Abstract: Computational models of language are having an increasing impact in understanding the neural bases of language processing in humans. A recent model of cortical dynamics based on reservoir computing was able to account for temporal aspects of human narrative processing as revealed by fMRI. In this context the current research introduces a form of structured reservoir computing, where network dynamics are further constrained by the connectivity architecture in order to begin to explain large scale hierarchical network properties of human cortical activity during narrative comprehension. Cortical processing takes place at different time scales depending on the position in a “hierarchy” from posterior sensory input areas to higher level associative frontal cortical areas. This phenomena is likely related to the cortical connectivity architecture. Recent studies have identified heterogeneity in this posterior-anterior hierarchy, with certain frontal associative areas displaying a faster narrative integration response than much more posterior areas. We hypothesize that these discontinuities can be due to white matter connectivity that would create shortcuts from fast sensory areas to distant frontal areas. To test this hypothesis, we analysed the white matter connectivity of these areas and discovered clear connectivity patterns in accord with our hypotheses. Based on these observations we performed simulations using reservoir networks with connectivity patterns structured with an exponential distance rule, yielding the sensory-associative hierarchy. We then introduce connectivity short-cuts corresponding to those observed in human anatomy, resulting in frontal areas with unusually fast narrative processing. Using structured reservoir computing we confirmed the hypothesis that topographic position in a cortical hierarchy can be dominated by long distance connections that can bring frontal areas closer to the sensory periphery.

Abstract: At the beginning of 2020, COVID-19 became a global problem. Despite all the efforts to emphasize the relevance of preventive measures, not everyone adhered to them. Thus, learning more about the characteristics determining attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic is crucial to improving future interventions. In this study, we applied machine learning on the multinational data collected by the International Collaboration on the Social and Moral Psychology of COVID-19 (N = 51,404) to test the predictive efficacy of constructs from social, moral, cognitive, and personality psychology, as well as socio-demographic factors, in the attitudinal and behavioral responses to the pandemic. The results point to several valuable insights. Internalized moral identity provided the most consistent predictive contribution—individuals perceiving moral traits as central to their self-concept reported higher adherence to preventive measures. Similar results were found for morality as cooperation, symbolized moral identity, self-control, open-mindedness, and collective narcissism, while the inverse relationship was evident for the endorsement of conspiracy theories. However, we also found a non-neglible variability in the explained variance and predictive contributions with respect to macro-level factors such as the pandemic stage or cultural region. Abstract: The quantum anomalous Hall effect1,2 is a fundamental transport response of a topological insulator in zero magnetic field. Its physical origin is a result of an intrinsically inverted electronic band structure and ferromagnetism3, and its most important manifestation is the dissipationless flow of chiral charge currents at the edges of the system4, a property that has the potential to transform future quantum electronics5,6. Here, we report a Berry-curvature-driven4,7 anomalous Hall regime at temperatures of several Kelvin in the magnetic topological bulk crystals in which Mn ions self-organize into a period-ordered MnBi2Te4/Bi2Te3 superlattice. Robust ferromagnetism of the MnBi2Te4 monolayers opens a surface gap8–10, and when the Fermi level is tuned to be within this gap, the anomalous Hall conductance reaches an e2/h quantization plateau, which is a clear indication of chiral transport through the edge states. The quantization in this regime is not obstructed by the bulk conduction channels and therefore should be present in a broad family of topological magnets. A three-dimensional topological magnetic superlattice structure exhibits the quantum anomalous Hall effect when the Fermi energy is tuned into the correct energy window.

Abstract: The mitochondrial respiratory chain, formed by five protein complexes, utilizes energy from catabolic processes to synthesize ATP. Complex I, the first and the largest protein complex of the chain, harvests electrons from NADH to reduce quinone, while pumping protons across the mitochondrial membrane. Detailed knowledge of the working principle of such coupled charge-transfer processes remains, however, fragmentary due to bottlenecks in understanding redox-driven conformational transitions and their interplay with the hydrated proton pathways. Complex I from Thermus thermophilus encases 16 subunits with nine iron-sulfur clusters, reduced by electrons from NADH. Here, employing the latest crystal structure of T. thermophilus complex I, we have used microsecond-scale molecular dynamics simulations to study the chemo-mechanical coupling between redox changes of the iron-sulfur clusters and conformational transitions across complex I. First, we identify the redox switches within complex I, which allosterically couple the dynamics of the quinone binding pocket to the site of NADH reduction. Second, our free-energy calculations reveal that the affinity of the quinone, specifically menaquinone, for the binding-site is higher than that of its reduced, menaquinol form-a design essential for menaquinol release. Remarkably, the barriers to diffusive menaquinone dynamics are lesser than that of the more ubiquitous ubiquinone, and the naphthoquinone headgroup of the former furnishes stronger binding interactions with the pocket, favoring menaquinone for charge transport in T. thermophilus. Our computations are consistent with experimentally validated mutations and hierarchize the key residues into three functional classes, identifying new mutation targets. Third, long-range hydrogen-bond networks connecting the quinone-binding site to the transmembrane subunits are found to be responsible for proton pumping. Put together, the simulations reveal the molecular design principles linking redox reactions to quinone turnover to proton translocation in complex I.

Abstract: The extremely thick sedimentary sequence in the Qaidam Basin, northeastern Tibetan Plateau (TP) is closely related to the uplift of the TP. Due to the scarcity of minerals that can be dated continuously, little is known about the isotopic responses of the minerals in this area to the changes in the weathering and sources over a long time period. A 938.5-m long core (magnetostratigraphic age of ∼ 2.8–0.1 Ma) was drilled in the western Qaidam Basin in 2008. The mineralogy and isotopic compositions of gypsum in this core were investigated. The gypsum recorded the primary information about the brine that formed during ∼ 2.8–0.1 Ma. The variations in the Sr isotopes (0.709817–0.714473, average of 0.711249) and Nd (0.512114–0.512614, average of 0.512184) of the gypsum samples suggest that the weathering products of the rocks in the Kunlun and Altyn mountains (Mts) likely exerted a strong control on the Sr-Nd isotopes of the lakes. The climate and the Sr content/isotopic compositions of the gypsum samples were affected by the regional tectonic activities throughout the evolution of the paleolake since 2.8 Ma. The results of this study demonstrate that Sr-Nd isotopes are useful tools for investigating the origins of evaporite deposits and the interactions between tectonic activities and climate change.

Abstract: International audience; Heart rate has natural fluctuations that are typically ascribed to autonomic function. Recent evidence suggests that conscious processing can affect the timing of the heartbeat. We hypothesized that heart rate is modulated by conscious processing and therefore dependent on attentional focus. To test this, we leverage the observation that neural processes synchronize between subjects by presenting an identical narrative stimulus. As predicted, we find significant inter-subject correlation of heart rate (ISC-HR) when subjects are presented with an auditory or audiovisual narrative. Consistent with our hypothesis, we find that ISC-HR is reduced when subjects are distracted from the narrative, and higher ISC-HR predicts better recall of the narrative. Finally, patients with disorders of consciousness have lower ISC-HR, as compared to healthy individuals. We conclude that heart rate fluctuations are partially driven by conscious processing, depend on attentional state, and may represent a simple metric to assess conscious state in unresponsive patients.

Abstract: International audience; This study examines the accumulation of yeast cells at the membrane surface and the morphology of the formed cake through microscale monitoring and analysis of the microfiltration process. An original dead-end microfiltration device with a model membrane was designed and coupled with an optical imaging system to provide direct observation from the side, allowing in-situ real time study of the filtration operation (Valencia et al. 2020 [1]). Here, the deposition of yeast cells, monodispersed and polydispersed particles, in the same size range that yeast cells, was analyzed. Image processing was used to perform a quantitative characterization of cake morphological properties in terms of height, porosity, permeability, Kozeny coefficient and specific resistance. The cakes formed by monodispersed spherical and non-spherical rigid particles exhibit a similar incompressible behavior with higher porosity than yeast cakes, with mean porosity values of 0.38 for the rigid particles and 0.15 for the yeast at the end of the filtration run, respectively. The cake obtained by the microfiltration of a model suspension of polydispersed particles close to yeast size and shape is more compact (porosity of 0.29) and less permeable. However, polydispersity does not fully explain yeast cake properties, in particular its compressibility. Indeed, the yeast cake has a high compressibility index n = 1.1, which is reflected in a significant volume expansion of the yeast cake after transmembrane pressure was removed.

Abstract: Seasonal and interannual variations in global wetland area are a strong driver of fluctuations in global methane (CH4) emissions. Current maps of global wetland extent vary in their wetland definition, causing substantial disagreement between and large uncertainty in estimates of wetland methane emissions. To reconcile these differences for large-scale wetland CH4 modeling, we developed the global Wetland Area and Dynamics for Methane Modeling (WAD2M) version 1.0 dataset at a ∼ 25 km resolution at the Equator (0.25∘) at a monthly time step for 2000–2018. WAD2M combines a time series of surface inundation based on active and passive microwave remote sensing at a coarse resolution with six static datasets that discriminate inland waters, agriculture, shoreline, and non-inundated wetlands. We excluded all permanent water bodies (e.g., lakes, ponds, rivers, and reservoirs), coastal wetlands (e.g., mangroves and sea grasses), and rice paddies to only represent spatiotemporal patterns of inundated and non-inundated vegetated wetlands. Globally, WAD2M estimates the long-term maximum wetland area at 13.0×106 km2 (13.0 Mkm2), which can be divided into three categories: mean annual minimum of inundated and non-inundated wetlands at 3.5 Mkm2, seasonally inundated wetlands at 4.0 Mkm2 (mean annual maximum minus mean annual minimum), and intermittently inundated wetlands at 5.5 Mkm2 (long-term maximum minus mean annual maximum). WAD2M shows good spatial agreements with independent wetland inventories for major wetland complexes, i.e., the Amazon Basin lowlands and West Siberian lowlands, with Cohen's kappa coefficient of 0.54 and 0.70 respectively among multiple wetland products. By evaluating the temporal variation in WAD2M against modeled prognostic inundation (i.e., TOPMODEL) and satellite observations of inundation and soil moisture, we show that it adequately represents interannual variation as well as the effect of El Niño–Southern Oscillation on global wetland extent. This wetland extent dataset will improve estimates of wetland CH4 fluxes for global-scale land surface modeling. Abstract: MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}/$(Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$)$_{n}$ materials system has recently generated strong interest as a natural platform for realization of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state. The system is magnetically much better ordered than substitutionally doped materials, however, the detrimental effects of certain disorders are becoming increasingly acknowledged. Here, from compiling structural, compositional, and magnetic metrics of disorder in ferromagnetic MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}/$(Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$)$_{n}$ it is found that migration of Mn between MnBi$_{2}$T$e_{4}$ septuple layers (SLs) and otherwise non-magnetic Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ quintuple layers (QLs) has systemic consequences - it induces ferromagnetic coupling of Mn-depleted SLs with Mn-doped QLs, seen in ferromagnetic resonance as an acoustic and optical resonance mode of the two coupled spin subsystems. Even for a large SL separation (n $\gtrsim$ 4 QLs) the structure cannot be considered as a stack of uncoupled two-dimensional layers. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory studies show that Mn disorder within an SL causes delocalization of electron wavefunctions and a change of the surface bandstructure as compared to the ideal MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}/$(Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$)$_{n}$. Abstract: Biodiversity accumulates hierarchically by means of ecological and evolutionary processes and feedbacks. Within ecological communities drift, dispersal, speciation, and selection operate simultaneously to shape patterns of biodiversity. Reconciling the relative importance of these is hindered by current models and inference methods, which tend to focus on a subset of processes and their resulting predictions. Here we introduce Massive Eco-evolutionary Synthesis Simulations (MESS), a unified mechanistic model of community assembly, rooted in classic island biogeography theory, which makes temporally explicit joint predictions across three biodiversity data axes: i) species richness and abundances; ii) population genetic diversities; and iii) trait variation in a phylogenetic context. Using simulations we demonstrate that each data axis captures information at different timescales, and that integrating these axes enables discriminating among previously unidentifiable community assembly models. MESS is unique in generating predictions of community-scale genetic diversity, and in characterizing joint patterns of genetic diversity, abundance, and trait values. MESS unlocks the full potential for investigation of biodiversity processes using multi-dimensional community data including a genetic component, such as might be produced by contemporary eDNA or metabarcoding studies. Abstract: Highlights • We analysed estimates of effect of long working hours on alcohol use and disorders. • Overall body of evidence was of low certainty. • Exposure to long working hours potentially increased alcohol consumption. • The effect of long working hours on risky drinking is unclear. • We found no eligible studies on the effect on alcohol use disorder., Background The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are developing Joint Estimates of the work-related burden of disease and injury (WHO/ILO Joint Estimates), with contributions from a large network of experts. Evidence from mechanistic data suggests that exposure to long working hours may increase alcohol consumption and cause alcohol use disorder. In this paper, we present a systematic review and meta-analysis of parameters for estimating the number of deaths and disability-adjusted life years from alcohol consumption and alcohol use disorder that are attributable to exposure to long working hours, for the development of the WHO/ILO Joint Estimates. Objectives We aimed to systematically review and meta-analyse estimates of the effect of exposure to long working hours (three categories: 41–48, 49–54 and ≥55 h/week), compared with exposure to standard working hours (35–40 h/week), on alcohol consumption, risky drinking (three outcomes: prevalence, incidence and mortality) and alcohol use disorder (three outcomes: prevalence, incidence and mortality). Data sources We developed and published a protocol, applying the Navigation Guide as an organizing systematic review framework where feasible. We searched electronic bibliographic databases for potentially relevant records from published and unpublished studies, including the WHO International Clinical Trials Register, Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, and CISDOC on 30 June 2018. Searches on PubMed were updated on 18 April 2020. Abstract: Robustness to disorder - the defining property of any topological state - has been mostly tested in low-disorder translationally-invariant materials systems where the protecting underlying symmetry, such as time reversal, is preserved. The ultimate disorder limits to topological protection are still unknown, however, a number of theories predict that even in the amorphous state a quantized conductance might yet reemerge. Here we report a directly detected robust spin response in structurally disordered thin films of the topological material Sb2Te3 free of extrinsic magnetic dopants, which we controllably tune from a strong (amorphous) to a weak crystalline) disorder state. The magnetic signal onsets at a surprisingly high temperature (~ 200 K) and eventually ceases within the crystalline state. We demonstrate that in a strongly disordered state disorder-induced spin correlations dominate the transport of charge - they engender a spin memory phenomenon, generated by the nonequilibrium charge currents controlled by localized spins. The negative magnetoresistance (MR) in the extensive spin-memory phase space is isotropic. Within the crystalline state, it transitions into a positive MR corresponding to the weak antilocalization (WAL) quantum interference effect, with a 2D scaling characteristic of the topological state. Our findings demonstrate that these nonequilibrium currents set a disorder threshold to the topological state; they lay out a path to tunable spin-dependent charge transport and point to new possibilities of spin control by disorder engineering of topological materials

Abstract: The mitochondrial respiratory chain formed by five protein complexes utilizes energy from catabolic processes to synthesize ATP. Complex I, the first and the largest protein complex of the chain, harvests electrons from NADH to reduce quinone, while pumping protons across the mitochondrial membrane. Detailed knowledge of the working principle of such coupled charge-transfer processes remains fragmentary due to bottlenecks arising from large conformational transitions and their interplay with the hydrated proton pathways. A recent study has reported the crystallographic structure of complex I from Thermus thermophilus, encasing 16 subunits with 9 iron-sulfur clusters, which are reduced by electrons from NADH. Here, we have used large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to study the chemo-mechanical coupling between redox changes of the iron-sulfur clusters and conformational transitions across complex I. First, we identify the redox switches within complex I, which couple the dynamics of the quinone binding pocket to the site of NADH reduction. Second, our free-energy calculations reveal that the affinity of the quinone, specifically menaquinone, for the binding-site is higher than that of its reduced, menaquinol form – a design essential for menaquinol release. Third, long-range hydrogen-bond networks connecting the quinone-binding site to the TM subunits are found to be responsible for proton pumping. Random insertion of molecular oxygen in reduced complex I illuminates an enhanced access to the iron-sulfur clusters, conducive to the formation of reactive oxygen species. Our simulations reveal molecular design principles linking redox reactions and proton translocation in complex I.

In this work, we use a novelset of spherical-harmonics rotation invariant indices, recently proposed in the literature. We demonstrate thatthese 12 invariants capture all the information provided by DTI. But in addition, they capture differences incomplex WM, beyond DTI measures. This combined with the clinical feasibility of the method, paves the wayfor them to be used as better markers of brain injury.

Abstract: International audience; One of the most important challenges in the study of topological insulators is the realization of materials that are really insulating in the bulk, in order to emphasize quantum transport in the protected surface states. Irradiation with electron beams is a very promising approach toward this goal. By studying a series of samples of the prototype 3D topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 , we show that while the topological properties of Dirac surface states are preserved after electron irradiation, their relaxation dynamics are very sensitive to the related modifications of the bulk properties. Using time-and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we can reveal two distinct relaxation regimes after optical excitation for non-irradiated and irradiated samples. While the faster regime, corresponding to the first few picoseconds, presents a similar temporal evolution of the photoexcited population for all studied samples, the slower regime is strongly influenced by the controlled generation of defects in the bulk lattice. By adjusting the irradiation parameters in this class of materials, one can thus not only change the bulk transport properties but also tune the ultrafast response of the topological surface states.

Abstract: The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 2,143 new measurements from 709 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on Machine Learning, and one on Spectroscopy of Light Meson Resonances. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 97 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 23 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. Abstract: International audience; TAn intriguing approach to modulating neural activity is to combine neuroimaging with brain stimulation (Bergmann et al. 2016). However, lacking is a general formalism for how to employ measurements of neural activity to design stimulation parameters that optimally modulate the sources of recorded activity. One particularly compelling combination is electroencephalography (EEG) with transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), mirror-symmetric processes related by electromagnetic reciprocity. Here we develop a general formalism for combined EEG-TES, focusing on the problem of how to select the applied TES currents such that the source of an EEG activation is targeted by the stimulation. We derive a closed-form expression for the TES electrode configuration that generates an electric field most closely matched to the activation pattern. Importantly, we show that source localization of the targeted activation is not required, and that EEG sources may be targeted using only their projections on the scalp. In order to validate the proposed approach, we conduct Boundary Element Model (BEM) simulations using a realistic, MRI-based human head model.

Abstract: International audience; Previous studies showed that a temporal overlapping of the fixation-target with the saccade-target onset induces a shift of saccade reaction time distributions towards longer values. Here we present a series of experiments probing how an overlap paradigm, combined with the manipulation of stimuli durations, energy and transient changes might modulate saccadic reaction time distributions. We recorded saccadic reaction time in four participants in six experiments in which a saccade-target appeared at a random amplitude after a fixation period. First we parametrically manipulated the duration of the overlap using a range of intervals (from 0 to 200 ms). In a second experiment we probed the interaction of various foreperiod intervals (i.e. the duration of the fixation period prior to saccade-target onset) and overlap using two overlap intervals (20 or 140 ms). In two additional experiments we manipulated either the stimuli sizes or their contrasts in overlap paradigms (20 or 140 ms). Lastly, we introduced a visual transient during the overlap interval via two manipulations (both with a range of SOA): either a distractor ring appeared around the fixation-target, or dynamic random noise replaced the fixation-target. Results show reliable modifications in the latency distributions depending on the overlap interval as well as idiosyncratic differences. Furthermore, all our additional experimental manipulations also affected the latency distributions revealing strong interacting inhibitory processes. We conclude that the effects of overlap intervals may combine with the influence of other stimuli properties to produce strong effects on decision process.

Abstract published in Neurophysiologie Clinique 49(3):191, June 2019; International audience; Background: tDCS is a widely investigated noninvasive neuromodulation technic in neurological and psychiatric disorders. Some studies demonstrate the effect of tDCS on interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) (Fregni et al., 2006).Objectives: The objective of our study was to investigate the tDCS effect on IED (frequency of occurrence and amplitudes) in intracerebral structures thanks to SEEG investigation.Methods: Two patients with focal drug-resistant epilepsy were included: one medial and one lateral temporal lobe epilepsy. In average, they were implanted with 15 SEEG electrodes. Thanks to the SEEG recordings (5 days), epileptologists localized the irritative zone. The experiment was divided in 3 sessions: 20 min sham, then 20 min tDCS (−1 mA) and finaly 20 min sham. The amplitudes and the number of occurrences were analyzed. The results were compared between the sessions.Results: For the medial temporal lobe study, 64 and 33 IED were detected respectively before and after tDCS. The averaged amplitudes in the hippocampus were respectively 742 ± 422 μV and 152 ± 43 μV correspond to a 20% decrease (P < 0.001; Mann–Whitney U test). For the lateral temporal lobe study, we detected respectively 192 and 165 discharges. The averaged amplitudes in the superior temporal gyrus were respectively 136 ± 55 μV and 117 ± 36 μV correspond to a 14% decrease (P < 0.001; Mann–Whitney U test).Conclusion: In this study, we demonstrated that the cathodal tDCS can reduce the number and the amplitude of epileptic discharges in intracerebral structures. The strength of this study is related to the simultaneous SEEG recordings with non-invasive tDCS and the in-vivo human brain investigation (deep and superficial).

Abstract: A model evaluation approach is proposed in which weather and climate prediction models are analyzed along a Pacific Ocean cross section, from the stratocumulus regions off the coast of California, across the shallow convection dominated trade winds, to the deep convection regions of the ITCZ—the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment Cloud System Study/Working Group on Numerical Experimentation (GCSS/WGNE) Pacific Cross-Section Intercomparison (GPCI). The main goal of GPCI is to evaluate and help understand and improve the representation of tropical and subtropical cloud processes in weather and climate prediction models. In this paper, a detailed analysis of cloud regime transitions along the cross section from the subtropics to the tropics for the season June–July–August of 1998 is presented. This GPCI study confirms many of the typical weather and climate prediction model problems in the representation of clouds: underestimation of clouds in the stratocumulus regime by most models with the corresponding consequences in terms of shortwave radiation biases; overestimation of clouds by the 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) in the deep tropics (in particular) with the corresponding impact in the outgoing longwave radiation; large spread between the different models in terms of cloud cover, liquid water path and shortwave radiation; significant differences between the models in terms of vertical cross sections of cloud properties (in particular), vertical velocity, and relative humidity. An alternative analysis of cloud cover mean statistics is proposed where sharp gradients in cloud cover along the GPCI transect are taken into account. This analysis shows that the negative cloud bias of some models and ERA-40 in the stratocumulus regions [as compared to the first International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP)] is associated not only with lower values of cloud cover in these regimes, but also with a stratocumulus-to-cumulus transition that occurs too early along the trade wind Lagrangian trajectory. Histograms of cloud cover along the cross section differ significantly between models. Some models exhibit a quasi-bimodal structure with cloud cover being either very large (close to 100%) or very small, while other models show a more continuous transition. The ISCCP observations suggest that reality is in-between these two extreme examples. These different patterns reflect the diverse nature of the cloud, boundary layer, and convection parameterizations in the participating weather and climate prediction models.

Abstract: Use of recombinant insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) as a treatment for primary IGF-1 deficiency in children has become increasingly common. When untreated, primary IGF-1 deficiency may lead to a range of metabolic disorders, including lipid abnormalities, insulin resistance, and decreased bone density. To date, results of this therapy are considered encouraging; however, our understanding of the role played by IGF-1 during development remains limited. Studies on long-term treatment with recombinant IGF-1 in both children and animals are few. Here, we used two novel transgenic mouse strains to test the long-term effects of elevated circulating IGF-1 on body size and skeletal development. Overexpression of the rat igf1 transgene in livers of mice with otherwise normal IGF-1 expression (HIT mice) resulted in approximately threefold increases in serum IGF-1 levels throughout growth, as well as greater body mass and enhanced skeletal size, architecture, and mechanical properties. When the igf1 transgene was overexpressed in livers of igf1 null mice (KO-HIT), the comparably elevated serum IGF-1 failed to overcome growth and skeletal deficiencies during neonatal and early postnatal growth. However, between 4 and 16 weeks of age, increased serum IGF-1 fully compensated for the absence of locally produced IGF-1 because body weights and lengths of KO-HIT mice became comparable with controls. Furthermore, micro-computed tomography (µCT) analysis revealed that early deficits in skeletal structure of KO-HIT mice were restored to control levels by adulthood. Our data indicate that in the absence of tissue igf1 gene expression, maintaining long-term elevations in serum IGF-1 is sufficient to establish normal body size, body composition, and both skeletal architecture and mechanical function. © 2010 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Abstract: International audience; The flow of dry and wet granular media is investigated in a Couette geometry using magnetic resonance imaging in order to test the applicability of the “fluidity model” for nonlocality in these materials. Local volume fraction measurements show that the systems become heterogeneous during flow. We find that the nonlocal rheology of suspensions can be correlated using the fluidity model, but the length scale that emerges is not a material property and the model cannot be used for predictive purposes. Rather, the suspension behavior is fully explained as a consequence of stress-driven particle migration and the resulting concentration gradient. The conclusion is less strong for the dry granular system, but it appears likely that the apparent nonlocal behavior is simply due to the formation of a shear band caused by granular dilatancy.

Abstract: We define two general classes of nonabelian sandpile models on directed trees (or arborescences) as models of nonequilibrium statistical phenomena. These models have the property that sand grains can enter only through specified reservoirs, unlike the well-known abelian sandpile model. In the Trickle-down sandpile model, sand grains are allowed to move one at a time. For this model, we show that the stationary distribution is of product form. In the Landslide sandpile model, all the grains at a vertex topple at once, and here we prove formulas for all eigenvalues, their multiplicities, and the rate of convergence to stationarity. Abstract: We develop a general theory of Markov chains realizable as random walks on $\mathscr R$-trivial monoids. It provides explicit and simple formulas for the eigenvalues of the transition matrix, for multiplicities of the eigenvalues via M\"obius inversion along a lattice, a condition for diagonalizability of the transition matrix and some techniques for bounding the mixing time. In addition, we discuss several examples, such as Toom-Tsetlin models, an exchange walk for finite Coxeter groups, as well as examples previously studied by the authors, such as nonabelian sandpile models and the promotion Markov chain on posets. Abstract: International audience; The rapid point-to-point movements of the eyes called saccades are the most commonly made movement by humans, yet differ from nearly every other type of motor output in that they are completed too quickly to be adjusted during their execution by visual feedback. Saccadic accuracy remains quite high over a lifetime despite inevitable changes to the physical structures controlling the eyes, indicating that the oculomotor system actively monitors and adjusts motor commands to achieve consistent behavioral production. Indeed, it seems that beyond the ability to compensate for slow, age-related bodily changes, saccades can be modified following traumatic injury or pathology that affects their production, or in response to more short-term systematic alterations to post-saccadic visual feedback in a laboratory setting. These forms of plasticity rely on the visual detection of accuracy errors by a unified set of mechanisms that support the process known as saccade adaptation. Saccade adaptation has been mostly studied as a phenomenon in its own right, outside of motor learning in general. Here, we highlight the commonalities between eye and arm movement adaptation by reviewing the literature across these fields wherever there are compelling overlapping theories or data. Recent exciting findings are challenging previous interpretations of the underlying mechanisms of saccade adaptation with the incorporation of concepts including prediction, reinforcement and contextual learning. We review the emerging ideas and evidence with particular emphasis on the important contributions made by Josh Wallman in this sphere over the past 15 years.

Abstract: International audience; A global intercomparison of 12 monthly mean land surface heat flux products for the period 1993-1995 is presented. The intercomparison includes some of the first emerging global satellite-based products (developed at Paris Observatory, Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, University of California Berkeley, University of Maryland, and Princeton University) and examples of fluxes produced by reanalyses (ERA-Interim, MERRA, NCEP-DOE) and off-line land surface models (GSWP-2, GLDAS CLM/Mosaic/Noah). An intercomparison of the global latent heat flux (Qle) annual means shows a spread of ˜20 W m-2 (all-product global average of ˜45 W m-2). A similar spread is observed for the sensible (Qh) and net radiative (Rn) fluxes. In general, the products correlate well with each other, helped by the large seasonal variability and common forcing data for some of the products. Expected spatial distributions related to the major climatic regimes and geographical features are reproduced by all products. Nevertheless, large Qle and Qh absolute differences are also observed. The fluxes were spatially averaged for 10 vegetation classes. The larger Qle differences were observed for the rain forest but, when normalized by mean fluxes, the differences were comparable to other classes. In general, the correlations between Qle and Rn were higher for the satellite-based products compared with the reanalyses and off-line models. The fluxes were also averaged for 10 selected basins. The seasonality was generally well captured by all products, but large differences in the flux partitioning were observed for some products and basins.

Abstract: International audience; We present an experimental study of disordered packings of deformable spheres. Fluorescent hydrogel spheres immersed in water together with a tomography technique enabled the imaging of the three-dimensional arrangement. The mechanical behavior of single spheres subjected to compression is first examined. Then the properties of packings of a randomized collection of deformable spheres in a box with a moving lid are tested. The transition to a state where the packing withstands finite stresses before yielding is observed. Starting from random packed states, the power law dependence of the normal force versus packing fraction or strain at different velocities is quantified. Furthermore, a compression-decompression sequence at low velocities resulted in rearrangements of the spheres. At larger packing fractions, a saturation of the mean coordination number took place, indicating the deformation and faceting of the spheres.

Abstract: International audience; Given their strong interaction with both climate and the carbon cycle, wetlands and surface waters need to be parameterized in global general circulation models. For this purpose, a new simple flooding river scheme is proposed and evaluated over South America. The flood dynamics is described through the coupling between the ISBA land surface model and the TRIP river routing model including a prognostic flood reservoir. This reservoir fills when the river height exceeds a critical value and vice versa. The reservoir interacts with the soil hydrology through infiltration and with the overlying atmosphere through precipitation interception and free water surface evaporation. The model is tested in off-line mode using the 10-year ISLSCP-2 atmospheric forcing. The evaluation is made against satellite-derived inundation estimates as well as in situ river discharge observations. Besides a basin-scale increase in annual surface evaporation, the results show improved monthly discharges over the Amazon and Parana rivers, as well as a reasonable agreement between the simulated flooded areas and satellite-derived inundation estimates.

Abstract: International audience; We have previously shown that when a stimulus consisting of two concentric rings moves, saccade latencies are much longer (by 150 ms) when attention is directed to the larger ring than to the smaller ring. Here, we investigated whether this effect can be explained by a deferral of the “cost” of making a saccade while the target remains inside the attentional field, or by purely visual factors (eccentricity or contrast). We found 1) latencies were shorter when attention was directed to small features irrespective of retinal eccentricity; 2) saccade latency distributions were systematically determined by the ratio between the amplitude of the stimulus step and the diameter of the attended ring: stimulus steps that were larger than the attended ring resulted in short latencies, whereas steps smaller than the attended ring resulted in proportionally longer and more variable latencies; 3) this effect was not seen in manual reaction times to the same target movement; and 4) suprathreshold changes in the contrast of targets, mimicking possible attentional effects on perceived contrast and saliency, had little effect on latency. We argue that the spatial scale of attention determines the urgency of saccade motor preparation processes by changing the rate and rate variability of the underlying decision signal, to defer the cost of saccades that result in little visual benefit.

Abstract: International audience; Using a multi-satellite method, employing passive and active microwave along with visible and infrared observations developed to estimate monthly inundation extent at global scale, this study investigates the response of river discharge to seasonal flood change in the large Siberian watersheds. The seasonal cycle and variations of inundation extent over the Ob, the Yenissey, and the Lena basins for the period 1993-2000 show different spatial and temporal behaviors due to different climate and permafrost conditions. Using in-situ discharges collected at the outlets of the three basins, we analyze and quantify the relationships between the river streamflow and the monthly satellite-derived inundation extent during the spring/summer periods. Furthermore, we analyze extreme (high/low) streamflow cases for some years and the associated inundation conditions for the three watersheds and link these cases with other climatic parameters such as the snow water equivalent, temperatures, and precipitation. The results of this study demonstrate that the monthly multi-satellite-derived inundation dataset brings a new useful tool for better understanding both the streamflow processes and the description of the snow-inundation-runoff relations in data scarce areas like the remote Arctic river basins.

Abstract: International audience; Using a multisatellite method, including passive microwave land surface emissivities, along with active microwave, visible and near infrared observations developed to estimate global inundated area, we examine the spatial and temporal variations of the 1993-2000 monthly inundation extents over a Boreal environment, the Ob River basin. Over the entire watershed, the mean extent of inundation during the snow-free months is 2.6 × 105 km2, consistent with previous independent static or satellites-derived estimates. The maximum in yearly inundation, showing propagation from south to north between April and June, exhibits strong seasonal and inter-annual variations. The consistency of the inundation estimates is then analyzed at local or basin-wide scale using different in situ or satellite-derived snow and runoff parameters. The results show a strong relationship between the inundation extent and the snowmelt date, the snowpack depth at three in situ stations located in the southern part of the basin. Over the northern part, results show that flooding is more closely linked to the amount of water coming downstream from the southern part of the basin. A close systematic relationship is also found between the inundation extent and the local in situ runoff at six locations as well as with the altimeter-derived discharge measured at the Ob estuary. This case study evaluation shows the potential of these data sets to provide consistent information about the seasonal and inter-annual variations of inundation over a major Boreal river basin. These results also suggest new potential to improve the description of the snow-inundation-runoff relationship that are fundamental for climate and hydrological models.

Abstract: International audience; We describe an updated model of the dust aerosol cycle embedded within the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies `ModelE' atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). The model dust distribution is compared to observations ranging from aerosol optical thickness and surface concentration to deposition and size distribution. The agreement with observations is improved compared to previous distributions computed by either an older version of the GISS AGCM or an offline tracer transport model. The largest improvement is in dust transport over the Atlantic due to increased emission over the Sahara. This increase comes from subgrid wind fluctuations associated with dry convective eddies driven by intense summertime heating. Representation of `preferred sources' of soil dust particles is also fundamental to the improvement. The observations suggest that deposition is too efficient in the model, partly due to AGCM rainfall errors.

Abstract: Sleep affects learning and development in humans and other animals, but the role of sleep in developmental learning has never been examined. Here we show the effects of night-sleep on song development in the zebra finch by recording and analysing the entire song ontogeny. During periods of rapid learning we observed a pronounced deterioration in song structure after night-sleep. The song regained structure after intense morning singing. Daily improvement in similarity to the tutored song occurred during the late phase of this morning recovery; little further improvement occurred thereafter. Furthermore, birds that showed stronger post-sleep deterioration during development achieved a better final imitation. The effect diminished with age. Our experiments showed that these oscillations were not a result of sleep inertia or lack of practice, indicating the possible involvement of an active process, perhaps neural song-replay during sleep. We suggest that these oscillations correspond to competing demands of plasticity and consolidation during learning, creating repeated opportunities to reshape previously learned motor skills.

Abstract: Clouds cover about 70% of Earth's surface and play a dominant role in the energy and water cycle of our planet. Only satellite observations provide a continuous survey of the state of the atmosphere over the entire globe and across the wide range of spatial and temporal scales that compose weather and climate variability. Satellite cloud data records now exceed more than 25 years; however, climate data records must be compiled from different satellite datasets and can exhibit systematic biases. Questions therefore arise as to the accuracy and limitations of the various sensors and retrieval methods. The Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Cloud Assessment, initiated in 2005 by the GEWEX Radiation Panel (GEWEX Data and Assessment Panel since 2011), provides the first coordinated intercomparison of publicly available, standard global cloud products (gridded monthly statistics) retrieved from measurements of multispectral imagers (some with multiangle view and polarization capabilities), IR sounders, and lidar. Cloud properties under study include cloud amount, cloud height (in terms of pressure, temperature, or altitude), cloud thermodynamic phase, and cloud radiative and bulk microphysical properties (optical depth or emissivity, effective particle radius, and water path). Differences in average cloud properties, especially in the amount of high-level clouds, are mostly explained by the inherent instrument measurement capability for detecting and/or identifying optically thin cirrus, especially when overlying low-level clouds. The study of long-term variations with these datasets requires consideration of many factors. The monthly gridded database presented here facilitates further assessments, climate studies, and the evaluation of climate models.
