The stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) has been classified into fast (<250 ms) and slow (>250 ms) groups based on ground contact time (GCT) threshold values. However, there are gaps in the literature on how the 250 ms threshold value was found and which variables affect it. The purpose of this study is to validate the 250 ms threshold by investigating the factors affecting this threshold. For this purpose, force–time variables during a drop jump (DJ) with a force plate and achilles tendon (AT) muscle-tendon unit mechanical properties using shear-wave elastography in 46 recreationally active men were analysed. A regression tree analysis was conducted using R studio to classify GCT with correlated variables (p < 0.05). The new GCT threshold values (GCT < 188 ms, 188 ≤ GCT < 222 ms and GCT ≥ 222 ms) were found according to the lowest root mean square error of approximation value (0.1985) at reactive strength index. Comparisons of GCT groups showed significant differences in force, time, power variables and AT length (p < 0.05). AT length is the main variable differentiating GCT groups: Short AT results in a short GCT and long AT results in a long GCT. This study reveals that SSC can be classified into three groups using new GCT threshold values, offering a new perspective for SSC assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Repetitive shoulder movements during competitive training may cause changes in the strength of periarticular shoulder structures in preadolescent swimmers. Objective: To prospectively determine the effects of training on shoulder periarticular structures and muscle strength in preadolescent swimmers. Design: Prospective cohort study. Setting: Community‐based natatorium. Participants: Twenty‐four preadolescent swimmers aged 10–12 years. Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures: Measurements were repeated in three periods as preseason, midseason, and postseason. Ultrasonographic measurements (supraspinatus tendon thickness, humeral head cartilage thickness, deltoid muscle thickness, and acromiohumeral distance) were performed using a portable device and a linear probe. Shoulder (flexion, extension, abduction, internal and external rotation) and back (serratus anterior, lower, and middle trapezius) isometric muscle strength were measured with a handheld dynamometer. Results: Supraspinatus tendon thickness and acromiohumeral distance were similar in all periods (all p >.05); however, deltoid muscle and humeral head cartilage thicknesses increased throughout the season (p =.002, p =.008, respectively). Likewise, whereas shoulder muscle strength increased (all p <.05), back muscle strength was similar in all periods (all p >.05). Conclusions: In preadolescent swimmers, acromiohumeral distance and supraspinatus tendon thickness seem to not change; but humeral head cartilage and deltoid muscle thicknesses as well as shoulder muscle strength increase throughout the season. Background: The aim of this study was to compare the lower limb muscle strength in terms of gender and limb dominancy in prepubescent swimmers. Material and methods: Seventy-four prepubescent swimmers (mean age: 11.01±1.58 years; 42 boys; 32 girls) who were training for at least 8 hours a week and without current lower limb pain participated in the study. Isometric muscle strength of lower limb was measured by hand-held dynamometry. Independent samples-t test was used to determine the difference between genders, while paired samples-t test was used for dominant-nondominant side comparison. The significance level was accepted as p<0.05 Results: Knee flexion (p<0.001), extension (p<0.001) and ankle dorsiflexion (p=0.003) muscle strength were stronger on the dominant side than on the non-dominant side. Knee flexion/extension strength ratio was similar (p=0.957); while ankle plantar flexion/dorsiflexion strength ratio was significantly different (p=0.011). Boys swimmers had stronger isometric muscle strength in the dominant side together with knee flexion (p=0.018) and knee flexion extension strength ratio (p=0.007) than girls swimmers. Conclusions: Boys swimmers had higher dominant side knee flexion muscle strength compared to female peers. Gender and lower limb dominancy might be important for lower limb muscle strength to show varieties in prepubescent swimmers before planning a training program [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The first aim of this study was to determine the intensity of physical activity (PA) by an objective measurement method - using an accelerometer in Turkish prepubertal boys. The second aim of this study was to correlate the intensity of PA with body mass index (BMI). For this aim 40 boys were participated in this study. PA levels were measured by using GT3X-bt accelerometer for 5 consecutive school days. Mean BMI was found 17.56 ± 2.39. 101.20 ± 17.82 minutes was found as moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) per school day. Significant negative moderate correlation was found among vigorous PA, weight and BMI (r= -.39; -.38). The main finding of this study is: there is a relationship between vigorous PA and BMI in prepubertal boys. This means that the most effective intensity of MVPA in preventing the increase of BMI in prepubertal boys is the vigorous PA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/aim: Physical activity plays a key role in increasing and preserving bone mineral density (BMD). Effects on bone development associated with various nonweight-bearing sporting activities, such as swimming, are controversial. Different strokes used in swimming may also present as another factor. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of swimming and type of stroke on BMD in competitive adolescent athletes. Materials and methods: Seventy-nine swimmers between the ages of 10 and 21 years participated in this study. BMD was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at the lumbar vertebrae and left proximal femur. Daily calorie intake and calcium consumption, and measurements of calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphates, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) D), and osteocalcin were evaluated. Results: Preliminary results revealed that the type of stroke had no effect on BMD (P = 0.79). Additionally competitive swimmers did not have augmented bone mineral accretion, and in 13.9% of athletes low BMD was confirmed. Sixty percent of swimmers had either deficient or insufficient 25(OH) D levels and a low mean calorie (P = 0.542) and calcium (P = 0.038) intake was observed. Conclusion: This was the first study to evaluate the effect of swimming stroke on BMD. Although no effect was statistically shown, further studies with a larger series may determine this effect. Introduction and purpose: Although swimming is a sport that develops symmetrical body muscles, factors such as a history of injury, incorrect swimming technique, and over-training load may cause postural impairment in swimmers. Although swimmers are at risk for scapular dyskinesia caused by various factors, there is a few study about it. Nogueron et al. reported that prone foot position was higher in athletes in childhood. In addition, these children have been reported to be at risk for scoliosis. The aim of this study was to investigate posture in young swimmers. Methods: Young swimmers who had at least 6 hours of swimming training and 2 hours of dry land training per week and had no shoulder pain for the last 2 months participated in the study. In this study, a total of 74 swimmers (32 females, 42 males; mean age 11.01 ± 1.58, min-max 8-12) were evaluated. Inclinometer and Adams forward bending test were used to evaluate spine curvature and foot posture index was used for foot evaluation. In addition, observational scapular analysis was performed for the presence of scapular dyskinesia. Mean and standard deviation were given for descriptive statistics. Results: Individuals had a mean curvature of 2.2° ± 2.46 cervical, 4.4° ± 2.47 thoracic, 3.96° ± 2.1 lumbar curvature. According to the foot posture index evaluation, 50 patients had normal foot and 24 had prone foot. According to the results of scapular dyskinesia evaluation, 48 individuals had scapular dyskinesia, 30 of them had Type 1; 18 had Type 2 scapular dyskinesia. Conclusion: Posture analysis results provide information to clinicians and coaches about the current status of individuals at this age. Early diagnosis is important to prevent postural disorders to be symptomatic in later years. Given the change in body biomechanics with growth, the necessity of long-term follow-up should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Subjective measures such as well-being indices may be beneficial to balance fatigue and recovery on the fatigue continuum and awareness of well-being is considered a useful sign for identifying nonfunctional overreaching (NFOR) status. Recovery and neuromuscular fatigue process from training may be delayed because of the eccentric component during a stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) type activities and needs to be well monitored during fencing training and matches. The aim of the study is to investigate training monitoring of elite male fencing athletes aged 15-23 and to examine the variables that affect wellness during intensified training sessions. The study includes 16 elite men's saber fencers who train regularly and comprised of 139 data concentrated on training and 6 data engrossed on competitions. These data were examined throughout 2 different time sessions and an overall duration. Wellness scores, acute/chronic workload ratio (ACWR) and monotony scores were collected. The main findings of this study, in training loads a statistically significant difference was not observed between sessions, but in wellness scores, a significant difference was observed between sessions (acute load, p=0.861; hooper index, p=0.003). ACWR (p=0,6103) and monotony (p=0,4810) scores were not observed to be significant predictors of wellness both univariate and multivariate. In summation, this investigation concluded and reinforced the notion that the wellness score is a vital criterion in training and performance monitoring. It was discovered and noted that the continuity of the trainings and the increased intensity of the competition resulted in the wellness score to increase during the second session, Zindelik indeksi gibi subjektif ölçütler, yorgunluk ve toparlanmayı dengelemek için faydalı olabilir.

Gunes, S., Determination of In-Season Training Load Profiles of Professional Men's Basketball Team. Hacettepe University Graduate School of Health Sciences, Sports Sciences and Technology Master Thesis, Ankara, 2019. The purpose of this study was to determine and monitor the training load and fatigue values in basketball team players during training and competitions by some objective and subjective training monitoring tools throughout the first half of the 15-week competition period. Eleven professional male basketball players (mean age: 28,36±5,87 years, height: 197,45±8,31 cm, body weight: 91,65±13,68 kg) were voluntarily participated in this study. In order to determine the internal workload of the participants, rating of perceived exertion (s-RPE) scale was completed after each training session and competition, while wellness questionnaire and neuromuscular fatigue test (counter movement jump, CMJ) were applied at the beginning and at the end of each week. In accordance with the longitudinal data structure including the measurements obtained from the 15-week observations of the athletes, Generalized Estimation Equations (GEE) were used to model the wellness and jump height of the basketball players. From the models that include the week, acute:chronic workload ratio (ACWR), monotony and training load main and between effects; only the effect of monotony and ACWR on total wellness scores were statistically significant in the model (χ2= 4,734, p = 0,030; χ2=2,947, p = 0,086, respectively. RMSE=0,436). According to this result; when the monotony increased by 1 unit, total wellness status decreased by 0,114 units and this decrease was found to be statistically significant (p = 0,030). While acute and chronic workload ratio increased by 1 unit, total wellness value increased by 0,05 units (p = 0,086). Only the effect of monotony on the jump height was statistically significant (p = 0,037), but when the RMSE value (32,072) of the related model was examined, it was seen that the predicted performance of this model was not good. As a conclusion, coaches should increase weekly variation in training load and training variation to prevent monotony. Acute/chronic loads that affect players' well-being should be carefully monitored throughout the season. 84

The aim of this study was to investigate the potentiation effect of complex training method on jump height and reactive strength index. For this purpose, 10 recreational active males (Age:25 ± 2.53 years, Height: 186.81 ± 8.46 cm, Weight:84.68 ± 8.02 kg) who has 2 year strength training experience and lifts half squat with at least 1.5 times more than their bodyweight. Participants came twice to the labaratory with 48 hours apart. Anthropometrics measurments, 1RM half squat weight and optimal drop heights were determined during the first session. In the second session participants have applied the complex training method with 3 sets 90% 1-RM half squat and 5 vertical jumps. 15 sec later of the end of the last set the drop jump tests were began. The tests were continued at 2nd, 4th, 8th, 12th and 16th minutes after the third set of complex training protocol. Jump heights, ground contact times and reactive strenght index scores recorded for analysis. It was understood that parametric assumptions of the data obtained were fulfilled (p> 0.05). According this finding repeated measures ANOVA test was used to determine the differences of testing times of each parameter. The confidence interval was accepted as 0.05 in this study. As a result of the study, there is a statistically significant difference between the potentiation effect of the complex training and the jump height at the 4th measurement minute (p 0.05).

Bu çalışmada farklı spor branşlarında düzenli antrenman yapan 11-13 yaş arası kız çocuklarında, farklı aktivite türlerinin kemik yapı üzerindeki etkisi Kuantatif Ultrason ile incelenmiştir. Çalışmaya yaşları 11 ile 13 (Tanner, ergenlik öncesi II. evre ) arasında değişen en az 2 yıldır haftada 5 kez 2 saat çalışan; ritmik cimnastik (n=17, yaş= 12,56 ± 1,2 yıl), voleybol (n=17, yaş=13,2±0,8 yıl), yüzme (n=15, yaş=12,63±1,1 yıl) ve kontrol (n=20, yaş=12,62±0,91 yıl) olmak üzere toplam 69 denek katılmıştır. Deneklerin Kemik Yapıları Topuk Ultrasonometresi kullanılarak belirlenmiştir. Deneklerin diyetle günlük Ca alımı, beden kitle indeksleri (BKİ) belirlenmiştir. Ölçümler deneklerin dominant ve non- dominant topuklarından alınmış, elde edilen ultrason zayıflaması (Broadband Ultrasound Attenuation-BUA) ve t-skor değerleri karşılaştırılmıştır. Elde edilen veriler p0.05). Cimnastikçilerin BUA (84,16±11,3) ve t- skor değerleri tüm gruplardan anlamlı derecede yüksek (p0.05). Sonuç olarak, vücut ağırlığının taşınması ile uygulanan spor türlerinin (cimnastik, voleybol), 11-13 yaş arası kız çocuklarının kemik yapıları üzerinde olumlu etkileri olduğu saptanmıştır.Anahtar kelimeler: Kuantitatif ultrason (QUS), Ultrason Zayıflaması (Broadband Ultrasound Attenuation-BUA), kemik, egzersiz. The purpose of this study is to investigate the bone properties of pubertal children who participate in different types of activities regularly by quantitative ultrasound method.. 69 subjects, between ages 11-13, who performed sports for at least 2 years, 5 times a week and 2 hours per day were participants of the study: rhythmic gymnasts (n=17, age= 12,56±1,2 y), volleyball players (n=17, age=13,2±0,8 y), swimmers (n=15, age=12,63±1,1 y) and controls (n=20, age=12,62±0,91 y). Bone property measurements was calculated. The amount of calcium intake was estimated by asking the subjects to confirm the amount of milk and milk products they had consumed. Body mass index was performed. Measurements were taken from the subjects? dominant and non-dominant calcaneus bone. BUA and t-scores taken from the QUS were subsequently compared. For data analysis one way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc were used (at significance level ?=0,05). ?here was no signifance difference between dominant (F= 15,918) and non-dominant (F= 17,696) calcaneus bone (p>0,05). Rhythmic gymnasts had significantly higher (p0.05). The results of the study indicated that weight bearing activities such as rhythmic gymnastics and voleyball, had positive effects on bone properties in girls between ages 11-13.Key Words:Quantitative ultrasound (QUS), Broadband Ultrasound Attenuation (BUA), bone, activity. 83

Background: Repetitive shoulder movements during competitive training may cause changes in the strength of periarticular shoulder structures in preadolescent swimmers., Objective: To prospectively determine the effects of training on shoulder periarticular structures and muscle strength in preadolescent swimmers., Design: Prospective cohort study., Setting: Community-based natatorium., Participants: Twenty-four preadolescent swimmers aged 10-12 years., Interventions: Not applicable., Main Outcome Measures: Measurements were repeated in three periods as preseason, midseason, and postseason. Ultrasonographic measurements (supraspinatus tendon thickness, humeral head cartilage thickness, deltoid muscle thickness, and acromiohumeral distance) were performed using a portable device and a linear probe. Shoulder (flexion, extension, abduction, internal and external rotation) and back (serratus anterior, lower, and middle trapezius) isometric muscle strength were measured with a handheld dynamometer., Results: Supraspinatus tendon thickness and acromiohumeral distance were similar in all periods (all p > .05); however, deltoid muscle and humeral head cartilage thicknesses increased throughout the season (p = .002, p = .008, respectively). Likewise, whereas shoulder muscle strength increased (all p < .05), back muscle strength was similar in all periods (all p > .05)., Conclusions: In preadolescent swimmers, acromiohumeral distance and supraspinatus tendon thickness seem to not change; but humeral head cartilage and deltoid muscle thicknesses as well as shoulder muscle strength increase throughout the season., (© 2023 The Authors.
