Abstract

Modularity plays an important role in brain networks' architecture and influences its dynamics and the ability to integrate and segregate different modules of cerebral regions. Alterations in community structure are associated with several clinical disorders, specially schizophrenia, although its time evolution is not clear yet. In the present work, we analyze fMRI functional networks of $65$ healthy subjects (HC) and $44$ patients of schizophrenia (SZ), $28$ of them in a chronic state (CR) of illness, and $16$ at early stage (ES). We find clear differences in edges' weights distribution, networks density, community structure consistency and robustness against edge removal. In comparison to healthy subjects, we found that networks from SZ patients exhibits wider weight distribution, larger overall connectivity, and are more consistent in the community structure across subjects. We also showed that the networks of SZ patients tend to be more robust to edge removal than healthy subjects, while having lower network density. In the case of early stages patients, we found that their networks exhibit topological features consistently in between the ones obtained from the other two groups, resulting in a tendency towards the chronic group state., Comment: This work is the output of the Complexity72h workshop, held at IMT School in Lucca, 7-11 May 2018. https://complexity72h.weebly.com/

Abstract

The anomalies of the basilar artery are rare when compared with those ones pertaining to the circle of Willis vessels. Partial duplication or fenestration is rather common (0.6% to 1.8% in the angiographic descriptions); on the other hand, other anomalies, including complete duplication, hypoplasia and aplasia are exceptional. A rare case of segmental hypoplasia of the basilar artery in a 49-year-old man with transient vertebrobasilar (VB) ischemia, explored by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and digital angiography (DA), is reported. The embryology, the clinical relevance and the magnetic resonance findings of this arterial anomaly are discussed, with a review of other six reported cases. The appearance of a segmental aplasia was suggested in our case by MRI, and successively confirmed not only by time-of-flight MR-angiography (TOF-MRA) but also by DA. Only ultrathin-slice T2-weighted (w) images revealed the real finding of basilar artery (BA) hypoplasia; this sequence, not employed in previously reported cases, is mandatory to allowing a clear differential diagnosis between BA aplasia and hypoplasia. In conclusion, segmental hypo-aplasia of the BA is an exceptional embryological anomaly. This anomaly may be of clinical importance, and it should be considered among the potential causes of vertebrobasilar insufficiency in young adults. Abstract

Tool use is typically explored via actor-tool interactions. However, the target-object (that which is being acted on) may influence perceived action possibilities and thereby guide action. Three different tool-target-object pairings were tested (Experiment 1). The hammering action demonstrated the greatest sensitivity and therefore subsequently used to further investigate target-object pairings. The hammer was removed as an option and instructions were provided using pictorial (Experiment 2), written (Experiment 3), and both pictorial and written formats (Experiment 4). The designed tool is chosen when available (Experiment 1) and when removed as a choice (i.e., the hammer), participants perform the same action associated with the designed tool (i.e., hammering) regardless of instruction method (Experiments 2, 3, and 4).
