paper assesses the effects on local government practice of attempts by the planning profession in England to reinvent its role and redefine the disciplinary field by promoting a shift from land-use to spatial planning. Drawing on work that investigated the rationale for the move to a spatial planning approach and two case studies of emerging practice in the south-east of England in 2006-8, the article explores the 'cultural work' required to realise spatial planning, i.e. its capacity to reshape the knowledge, social relations and identities of public sector planning practice. It concludes that the promotion of spatial planning has highlighted enduring tensions within the planning-professional project, and discusses what this means for the future of the profession in the public sector. The role of US planners is increasingly as mediators amongst the different interest groups. They have a vital role in ensuring urban development serves the needs of the public, the authorities and other interested groups. Planning academies must ensure the work of practitioners is recognized along with academic study. Collaboration between the two approaches will assist planners in dealing with change. It is important for planners to be aware of the role of the public in planning decisions.

City planners can improve their speaking techniques through awareness, practice, and control. The first step to successful speaking is for the speakers to know their audience and what their own goals are. Planning a speech is easier when the presentation is written out. After writing out their presentations, speakers should determine appropriate techniques for adding appeal to their presentation such as visual aids. Finally, speakers should practice their speeches in private.

This analysis of the communicative acts of a senior planner during two episodes in a working day contributes to the study of planning as an interactive practice. The types and forms of knowledge used and the communicative work undertaken are examined. The paper identifies the way power is exercised through communication. It shows planners how to make their expertise available and transparent to the clients and communities they serve. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
