La presente investigación se centra en la semántica de los verbos de movimiento en inglés y en castellano. La primera parte de la tesis ofrece un análisis sistemático y detallado de los lexicones verbales de movimiento en ambas lenguas desde un punto de vista contrastivo. En este análisis, los patrones generales de lexicalización, los verbos de sendero y los verbos de manera son los objetos de interés. La segunda parte de la tesis explora el subdominio del movimiento humano empleando paradigmas experimentales, proporcionando evidencia empírica a algunas de las observaciones derivadas del análisis lingüístico llevado a cabo en la primera parte de la tesis., The present thesis addresses the semantics of English and Spanish motion verbs. In the first part of this dissertation, a systematic and detailed account of the semantics of English and Spanish motion verb lexicons from a contrastive point of view is provided. The patterns of general conflations are explored, as well as more subtle path notions and fine-grained manner information which can be conveyed by motion verbs in these two languages. Comparison between English and Spanish leads to the identification of both crosslinguistic similarities and differences. The second part of this thesis aims to investigate an important subdomain of motion, that of human locomotion, using experimental methods. These studies offer interesting insights into how English and Spanish organise their motion verb lexicons and into the complex semantics of human locomotion verbs. In addition, the findings provide empirical support for some of the observations from the linguistic analysis undertaken in the first part of this thesis.

La sociedad del conocimiento demanda a la universidad del siglo xxi que forme profesionales capaces de afrontar y satisfacer las necesidades laborales de esta. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo principal constatar cuáles son las competencias más importantes entre las competencias generales y específicas del Grado en Traducción e Interpretación de la Universidad de Murcia para el desempeño profesional en el mundo de la traducción y la interpretación. Con tal propósito en mente, se ha adoptado la metodología del estudio pionero de Martínez Castejón (2014) y se ha consultado a los distintos grupos de interés implicados: alumnado egresado, profesorado de la titulación, empleadores y profesionales del mundo de la traducción y la interpretación. Los resultados revelan puntos en común, así como diferencias interesantes entre las opiniones de los distintos colectivos con respecto a las competencias que consideran fundamentales para la empleabilidad en el mercado laboral actual., Knowledge society urges universities in the 21st century to train professionals so that they are able to face and meet the labor market needs. The present paper aims at finding out which general and specific competences of the degree in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Murcia are considered to be the most important for a good professional performance nowadays. We replicated the methodology in Martínez Castejón (2014) and asked three groups of interest: graduates, teachers, and translation and interpreting professionals and employers. Results reveal interesting points in common as well as differences among the opinions of the three groups in terms of which competences are considered essential for graduates to find a job and to adapt to today’s labor market.

It has been long noted that Spanish does not license the use of manner verbs when describing telic motion events, particularly when they involve boundary crossing (Aske, 1989; Slobin & Hoiting, 1994). The only exception to this constraint seems to be punctual acts, especially vertical boundary crossing situations, such as tirarse a la piscina (lit. ‘throw oneself into the pool’) (Naigles et al., 1998). Slobin (2004, 2006) has pointed out the low salience of manner in Spanish; the Spanish manner verb lexicon is not as extensive and frequently used as that of high manner salient languages like English, and as a result Spanish speakers are thought to attend less to manner than English speakers. In this study, we ask whether Spanish speakers would accept a manner verb in a boundary-crossing event, when manner of motion is made highly salient, either by contextual or by cultural means. Our research, though still preliminary, suggests both contextual manner salience and cultural manner salience increase the acceptability of Spanish manner verbs in boundary-crossing situations.

El trabajo cooperativo se perfila como el medio idóneo para fomentar un aprendizaje por competencias que incorpora tareas orientadas no solo a formar profesionales sino también a personas, capaces de responder a las necesidades de nuestra sociedad. Cada vez con más frecuencia, se incorporan al aula de traducción tareas que facilitan tanto el autoaprendizaje como el trabajo en equipo. Trabajar de forma colaborativa implica que los miembros del grupo cooperen, que cada cual asuma un rol y que todos colaboren para alcanzar objetivos comunes. De este modo, se pretende obtener mejores resultados finales. Este estudio tiene como objetivo principal constatar si el trabajo cooperativo repercute en la calidad de una traducción. La hipótesis de partida es que las traducciones realizadas en equipo tienen mejor calidad que aquellas realizadas de manera individual. Para corroborar esta hipótesis, las autoras evaluaron la calidad de cinco traducciones. A cada equipo de trabajo se le asignó una práctica, que el resto del alumnado también tenía que realizar. Después se contrastaron los productos del trabajo en equipo y los del trabajo individual. Los resultados revelan diferencias interesantes entre el primer y segundo grupo, que apuntan a que el trabajo en equipo influye en la calidad de una traducción. Nowadays, activities facilitating selflearning and encouraging teamwork are being carried out in the translation classroom. Teamwork implies that all members collaborate to achieve a common goal. In this way, it is expected to obtain better results than when using other teaching/learning methodologies. The present study aims at testing whether cooperative learning plays a role in the translation quality of students’ assignments. Our hypothesis is that translation assignments carried out in teamwork will be of a higher quality than those carried out individually. In order to test this hypothesis, five translation assignments were marked by the two authors of the paper. Each team received one assignment and the rest of the students did the other assignments which were not given to their team. Translation products by teams and by individuals were compared. Results showed that there are interesting differences between teamwork and individual work, which suggest that cooperative learning has an impact on translation quality.

Las nuevas tecnologías están a la orden del día en el ámbito académico universitario. Los alumnos tienen a su disposición herramientas como son el PC portátil, la Blackberry o el i-Phone. Como docentes de traducción observamos todos los días cómo los estudiantes interactúan en clase con estos dispositivos y nos percatamos de sus numerosas ventajas y notables inconvenientes. Llevamos a cabo un cuestionario anónimo con los alumnos de traducción de las asignaturas: 􀂾 Traducción General BII 􀂾 Introducción a la Traducción Especializada. El objetivo del presente estudio es averiguar qué percepción tienen los alumnos del uso de las TIC en el aula y posteriormente interpretar esos datos desde nuestro punto de vista como docentes.
