Herein the reaction of methy cinnamates with N‐Iodosuccinimide (NIS) is reported and the possible formation of dihydrobenzofuryl dimeric derivatives (DHBF), known for their biological activities, is explored. Having an oxidizing capacity, we studied the behavior of NIS with methyl ferulate and under optimized reaction conditions we obtained its DHBF dimer in 35% yield. It is worth to note that we did not obtain the DHBF in his natural form, but rather as the demethylated compound, likely due to dismutation reactions activated by the presence of water in the solvent. Methyl caffeate reacted with NIS to furnish the DHBF dimer in 15% yield, while methyl coumarate and methyl isoferulate did not give any form of DHBF dimers, showing the importance of a hydroxyl group in para position on an activated system and an electron‐rich aromatic ring. An electrochemical investigation by cyclic voltammetry was carried out on the three cinnamates and confirmed the correlation between dimerization and oxidation potential: methyl ferulate and methyl caffeate dimerize, while methyl coumarate, due to its higher oxidizing potential, does not. Vicia faba L. is a leguminous plant with seeds rich in nutritional compounds, such as polyphenols and L-dopa, a dopamine precursor and first-line treatment for Parkinson's symptoms. Recently, its by-products have been revalued as a sustainable source of bioactive compounds. In this study, aqueous extracts of Lucan broad bean pod valves (BPs) were characterized to evaluate their potential use as adjuvants in severe Parkinson's disease. L-dopa content, quantified by LC-UV, was much higher in BPs than in seeds (28.65 mg/g dw compared to 0.76 mg/g dw). In addition, vicine and convicine, the metabolites responsible for favism, were not detected in pods. LC-ESI/LTQ-Orbitrap/MS2 allowed the identification of the major polyphenolic compounds, including quercetin and catechin equivalents, that could ensure neuroprotection in Parkinson's disease. ESI(±)-FT-ICR MS was used to build 2D van Krevelen diagrams; polyphenolic compounds and carbohydrates were the most representative classes. The neuroprotective activity of the extracts after MPP+-induced neurotoxicity in SH-SY5Y cells was also investigated. BP extracts were more effective than synthetic L-dopa, even at concentrations up to 100 µg/mL, due to the occurrence of antioxidants able to prevent oxidative stress. The stability and antioxidant component of the extracts were then emphasized by using naturally acidic solutions of Punica granatum L., Ribes rubrum L., and gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica L.) as extraction solvents. Electrophoretic deposition is a powerful tool for depositing materials onto a substrate by using an electric field; its application in biotechnological areas, namely, electrophoretic protein deposition (EPD), is the most promising for, e.g., fabricating novel amperometric biosensors. Unfortunately, EPD suffers from several drawbacks due to coupled parasite electrochemical processes damaging the deposit; moreover, the nature of the deposition process, the deposit, and its stability are still controversial and unknown. The present research presents a deep investigation of the EPD processes conducted by using several electroanalytical techniques and an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM); notably, EPD was used here as a novel tool for performing an electrophoretically assisted, classical enzyme immobilization technique like co-crosslinking, thus permitting the immobilization of the desired protein in situ, i.e., exclusively onto the deposition electrode. An electrochemical study permitted the acquisition of useful insights about electrophoresis processes as well as solvent discharge and gas evolution at the deposition electrode; further, the use of appropriate current or potential pulse sequences, as investigated and improved in this study, together with fine-tuned chemical conditions, allowed the optimization of this novel EPD approach. Calcium oxalate monohydrate is found as a by-product of environmental damage to stonework of importance in preserving cultural heritage. XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) was here used to characterize the standard compound, calcium oxalate monohydrate, RPE, chemically synthesized as provided by Carlo Erba Reagents - Cod. 434004. Degradation occurred during analysis and this is described. Repeat XPS acquisitions have allowed us to monitor the spectral changes of calcium oxalate during the whole process of analysis: its degradation was rationalized by considering the effect of x-ray power; UHV exposure; and thermal effects suffered by the powdered sample after its insertion into the spectrometer and, particularly, during spectra acquisition. Measurement of degradation with time enabled extrapolation to yield the primary composition. It was found that samples will completely dehydrate in ultra high vacuum, UHV. Although dehydrated samples are then stable in UHV, during XPS acquisitions degradation of calcium oxalate occurs and continues in UHV, even in the absence of x-ray exposure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
