Scientific evidence regularly guides policy decisions1, with behavioural science increasingly part of this process2. In April 2020, an influential paper3 proposed 19 policy recommendations (claims) detailing how evidence from behavioural science could contribute to efforts to reduce impacts and end the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we assess 747 pandemic-related research articles that empirically investigated those claims. We report the scale of evidence and whether evidence supports them to indicate applicability for policymaking. Two independent teams, involving 72 reviewers, found evidence for 18 of 19 claims, with both teams finding evidence supporting 16 (89%) of those 18 claims. The strongest evidence supported claims that anticipated culture, polarization and misinformation would be associated with policy effectiveness. Claims suggesting trusted leaders and positive social norms increased adherence to behavioural interventions also had strong empirical support, as did appealing to social consensus or bipartisan agreement. Targeted language in messaging yielded mixed effects and there were no effects for highlighting individual benefits or protecting others. No available evidence existed to assess any distinct differences in effects between using the terms physical distancing and social distancing. Analysis of 463 papers containing data showed generally large samples; 418 involved human participants with a mean of 16,848 (median of 1,699). That statistical power underscored improved suitability of behavioural science research for informing policy decisions. Furthermore, by implementing a standardized approach to evidence selection and synthesis, we amplify broader implications for advancing scientific evidence in policy formulation and prioritization.

The Bruns-Garland syndrome (diabetic amyotrophy) is a rare disorder that affects fewer than 1% of patients with diabetes. It is manifested by unilateral or bilateral pain, weakness and muscle wasting in the proximal part of the lower limbs (proximal motor neuropathy). We present a 72-year-old patient with long-term type 2 diabetes mellitus and with the Bruns-Garland syndrome. All the symptoms, including neurological manifestations, were reversible and resolved after the implementation of intensive treatment. Optimizing diabetes treatment, rehabilitation, pain management and the use of benfotiamine and alpha-lipoic acid preparations were crucial to accelerate the treatment effects of diabetic amyotrophy.

Proliferative lesions of the thymus are very rare in children and represent about 2% of mediastinal tumours. They may result from organ hyperplasia, the presence of cysts, or germinal and epithelial neoplasms. All of them can result in massive enlargement of thymus but differ considerably in terms of course and prognosis. This article presents the case of a 2.5-year-old girl with symptoms of respiratory tract infection not responding to antibiotics and with an enlarged thymus, which transpired to be true thymic hyperplasia. In this example, the details of the multidisciplinary diagnostic approach, differentiation, and treatment modalities in children were discussed. An algorithm of the proceedings, with respect to the child’s age, was proposed. Although the described pathologies are casuistic in nature, they indicate a necessity to increase vigilance towards symptoms that persist over a prolonged time with no response to standard treatment, because early diagnosis allows the application of appropriate treatment in advance.

Abstract Gender disparities persist in academic psychology. The present study extended previous investigations to social and personality psychology award recipients. We collated publicly available data on award winners (N = 2700) from 17 international societies from 1968 to 2021. Features of the award, including year given, type of award, seniority level, whether the award was shared with more than one winner, and gender/sex of the recipient were coded. Overall, men were more likely to be recognized with awards than women, but the proportion of awards won by women has increased over time. Despite this increased share of awards, women were more likely to win awards for service and teaching (which are generally viewed as less prestigious) rather than research contributions. These differences were moderated by year - women were more likely to win service or teaching awards, compared to research awards, after 1999 and 2007, respectively. Women were more likely to win awards at postgraduate/early career levels or open to all levels compared to senior awards. Findings suggest that women’s greater representation in academic psychology in recent years has not been accompanied by parity in professional recognition and eminence.

Nuclear Experiment ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Potassium-40 is a widespread isotope whose radioactivity impacts estimated geological ages spanning billions of years, nuclear structure theory, and subatomic rare-event searches - including those for dark matter and neutrinoless double-beta decay. The decays of this long-lived isotope must be precisely known for its use as a geochronometer, and to account for its presence in low-background experiments. There are several known decay modes for $^{40}$K, but a predicted electron-capture decay directly to the ground state of argon-40 has never been observed, while theoretical predictions span an order of magnitude. The KDK Collaboration reports on the first observation of this rare decay, obtained using a novel combination of a low-threshold X-ray detector surrounded by a tonne-scale, high-efficiency $\gamma$-ray tagger at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A blinded analysis reveals a distinctly nonzero ratio of intensities of ground-state electron-captures ($I_{\text{EC}^0}$) over excited-state ones ($I_{\text{EC}^*}$) of $I_{\text{EC}^0} / I_{\text{EC}^*}=0.0095\stackrel{\text{stat}}{\pm}0.0022\stackrel{\text{sys}}{\pm}0.0010$ (68% CL), with the null hypothesis rejected at 4$\sigma$ [Stukel et al., DOI:10.1103/PhysRevLett.131.052503]. This unambiguous signal yields a branching ratio of $I_{\text{EC}^0}=0.098\%\stackrel{\text{stat}}{\pm}0.023\%\stackrel{\text{sys}}{\pm}0.010$, roughly half of the commonly used prediction. This first observation of a third-forbidden unique electron capture improves understanding of low-energy backgrounds in dark-matter searches and has implications for nuclear-structure calculations. A shell-model based theoretical estimate for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of calcium-48 is increased by a factor of $7^{+3}_{-2}$. Our nonzero measurement shifts geochronological ages by up to a percent; implications are illustrated for Earth and solar system chronologies., Comment: This is a companion submission to Stukel et al (KDK collaboration) "Rare $^{40}$K decay with implications for fundamental physics and geochronology" [arXiv:2211.10319; DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.131.052503]. Potassium-40 is a widespread, naturally occurring isotope whose radioactivity impacts subatomic rare-event searches, nuclear structure theory, and estimated geological ages. A predicted electron-capture decay directly to the ground state of argon-40 has never been observed. The KDK (potassium decay) collaboration reports strong evidence of this rare decay mode. A blinded analysis reveals a non-zero ratio of intensities of ground-state electron-captures ($I_{\text{EC}^0}$) over excited-state ones ($I_\text{EC*}$) of $ I_{\text{EC}^0} / I_\text{EC*} = 0.0095 \stackrel{\text{stat}}{\pm} 0.0022 \stackrel{\text{sys}}{\pm} 0.0010 $ (68% C.L.), with the null hypothesis rejected at 4$\sigma$. In terms of branching ratio, this signal yields $I_{\text{EC}^0} = 0.098\% \stackrel{\text{stat}}{\pm} 0.023\% \stackrel{\text{sys}}{\pm} 0.010\% $, roughly half of the commonly used prediction, with consequences for various fields [L. In this work, we demonstrate the performance of a silicon-compatible high-performance self-powered photodetector.A wide detection range from visible (405 nm) to near-infrared (1550 nm) light was enabled by the vertical p-n heterojunction between the p-type antimony telluride (Sb2Te3) thin film and the n-type silicon (Si) substrates. A Sb2Te3 film with a good crystal quality, low density of extended defects, proper stoichiometry, p-type nature, and excellent uniformity across a 4-inch wafer was achieved by atomic layer deposition at 80 {\deg}C using (Et3Si)2Te and SbCl3 as precursors. The processed photodetectors have a low dark current (~20 pA), a high responsivity of (~4.3 Ampere per Watt at 405 nm and ~150 milli-Ampere per Watt at ~1550 nm), a peak detectivity of ~1.65*10^14 Jones, and a quick rise time of ~98 us under zero bias voltage. Density functional theory calculations reveal a narrow, near-direct, type-II bandgap at the heterointerface that supports a strong built-in electric field leading to efficient separation of the photogenerated carriers. The devices have long-term air stability and efficient switching behavior even at elevated temperatures. These high-performance self-powered p-Sb2Te3/n-Si heterojunction photodetectors have immense potential to become reliable technological building blocks for a plethora of innovative applications in next-generation optoelectronics, silicon-photonics, chip-level sensing, and detection., Comment: 11 pages, 1 Table, 5 Figures, Supporting Information

Science - Abstract
Abstract Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major public health threat, reducing treatment options for infected patients. AMR is promoted by a lack of access to rapid antibiotic susceptibility tests (ASTs). Accelerated ASTs can identify effective antibiotics for treatment in a timely and informed manner. We describe a rapid growth-independent phenotypic AST that uses a nanomotion technology platform to measure bacterial vibrations. Machine learning techniques are applied to analyze a large dataset encompassing 2762 individual nanomotion recordings from 1180 spiked positive blood culture samples covering 364 Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates exposed to cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones. The training performances of the different classification models achieve between 90.5 and 100% accuracy. Independent testing of the AST on 223 strains, including in clinical setting, correctly predict susceptibility and resistance with accuracies between 89.5% and 98.9%. The study shows the potential of this nanomotion platform for future bacterial phenotype delineation.

The presence of a neutron halo in 15C has been demonstrated in several reaction experiments at intermediate energies. In the present study, the dynamical effects of this structure are observed for the first time at Coulomb barrier energies in the 15C + 208Pb quasi-elastic scattering at Elab=65 MeV, measured at the HIE-ISOLDE facility, CERN using the high-granularity detector array GLORIA. A combined continuum discretised coupled channels and coupled reaction channels calculation describes the data well and significant coupling effects due both to breakup and single-neutron stripping are identified.

AbstractLeeches feeding on invertebrates are an important component of freshwater communities, including those dominated by fish, but the effects of fish on their abundance and distribution are not well explored. The relative densities and assemblage structure of two leech families, Erpobdellidae and Glossiphoniidae, were studied from May to August 2014 in ponds stocked with low biomass densities of young common carp Cyprinus carpio, too small to prey on leeches (low-fish ponds), and in ponds containing high biomass densities of large (one- or two-year-old) carp (high-fish ponds), using two types of activity traps (placed either on the bottom or near the water surface). The most common and numerous species were Erpobdella octoculata, Helobdella stagnalis, and Erpobdella nigricollis. The traps near the water surface captured relatively small numbers of leeches, yet the catches showed that in summer some of the leeches moved to the upper layers of the water column, which was free of macrophytes. No differences in leech species richness or diversity were found with respect to fish status of ponds; however, bottom erpobdellids were more abundant in high-fish ponds. Redundancy analysis identified the fish status of the ponds and total nitrogen concentration in water as the only significant variables explaining the distribution of leeches among ponds. Species distribution was nested, but the nestedness pattern was not affected by the fish status of the pond. While fish are generally believed to adversely affect macroinvertebrate diversity and abundance, our study shows that some predatory leech species can persist in the presence of fish and possibly indirectly benefit from it.

The aim of the study was to check the integument and alimentary tract of Theromyzon for the occurrence of fungi. Moreover, the mycological purity of water sources from which leeches were collected was analyzed. The potential role of the duck leech Theromyzon maculosum in transmitting pathogenic fungi has not been studied until now. Mycological analyses were performed according to the procedure approved in mycological diagnostic laboratories, using classical diagnostic methods (macro- and microcultures, microscopic observations). In total, 22 species of yeasts were detected. The specimens belong to eight genera: Candida, Citeromyces, Debaryomyces, Kluyveromyces, Lodderomyces, Pichia, Saccharomyces and Saccharomycodes. Overall, 18 species of fungi were isolated from leeches Theromyzon maculosum, including seven species from the integument and 11 species from the gastrointestinal system. Among fungi isolated from body integument, fungi of the genus Candida were dominant, whereas in the gastrointestinal system, the genus Saccharomyces dominated. From the river waters, nine fungi species were isolated, and yeasts of the genera Candida and Kluyveromyces dominated. Isolation of the same species of microfungi from the integument of leeches and the river water suggests that Theromyzon maculosum may be a potential vector of pathogenic yeasts for vertebrates living in the same ecosystems and for humans.

Potassium-40 ($^{40}$K) is a long-lived, naturally occurring radioactive isotope. The decay products are prominent backgrounds for many rare event searches, including those involving NaI-based scintillators. $^{40}$K also plays a role in geochronological dating techniques. The branching ratio of the electron capture directly to the ground state of argon-40 has never been measured, which can cause difficulty in interpreting certain results or can lead to lack of precision depending on the field and analysis technique. The KDK (Potassium (K) Decay (DK)) collaboration is measuring this decay. A composite method has a silicon drift detector with an enriched, thermally deposited $^{40}$K source inside the Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer. This setup has been characterized in terms of energy calibration, gamma tagging efficiency, live time and false negatives and positives. A complementary, homogeneous, method is also discussed; it employs a KSr$_2$I$_5$:Eu scintillator as source and detector., Comment: 20 pages, 24 figures, Submitted to NIM A

The importance and benefits of strategic management in the business sphere are declared in studies worldwide. It represents an extensive area for research. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the strategy formulation activities as well as the strategic management tools and techniques used by Slovak companies. Data on 365 manufacturing companies were obtained through an online questionnaire during 2020–2021. Selected methods of inductive statistics helped to analyze the data (the Pearson chi-square test and interval estimates for population proportion). The results show that the potential of analyzed strategy formulation activities is not filled in the Slovak companies. Enterprises only perform certain activities, and attention is focused mainly on setting strategic goals. It prevails a small orientation to sustainable development in strategic goals (only 22% of enterprises). The most used strategic management tools and techniques consist of an analysis of company resources, SWOT analysis, and customer satisfaction. From the point of view of the manufacturing area, no significant differences are defined in the use of the tools. The future management directions should include a variety of strategic management tools from the external environment. At the same time, the given tools should be supplemented with newer strategic tools ensuring flexibility and adaptation to dynamically changing conditions. AcknowledgmentWe wish to thank project VEGA: Scientific Grant Agency of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic (Project No.1/0093/23 Research on the circular economy potential in the Slovak business environment in the production of innovative products based on recycled materials wood – rubber – plastic).

The purpose of the essay is to introduce the figure of a contemporary Spanish author, Vicente Luis Mora, and his novel Centroeuropa to the Polish literary researchers, as well as to analyze the special character of this novel in terms of reading agreement and the most adequate terminology concerning the literary genre, to which it belongs, based on the form oftypological characteristics of a novel that includes ten essential points: paratext, plot, narration, time structure, poetics, the question of mimesis, the loyalty of history towards History, metatextuality, ideological character and the strategies used by the author. On the basis of these reflections it can be concluded that Centroeuropa by Vicente Luis Mora is a metanovel about a man who is looking for his way in a breakthrough moment in the history of Europe, between the 18th and 19th century, in the declining feudal‑absolutist Prussia and the emerging liberal‑capitalist Prussia, in the embryonic society, where economic and political norms haven’t been fully constructed yet and women are not full‑fledged members of society. Centroeuropa is a multi‑dimensional novel inspired by the past of Central Europe, but – above all – a metanovel about writing and its servitude.

Layered materials (LMs) such as graphene or MoS$_2$ have recently attracted a great deal of interest. These materials offer unique functionalities due to their structural anisotropy characterized by weak van der Waals bonds along the out-of-plane axis and covalent bonds in the in-plane direction. A central requirement to access the structural information of complex nanostructures built upon LMs is to control the relative orientation of each sample prior to their inspection e.g. with Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). However, developing sample preparation methods that result in large inspection areas and ensure full control over the sample orientation while avoiding damage during the transfer to the TEM grid is challenging. Here we demonstrate the feasibility of deploying ultramicrotomy for the preparation of LM samples in TEM analyses. We show how ultramicrotomy leads to the reproducible large-scale production of both in-plane and out-of-plane cross-sections, with bulk vertically-oriented MoS$_2$ and WS$_2$ nanosheets as proof of concept. The robustness of the prepared samples is subsequently verified by their characterization by means of both high-resolution TEM and Raman spectroscopy measurements. Our approach is fully general and should find applications for a wide range of materials as well as of techniques beyond TEM, thus paving the way to the systematic large-area mass-production of cross-sectional specimens for structural and compositional studies.

Science - Abstract
Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

Nuclear Experiment ,Nuclear Theory - Abstract
In this study, the angular distribution of the 16O+10B elastic scattering was measured at Elab (16O)= 24 MeV. In addition to our experimental data, this nuclear system was theoretically analyzed at different energies to study the dynamics of scattering for this system. The data were analyzed within the framework of the double-folding optical potential model., Comment: 8 FIGURES,3 TABLES

Mathematics - Probability ,60K25 - Abstract
Let $(Q_t)$ be a stationary workload process, and $r(t)$ the correlation coefficient of $Q_0$ and $Q_t$. In a series of previous papers (i) the transform of $r(\cdot)$ has been derived for the case that the driving process is spectrally-positive (sp) or spectrally-negative (sn) Levy, (ii) it has been shown that for sp-Levy and sn-Levy input $r(\cdot)$ is positive, decreasing, and convex, (iii) in case the driving Levy process is light-tailed (a condition that is automatically fulfilled in the sn case), the decay of the decay rate agrees with that of the tail of the busy period distribution. In the present paper we first prove the conjecture that property (ii) carries over to spectrally two-sided Levy processes; we do so for the case the Levy process is reflected at 0, and the case it is reflected at 0 and $K > 0$. Then we focus on queues fed by Markov additive processes (maps). We start by the establishing the counterpart of (i) for sp- and sn-maps. Then we refute property (ii) for maps: we construct examples in which the correlation coefficient can be (locally) negative, decreasing, and concave. Finally, in relation to (iii), we point out how to identify the decay rate of $r(\cdot)$ in the light-tailed map case, thus showing that the tail behavior of $r(\cdot)$ does not necessarily match that of the busy-period tail; singularities related to the transition rate matrix of the background Markov chain turn out to play a crucial role here., Comment: 20 pages

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
A newly developed segmented YSO scintillator detector was implemented for the first time at the RI-beam Factory at RIKEN Nishina Center as an implantation-decay counter. The results from the experiment demonstrate that the detector is a viable alternative to conventional silicon-strip detectors with its good timing resolution and high detection efficiency for ${\rm \beta}$ particles. A Position-Sensitive Photo-Multiplier Tube (PSPMT) is coupled with a $48\times48$ segmented YSO crystal. To demonstrate its capabilities, a known short-lived isomer in $^{76}$Ni and the ${\rm \beta}$ decay of $^{74}$Co were measured by implanting those ions into the YSO detector. The half-lives and ${\rm \gamma}$-rays observed in this work are consistent with the known values. The ${\rm \beta}$-ray detection efficiency is more than 80~\% for the decay of $^{74}$Co., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, accepted to NIMA on May 7, 2019

- Abstract
Scientific evidence regularly guides policy decisions1, with behavioural science increasingly part of this process2. In April 2020, an influential paper3 proposed 19 policy recommendations (‘claims’) detailing how evidence from behavioural science could contribute to efforts to reduce impacts and end the COVID-19 pandemic. No available evidence existed to assess any distinct differences in effects between using the terms ‘physical distancing’ and ‘social distancing’.

Summary: The bone marrow (BM) is a complex microenvironment, coordinating the production of billions of blood cells every day. Despite its essential role and its relevance to hematopoietic diseases, this environment remains poorly characterized. Here we present a high-resolution characterization of the niche in health and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) by establishing a single-cell gene expression database of 339,381 BM cells. We found significant changes in cell type proportions and gene expression in AML, indicating that the entire niche is disrupted. We then predicted interactions between hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) and other BM cell types, revealing a remarkable expansion of predicted interactions in AML that promote HSPC-cell adhesion, immunosuppression, and cytokine signaling. In particular, predicted interactions involving transforming growth factor β1 (TGFB1) become widespread, and we show that this can drive AML cell quiescence in vitro. Our results highlight potential mechanisms of enhanced AML-HSPC competitiveness and a skewed microenvironment, fostering AML growth.

Is it possible to predict COVID-19 vaccination status prior to the existence and availability of COVID-19 vaccines? Here, we present a logistic model by regressing decisions to vaccinate in late 2021 on lagged sociodemographic, health, social, and political indicators from 2019 in a sample of New Zealand adults aged between 18 and 94 (Mage = 52.92, SD = 14.10; 62.21% women; N = 5324). We explain 31% of the variance in decision making across New Zealand. Significant predictors of being unvaccinated were being younger, more deprived, reporting less satisfaction with general practitioners, lower levels of neuroticism, greater levels of subjective health and meaning in life, higher distrust in science and in the police, lower satisfaction in the government, as well as political conservatism. Additional cross-sectional models specified using the same, and additional COVID-19-specific factors are also presented. These findings reveal that vaccination decisions are neither artefacts of context nor chance, but rather can be predicted in advance of the availability of vaccines. Keywords: COVID-19, vaccination, Aotearoa New Zealand, Introduction At the time of writing in December 2021, Aotearoa New Zealand had just transitioned to a 'traffic light' system for managing COVID-19 in which freedoms were introduced for vaccinated [...]
