Research documents how abortion can be emotionally difficult and stigmatising, but generally has not considered whether and how involvement in abortion may be a source of positive emotions, including pleasure, belonging and even joy. The absence of explorations that start from the possibility of abortion pleasure and joy represents an epistemic foreclosure. Moreover, it highlights how social science literature has tended to emphasise the negative aspects of abortion care in ways that produce or amplify normative negative associations. In this paper, we investigate the positive emotions, pleasure and joy of abortion involvement by drawing on interviews conducted in 2019 with 28 abortion accompaniers in Argentina, Chile, and Ecuador about their experiences accompanying abortions after 17 weeks' gestation. Abortion accompaniment is a response to unsafe and/or inaccessible abortion whereby volunteer activists guide abortion seekers through a medication abortion. Interviewees described how the practice of accompaniment generated positive emotions by building a feminist community, shared intimacy among women, and witnessing aborting people claim their strength. Importantly, these positive emotional experiences of involvement with abortion were not distinct from the broader marginalisation of abortion but were, instead, rooted in its marginalisation.

Se presentan nuevos registros de Agonoscena succincta en las regiones de Coquimbo, Valparaíso y Metropolitana de Santiago ubicadas en la subregión central de Chile, atacando a Ruta chalepensis (ruda), planta medicinal perenne de origen europeo naturalizada en el país. Los adultos se obtuvieron mediante la cría a partir de huevos y ninfas obtenidas desde el follaje de R. chalepensis. Se entrega una diagnosis y fotografías del insecto para facilitar su reconocimiento.

Prisons in Latin America are often described as violent and lawless places. In this context, we analyse the Chilean case. We want to find out how complaints of torture and ill-treatment are investigated if the victim is a person deprived of liberty? Our hypothesis is that the response to the phenomenon, both in the prosecution of the perpetrators and in the protection of its victims, does not take into consideration the guidelines established in international standards, especially those contained in the Istanbul Protocol.To this end, we analyse a total of 124 complaints of torture or ill-treatment filed by the Chilean National Human Rights Institute (INDH). This information was then used to research the processing of these cases in the virtual portal of the Chilean Judiciary. In a next step we created a database that contains different information extracted from the electronic case files. This is the source for the quantitative analysis. For the qualitative part of our study, we describe the facts contained in the complaints and document the way they were handled. The findings confirm our hypothesis. An excessive amount of time elapses between the alleged torture or mistreatment, the filing of complaints, the use of protective measures and the termination of the cases. There are serious deficiencies in the investigations carried out by the Public Prosecutor's Office. Therefore, most of the complaints are not clarified and end up being shelved sooner or later. We conclude that, both the actions of the judges and the prosecutors in the processing of the complaints, make it clear that when it comes to investigating acts of torture or ill-treatment inside Chilean prisons, the standards of the Istanbul Protocol are not met.

Abstract Background Assessment of dynamic parameters to guide fluid administration is one of the mainstays of current resuscitation strategies. Each test has its own limitations, but passive leg raising (PLR) has emerged as one of the most versatile preload responsiveness tests. However, it requires real-time cardiac output (CO) measurement either through advanced monitoring devices, which are not routinely available, or echocardiography, which is not always feasible. Analysis of the hepatic vein Doppler waveform change, a simpler ultrasound-based assessment, during a dynamic test such as PLR could be useful in predicting preload responsiveness. The objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of hepatic vein Doppler S and D-wave velocities during PLR as a predictor of preload responsiveness. Methods Prospective observational study conducted in two medical–surgical ICUs in Chile. Patients in circulatory failure and connected to controlled mechanical ventilation were included from August to December 2023. A baseline ultrasound assessment of cardiac function was performed. Then, simultaneously, ultrasound measurements of hepatic vein Doppler S and D waves and cardiac output by continuous pulse contour analysis device were performed during a PLR maneuver. Results Thirty-seven patients were analyzed. 63% of the patients were preload responsive defined by a 10% increase in CO after passive leg raising. A 20% increase in the maximum S wave velocity after PLR showed the best diagnostic accuracy with a sensitivity of 69.6% (49.1–84.4) and specificity of 92.8 (68.5–99.6) to detect preload responsiveness, with an area under curve of receiving operator characteristic (AUC–ROC) of 0.82 ± 0.07 (p = 0.001 vs. AUC–ROC of 0.5). D-wave velocities showed worse diagnostic accuracy. Conclusions Hepatic vein Doppler assessment emerges as a novel complementary technique with adequate predictive capacity to identify preload responsiveness in patients in mechanical ventilation and circulatory failure. This technique could become valuable in scenarios of basic hemodynamic monitoring and when echocardiography is not feasible. Future studies should confirm these results.

The current study identifies and analyzes, through metaphor analysis, the conceptualizations and beliefs preservice teachers of English hold about three different dimensions of the language assessment process: teachers, students, and assessment itself. Forty-nine preservice teachers from the second to the fifth year of their English Teaching Program answered a metaphor questionnaire in which they created a metaphor for each of the three dimensions above. Then, these metaphors were later analyzed using predominantly qualitative techniques. A metaphoric analysis protocol allowed the metaphors to be coded and sorted based on the participants' reasoning into the roles participants considered teachers, students, and assessment played in the process of assessment. Findings were organized into three dimensions: teachers' roles, students' roles, and the role of assessment. Seven different metaphoric representations of teachers' roles in assessment were identified, while three were found for students and two for assessment. The present study also revealed that the preservice teachers held varied metaphors regarding the process of language assessment, showing a complex and deep understanding of the purposes of assessment from the role of teachers and students. There is a need for further study to understand why preservice teachers assigned these roles to these agents.

Earthquakes and tsunamis are natural phenomena that trigger severe consequences for communities. Compared to residents, tourists are more vulnerable to natural hazards, mainly due to a lack of knowledge of the territory hazards, alert signs, and the local language. To encourage disaster preparedness behavior, this study explored the differences in risk perception, trust in authorities, and preparedness for earthquakes and tsunamis between residents and tourists in a coastal city highly exposed to seismic activity.A survey was implemented in a sample of residents (n = 548) and tourists (national n = 194; international n = 38) in a coastal city in Chile. The questionnaire evaluated perceived risk and perceived consequences, trust in authorities, and the participants' preparedness level against earthquakes and tsunamis.The findings reveal that international tourists perceived lower risk and consequences and higher trust in authorities than national tourists and residents. On the contrary, residents demonstrated higher levels of preparedness, reflecting their familiarity with the hazards and evacuation signage. The results highlight the importance of personalized strategies to increase tourist preparedness (both national and international). Implications and strategies are addressed in the study.

Introducción: la enfermería, como ciencia y disciplina, se enfrenta al desafío de los cuidados perdidos y omisiones que afectan la seguridad y calidad de la atención. Objetivo: analizar las evidencias científicas relacionadas con los cuidados perdidos en enfermería, destacando su impacto en la seguridad y calidad asistencial. Metodología: se realizó una revisión sistemática de artículos entre 2018 y 2023, con diseño descriptivo, siguiendo el flujograma PRISMA. El estudio se llevó a cabo entre septiembre y diciembre de 2023, recopilando artículos de revistas indexadas de acceso abierto en; Scielo, Redalyc, PubMed, Wos, Scopus y CINAHL, relacionados con los cuidados perdidos en enfermería. Se aplicaron criterios de selección y exclusión, eligiendo artículos originales cualitativos y cuantitativos con una vigencia máxima de 6 años. La revisión se centró en literatura en inglés, español y portugués. Se respetaron rigurosamente las normas éticas, garantizando la confidencialidad y tratando éticamente la información sensible. Resultados: se incluyeron 7 artículos, los que revelaron disparidades en el cuidado perdido entre hospitales públicos y privados, resaltando la brecha en recursos, además de enfatizar en la relación entre el cuidado perdido y el agotamiento profesional, omisiones en cuidados básicos de enfermería como el lavado de manos, junto con la importancia del proceso de atención en la práctica de enfermería, tal como se discutió en los documentos revisados. Conclusiones: estrategias como la humanización de la atención, desarrollo de planes ante escasez de recursos y mantener una adecuada relación enfermero-paciente, son esenciales para enfrentar el problema que representan los cuidados perdidos.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), characterized by hepatic triglyceride elevation is prevalent globally and often leads to significant consequences such as steatosis and hepatocarcinoma. In association with insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and inflammation, effective interventions are essential. Dietary fiber plays a crucial role in regulating these metabolic parameters. Chia (Salvia hispanica L.), a fiber-rich oilseed, is known for its high fiber content. This study assessed the impact of the fiber-rich fraction of partially defatted chia seeds (FFC) on hepatic steatosis and metabolic disturbances induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) in mice. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed either a control diet (CD) or HFD for 10 weeks, followed by FFC or oatmeal supplementation for an additional 4 weeks. FFC intake significantly reduced hepatic steatosis, lowered triglyceride and cholesterol levels, normalized plasma triglycerides, decreased oxidative stress, and attenuated inflammation. FFC has emerged as a promising candidate for managing hepatic steatosis.

This systematic review aimed to analyze the effects of exercise, physical activity, and sports on physical fitness in adults with Down syndrome (DS). A literature search was conducted across four databases EBSCO, Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed. The PRISMA guidelines were followed. The PEDro scale and the Cochrane risk of bias tool were used to assess the quality and risk of the studies, respectively. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (code: CRD42023449627). Of the 423 records initially found, 13 were finally included in the systematic review, in which 349 adults with DS participated. 92% of the articles declared at least one significant difference post-intervention. The available evidence indicates that exercise, physical activity, and sports have a positive effect on some variables of physical fitness, especially strength, balance, body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility, and functional capacity. Furthermore, it should be considered as an additional treatment or complementary therapy to improve the functionality and quality of life of adults with DS.

En este trabajo se describe el proceso de aplicación de un diseño para la enseñanza de la distribución binomial el cual incorpora el uso del software Fhatom. En la experiencia participaron 35 estudiantes chilenos de 3º curso de Educación Media (15 a 18 años). El diseño de enseñanza considera representaciones como la manipulativa, computacional y algebraica, además se recogen algunas de las recomendaciones del proyecto GAISE. Se plantea una tarea con un contexto cercano para los estudiantes y que su solución implica la generación de distribuciones muestrales. A partir de esta información se proponen diversas cuestiones que permiten conjeturar sobre el concepto y características de la distribución binomial que posteriormente son formalizadas. Los estudiantes a través del desarrollo de la propuesta de enseñanza pudieron comprender algunos conceptos de la distribución binomial.

The emergence of a post-growth era is expected that implies rethinking the production and consumption patterns with novel design models this forces higher educational institutions to reconsider their traditional ways of teaching sustainability in their curricula. Companies also need to overcome strategies that compartmentalize environment, society and economy in their industrial strategy in order to evolve in their support for the transition. The aim of this paper is to present a design process anchored in the Strong Sustainability paradigm to overcome the gap of how Strong Sustainability could be operationalised. Design Research Methodology (DRM) has been chosen as the supporting framework for the development of this project. The Design for Strong Sustainability (DfSoSy) methodology proposed, is built on three aspects of Strong Sustainability (Milieu, Regeneration, Safe and just operating space) successively applied in a sequenced iterative design process. The latter enable the integration of thought patterns associated with integrative, systemic and fractal or multi-scale thinking respectively. Moreover, the principle of sub-optimality is highlighted as a decision principle in SoSy. Results obtain has been validated as well on the pedagogical objectives as in the usefulness of the DfSoSy. The practical contribution of this study is the DfSoSy toolkit©.

Maternally-loaded factors in the egg accumulate during oogenesis and are essential for the acquisition of oocyte and egg developmental competence to ensure the production of viable embryos. However, their molecular nature and functional importance remain poorly understood. Here, we present a collection of 9 recessive maternal-effect mutants identified in a zebrafish forward genetic screen that reveal unique molecular insights into the mechanisms controlling the vertebrate oocyte-to-embryo transition. Four genes, over easy, p33bjta, poached and black caviar, were found to control initial steps in yolk globule sizing and protein cleavage during oocyte maturation that act independently of nuclear maturation. The krang, kazukuram, p28tabj, and spotty genes play distinct roles in egg activation, including cortical granule biology, cytoplasmic segregation, the regulation of microtubule organizing center assembly and microtubule nucleation, and establishing the basic body plan. Furthermore, we cloned two of the mutant genes, identifying the over easy gene as a subunit of the Adaptor Protein complex 5, Ap5m1, which implicates it in regulating intracellular trafficking and yolk vesicle formation. The novel maternal protein Krang/Kiaa0513, highly conserved in metazoans, was discovered and linked to the function of cortical granules during egg activation. These mutant genes represent novel genetic entry points to decipher the molecular mechanisms functioning in the oocyte-to-embryo transition, fertility, and human disease. Additionally, our genetic adult screen not only contributes to the existing knowledge in the field but also sets the basis for future investigations. Thus, the identified maternal genes represent key players in the coordination and execution of events prior to fertilization.

The Chilean Patagonia is characterized by extensive protected areas that encompass most of the region. Mammals are often among the priorities for these protected areas either as conservation targets (e.g., threatened species) or as threats (e.g., invasive species). Camera traps offer a cost-effective alternative to monitor these species, however baseline studies are scarce in the region. Therefore, our objective was to provide an assessment of camera-trapping detection rates for mammals that are present in protected areas of Magallanes, Chilean Patagonia. Between 2015 and 2022 we installed 278 camera traps (9,936 trap-days), distributed in seven protected areas. For each protected area, we calculated the detection rates and proportion of camera traps that detected each species. We recorded 18 mammalian species, including ten native, four domestic, and four invasive species. The culpeo fox (Lycalopex culpaeus) was the most frequently detected species, followed by invasive European hare (Lepus europaeus) and puma (Puma concolor). Endangered species like the huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) and southern river otter (Lontra provocax) were detected infrequently, whereas beaver (Castor canadensis) and American mink (Neogale vison) were only recorded in cameras that targeted them. From our data we suggest that generalist monitoring designs are likely to be effective for relatively common species like the culpeo fox. However, when species of interest are associated with specific features of the landscape (e.g., otters and water), other designs are needed. Based on our findings, we provide recommendations for the design of camera- trapping monitoring plans in protected areas.

In this study, native ureolytic bacteria were isolated from copper tailings soils to perform microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) tests and evaluate their potential for biocement formation and their contribution to reduce the dispersion of particulate matter into the environment from tailings containing potentially toxic elements. It was possible to isolate a total of 46 bacteria; among them only three showed ureolytic activity: Priestia megaterium T130-1, Paenibacillus sp. T130-13 and Staphylococcus sp. T130-14. Biocement cores were made by mixing tailings with the isolated bacteria in presence of urea, resulting similar to those obtained with Sporosarcina pasteurii and Bacillus subtilis used as positive control. Indeed, XRD analysis conducted on biocement showed the presence of microcline (B. subtilis 17%; P. megaterium 11. 9%), clinochlore (S. pasteurii, 6.9%) and magnesiumhornblende (Paenibacillus sp. 17.8%; P. megaterium 14.6%); all these compounds were not initially present in the tailings soils. Moreover the presence of calcite (control 0.828%; Paenibacillus sp. 5.4%) and hematite (control 0.989%; B. subtilis 6.4%) was also significant unlike the untreated control. The development of biofilms containing abundant amount of Ca, C, and O on microscopic soil particles was evidenced by means of FE-SEM-EDX and XRD. Wind tunnel tests were carried out to investigate the resistance of biocement samples, accounted for a mass loss five holds lower than the control, i.e., the rate of wind erosion in the control corresponded to 82 g/m2h while for the biocement treated with Paenibacillus sp. it corresponded to only 16.371 g/m2h. Finally, in compression tests, the biocement samples prepared with P. megaterium (28.578 psi) and Paenibacillus sp. (28.404 psi) showed values similar to those obtained with S. pasteurii (27.102 psi), but significantly higher if compared to the control (15.427 psi), thus improving the compression resistance capacity of the samples by 85.2% and 84.1% with respect to the control. According to the results obtained, the biocement samples generated with the native strains showed improvements in the mechanical properties of the soil supporting them as potential candidates in applications for the stabilization of mining liabilities in open environments using bioaugmentation strategies with native strains isolated from the same mine tailing.

Introducción. Dada la complejidad y costos para determinar el porcentaje de grasa corporal en humanos, se busca establecer nuevas fórmulas para determinar esta variable. La ecuación CUN-BAE usa indicadores simples como sexo e índice de masa corporal (IMC) para estimar el porcentaje de grasa corporal. El objetivo fue determinar el grado de correlación entre el porcentaje de grasa corporal, obtenido mediante ecuación CUN-BAE, IMC y circunferencia de cintura (CC) en adultos chilenos pertenecientes a la muestra de los participantes de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud (ENS) 2016-2017. Metodología. Se incluyeron 5.583 participantes de la ENS 2016-2017, en quienes se obtuvieron medidas antropométricas para determinar IMC, estado nutricional y CC. Se determinó el porcentaje de masa grasa según la ecuación CUN-BAE. La correlación entre IMC, CC y CUN-BAE se analizó mediante el coeficiente de correlación de Pearson (r). Resultados. This study aimed to establish the relationship between the appendicular muscle mass index (AMMI), assessed from anthropometric variables, and the physical function of older people. Seventy-six older people participated in this study (72.03 ± 7.03 years). The participants underwent evaluations to determine their AMMI using anthropometry (weight, calf circumference, hip circumference, and knee height) and manual grip strength. Additionally, their physical function was evaluated using the 5-chair stand test, the 3-meter walk test, and the timed up and go test (TUG) to determine the strength of the lower limbs, the gait speed, and the dynamic balance, respectively. The results show that the AMMI did not present a significant relationship with the 5-chair stand test in both women (r = -0.135; p = 0.204) and men (r = -0.067; p = 0.349). The AMMI was moderately correlated with the gait speed in both women (r = 0.542; p < 0.001) and men (r = 0.556; p < 0.001). Finally, a statistical significance was observed in the relationship between the AMMI and the TUG test in women (r = -0.273; p = 0.047) and older men evaluated in this study (r = -0.284; p = 0.042). In conclusion, there is a relationship between the AMMI and both the dynamic balance and the gait speed. Therefore, the AMMI emerges as a potential public health assessment by enabling the clinical quantification of muscle mass and an estimation of physical function in the elderly population.

En las últimas décadas, la profesión de profesor, en consecuencia, de los cambios del espacio profesional y de los procesos de formación pos-Bolonia, lleva siendo el punto de mira de múltiples cambios que han resultado en la reconfiguración de las identidades profesionales del profesorado, por lo que es importante aportar conocimiento acerca de su proceso de construcción. La presente revisión tuvo por objetivo conocer cómo se construye la identidad profesional de los profesores de Educación Física e identificar qué elementos contribuyen en el proceso de construcción, a partir de publicaciones científicas en español y portugués indexadas en la base de datos Dialnet entre los años 2010 y 2022. Se seleccionaron 18 trabajos de investigación entre 54 trabajos identificados, clasificándolos en tres ámbitos de análisis: i) construcción de identidad profesional docente (9 estudios); ii) elementos contribuyentes para construir la identidad profesional docente (3 estudios) y iii) construcción y elementos para con la identidad profesional docente (6 estudios). Los hallazgos sugieren que los elementos contribuyentes a la construcción de la identidad profesional docente son las interacciones personales, sociales y profesionales en un proceso dinámico y progresivo durante la formación inicial y las prácticas profesionales considerando las experiencias previas.

Abstract In the ocean, downward flux of particles produced in sunlit surface waters is the major component of the biological carbon pump, which sequesters atmospheric carbon dioxide and fuels deep-sea ecosystems. The efficiency of downward carbon transfer is expected to be particularly high in tropical upwelling systems where hypoxia occurring beneath the productive surface waters is thought to hamper particle consumption. However, observations of both particle feeders and carbon export in low-oxygen waters are scarce. Here, we provide evidence that hypoxia-tolerant zooplankton feed on sinking particles in the extensive Oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ) off Peru. Using several arrays of drifting sediment traps and in situ imaging, we show geochemical and morphological transformations of sinking particles and substantial control of carbon export by zooplankton. Our findings challenge the assumption of a consistently efficient biological carbon pump in OMZs and further demonstrate the need to consider mesopelagic organisms when studying oceanic carbon sequestration.

This research aims to analyze the behavior of bubble size distribution in the HydroFloat® with seawater and tap water. The study characterized bubble size in a two-phase gas–water system in a fluidized-bed flotation cell. The impact of seawater was compared to tap water using two frothers, MIBC and polyglycol F507. The experimental design was used to investigate the influence of various parameters such as superficial air velocity, superficial liquid velocity, frother concentration, and seawater concentration on bubble size. The results indicate that the critical coalescence concentration followed the order of MIBC > F507. Bubble size decreases with increasing superficial liquid velocity, while the superficial gas velocity and frother/seawater concentration have the opposite effect. ANOVA results reveal that all linear factors are significant, the quadratic terms of the frother and seawater concentrations are significant, and the interaction term for the superficial air velocity–superficial liquid velocity is nonsignificant for bubble size. Global sensitivity analysis demonstrates that the variables significantly affecting bubble size are frother concentration and seawater concentration, followed by superficial water velocity. The superficial gas velocity has minimal impact on bubble size under the conditions studied.

Angel sharks (Squatina spp. Duméril, 1805) are a group of coastal benthic sharks distributed worldwide, currently including threatened and understudied species. Two species are formally described along the East Pacific coast, the California angel shark S. californica Ayres, 1859 and the Chilean angel shark S. armata (Philippi, 1887). The latter species occurs in the southeastern Pacific and has historically been understudied. Additionally, the original description of S. armata lacks sufficient data to confidently identify individuals of this species compared to modern descriptions, and no type specimen is currently available to ensure specimen identification. Detailed morphological descriptions for identifying species are an essential resource for solving taxonomic issues in groups of morphologically similar species and to promote the conservation of critically endangered species. Therefore, a neotype from the type locality is here designated for S. armata, and a detailed and standardized morphological characterization based on modern taxonomic works is provided. This work contributes in improving the knowledge on the Chilean angel shark taxonomy and provides an improved frame of reference for identifying angel sharks in the East Pacific, especially in areas where species may occur in sympatry.

Anti-soybean agglutinin (SBA) IgY was produced, and its potential to neutralize the haemagglutinating activity of SBA in vitro was tested. Thirty-five-week-old hens [treatment (n = 5) and control (n = 5)] were immunized with SBA or injected with saline 4 times every 15 days. Eggs were collected after the last immunization, and IgY was extracted using the polyethylene glycol (PEG) method. Serum anti-SBA IgY titres in immunized hens increased after the first immunization and reached a plateau between days 45 and 60. In contrast, specific IgY titres in the control group remained at basal levels throughout the evaluation. Average IgY titres were significantly higher in the treatment group on days 15, 30, 45, and 60. Total IgY content in the egg yolk extract was 38.7 ± 1.6 and 37.7 ± 1.5 mg/ml for the treatment and control groups, respectively. The specific anti-SBA IgY titer detected in the egg yolk extract was significantly higher (p < 0.001) for hens in the treatment group compared to the control group, with OD450nm values of 0.98 ± 0.05 and 0.058 ± 0.02, respectively. The specificity of anti-SBA IgY was confirmed by the Western blotting, and the inhibition of SBA-induced haemagglutination in vitro was compared with D-galactose, a known molecule that binds to SBA and blocks its binding to erythrocytes. The inhibition of SBA-induced haemagglutination by the anti-SBA IgY reached 512 units of haemagglutination inhibition (UHI), compared to 8 or 256 UHI, respectively, when IgY from control chickens or D-galactose was used. Thus, anti-SBA IgY antibodies were efficiently produced in large quantities and effectively inhibited SBA-induced haemagglutination in vitro.

El entorno universitario sufre constantes transformaciones, lo que incrementa enormemente la complejidad e incertidumbre que deben procesar las universidades alrededor del mundo y, en particular, en América Latina. Este ensayo propone un modelo teórico-metodológico para el uso del pensamiento de escenarios como estrategia en el análisis institucional universitario orientado a la generación de evidencia para la toma de decisiones en contextos de alta incertidumbre. Se comienza exponiendo las características de la universidad latinoamericana y su entorno, se continúa con una discusión sobre la naturaleza del entorno organizacional y el aporte de los escenarios a su observación. Finalmente, se presentan lineamientos para su aplicación referentes a tres dimensiones: (1) fuentes de evidencia y gestión del no-conocimiento, (2) características estructurales del entorno universitario y (3) procedimientos metodológicos sobre los que se debe basar la construcción de estos escenarios.

Introducción: La alimentación se construye a partir de experiencias y significados adquiridos en el curso de la vida. Las personas mayores tienen un acervo importante que informa de valores y prácticas culturales aplicadas a la alimentación. El objetivo del estudio fue interpretar los significados que entregan personas mayores a la construcción de su alimentación en trayectorias del curso de vida. Material y métodos: La investigación utilizó un enfoque cualitativo de alcance exploratorio, utilizando el método de Teoría Fundamentada de Strauss y Corbin. Para la recolección de datos se aplicó una entrevista semiestructurada entre julio de 2021 y junio de 2022. El tipo de muestreo fue teórico y el análisis de los datos cualitativos respondió al proceso de codificación abierta, axial y selectiva. Resultados: Participaron 54 personas mayores (72% mujeres) con edad promedio de 68,6 años (6,9 años). Las personas mayores construyeron su alimentación con un alto significado a las comidas caseras, con influencia de género femenino durante la niñez y adolescencia. En la adultez, se reconstruye la alimentación al ingresar al mundo laboral. En la actualidad, cimentan la alimentación con un enfoque de cuidados para su salud. Reconocen transiciones y puntos de inflexión en la alimentación provocados por terremotos, pandemia por COVID-19, situación política en el país, embarazos o el diagnóstico de alguna enfermedad crónica. Discusión: Las personas mayores reconocen diversas vivencias en trayectorias vitales que han marcado sus patrones alimentarios. Estas experiencias de vida pueden ser la base de estrategias o acciones en la práctica clínica que aporten a su bienestar. Abstract Introduction: Food is constructed from experiences and meanings acquired in the course of life. The elderly have an important heritage that informs cultural values and practices applied to food. The objective of the study was to interpret the meanings that older people give to the construction of their food in life trajectories. Methods: The research used a qualitative approach of exploratory scope, using the method of Grounded Theory of Strauss and Corbin. To collect data, a semi-structured interview was applied between July 2021 and June 2022. The type of sampling was theoretical and the analysis of qualitative data responded to the open, axial and selective coding process. Results: 54 elderly people (72% women) with average age of 68.6 years (6.9 years). The elderly built their food with a high meaning to homemade meals, with female gender influence during childhood and adolescence. In adulthood, food is rebuilt when entering the world of work. At present, they base food with a care approach for their health. They recognize transitions and turning points in food provoked by earthquakes, pandemic by COVID-19, political situation in the country, pregnancies or the diagnosis of a chronic disease. Discussion: The elderly recognize diverse experiences in life trajectories that have marked their eating patterns. These life experiences can be the basis of strategies or actions in clinical practice that contribute to your well-being.

Deoxygenation is tied to organic carbon (Corg) supply and utilization in marine systems. Under oxygen-depletion, bacteria maintain Corg respiration using alternative electron acceptors such as nitrate. Since anaerobic respiration’s energy yield is lower, Corg remineralization may be reduced and its residence time increased. Summary: Promoting sustainable diets is crucial for mitigating global greenhouse gas emissions. We investigated the potential for large-scale dietary shifts to address the impacts of climate change on agriculture and food through surveys and choice experiments in China, Japan, and Vietnam (n = 5,089). Our findings reveal that Asian consumers are largely unwilling to deviate from current dietary habits, particularly regarding the consumption of animal proteins. This reluctance persists despite significant preferences for environmental certification as a proxy for greater sustainability in food production, as expressed by wealthier and younger respondents. Information experiments demonstrate that altruistic messaging fails to induce change, and positive information about climate impacts weakens the influence of certification. However, self-enhancement framing, particularly effective with individuals aged 60 years and above, shows promise. Our findings provide valuable insights for researchers and policymakers seeking effective strategies to encourage sustainable diets, shedding light on challenges and potential avenues for successful intervention. En el presente artículo abordaremos el problema de lo irrepresentable dentro del psicoanálisis. Para esto exploramos dos ejes que consideramos anudados entre sí. En primer lugar, desde la lectura que hace Jacques Rancière del inconsciente freudiano a partir de su propuesta del inconsciente estético, nos situaremos en el cambio del régimen representacional al régimen estético de la literatura y su reparto de lo sensible que trasciende el mundo de las artes alcanzando un terreno político. En segundo lugar, investigaremos la relación de Freud con la técnica de interpretación de sueños, la teoría de los sueños en sí y, a partir de esto, el encuentro con los límites de la representación.

Emergency remote teaching (ERE) triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges to higher education institutions worldwide. Although it had several negative consequences, it also enabled advances in the integration of technology into the teaching and learning process. The purpose of this study was to examine and characterize the key elements of the process of returning to face-to-face courses. The study was based on a mixed quantitative and qualitative design. 631 students from Chile, Venezuela, and Colombia were surveyed about their experiences returning to face-to-face classes (in terms of virtual tools, their feelings, and their expectations for academic success). The survey also included questions about the lockdown caused by the pandemic, specifically regarding instructional and didactic design, participation in online sessions, and the role of faculty during the pandemic. Descriptive and correlative analyses were performed to examine relationships among variables. Qualitative data were analyzed within a hermeneutically-oriented framework. Our analyses show that virtual classrooms or learning management systems (LMS) continued to be used after the pandemic. However, their use is strongly associated with a more traditional approach to teaching; LMSs and virtual classrooms are primarily used as filing locations and for receiving and storing homework assignments and assessments. In terms of interaction, qualitative analyses have shown that relationships with faculty and between students are better in face-to-face classes and that there is not much difference in perceptions of collaborative work in online learning compared to face-to-face classes. Finally, students' expectations of academic success are low in the short term, while they are higher in the long term. Students also indicated that it is important to them that teachers take care about the didactic design of the course, including strategies that encourage interaction and participation in both synchronous and asynchronous sessions. In addition, students mentioned that teachers should incorporate strategies to promote academic motivation, self-regulation, and a safe environment. An important finding of this study is that students prefer a blended learning format when comparing online and face-to-face instruction. In Argentina, Chile and Ecuador, abortion at later durations of pregnancy is legally restricted. Feminist collectives in these contexts support people through self-managed medical abortion outside the healthcare system. The model of in-person abortion accompaniment represents an opportunity to examine a self-care practice that challenges and reimagines abortion provision. We formed a collaborative partnership built on a commitment to shared power and decision-making between researchers and partners. We conducted 28 key informant interviews with accompaniers in Argentina, Chile and Ecuador in 2019 about their model of in-person abortion accompaniment at later durations of pregnancy. We iteratively coded transcripts using a thematic analysis approach. Accompaniers premised their work in a feminist activist framework that understands accompaniment as addressing inequalities and expanding rights, especially for the historically marginalised. Through a detailed description of the process of in-person accompaniment, we show that the model, including the logistical considerations and security mechanisms put in place to ensure favourable abortion outcomes, emphasises peer-to-peer provision of supportive physical and emotional care of the accompanied person. In this way, it represents supported self-care through which individuals are centred as the protagonists of their own abortion, while being accompanied by feminist peers. This model of supported self-care challenges the idea that "self-care" necessarily means "solo care", or care that happens alone. The model's focus on peer-to-peer transfer of knowledge, providing emotional support, and centring the accompanied person not only expands access to abortion, but represents person-centred practices that could be scaled and replicated across contexts.

(TiO2) is both a natural and artificial compound that is transparent under visible and near-infrared light. However, it could be prepared with other metals, substituting for Ti, thus changing its properties. In this article, we present density functional theory calculations for Ti(1−x)AxO2, where A stands for any of the eight following neutral substitutional impurities, Fe, Ni, Co, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag and Au, based on the rutile structure of pristine TiO2. We use a fully unconstrained version of the density functional method with generalized gradient approximation plus the U exchange and correlation, as implemented in the Quantum Espresso free distribution. Within the limitations of a finite-size cell approximation, we report the band structure, energy gaps and absorption spectrum for all these cases. Rather than stressing precise values, we report on two general features: the location of the impurity levels and the general trends of the optical properties in the eight different systems. Our results show that all these substitutional atoms lead to the presence of electronic levels within the pristine gap, and that all of them produce absorptions in the visible and near-infrared ranges of electromagnetic radiation. Such results make these systems interesting for the fabrication of solar cells. Considering the variety of results, Ni and Ag are apparently the most promising substitutional impurities with which to achieve better performance in capturing the solar radiation on the planet’s surface.

The set-covering problem aims to find the smallest possible set of subsets that cover all the elements of a larger set. The difficulty of solving the set-covering problem increases as the number of elements and sets grows, making it a complex problem for which traditional integer programming solutions may become inefficient in real-life instances. Given this complexity, various metaheuristics have been successfully applied to solve the set-covering problem and related issues. This study introduces, implements, and analyzes a novel metaheuristic inspired by the well-established Growth Optimizer algorithm. Drawing insights from human behavioral patterns, this approach has shown promise in optimizing complex problems in continuous domains, where experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and competitiveness of the metaheuristic compared to other strategies. The Growth Optimizer algorithm is modified and adapted to the realm of binary optimization for solving the set-covering problem, resulting in the creation of the Binary Growth Optimizer algorithm. Upon the implementation and analysis of its outcomes, the findings illustrate its capability to achieve competitive and efficient solutions in terms of resolution time and result quality.

Boronate esters are a class of compounds containing a boron atom bonded to two oxygen atoms in an ester group, often being used as precursors in the synthesis of other materials. The characterization of the structure and properties of esters is usually carried out by UV-visible, infrared, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques. With the aim to better understand our experimental data, in this article, the density functional theory (DFT) is used to analyze the UV-visible and infrared spectra, as well as the isotropic shielding and chemical shifts of the hydrogen atoms 1H, carbon 13C and boron 11B in the compound 4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxoborolan-2-yl)benzaldehyde. Furthermore, this study considers the change in its electronic and spectroscopic properties of this particular ester, when its boron atom is coordinated with a fluoride anion. The calculations were carried out using the LSDA and B3LYP functionals in Gaussian-16, and PBE in CASTEP. The results show that the B3LYP functional gives the best approximation to the experimental data. The formation of a coordinated covalent B–F bond highlights the remarkable sensitivity of the NMR chemical shifts of carbon, oxygen, and boron atoms and their surroundings. Furthermore, this bond also highlights the changes in the electron transitions bands n → π* and π → π* during the absorption and emission of a photon in the UV-vis, and in the stretching bands of the C=C bonds, and bending of BO2 in the infrared spectrum. This study not only contributes to the understanding of the properties of boronate esters but also provides important information on the interactions and responses optoelectronic of the compound when is bonded to a fluorine atom.

This study aims at explaining the impact of Instagram social media influencers on behavioural intentions (i.e., intentions to interact with them and recommend them, and also purchase the products they endorse or post). It focuses on influencers’ expertise and their role as opinion and taste leaders. Based on opinion leadership theory, a survey was conducted on 210 Instagram users. Main findings reveal that post originality, uniqueness, and quality impact on influencers’ opinion leadership which, in turn, impacts on behavioural intentions. Influencers’ expertise impacts on the intention to recommend the influencers and purchase the products posted, while influencers’ taste leadership only influences the intention to interact with them. Few papers analyse the direct effects of influencers’ expertise and opinion and taste leadership on followers’ behavioural intentions. Consequently, when designing a social media marketing campaign influencers’ selection should be made according to those traits which stimulate specific behaviours such as fostering interaction, increase electronic word of mouth or persuade to purchase the products posted. In case of product endorsements, selecting influencers with acknowledged expertise is recommended as they will cause an impact on the intention to purchase endorsed products. Influencers perceived as opinion leaders have an overall influence on their followers’ behavioural intentions.

A lo largo de la última década se han venido produciendo transformaciones radicales en el entorno interno y externo del sistema global de educación superior, lo cual incrementa los desafíos de los sistemas de gestión de estas instituciones para la adaptación. El presente artículo realiza un análisis bibliométrico de las investigaciones sobre gestión en educación superior publicadas entre 2011 y 2020 desde un enfoque mixto. A partir de un corpus de 936 artículos y revisiones indexadas en Scopus, se ha realizado, mediante la coocurrencia de palabras clave asignadas por las personas autoras a las publicaciones, un mapa científico. En una arista cuantitativa, este procedimiento permitió identificar la frecuencia de cada concepto, sus vínculos mutuos y su agrupación en clústeres. Posteriormente, un análisis de carácter eminentemente cualitativo hizo posible describir las temáticas centrales de cada clúster. Se encontró una estructura de once clústeres o líneas temáticas, la diversidad temática es coherente con el carácter altamente complejo del entorno interno y externo de los sistemas de gestión de educación superior y de los cambios recurrentes que estos han enfrentado en los años recientes. De este modo, el trabajo sistematiza los resultados y problemas relevantes para el campo, al tiempo que entrega luces respecto a los ámbitos en los que se deberían enfocar las futuras revisiones del estado del arte y orientaciones para guiar la problematización de las discusiones más pertinentes en este estadio de desarrollo del campo.

Introducción: La investigación sobre evaluación de aprendizajes en educación superior ha tenido un significativo desarrollo buscando modificar sus lógicas transmisivas, e incorporar conocimiento actual sobre formación y aprendizaje de competencias profesionales. Objetivo: Analizar, implementar y proponer estrategias de evaluación auténtica en distintos niveles de un programa de formación docente para su uso en contextos presenciales y virtuales. Método: Investigación acción que se desarrolla en una universidad jesuita chilena donde se impulsa la evaluación auténtica en su modelo pedagógico. El estudio tiene dos etapas: Diagnóstico -se aplica cuestionario (N=102) y grupo de discusión a estudiantes universitarios - Aplicación de estrategias evaluativas innovadoras desarrolladas por docentes universitarios entre el primer y cuarto año del programa. Resultados: Estudiantes y docentes sugieren mejoras en las instrucciones y criterios de corrección y a la retroalimentación y participación. En base a esto se implementa una estrategia innovada de evaluación en cinco cursos claves del plan de estudio. Discusión: Se describen cinco orientaciones claves para desarrollar estrategias de evaluación auténtica en contextos universitarios y aportar al cumplimiento de estándares y criterios de calidad en educación superior: contextualización; evaluación de habilidades complejas; anticipar desempeños esperados; favorecer el juicio evaluativo en los propios estudiantes y planificar las formas de retroalimentación.

Abstract Objective: To investigate the association between a lifestyle score and all-cause mortality in the Chilean population. Design: Prospective study. Settings: The score was based on seven modifiable behaviours: salt intake, fruit and vegetable intake, alcohol consumption, sleep duration, smoking, physical activity and sedentary behaviours. 1-point was assigned for each healthy recommendation. Points were summed to create an unweighted score from 0 (less healthy) to 7 (healthiest). According to their score, participants were then classified into: less healthy (0–2 points), moderately healthy (3–4 points) and the healthiest (5–7 points). Associations between the categories of lifestyle score and all-cause mortality were investigated using Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for confounders. Nonlinear associations were also investigated. Participants: 2706 participants from the Chilean National Health Survey 2009–2010. Results: After a median follow-up of 10·9 years, 286 (10·6 %) participants died. In the maximally adjusted model, and compared with the healthiest participants, those less healthy had 2·55 (95 % CI 1·75, 3·71) times higher mortality risk due to any cause. Similar trends were identified for the moderately healthy group. Moreover, there was a significant trend towards increasing the mortality risk when increasing unhealthy behaviours (hazard ratio model 3: 1·61 (95 % CI 1·34, 1·94)). There was no evidence of nonlinearity between the lifestyle score and all-cause mortality. Conclusion: Individuals in the less healthy lifestyle category had higher mortality risk than the healthiest group. Therefore, public health strategies should be implemented to promote adherence to a healthy lifestyle across the Chilean population.

A raíz de la pandemia del año 2020, se produce un cambio inesperado en la docencia universitaria, que movilizó a las instituciones de educación superior, a realizar un cambio en la forma cómo se concebía la docencia presencial y en consecuencia movilizó a las instituciones hacia un nuevo paradigma educativo, pasando de modelos presenciales a modelos híbridos de enseñanza y aprendizaje con clases sincrónicas y asincrónicas. Este estudio tiene por objetivo analizar el impacto de la implementación de estrategias de evaluación basadas en el empoderamiento y participación activa de los estudiantes. La metodología abordada cumple con un enfoque cualitativo con estudios de casos. Los resultados que se obtienen dan cuenta que el compromiso de los estudiantes, desde un proceso de evaluación, que les demandó la toma de decisiones, impacta de manera positiva mostrando sus expectativas del logro académico. Por lo tanto, se concluye que la posibilidad de generar y acordar con los estudiantes de evaluación conforme a los resultados de aprendizaje formalmente establecidos en el programa y el syllabus, promoviendo en ello la justicia social en momento de evaluar, teniendo todos y todas las posibilidades de lograr los aprendizajes esperados, los movilizó hacia un compromiso colectivo entre sus pares, así como también en la confianza de lograr los desempeños esperados. La posibilidad de ir más allá de las pruebas tradicionales dando espacio a la generación de otros productos o evidencias que confirme el logro de aprendizajes implicó situar a los estudiantes en el centro de su propio aprendizaje.
