Abstract: Periodontal diseases are considered a worldwide public health problem, owing to their high prevalence in developed and developing countries. Periodontitis may lead to tooth loss, which can impact oral health-related quality of life. Gingivitis and periodontitis have been extensively studied regarding their etiopathogenesis, epidemiology, prevention and treatment outcomes. However, most of these aspects are studied and discussed globally, which may hamper a clear interpretation of the findings and the design of effective plans of action for specific regions or populations. For example, in Latin America, epidemiological data about the distribution of periodontal diseases is still scarce, mainly when it comes to nationwide representative samples. This Consensus aimed to address the following topics related to periodontal diseases in Latin America: a) The impact of the global burden of periodontal diseases on health: a global reality; b) Periodontal diseases in Latin America; c) Strategies for the prevention of periodontal diseases in Latin America; d) Problems associated with diagnosis of periodontal conditions and possible solutions for Latin America; e) Treatment of Periodontitis. This consensus will help to increase awareness about diagnosis, prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases, in the context of Latin American countries.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged survival of patients under HAART has resulted in new demands for assisted reproductive technologies. HIV serodiscordant couples wish to make use of assisted reproduction techniques in order to avoid viral transmission to the partner or to the newborn. It is therefore essential to test the effectiveness of techniques aimed at reducing HIV and HCV loads in infected semen using molecular biology tests. METHODS: After seminal analysis, semen samples from 20 coinfected patients were submitted to cell fractioning and isolation of motile spermatozoa by density gradient centrifugation and swim-up. HIV and HCV RNA detection tests were performed with RNA obtained from sperm, seminal plasma and total semen. RESULTS: In pre-washing semen, HIV RNA was detected in 100% of total semen samples, whereas HCV RNA was concomitantly amplified in only one specimen. Neither HIV nor HCV were detected either in the swim-up or in the post-washing semen fractions. CONCLUSIONS: Reduction of HIV and/or HCV shedding in semen by density gradient centrifugation followed by swim-up is an efficient method. These findings lead us to believe that, although semen is rarely found to contain HCV, semen processing is highly beneficial for HIV/HCV coinfected individuals.O aumento da sobrevida dos pacientes que utilizam terapêutica antiretroviral altamente eficaz (HAART- Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy) trouxe uma nova demanda de casais sorodiscordantes que desejam filhos. Como esses casais não podem abandonar o uso de preservativos, torna-se indispensável tratar o sêmen infectado com técnicas laboratoriais eficazes que além de isolar os melhores espermatozóides, reduzam a carga viral do HIV e HCV a níveis indetectáveis. Para isso, são utilizadas técnicas de semen washing, associadas a testes ultra sensíveis de biologia molecular. Após análise seminal, sêmen de 20 pacientes co-infectados HIV-HCV foram submetidos a fracionamento celular e isolamento de espermatozóides móveis através de método de densidade de gradiente descontínuo e swim-up. Posteriormente, testes para detecção do RNA do HIV e HCV foram aplicados nos sêmens totais e frações seminais obtidas. Em fase pré semen washing, o HIV foi detectado em 100% dos semens totais. Contrariamente, o HCV foi detectado em apenas uma amostra. Em fase pós semen washing, o HIV e HCV não foram detectados em nenhuma das frações seminais. A redução do HIV e do HCV através de semen washing mostra-se um método eficaz a indivíduos co-infectados HIV-HCV, apesar do encontro do HCV no sêmen ser raro.

Data from the routine surveillance systems have been extensively used to estimate the incidence of dengue. However, routine surveillance data frequently underestimate the diseases’ incidence. Underreporting of dengue cases is related to the varying spectrum of its clinical presentation, with a large proportion of mild and asymptomatic infections, to its unspecific signs and symptoms, to the limitations of access to health care, and to the performance of the surveillance system itself [1–3].In order to obtain accurate figures on dengue incidence, a cohort of children and adolescents was set up and followed during four years. The incidence of reported cases was used as a reference for the sample size calculation, which was stratified by age groups. A two-stage procedure was used to select the participants: census tracts were randomly selected, and within each one, a pre-determined number of children of each age group was randomly selected.The parents or legal guardians of the participating children and adolescents provided a written informed consent. In the first home visit, they responded to a questionnaire containing data on socio-demographic characteristics, housing, access to water, sewage, and garbage collection. Also, during the first visit a blood sample of the participating child/adolescent was collected for dengue baseline serology. Beginning in the week after the enrolment, the parent or legal guardian that was designated in the first visit received weekly phone calls for fever surveillance. If the child/adolescent had fever during the week, a nurse was dispatched to the family's home to collect more detailed data on the fever episode and collect a blood sample for dengue diagnosis (IgG, IgM, NS1 and PCR). If the dengue diagnosis was confirmed, a medical appointment was scheduled, and another blood sample for confirmatory tests was collected. It was also agreed that in every anniversary of their participation, they would receive another visit for a blood collection for dengue serology, regardless if they had a fever episode or a confirmed dengue diagnosis during the previous year.This article contains the description of the cohort's dataset. It is associated with the article published in Acta Tropica, under the title “A cohort study to assess the incidence of dengue, Brazil, 2014–2018” [4]. The associated article focused on the seroprevalence and incidence of dengue, and explored some associations between both outcomes and some explanatory variables.
