The first monograph on the European hamster from the Strasbourg region dates back to 1765. By the 1930s, a long and continuous chronobiological research tradition was established for this species, starting with the works of Charles Kayser, who published between 1938 and 1971. Another early key researcher in this area was Bernhard Canguilhem with publications from 1966 to 1999. From the 1980s onwards, "the Pévets," Paul Pévet and his wife, Mireille Masson‐Pévet, gave new energy to European hamster research. They broadened the research scope from basic hibernation research to mechanistic studies of circannual rhythms and from physiological aspects to molecular details. One main underlying question in their research was the role of melatonin. Thanks to their enthusiasm and vision, the European hamster is today one of the best – if not the best – studied circannual species. At least 73 parameters are described to cycle. Thirty‐two of them have been shown to be driven by a circannual clock. Moreover, ground‐breaking advances in our understanding of the mechanistic of hibernation, circannual clock functioning, and its entrainment were made. With most of this research being conducted in Strasbourg, Paul Pévet was instrumental in providing the necessary resources that made these innovative and unconventional long‐term animal studies possible, contributing to fundamental research and, ultimately, to species conservation. In the years 2012-2017, we studied the annual and diel temporal activity patterns exhibited by female Geoffroy's bats (Myotis emarginatus) during reproduction by using an infrared light barrier system, videotaping with an infrared camera and sporadic direct counts of juveniles in the roost when the adult bats were not present. We determined the effect of weather on timing and duration of maternity roost occupancy, reproductive periods, return and emergence flights and amount of time spent outside the roost, and estimated the yearly reproductive output. Contrary to the considerable effects of weather conditions on the reproduction phenology in Myotis daubentonii and M. nattereri, timing and duration of reproductive activities of M. emarginatus were remarkably similar over the study period despite distinct inter-annual differences in the occurrence of inclement weather spells causing food shortages and use of torpor. Pregnancy, lactation and roost occupation by adult females were completed every year within 10 to 11 weeks. Adverse spring weather bouts caused considerable fluctuations in the duration of colony formation during early pregnancy, but did not influence the total duration of the pregnancy period. The mean durations of both the emergence and return flights were markedly similar over the study years. An exception was the distinct increase in duration of emergence flight during pregnancy in 2016 and 2017 which might be related to increased colony numbers. With the exception of the year 2015, the standard deviations of emergence flights were small, but in contrast to the quite scheduled return flights during lactation, the mean durations of return flights during pregnancy varied strongly. The return flights executed by juveniles during post-lactation were highly irregular. The mean time spent outside the roost was quite similar over the study years. The estimated yearly reproductive output was low (<52%) and the proportion of non-reproductive females in the maternity colony high. Nevertheless, the colony numbers increased considerably over the study period. The relevance of keeping the annual and diel activity patterns rather inflexible and of an effective social thermoregulation in relation to a trade-off between survival and reproduction are discussed. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), a key species in the Southern Ocean, reduce their metabolism as an energy saving mechanism in response to the harsh environmental conditions during the Antarctic winter. Although the adaptive significance of this seasonal metabolic shift seems obvious, the driving factors are still unclear. In particular, it is debated whether the seasonal metabolic cycle is driven by changes in food availability, or if an endogenous timing system entrained by photoperiod might be involved. In this study, we used different long-term photoperiodic simulations to examine the influence of light regime and endogenous rhythmicity on the regulation of krill seasonal metabolic cycle. Krill showed a seasonal cycle of growth characterized by null-to-negative growth rates during autumn-winter and positive growth rates during spring-summer, which was manifested also in constant darkness, indicating strong endogenous regulation. Similar endogenous cycles were observed for the activity of the key-metabolic enzyme malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and for the expression levels of a selection of metabolic-related genes, with higher values in spring-summer and lower values in autumn-winter. On the other side, a seasonal cycle of oxygen consumption was observed only when krill were exposed to simulated seasonal changes in photoperiod, indicating that light-related cues might play a major role in the regulation of krill oxygen consumption. The influence of light-regime on oxygen consumption was minimal during winter, when light-phase duration was below 8 h, and it was maximal during summer, when light-phase duration was above 16 h. Significant upregulation of the krill clock genes clk, cry2, and tim1, as well as of the circadian-related opsins rh1a and rrh, was observed after light-phase duration had started to decrease in early autumn, suggesting the presence of a signaling cascade linking specific seasonal changes in the Antarctic light regime with clock gene activity and the regulation of krill metabolic dormancy over the winter.

Thyroid hormone (TH) directs seasonal breeding through reciprocal regulation of TH deiodinase (Dio2/Dio3) gene expression in tanycytes in the ependymal zone of the medio-basal hypothalamus (MBH). Thyrotropin secretion by the pars tuberalis (PT) is a major photoperiod-dependent upstream regulator of Dio2/Dio3 gene expression. Long days enhance thyrotropin production, which increases Dio2 expression and suppresses Dio3 expression, thereby heightening TH signaling in the MBH. Short days appear to exert the converse effect. Here, we combined endocrine profiling and transcriptomics to understand how photoperiod and TH control the ovine reproductive status through effects on hypothalamic function. Almost 3000 genes showed altered hypothalamic expression between the breeding- and non-breeding seasons, showing gene ontology enrichment for cell signaling, epigenetics and neural plasticity. In contrast, acute switching from a short (SP) to a long photoperiod (LP) affected the expression of a much smaller core of 134 LP-responsive genes, including a canonical group previously linked to photoperiodic synchronization. Reproductive switch-off at the end of the winter breeding season was completely blocked by thyroidectomy (THX), despite a very modest effect on the hypothalamic transcriptome. Only 49 genes displayed altered expression between intact and THX ewes, including less than 10% of the LP-induced gene set. Neuroanatomical mapping showed that many LP-induced genes were expressed in the PT, independently of the TH status. In contrast, TH-sensitive seasonal genes were principally expressed in the ependymal zone. These data highlight the distinctions between seasonal remodeling effects, which appear to be largely independent of TH, and TH-dependent localised effects which are permissive for transition to the non-breeding state. Mammalian hibernation is characterized by prolonged dormancy consisting of pronounced depression of metabolism and body temperature. Though hibernation occurs in at least seven mammalian orders and several families of the order Rodentia, the ecology and physiology of hibernation in rodents has been most extensively studied in the family Sciuridae, particularly in the so-called ground squirrels, that is, the tribe Marmotini. Early studies of these rodents demonstrated the important role of an endogenous circannual clock in the persistence of annual timing and phasing of key seasonal events, including weight gain, hibernation and reproduction. Here, we review the causes and consequences of intraspecific variation in the timing of hibernation and reproduction in these sciurids and examine the physiological mechanisms that contribute to phenotypic plasticity in seasonal timing. Although the duration, annual phasing and predictability of seasonal change in environmental conditions likely promoted the evolution of endogeneity, precision and brevity of breeding seasons in the annual cycles of sciurids, substantial intraspecific variation in hibernation and reproductive phenology exists along latitudinal and altitudinal clines, as well as among locally varying environmental micro-conditions. We suggest that much of this variation is a function of plasticity in the physiological mechanisms controlling annual cycles. While studies of captive animals have been instrumental in establishing the role of an endogenous rhythm, a greater emphasis on experimental field manipulations is needed to better understand the function, causes and consequences of phenological shifts in wild populations. Ultimately, the capacity of hibernators to adjust their timing in response to changing environmental conditions, either through phenotypic plasticity or microevolution, will be an important determinant of the resilience of sciurid species to changing climate. In some long-lived organisms, particularly in tropical birds and migrants that spend part of the year close to the equator, endogenous circannual rhythms have been demonstrated in seasonal events like reproduction, molt, and migration. These, like the circadian rhythms, are expressed only in constant conditions of illumination with a periodicity deviating from 1 yr. If birds followed this periodicity, they would soon be out of phase with the annual calendar and perish and, therefore, they would need to be synchronized. However, almost nothing is known as to how synchronization is achieved in birds. Herein, with the help of a suitable model, viz., the tropical spotted munia and long-term experiments conducted in series over a 5-yr period, we provide direct evidence for the first time indicating that the segment of annual photocycle with maximal rate of increase prior to vernal equinox (approximately between mid-February and mid-March) synchronizes the circannual reproductive cycle with the monsoon period of ample food supply through a phase delay. Data also indicate, contrary to the prevalent view, that birds in the tropics can perceive minor changes in day-length, that birds respond to progressive changes in day-length as distinct from responding to fixed photoperiods of particular durations, and that birds can actually distinguish the quality of the environmental signal, viz., vernal equinox from early spring, or increasing days of spring from decreasing days of autumn. The underlying mechanisms, although yet to be identified, appear to involve a gonado-inhibitory rather than the conventional gonado-stimulatory response to increasing day-length. The photoperiodic responses of spotted munia are distinctly different from that of any “long-day” birds described thus far and do not conform to the prevalent “circadian coincidence” hypothesis of photoperiodism. Precise timing of migration is crucial for animals targeting seasonal resources at locations encountered across their annual cycle. Upon departure, long-distance migrants need to anticipate unknown environmental conditions at their arrival site, and they do so with their internal annual clock. Here, we tested the hypothesis that long-distance migrants synchronize their circannual clock according to the phenology of their environment during the breeding season and therefore adjust their spring departure date according to the conditions encountered at their breeding site the year before. To this end, we used tracking data of Eurasian curlews from different locations and combined movement data with satellite-extracted green-up dates at their breeding site. The spring departure date was better explained by green-up date of the previous year, while arrival date at the breeding site was better explained by latitude and longitude of the breeding site, suggesting that other factors impacted migration timing en route . On a broader temporal scale, our results suggest that long-distance migrants may be able to adjust their migration timing to advancing spring dates in the context of climate change.

Thyroid hormone (TH) and estradiol (E2) direct seasonal switches in ovine reproductive physiology. In sheep, as in other mammals and birds, control of thyrotropin (TSH) production by the pars tuberalis (PT) links photoperiod responsiveness to seasonal breeding. PT-derived TSH governs opposite seasonal patterns of the TH deiodinases Dio2 / Dio3 expression in tanycytes of the neighboring medio-basal hypothalamus (MBH), which explain the key role of TH. We recently used RNA-Seq to identify seasonal markers in the MBH and define the impact of TH. This impact was found to be quite limited, in terms of number of target genes, and very restricted with regards to neuroanatomical location, as TH specifically impacts genes expressed in tanycytes and hypothalamus, not in the PT. Here we address the impact of E2 on these seasonal markers, which are specifically expressed in either PT, tanycytes or hypothalamus. We also investigate if progesterone (P4) may be involved in timing the seasonal transition to anestrus. Our analysis provides circuit-level insights into the impact of sex steroids on the ewe seasonal breeding cycle. First, seasonal gene expression in the PT is independent of the sex steroid status. The fact that seasonal gene expression in the PT is also TH-independent strengthens the view that the PT is a circannual timer. Second, select tanycytic markers display some level of responsiveness to E2 and P4, which indicates another potential level of feedback control by sex steroids. Third, Kiss1 neurons of the arcuate nucleus are responsive to both TH and E2, which places them at the crossroads of photoperiodic transduction pathway and sex steroid feedback. This provides strong support to the concept that these Kiss1 neurons are pivotal to the long-recognized "seasonal switch in the ability of E2 to exert negative feedback", which drives seasonal breeding. • Circuit-level insights of sex steroids impact on the ewe seasonal breeding cycle- Seasonal gene expression in the Pars tuberalis is unaffected by sex steroids. • The Pars tuberalis functions as a circannual clock- Seasonal gene expression in tanycytes is weakly affected by sex steroids. • Further evidence that Kiss1 neurons of the arcuate nucleus govern seasonal breeding.
