We present a combined study of a coronal mass ejection (CME), revealed in a unique orbital configuration that permits the analysis of remote-sensing observations on 27 June 2007 from the twin Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO)-A and -B spacecraft and of its subsequent in situ counterpart outside the ecliptic plane, the interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) observed on 04 July 2007 by Ulysses at 1.5 AU and heliographic-Earth-ecliptic coordinates system (HEE) 33° latitude and 49° longitude. We apply a triangulation method to the STEREO Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) COR2 coronagraph images of the CME, and a self-similar expansion fitting method to STEREO/SECCHI Heliospheric Imager (HI)-B. At Ulysses we observe: a preceding forward shock, followed by a sheath region, a magnetic cloud, a rear forward shock, followed by a compression region due to a succeeding high-speed stream (HSS) interacting with the ICME. From a minimum variance analysis (MVA) and a length-scale analysis we infer that the magnetic cloud at Ulysses, with a duration of 24 h, has a west-north-east configuration, length scale of ≈0.2 AU, and mean expansion speed of 14.2 km s−1. The relatively small size of this ICME is likely to be a result of its interaction with the succeeding HSS. This ICME differs from the previously known over-expanding types observed by Ulysses, in that it straddles a region between the slow and fast solar wind that in itself drives the rear shock. We describe the agreements and limitations of these observations in comparison with 3D magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) heliospheric simulations of the ICME in the context of a complex solar-wind environment.

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) is a nonlinear shear-driven instability that develops at the interfaces between shear flows in plasmas. KHI is ubiquitous in plasmas and has been observed in situ at planetary interfaces and at the boundaries of coronal mass ejections in remote-sensing observations. KHI is also expected to develop at flow shear interfaces in the solar wind, but while it was hypothesized to play an important role in the mixing of plasmas and exciting solar wind fluctuations, its direct observation in the solar wind was still lacking. We report first in-situ observations of ongoing KHI in the solar wind using Solar Orbiter during its cruise phase. The KHI is found in a shear layer in the slow solar wind near the Heliospheric Current Sheet. We find that the observed conditions satisfy the KHI onset criterion from linear theory and the steepening of the shear boundary layer is consistent with the development of KH vortices. We further investigate the solar wind source of this event to understand the conditions that support KH growth. In addition, we set up a local MHD simulation using the empirical values to reproduce the observed KHI. This observed KHI in the solar wind provides robust evidence that shear instability develops in the solar wind, with obvious implications in the driving of solar wind fluctuations and turbulence. The reasons for the lack of previous such measurements are also discussed.

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and their interplanetary counterparts (ICMEs) are key drivers of space weather throughout the heliosphere. Observational studies are used to understand their evolution and for developing existing models and theory in space weather forecasting. Motivated by the future exploration of the solar high-latitudes by Solar Orbiter and complimented by Parker Solar Probe, we aim to contribute to the understanding of high-latitude CMEs as they develop into ICMEs. We examine a high-latitude CME and its subsequent ICME using data from STEREO, Ulysses, and near-Earth spacecraft. We apply a triangulation method to the remote-sensing images from the twin STEREO spacecraft and conduct a multi-spacecraft analysis using the in-situ Ulysses, STEREO, and near-Earth spacecraft data. The Ulysses observations, supported by the other spacecraft, provides a clear picture of the ICME geometry and structure: a shock, followed by a sheath region, and a magnetic flux rope followed by a high-speed stream. This ICME differs from the known ‘over-expanding’ types observed in the high-latitudes by the Ulysses mission, in that it straddles a region between the slow and fast solar winds which in itself drives a shock.

Context.The Kelvin-HeImholtz (KH) instability is a nonlinear shear-driven instability that develops at the interface between shear flows in plasmas. KH waves have been inferred in various astrophysical plasmas, and have been observed in situ at the magnetospheric boundaries of solar-system planets and through remote sensing at the boundaries of coronal mass ejections.Aims.KH waves are also expected to develop at flow shear interfaces in the solar wind. While they were hypothesized to play an important role in the mixing of plasmas and in triggering solar wind fluctuations, their direct and unambiguous observation in the solar wind was still lacking.Methods.We report in situ observations of quasi-periodic magnetic and velocity field variations plausibly associated with KH waves using Solar Orbiter during its cruise phase. They are found in a shear layer in the slow solar wind in the close vicinity of the heliospheric current sheet. An analysis was performed to derive the local configuration of the waves. A 2D magnetohydrodynamics simulation was also set up with approximate empirical values to test the stability of the shear layer. In addition, magnetic spectra of the event were analyzed.Results.We find that the observed conditions satisfy the KH instability onset criterion from the linear theory analysis, and its development is further confirmed by the simulation. The current sheet geometry analyses are found to be consistent with KH wave development, albeit with some limitations likely owing to the complex 3D nature of the event and solar wind propagation. Additionally, we report observations of an ion jet consistent with magnetic reconnection at a compressed current sheet within the KH wave interval. The KH activity is found to excite magnetic and velocity fluctuations with power law scalings that approximately followk−5/3andk−2.8in the inertial and dissipation ranges, respectively. Finally, we discuss reasons for the lack of in situ KH wave detection in past data.Conclusions.These observations provide robust evidence of KH wave development in the solar wind. This sheds new light on the process of shear-driven turbulence as mediated by the KH waves with implications for the driving of solar wind fluctuations.

Four-spacecraft missions are probing the Earth’s magnetospheric environment with high potential for revealing spatial and temporal scales of a variety of in-situ phenomena. Magnetic curvature is intrinsic to curved magnetic fields where the magnetic energy is stored in the form of magnetic tension. In-situ magnetic curvature has been resolved by the four-spacecraft technique called “magnetic curvature analysis” (MCA). We test the MCA on 2.5D MHD simulations of curved magnetic structures induced by Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) waves, with increasing (regular) tetrahedron sizes of virtual spacecraft. We have found variations of the curvature vectors both in radii and orientations depending on the sizes of the tetrahedron. This is helpful to better understand the MCA measures when the technique is applied to in-situ data without knowing the scale sizes of plasma structures under consideration. This study lends support for cross-scale observations to better understand the nature of curvature and its role in plasma phenomena.

Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) and associated magnetic reconnection and diffusion processes provide plasma transport from solar wind into the magnetosphere. The efficiency of this transport depends on the magnetosheath and magnetospheric plasma and field properties at the vicinity of the magnetopause. Our recent statistical study using data from the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms spacecraft indicates that the amplitude of the magnetosheath velocity fluctuations perpendicular to the magnetopause can be substantial. We have performed a series of local macroscale 2.5-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the KHI during strongly northward interplanetary magnetic field and with the initial plasma parameters typical to the dayside magnetopause by perturbing the initial equilibrium with time-dependent perpendicular velocity field fluctuations. The effect of the single-mode and multimode seed spectrums at different frequencies and amplitudes is studied. The plasma transport in Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices is quantified. The results show that when large-amplitude, low-frequency seed velocity fluctuations exist in the magnetosheath, the resulting KH waves grow faster, get larger in size, and can transport more plasma through magnetic boundary, resulting in diffusion coefficient of the order 109 m2/s. The relevance of these findings to the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling is discussed.

[1] For conditions observed in the low corona, we perform 2.5-D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) at the surface of a coronal mass ejection (CME). We match the observed time development of the KHI with simulated growth from 110 MHD experiments representing a parametric range of realistic magnetic field strengths and orientations and two key values of the velocity shear, ΔV, inferred from observations. The results are field strengths Be≈ 8–9 G and Bs≈ 10–11 G in the CME reconnection outflow layer and the surrounding sheath, respectively, for ΔV≈770kms−1; for nearly perpendicular orientation (1° tilt) of Bs with respect to the flow plane, Be can be tilted between 3 and 10°; tilting Bs up to 15° would slow the growth of the KHI by too much. Our simulations also reveal hidden dynamics and structure of the CME ejecta layer such as plasma mixing via reconnection in the vortices.

[1] Previous works have emphasized the significant influence of the solar wind Alfven Mach number (MA) on magnetospheric dynamics. Here we report statistical, observational results that pertain to changes in the magnetosheath flow distribution and magnetopause shape as a function of solar wind MA and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) clock angle orientation. We use all Cluster 1 data in the magnetosheath during the period 2001–2010, using an appropriate spatial superposition procedure, to produce magnetosheath flow distributions as a function of location in the magnetosheath relative to the IMF and other parameters. The results demonstrate that enhanced flows in the magnetosheath are expected at locations quasi-perpendicular to the IMF direction in the plane perpendicular to the Sun-Earth line; in other words, for the special case of a northward IMF, enhanced flows are observed on the dawn and dusk flanks of the magnetosphere, while much lower flows are observed above the poles. The largest flows are adjacent to the magnetopause. Using appropriate magnetopause crossing lists (for both high and low MA), we also investigate the changes in magnetopause shape as a function of solar wind MA and IMF orientation. Comparing observed magnetopause crossings with predicted positions from an axisymmetric semi-empirical model, we statistically show that the magnetopause is generally circular during high MA, while is it elongated (albeit with moderate statistical significance) along the direction of the IMF during low MA. These findings are consistent with enhanced magnetic forces that prevail in the magnetosheath during low MA. The component of the magnetic forces parallel to the magnetopause produces the enhanced flows along and adjacent to the magnetopause, while the component normal to the magnetopause exerts an asymmetric pressure on the magnetopause that deforms it into an elongated shape.

Recent spectral observations of upward moving quasi-periodic intensity perturbations in solar coronal structures have shown evidence of periodic line asymmetries near their footpoints. These observations challenge the established interpretation of the intensity perturbations in terms of propagating slow magnetoacoustic waves. We show that slow waves inherently have a bias toward enhancement of emission in the blue wing of the emission line due to in-phase behavior of velocity and density perturbations. We demonstrate that slow waves cause line asymmetries when the emission line is averaged over an oscillation period or when a quasi-static plasma component in the line of sight is included. Therefore, we conclude that slow magnetoacoustic waves remain a valid explanation for the observed quasi-periodic intensity perturbations. © 2010. The American Astronomical Society. The discovery that p-mode frequencies of low degree do not follow changes of solar surface activity during the recent solar minimum offers the possibility of a new diagnostic signature of the responsible pressure perturbation in the wave guiding medium, potentially rich of information regarding the structure of the Sun and the cause of the unusually long solar minimum. Magnetic fields, as well as temperature changes, introduce equilibrium pressure deviations that modify the resonant frequencies of p-mode oscillations. Assuming the perturbation to be caused by a horizontal layer of magnetic field located in a plane-stratified model of the Sun, we compile analytical frequency shifts and process them to allow direct comparison with observations. The effect of magnetism itself on the central p-mode frequencies can be neglected in comparison with the thermal effect of a perturbative layer buried in the solar interior. A parametric study shows that a layer as thin as 2100 km at subsurface depths is able to reproduce reported mean anomalous frequency shifts (not correlated with the surface activity), while a layer of size around 4200 km increasing by a small amount at depths near 0.08 R-circle dot can explain individual low-degree shifts. It is also possible to obtain the mean shifts via the upward motion through depths near 0.03 R-circle dot of a rising perturbative layer of thickness around 7000 km. Hence, the anomalous frequency shifts are best explained by thermal effects in the upper regions of the convection zone. The effects of latitudinal distribution are not treated here.

Multiple current sheet crossings are ubiquitous features of the solar wind associated with high-beta plasma sheets, notably during the passage of the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). As the HCS is being convected past near-Earth, we attempt to resolve spatial scales and temporal variations of the apparent layered structure of the HCS, including adjacent large scale field reversals. We use several spacecraft for good spatial and cross-scale coverage, spanning 550 R-E across and 900 R-E along the Sun -aEuro parts per thousand Earth line: STEREO, ACE and Cluster. The multi-spacecraft magnetic and plasma observations within the leading edge of the sector boundary are consistent with i) a broad multi-layered structure; ii) occasional non-planar structures and Alfv,nic fluctuations; iii) various stages of transient outflowing loops formed by interchange reconnection. By comparison of the observations at each spacecraft, we obtain a synthesis of the evolution between the patterns of loops, and hence of the transient outflow evolution along the sector boundary. In particular, we present circumstantial evidence that a heat flux dropout, traditionally signalling disconnection, can arise from interchange reconnection and scattering. Moreover, the inter-spacecraft comparison eliminates ambiguities between interpretations of electron counterstreaming. Overall, the sector boundary layer remains, locally, a steady structure as it is convected in the solar wind across a radial heliospheric distance of 560 -aEuro parts per thousand 580 R-E. However, non-planar structures on the Cluster spatial scale, as well as the variations in angular changes and transition durations on the broader scale, indicate that we are not following the evolution of single loops but more likely a bunch of loops with variable properties.

We investigate whether or not ultra-long-period oscillations in EUV filaments can be related to their eruption. We report new observations of long-period (similar to 10-30 hr) oscillatory motions in an apparently quiescent filament, as it crosses the solar disk in a 12 minute cadence SOHO/Extreme-Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) 195 angstrom uninterrupted data set. This data set is chosen to explore characteristics of the filament oscillations depending on its eruptive behavior, which is observed while the filament is still on the disk. The periods are found to increase in a near-stable regime prior to eruption. For the two sequences reported so far, we compare and link the EUV filament oscillations with pulsations in full-disk solar EUV irradiance from SOHO/ CELIAS/SEM 304 parallel to flux measurements. In intervals with stationary periods, we find that the 304 parallel to pulsations and the 195 parallel to filament oscillations have similar periodicities, but are phase-shifted by about a quarter of period. The two-wavelength correlation serves to show that, when the filament is the dominant dynamical feature but can no longer be tracked on the disk, the full-disk irradiance may provide a mean to identify the period increase prior to the filament eruption. We use the periods thus obtained to estimate the height increase of filaments' suspending coronal magnetic field lines, based on a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave interpretation of the oscillations. The results are consistent with changes in prominence heights detected off-limb and thus support the seismological tool employed. Other interpretations connected with thermal overstability or MHD piston effect are possible. These theoretical predictions however do not explain the quarter-period shift between the two EUV-wavelength signals. In any case, the detected variations may provide a powerful diagnostic tool for the forecasting of prominence eruptions.

The first analysis of a transverse loop oscillation observed by both Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatories (STEREO) spacecraft is presented, for an event on the 2007 June 27 as seen by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUVI). The three-dimensional loop geometry is determined using a three-dimensional reconstruction with a semicircular loop model, which allows for an accurate measurement of the loop length. The plane of wave polarization is found from comparison with a simulated loop model and shows that the oscillation is a fundamental horizontally polarized fast magnetoacoustic kink mode. The oscillation is characterized using an automated method and the results from both spacecraft are found to match closely. The oscillation period is 630 {+-} 30 s and the damping time is 1000 {+-} 300 s. Also, clear intensity variations associated with the transverse loop oscillations are reported for the first time. They are shown to be caused by the effect of line-of-sight integration. The Alfven speed and coronal magnetic field derived using coronal seismology are discussed. This study shows that EUVI/STEREO observations achieve an adequate accuracy for studying long-period, large-amplitude transverse loop oscillations.

Aims. Using a model of vertically polarised fast magnetoacoustic waves in curved coronal loops, the method of coronal seismology is applied to observations of transverse loop oscillations.\ud Methods. A coronal loop is modeled as a curved magnetic slab in the zero plasma-β limit. For an arbitrary piece-wise continuous power law equilibrium density profile, the dispersion relation governing linear vertically polarised fast magnetoacoustic kink waves is derived. The ways in which this model can be used for coronal seismology are explored and applied to two observational examples.\ud Results. The Alfvén speed and equilibrium density profile are determined from observations. It is shown that the mechanism of lateral leakage of fast magnetoacoustic kink oscillations described in this model is efficient. In fact, the damping is so efficient that in order to match predicted values with observational ones, either the loop needs to be highly contrasted or the transverse Alfvén speed profile needs to be close to linear. Possible improvements to make the modeling of lateral wave leakage in loops more realistic, allowing a lower damping efficiency, are discussed.

We propose a new model for quasi-periodic modulation of solar and stellar flaring emission. Fast magnetoacoustic oscillations of a non-flaring loop can interact with a nearby flaring active region. This interaction occurs when part of the oscillation situated outside the loop reaches the regions of steep gradients in magnetic field within an active region and produces periodic variations of electric\ud current density. The modulation depth of these variations is a few orders of magnitude greater than the amplitude of the driving oscillation. The variations of the current can induce current-driven plasma micro-instabilities and thus anomalous resistivity. This can periodically trigger magnetic reconnection, and hence acceleration of charged particles, producing quasi-periodic pulsations of X-ray,\ud optical and radio emission at the arcade footpoints.

We present methods to detect automatically off-limb prominences in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV), using synoptic images taken by the extreme-ultraviolet imaging telescope (EIT) on board SOHO. The 304 A line is essential for the detection of EUV prominences, but the optimal detection is achieved through a combined image processing of the four synoptic EIT images. In addition, the difference between consecutive 304 A images serves to identify erupted prominences. Representation maps of the quiescent EUV prominences for a given Carrington rotation are generated and used for further analysis of the detected structures. Longitudinal profiles of long-lived prominences are investigated for three examples at different latitudes, in conjunction with on-disk intensity profiles in the EUV. The observations coincide with theoretically predicted apparent longitudinal profiles, which can be distinguished from the profile of a prominence rising before eruption. The developed algorithms may be relevant to study the 3D geometry of features seen in the EUV and may facilitate the analysis of data from the future STEREO mission.

A study of vertically polarised fast magnetoacoustic waves in a curved coronal loop is presented. The loop is modeled as a semi-circular magnetic slab in the zero plasma-β limit. The governing equations for linear waves are derived. We show that the wave mode behaviour depends on the slope of the equilibrium density profile, which is modeled as a piece-wise continuous power law curve of index α. For all profiles, except for α = −4, wave modes are not trapped in the loop and leak out into the external medium through wave tunneling. The particular case of α = −4, which corresponds to a linearly increasing Alfvén speed profile, is examined in more detail as this is the only model that can support trapped wave modes. We compare the results with a straight slab model and find similar behaviour. Coupling between sausage and kink wave modes has not been found in the model.\ud

Buried magnetic fields at the base of the convection zone and in the anchoring zones of sunspots are presumed to vary over the solar activity cycle. Their effect on p -mode oscillations is explored in detail, through theoretical modelling. The helioseismic signature from a “tachocline” or “shallow” horizontal layer of magnetic field, buried in a plane-stratified model of the Sun, is explored by examining frequency shifts of various order and degree. p -modes propagating perpendicular to the magnetic field lines are found to yield the largest frequency shifts. However, frequency shifts due to buried magnetic fields are considerably smaller than observationally determined shifts over the solar cycle. Nonetheless, an analytical approach to the problem provides useful insight for solar and stellar applications.

Several recent studies suggest that magnetic reconnection is able to erode ubstantial amounts of the outer magnetic flux of interplanetary magnetic clouds (MCs) as they propagate in the heliosphere. We quantify and provide a broader context to this process, starting from 263 tabulated interplanetary coronal mass ejections, including MCs, observed over a time period covering 17 years and at a distance of 1 AU from the Sun with Wind (1995–2008) and the two STEREO (2009–2012) spacecraft. Based on several quality factors, including careful determination of the MC boundaries and main magnetic flux rope axes, an analysis of the azimuthal flux imbalance expected from erosion by magnetic reconnection was performed on a subset of 50 MCs. The results suggest that MCs may be eroded at the front or at rear and in similar proportions, with a significant average erosion of about 40% of the total azimuthal magnetic flux. We also searched for in situ signatures of magnetic reconnection causing erosion at the front and rear boundaries of these MCs. Nearly ~30% of the selected MC boundaries show reconnection signatures. Given that observations were acquired only at 1 AU and that MCs are large-scale structures, this finding is also consistent with the idea that erosion is a common process. Finally, we studied potential correlations between the amount of eroded azimuthal magnetic flux and various parameters such as local magnetic shear, Alfvén speed, and leading and trailing ambient solar wind speeds. However, no significant correlations were found, suggesting that the locally observed parameters at 1 AU are not likely to be representative of the conditions that prevailed during the erosion which occurred during propagation from the Sun to 1 AU. Two transversely oscillating coronal loops are investigated in detail during a flare on the 2011 September 6 using data from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamics Observatory. We compare two independent methods to determine the Alfvén speed inside these loops. Through the period of oscillation and loop length, information about the Alfvén speed inside each loop is deduced seismologically. This is compared with the Alfvén speed profiles deduced from magnetic extrapolation and spectral methods using AIA bandpass. We find that for both loops the two methods are consistent. Also, we find that the average Alfvén speed based on loop travel time is not necessarily a good measure to compare with the seismological result, which explains earlier reported discrepancies. Instead, the effect of density and magnetic stratification on the wave mode has to be taken into account. We discuss the implications of combining seismological, extrapolation, and spectral methods in deducing the physical properties of coronal loops. © 2013. The American Astronomical Society. We analyze flare-associated transverse oscillations in a quiescent solar prominence on 8-9 September, 2010. Both the flaring active region and the prominence were located near the West limb, with a favorable configuration and viewing angle. The fulldisk extreme ultraviolet (EUV) images of the Sun obtained with high spatial and temporal resolution by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) aboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory, show flare-associated lateral oscillations of the prominence sheet. The STEREO-A spacecraft, 81.5 degrees ahead of the Sun-Earth line, provides on-disk view of the flare-associated coronal disturbances. We derive the temporal profile of the lateral displacement of the prominence sheet by using the image cross-correlation technique. The displacement curve was de-trended and the residual oscillatory pattern was derived. We fit these oscillations with a damped cosine function with a variable period and find that the period is increasing. The initial oscillation period (P0) is 28.2 minutes and the damping time (t_D) of 44 minutes. We confirm the presence of fast and slow EUV wave components. Using STEREO-A observations we derive a propagation speed of 250 km/s for the slow EUV wave by applying time-slice technique to the running difference images. We propose that the prominence oscillations are excited by the fast EUV wave while the increase in oscillation period of the prominence is an apparent effect, related to a phase change due to the slow EUV wave acting as a secondary trigger. During propagation, Magnetic Clouds (MC) interact with their environment and, in particular, may reconnect with the solar wind around it, eroding away part of its initial magnetic flux. Here we quantitatively analyze such an interaction using combined, multipoint observations of the same MC flux rope by STEREO A, B, ACE, WIND and THEMIS on November 19-20, 2007. Observation of azimuthal magnetic flux imbalance inside a MC flux rope has been argued to stem from erosion due to magnetic reconnection at its front boundary. The present study adds to such analysis a large set of signatures expected from this erosion process. (1) Comparison of azimuthal flux imbalance for the same MC at widely separated points precludes the crossing of the MC leg as a source of bias in flux imbalance estimates. (2) The use of different methods, associated errors and parametric analyses show that only an unexpectedly large error in MC axis orientation could explain the azimuthal flux imbalance. (3) Reconnection signatures are observed at the MC front at all spacecraft, consistent with an ongoing erosion process. (4) Signatures in suprathermal electrons suggest that the trailing part of the MC has a different large-scale magnetic topology, as expected. The azimuthal magnetic flux erosion estimated at ACE and STEREO A corresponds respectively to 44% and 49% of the inferred initial azimuthal magnetic flux before MC erosion upon propagation. The corresponding average reconnection rate during transit is estimated to be in the range 0.12-0.22 mV/m, suggesting most of the erosion occurs in the inner parts of the heliosphere. We focus on Hinode Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) calcium II H-line observations of a solar quiescent prominence (QP) that exhibits highly variable dynamics suggestive of turbulence. These images capture a sufficient range of scales spatially ($\sim$0.1-100 arc seconds) and temporally ($\sim$16.8 s - 4.5 hrs) to allow the application of statistical methods used to quantify finite range fluid turbulence. We present the first such application of these techniques to the spatial intensity field of a long lived solar prominence. Fully evolved inertial range turbulence in an infinite medium exhibits multifractal \emph{scale invariance} in the statistics of its fluctuations, seen as power law power spectra and as scaling of the higher order moments (structure functions) of fluctuations which have non-Gaussian statistics; fluctuations $\delta I(r,L)=I(r+L)-I(r)$ on length scale $L$ along a given direction in observed spatial field $I$ have moments that scale as $\sim L^{\zeta(p)}$. For turbulence in a system that is of finite size, or that is not fully developed, one anticipates a generalized scale invariance or extended self-similarity (ESS) $\sim G(L)^{\zeta(p)}$. For these QP intensity measurements we find scaling in the power spectra and ESS. We find that the fluctuation statistics are non-Gaussian and we use ESS to obtain ratios of the scaling exponents $\zeta(p)$: these are consistent with a multifractal field and show distinct values for directions longitudinal and transverse to the bulk (driving) flow. Thus, the intensity fluctuations of the QP exhibit statistical properties consistent with an underling turbulent flow.

Variations in the solar wind are responsible of reconfiguration of the whole magnetosphere. The plasmapause is located in the inner magnetosphere and a direct link between its characteristics and the magnetic activity has been shown. NTC is believed to be emitted at the plasmapause and near the magnetic equator. The changes of the plasmapause due to solar wind variations may be reflected in the wave signature. Using three years of Cluster data we perform a statistical study. We show that their observation is linked with a compression of the plasmapause, and an increasing of the magnetic indices.

Nonthermal continuum (NTC) radiation is believed to be emitted at the plasmapause and near the magnetic equator. We present a particular type of NTC radiation, referred to as NTC patch, which appears over a wide frequency range and within a relatively short time interval. NTC patches are observed in all magnetospheric plasma environments of the Cluster 2 orbit and are shown to represent a quarter of the NTC events observed in 2003. A statistical analysis of the frequency pattern performed on the 2003 Cluster 2 Waves of High frequency and Sounder for Probing of Electron Density by Relaxation data indicates that the NTC patches can be divided into two classes: Those with banded emission in frequency are only observed close to the source region and are thus termed "plasmaspheric," while the others, nonbanded, are termed "outer magnetospheric." In an event on 26 September 2003, we localize the sources positions and study the expected propagation of each NTC frequency beam of a plasmaspheric patch. From the observations, we show that the sources are located very close to the satellite and to each other at positions projected on the XY GSE plane. Using a ray tracing code, we demonstrate that, close to the source regions, the satellite observes all frequency rays at the same time which overlap in the spectrogram making up the plasmaspheric patch. After the satellite crossing, the rays follow diverging paths and cannot therefore be observed further out by the same satellite simultaneously. Plasmaspheric patches are thus specific signatures of close and distorted source regions.

We review the current understanding of the dynamics of the Earth’s magnetopause and boundary layers. We describe basic insights and recent advances concerning the main mechanisms that mediate solar wind energy, momentum and plasma transfer into the magnetosphere: magnetic reconnection, the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability and diffusive processes. We also present more global aspects of magnetopause and boundary layer dynamics, focusing specifically on recent studies of global solar wind–magnetosphere coupling and on solar wind plasma pathways to the magnetotail.

Electromagnetic (radio, visible-light, UV, EUV, X-ray and gamma-ray) emission generated by solar and stellar flares often contains pronounced quasi-periodic pulsations (QPP). Physical mechanisms responsible for the generation of long-period QPP (with the periods longer than one second) are likely to be associated with MHD processes. The observed modulation depths, periods and anharmonicity of QPP suggest that they can be linked with some kind of MHD auto-oscillations, e.g. an oscillatory regime of magnetic reconnection. Such regimes, of both spontaneous and induced nature, have been observed in resistive-MHD numerical simulations. The oscillations are essentially nonlinear and non-stationary. Observations of surface waves on the magnetopause indicate a wide range of phase velocities and wavelengths. Their multispacecraft analysis allows a more precise determination of wave characteristics than ever before and reveal shortcomings of approximations to the phase speed that take a predetermined fraction of the magnetosheath speed or the average flow velocity in the boundary layer. We show that time lags between two or more spacecraft can give a qualitative upper estimate, and we confirm the unreliability of flow approximations often used by analyzing a few cases. Using two‐point distant magnetic field observations and spectral analysis of the tailward magnetic field component, we propose an alternative method to estimate the wavelength and phase speed at a single spacecraft from a statistical fit to the data at the other site.

We present a study of transverse loop oscillations in a large coronal loop arcade, using observations from the Transition Region And Coronal Explorer (TRACE) and Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT). For the first time we reveal the presence of long-period transverse oscillations with periods between 24 minutes and 3 hr. One loop bundle, 690 Mm long and with an oscillation period of 40 minutes, is analyzed in detail and its oscillation characteristics are determined in an automated manner. The oscillation quality factor is similar to what has been found earlier for oscillations in much shorter loops. This indicates that the damping mechanism of transverse loop oscillations is independent of loop length or period. The displacement profile along the whole length of the oscillating loop is determined for the first time and consistently between TRACE and EIT. By comparing the observed profile with models of the three-dimensional geometry of the equilibrium and perturbed loop, we test the effect of longitudinal structuring (spatial seismology) and find that the observations cannot unambiguously distinguish between structuring and non-planarity of the equilibrium loop. Associated intensity variations with a similar periodicity are explained in terms of variations in the line-of-sight column depth. Also, we report intensity oscillations at the loop footpoint, which are in anti-phase with respect to the intensity oscillations in the loop body. Previous work has shown that solar wind suprathermal electrons can display a number of features in terms of their anisotropy. Of importance is the occurrence of counter-streaming electron patterns, i.e., with "beams" both parallel and anti-parallel to the local magnetic field, which is believed to shed light on the heliospheric magnetic field topology. In the present study, we use STEREO data to obtain the statistical properties of counter-streaming suprathermal electrons (CSEs) in the vicinity of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) during the period March–December 2007. Because this period corresponds to a minimum of solar activity, the results are unrelated to the sampling of large-scale coronal mass ejections, which can lead to CSE owing to their closed magnetic field topology. The present study statistically confirms that CSEs are primarily the result of suprathermal electron leakage from the compressed CIR into the upstream regions with the combined occurrence of halo depletion at 90° pitch angle. The occurrence rate of CSE is found to be about 15–20% on average during the period analyzed (depending on the criteria used), but superposed epoch analysis demonstrates that CSEs are preferentially observed both before and after the passage of the stream interface (with peak occurrence rate >35% in the trailing high speed stream), as well as both inside and outside CIRs. The results quantitatively show that CSEs are common in the solar wind during solar minimum, but yet they suggest that such distributions would be much more common if pitch angle scattering were absent. We further argue that (1) the formation of shocks contributes to the occurrence of enhanced counter-streaming sunward-directed fluxes, but does not appear to be a necessary condition, and (2) that the presence of small-scale transients with closed-field topologies likely also contributes to the occurrence of counter-streaming patterns, but only in the slow solar wind prior to CIRs.

International audience; Long-period quasi-periodic pulsations (QPPs) of solar flares are a class apart from shorter period events. By involving an external resonator, the mechanism they call upon differs from traditional QPP models, but has wider applications. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of spatially resolved QPPs, with periods around 10 minutes, observed in the X-ray spectrum primarily at energies between 3 and 25 keV. Complementary observations obtained in Halpha and radio emission in the kHz to GHz frequency range, together with an analysis of the X-ray plasma properties provide a comprehensive picture that is consistent with a dense flaring loop subject to periodic energization and thermalization. The QPPs obtained in Halpha and type III radio bursts, with similar periods as the QPPs in soft X-rays, have the longest periods ever reported for those types of data sets. We also report 1-2 GHz radio emission, concurrent with but unrestricted to the QPP time intervals, which is multi-structured at regularly separated narrowband frequencies and modulated with ~18 minute periods. This radio emission can be attributed to the presence of multiple "quiet" large-scale loops in the background corona. Large scale but shorter inner loops below may act as preferential resonators for the QPPs. The observations support interpretations consistent with both inner and outer loops subject to fast kink magnetohydrodynamic waves. Finally, X-ray imaging indicates the presence of double coronal sources in the flaring sites, which could be the particular signatures of the magnetically linked inner loops. We discuss the preferential conditions and the driving mechanisms causing the repeated flaring.

Nonthermal continuum (NTC) radiation is believed to be emitted by the conversion of an electrostatic wave into an electromagnetic one, which takes place at the Earth's magnetic equator. It is generally accepted that the frequency of the electrostatic wave at the source meets a local characteristic frequency placed in between two multiples of the electron cyclotron frequency, fce, which results in emission of a narrow band frequency element. In an event on 14 August 2003, we compare oscillations of the central frequency of distinct NTC frequency elements observed from Cluster orbiting near perigee, with simultaneous Pc5 Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) pulsations in the magnetic field observed from the same platform. The latter magnetic perturbations are interpreted as magnetohydrodynamic poloidal waves, where fundamental and second harmonic modes coexist. The NTC oscillation and the fundamental wave have similar periods, but are phase shifted by a quarter of period. From the correlation between both signals, and the proximity of the NTC source (localized via triangulation) with Cluster, we infer that the poloidal perturbations are spatially uniform between the source and the satellites. From the phase shift between signals, we conclude that the electrostatic wave which converts into NTC is mainly governed by the plasma density, affected by movements of the magnetic field lines. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the observations can be used to perform a magnetoseismology of the emitting surface. The results show a steepening of the plasmapause density profile near the satellites, which can be responsible for the generation of NTC emission.

Our purpose is to characterize the evolution of the magnetopause Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) wave activity with changes in thickness of the adjacent boundary layer, geomagnetic latitude and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation. As the IMF turns northward, wave activity may be generated at the dayside before propagating down the tail, where the boundary layer is expected to support longer wavelengths. We use two-point observations on the dusk magnetopause at low latitudes, from Geotail on the dayside and Cluster tailward of the dusk terminator. We quantify the wavelength, power, wavefront steepness and propagation direction at Cluster. An estimate of the thickness of the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL) is obtained by correlating normal distances to the magnetopause, derived from two empirical solar-wind-driven models, with a systematic relationship (the "transition parameter") found between the electron number density and temperature; the correlation factor is used to infer the temporal evolution of the thickness of the locally sampled layer. We find that wavelengths are controlled by the IMF clock angle, as expected when generated by the KH mechanism at the dayside, although amplitudes, wavefront steepness and propagation directions are more closely correlated with the layer thickness. A survey of parameter space provides evidence of the contribution of the KH mechanism to the widening of the electron LLBL.

We examine the near-Earth Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection (ICME) apparently related to the intense Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) event of 20 January 2005. Our purpose is to contribute to the understanding of the macroscopic structure, evolution and dynamics of the solar corona and heliosphere. Using Cluster, ACE and Wind data in the solar wind, and Geotail data in the magnetosheath, we perform a multi-spacecraft analysis of the ICME-driven shock, post-shock magnetic discontinuities and ejecta. Traversals by the well-separated near-Earth spacecraft provide a coherent picture of the ICME geometry. Following the shock, the ICME sequence starts with a hot pileup, i.e., a sheath, followed by a fast ejecta characterised by a non-compressive density enhancement (NCDE), which is caused essentially by an enrichment in helium. The plasma and magnetic observations of the ejecta are consistent with the outskirts of a structure in strong expansion, consisting of nested magnetic loops still connected to the Sun. Within the leading edge of the ejecta, we establish the presence of a tilted current sheet substructure. An analysis of the observations suggests that the tilted current sheet is draped within the overlying cloud canopy, ahead of a magnetic cloud-like structure. The flux rope interpretation of this structure near L1, confirmed by observations of the corresponding magnetic cloud, provided by Ulysses at 5.3 AU and away from the Sun – Earth line, indicates that the bulk of the cloud is in the northwest sector as seen from the Earth, with its axis nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic. This is consistent with the primary direction of travel of the fast halo CME observed at the Sun. Moreover, the NCDE and helium enrichment are consistent with the position near the streamer belt of the flaring active region NOAA 10720 associated with the CME. However, differences between interplanetary and solar observations indicate a large rotation of the erupting filament and overlying arcade, which can be attributed to the flux rope being subject to the helical kink instability. Knowledge of the electron density distribution in the solar corona put constraints on the magnetic field configurations for coronal modeling and on initial conditions for solar wind modeling. We work with polarized SOHO/LASCO-C2 images from the last two recent minima of solar activity (1996-1997 and 2008-2010), devoid of coronal mass ejections. The goals are to derive the 4D electron density distributions in the corona by applying a newly developed time-dependent tomographic reconstruction method and to compare the results between the two solar minima and with two magnetohydrodynamic models. First, we confirm that the values of the density distribution in thermodynamic models are more realistic than in polytropic ones. The tomography provides more accurate distributions in the polar regions, and we find that the density in tomographic and thermodynamic solutions varies with the solar cycle in both polar and equatorial regions. Second, we find that the highest-density structures do not always correspond to the predicted large-scale heliospheric current sheet or its helmet streamer but can follow the locations of pseudo-streamers. We deduce that tomography offers reliable density distributions in the corona, reproducing the slow time evolution of coronal structures, without prior knowledge of the coronal magnetic field over a full rotation. Finally, we suggest that the highest-density structures show a differential rotation well above the surface depending on how they are magnetically connected to the surface. Such valuable information on the rotation of large-scale structures could help to connect the sources of the solar wind to their in situ counterparts in future missions such as Solar Orbiter and Solar Probe Plus., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures

We report the first observation at high spatial resolution of long-period quasi-periodic pulsations (QPP) of X-ray\ud radiation during solar flares, made possible with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager(RHESSI), supported by complementary data at other wavelengths from space-based and ground-based telescopes. Evidence for the presence of a transequatorial loop possibly responsible for the detected periodicity connected with its kink mode is found. Our findings suggest that QPP can be interpreted as a periodic pumping of electrons in a compact flaring loop, modulated by oscillations in a magnetically linked and larger loop acting as a long-period magnetohydrodynamic resonator.\ud

Analysis of the interplanetary space weather environment will contribute to reducing uncertainties and assuring crew radiation safety.

We report the first detection of long-period (8-27 h) oscillatory intensity variations in a coronal filament. The filament is observed continuously as it crosses the solar disk in a 12-min-cadence SoHO/EIT 195 A uninterrupted data set. Cyclic intensity variations are found to be correlated along the filament, while the most pronounced oscillations are detected at its southern end for nearly 6 days. The dominant period of these oscillations is 12.1 h and the amplitude of the intensity variations reaches approximately 10% of the background intensity. The ultra-long-period oscillations may be interpreted in terms of slow string MHD modes or may be connected with thermal over-stability associated with peculiarities of the cooling/heating function and with the effect of neutrals. These theoretical predictions however do not explain the spatial structure of the oscillations along the filament.

The magnetic field considered to reside at the base of the convection zone is presumed to vary over the solar activity cycle. We examine the effect of such a buried magnetic layer on the properties of solar p-modes. Analytical and numerical solutions to the dispersion relation for these modes are presented. Frequency changes due to the stored magnetic field are found to be negligible in comparison with the low- and intermediate-degree frequency shifts reported over the solar activity cycle. Nonetheless, there are grounds for inferring the signature of such a buried field through examining shifts of various degree. The p-mode frequencies are increased proportionally to the square of the field strength at the base of the convection zone and depend upon the thickness of the magnetic layer.

Transverse loop oscillations observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly instrument on the Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft are studied after an impulsive solar flare eruption on 2012 May 8. We have found that a transversely oscillating coronal loop seen in the 171 A bandpass oscillates in anti-phase with respect to adjacent larger loops seen in the 193 A and 211 A bandpasses. These unusual oscillations are analyzed to investigate the excitation mechanism responsible for their initial inwardly directed anti-phase behavior. The transverse oscillations are analyzed by constructing space-time diagrams from cuts made parallel to the projected loop displacements. The displacement time oscillation profiles are background subtracted and fitted with a damped cosine curve that includes a linear change in the period with time. The local magnetic topology of the active region is modeled using potential field source surface extrapolation. It reveals that the loops are anchored in different topological regions with foot point locations identified on either side of the EUV flare peak emission source. In this context, the oscillation characteristics indicate that the excitation mechanism is closely linked to the local magnetic field topology and the reconnection generated wave dynamics in the active region rather than following an external flare blast wave. We discuss how observations such as these may serve to identify reconnection processes in similar quadrupolar active regions.

New capabilities for studying the Sun allow us to image for the first time the magnetic Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability developing at the surface of a fast coronal mass ejecta (CME) less than 150 Mm above the solar surface. We conduct a detailed observational investigation of this phenomenon, observed off the east solar limb on 2010 November 3, in the EUV with SDO/AIA. In conjunction with STEREO-B/EUVI, we derive the CME source surface position. We ascertain the timing and early evolution of the CME outflow leading to the instability onset. We perform image and spectral analysis, exploring the CME plasma structuring and its parabolic flow pattern. As we evaluate and validate the consistency of the observations with theoretical considerations and predictions, we take the view that the ejecta layer corresponds to a reconnection outflow layer surrounding the erupting flux rope, accounting for the timing, high temperature (~11.6 MK), and high flow shear (~680 km s–1) on the unstable CME northern flank and for the observed asymmetry between the CME flanks. From the irregular evolution of the CME flow pattern, we infer a shear gradient consistent with expected spatial flow variations across the KH-unstable flank. The KH phenomenon observed is tied to the first stage of a linked flare-CME event.
