- Abstract
This book serves as a starting point for pre-service teachers and researchers by providing a concise and thorough summary of key themes within the field of civics and citizenship education. The field of civics and citizenship education is both complex and contested in local and international jurisdictions. It is also a key site for political and policy interventions by governments and other interested parties. While this activity makes the field a vibrant one, it also means that it can be challenging for teachers and researchers to enter and understand the ongoing debates and discussions and the implications these present for their research and educational practice. The book begins with a detailed examination of the history of civics and citizenship education from a variety of perspectives and in different locations. It recognizes and documents how the place and importance of civics and citizenship education has changed over the last century and how this has been realized in various educational initiatives. It also examines the current state of educational and policy-level initiatives in civics and citizenship education, noting the differences between different state and country approaches. This book also undertakes a detailed consideration of the different typologies of civics and citizenship education that have been formulated by various researchers, including notions like justice-oriented citizenship, activist citizenship, and critical citizenship. It examines the theoretical foundations of both active citizenship education and global citizenship education and how these have been enacted in school settings. Furthermore, it examines the place of citizenship in higher education institutions and non-formal educational settings, including practices and statements about the importance of developing global citizenship in these arenas. It also presents a number of different case studies showcasing the variety of approaches to civics and citizenship education and discusses the opportunities and challenges educators and researchers face when researching and implementing it.

- Abstract
This book documents and analyses how outsourcing of teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is practised, arising issues therein, and how to address them, through the frame of policy enactment theory. Educational outsourcing or contracting out is globally adopted to increase cost-efficiency, diversify curricula, and complement teacher expertise. However, it often results in issues of quality and equity, inadvertently compromising student learning and limiting the mobility of students from low-income families. The book draws on document-based research involving 131 schools in Hong Kong and case studies and a survey with selected schools and educational service providers. This book is of interest to policymakers, school leaders, teachers, and educational service providers, as it suggests the strategies addressing the abovementioned issues and will advance their understanding of educational outsourcing, equity, and policy processes.

- Abstract
Various social and political actors are responsible to educate citizens to sustain democracy. Civic and Citizenship Education (CCE) addresses this issue and has gained prominence. Italy made the subject compulsory in schools with the law n.92/2019. Different conceptualisations of CCE have the notion of citizenship at the centre, which can differentiate between traditional and critical approaches. Despite this, little is known about what teachers believe in terms of citizenship and what the subject should involve in terms of goals, content and methods. This work aims to understand Italian teachers'views on CCE and its implementation and contribute to its systematisation as a scientific discipline. The author interviewed Italian high school teachers and analysed the results. The results show that teachers'beliefs about the goals of CCE relate to broad social and political issues and students'learning. These beliefs also show civic republican values. Three macro-areas of content from the 92/2019 law serve as a framework for teachers to select topics they believe are relevant, and Lawfulness Education is the key to the content, goals and teaching strategies. Teachers are unclear whether CCE should be a separate, transversal or integrated subject. Ultimately, they implement what they believe in despite the policy changes introduced by the 92/2019 law.

- Abstract
This book analyses dominant discourses of globalisation, and citizenship in schools. Diverse worldviews and ideologies construct different meanings for globalization, citizenship, and education, resulting in conceptual debates, tensions, competing discourses, and practical challenges for scholars and educators, navigating complex and contested terrain. The chapters in this volume advance further the discussions on the phenomenon of globalisation, and how it impacts on the nature of active citizenship education in schools around the world. In order to help students recognize that they are inherently global citizens, capable of understanding that local actions are globally interdependent, and that communities can be seen as temporal social networks within and beyond physical space, and action for global citizenship in school. The book, by building on intercultural dialogue and active citizenship education in schools, will promote critical appraisal of various views of the world, andoffers different ways to reconstruct and re-imagine social reality.

- Abstract
This book foregrounds silenced voices by correlating refugee experiences with educational practices, while questioning how we address the educational rights of individuals affected by conflicts and wars. Accordingly, the book presents a novel perspective within the field of education. Within the context of the most prevalent educational instruments, textbooks, this work endeavors to highlight the muted perspectives of immigrants in education and make significant advances towards resolving this problem. Through extensive research and analysis of the relevant literature, the authors shed light on the challenges refugee students face in their educational trajectories and offer innovative suggestions for adopting more equitable and inclusive approaches within our educational systems. The book not only addresses an educational dilemma, but also emphasizes humanity's shared responsibility. Supporting the educational rights of refugees promotes not only their personal growth, but also more tolerant, compassionate, and sustainable societies. At the same time, this work promotes a critical comprehension of refugee experiences in education by presenting both problems and solutions to the readership. In this way, it demonstrates how a more equitable and egalitarian approach to education can be adopted and it ultimately encourages readers to adopt a broader perspective on the world, embracing humanitarian values and social responsibility.

- Abstract
This open access book investigates how representation of Native Americans and Mexican-origin im/migrants takes place in high school history textbooks. Manually analyzing text and images in United States textbooks from the 1950s to 2022, the book documents stories of White victory and domination over Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) groups that disproportionately fill educational curricula. While representation and accurate information of non-White perspectives improves over time, the same limited tropes tend to be recycled from one textbook to the next. Textual analysis is augmented by focus groups and interviews with BIPOC students in California high schools. Together, the data show how misrepresentation and absence of BIPOC perspectives in textbooks impact youth identity. This book argues for an innovative rethinking of US history curricula to consider which stories are told, and which perspectives are represented.

12. Calling for the Super Citizen : Naturalisation Procedures in the United Kingdom and Germany

- Abstract
This book offers the first empirical and holistic analysis of the design, implementation and effects of the new naturalisation regimes in the United Kingdom and Germany introduced in the 2000s. Based on a multi-sited state ethnography, it uniquely compares the law on the books, the local administration, and the lived experiences of citizenship tests, courses, and ceremonies from an interdisciplinary social science perspective. The book argues that naturalisation procedures in both countries suggest to migrants to constantly optimise themselves in the state's interests toward the subjectivity of the “Super Citizen” – a political, economic, and cultural asset to the liberal-democratic, capitalist nation-state. The concept of the Super Citizen enables us to highlight and criticise the overburdening expectations toward citizens by application as opposed to citizens by birth. The analysis reveals that the self-presentation of Britain and Germany as liberal and meritocratic politiesis in stark contrast to migrants'lived experiences of the naturalisation process.By shedding light on naturalisation policies'efficacy, this book is aimed at students and scholars in sociology, politics, law, anthropology, and education, as well as policy-makers in the areas of citizenship and migration.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This book enriches the discourse around Global Citizenship Education in teacher education through the example of a teacher's experience in a Canada-China Sister School reciprocal learning landscape. Instead of positioning global citizenship teaching and learning as a set of fixed goals to be attained by teachers alone, this book approaches global citizenship teaching and learning as unfinished lifework in progress and as situated curriculum problems to be inquired together by university researchers, school teachers, and students under the spirit of reciprocity and community. This reimagination of narratives, theory, and action start from collaborative and reciprocal learning partnerships among Chinese and Canadian researchers and teachers in the practicality of re-searching and re-enacting the purpose and meanings of twenty-first century education in a Canada-China Sister School setting.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Johannes Ph. Backhaus applies the Model of Education Reconstruction (MER) to the context of a social accountability intervention in Cambodia. This book is not an evaluation but adopts a qualitative perspective on the learning approach applied by the researched intervention. The research found that the learning intervention does not systematically include learners'pre-existing social knowledge. It would potentially benefit from systematically harvesting and reinforcing pre-held convictions to sustainably motivate participation. It does not address potentially sensitive topics while interviewees show a sophisticated and holistic understanding of these. Finally, there are inconsistencies between the program's aims and objectives. In sum, the piloted approach offers pathways on how to beneficially include qualitative perspectives on similar development interventions.
