1. Analytical Chemistry for Chemical Engineers: A Hands-On Activity for Discovering Cooking Effects on Micronutrient Quantities in Raw and Cooked Vegetables

Abstract

This paper reports the quantification of Ca, Mg, and Fe as micronutrients in different vegetables (spinach, sugar beets, and carrots) from raw and processed samples. Simple extraction procedures, titrations, and spectrophotometric analysis were used to determine the amounts of micronutrients before and after cooking. From the obtained results, an ANOVA analysis was performed to determine statistical differences between the samples. Results show that the final amounts of micronutrients decreased after cooking for all vegetables.

Abstract

Model PCL homopolymers (anionic polymerization) were synthetized and chemically functionalized with anhydrides to improve their bio-activity. Modified polyesters were used to fabricate highly porous PCL membranes by leaching technique, reaching porosities values up to 86.1%. Microstructural characterization revealed that chemical modification did not affect thermal properties and mechanical stabilities of PCL membranes. In vitro assays were carried out by soaking samples in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution. By SEM-EDX and TGA analyses, it was observed that modified polyesters exhibited a hydroxyapatite layer over polymeric surfaces, with calcium/phosphorous ratio of 1.58, close to the value reported by literature for hard tissue. Abstract

Abstract: A one‐pot, two‐step method is applied to the controlled synthesis of polyacrylate‐b‐(polycaprolactone)2 three‐arm AB2‐type star block polymers. First, ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone is carried out in toluene using either stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2) or diphenyl phosphate (DPP) as catalyst, and a multifunctional initiator featuring one bromoester and two alcohol groups. Then, single‐electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) of methyl acrylate and isobornyl acrylate is conducted in the same reaction vessel after sequential addition of its typical reactants, apart from the (PCL)2‐Br macroinitiator generated in the first step, in either toluene/toluene + phenol or toluene/dimethyl sulfoxide solvent systems. DPP (the ROP catalyst) from the first step is found to take part in an acid–base reaction with tris[2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (the SET‐LRP N‐ligand) in the second part, but stoichiometry could be adjusted to avoid interference and keep the controlled nature of the polymerizations. Interestingly, the electrochemically active Sn(Oct)2 ROP catalyst does not interfere with the SET‐LRP process. Well‐defined poly(methyl acrylate)‐b‐(polycaprolactone)2 and poly(isobornyl acrylate)‐b‐(polycaprolactone)2 are thus synthesized through a simple and cost‐effective experimental procedure. A polymeric amphiphile was synthesised by addition of phosphonate groups to asymmetric terminal double bonds of polybutadiene giving α, β-unsaturated phosphonic acids. The polymer was characterized by NMR and FT-IR. The synthesis produces a complex cream-like O/W emulsion containing simultaneously water and toluene. The oil droplets are interconnected by polymer chains avoiding the dispersion of the emulsion in water. When this emulsion is spread on a crude petroleum overflow on water, the oil stain shrink and is absorbed by the cream-like emulsion. The resulting product can be manipulated more easily than the original oil to extract it from the water surface.

34. Synthesis and morphology of model PS-b-PDMS copolymers

Abstract

True model linear poly(styrene-b-dimethylsiloxane) PS-b-PDMS copolymers were synthesized by using sequential addition of monomers and anionic polymerization (high-vacuum techniques), employing the most recent experimental procedures that allow the controlled polymerization of each monomer to obtain blocks with controlled molar masses. The model diblock copolymers obtained were analyzed by using different techniques, such as size-exclusion chromatography, 1H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, small angle X-rays scattering (SAXS), and wide angle X-rays scattering (WAXS). The PS-bPDMS copolymers obtained showed narrow molar mass distribution and variable PDMS content, ranging from 2 up to 55 wt %. Compacted powder samples were investigated by SAXS to reveal their structure and morphology changes on thermal treatment In the interval from 30 to 200 °C. The sample with the highest PDMS content exhibits a lamellar morphology, whereas two other samples show hexagonally packed cylinders of PDMS in a PS matrix. For the lowest PDMS content samples, the SAXS pattern corresponds to a disordered morphology and did not show any changes on thermal treatment. Abstract

An extension for illustrating Newman projections for conformational structures was found when a projector broke at the Universidad Nacional del Sur in Argentina. Two transparencies, a small piece of chalk, and two thumbtacks were given to each student, and on the board both eclipsed and staggered conformations were put up. Students were to prepare the corresponding models and did so, with considerable success for ethane. Later new models for n-butane were developed.

It reflects that the directive in not justified under the exceptions of General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) and explains the implications of the directive in combating climate change.
