Cladotanytarsus (Cladotanytarsus) sinjongensis Ree et Kim, 1988 Cladotanytarsus sinjongensis Ree et Kim, 1988: 19 (male, fig. 4a–c; South Korea). (Fig. 2A–D) Material examined. A set of subtle morphological differences used in diagnostics, often overlapped by intraspecific variations, make the determination of adult males of Cladotanytarsus one of the most difficult within Tanytarsini and Chironomidae. Accurately mounted and illustrated specimens, their precise measurements and appropriate interpretation of diagnostic features are thus decisive. In fact, determination of Cladotanytarsus sinjongensis may be a challenge when based on the illustrated original description, although several crucial characters indicate that the specimens presently examined are conspecific with those described from South Korea (Ree & Kim 1988). The males from North and South Korea compared here [data on the South Korean material, with remarks given in square brackets] are approximately of the same size, with the wing 1.18–1.45 mm long [1.2–1.3 mm], AR 0.90–1.03 [0.91–1.05], frontal tubercles 14–18 μm long [15–16 μm], similar lengths of palpomeres, leg ratios and the same body colouration. Genus: Cladotanytarsus Kieffer, 1921 The genus Cladotanytarsus is divided into two subgenera: Cladotanytarsus s. str. Kieffer, 1921 and Lenziella Kieffer, 1922 (Giłka 2011b, Giłka & Spies 2012, Puchalski & Giłka 2017). Since no character typical of Lenziella (a globular basal swelling in the inferior volsella nor lobes of the mid and hind leg tibiae apices) has been found in C. sinjongensis males, we place the species in the subgenus Cladotanytarsus s. str. The genus is represented by nearly 80 species known from all continents except Antarctica (Puchalski et al. 2018). From North Korea, apart from C. sinjongensis, now found and redescribed below, two Cladotanytarsus species have so far been recorded by Reiss (1980), but determined to the genus level, as Cladotanytarsus sp. Cladotanytarsus (Cladotanytarsus) crassus sp. n. is described from the USA (Oregon, Wyoming) and Canada (Ontario). The distinctive structure of the adult male hypopygium, bearing a thickset digitus and a stout elongated superior volsella, is presented. Intraspecific morphological variations are described in order to compare C. crassus and C. nigrovittatus (Goetghebuer, 1922), treated as close relatives. The geographical distribution and ecology of the two species are commented on.

We present the first specific record of a chironomid of the tribe Tanytarsini from early Eocene Cambay amber, India (52–53 Ma). The oldest known extinct tanytarsine genus, Gujaratomyia Giłka & Zakrzewska, gen. nov., is described on the basis of adult males of G. miripes Giłka & Zakrzewska, sp. nov. The species displays an unusual leg structure with unique leg ratios and tibial armature. The combination of the head and genital apparatus characters supports the hypothesis that Gujaratomyia and Cladotanytarsus are members of a common group within the subtribe Tanytarsina.

The specific name is a patronym commemorating the Chironomidae taxonomist and ecologist, Ole Anton Saether (1936–2013). Diagnosis. Acrostichal setae sparse, placed on top of scutum. Wing vein M3+4 ending only slightly proximally of R4+5 or under R4+5. Phallapodeme strongly curved in anterior section. Anal point stocky, with large spinulae densely arranged between prominent crests. Superior volsella with well-developed apical lip and small field of microtrichia confined to dorsolateral surface at base; digitus evenly tapering toward blunt tip. Stem of median volsella strongly elongated, straight or slightly and evenly curved at most, bearing furcate lamellae on apex. Inferior volsella with dorsal lobe forming a nose. Description. Adult male (n = 73 specimens + 2 male hypopygia). Colouration (in alcohol). Eyes black. Antenna, tentorium, scutal stripes, scutellum, postnotum and sternum brown to dark brown. Head capsule, mouthparts, ground colour of thorax, legs and abdomen including hypopygium brown or light brown with greenish undertone. Wing and haltere pale brownish. Head. Eyes reniform, broadly separated by frons. Antenna with 13 distinct flagellomeres; plume fullydeveloped or weak, AR 0.69–0.92 (0.80, n = 18) in specimens with plume fully-developed or AR 0.54–0.67 (0.60, n = 3) in specimens with plume reduced. Frontal tubercles minute, usually in a form of tiny swellings, rarely conical, 8 µm long at most. Lengths of palpomeres 2–5 (in µm) in specimens with antennal plume fully-developed (n = 21): 32–44 (36), 72–100 (88), 79–120 (94), 123–172 (144); palps shorter in specimens with plume reduced (n = 3): 32–40 (36), 66–92 (77), 76–100 (88), 112; pm4> pm3 (n = 21) or pm4 ≤ pm3 (n = 3). Clypeus with 7–14 setae. Thorax chaetotaxy. Ac 2–6 placed on top of scutum; Dc 5–9 on each side; Pa 1–2 exceptionally 3 on each side (n = 1); Scts 2–4, rarely 6 (n = 2). Wing (Fig. 1A, B). Length 1195–1590 (1405) µm. Venation pattern and chaetotaxy slightly variable (also in specimens of the same sample). Veins ending as follows (in order from base to tip): R1, Cu1 (or Cu1 ending under R1), M2+3, M3+4, R4+5 (or M3+4 ending under R4+5), M1+2; VR Cu 1.22–1.43 (1.31). Macrotrichia on C, R, distal half of M1+2, rarely on R1, distal part of R4+5 and distal half of false vein above M3+4, other veins bare; membrane with macrotrichia on r4+5, sometimes in m1+2, exceptionally a couple of macrotrichia in m3+4 (n = 1), other cells bare. Legs. Fore leg tibia with slightly curved spur 15–24 (20) µm long. Combs of mid and hind leg tibiae separated, ca. twice shorter than spurs; spurs of mid and hind leg unequal in shape (one shorter and straight, second longer and curved) and length: 12–24 µm long on mid leg and 20–36 µm long on hind leg. Basitarsus of mid leg with 2–3 sensilla chaetica. Gonostylus shorter than gonocoxite, 70–100 (80) µm long, rarely longer, up to 120 µm (n = 3, Finnish specimens). Phallapodeme strongly curved in anterior section. Anal tergite with bands of V-type separated, bearing 1 lateral seta on each side and 3–15 (8) median setae arranged irregularly at base of anal point (Figs 2A). Anal point stocky, broad at base, tongue-shaped or lanceolate, tapering toward blunt tip or with short nipple-like apical elongation, bearing 6–13 relatively large spinulae (exceptionally 3 spinulae present, n = 1) densely arranged between prominent crests (Figs 2A, 3A–E). Superior volsella rounded at base, narrowed at mid length, usually slightly swollen distally, with well-developed apical lip, 4–11 (usually 6–7) dorsal setae and small field of microtrichia confined to dorsolateral surface at base; digitus protruding slightly beyond apex of superior volsella, evenly tapering toward blunt tip (Figs 2A, 4A). Stem of median volsella strongly elongated, 40–60 (55) µm long, straight or slightly and evenly curved at most, bearing several setiform and 5–7 rarely 8 furcate lamellae on apex (Figs 2A, B, 5A–D). Inferior volsella with slight knee-like extension at base and distinct dorsal lobe forming a nose at mid length of inferior volsella (Figs 2A, 4A). Remarks. Our studies on Cladotanytarsus, by now carried out independently as based on materials from North America (M.P., W.G.) and Fennoscandia (L.P., W.G.) indicated that the same unknown species may occur in both the regions studied. Further materials from the Russian Far East confirmed its wide Holarctic distribution. As a result, Cladotanytarsus saetheri is described and compared with its relative, C. gedanicus. These two species were previously misidentified (Giłka 2009) due to morphological similarities in the hypopygial structure, i.a. peculiar shape of the median volsellae consisted of a long stem bearing dense furcate lamellae on apex (cf. Giłka 2001: fig. 2). A detailed character analysis indicated several distinct differences between C. saetheri and C. gedanicus, as shown in Figures 1 & 3–5 and Table 2. Though the weakly plumose and abbreviated antennae, shortened palps and changed proportions of legs segments in several examined males of Cladotanytarsus saetheri may disrupt the species definition, these characters were found as a result of a limited flying ability in specimens collected from the water surface (material from Finland). Thus, they are treated separately in the above description; nevertheless, all the presently examined individuals are defined as conspecific. Interestingly, the Finnish specimens were not sampled by simultaneous netting from the air and vegetation. So, it is probable, that they were copulating on the water surface. Such nontypical mode of life may have a diverse background, being e.g. an adaptation to austere conditions, which in a longterm period may lead to behavioural and spatial isolation (e.g. Serra-Tosio 1974, Hermann et al. 1987, Giłka & Paasivirta 2009, Giłka et al. 2013). This phenomenon usually results in parallel morphological modifications of the wings, antennae, palps and legs, in some cases called as atrophied aberrant characters, and may occur in different Chironomidae groups, including the Tanytarsini (e.g. Saether 1971, Cranston 1980, Giłka 2011b). Some peculiar leg structures/characters in Tanytarsini, however, are recogniZed as distinct apomorphies (Giłka 2011b; ZakrZewska et al., in press). Cladotanytarsus gedanicus is now for the first time recorded from the Nearctic region, although its wide range in the Holarctic was previously indicated (Giłka 2011a). It has so far been reported from Europe (Poland, Finland, Sweden) and the Russian Far East (Makarchenko et al. 2005, Yavorskaya et al. 2017); however, the records from Asia require confirmation. Cladotanytarsus saetheri, sp. nov., a widely distributed species (Fennoscandia; Russia: Far East; Canada: Manitoba; USA: Colorado, Michigan, South Carolina, Wisconsin) is described and compared with C. gedanicus Giłka, 2001 on the basis of new records (Fennoscandia; Canada: Manitoba, Nunavut; USA: Colorado, New Mexico). Intraspecific morphological variability of adult males is presented in order to delimit the two previously misidentified species.

Mitochondrial DNA sequences from cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) were used to provide a phylogeny of the Chironomidae (Diptera) from Turkey. Data were obtained from 70 species of Chironomidae belonging to the genera Ablabesmyia, Chironomus, Cladotanytarsus, Conchapelopia, Cricotopus, Cryptochironomus, Dicrotendipes, Endochironomus, Eukiefferiella, Kiefferulus, Macropelopia, Micropsectra, Microtendipes, Paracladopelma, Paracricotopus, Paratanytarsus, Paratendipes, Paratrichocladius, Polypedilum, Psectrocladius, Psectrotanypus, Rheocricotopus, Tanytarsus, Thienemannimyia, Virgatanytarsus and Zavrelimyia. Neighbour-joining (NJ) and maximum likelihood (ML) analyses were used to identify the relationships among species. We confirmed monophyly of all sampled subfamilies and also tribes Chironomini, Tanytarsini, Macropelopiini and Pentaneurini, with the exception of subfamily Tanypodinae in ML analysis. However, in Chironomini, genus Chironomus, Cryptochironomus, Endochironomus and Paratendipes were monophyletic, while Polypedilum was not. Likewise, in Tanytarsini, genus Paratanytarsus and Cladotanytarsus were monophyletic, while Tanytarsus and Micropsectra were not. Also, in Macropelopiini and Pentaneurini, genus Macropelopia and Zavrelimyia were monophyletic. However, Ablabesmyia, genus of Pentaneurini, formed monophyletic group only in NJ analysis. In this study, we determined an unexpected inclusion of a Tanytarsus brundini individual into Micropsectra group. Gonostylus ca. 75 ��m long, with apical seta placed on conical tubercle. Anal tergite with V-type separated bands and 4���10 setae arranged in irregular rows or setae dispersed at base of anal point. Anal point variable in shape, elongate, evenly tapering towards apex, with up to 6 spinulae between narrow crests or crests not developed (Fig. 1 A, C). Superior volsella pear-shaped in dorsal aspect, with more on less narrowed distal part, bearing field of microtrichia on proximal (swollen) part, 6���9 dorsal setae and 3 long setae placed on conical tubercles at base. Digitus straight or slightly curved, long, extending far beyond superior volsella, with finger-like tip (Fig. 1 A, D). Stem of median volsella relatively long (ca. 35 ��m), straight or finely curved, as shown in Fig. 1 E, bearing several setiform and 4���5 furcate lamellae: 3���4 strong and 1���2 weaker (Fig. 1 B, E). Inferior volsella with slight lateral knee-like extension at base, distinctly curved and posteromedially or medially directed, darkly pigmented dorsomedian ridge narrow (Fig. 1 A, B, F). Remarks. In the Sublettes��� collection of North American Cladotanytarsus, nearly 20 adult and pharate male specimens as well as their pupal exuviae were identified as C. acornutus. Records of this species have so far been confined to the Florida Everglades, where C. acornutus has been defined as one of the most abundant chironomids and an outstanding indicator of nutrient-poor and minimally disturbed habitats (Jacobsen & Bilyj 2007, Epler 2014). Our records from southern Ontario, Canada, and from the northern part of South Carolina, USA, provide evidence that the geographical distribution of C. acornutus is wider than that previously assumed. According to Epler (op. cit.), larvae outside of the Everglades believed to be this species are determinable after association with a pupa that lacks a thoracic horn and/or with an adult male that has weak hypopygial anal point crests and lacks acrostichal setae. Indeed, the currently examined specimens have thin or reduced crests, and the acrostichals are usually absent (at most 3 if present). Two species of the genus Cladotanytarsus Kieffer, 1921 are described as adult males, both peculiar in having distinctively elongated hypopygial anal points. The male of Cladotanytarsus bilyji Gilka et Puchalski, sp. nov. (Canada, Manitoba; USA, Ohio) is presumed to be a close relative of C. nigrovittatus (Goetghebuer, 1922). Another unknown Cladotanytarsus species (USA, Illinois and Louisiana) keys with the European C. donmcbeani Langton et McBean, 2010. The intraspecific variability of the male C. acornutus Jacobsen et Bilyj, 2007 is also presented on the basis of new records (Canada, Ontario; USA, South Carolina). Cladotanytarsus males with similarly structured elongate anal points are reviewed, including C. tobaquardecimus Kikuchi et Sasa, 1990, considered a junior synonym (syn. nov.) of C. conversus (Johannsen, 1932). As a compilation of this study, a key to the identification of the adult males of 14 Cladotanytarsus species is provided.

Cladotanytarsus (Lenziella) glaber Giłka et Puchalski, sp. nov. Type material. Holotype, adult male: USA, OREGON, Klamath County, Rocky Point Resort at the Upper Klamath Lake, Recreation Creek (42��28'42"N / 122��05'16"W), 2 June 1982, leg. J.E. Sublette. Paratype: 1 male (same location and date as for holotype). Derivation of the name. The specific name, derived from the Latin word meaning hairless, refers to the extensive microtrichia-free area of the hypopygial tergite. Diagnosis. Tibial apices of mid and hind leg with slight lobes armed with dense curved setae; spurs present, variable in shape. Anal tergite with extensive microtrichia-free area at anal point base. Anal point stout, tongueshaped. Superior volsella abruptly narrowed in distal half and slightly swollen apically. Median volsella with stocky stem bearing 7���8 furcate lamellae. Inferior volsella with distinct dorsomedian ridge and large globular swelling ventrally. Description. Adult male (n = 2). Colouration (slide-mounted specimens). Eyes black. Antennal pedicel, tentorium, scutal stripes, scutellum, postnotum, sternum and proximal abdominal segments dorsally brown. Cladotanytarsus sp. (Fig. 4) Material examined. USA. ILLINOIS. Du Bois, 24 April 1914, 1 male hypopygium (S66-1261). LOUISIANA. New Orleans, 14 May 1952, 4 male hypopygia (S64-818, 821, 822, 823). Main body parts missing. Ex coll. M. & J.E. Sublette (legator unknown). Deposit in DEUM. Diagnostic description. Adult male (n = 5, hypopygia). Hypopygium (Fig. 4). Gonostylus shorter than gonocoxite, ca. 85 ��m long, with apex pointed. Anal tergite with V-type separated bands and 7���9 median setae placed in two irregular rows. Anal point with parallel-sided distal elongation, apically blunt or rounded, bearing 3 spinulae at most or spinulae absent (Fig. 4 A, C). Superior volsella horn-shaped, with pointed apex, bearing field of microtrichia on 2/3 basal part or basal half at least, 5���8 dorsal setae and 3 long setae placed on conical tubercles at base. Digitus straight or very slightly curved, apex narrow, extending far beyond superior volsella (Fig. 4 A, D). Stem of median volsella stocky, ca. 30 ��m long, shorter than its longest lamellae, bearing several setiform and 6���7 branched lamellae (4 strong and 2���3 weaker) (Fig. 4 B, E). Inferior volsella as drawn in Fig. 4 F, strongly broadened at base, with distinct round margin on ventral side, dorsomedian ridge thin (Fig. 4 A, B, F). Remarks. Among the oldest specimens sampled from the Sublettes��� collection we found several male hypopygia belonging to a species which, in view of the set of diagnostic characters, deserves to be presented. The slender anal point with the parallel-sided distal elongation, the horn-shaped superior volsella, the stocky stem of the median volsella bearing stout branched lamellae and the inferior volsella strongly broadened at the base may indicate a close similarity to Cladotanytarsus donmcbeani Langton et McBean, 2010 (cf. Fig. 4 and Langton & McBean 2010, figs 1��� 4). In terms of the structure of the hypopygial anal point, which bears a longitudinal bar but no crests or spinulae, as well as the shape of hypopygial volsellae and the body colouration, Cladotanytarsus ecristatus is one of the most peculiar species within the genus. Adult males of this peculiar species have an extremely elongated, sagittate and darkly pigmented hypopygial anal point lacking crests and spinulae (Giłka 2009a, figs 13, 14). Cladotanytarsus sagittifer has so far been known from three sites in the United Arab Emirates. The specific epithet honours Bohdan Bilyj (Etobicoke, Canada), to commemorate his contribution to the study of Nearctic Cladotanytarsus. Diagnosis. Anal point strongly elongate, evenly tapering toward apex. Superior volsella slender, narrowed at mid length, with field of microtrichia on basal part dorsally. Stem of median volsella ca. 40 ��m long, longer than its setiform and 7���8 furcate lamellae, all arranged evenly on median and apical part of stem. Inferior volsella with lateral knee-like extension at base, with well-developed angular dorsomedian ridge. Description. Adult male (n = 2). Colouration (slide-mounted specimens). Eyes black. Antennal pedicel, tentorium, scutal stripes, scutellum, postnotum and sternum dark brown. Head capsule, antennal flagellum, mouthparts and abdomen greenish to light brown; hypopygium and legs slightly darker. Wing membrane transparent with greenish undertone, veins brownish. Head. Eyes reniform, broadly separated. Antenna with 13 flagellomeres, AR 0.92���0.94; plume fullydeveloped. Frontal tubercles cylindrical, 12���24 ��m long. Lengths of palpomeres 2���5 (in ��m): 32���36, 84���104, 100��� 108, 164 (n = 1). Clypeus semicircular, with 14���15 setae. Thorax chaetotaxy. Ac 7���8, Dc 8, Pa 1, Scts 4���6. Wing (Fig. 2). Length 1520���1720 ��m. Shape, venation pattern and chaetotaxy typical of the genus, as shown in Fig. 2; Cu1, R1 and m3+4 bare or with few macrotrichia at most; VR Cu 1.18���1.28. Legs. Fore leg tibia with straight spur ca. 20 ��m long. Combs of mid and hind leg tibiae separated, each bearing straight spur: ca. 15���20 ��m long on mid leg and up to ca. 30 ��m long on hind leg. Basitarsus of mid leg with 2���4 hook-shaped sensilla chaetica. For lengths of leg segments and leg ratios, see Table 2. Hypopygium (Fig. 3). Gonostylus shorter than gonocoxite, ca. 70 ��m long, with blunt apex. Anal tergite with V-type separated bands and 7���8 median setae placed in two rows. Anal point elongate, evenly tapering towards slender apex (slightly deformed in paratype specimen, Fig. 3 C), bearing 7���8 spinulae between well-developed crests, entire area surrounding base of anal point covered with microtrichia (Fig. 3 A, C). Superior volsella slender, elongate, more or less narrowed at mid length, bearing field of microtrichia dorsally only on basal part or proximal 1/3 at most, 6���11 dorsal setae, 1���2 setae on anteromedian margin and 3 long setae placed on conical tubercles at base. Digitus curved, long, extending far beyond superior volsella, with finger-like tip (Fig. 3 A, D). Stem of median volsella slightly curved and directed posteriorly, long (ca. 40 ��m), bearing several setiform and 7���8 furcate lamellae: 4 strong and 3���4 weaker, all arranged evenly on median and apical part of stem (Fig. 3 B, E). Inferior volsella with lateral knee-like extension at base, evenly curved and directed posteromedially, darkly pigmented dorsomedian ridge distinctly protruding, angular (Fig. 3 A, B, F). Remarks. Apart from the strongly elongate anal tergite point, this new species can be distinguished from other Cladotanytarsus on the following combination of characters: the superior volsella slender and narrowed at mid length, with field of microtrichia only on basal part dorsally, the median volsella composed of a long stem and 7���8 furcate lamellae and the inferior volsella with a lateral knee-like extension at the base, bearing a well-developed angular dorsomedian ridge. According to preliminary determinations (Sublette, Saether; pers. comm.), there are at least 8 or 9 additional Cladotanytarsus species recorded from the Lake Winnipeg region (locus typicus of C. bilyji), which should be compared with those described by Bilyj and Davies (1989) from northwestern Ontario. We examined all the Cladotanytarsus species by Bilyj (op. cit.) known from adult males (excl. C. aeiparthenus Bilyj, 1989). However, even when atypical variations are included, most of the males examined (except for C. muricatus Bilyj, 1989, see remarks below) do not fully fit the present concept of the strongly elongate and narrow hypopygial anal point. Males of those species have relatively short anal points (C. daviesi Bilyj, 1989, C. pinnaticornis Bilyj, 1989), without a distinct distal elongation and/or at least distinctly broadened at the base. Males of C. elaensis Bilyj, 1989 have acute anal points, but are relatively broad and surrounded with a microtrichia-free area at the base; in C. tribelus Bilyj, 1989 the anal point is narrow and parallel-sided but moderately long (Bilyj & Davies 1989; figs 6, 8). As far as the general shape of the anal point is concerned, there is a slight resemblance between the males of C. fusiformis Bilyj, 1989 and those of C. bilyji; although these two species can be easily separated also by the shape of the superior volsella, which in the former is nearly half as long as the digitus, and the median volsella has a smaller number of lamellae (cf. Fig. 3 and Bilyj & Davies 1989, fig. 4). Originally, C. fusiformis was also compared with C. nigrovittatus (Goetghebuer, 1922). The latter species is presumed to be the closest relative of C. bilyji (see the key below). Finally, the males of C. mancus (Walker, 1856) [or the C. mancus group sensu Giłka (2001)], often misidentified with C. nigrovittatus, should also be included in this comparison. Cladotanytarsus viridiventris (Malloch) Tanytarsus viridiventris Malloch, 1915: Malloch 1915: 491 (adult male; USA, Michigan).? The specific name has so far presumably been erroneously and repeatedly ascribed to various species (Giłka 2011b; J. Sublette, pers. comm.), and a subgeneric placement for Cladotanytarsus viridiventris cannot not be defined with certainty. For this reason it is not included in the present key. Nevertheless, a male specimen originally illustrated, having an elongate anal point and a long stem of the median volsella (Malloch 1915, pl. xxxvi, fig. 8), couples with C. acornutus, C. bilyji, C. muricatus or C. nigrovittatus. Our laboratory colleague, Marta Zakrzewska, attempted to collect Cladotanytarsus donmcbeani on the shores of Loch Leven, Scotland (locus typicus; Langton & McBean 2010, see also fig. 9), at the turn of April and May 2016. Adult chironomid collections were carried out near Namdae stream located at Jeollabuk-do, Muju-gun, Mujueup, Dangsan-ri in 2008 and 2009. Among 21 species of the tribe Tanytarsini identified from Muju collections, six new species (Cladotanytarsus neovanderwulpi, Paratanytarsus paramikesecumdus, Rheotanytarsus parapentapodus, Rheotanytarsus sungili, Tanytarsus neotamaoctavus, and Tanytarsus synyunosecundus) and four previously unrecorded species (Cladotanytarsus vanderwulpi, Paratanytarsus inopertus, Tanytarsus tamagotoi, and Tanytarsus uresiacutus) were confirmed. They are fully described with illustrations. As a result of this report, the Korean fauna of Tanytarsini consists of 37 species, 6 genera. In total, 128 species, 52 genera, 5 subfamilies of the family Chironomidae are listed in Korea.

Mid leg tibia with two spurs: one spur darkly pigmented, straight, c. 15 ��m long, second spur lightly pigmented, sinuous, c. 20 ��m long; hind leg tibia with single dark straight spur, c. 10 ��m long. Basitarsus of mid leg with 2 hook-shaped sensilla chaetica. For lengths of leg segments and leg ratios see Table 1. Hypopygium (Fig. 1). Gonostylus shorter than gonocoxite, c. ��m 60 long, broadest at base, apically rounded. Anal tergite with V-type separated bands and several (5) median setae. Anal point styliform, slender and strongly elongate, evenly tapering towards narrowly rounded apex, bearing few (4) spinulae at base and slender crests almost reaching the tip of anal point (Fig. 1 A, B). Superior volsella slender pear-shaped, broadest at base, narrowed in distal half and slightly swollen apically, bearing field of microtrichia on proximal half, 5 dorsal setae and 3 long setae placed on conical tubercles at base. Digitus straight or slightly curved, long, extending far beyond superior volsella, apically pointed (Fig. 1 A). Stem of median volsella stout, c. 30 ��m long, slightly curved and posteromedially directed, bearing several setiform and 3 strong furcate lamellae (Fig. 1 C, D). Inferior volsella broadest at base, tapering towards apex, with distinct lateral knee-like extension at base and slightly protruding dorsomedian ridge near apex, evenly curved posteromedially (Fig. 1 D). Remarks. At least three morphologically close relatives known from the Australasian and Indo-Pacific Regions should be compared with Cladotanytarsus stylifer to prevent misidentification, i.e.: C. bilinearis Glover, 1973 (South Australia, Queensland), C. conversus (Johannsen, 1932) (southern China, India, Indonesia, Thailand; also Europe) and C. isigacedeus (Sasa et Suzuki, 2000) (Japan, Ishigaki) (Glover 1973, Langton & Garcia 2000, Sasa & Suzuki 2000); the latter species originally ascribed to Tanytarsus and here given in new combination. Adult males of all these species have the similar strongly elongate hypopygial anal point, but the length/shape of the gonostylus, frontal tubercles, the arrangement of spinulae, the shape of hypopygial volsellae and main metric characters allow to separate them, as shown in Table 2. Three new species of Cladotanytarsus Kieffer namely, aduncus, ovatus, and verbosus are described; Cl. atridorsum (Kieffer), Cl. nigrovittatus (Goetghebuer) and Cl. tasmanicus Glover are recorded for the first time from India. A key to the known Indian species is given.

Tanytarsus bukavus Lehmann, 1979 et Tanytarsus congolensis Lehmann, 1979 sont transferes dans le genre Cladotanytarsus Kieffer. Les imagos mâles et les nymphes des deux especes sont redecrites et la femelle de T bukavus est decrite comme nouvelle pour la science. Following the inclusion of Lenziella Kieffer, 1922 into Cladotanytarsus Kieffer, 1921, the genus consists of two subgenera: Cladotanytarsus s. str. (type species: C. pallidus Kieffer, 1922) and Lenziella Kieffer, 1922 (type species: L. bicornuta Kieffer, 1922). Six species of the subgenus Lenziella known from the Holarctic region are diagnosed and reviewed. Lectotype of Cladotanytarsus wexionensis Brundin, 1947 is designated, and the name is treated as a synonym of Cladotanytarsus (L.) bicornutus Kieffer, 1922 in a new combination. Cladotanytarsus (L.) amandus Hirvenoja, 1962 (male) and C. (L.) crusculus (Sæther, 1971) (male, female, pupa) are redescribed. Cladotanytarsus (L.) latissimus sp. nov. (male, female, pupa), C. (L.) piniger sp. nov. (male), and C. (L.) subletteorum sp. nov. (male, female, pupa) are described. Keys to adults and pupae of Lenziella as well as data on biology of the species are presented.

First specific records of chironomids of the tribe Tanytarsini from New Caledonia based on detailed descriptions of new species are presented. Cladotanytarsus (Cladotanytarsus) stylifer sp. nov. and its closest relatives, i.a. Cladotanytarsus (C.) isigacedeus (Sasa et Suzuki, 2000), comb. nov., known from males bearing extraordinarily elongate hypopygial anal points are diagnosed. Paratanytarsus mirificus sp. nov. is described as adult male with unique structure of its hypopygium and shortened antennae. Diagnostic description of Tanytarsus fuscithorax Skuse, 1889 is also complemented.

Paratype male (BDN. No. 20280), data as for holotype. Etymology. From Latin bis, two, and seta, hair, referring to the two basimedial setae on the superior volsella, which is unique in the genus. Diagnosis. This species is characterized by the two basimedial setae on the superior volsella, with no setae between the anal crests on the base of the anal point. Male imago (n = 2). Total length 2.02���2.14 mm. Wing length 1.08���1.36 mm. Total length/wing length 1.57���1.87. Wing length/profemur length 2.25���2.36. Coloration yellowish brown; antenna brown; eyes black. Head. Frontal tubercles present. Ultimate flagellomere 360���400 ��m long. AR 0.91��� 0.92. Temporal setae: 5 inner, 0���1 outer verticals and 2 postorbitals. Clypeus with 12���13 setae. This species is known from Hainan Province of southern China (Oriental region). Remarks.
