Six biomass district heating plants are presently under monitoring in the Tuscany provinces of Pisa, Lucca and Massa Carrara. Monitoring started in October 2010 and will continue until late spring 2012, thus including two winter seasons. The aim of monitoring is to provide the plant managers with a set of suggestions and instructions in order to improve the overall plant efficiency and to optimise the biomass to energy chain. First monitoring results are here presented. The monitored plant typologies vary from the small plug­in heating central to the double biomass boiler heating central, with a nominal heat power that ranges from 110kW to 850kW; all the plants burn wood chips from short chain. Furthermore, in order to support local authorities in correctly planning investments in the biomass to heat sector, the woody biomass quantities available (offer) and the need of heat (demand) at local level is assessed through GEM (Green Energy Model), a specifically developed GIS based methodology, that has been applied to the areas under investigation; the methodology includes both biomass resources growing models and economic models specifically developed. Duplex stainless steels offer a good combination of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance compared to standard austenitic grades. They are widely used in chemical, petrochemical, fertilizer and cellulose industries. These steels solidify liquid + ferritic field and it is during cooling of the solid that a partial ferrite transformation into austenite takes place. The amount of austenite and ferrite phases depends on chemical composition and cooling rate. The best combination of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance is obtained with a á /ã volume ratio near to 1. In this work, localized corrosion resistance of a rolled duplex stainless steel 21 Cr 1 Ni was investigated by means of Double Loop Electrochemical Potentiodynamic Reactivation (DL-EPR) and potentiostatic tests performed using a computer controlled system (0.5 M H2SO4 + 0.01 M KSCN aqueous solution). This procedure was optimized to investigate the austenitic stainless steels intergranular corrosion susceptibility, but it was found to be useful also for other localized corrosion mechanisms (e.g. pitting, stress corrosion cracking). Furthermore, in order to identify the main localized corrosion morphologies, specimens surfaces were investigated by means of a light optical microscope. Finally, results were compared with the localized corrosion resistance of two 22 Cr 5 Ni stainless steels (characterized by different á /ã ratios).

With increasing RF power the electron concentration in the plasma of ECR ion sources is decreasing in comparison to the ion concentration, so that the plasma is charging up positively. Direct injection of electrons into the ECR plasma can increase the electron charge density and the ion current yield. We have used ferroelectric cathodes to inject electrons into the Argon plasma of the CAESAR ion source at INFN-LNS (Catania, Italy). The cathode was placed at about 10 cm from the hot plasma and a bipolar high voltage pulse of 1.6 kV was used to trigger the electron emission. No additional acceleration has been provided. The use of the ferroelectric cathode leads to an increase of about 30% of the Ar8+ intensity, which has been monitored during the test. In addition, magneto-hydrodynamic instabilities in the ECR source were damped during and after electron injection.
