Metastatic bone disease (MBD) is a common problem among patients with malignant tumors. Bone tissue is the third most frequent site of metastasis, following the lungs and liver. The risk of bone metastases increases with the duration of the cancer disease. Early diagnosis should be implemented when a patient with malignant tumors reports symptoms such as bone pain, joint mobility disorders, or neurological symptoms. Attention should also be drawn to abnormalities in laboratory tests – elevated calcium levels in serum (hypercalcemia). In the case of fractures in atypical locations or occurring after low-energy trauma, oncological disease should be included in the differential diagnosis. The first-line imaging studies include X-rays and computed tomography. Magnetic resonance imaging is recommended in cases of diagnostic uncertainty or changes in the axial skeleton. Additionally, scintigraphy allows for determining the nature of the lesion and oncological staging (assessment of the number of metastatic lesions to the bones). Hybrid studies are also used, characterized by the best sensitivity and specificity parameters. If dealing with a tumor of unknown origin, the most important diagnostic step is biopsy, which should be performed by an experienced clinician at a bone cancer treatment center. The authors of the publication hope that the review presented below will help expand knowledge about MBD, optimize its diagnostic process, and improve medical care in Poland for patients with metastatic bone disease.

Introduction. Distal biceps tendon tears remain relatively rare, representing 3% of all biceps injuries and having an incidence of 1.2 per 100,000. A distal biceps tendon tear is usually caused by an eccentric load to a flexed elbow and despite mostly affecting 40-50-year-old men, it also occurs in physically active patients at a younger age. Aim. The purpose of this study was to analyze whether physically active patients return to a pre-injury level of activity after the surgical reconstruction of distal biceps tendon tears.Materials and methods. The study included 20 patients treated surgically due to distal biceps tendon tears. The data from patients’ medical histories were analyzed. The post operative outcome and the level of physical activity was assessed using the Author’s Physical Activity Questionnaire (APAQ), Oxford Elbow Score (OES) and QuickDASH. A follow-up was conducted on average after 45.8 (14.52) months. Results. All patients reported that they had returned to their pre-injury physical activity after surgery. Sixteen patients (80%) reached a pre-injury activity level, while 4 (20%) were unable to return to the same activity level. The reasons included fear of re-injury (n = 4) and pain in the operated limb during physical activity (n = 2). The most common physical activities were: weightlifting (n = 11, 55%) and martial arts (n = 6, 30%). Patients before the injury undertook physical exercise 4.32 (1.67) times a week, and post-injury 3.84 (1.95) times a week (p = 0.035). The median time spent doing physical activity during the week decreased from 360 (IQR, 285-450) minutes pre-injury to 300 (IQR, 180-420) minutes post-surgery (p = 0.028). The patients started returning to training sessions on average 12.05 (10.65) weeks after surgical treatment and a full return to physical activity was observed after 36 (33.87) weeks. In the Oxford Elbow Score, the average score was 46.74 (2.2), while the QuickDASH score was 1.58 (range, 0-6.8). Conclusions. The surgical treatment of a distal biceps tendon tear allows patients to return to physical activity in most cases.

Abstract There is now substantial evidence that zinc-finger proteins are implicated in adiposity. Aims were to datamine for high-frequency (near-neutral selection) pretermination-codon (PTC) single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; n = 141) from a database with > 550,000 variants and analyze possible association with body mass index in a large Polish sample (n = 5757). BMI was regressed (males/females together or separately) against genetic models. Regression for rs67047829 uncovered an interaction-independent association with BMI with both sexes together: mean ± standard deviation, kg/m2: [G];[G], 25.4 ± 4.59 (n = 3650); [G](;)[A], 25.0 ± 4.28 (n = 731); [A];[A], 23.4 ± 3.60 (n = 44); additive model adjusted for age and sex: p = 4.08 × 10–5; beta: − 0.0458, 95% confidence interval (CI) − 0.0732 : − 0.0183; surviving Bonferroni correction; for males: [G];[G], 24.8 ± 4.94 (n = 1878); [G](;)[A], 24.2 ± 4.31 (n = 386); [A];[A], 22.4 ± 3.69 (n = 23); p = 4.20 × 10–4; beta: − 0.0573, CI − 0.0947 : − 0.0199. For average-height males the difference between [G];[G] and [A];[A] genotypes would correspond to ~ 6 kg, suggesting considerable protection against increased BMI. rs67047829 gives a pretermination codon in ERV3-1 which shares an exonic region and possibly promoter with ZNF117, previously associated with adiposity and type-2 diabetes. As this result occurs in a near-neutral Mendelian setting, a drug targetting ERV3-1/ZNF117 might potentially provide considerable benefits with minimal side-effects. This result needs to be replicated, followed by analyses of splice-variant mRNAs and protein expression.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a significant issue affecting women, with severe consequences for society, the economy, and most importantly, health. Both personality and alcohol use disorders are phenotypically very complex, and elucidating their shared heritability is a challenge for medical genetics. Therefore, our study investigated the correlations between the microsatellite polymorphism (AAT)n of the Cannabinoid Receptor 1 (CNR1) gene and personality traits in women with AUD. The study group included 187 female subjects. Of these, 93 were diagnosed with alcohol use disorder, and 94 were controls. Repeat length polymorphism of microsatellite regions (AAT)n in the CNR1 gene was identified with PCR. All participants were assessed with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and completed the NEO Five-Factor and State-Trait Anxiety Inventories. In the group of AUD subjects, significantly fewer (AAT)n repeats were present when compared with controls (p = 0.0380). While comparing the alcohol use disorder subjects (AUD) and the controls, we observed significantly higher scores on the STAI trait (p < 0.00001) and state scales (p = 0.0001) and on the NEO Five-Factor Inventory Neuroticism (p < 0.00001) and Openness (p = 0.0237; insignificant after Bonferroni correction) scales. Significantly lower results were obtained on the NEO-FFI Extraversion (p = 0.00003), Agreeability (p < 0.00001) and Conscientiousness (p < 0.00001) scales by the AUD subjects when compared to controls. There was no statistically significant Pearson’s linear correlation between the number of (AAT)n repeats in the CNR1 gene and the STAI and NEO Five-Factor Inventory scores in the group of AUD subjects. In contrast, Pearson’s linear correlation analysis in controls showed a positive correlation between the number of the (AAT)n repeats and the STAI state scale (r = 0.184; p = 0.011; insignificant after Bonferroni correction) and a negative correlation with the NEO-FFI Openness scale (r = −0.241; p = 0.001). Interestingly, our study provided data on two separate complex issues, i.e., (1) the association of (AAT)n CNR1 repeats with the AUD in females; (2) the correlation of (AAT)n CNR1 repeats with anxiety as a state and Openness in non-alcohol dependent subjects. In conclusion, our study provided a plethora of valuable data for improving our understanding of alcohol use disorder and anxiety.

A keloid is a benign fibroproliferative hypertrophy of scar tissue that extends outside the original wound and invades adjacent healthy skin. Keloid formation is thought to be a complex process including overactivity of the interleukin-6 signaling pathway and genetic susceptibility. The aim of the study was to investigate possible associations between rs1800797, rs1800796, and rs1800795 polymorphisms in the promoter of the IL6 gene encoding interleukin-6 and the rs2228145 polymorphism in the IL6R gene encoding the interleukin-6 receptor subunit alpha with the predisposition to keloids in Polish patients. The genetic polymorphisms were identified either using Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) or sequencing of samples of genomic DNA extracted from blood leukocytes of 86 adult patients with keloids and 100 newborns comprising a control group. No significant differences in the distributions of IL6 or IL6R alleles or genotypes were found between keloid patients and newborn controls. There were also no significant differences between both groups in the distribution of IL6 haplotypes. The IL6 rs1800797, rs1800796 and rs1800795 and IL6R rs2228145 polymorphisms were not found to predispose individuals in the study group to keloids. IL6 promoter haplotypes were not found to be associated with a higher risk of keloids in the studied group.

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone tumor in children and adolescents. The standard and most effective treatment is wide resection of the tumor combined with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a genetically determined three-dimensional spinal deformity, which occurs in teenage patients and is mostly progressive. The basic management strategy is surgical treatment when the curve exceeds 50 degrees. However, the indications are different in oncologic patients. The aim of this study was to describe a case of adolescent scoliosis with osteosarcoma of the pelvis. The authors conducted a scoping review using PubMed and Embase to analyze the state of knowledge. The presented paper is the first report of pelvis osteosarcoma coexisting with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Treatment for this complex case finished with very good results, with no recurrence observed during the nine-year follow-up.

Abstract Bernstein fits implemented into R allow another route for Kruskal-Wallis power-study tool development. Monte-Carlo Kruskal-Wallis power studies were compared with measured power, a Monte-Carlo ANOVA equivalent and with an analytical method, with or without normalization, using four simulated runs, each with 60–100 populations (each population with N = 30,000 from a set of Pearson-type ranges): random selection gave 6300 samples analyzed for predictive power. Three medical-study datasets (Dialysis/systolic blood pressure; Diabetes/sleep-hours; Marital-status/high-density-lipoprotein cholesterol) were also analyzed. In three from four simulated runs (run_one, run_one_relaxed, and run_three) with Pearson types pooled, Monte-Carlo Kruskal-Wallis gave predicted sample sizes significantly slightly lower than measured but more accurate than with ANOVA methods; the latter gave high sample-size predictions. Populations (run_one_relaxed) with ANOVA assumptions invalid gave Kruskal-Wallis predictions similar to those measured. In two from three medical studies, Kruskal-Wallis predictions (Dialysis: similar predictions; Marital: higher than measured) were more accurate than ANOVA (both higher than measured) but in one (Diabetes) the reverse was found (Kruskal-Wallis: lower; Monte-Carlo ANOVA: similar to measured). These preliminary studies appear to show that Monte-Carlo Kruskal-Wallis power studies, based on Bernstein fits, might perform better than ANOVA equivalents in many settings (and provide reasonable results when ANOVA cannot be used); and both Monte-Carlo methods appeared to be considerably more accurate than the analytical version analyzed.

Abstract Number of children is an important human trait and studies have indicated associations with single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Aim: to give further evidence for four associations using a large sample of Polish subjects. Data from the POPULOUS genetic database was provided from anonymous, healthy, unrelated, Polish volunteers of both sexes (N = 5760). SNPs (n = 173) studied: (a) 69 from the chromosome 17 H1/H2 inversion; (b) six from 1q21.3, 5q21.3 and 14q21.2; and (c) 98 random negative controls. Zero-inflated negative-binomial regression (z.i.) was performed (0–3 numbers of children per individual (NCI) set as non-events; adjustors: year of birth, sex). Significance level p = 0.05 with Bonferroni correction. Statistically-significant differences (with data from both sexes combined) were obtained from highly-linked inversion SNPs: representative rs12373123 gave means: homozygotes TT: 2.31 NCI (n = 1418); heterozygotes CT: 2.35 NCI (n = 554); homozygotes CC: 2.44 NCI (n = 43) (genotype p = 0.01; TTvs.CC p = 0.004; CTvs.CC p = 0.009). (Male data alone gave similar results.) Recessive modeling indicated that H2-homozygotes had 0.118 more children than H1-homozygotes + heterozygotes (z.i.-count estimates ± standard errors: CT, − 0.508 ± 0.194; TT, − 0.557 ± 0.191). The non-over-dispersed count model detected no interactions: of importance there was no significant interaction with age. No positive results were obtained from negative-control SNPs or (b). Conclusions: association between the H1/H2 inversion and numbers of children (previously reported in Iceland) has been confirmed, albeit using a different statistical model. One limitation is the small amount of data, despite initially ~ 6000 subjects. Causal studies require further investigation.

Revision procedures and the resulting bone loss are a big challenge for orthopedic surgeons. Therefore, we checked what functional outcomes that 3D-printed cone augments can offer to patients with bone defects (Anderson Orthopedic Research Institute [AORI] classification type 2B and 3) in the knee and whether the use of cones can delay the necessity to use a megaprotheses. Data from 64 patients (M = 22; W = 42) who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) revision were included in the analysis. The Knee Society Clinical Rating System (KSS) and the range of motion in the knee joint were used for the functional assessment. The mean follow-up was 28 months (range: 18–44 months). The survival rate for aseptic loosening at follow-up was 100%. Infection occurred in two (3.1%) patients. The mean KSS score increased from 12.75 points preoperatively to 66.56 postoperatively (p < 0.001). The mean range of motion in the knee changed from 61.15° preoperatively to 115.93° postoperatively (p < 0.001). 3D-printed cone augments seem to be a good solution for patients requiring a TKA revision procedure. When used in patients with bone defects classified as 2B and 3 (AORI), they can be a good alternative, delaying the need for megaprotheses.

IntroductionSymmetry is one of the criteria of correct body posture in upright position. The spatial positioning of the pelvic girdle is crucial to it. Functional and structural asymmetries within the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex can have a significant influence on the structure and functions of many human body organs and systems. The aim of the study was to present the results of inclinometer measurements of selected landmarks of the pelvic girdle in young adults aged 19–29.MethodsThe analysis of occurrence of spatial pelvic asymmetry was based on the authors’ original, clinical classification and the significance of the body mass and height for the analyzed asymmetries. The inclinometer measurements of the selected landmarks of the pelvic girdle were performed in a sample consisting of 300 young individuals. Then, the occurrences of the spatial asymmetry of the pelvis were analyzed based on the authors’ own clinical classification using alignment symmetry of the iliac crests, the anterior superior iliac spines and the trochanters major as a criterion. Enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery is a protocolized approach to perioperative care, with the aim to optimize maternal recovery after surgery. It is associated with improved maternal and neonatal outcomes, including decreased length of hospital stay, opioid consumption, pain scores, complications, increased maternal satisfaction, and increased breastfeeding success. However, the pace and enthusiasm of adoption of enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery internationally has not yet been matched with high-quality evidence demonstrating its benefit, and current studies provide low- to very low-quality evidence in support of enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery. This article provides a summary of current measures of enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery success, and optimal measures of inpatient and outpatient postpartum recovery. We summarize outcomes from 22 published enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery implementation studies and 2 meta-analyses. A variety of disparate metrics have been used to measure enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery success, including process measures (length of hospital stay, bundle compliance, preoperative fasting time, time to first mobilization, time to urinary catheter removal), maternal outcomes (patient-reported outcome measures, complications, opioid consumption, satisfaction), neonatal outcomes (breastfeeding success, Apgar scores, maternal–neonatal bonding), cost savings, and complication rates (maternal readmission rate, urinary recatheterization rate, neonatal readmission rate). A core outcome set for use in enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery studies has been developed through Delphi consensus, involving stakeholders including obstetricians, anesthesiologists, patients, and a midwife. Fifteen measures covering key aspects of enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery adoption are recommended for use in future enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery implementation studies. The use of these outcome measures could improve the quality of evidence surrounding enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery. Using evidence-based evaluation guidelines developed by the COSMIN (COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments) group, the Obstetric Quality of Recovery score (ObsQoR) was identified as the best patient-reported outcome measure for inpatient postpartum recovery. Advances in our understanding of postpartum recovery as a multidimensional and dynamic construct have opened new avenues for the identification of optimum patient-reported outcome measures in this context. The use of standardized measures such as these will facilitate pooling of data in future studies and improve overall levels of evidence surrounding enhanced recovery after cesarean delivery. Larger studies with optimal study designs, using recommended outcomes including patient-reported outcome measures, will reduce variation and improve data quality to help guide future recommendations.

PurposeThe study aimed to test the feasibility of using tensiomyography to assess the functional status of the latissimus dorsi and erector spinae muscles in girls with C-shaped low back scoliosis.Materials and methodsTwenty-five girls aged 13-15 took part in an observational (cross-sectional) study. The examination involved measurements using the tensiomyography method (TMG). Two groups of muscles were tested: latissimus dorsi and erector spinae on the concave and convex side of low-grade scoliosis. The following indicators were analyzed: Td-delay time, Tc-contraction time, and Dm-maximal muscle displacement.ResultsThe analysis of Td revealed that values of this variable on the concave side were slightly lower compared to the convex side in both tested groups of muscles. Similarly, Tc values on the concave side were slightly lower than on the convex side of the curvature in both groups of muscles. In the case of Dm, lower displacement values and, consequently, greater muscle rigidity were observed on the concave side of the latissimus dorsi and the convex side of the erector spinae.ConclusionsThe TMG method can be potentially used to diagnose the functional condition of muscles in patients with low-grade scoliosis. There were differences between the functional condition of the muscles on the concave and convex sides of the curvature.

Abstract Background There are no scientific reports clearly describing the effectiveness of the High Tone Power Therapy in patients after ACL reconstruction. This caused that in own research an attempt was made to present the possibilities of using the selected method of electrical stimulation in the treatment of an orthopaedic patient. The aim was to assess the effectiveness of electro stimulation of the quadriceps muscle in patients after ACL reconstruction, with the use of High Tone Power Therapy. Methods In randomized controlled trial took part thirty-five men, aged 21–50, after ACL reconstruction. The tests were carried prior to and 6 months following the ACL reconstruction. After the surgery, the patients were randomly divided into experimental group (17 patients) with the High Tone Power Therapy in rehabilitation and control group (18 patients) without the High Tone Power Therapy. Patients were subjected to 6-month rehabilitation. Research tools included the measurement of muscle strength torque, ROM, knee and thigh circumference measurements, the Lysholm and the VAS scale. Results After applying HiToP, the analysis showed a statistically significant improvement of muscle torque (p = 0.041, Es = 3.71), knee circumference (p = 0.039, Es = 1.65), thigh circumference (p = 0.049, Es = 1.26), knee extension (p

Background: The five base-pair (bp) insertion/deletion (rs3039851) polymorphism in the PPP3R1 gene, which encodes calcineurin subunit B type 1, has been found to be associated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in hypertensive patients and in athletes. The aim of this study is to analyze the possible association between PPP3R1:rs3039851 polymorphism and left ventricular mass (LVM) in full-term healthy newborns. Methods: The study group consisted of 162 consecutive, full-term, healthy newborns. Two-dimensional M-mode echocardiography was used to assess LVM. The PPP3R1:rs3039851 polymorphism was identified by PCR-RFLP in genomic DNA extracted from cord blood leukocytes. Results: No significant differences were found between newborns homozygous for the reference allele (5I/5I, n = 135) and newborns carrying at least one 5D allele (n = 27) for LVM standardized for body mass, body length or body surface area (LVM/BM, LVM/BL or LVM/BSA, respectively). However, the frequency of PPP3R1:rs3039851 genotypes with a 5D allele (5I/5D + 5D/5D) among newborns with the largest LVM/BM or LVM/BSA (upper tertile) was statistically significantly higher compared with the prevalence in individuals with the lowest values of both indices (lower tertile). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the PPP3R1:rs3039851 polymorphism may contribute to subtle variation in left ventricular mass at birth.

Abstract This study assessed the impact of cumulative match time on the distribution of CD45+ cell subtests in the capillary blood of professional soccer players. Twenty-two males (aged 18–30 years) took part in the 36-week study. Participants playing up to 540 in cumulative match time and less than 30 min in each single match during the observation period formed the control group. White blood cell (WBC) phenotyping and creatine kinase (CK) plasma activity analyses were performed. Also, counts for WBC subsets were determined. No significant differences in the hematological parameters or lymphocyte and NK cell percentages were observed between the control and study groups. Changes in the T cell percentage were significant during weeks 11 and 30 and in Th and Tc cell percentages during weeks 2 and 26. Significant correlations were found between the cumulative match time and Th, NK, and B cell percentages; monocyte counts; and CK activity in the control group. However, for the study group, correlations were found between cumulative match time and Th, Tc, and B cell percentages; CK activity; and the CK ratio. Our study suggests that the distribution of CD45+ cells might be a useful tool for monitoring the immune status of professional soccer players.

Abstract Background The aim of the study was the assessment of the early impact of the selected kinesiotaping technique on the static stability of the knee joint in patients with ACL rupture on the basis of stabilographic parameters. Methods Sixty-two patients with a complete ACL rupture (32 patients in experimental group and 30 patients in placebo group) took part in the randomized single-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The ligament technique of KT was taken into consideration. Application of a KT tape only on the injured knee was to stabilize the knee joint. Experimental group had application of KT on the injured knee and the placebo group had a KT placebo application (with no tension on KT). Intervention and stabilographic test in both groups was the same. Research tools included measurements of static stabilographic parameters on stabilometric platform CQStab2P®. Outcome measures were assessed before intervention and after KT application. The analysis included evaluation of outcome variables – total path length, (SP), statokinesiogram path length in the XY axes (SPML, SPAP), and mean velocities in the XY axes (MV, MVML, MVAP). Results The results show a statistically significant shortening of the SP, SPAP and SPML variables only in experimental group. In the placebo group the results were not significant. The analysis also showed a significant improvement in all analyzed variables in the experimental group compared to the healthy side. In the placebo group, the results did not improve significantly after KT application compared to the healthy side. Conclusions Application o f KT in patients after ACL rupture shortened the total path length and improved the value of parameters in the frontal and sagittal planes in experimental group, which may suggest the potentially greater improvement in these parameters. By improving the values of the analyzed variables, the KT application is able to compensate for the loss of static stability of the knee. This study aimed to assess the post-effort transcriptional changes of selected genes encoding receptors for chemokines and interleukins in young, physically active men to better understand the immunomodulatory effect of physical activity. The participants, aged 16–21 years, performed physical exercise tasks of either a maximal multistage 20 m shuttle-run test (beep test) or a repeated speed ability test. The expression of selected genes encoding receptors for chemokines and interleukins in nucleated peripheral blood cells was determined using RT-qPCR. Aerobic endurance activity was a positive stimulant that induced increased expression of CCR1 and CCR2 genes following lactate recovery, while the maximum expression of CCR5 was found immediately post-effort. The increase in the expression of inflammation-related genes encoding chemokine receptors triggered by aerobic effort strengthens the theory that physical effort induces sterile inflammation. Different profiles of studied chemokine receptor gene expression induced by short-term anaerobic effort suggest that not all types of physical effort activate the same immunological pathways. A significant increase in IL17RA gene expression after the beep test confirmed the hypothesis that cells expressing this receptor, including Th17 lymphocyte subsets, can be involved in the creation of an immune response after endurance efforts.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as the third leading cause of death among adults, is a significant public health problem around the world. However, about 75% of smokers do not develop the disease despite the severe smoking burden. COPD is a heterogeneous disease, and several phenotypes, with differences in their clinical picture and response to treatment, have been distinguished. Metabolomic studies provide information on metabolic pathways, and therefore are a promising tool for understanding disease etiopathogenesis and the development of effective causal treatment. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the metabolome of the respiratory epithelial lining fluid of patients with COPD, compared to healthy volunteers, refractory smokers, and subjects with other lung diseases. We included observational human studies. Sphingolipids, phosphatidylethanolamines, and sphingomyelins distinguished COPD from non-smokers; volatile organic compounds, lipids, and amino acids distinguished COPD from smokers without the disease. Five volatile organic compounds were correlated with eosinophilia and four were associated with a phenotype with frequent exacerbations. Fatty acids and ornithine metabolism were correlated with the severity of COPD. Metabolomics, by searching for biomarkers and distinguishing metabolic pathways, can allow us to understand the pathophysiology of COPD and the development of its phenotypes.

Introduction Substance abuse significantly influences human health and may induce problems with social functioning worldwide. Numerous genetic and environmental risk factors, as well as their interactions, accelerate the development of drug addiction. Etiologically, the dopaminergic mesocorticolimbic reward pathways are related to psychoactive substance addiction, and the reward properties of heroin are connected with changes in the mesolimbic dopaminergic system. Objective The aim of this study is a haplotypic analysis of subjects addicted to polysubstance. However, with the knowledge that this is not a homogenous subgroup, it was decided to separate and analyze homogenous subgroups of subjects in order to find specific haplotypic variants among them. The subjects in the subgroups were addicted to heroin, and subjects with more than two relapses in the past two years. Material and methods The study group comprised of 301 polysubstance addicted rural male subjects. From this group, 2 homogenous subgroups of subjects were isolated and additionally analyzed: (1) a group of heroin addicted subjects (n=61), and (2) a group of heroin-addicted subjects with at least two relapses in the last two years (n=21). The group consisting of all polysubstance addicted rural subjects and both homogenous subgroups were analyzed against a control group of non-addicted subjects (n=300), matching gender and age. Five polymorphisms in the DRD2/ANKK1 region were analyzed: rs1076560, rs1800498, rs1079597, rs6276 in the DRD2 gene, and rs1800497 in the ANKK1 gene. Results A statistically significant haplotype association was found in analysis of the heroin addicted subjects, compared to controls, and two possible trends – when comparing the whole group of addicted subjects to controls, and in relapse subgroups, compared to the controls. Conclusions The results obtained showed that haplotypes indicate a part of the biological component of addiction.

Abstract Introduction An increased incidence of tinea capitis has been observed over the last few decades. Trichoscopy is a non-invasive, in-office method helpful in establishing the correct diagnosis in patients with hair loss and inflammatory hair disorders. The objective was to review and analyze current data on the trichoscopy of tinea capitis. Methods A systematic review of the literature was conducted using the PubMed, EBSCO and Scopus databases. The search terms included ‘tinea capitis’ combined with ‘trichoscopy’, ‘dermatoscopy’, ‘dermoscopy’, ‘videodermatoscopy’ or ‘videodermoscopy’. Results Of 326 articles, 37 were considered eligible for the quantitative analysis. The most characteristic (with a high predictive value) trichoscopic findings of tinea capitis included comma hairs (51%), corkscrew hairs (32%), Morse code-like hairs (22%), zigzag hairs (21%), bent hairs (27%), block hairs (10%) and i-hairs (10%). Other common, but not characteristic, trichoscopic features were broken hairs (57%), black dots (34%), perifollicular scaling (59%) and diffuse scaling (89%). Morse code-like hairs, zigzag hairs, bent hairs and diffuse scaling were only observed in Microsporum tinea capitis (8/29, 28%; 6/29, 21%; 4/29, 14% and 4/29, 14%, respectively). In Trichophyton tinea capitis, corkscrew hairs were more commonly detected compared to Microsporum tinea capitis (21/38, 55% vs 3/29, 10%). Conclusion The presence of characteristic trichoscopic features of tinea capitis is sufficient to establish the initial diagnosis and introduce treatment before culture results are available. Trichoscopy may be useful in distinguishing between Microsporum and Trichophyton tinea capitis.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of selected polyphenolic compounds: epicatechin, apigenin, and naringenin, administered separately or in combination with zinc (Zn), on the growth and development of the neoplastic process induced by 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA) in rats. The impact of supplementation with the above-mentioned compounds on the content of modified derivatives: 1-methyladenosine, N6-methyl-2’-deoxyadenosine, O-methylguanosine, 7-methylguanine, 3-methyladenine, 1-methylguanine, 2-amino-6,8-dihydroxypurine, and 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine in the urine of rats with mammary cancer was also assessed. Female Sprague-Dawley rats divided into 7 groups were used in the study: animals without supplementation and animals supplemented with apigenin, epicatechin, and naringenin separately or in combination with zinc. To induce mammary cancer, rats were treated with DMBA. Modified derivatives were determined by a validated high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry method. Based on the obtained results, it can be said that supplementation of the animals with naringenin inhibits the development and progression of the neoplastic process in rats treated with 7,12-dimethylbenzanthracene. Neoplastic tumors were found in only 2 of 8 rats (incidence: 25%) and were considered to be at most grade 1 malignancy. The first palpable tumors in the group of animals receiving naringenin appeared two–three weeks later when compared to other groups. The combination of zinc with flavonoids (apigenin, epicatechin, and naringenin) seems to stimulate the process of carcinogenesis. The level of N6-methyl-2’-deoxyadenosine and 3-methyladenine in the urine of rats was statistically significantly higher in the groups supplemented with apigenin, epicatechin, and naringenin administered in combination with Zn than in the groups receiving only polyphenolic compounds. In conclusion, supplementation of rats with selected flavonoids administered separately or in combination with Zn has an impact on the development of neoplasms and the level of modified nucleosides in the urine of rats with breast cancer. Our results raise the question of whether simultaneous diet supplementation with more than one anti-cancer agent may reduce/stimulate the risk of carcinogenesis.

ABSTRACT: The liver, as the main metabolic organ, plays a key role in many vital processes, including nutrient metabolism, fat digestion, blood protein synthesis, and endocrine management. As one of the immune organs, it has a remarkable ability to adequately activate the immune cells in response to metabolic signals. The anatomy of the liver ensures its close interaction with the gut so that nutrients and gut microbiota contribute to normal metabolism. In chickens, the intestinal microbiota plays an important role in supporting health and improving production parameters. The most effective method of stimulating the microbiota is to administer an appropriate bioactive compound during embryonic development. In ovo stimulation on d 12 of egg incubation involves the delivery of the substance into the air chamber. The aim of the study was to analyze the changes at the protein level after in ovo administration of the synbiotic on d 12 of egg incubation. Our study is the first to conduct a proteome analysis in liver after the administration of a Lactobacillus synbiotic in ovo. Eggs of broiler chickens were injected with a synbiotic—Lactobacillus plantarum with raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFO). On d 21 posthatching liver was collected. We performed analyses based on two-dimensional electrophoresis, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight, and MALDI Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance to obtain a global view of the hepatic proteome changes in response to in ovo injection. A representative pattern of significantly altered liver proteins was observed after stimulation with the synbiotic. A total of 16 protein spots were differentially expressed, with 5 downregulated and 11 upregulated spots. We conclude that the in ovo synbiotic treatment had the potential to accelerate the major energy-yielding metabolic pathways in the liver of adult broilers.

Introduction: Meniscofibular ligament (MFibL) is relatively unknown structure of posterolateral corner of the knee (PLC). In the last years some authors considered MFibL to be important structure playing a role in the biomechanics of lateral meniscus (LM). The aim of the study was to review the literature concerning MFibL anatomy, biomechanics, imaging, physical examination and clinical importance of this structure. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were searched with the following terms: „meniscofibular ligament”, “MFibL”. Additional relevant studies were sought in the bibliographies of included articles. Decisions concerning screening, inclusion and data extraction were performed independently by two authors of the review. Main findings: MFibL is a thickening of posterolateral capsule of knee joint coursing from the inferior part of the posterior one-third of LM to the head of the fibula. Mean length of MFibL is about 19 mm, mean width proximally 13 mm and mean width distally 8.5 mm. Thickness of MFibL is highly variable ranging from 2.6 to 6.1 mm and may be associated with morphology of proximal tibiofibular joint (PTFJ). It is possible to visualize MFibL on MRI and arthroscopy. MFibL probably plays a role in restricting anterior movement of LM during extension. MFibL biomechanics may be associated with PTFJ morphology, however there are no quantitative biomechanical studies. It is unknown whether its injury influences posterolateral stability of the knee. Up to date there are no distinct physical tests for assessment of MFibL injury. It was proposed to be associated with longitudinal LM injuries. Up to date we did not find studies reporting treatment outcomes apart from one case report. Conclusions: While anatomy and imaging of MFibL are relatively well described, there is still a great paucity of knowledge concerning its biomechanics, physical examination and clinical importance.
