1. The Discourse of Digital Activism: A Linguistic Analysis of Calls for Action Concerning the Fashion Revolution

Abstract

In this study, we analyze the calls for action in a corpus of tweets with the hashtag #FashionRevolution, related to the 2020 Fashion Revolution week. We offer a linguistic analysis of the discourse of digital activism, relying on insights from pragmatics, discourse analysis, and argumentation. Our analysis focuses on the calls for action concerning the move towards a more sustainable fashion system, issued by account owners that do not have any impositive force on their audience. This leads us to showing that a variety of actors call for action through an imperative but also through other deontic structures. However, those responsible for carrying out the actions towards a fashion revolution are often left vague, in line with overall campaigning strategies. The motive for the call for action, crucial to convince, appears sometimes in an argument and/or through a reference to social or environmental sustainability. Through this case study, we then contribute to the linguistic analysis of digital activism, and to a better understanding of the challenges of bringing about behavioral change from a non-impositive position.

Abstract

The increasing traffic on roads poses a significant challenge to the structural integrity of bridges and viaducts. Indirect structural monitoring offers a cost-effective and efficient solution for monitoring multiple infrastructures. The presented work aims to explore new sensing strategies based on digital MEMS sensors integrated into an intelligent IoT infrastructure to predict the bridge deflection behaviour for indirect Bridge Structural Health Monitoring purposes. An experimental setup comprising a bridge model and vehicle equipped with a smart sensing node has been used to generate the dataset. Various models for bridge deflection estimation are deployed on the sensorized vehicle, exploiting edge AI capabilities of smart sensors. This study shows the potential of leveraging data-driven technologies to enhance the performance of low-cost sensors. Additionally, it demonstrates the viability of assessing static deflection shapes of bridges through indirect measurements on board vehicles, underlining the potential of this approach to make SHM more cost-effective and scalable.

Abstract

Stadium grandstands may experience high vibration levels due to the crowd action. Existing codes and guidelines used for the design and the assessment of grandstands highlight the need of an already ongoing revision, since there is a lack of information about the real nature of the crowd excitation and its accurate evaluation. This paper describes a highly improved computer vision method, based on the use of Digital Image Correlation (DIC), able to provide reliable estimates of the crowd induced loads on stadium grandstands. The effectiveness and the applicability of DIC is validated through a series of experimental tests held at the G. Meazza stadium in Milan. A first study with 27 jumping volunteers is carried out to assess the performance of DIC in a real environment. Then, the procedure is extended to the case of a larger crowd made of 108 individuals. In both cases, the forces estimated through image processing have been used in conjunction with the impulse response function of the stand to determine the resulting structural vibrations. The comparison between measured and computed vibrations provides a good agreement both in the time and the frequency domain.
