité générique entre histoire et théâtre dans les histoires des guerres civiles anglaises, écrites pendant l’Interrègne et à la Restauration. Il s’intéresse d’abord à lla façon dont les historiens – qu’ils soutiennent la cause du roi ou celle du parlement – s’approprient les ingrédients de la tragédie pour structurer leur récit du régicide et composer leurs personnages. Ensuite, il porte sur l’utilisation ambivalente de l’émotion dans les histoires royalistes de l’exécution de Charles Ier. Certes, l’excitation des passions du lecteur constitue une façon efficace de le faire adhérer à la cause royaliste, mais en même temps ce recours au pathos contredit l’impartialité très souvent revendiquée par les historiens. Il serait injuste, toutefois, de considérer cette présentation théâtrale de l’histoire comme un simple instrument de propagande ; au contraire, certains récits écrits servent une version authentiquement tragique de l’histoire en livrant une version complexe d’un événement souvent relaté de façon manichéenne pendant les années 1650 et à la Restauration.

International audience; On a coutume d'associer l'histoire des femmes à une histoire du temps long 1 , qui privilégie les « actes intemporels » du cycle de vie, l'intime, la continuité des pratiques sociales, culturelles et littéraires 2 , mais qui laisse dans l'ombre le rôle joué par les femmes lors des crises qui ébranlèrent le cours de l'histoire 3. Si ces considérations historiographiques se vérifient en grande partie jusque dans les années 1980, elles sont désormais caduques et contestables, comme le montrent les nombreuses études conduites depuis sur le rôle des femmes pendant la Révolution anglaise, sur leurs écrits ainsi que, plus récemment, sur la crise du genre au milieu du XVII e siècle 4. Pour mieux comprendre l'intérêt d'une telle périodisation, on se propose ici de revenir sur les nombreux travaux qui traitent des femmes et du genre pendant la Révolution anglaise (1640-1660), une période cruciale dans l'histoire britannique. Malgré leurs origines distinctes, l'histoire des femmes et l'histoire du genre sont le plus souvent complémentaires, surtout sous la plume des chercheurs français, en général plus empiriques que leurs homologues anglo-saxons 5. La contribution la plus importante dans ce domaine reste sans nul doute les cinq volumes de l'Histoire des femmes en Occident 6. Cette etude met en evidence l’influence paradoxale de quelques femmes proches du mouvement niveleur sur la vie politique anglaise au milieu du XVIIe siecle. Elle repose sur une etude rhetorique des petitions qu’elles ont envoyees au Parlement en 1649, en 1651 et en 1653, afin d’exiger la liberation de leurs maris emprisonnes. Ce corpus montre leur parfaite connaissance de leurs droits en tant que citoyennes, leur utilisation strategique d’une rhetorique de la compassion afin de faire plier les autorites, ainsi que leur reappropriation de la rhetorique politique et juridique des Niveleurs. Ces petitions feminines invitent a nuancer l’idee que les femmes sont exclues des affaires politiques et incapables de mener une action collective. Bien que leur action sur la scene publique fut limitee—toutes leurs tentatives de faire pression sur le Parlement se solderent par un echec—leur prise de parole en leur nom propre invite a regarder autrement le statut de mineure que leur reservait par ailleurs la societe patriarcale.

This chapter analyses the printed reactions to Thomas Venner's January 1661 insurrection in the City of London that were published within days or weeks of the events. It is proposed that this Fifth-Monarchy rebellion was of paramount importance for the future of dissent in Restoration England but a careful study of the rhetorical war that the opposition waged in the press is still lacking. Particular attention is here given to 1) the type of discourse that was being experimented with to counteract the prophetical writings of future dissenters, 2) the confusion orchestrated by the governement between " Anabaptists " and all religious or political dissenters and 3) the role and representations of the female Fifth Monarchists., Ce chapitre propose une étude de l'ensemble des réactions à l'insurrection du prophète Thomas Venner à Londres, en janvier 1661, qui ont été imprimées dans les jours et les semaines qui suivirent l'événement. On prétend souvent que cette rébellion quinto monarchiste fut d'une importance capitale pour le futur de la dissidence pendant la Restoration anglaise, mais une étude des stratégies mises en place par l'opposition dans la presse n'a jamais été entreprise. Nous nous attachons ici à analyser le discours en réponse aux prétendues prophéties des futurs dissidents, la façon dont le gouvernement a orchestré un confusion entre les " Anabaptistes " et toutes les autres formes de dissidence religieuse et politique et le rôle et les représentations des femmes dans la Cinquième Monarchie.

This study aims to show how the satiric writings of Elizabethan poet John Donne (1572-1631) display a specific aesthetics, which is also to be found in all his work and not only in his satiric texts. Although it has traditionally been considered as a fringe element in Donne's poetry, satire appears in other writings, thus disclosing a ''satiric spirit''. By playing and distancing himself from the literay, social and religious standards of his time, the poet's work reveals an aesthetics ruled by doubt and melancholy. According to the system of medicine called ''humorism'', melancholy is a black fluid that brings us to humour and comedy : even though they have been rarely examined in Donne studies, these concepts do stand out after a close reading of the least sought-after poems. It thus unites and makes the whole of Donne's poetry coherent. Not only is he the best representative of the metaphysical poets, he is also a satirist as well as a humorist.; Cette étude s'attache à démontrer comment les écrits satiriques du poète élisabéthain John Donne (1572-1631) lui permettent de développer une esthétique propre, qui ne se cantonne pas qu'au corpus satirique strict mais trouve également une résonance dans le reste de son œuvre. International audience; Nous tentons de montrer, dans une perspective inspirée par René Girard et Michel Serres, comment, à l’issue d’un procès, le pardon final de Tulle à Horace pour le meurtre de Camille permet le dépassement d’un emballement des conflits mimétiques qui avait débouché sur la guerre civile, et que les procédures traditionnelles de gestion des conflits (en particulier la désignation d’une victime émissaire chargée d’assurer la réconciliation du groupe) n’avait pas permis de résoudre : Horace vainqueur, transformé en machine à tuer, vient porter au coeur de la cité la violence mortifère. En choisissant, par pur calcul politique de type machiavélien, la clémence, Tulle assure la transition entre une société archaïque dont la régulation est fondée sur les rites sacrificiels, à une société moderne, rationnelle et juridique, garant d’un ordre véritable. Un tel changement, qui illustre le moment de crise qui marque le passage entre les restes d’une mentalité féodale, avec les valeurs héroïques qui lui sont associées, et l’absolutisme moderne, dont la raison d’Etat pratiquée par Richelieu est comme l’emblème, n’est pas sans rappeler les démonstrations naguère avancées par Vidal-Naquet et Vernant, qui voyaient également dans la tragédie grecque la mise en scène du passage difficile à penser et à vivre entre une société archaïque et une société « démocratique ». La clémence d’Auguste reprend la problématique de la clémence de Tulle : il s’agit là encore de mettre fin au cycle de la violence mimétique. Mais le pardon de l’empereur est de nature sacrée, contrairement à celui du roi d’Horace : c’est le passage au plan de la transcendance qui garantit seul la possibilité d’une réconciliation, tout en conférant au princeps la légitimité qui lui manquait.

International audience; L'article examine les origines de l'intérêt tant du public que des auteurs français pour la révolution d'Angleterre et la guerre civile au cours du XIXe siècle. Il se propose de dessiner trois périodes: la Révolution française et le directoire, la Restauration et les années 1850-52, suite au coup d'état de 1849. Cet intérêt est alimentée par une question récurrente, à savoir la pertinence du "modèle" anglais et la valeur de prédiction éventuelle que les événements anglais pourrait avoir pour la France.
