Results from a recent BPS and NSP survey (2020) confirmed psychological practitioners are an at-risk group for their overall wellbeing. While most research to date focuses on clinical psychologists, limited research exists on counselling psychologists (CP), and more specifically trainee CP who are at an optimal time in their career to learn stress management and explore self-care strategies before entering the professional world. A mixed-methods study was therefore conducted with (n= 45) U.K. based CP trainees to explore 3 main objectives; (1) to measure trainees’ current levels of stress, (2) to understand trainees’ experience of using self-care tools in their own lives, and (3) to explore specific facilitators and barriers to support for trainees, if any.Initially, the Perceived Stress Scale-10 item (PSS-10), was used to measure current levels of trainee stress. 71.1 per cent of the sample scored in the moderate stress range. Following this (n= 10) trainees participated in follow-up semi-structured interviews. Using thematic analysis 4 main themes emerged; 1. Practising what we preach, 2. Individual differences, 3. Training Structure, and 4. Competing demands. In this article, we focus on the most prominent subthemes which are key barriers as noted by the majority of participants: from Theme 3-Placement hours, and from Theme 4-Influence of finances. Overall, this paper concludes that despite the moderate stress level amongst this population, there is still an attempt by trainees to apply self-care to their own lives but with key facilitators and barriers in this respect.

Background Urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR) is a screening assay for chronic kidney disease (CKD). A value of >30 mg/g is flagged abnormal, but lower ratios have prognostic implications. Thus, to maximize diagnostic utility, urine albumin (uAlb) should be measurable to 3 mg/L to match the lowest creatinine concentration generally utilized (10 mg/dL). Most uAlb assays have lower limits of quantitation (LLOQs) 2- to 4-fold higher. We sought to determine the performance characteristics of a commonly used uAlb assay at 3 mg/L and to evaluate the clinical screening impact of reducing the LLOQ. Methods Urine was serially diluted to assess uAlb linearity and precision for concentrations near the claimed LLOQ (12 mg/L). Samples (n = 30) with uAlb Results The assay was linear to 1.6 mg/L. Interday precision at 3.7 mg/L and 4.3 mg/L was 7.7% and 8.6%, respectively. Minimal bias was observed between labs (y = 1.091x − 0.75; average bias = −0.13 mg/L). Clinical validation demonstrated 501 of 1239 samples (40.4%) had uAlb 10 mg/L, 107 of 499 (21.4%) would have a ratio flagged abnormal at >30 mg/g. Using the numeric value for these samples to 3 mg/L reduced alarm to Conclusions A uAlb LLOQ of 3 mg/L improves screening utility of uACR by simplifying reporting and clinical interpretation when uAlb is low and provides clinical information for prognostic tools developed for people at risk of CKD.

Organisational injustice, betrayal, moral transgression, wrongdoing, or breach of deeply held values and beliefs can manifest in frontline staff as Post Traumatic Embitterment Disorder (PTED), Moral Injury and/or PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). PTED and Moral Injury are fundamentally the same and could not be discriminated from each other. The constructs of PTED and Moral Injury can be assimilated into that of PTSD, rather than exist as comorbid conditions. Chronic embitterment is of clinical significance and often a symptom of PTSD, which may be inextricably linked to the traumatic incident(s) and often expressed as persistent blame of self or others, in DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for PTSD, D2 and D3. Chronic embitterment and moral pain can maintain PTSD symptoms.

Community is often imagined as a space of common beliefs, shared values and/or common purpose. For many individuals of non-normative gender or sexual identity, sports are a means to find and/or develop community. Fostered as spaces of inclusivity and an alternative to heteronormativity and cissexism, sports teams enable and promote a progressive community potential. However, they simultaneously erect overarching boundaries at the expense of some bodies and identities. Based on narratives of 30 diversely identified queer individuals, the authors find that within Canadian queer sports spaces complexities with respect to diverse embodiments – from femme invisibility, racism and trans acceptance, to a preference for androgyny, and fat phobia – ignite uncertainties of community idealism. This paper argues for a re-conceptualisation of community that is based on complexity and struggle, rather than on an assumed unity and, thus privileged safety.

A diverse assemblage of Late Quaternary continental ostracodes (Class Crustacea) belonging to at least 15 genera and 40 species (including 11 new species and one new genus, Plicocandona, described here) was found in sediments of former groundwater discharge deposits located in valleys of southern Nevada, U.S.A. The fossiliferous deposits are located in Las Vegas, Coyote Springs, Indian Springs, Sandy, and Pahrump Valleys. The ostracodes include species that were probably living in wetmeadow, seep, flowing-spring, stream, and wetland environments, and include aquifer species. Those environments indicate a higher level of effective moisture than occurs today during several episodes of the Late Pleistocene to Early Holocene, from ~140 to ~9 ka. The ostracode assemblages are significant to our understanding of regional paleohydrology and also contribute to the growing knowledge of aquifer taxa diversity and biogeography.

This article considers the influence of sexuality and desire in qualitative research. Feminist researchers promote critical reflexivity in response to traditional social science methodological approaches, which advocate objectivity and neutrality. While reflexivity has become part and parcel of feminist research, an aspect of the subjective experience of doing research requiring more attention is how desire, intimacy and/or sexuality inform the research process. This paper draws on previous studies as well as recent research experiences to argue that desire is a powerful form of communication that can be productive and insightful for our analyses and knowledge production.

Health norms have changed over the past three decades, imposing more responsibility for health onto the individual. There are gendered implications of these changes which, when combined with increasing anti-aging pressures, have the potential to intensify the disciplinary relationship women have with their bodies. This paper, based upon interviews with 14 women, examines the impact of dominant health and anti-aging discourses on women's body practices, including exercise, makeup, clothing and diet, and ongoing construction of gendered subjectivity. Findings suggest that the women in this study are motivated to do particular body practices because of their concern with having a healthy and youthful ‘looking’ body. The women's stories reveal that anti-aging and health discourses function to reinforce normative bodily demands of femininity and consequently to intensify disciplinary control of their bodies. In recent decades there has been considerable debate about the role and meaning of feminism in younger women's lives. Feminism can be understood as an empowering discourse, fostering critical awareness and resistance to dominant social norms. However, it can also be experienced as regulatory and disciplinary, clearly defining who and what constitutes a "good" feminist. Utilizing Michel Foucault's principle of care of the self, this paper analyzes women's body practices in relation both to women's interpretation of feminism and to dominant feminist discourses. The complexities of negotiating diverse social identities, as well as women's desire for a happier life and greater self-worth, provide some important nuances to contemporary debates about feminism.

This article considers the recent trends in the palm oil market balance and the future prospects for palm oil fundamentals. The article finds that there exists potential for the demand for palm oil and its products to increase quite steeply, partly due to emerging demand as a relatively cheap biofuel (whether as palm biodiesel or for direct burning), and partly due to its price advantages in edible applications. In terms of supply, as long as there is willingness to plant more area with oil palm in environmentally sensitive areas, there will be continued growth in the oil palm industry. This development is likely to be led primarily by Indonesia with increasing areas planted with oil palm, notably in Kalimantan, and by continued yield improvements in Malaysia.

Play as a learning practice increasingly is under challenge as a valued component of early childhood education. Views held in parallel include confirmation of the place of play in early childhood education and, at the same time, a denigration of the role of play in favor for more teacher-structured and formal activities. As a consequence, pedagogical approaches towards play, the curriculum activities that constitute play, and the appropriateness of play in educational settings, have come under scrutiny in recent years. In this context, this study investigates children’s perspectives of play and how they understand the role of play and learning in their everyday activities. This article reports on an Australian study where teacher-researchers investigated child-led insights into what counts as play in their everyday classroom activities. Children (aged 3–4 years) described play as an activity that involved their active participation in “doing” something, being with peers, and having agency and ownership of ideas. Children did not always characterize their activities as “play”, and not all activities in the preschool program were described as play. The article highlights that play and learning are complex concepts that may be easily dismissed as separate, when rather they are deeply intertwined. Black mats are prominent features of the late Pleistocene and Holocene stratigraphic record in the southern Great Basin. Faunal, geochemical, and sedimentological evidence shows that the black mats formed in several microenvironments related to spring discharge, ranging from wet meadows to shallow ponds. Small land snails such as Gastrocopta tappaniana and Vertigo berryi are the most common mollusk taxa present. Semiaquatic and aquatic taxa are less abundant and include Catinellids, Fossaria parva, Gyraulus parvus, and others living today in and around perennial seeps and ponds. The ostracodes Cypridopsis okeechobi and Scottia tumida, typical of seeps and low-discharge springs today, as well as other taxa typical of springs and wetlands, are common in the black mats. Several new species that lived in the saturated subsurface also are present, but lacustrine ostracodes are absent. The δ13C values of organic matter in the black mats range from −12 to −26‰, reflecting contributions of tissue from both C3 (sedges, most shrubs and trees) and C4 (saltbush, saltgrass) plants. Carbon-14 dates on the humate fraction of 55 black mats fall between 11,800 to 6300 and 2300 14C yr B.P. to modern. The total absence of mats in our sample between 6300 and 2300 14C yr B.P. likely reflects increased aridity associated with the mid-Holocene Altithermal. The oldest black mats date to 11,800–11,600 14C yr B.P., and the peak in the 14C black mat distribution falls at ∼10,000 14C yr B.P. As the formation of black mats is spring related, their abundance reflects refilling of valley aquifers starting no later than 11,800 and peaking after 11,000 14C yr B.P. Reactivation of spring-fed channels shortly before 11,200 14C yr B.P. is also apparent in the stratigraphic records from the Las Vegas and Pahrump Valleys. This age distribution suggests that black mats and related spring-fed channels in part may have formed in response to Younger Dryas (YD)-age recharge in the region. However, the inception of black mat formation precedes that of the YD by at least 40014C yr, and hydrological change is gradual, not rapid.

Preliminary determinations of ancient pelagic sedimentation rates agree with modern rates at about 4 meters per million years. By combining data on the thickness of graptolite zones from the North American Cordillera with data from other parts of the world, we have refined the Early Silurian time scale and obtained much better resolution than is possible for radiometric dates. The new Early Silurian time scale allows estimation of true rates of change in graptolite diversity. The Llandoverian diversity explosion is twice as rapid as was previously thought. The brevity of diversity lows and rapidity of speciation support modern theories of quantum evolution.

The first discovery in North America of a succession of graptolite faunas across the Ordovician–Silurian boundary has been made on Esquibel Island, in south-eastern Alaska, where five graptolite zones are represented in an 18 m interval of shale in the Descon Formation. Despite the thinness of the graptolite zones, no stratigraphical breaks can be inferred from more complete graptolite successions known elsewhere. The Alaskan faunas can be closely correlated with those of the standard British zones—the Dicellograptus anceps Zone (uppermost Ordovician), the Glyptograptus persculptus Zone (lowermost Silurian) and the immediately overlying Akidograptus acuminatus, Orthograptus vesiculosus and Monograptus cyphus Zones of the Lower Silurian. They thus give evidence of the cosmopolitan distribution of graptolite faunas during latest Ordovician and earliest Silurian time.

Silurian graptolites and Ordovician and Silurian chitinozoans have been found in well cores from the argillitic basement rocks of the Prudhoe Bay oil field and Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4 on the North Slope of Alaska. Monograptus spiralis (Geinitz), a late Llandoverian graptolite, and Middle Ordovician to Silurian chitinozoans belonging to the genus Conochitina Eisenack were discovered at a depth of 12,937-12,938 ft (3,943.2-3,943.5 m) in the ARCO-Humble Sag River State 1 well at Prudhoe Bay. Silurian chitinozoans of the genus Bursachitina Taugourdeau were found at a depth of 2,869-2,879 ft (874.5-877.5 m) in South Barrow test well 3 (NPR 4). South Barrow test well 1 yielded Silurian chitinozoans of the genus Sphaerochitina Eisenack at a depth of 3,341-3,346 ft (1,018.3 1,019.9 m) and the species Conochitina micracantha Eisenack, Cyathochitina campanulaeformis (Eisenack), and Lagenochitina baltica Eisenack, indicative of a Caradocian through Ashgillian age, at a depth of 3,535-3,537 ft (1,077.5-1,078.1 m). These findings prove that the basement rocks of the Barrow arch are of approximately the same age, at least over the 200 mi (325 km) between Prudhoe Bay and Point Barrow.

This chapter covers the geology of the western Soviet Arctic, extending from the Norwegian and Finnish borders on the west to the Lena River delta on the east. The original plan was to describe this vast region in three separately authored chapters. Members of the Institute of Arctic Geology (niiga or cevmorgeo) in Leningrad were invited to write these three chapters. In the beginning of 1978, these promised papers were not forthcoming, so the editors decided to synthesize the geology of the region from the most recently published Soviet literature. Fortunately, since the Second Arctic Geology Symposium held in 1970, the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park has routinely exchanged literature with the Soviet Institute of Arctic Geology. Using these data and our combined ability to assemble, translate, and assess Soviet literature, we attempt here to describe the geology of the western Soviet Arctic. Severe time limitations and spotty regional and topical data have made the subject coverage in this chapter somewhat uneven. Inaccuracies in translation and interpretation are also inevitable, and thus we have assembled a list of key references that are especially oriented to an English-speaking reader who may want to see the original data. The geology of the Kara, Barents, and Laptev Shelf Seas and the adjacent Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean has been synthesized by Demenitskaya and Hunkins (1971). The geology of this area has also been reviewed by both Soviet and western geologists in the Proceedings of the Second Arctic Geology Symposium (Pitcher, 1973). Since then, very few new data have been published on the marine geology of the Arctic Ocean bordering the U.S.S.R.

Construction of a map of basement rocks of Alaska has revealed a complexly deformed, arcuate Paleozoic continental margin that is a northwestern extension of the western margin of North America. Three key areas in Alaska (Nation River, Livengood, and Terra Cotta Mountains) have similar sections of Ordovician to Devonian and locally younger Paleozoic siliceous shale and chert, interfingering with limestone and containing various turbidity-current and slope deposits. Microplates moving north from the Pacific basin have collided with this Paleozoic continental margin and deformed and collapsed the original shale-out facies. A similar south-facing collapsed continental margin of middle and late Paleozoic age can be traced across the western Brooks Range of northern Alaska. We believe that this continental margin in the Brooks Range, although it is mainly younger, may be an extension of the same margin in central Alaska. This continental margin has been offset to the Brooks Range along the Porcupine megashear.

Sections of graptolitic shale within the Cordilleran foldbelt are very condensed. An average accumulation rate of 4 ∓ 1 m/m.y. calculated for these shales falls within the range of 2 to 5 m/m.y. for modern deep-sea clay and siliceous ooze. The Deep Sea Drilling Project has shown that once an age is determined for a stratigraphic horizon within a pelagic section, it is possible to estimate the ages of other horizons by assuming constant rates of sediment accumulation. This method, used on graptolitic shale, suggests that the time span represented by a graptolite zone is proportional to its thickness. The thickest zone analyzed is that of Nemagraptus gracilis , which is calculated to have spanned about 8 m.y., whereas the thinnest zone, Glyptograptus persculptus , took less than 1 m.y. to accumulate. The readily recognized zones of Nemagraptus gracilis and Climacograptus bicomis , which together consistently form thick biostratigraphic intervals, are the zones most commonly found, whereas the G. persculptus zone is very rare. A new subdivision of the Ordovician and Early Silurian time scale has been made on the basis of the calculated time duration of graptolite zones.
