We present and validate a novel method for noise injection of arbitrary spectra in quantum circuits that can be applied to any system capable of executing arbitrary single qubit rotations, including cloud-based quantum processors. As the consequences of temporally-correlated noise on the performance of quantum algorithms are not well understood, the capability to engineer and inject such noise in quantum systems is paramount. To date, noise injection capabilities have been limited and highly platform specific, requiring low-level access to control hardware. We experimentally validate our universal method by comparing to a direct hardware-based noise-injection scheme, using a combination of quantum noise spectroscopy and classical signal analysis to show that the two approaches agree. These results showcase a highly versatile method for noise injection that can be utilized by theoretical and experimental researchers to verify, evaluate, and improve quantum characterization protocols and quantum algorithms for sensing and computing., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. We show that space- and time-correlated single-qubit rotation errors can lead to high-weight errors in a quantum circuit when the rotation angles are drawn from heavy-tailed distributions. This leads to a breakdown of quantum error correction, yielding reduced or in some cases no protection of the encoded logical qubits. While heavy-tailed phenomena are prevalent in the natural world, there is very little research as to whether noise with these statistics exist in current quantum processing devices. Furthermore, it is an open problem to develop tomographic or noise spectroscopy protocols that could test for the existence of noise with such statistics. These results suggest the need for quantum characterization methods that can reliably detect or reject the presence of such errors together with continued first-principles studies of the origins of space- and time-correlated noise in quantum processors. Silicon Carbide is a promising host material for spin defect based quantum sensors owing to its commercial availability and established techniques for electrical and optical microfabricated device integration. The negatively charged silicon vacancy is one of the leading spin defects studied in silicon carbide owing to its near telecom photoemission, high spin number, and nearly temperature independent ground state zero field splitting. We report the realization of nanoTesla shot-noise limited ensemble magnetometry based on optically detected magnetic resonance with the silicon vacancy in 4H silicon carbide. By coarsely optimizing the anneal parameters and minimizing power broadening, we achieved a sensitivity of 3.5 nT/$\sqrt{Hz}$. This was accomplished without utilizing complex photonic engineering, control protocols, or applying excitation powers greater than a Watt. This work demonstrates that the silicon vacancy in silicon carbide provides a low-cost and simple approach to quantum sensing of magnetic fields.

Temporal noise correlations are ubiquitous in quantum systems, yet often neglected in the analysis of quantum circuits due to the complexity required to accurately characterize and model them. Autoregressive moving average (ARMA) models are a well-known technique from time series analysis that model time correlations in data. By identifying the space of completely positive trace reserving (CPTP) quantum operations with a particular matrix manifold, we generalize ARMA models to the space of CPTP maps to parameterize and simulate temporally correlated noise in quantum circuits. This approach, denoted Schr\"odinger Wave ARMA (SchWARMA), provides a natural path for generalization of classic techniques from signal processing, control theory, and system identification for which ARMA models and linear systems are essential. Quantum systems are promising candidates for sensing of weak signals as they can provide unrivaled performance when estimating parameters of external fields. However, when trying to detect weak signals that are hidden by background noise, the signal-to-noise-ratio is a more relevant metric than raw sensitivity. We identify, under modest assumptions about the statistical properties of the signal and noise, the optimal quantum control to detect an external signal in the presence of background noise using a quantum sensor. Interestingly, for white background noise, the optimal solution is the simple and well-known spin-locking control scheme. We further generalize, using numerical techniques, these results to the background noise being a correlated Lorentzian spectrum. We show that for increasing correlation time, pulse based sequences such as CPMG are also close to the optimal control for detecting the signal, with the crossover dependent on the signal frequency. These results show that an optimal detection scheme can be easily implemented in near-term quantum sensors without the need for complicated pulse shaping.

We examine the entanglement properties of a system that represents two driven microwave cavities each optomechanically coupled to two separate driven optical cavities which are connected by a single-mode optical fiber. The results suggest that it may be possible to achieve near-maximal entanglement of the microwave cavities, thus allowing a teleportation scheme to enable interactions for hybrid quantum computing of superconducting qubits with optical interconnects., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We compare failure distributions of quantum error correction circuits for stochastic errors and coherent errors. We utilize a fully coherent simulation of a fault tolerant quantum error correcting circuit for a $d=3$ Steane and surface code. We find that the output distributions are markedly different for the two error models, showing that no simple mapping between the two error models exists. Coherent errors create very broad and heavy-tailed failure distributions. This suggests that they are susceptible to outlier events and that mean statistics, such as pseudo-threshold estimates, may not provide the key figure of merit. This provides further statistical insight into why coherent errors can be so harmful for quantum error correction. These output probability distributions may also provide a useful metric that can be utilized when optimizing quantum error correcting codes and decoding procedures for purely coherent errors., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

Despite the now vast body of two-dimensional materials under study, bilayer graphene remains unique in two ways: it hosts a simultaneously tunable band gap and electron density; and stems from simple fabrication methods. These two advantages underscore why bilayer graphene is critical as a material for optoelectronic applications. In the work that follows, we calculate the one- and two-photon absorption coefficients for degenerate interband absorption in a graphene bilayer hosting an asymmetry gap and adjustable chemical potential--all at finite temperature. Our analysis is comprehensive, characterizing one- and two-photon absorptive behavior over wide ranges of photon energy, gap, chemical potential, and thermal broadening. The two-photon absorption coefficient for bilayer graphene displays a rich structure as a function of photon energy and band gap due to the existence of multiple absorption pathways and the nontrivial dispersion of the low energy bands. We describe an adiabatic state transfer mechanism that allows for high-fidelity transfer of a microwave quantum state from one cavity to another through an optical fiber. The conversion from microwave frequency to optical frequency is enabled by an optomechanical transducer. The transfer process utilizes a combined dark state of the mechanical oscillator and fiber modes, making it robust against both mechanical and fiber loss. We describe a quantum algorithm that generalizes the quantum linear system algorithm [Harrow et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 150502 (2009)] to arbitrary problem specifications. We develop a state preparation routine that can initialize generic states, show how simple ancilla measurements can be used to calculate many quantities of interest, and integrate a quantum-compatible preconditioner that greatly expands the number of problems that can achieve exponential speedup over classical linear systems solvers. We present theoretical estimates for a high-speed, low-loss, all-optical transistor using a micro-resonator device, whose fields interact evanescently with Rubidium vapor. We use a four-level electromagnetically induced absorption scheme to couple the light fields of the transistor. We show results indicating that a weak control beam can switch a much stronger signal beam, with contrast of greater than 25 dB and loss less than 0.5 dB. The prospect of self-consistent propagation of more than two pulses contemporaneously through multi-resonant media raises open questions: whether soliton solutions exist, and whether a useful generalization of two-level pulse Area can be found. We analyze the effects of partial coherence of ground state preparation on two-pulse propagation in a three-level $\Lambda$ medium, in contrast to previous treastments that have considered the cases of media whose ground states are characterized by probabilities (level populations) or by probability amplitudes (coherent pure states). We present analytic solutions of the Maxwell-Bloch equations, and we extend our analysis with numerical solutions to the same equations. We interpret these solutions in the bright/dark dressed state basis, and show that they describe a population transfer between the bright and dark state. For mixed-state $\Lambda$ media with partial ground state phase coherence the dark state can never be fully populated. This has implications for phase-coherent effects such as pulse matching, coherent population trapping, and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We examine fully coherent two-pulse propagation in a lambda-type medium, under two-photon resonance conditions and including inhomogeneous broadening. We examine both the effects of short pulse preparation and the effects of medium preparation. We contrast cases in which the two pulses have matched envelopes or not, and contrast cases in which ground state coherence is present or not. We find that an extended interpretation of the Area Theorem for single-pulse self-induced transparency (SIT) is able to unify two-pulse propagation scenarios, including some aspects of electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). We present numerical solutions of both three-level and adiabatically reduced two-level density matrix equations and Maxwell's equations, and show that many features of the solutions are quickly interpreted with the aid of analytic solutions that we also provide for restricted cases of pulse shapes and preparation of the medium. In the limit of large one-photon detuning, we show that the two-level equations commonly used are not reliable for pulse Areas in the 2$\pi$ range, which allows puzzling features of previous numerical work to be understood., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures. We treat theoretically the two-pulse plane-wave propagation problem associated with the stimulated Raman process. A strong pump pulse and a weak probe pulse interact self-consistently during mutual propagation through a medium in the three-level lambda configuration. We treat the pulse interaction fully coherently, but take initially incoherent mixed ground states to describe the medium. We present analytic pulse envelope solutions to the nonlinear evolution equations, and then test them numerically. We show that the entire process can be interpreted consistently as a three-regime evolution, in which the first and last regimes display behavior quantitatively the same as self-induced transparency.
