Abstract

III-V nanowire heterostructures can act as sources of single and entangled photons and are enabling technologies for on-chip applications in future quantum photonic devices. The unique geometry of nanowires allows to integrate lattice-mismatched components beyond the limits of planar epilayers and to create radially and axially confined quantum structures. Here, we report the plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy growth of thin GaAs/GaAsN/GaAs core-multishell nanowires monolithically integrated on Si (111) substrates, overcoming the challenges caused by the low solubility of N and a high lattice mismatch. The nanowires have a GaAsN shell of 10 nm containing 2.7% N, which reduces the GaAs bandgap drastically by 400 meV. They have a symmetric core-shell structure with sharp boundaries and a defect-free zincblende phase. The high structural quality reflects in their excellent opto-electroinic properties, including remarkable single photon emission from quantum confined states in the thin GaAsN shell with a second-order autocorrelation function at zero time delay as low as 0.056.

Abstract

Hybrid quantum-classical computing algorithms offer significant potential for accelerating the calculation of the electronic structure of strongly correlated molecules. In this work, we present the first quantum simulation of conical intersections (CIs) in a biomolecule, cytosine, using a superconducting quantum computer. We apply the Contracted Quantum Eigensolver (CQE) -- with comparisons to conventional Variational Quantum Deflation (VQD) -- to compute the near-degenerate ground and excited states associated with the conical intersection, a key feature governing the photostability of DNA and RNA. The CQE is based on an exact ansatz for many-electron molecules in the absence of noise -- a critically important property for resolving strongly correlated states at CIs. Both methods demonstrate promising accuracy when compared with exact diagonalization, even on noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers, highlighting their potential for advancing the understanding of photochemical and photobiological processes. The ability to simulate these intersections is critical for advancing our knowledge of biological processes like DNA repair and mutation, with potential implications for molecular biology and medical research.

Abstract

Two-dimensional crystals stack together through weak van der Waals (vdW) forces, offering unlimited possibilities to play with layer number, order and twist angle in vdW heterostructures (HSs). The realisation of high-performance optoelectronic devices, however, requires the achievement of specific band alignments, $k$-space matching between conduction band minima and valence band maxima, as well as efficient charge transfer between the constituent layers. Fine tuning mechanisms to design ideal HSs are lacking. Here, we show that layer-selective strain engineering can be exploited as an extra degree of freedom in vdW HSs to tailor their band alignment and optical properties. To that end, strain is selectively applied to MS$_2$ (M=Mo,W) monolayers in InSe/MS$_2$ HSs. This triggers a giant PL enhancement of the highly tuneable but weakly emitting InSe by one to three orders of magnitude. Resonant PL excitation measurements, supported by first-principle calculations, provide evidence of a strain-activated direct charge transfer from the MS$_2$ MLs toward InSe. This significant emission enhancement achieved for InSe widens its range of applications for optoelectronics.

Abstract

Quantum computing holds the promise of solving classically intractable problems. Enabling this requires scalable and hardware-efficient quantum processors with vanishing error rates. This perspective manuscript describes how bosonic codes, particularly grid state encodings, offer a pathway to scalable fault-tolerant quantum computing in superconducting circuits. By leveraging the large Hilbert space of bosonic modes, quantum error correction can operate at the single physical unit level, therefore reducing drastically the hardware requirements to bring fault-tolerant quantum computing to scale. Going beyond the well-known Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) code, we discuss how using multiple bosonic modes to encode a single qubit offers increased protection against control errors and enhances its overall error-correcting capabilities. 5. Subspace-Search Quantum Imaginary Time Evolution for Excited State Computations

Abstract

Quantum systems in excited states are attracting significant interest with the advent of noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices. While ground states of small molecular systems are typically explored using hybrid variational algorithms like the variational quantum eigensolver (VQE), the study of excited states has received much less attention, partly due to the absence of efficient algorithms. In this work, we introduce the subspace search quantum imaginary time evolution (SSQITE) method, which calculates excited states using quantum devices by integrating key elements of the subspace search variational quantum eigensolver (SSVQE) and the variational quantum imaginary time evolution (VarQITE) method. The effectiveness of SSQITE is demonstrated through calculations of low-lying excited states of benchmark model systems, including $\text{H}_2$ and $\text{LiH}$ molecules. A toy Hamiltonian is also employed to demonstrate that the robustness of VarQITE in avoiding local minima extends to its use in excited state algorithms. With this robustness in avoiding local minima, SSQITE shows promise for advancing quantum computations of excited states across a wide range of applications., Comment: 21 pages, 6 Figures

Abstract

In this work, the term ``quantum chaos'' refers to spectral correlations similar to those found in the random matrix theory. Quantum chaos can be diagnosed through the analysis of level statistics using e.g.~the spectral form factor, which detects both short- and long-range level correlations. The spectral form factor corresponds to the Fourier transform of the two-point spectral correlation function and exhibits a typical slope-dip-ramp-plateau structure (aka correlation hole) when the system is chaotic. We discuss how this structure could be detected through the quench dynamics of two physical quantities accessible to experimental many-body quantum systems: the survival probability and the spin autocorrelation function. The survival probability is equivalent to the spectral form factor with an additional filter. When the system is small, the dip of the correlation hole reaches sufficiently large values at times which are short enough to be detected with current experimental platforms. As the system is pushed away from chaos, the correlation hole disappears, signaling integrability or localization. We also provide a relatively shallow circuit with which the correlation hole could be detected with commercially available quantum computers., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Moir\'{e} excitons (MXs) are electron-hole pairs localised by the periodic (moir\'{e}) potential forming in two-dimensional heterostructures (HSs). MXs can be exploited, $e.g.$, for creating nanoscale-ordered quantum emitters and achieving or probing strongly correlated electronic phases at relatively high temperatures. Here, we studied the exciton properties of a WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$ HS from $T$=6 K to room temperature using time-resolved and continuous-wave micro-photoluminescence, also under magnetic field. The exciton dynamics and emission lineshape evolution with temperature show clear signatures that MXs de-trap from the moir\'{e} potential and turn into free interlayer excitons (IXs) at $T\gtrsim$120 K. The MX-to-IX transition is also apparent from the exciton magnetic moment reversing its sign when the moir\'{e} potential is not capable to localise excitons at elevated temperatures. Concomitantly, the exciton formation and decay times reduce drastically. Thus, our findings establish the conditions for a truly confined nature of the exciton states in a moir\'{e} superlattice with increasing temperature.

We consider the Lie derivative along Killing vector fields of the Dirac relativistic spinors: by using the polar decomposition we acquire the mean to study the implementation of symmetries on Dirac fields. Specifically, we will become able to examine under what conditions it is equivalent to impose a symmetry upon a spinor or only upon its observables. 12. The Quantum-Extended Church-Turing Thesis in Quantum Field Theory

Abstract

The quantum-Extended Church-Turing thesis has been explored in many physical theories including general relativity but lacks exploration in quantum field theories such as quantum electrodynamics. Through construction of a computational model whose gate set mimics the interactions of QED, we demonstrate that one of the defining features of quantum field theory, particle creation and annihilation, is not likely to violate the quantum-Extended Church-Turing thesis. Through this computational model, it is shown that particle creation is likely only another form of quantum parallelism. However, whether or not the quantum-Extended Church-Turing thesis will hold for all computational devices in quantum field theories is still not known. For example, we briefly examine certain interactions in quantum electrodynamics which may create multi-qubit gates. These gates may have exponential complexity at the cost of being exponentially weak. This may in turn allow for computational advantage over traditional gate sets such as Clifford+T.

The rewards a blockchain miner earns vary with time. Most of the time is spent mining without receiving any rewards, and only occasionally the miner wins a block and earns a reward. Mining pools smoothen the stochastic flow of rewards, and in the ideal case, provide a steady flow of rewards over time. Smooth block rewards allow miners to choose an optimal mining power growth strategy that will result in a higher reward yield for a given investment. Abstract

Abstract Objective Epileptic seizures occurring in late adulthood often remain of unknown origin. Sporadic cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a cerebral small vessel disease characterized by intracerebral hemorrhage, microhemorrhage and superficial siderosis, occurring mostly in elderly. This observational case–control study aimed to assess the occurrence of CAA in patients experiencing their first seizure in late adulthood. Methods We enrolled consecutive patients aged ≥55 years presenting with late‐onset seizures (LOS) to the emergency departments or outpatient clinics of two Italian centers, from April 2021 to October 2022. Two age‐matched control subjects with neurological symptoms other than epileptic seizure were recruited for each enrolled case. All participants underwent brain MRI (1.5 Tesla) including blood‐sensitive sequences and were assessed for probable CAA diagnosis according to Boston criteria 2.0. Chi‐squared test was performed to evaluate group differences. Univariate logistic regression analysis tested the association between clinical variables and CAA. Results We included 65 patients with LOS (27 females; mean age 72.2 ± 8.9 years) and 130 controls (49 females; mean age 70.3 ± 8.9 years). Diagnosis of probable CAA was achieved in 10.8% (7/65) of LOS patients and 2.3% (3/130) controls, with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.011). The OR for CAA in the LOS group was 5.2 as compared to the control group (95% CI = 1.3–20.6, p = 0.02). Significance The frequency of CAA is significatively higher in patients with LOS as compared to other neurological diseases, suggesting that a portion of LOS of unknown or vascular origin are associated with CAA. Plain Language Summary Late‐onset seizures (LOS) are very frequent in the elderly and often have no clear cause. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a condition where amyloid proteins build up in the blood vessels of the brain, causing them to become weak and prone to bleeding. In this study, we explored the occurrence of CAA in people with LOS. We found that people with LOS were more likely to have a diagnosis of CAA than controls (i.e., people with other neurological diseases).

Abstract

Abstract Passive non-destructive evaluation tools such as acoustic emission (AE) testing and acousto-ultrasonics (AU) approach present a complex problem in damage localisation in complex and nonhomogeneous geometries. A novel AU-guided AE frequency interpretation approach is proposed in this research work which aims at overcoming this limitation. For the experimental evaluation, the damage sources from a geometrically complex clear dental aligners are tested under cyclic compression load and their origins are evaluated. Despite the rapid worldwide diffusion of the clear aligners, their mechanical behaviour is poorly investigated. In this work, the frequency characteristics of the artificially simulated stress wave, generated from different dental positions of the clear aligners, are studied using the AU approach. These frequency characteristics are then used to analyse the AE signals generated by these aligners when subjected to cyclic compressive loading. In addition, the time domain characteristics of the AE signals are studied using their Time of Arrival (ToA). The Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) is used to estimate the ToA. These frequency and time domain characteristics of the AE signals are used to estimate the local damage origin in the clear dental aligners. This will help in identifying localised damage sources during the usage period of the aligners. Experimental results revealed significant damages in the left maxillary premolar and right maxillary third molar of the aligners.

16. The Experiences of University Faculty with Integrating Multiple Intelligences into Their Teaching Strategies

Abstract

The researcher investigated how university faculty in graduate education programs incorporated multiple intelligences (MI) theory into their teaching strategies and acknowledged the interconnectedness of andragogy and MI theory. The researcher addressed the significant shift in teaching paradigms from traditional methods to approaches that foster critical thinking and problem-solving. This research was prompted by the need to understand the answer to this central question: What are the experiences of university faculty with integrating multiple intelligences into their teaching strategies? The rationale for this study was grounded in the need to understand the use of MI theory at the university level, which has been predominantly studied in K-12 settings. Employing a basic qualitative research design, the researcher interviewed eight faculty members from a small liberal arts university. The participant pool included full-time and adjunct professors, all in the graduate education department, with diverse backgrounds and experiences in teaching graduate-level courses. The analysis of the data, conducted through thematic analysis, uncovered five significant themes: beliefs about intelligence, awareness, and understanding of MI theory, integration of MI in instruction, impact on student learning and engagement, and personal philosophy and pedagogy. The researcher determined that incorporating MI theory into graduate education improves student engagement and learning outcomes. Faculty members acknowledged intelligence's complexity and identified their strengths in linguistic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal intelligences. They employed various MI strategies, such as student choice, self-reflection, storytelling, and visual aids, which met the diverse intelligences of their learners and enriched educational experiences. The researcher highlighted the importance of recognizing the differing needs of adult learners, utilizing nontraditional teaching strategies, and creating supportive and inclusive learning environments. Future research should expand to various higher education contexts and explore the integration of MI with other educational frameworks, such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), to develop a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning. These findings have practical implications for improving teaching practices and enhancing student outcomes in graduate education. Abstract

In this paper, we outline a framework for modeling utility-based blockchain-enabled economic systems using Agent Based Modeling (ABM). Our approach is to model the supply dynamics based on metrics of the cryptoeconomy. We then build autonomous agents that make decisions based on those metrics. Those decisions, in turn, impact the metrics in the next time-step, creating a closed loop that models the evolution of cryptoeconomies over time. We apply this framework as a case-study to Filecoin, a decentralized blockchain-based storage network. 18. Security of One-Way Entanglement Purification with Quantum Sampling Against a Restricted Adversary

Abstract

Entanglement purification protocols promise to play a critical role in the future of quantum networks by distributing entanglement across noisy channels. However, only the security of two-way purification protocols have been closely studied. To address this, we propose a one-way entanglement purification protocol which utilizes quantum sampling and prove its security against an adversary restricted to single qubit Pauli gates. This is done through leveraging the equivalence of one-way entanglement purification protocols with error-correcting codes. To prove the security of this protocol, we first use the quantum sampling framework introduced by Bouman and Fehr to estimate the Hamming weight of the qubits which passed through the channel and then use the estimated relative Hamming weight $\omega$ to determine the amount of interference that Eve has subjected to the quantum channel. Since Eve is restricted to single qubit Pauli gates, the number of applied gates can be directly estimated using the Hamming weight. Estimating the number of adversarial single qubit gates, allows us to perform error correction and disentangle the logical qubit from Eve with probability $1-\epsilon_{qu}^\delta$. Since this protocol allows communication only in one direction, the distance of the code must be decided before transmission, and therefore Bob will be forced to abort the protocol if he finds that Eve has applied more gates than the code can correct. One-way protocols may find use when communication is limited, or when we desire to decrease latency compared to the multiple rounds of communication needed in two-way protocols. Further research may investigate the security of this protocol against arbitrary single or multi-qubit gates to obtain security guarantees against a more general adversary.

Abstract

IntroductionNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent form of chronic liver disease in the world, and it is characterized by an excessive hepatic fat accumulation in more than 5% of hepatocytes documented by histology in the absence of alcohol consumption. It is a multifactorial pathology, where genetic component plays a fundamental role: the loss-of-function polymorphisms of genes coding for glutathione S-transferases would predispose to the pathology onset, also in the absence of other risk factors. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relation between the “NULL” GST-T1 and GST-M1 polymorphisms and the onset of NAFLD.MethodsA group of 117 “apparently healthy” Caucasian volunteers, selected from a larger population through the analysis of previously administered short questionnaires, underwent both magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) and buccal swabs: the aim was to identify the possible presence of hepatic steatosis and of the aforementioned “NULL” polymorphisms of interest.ResultsA statistically significant association between the GST-T1 and GST-M1 “NULL” genotypes and the probability of developing NAFLD has been identified. In particular, the GST-T1 “NULL” genotype has been associated with a greater probability of developing steatosis in early age, while the GST-M1 “NULL” genotype seems to increase the risk of developing a higher grade of steatosis. No statistically significant correlations between the “NULL” genotype and sex have been detected.DiscussionAmong the numerous risk factors capable of predisposing to NAFLD onset and progression, the genetic factors seem to play an important role. In particular, GST-T1 and GST-M1 “NULL” polymorphisms would appear to acquire even greater importance, as their loss of function results in an increase of oxidative stress. At high concentrations, ROS can determine oxidative modifications of cellular macromolecules, such as lipids, determining their accumulation into hepatocytes. 31. Toward Constructing a Continuous Logical Operator for Error-Corrected Quantum Sensing

Abstract

Error correction has long been suggested to extend the sensitivity of quantum sensors into the Heisenberg Limit. However, operations on logical qubits are only performed through universal gate sets consisting of finite-sized gates such as Clifford+T. Although these logical gate sets allow for universal quantum computation, the finite gate sizes present a problem for quantum sensing, since in sensing protocols, such as the Ramsey measurement protocol, the signal must act continuously. The difficulty in constructing a continuous logical operator comes from the Eastin-Knill theorem, which prevents a continuous signal from being both fault tolerant to local errors and transverse. Since error correction is needed to approach the Heisenberg Limit in a noisy environment, it is important to explore how to construct fault-tolerant continuous operators. In this paper, a protocol to design continuous logical z-rotations is proposed and applied to the Steane Code. The fault tolerance of the designed operator is investigated using the Knill-Laflamme conditions. The Knill-Laflamme conditions indicate that the diagonal unitary operator constructed cannot be fault tolerant solely due to the possibilities of X errors on the middle qubit. The approach demonstrated throughout this paper may, however, find success in codes with more qubits such as the Shor code, distance 3 surface code, [15,1,3] code, or codes with a larger distance such as the [11,1,5] code.

We consider the Dirac equations in static spherically-symmetric space-times, and we present a type of spinor field whose structure allows the separation of elevation angle and radial coordinate in very general situations. We demonstrate that after such a separation of variables the Dirac equations reduce to two equations that can always be integrated, at least in principle. Abstract

BackgroundMigraine is a highly underestimated and burdensome disease. Real-world studies evidence that migraine is more frequent and severe in women than men. However, to this day, no diagnostic-therapeutic pathways exist to satisfy the specific needs of female patients.MethodsIn this study, migraine experts, specialists in women’s health, patient, and decision makers, analyzed the diagnostic and therapeutic options for women with migraine across various ages and health conditions within the Italian healthcare system. A Delphi approach was used to formulate statements and achieve a consensus.ResultsGaps in clinical practice were identified, and strategies to accommodate women’s needs were proposed. The experts agreed that a socio-behavioral intervention should be planned before any pharmacological treatment in pediatric/adolescent female patients and that the assessment of migraine with aura is considered crucial for adult women requiring contraceptive therapy. Acupuncture emerged as an effective treatment for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and hormone-replacement therapy selection in menopausal patients requires careful consideration to mitigate safety risks. The experts highlighted the absence of literature and guidelines for the management of migraine in women undergoing assisted reproductive procedures or oncological treatment. In light of these observations, the experts advocated the establishment of multidisciplinary collaborations between neurologists/headache specialists and other healthcare professionals, including general practitioners, pediatricians, gynecologists, and oncologists. Comprehensive migraine education for all healthcare professionals potentially involved in managing the disease, including pharmacists, was emphasized. Efforts to increase migraine awareness among women should be prioritized.ConclusionThe insights gained from this Italian consensus study should serve to develop an improved, female-specific pathway to diagnose and treat migraine.

Abstract

Due to its nonspecific symptoms, in several cases, Acute Aortic Dissection (AAD) is a difficult-to-diagnose urgent condition. The torn intimal layer initiates a false lumen, which can potentially propagate and cause life-threatening ruptures or organ ischemia. Intramural hematoma can rarely develop inside the false lumen, resulting in compression of surrounding structures and worsening the patient’s prognosis. We report a case of AAD - Stanford Type A complicated by an intramural hematoma compressing the pulmonary artery, accompanied by a discussion of relevant literature. This patient presented to the emergency department with acute respiratory distress; clinical and initial diagnostic findings mimicked pulmonary embolism. However, a systematic differential evaluation supported by point-of-care ultrasound allowed a prompt diagnosis of AAD and avoided fixation errors.

Abstract

IntroductionSurgical-related injuries are frequent, in fact the reported percentage of musculoskeletal disorders in surgeons is between 47% and 87%. These conditions are caused by long periods of standing, incorrect postures, repeated movements, little rest between operations, the lack of integrated operator rooms, the correct number and arrangement of monitors and the use of non-ergonomic instruments. This survey aims to assess the Italian overview both highlighting how prevalent surgical-related injury is in our surgeons and whether there is an operating room ergonomics education program in Italian surgical specialty schools.MethodsAn anonymous questionnaire was designed through SurveyMonkey© web application. This survey was composed of 3 different sections concerning the general characteristics of the participants, their surgical background and any training performed, and any injuries or ailments related to the surgical activity. The survey was carried out in the period 1th of December 2022 and the 6th of February 2023.ResultsAt the close of our survey, 300 responses were collected. Among the participants, the two most represented specialties were Gynecology and Obstetrics (42.3%) and General Surgery (39.7%) and surgeons were mainly employed in the Northern regions of Italy (54.8%). Analyzing the participants’ background, 61.7% of the respondents had laparoscopic training during their training and only 53.1% had a pelvic trainer during their residency. In accordance with 98.7% of the respondents, during surgery we have the feeling of being in an uncomfortable position that causes discomfort or muscle pain, and regarding the frequency of these discomforts, the majority of our study population experiences these problems monthly (46.2%), while in 29.6% it is experienced weekly, 12.1% annually and finally 12.1% daily. The surgical approach that is most correlated with these disorders is laparoscopy (62.7%) while the one that causes the least discomfort is robotic surgery (1.4%). These discomforts cause 43.9% of our population to take a break or do short exercises to reduce pain during surgery, and the body areas most affected are the back (61.6%), neck (40.6%) and shoulders (37.8%).ConclusionDespite this, our survey allows us to highlight some now-known gaps present in the surgical training program of our schools and the lack of protection toward our surgeons during their long career.

Abstract

The possibility of almost linear tuning of the band gap and of the electrical and optical properties in monolayers (MLs) of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (S-TMD) alloys opens up the way to fabricate materials with on-demand characteristics. By making use of photoluminescence spectroscopy, we investigate optical properties of WSSe MLs with a S/Se ratio of 57/43 deposited on SiO$_2$/Si substrate and encapsulated in hexagonal BN flakes. Similarly to the $"parent"$ WS$_2$ and WSe$_2$ MLs, we assign the WSSe MLs to the ML family with the dark ground exciton state. We find that, in addition to the neutral bright A exciton line, three observed emission lines are associated with negatively charged excitons. The application of in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields allows us to assign undeniably the bright and dark (spin- and momentum-forbidden) negative trions as well as the phonon replica of the dark spin-forbidden complex. Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

The uterine tourniquet is often not used to reduce intraoperative blood loss due to controversial opinions in the literature. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of this procedure in laparotomic myomectomy. This is a retrospective, monocentric case-control study, including patients who underwent laparotomic myomectomy and were categorized into the Tourniquet Group (A) and No Tourniquet Group (B). The blood loss outcomes were compared. Intra-operative blood loss in Group A was 275 ± 200 mL, while in Group B was 410 ± 390 mL (p = 0.11). Notably, five patients in the No Tourniquet Group lost more than 1000 mL of blood and required blood transfusion, while no such cases were reported in the Tourniquet Group. Furthermore, the decrease in hemoglobin post-procedure was statistically significant, favoring Group A with a decrease of 1.9 ± 0.7 g/dL compared to Group B’s 2.8 ± 2.2 g/dL (p = 0.04). The use of the Foley catheter as a tourniquet during laparotomic myomectomy may represent a remarkable tool that profoundly impacts the surgical process by substantially reducing blood loss. Its use may play a role in significantly diminishing the likelihood of requiring blood transfusions, enhancing patient safety and outcomes, and should be systematically adopted.

Abstract

Let a torus $T$ act freely on a closed manifold $M$ of dimension at least two. We demonstrate that, for a generic $T$-invariant Riemannian metric $g$ on $M$, each real $\Delta_g$-eigenspace is an irreducible real representation of $T$ and, therefore, has dimension at most two. We also show that, for the generic $T$-invariant metric on $M$, if $u$ is a non-invariant real-valued $\Delta_g$-eigenfunction that vanishes on some $T$-orbit, then the nodal set of $u$ is a connected smooth hypersurface whose complement has exactly two connected components., Comment: 18 pages

Abstract

We introduce a methodology for generating random multi-qubit stabilizer codes based on solving a constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) on random bipartite graphs. This framework allows us to enforce stabilizer commutation, $X/Z$ balancing, finite rate, sparsity, and maximum-degree constraints simultaneously in a CSP that we can then solve numerically. Using a state-of-the-art CSP solver, we obtain convincing evidence for the existence of a satisfiability threshold. Furthermore, the extent of the satisfiable phase increases with the number of qubits. In that phase, finding sparse codes becomes an easy problem. Moreover, we observe that the sparse codes found in the satisfiable phase practically achieve the channel capacity for erasure noise. Our results show that intermediate-size finite-rate sparse quantum codes are easy to find, while also demonstrating a flexible methodology for generating good codes with custom properties. We therefore establish a complete and customizable pipeline for random quantum code discovery.

ABSTRACTCancer is a global health challenge, with changing demographics and lifestyle factors producing an increasing burden worldwide. Screening advancements are enabling earlier diagnoses, but current cancer immunotherapies only induce remission in a small proportion of patients and come at a high cost. Cancer vaccines may offer a solution to these challenges, but they have been mired by poor results in past decades. Greater understanding of tumor biology, coupled with the success of vaccine technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic, has reinvigorated cancer vaccine development. With the first signs of efficacy being reported, cancer vaccines may be beginning to fulfill their potential. Solid tumors, however, present different hurdles than infectious diseases. Combining insights from previous cancer vaccine clinical development and contemporary knowledge of tumor immunology, we ask: who are the ‘right’ patients, what are the ‘right’ targets, and which are the ‘right’ modalities to maximize the chances of cancer vaccine success?

Abstract

BackgroundFine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is an invasive diagnostic technique which is widely used for the cytological diagnosis of thyroid nodules. This procedure is generally widely tolerated by patients, albeit often accompanied by local pain and discomfort. Despite various proposals of execution methods, no approach is universally accepted,especially regarding the size of the needle to be used for sampling. Needle gauge preferences vary across regions, with 25-gauge needles more common in Western countries and 22-gauge needles favored in Asian countries. Complications associated with larger needles have been studied but remain inconclusive.Materials and methodsOver one year, we conducted 300 FNAC procedures under ultrasound guidance, employing both 22-gauge and 25-gauge needles. In no patient was local anesthesia performed before starting the procedure, which in all was performed by the same operator. Similarly the cytological examination of the material taken was performed by a single operator. Patients, 105 males and 195 females, were divided into two groups of 150 each based on the needle size used.ResultsPatients treated with 22-gauge needles reported higher levels of pain during the procedure and increased discomfort afterward. Similarly, a greater incidence of hematomas and vasovagal reactions was noted in this group. However, the cell sample obtained and diagnostic response rates were consistent across both groups.ConclusionOn the basis of our observations we concluded that the size of the needle used is irrelevant for the purposes of the diagnostic result, as long as the procedure is performed by expert personnel. However, the 25-gauge needle is preferable because it's more tolerated and accepted by patients. Our results do not represent a single and conclusive verdict, but they could represent the starting point for further research.

Abstract

IntroductionPelvic organs prolapse remains a significant health concern affecting millions of women worldwide. The use of native tissues to suspend the apex has acquired relevance in urogynecologic surgery. One of the most commonly used procedures performed without mesh is the technique described by Shull, consisting of suturing the vaginal apex to the uterosacral ligaments. The objective of the study is to evaluate the learning curve of laparoscopic Shull's repair for the correction of pelvic floor defects, including the surgery time and surgical outcomes.Materials and methodsThis is a retrospective study conducted at the Policlinico G. Martino, University of Messina, Messina, Italy, and Policlinico Vanvitelli, Vanvitelli University, Naples, Italy. All patients affected by grade I-IV POP, consisting of apical prolapse with or without cystocele, and who underwent laparoscopic Shull's technique for prolapse correction were enrolled. The endpoints to estimate the learning curve for the procedure were the percentage of laparoscopic procedures completed, operative time, and the early complication rate.ResultsA total of 31 laparoscopic Shull repairs were collected for the study. To evaluate the learning curve of the technique, we divided the 31 cases into three different groups: Procedures 0–10; 11–20; 21–31. The parameter for evaluating technique learning was the operative time. Group 21–31 demonstrated an operative time of 97 min (SD 20), compared with 121 min (SD 23) in group 0–10 and 120 min (SD 13) in group 11–20. A comparison of these means through ANOVA showed a p-value of 0.01 for the entire system, and 0.95 for the comparison between 0 and 10 and 11–20, 0.04 for 0–10 vs. 21–31, and 0.02 between 11 and 20 and 21–31.ConclusionsThe rate of surgical improvement in terms of time became effective after an average of 20 procedures. However, the improvement seems to be effective case by case for surgeons skilled in basic endoscopy.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of $\pi^0$ production in neutral current (NC) interactions on argon with average neutrino energy of $\lesssim1$~GeV. We use data from the MicroBooNE detector's 85-tonne active volume liquid argon time projection chamber situated in Fermilab's Booster Neutrino Beam and exposed to $5.89\times10^{20}$ protons on target for this measurement. Measurements of NC $\pi^0$ events are reported for two exclusive event topologies without charged pions. Those include a topology with two photons from the decay of the $\pi^0$ and one proton and a topology with two photons and zero protons. Flux-averaged cross-sections for each exclusive topology and for their semi-inclusive combination are extracted (efficiency-correcting for two-plus proton final states), and the results are compared to predictions from the \textsc{genie}, \textsc{neut}, and \textsc{NuWro} neutrino event generators. We measure cross sections of $1.243\pm0.185$ (syst) $\pm0.076$ (stat), $0.444\pm0.098\pm0.047$, and $0.624\pm0.131\pm0.075$ $[10^{-38}\textrm{cm}^2/\textrm{Ar}]$ for the semi-inclusive NC$\pi^0$, exclusive NC$\pi^0$+1p, and exclusive NC$\pi^0$+0p processes, respectively., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

The MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) maintains a high level of liquid argon purity through the use of a filtration system that removes electronegative contaminants in continuously-circulated liquid, recondensed boil off, and externally supplied argon gas. We use the MicroBooNE LArTPC to reconstruct MeV-scale radiological decays. Using this technique we measure the liquid argon filtration system's efficacy at removing radon. This is studied by placing a 500 kBq $^{222}$Rn source upstream of the filters and searching for a time-dependent increase in the number of radiological decays in the LArTPC. In the context of two models for radon mitigation via a liquid argon filtration system, a slowing mechanism and a trapping mechanism, MicroBooNE data supports a radon reduction factor of greater than 99.999% or 97%, respectively. Furthermore, a radiological survey of the filters found that the copper-based filter material was the primary medium that removed the $^{222}$Rn. This is the first observation of radon mitigation in liquid argon with a large-scale copper-based filter and could offer a radon mitigation solution for future large LArTPCs., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted by the Journal of Instrumentation
