Competing Interests: Disclosures: To maintain the integrity of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has taken steps to ensure there is technical adherence to ethics statutes and regulations regarding financial conflicts of interest. Concerns regarding the potential for the appearance of a conflict are addressed or avoided altogether through preappointment and postappointment considerations. Individuals with particular vaccine-related interests will not be considered for appointment to the committee. Potential nominees are screened for conflicts of interest and, if any are found, are asked to divest or forgo certain vaccine-related activities. In addition, at the beginning of each ACIP meeting, each member is asked to declare their conflicts. Poliovirus can cause poliomyelitis and lifelong paralysis. Although wild poliovirus types 2 and 3 have been eradicated, wild poliovirus type 1 and vaccine-derived polioviruses are still circulating in multiple countries worldwide. In 2022, a case of paralytic polio caused by vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 was identified in an unvaccinated young adult in New York. This case and subsequent detection of community transmission underscored the ongoing risk for importation of poliovirus into the United States and risk for poliomyelitis among unvaccinated persons. However, previous Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations for adult polio vaccination were limited to adults known to be at increased risk for exposure. During October 2022-June 2023, the ACIP Polio Vaccine Work Group reviewed data on poliovirus surveillance and epidemiology, safety and effectiveness of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV), and other considerations outlined in the ACIP Evidence to Recommendations Framework. On June 21, 2023, ACIP voted to recommend that all U.S. adults aged ≥18 years who are known or suspected to be unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated against polio complete a primary polio vaccination series with IPV. The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University is introducing a longitudinal integrated clerkship for third year students in the Primary Care-Population Medicine Program as an alternative to more traditional clerkship models. In developing the longitudinal integrated clerkship, program faculty incorporated a historical perspective of medical education, modern knowledge about students' development of clinical skills, and educational science as it relates to faculty development and learner evaluation. The longitudinal integrated clerkship is being tailored to the fit the Brown University system; as such, it will be unique in its attention to population medicine, including its exposure of students to several distinct health care systems within a single geographic region, and integration of clinical training with completion of a Master's in Population Medicine.
