The hemipteran infraorder Cicadomorpha (cicadas, leafhoppers, treehoppers and spittlebugs) comprises more than 30,000 described extant species in 3,783 genera, 13 families and 3 superfamilies: Cicadoidea, Cercopoidea and Membracoidea. Here, we summarize and discuss data on the number of testicular follicles in 103 species belonging to 84 genera and 9 families of Cicadoidea (Tettigarctidae and Cicadidae), Cercopoidea (Aphrophoridae, Cercopidae and Ischnorhinidae) and Membracoidea (Aetalionidae, Cicadellidae, Membracidae and Myerslopiidae), as well as the number of ovarioles in 65 species belonging to 56 genera of the same families, except for Tettigarctidae, Aetalionidae, and Myerslopiidae, for which no such data were available. Almost 83% of the species and 81% of the genera studied belong to the family Cidadellidae. In general, the number of follicles in Cicadomorpha ranges from 1 to "about 100 or more" per testis, and the number of ovarioles from 3 to over 70-80 per ovary. The highest numbers are characteristic of Cicadoidea and Cercopoidea, with significantly higher values in the former superfamily. In Membracoidea, both follicle and ovariole numbers vary within markedly narrower limits. Most taxa are dominated by testes each consisting of 6 follicles, and the ovaries each consisting of 6 ovarioles. These character states are considered ancestral for Cicadomorpha, and possibly for Auchenorrhyncha as a whole.

The genus Myopsalta Moulds, 2012 comprises 23 species endemic to Australia. A new species, Myopsalta bisonabilis sp. n. is described from near Port Germein to near Port Pirie, the Greater Adelaide region and from Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. The genus Samaecicada Popple and Emery comprised a single species that occurs in the Sydney Basin bioregion of central New South Wales. Here I describe a new species, Samaecicada mallee sp. n. from the mallee vegetation of south-eastern South Australia. A new species of the cicada genus Chrysocicada Boulard, 1989 is described. Chrysocicada inflata sp. n., is a straw-coloured grass cicada inhabiting coastal regions from Exmouth to Karratha in northern Western Australia. Macrotristria kathhillodes sp. n. is described from northern and central Queensland. It is distinguished from the similar Macrotristria angularis Germar by its markings and a difference in the apex of the theca. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent capture of two female specimens of the cicada species Yoyetta ngarabal Popple and Emery allows this description to complement that of the male. Due to particular variations in the hindwing plaga of Y. ngarabal, the definition for the plaga of species in the Yoyetta abdominalis (Distant) species group is extended to "opaque and almost entirely white or pink-orange along the majority of the jugal fold". Two new species of the cicada genus Tryella Moulds are described. Tryella fumipennis sp. n., is a distinctive cicada with partially "smoky' fore wings inhabiting areas of small shrubs and trees around central Western Australia. Specimens of T. wuggubun sp. n., have two distinctive orange-black and paler coloured variants living in grasses south of Kununurra in northern Western Australia and in the Victoria River region of the Northern Territory. A new genus, Pericallea gen. n., is described to accommodate the new species Pericallea katherina sp. n., a species endemic to inland districts of south-western Western Australia. The singing cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) of Bulgaria were poorly known. There are published records for 14 species: Cicada orni, Lyristes plebejus, Cicadatra atra, Cicadatra hyalina, Cicadatra persica, Cicadetta montana, Cicadetta mediterranea, Dimissalna dimissa, Oligoglena tibialis, Tympanistalna gastrica, Pagiphora annulata, Saticula coriaria, Tibicina haematodes and Tibicina steveni.Two species from this list were doubtful in the beginning of our study, since Tympanistalna gastrica is distributed in central and southern Portugal and Saticula coriaria is a north African species.We checked three major institutional collections housed in Sofia, Bulgaria: the National Museum of Natural History (SOFM), the Institute of Zoology (ZISB) and the Biology Faculty of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" (BFUS). We confirmed 11 of the species mentioned in literature, except Cicadetta mediterranea and found two additional species: Cicadatra platyptera and Cicadetta macedonica (the specimens in BFUS were bioacoustically confirmed).Based on this knowledge, we further investigated the singing cicadas of Bulgaria with the use of morphological and bioacoustic methods in the years 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2018 and 2019. We were not able to confirm the presence of Cicadatra persica and Cicadetta mediterranea, but found three additional species: Cicadetta brevipennis s. lat., Cicadetta cantilatrix and Tettigettula pygmea. Using the bioacoustic methods, we also detected unknown singing patterns, which could belong to three or four additional taxa, which need to be described.The Bulgarian fauna of singing cicadas at the moment consists of 16 confirmed and 3-4 potential species.

Maculaferrum blaisi is part of a new collection assembled during recent fieldwork in the Redmond Formation, Labrador, Canada, near Schefferville. It consists in a single isolated forewing whose venational characters allow a classification to Tettigarctinae at the subfamily level. Classification at a higher level remains uncertain since it displays a combination of characters supposedly unique to tribes Protabanini, Meunierini, and Tettigarctini. Thus, this discovery adds credence to suggestions of a revision of the definitions of these tribes since they seem to be based on many convergent or plesiomorphic characters. Remnants of a spotted pattern on the wing membrane and probable setae along some veins are also preserved. Observations of the holotype’s fine anatomical characters have been facilitated by the use of Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI), an emerging method for the visualization of compression and impression fossils. Considering that the estimated age of the Redmond Formation is the Cenomanian (Late Cretaceous), the discovery of M. blaisi contributes to a very recent expansion of the tettigarctid fossil record that fills a gap between Early Cretaceous and Cenozoic genera. It suggests that hairy cicadas maintained a global distribution and thrived in a variety of climate regimes well into the Late Cretaceous, and that their competitive exclusion by singing cicadas occurred definitely closer to the end of the Cretaceous, or even during the Cenozoic. This discovery is only the start of a thorough description of the recently expanded entomofauna in the Cretaceous of Labrador.

We redescribe the cicada Psaltoda fumipennis Ashton, and designate a neotype for the species from northern Queensland, Australia. Psaltoda seismella sp. n., a species closely allied to P. fumipennis, and also from northern Queensland, is newly described. First documentation of the distinctive calling songs of both species is provided. The geographical distribution and overlap zone of the two species within the Wet Tropics region is discussed, especially in relation to the Black Mountain Corridor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The single described species of Jassopsaltria, J. rufifacies Ashton is re-described, four new species of Jassopsaltria Ashton are described from Western Australia (J. aeroides sp. n., J. cinnamomea sp. n., J. minilyaensis sp. n., J. gracilens sp. n.) and one new species is described from the Northern Territory (J. danielsorum sp. n.). Cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) are insects characterized mainly by the sound they emit, which makes their presence evident in natural and urban areas. Beyond this, we know little about the species that occur in the neotropical region, including Brazil. This is the first report of species of Carineta in Goiás State, Brazil. The collections were made with light traps in two close localities in the core area of the Cerrado biome. We sampled the species Carineta durantoni Boulard, 1986, C. gemella Boulard, 1986, C. rufescens (Fabricius, 1803) and C. spoliata (Walker, 1858). Images of these species and their current distribution are presented here.

Yoyetta robertsonae sp. n. is described from the Central and Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. Its song is analysed and compared with that of other Yoyetta Moulds species. Yoyetta robertsonae forms part of the Y. tristrigata species group and a morphological cladistic analysis is employed to investigate the phylogenetic relationships of this group. Abstract A new tettigarctid, Hpanraais problematicus gen. et sp. nov. is described based on a forewing from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. This new genus and species significantly differs from other fossil and extant tettigarctids in the details of tegmen venation. The fossil represents an enigmatic and very peculiar Tettigarctidae known from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber from Kachin province, and it not only enriches the knowledge of the diversity of Mesozoic Tettigarctidae but also provides some key morphological details of the forewing in this family. The ultrastructure of mature spermatozoa of three cicada species, Subpsaltria yangi, Karenia caelatata, and Platypleura kaempferi, was investigated using epifluorescence and transmission electron microscopies. This is the first investigation of the sperm ultrastructure of species in the subfamily Tibicininae and the tribe Sinosenini, represented by S. yangi and K. caelatata, respectively. The three species all produce two or three types of spermatozoa with various lengths, viz., polymegaly. The centriolar adjunct of spermatozoa in S. yangi shows a granular substructure, which is different from that of other cicada species, suggesting that spermatozoa in Tibicininae may have their own characteristics in comparison with other cicadas. The centriolar adjunct of spermatozoa of K. caelatata displays characteristics similar to that of the Cicadinae. Combined with other morphological characters, it is reasonable to remove K. caelatata and its allies (i.e., Sinosenini) from Cicadettinae to Cicadinae. The study of sperm ultrastructure, particularly in the species of Tibicininae and Sinosenini, expands the spermatological research of Cicadidae and provides more information for phylogenetic analysis of Cicadidae. The genus Paharia Distant, 1905 is reviewed based on the description of a new species, Paharia oorschoti sp. nov., and redescription of the allied Paharia putoni (Distant, 1892), both from Turkey. The relationships among Paharia, Subpsaltria Chen, 1943 and Tibicina Kolenati, 1857 of the tribe Tibicinini Distant, 1905 are discussed. The morphology of the exuviae of Pa. oorschoti sp. nov. and S. yangi Chen, 1943 is described and compared. Tibicina insidiosa Boulard, 1977 is transferred to Paharia to become Paharia insidiosa comb. nov. A key to all species of Paharia is provided.

The ground plan and comparative morphology of the nymphal head of Membracoidea are presented with particular emphasis on the position of the clypeus, frons, epistomal suture, and ecdysial line. Differences in interpretation of the head structures in Auchenorrhyncha are discussed. Membracoidea head may vary more extensively than heads in any other group of insects. It is often modified by the development of an anterior carina, which apparently was gained and lost multiple times within Membracoidea. The main modifications of the head of Membracoidea and comparison of those changes with the head of other superfamilies of Auchenorrhyncha are described.

Estudos de taxonomia e morfologia de insetos são primordiais para pesquisas etológicas e para o emprego de métodos de controle. Ao estudar coleções entomológicas de cigarras, foi constatado o primeiro registro de ocorrência de Fidicinoides picea e Fidicinoides poulaini (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) no Brasil, espécies coletadas nos Estados do Pará e de Manaus, respectivamente. Neste trabalho, são apresentadas as descrições morfológicas da cabeça, do tórax, do abdome e da asa.The cicadas are important pests of several cultivations, since cultivated until ornamental plants. Este trabalho objetivou determinar a dosagem mais eficiente e economicamente viável de inseticida químico para o controle de ninfas de Quesada gigas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) em plantios de paricá. Foram testadas três dosagens de três produtos (carbofurano, imidacloprida e tiametoxam) baseadas na dosagem máxima recomendada para o controle de cigarras em cafeeiros e aplicadas em área total. A dosagem de um quilograma de produto comercial à base de tiametoxam por hectare foi a mais eficiente econômica e ambientalmente para controle de ninfas de Q. gigas em plantios de paricá.

A comprehensive review of cytogenetic features is provided for the large hemipteran suborder Auchenorrhyncha, which currently contains approximately 42,000 valid species. This review is based on the analysis of 819 species, 483 genera, and 31 families representing all presently recognized Auchenorrhyncha superfamilies, e.i. Cicadoidea (cicadas), Cercopoidea (spittle bugs), Membracoidea (leafhoppers and treehoppers), Myerslopioidea (ground-dwelling leafhoppers), and Fulgoroidea (planthoppers). History and present status of chromosome studies are described, as well as the structure of chromosomes, chromosome counts, trends and mechanisms of evolution of karyotypes and sex determining systems, their variation at different taxonomic levels and most characteristic (modal) states, occurrence of parthenogenesis, polyploidy, B-chromosomes and chromosome rearrangements, and methods used for cytogenetic analysis of Auchenorrhyncha. The alimentary canal of cicada Platypleura kaempferi is described. It comprises the oesophagus, filter chamber, external midgut section and hindgut. The elongate oesophagus expands posteriorly, with its posterior end constricting to become a bulb. The filter chamber consists of two parts: a very thin sheath and a filter organ. The filter organ is composed of the anterior and posterior ends of the midgut (internal midgut section), and the internal proximal ends of the Malpighian tubules. The external midgut section differentiates into a collapsed sac and a midgut loop. The latter is divided into three distinct segments. The hindgut contains a dilated rectum and a long narrow ileum. The distal portions of the four Malpighian tubules are enclosed in a peritoneal sheath together with the distal ileum before reaching to the rectum. Ultrastructurally, the oesophagus and the hindgut are lined with a cuticle. The filter chamber sheath consists of cells with large irregular nuclei. Filamentous substances coat the microvilli of the cells of the internal midgut section. The posterior end of the midgut comprises two types of cells, with the first type of cells containing many vesicles and scattered elements of rough endoplasmic reticulum. The anterior and posterior segments of the midgut loop cells have ferritin-like granules. The ileum cells have well-developed apical leaflets associated with mitochondria. Accumulations of virus-like particles enclosed in the membrane are observed in the esophagus, conical segment, mid- and posterior segments of the midgut loop. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new genus and species of primitive cicada (Hemiptera: Tettigarctidae) is described from the early Miocene of southern New Zealand. Paratettigarcta zealandica gen. et sp. n. is the first cicada (Cicadoidea) fossil from New Zealand and exhibits wing venation patterns typical for the subfamily Tettigarctinae. It differs from other fossil taxa and the extant genus Tettigarcta in the early divergence of CuA2 from the nodal line in the forewing, its parallel-sided subcostal cell, the early bifurcation of vein M and long apical cells of the hindwing, and in wing pigmentation patterns. This study presents the morphological description of a new species, Cicadatra pazukii sp. nov., collected from Iran, also providing the diagnosis of the new species with closely related species. An identification key for the Cicadatra species of Iran is submitted. Adding the new species to the list of recorded species of the family Cicadidae in Iran, the number of cicadas in the country becomes 44, including 18 species of the genus Cicadatra. The infraorder Cicadomorpha is a monophyletic group of the order Hemiptera, suborder Auchenorrhyncha, and is composed of three superfamilies: Cercopoidea (spittle bugs), Cicadoidea (cicadas) and Membracoidea (leafhoppers and treehoppers). Phylogenetic relationships among the superfamilies have been highly controversial morphologically and molecularly, but recent molecular phylogenetic analyses provided support for Cercopoidea + Cicadoidea. In this study, we examined morphology of the wing base structure in Cicadomorpha and tested the previous phylogenetic hypotheses using the characters selected from the wing base. As a result, a sister-group relationship between Cicadoidea and Cercopoidea was supported by three synapomorphies (presence of a projection posterior to the anterior notal wing process, presence of a novel notal process anterior to the posterior notal wing process, presence of a novel sclerite between the distal median plate and the base of anal vein). Cicada barbara (Stål) and Cicada orni L. are two Mediterranean cicadas, very similar in morphology, that produce distinct acoustic mating signals and that have partially overlapping distribution ranges in the Iberian Peninsula, occurring in sympatry in several locations. In the present study, six microsatellite loci were analysed in C. barbara, four of which were also analysed in C. orni. Geographical and temporal genetic variation in these species was studied. No evidence of hybridization was found, enabling us to infer that the isolating barriers between these species are efficient. Partitioning of geographic variation in each species, revealed the following patterns: Iberian Peninsula and Northwestern African populations of C. barbara showed higher differentiation between than within each region, supporting C. barbara subspecific taxonomy ( C. barbara lusitanica in the Iberian Peninsula and C. barbara barbara in Northwestern Africa) and highlighting isolation coincident with the presence of physical barriers to gene-flow; differentiation between populations of C. orni from both sides of the Pyrenees was very low, and this mountain range may not constitute a significant barrier for the dispersal of this species; Greek populations of C. orni were found to be highly differentiated from Western European populations; and no pattern of isolation-by-distance was found in either species within the Iberian Peninsula. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 96, 249–265. A new genus and species of Tettigarctidae, Burmaprosbole nervosa gen. et sp. nov., with well-preserved wings is described from the mid-Cretaceous Myanmar amber. It can be distinguished from the other genera by its tegmen M with six branches, M 3+4+5+6 strongly arched after nodal line, basal of M and CuA connecting by a relatively long cross vein, basal cell pentagonal, medial cell short and wide. Based on the fossil records of Tettigarctidae, we consider it is inappropriate to use the number of R branches as a diagnostic character in tettigarctids' higher categories (superfamilies or tribes).
