Abstract

Soil erosion control is critical to global food production and ecosystem health worldwide, and particularly in the Mediterranean region, which is prone to erosion and is expected to be strongly affected by climatic and anthropogenic changes. In this paper, we explore how land use and management (LUM) can mitigate climate change impacts and increase agricultural attractiveness in pasture‐dominated Mediterranean mountain environments. One originality of the proposed research is to combine LUM scenarios incorporating environmental and socio‐economic behaviour with distributed process‐based modelling to simulate the impacts of global change. Specifically, soil erosion for different combinations of current and plausible future climate and LUM conditions were simulated on a small watershed located in eastern Sicily (Italy) using the LandSoil model. LUM scenarios were established as a modulation of environmental protection and agricultural production/diversification. The main management distinctions tested in this paper included intensive versus extensive practices for pasture, and conventional versus conservative practices for cereals and orchards. Simulations showed that the impact of climate change was very low and not significant in the studied watershed (i.e., −1.78% of erosion on average). Under current climate and compared to the baseline, LUM scenarios reported an increase in erosion for the business‐as‐usual (S1, +6.0%), market‐oriented (S2, +57.2%) and sustainability‐oriented (S4, +0.9) scenarios, respectively, whereas the nature‐oriented scenario led to a slight reduction in erosion (S3, −11.3%). Our results also emphasised that agricultural diversification coupled with adaptations in practices and management can improve the attractiveness of agriculture in pasture‐dominated environments while maintaining soil protection at an acceptable level. Abstract

Scenarios serve science by testing the sensitivity of a system and/or society to adapt to the future. In this study, we present a new land use scenario methodology called ScenaLand. This methodology aims to develop plausible and contrasting land use and management (LUM) scenarios, useful to explore how LUM (e.g. soil and water conservation techniques) may affect ecosystem services under global change in a wide range of environments. ScenaLand is a method for constructing narrative and spatially explicit land use scenarios that are useful for end-users and impact modellers. This method is innovative because it merges literature and expert knowledge, and its low data requirement makes it easy to be implemented in the context of inter-site comparison, including global change projections. ScenaLand was developed and tested on six different Mediterranean agroecological and socioeconomic contexts during the MASCC research project (Mediterranean agricultural soil conservation under global change). The method first highlights the socioeconomic trends of each study site including emerging trends such as new government laws, LUM techniques through a qualitative survey addressed to local experts. Then, the method includes a ranking of driving factors, a matrix about land use evolution, and soil and water conservation techniques. ScenaLand also includes a framework to develop narratives along with two priority axes (contextualized to environmental protection vs. land productivity in this study). In the context of this research project, four contrasting scenarios are proposed: S1 (business-as-usual), S2 (market-oriented), S3 (environmental protection), and S4 (sustainable). Land use maps are then built with the creation of LUM allocation rules based on agroecological zoning. ScenaLand resulted in a robust and easy method to apply with the creation of 24 contrasted scenarios. Abstract

Special issue Mapping and Modelling Soil Erosion to Address Societal Challenges in a Changing World presents advances in interdisciplinary methodologies for the study of the soil erosion/land management/climate change nexus, with a focus on societal challenges linked to land degradation. Contribution of 22 research teams active in 17 countries all over the world provided a global perspective on how soil erosion research contributes to meet societal challenges of our time. The authors conclude that (a) inclusive representation of non-linear system feedback between erosion and land management; (b) combination of mapping, measuring, monitoring, and modelling methods on different temporal and spatial scales; and (c) inclusive, cooperative interdisciplinary research approaches are inevitable to support management aiming for land degradation neutrality.

28. Land-use scenarios and the related streamflows and soil erosion dynamics: Application of the LandSoil model to a Mediterranean mountainous catchment characterized by high density of small terraces

Abstract

Regional and local studies assessing the effects of landscape evolution on hydrology and soil erosion dynamics are fundamental to develop adaptive watershed management. This is especially important in the Mediterranean region given its high natural variability but also the expected negative impacts of global change on water resources. LandSoil model was applied to the Can Vila catchment (0.6 km2, Vallcebre Research catchments, NE Spain) in order to compare runoff and soil erosion between different projected socio-economic scenarios. This work presents the first results of the ongoing study. The model was first subjected to a calibration/validation procedure considering historical data series of runoff and sediment yield from the catchment outlet at the event scale. To this end, we derived an actual land use map (S0) in which terraces and roads were identified and also DEMs at 1- and 2-m resolutions from national airborne LIDAR. In addition, four different socio-economic scenarios were considered based on socio-economic surveys and translated into land use maps for the 2041-2061 period: as usual (S1), high-intensive agriculture (S2), environmental protection (S3) and sustainable (S4). The land use maps were derived based on biological, biophysical and management constraints. For both the actual (1990-2010) and future scenarios (2041-2061), 5min synthetic series of precipitation were obtained for the RCP 4.5 scenario (RCM Aladdin) and properly downscaled. Comparisons of LandSoil results corresponding to actual (S0) and future (S1 to S4) conditions are being performed in order to improve the management of Mediterranean watersheds located in mountainous regions.

Abstract

Wildfire is known to create the pre-conditions leading to accelerated soil erosion. Unfortunately, its occurrence is expected to increase with climate change. The objective of this study was to assess the impacts of fire on runoffand soil erosion in a context of global change, and to evaluate the effectiveness of mulching as a post-fire erosion mitigation measure. For this, the long-term soil erosion model LandSoil was calibrated for a Mediterranean catchment in north-central Portugal that burnt in 2011. LandSoil was then applied for a 20-year period to quantify the separate and combined hydrological and erosion impacts of fire frequency and of post-fire mulching using four plausible site-specific land use and management scenarios (S1. business-as-usual, S2. market-oriented, S3. environmental protection and S4. sustainable trade-off) and an intermediate climate change scenario Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 by 2050. The obtained results showed that: (i) fire had a reduced impact on runoffgeneration in the studied catchment (<5%) but a marked impact on sediment yield (SY) by about 30%; (ii) eucalypt intensification combined with climate change and fires can increase SY by threefold and (iii) post-fire mulching, combined with riparian vegetation maintenance/restoration and reduced tillage at the landscape level, was highly effective to mitigate soil erosion under global change and associated, increased fire frequency (up to 50% reduction). This study shows how field monitoring data can be combined with numerical erosion modeling to segregate the prominent processes occurring in post forest fire conditions and find the best management pathways to meet international goals on achieving land degradation neutrality (LDN).

Abstract

International audience; During the last decades, a large number of fires occurred in Portugal due to its large forest area exacerbated by high fire weather index and due to the plantation of fire prone species such as eucalyptus. A large number of studies show that fires lead to accelerated soil erosion and land degradation. Additionally, heavy ploughing was shown to exacerbate erosion in post fire forest areas. We studied the fire of 2011 to calibrate the erosion model LANDSOIL to evaluate the impact of fires in Maciera, part of the Caramulo region in NW Portugal. For that, land use maps from 2000 to nowadays were classified, the DEM was improved with the inclusion of terraces and about 40 extreme rainfall events were selected to feed the model. Once the model was calibrated, we simulated the impact of the 2011 fire on soil erosion and repeat the same method for 2 previous fires. Finally, we created future land use maps based on narrative scenarios that were developed from socio-economic surveys sent to local researchers. Four types of scenarios were applied: business-as-usual, land productivity, environmental protection and sustainable trade-off scenarios. The impact of different land managements and land uses was then assessed on soil erosion.

Abstract

International audience; Vineyards of southern France are important environments for the quality of agricultural production and for the peculiarity of their landscapes. In a changing world, where these environments are experiencing new challenges, land use (LU) and climate change play a central role in hydrological and soil erosion processes. The study area is a 91ha hilly catchment (Roujan), located in the Occitanie region around 25 kilometres from the southern coast, with an average elevation of 102 meters a.s.l.; in the present land coverage configuration, it contains 62% vineyard land cover. Effect of land use and climate changes were modelled by comparing 2050 to present conditions using LandSoil, a model simulating water and tillage sediment redistribution on fine spatial (1-10 metres) and temporal (rainfall event) scales. We tested the climatic impact, simulating on medium terms with: 1) a 20 years climatic historical series (1992-2012) and, 2) a future climatic scenario (2040-2060), as the result of RCM (ALADIN53) on a RCP4.5 CO2 emission configuration. Land use change is accounted for in considering land cover and soil-water conservations techniques evolutions through four different scenarios developed from socio-economic surveys such as: 1) Business-as-usual, following the last decade's LU trend changes (i.e., decreasing of vineyards surface abandoning and or grouping small fields); 2) Productivist (i.e., introducing grape varieties with high productivity, adopting vineyard irrigation, as well as accepting the use of fungicides and pesticides and reducing the grass strips percentage); 3) Environmental protection (i.e., prohibiting pesticides to protect ground waters, creating additional vegetative strips to decrease the erosion and to increase the local biodiversity); 4) Sustainable (i.e., adapting the productivity to local demand and valorising small quality productions with a balanced land-use pattern and architecture). Results show that even in a monitored catchment, where the landscape architecture is preserved from soil loss, interesting differences are observed when land use changes dramatically, as in the proposed LU scenarios, pushing the soil loss balance to very different equilibrium conditions.

35. Considering water and soil conservation works in Life Cycle Assessment: focus on contour ridges and erosion impacts

Abstract

Soil is a rare natural resource and it is at the center of the main issues in agronomy, environment and land use planning. At global level, erosion is one of the major soil degradation processes and it is responsible for the decrease in agronomic potential of soils and in agricultural land surfaces. Water and soil conservation works (WSCW) are built to protect soil from erosion. The financial and environmental cost the WSCW construction is very high. However, the positive impacts of WSCW are not taken into account in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The objectives of this study is to intergrate the impact of WSCW on soil quality in LCA. There are different types of WSCW with different functions and they act differently on erosion process. In this study we focussed on contour ridges (CR) because they are associated to crop systems. CR are generally built in upland areas to reduce runoff and erosion, to increase on-site deposition of eroded particles and to increase local water infiltration. They modify water and soil flows at catchment scale, so it is necessary to use a model able to calculate the inventory flow at the catchment and not at the plot level. In this study we present a methodology to integrate the impact of CR on topsoil erosion at the catchment level and to compute characterization factors in presence of such WSCW. The proposed method was applied in a case study in semi-arid context in central Tunisia (Merguellil watershed) which presents the issues of over-exploitation of water resources, accelerated land degradation and a high expansion of conservation works. In order to investigate the impact of WSCW on topsoil erosion, diffrent catchment scenarios (with and without CR) and land use types were tested using soil redistribution model (LandSoil model). For life cycle impact assessment, we focussed on two midpoint impact categories of LANCA soil functions : erosion resistance and mechanical infiltration. The CFs were calculated using the two models : LANCA and LandSoil models. These CFs were then compared. The results showed how contour ridges can modify topsoil erosion process, the erosion impact depend on location of landuse and contour ridges increase mechanical infiltration of soil. However, these impacts were not considered in LANCA model. In conclusion, It is necessary to integrate the positive impacts of contour ridges in life cycle assessment. It will be also neccessary to integrate the impact of the other types of WSCW in topsoil erosion impact modelling.

Abstract

International audience; Among the various existing soil erosion models, the Landsoil model has recently been developed to spatially simulate both water and tillage erosion at the event scale. The aim is to apply this model to an intensively farmed area that has been submitted to an important land consolidation in the 1960s, in order to assess the evolution of past and still existing lynchets. The 240 ha study site is located in Seuilly, in the south western Parisian basin (France). The area is mostly under crop cultivation. Monthly calendars of soil surface characteristics have been established for each main crop, and are for the first time adapted to account for the major soil variations observed in the study area. A detailed DEM has been computed using LIDAR data. These data had to be carefully filtered to remove any non-perennial microtopographic feature. 6 mn rainfall data were used to characterize the rainfall events. As the site is not instrumented, the effect of infiltration capacity and suspended sediment load values is approximated. Results show a very contrasted soil redistribution in the study area, mainly due to the different soil types, thus leading to a contrasted morphological evolution of the landscape. The upper, predominantly flat part of the study site with silty soils is mainly under the influence of water erosion, whereas the lower, calcareous and clayey part of the site is mostly under the influence of tillage redistribution processes, leading a progressive flattening of the former lynchets, whereas current lynchets are still developing.

Abstract

Landscape evolution in agricultural contexts is primarily the result of soil redistribution processes done by human activity and water erosion. The analysis of such soil dynamics in archaeological areas is useful to understand the evolution of the landscape structures. This study is focused on the area of Aksum (Ethiopia), one of the most relevant archaeological sites in East Africa, where the flourishing and decay of the Aksumite Kingdom (400yBC, 800yAD) took place. It provided favorable conditions for long term approach to the study of soil conservation techniques since they have been maintained from ancient times to present. In the present study, three terrace systems have been surveyed and analysed in terms of soil loss across the last two millennia by physical and archaeological evidences. Tillage and water erosion has been simulated by a long-term expert-system model (LandSoil) (Ciampalini et al., 2011) based on a raster distributed-approach accounting the principal components in soil erosion-deposition processes. The results of model analysis, integrating tillage erosion, diffusive and concentrated erosion have been compared and calibrated with the plough marks technique (Ciampalini et al., 2008; 2011), soil loss computing procedures such as the PSIAC model for Ethiopian Highlands (Negussie et al., 2005) and a reparameterisation of P factor (USLE) for stone-bounds (Desta et al., 2005). This analysis provides values for tillage soil displacement and water erosion comparable with these reported in the literature, accounts for the relative influence of both mechanical and hydrological processes, and confirms the high efficiency of these traditional soil conservation practices.

International audience; Modelling is an appropriate methodology for understanding space-time evolution in soil and landscape processes. Such modelling presumes the ability to produce quantitative models of soil redistribution in the landscape to test the effects of different scenarios of land management and climate evolution. The LandSoil model (Landscape design for Soil conservation under soil use and climate change) is designed for the analysis of agricultural landscape evolution at a fine spatial resolution scale [1-10 meters] and a mid-term temporal scale [10-100 years]. Based on the Stream model, LandSoil is suitable for simulations from parcel to catchment scale. It is spatially distributed, event-based, and considers water and tillage erosion processes. Specificity of the model is the use of a dynamic representation of the agricultural landscape through parameters such as a monthly representation of soil surface properties, hydrologic pathways and accounting a climate component based directly on rainfall events. We present the characteristics of the model, sensitivity analysis to the main erosion processes parameters and its application to a scenario study on a Mediterranean site. Sensitivity analysis shows the importance both of soil surface properties and flow connectivity on catchment soil redistribution, allowing make decisions and planning soil and water conservation strategies. Catchment scale simulations on a degraded scenario, maximising the hydraulic conductivity whit the removal of all the grass bands between fields, indicate a global increase of the soil erosion rate (+29%), with spatial variability depending on the specific soil use type and a significant loss of trapping efficiency at field borders (-81%).

Abstract

International audience; Soils and landscapes evolve simultaneously. Soil evolution is controlled by redistribution and transformation processes influenced by topographic and climatic parameters, with also a major contribution of management strategies. The perennial landscape features have a strong influence on soil spatial distribution (geometry) and soil genesis. Building landscapes which enhance soil resilience to degradation processes and increase soil services appears as a promising way to adapt to forthcoming climatic and land use evolutions. The presentation aims to synthetize major results from a research program nicknamed Landsoil which focused on the evolution of agricultural soils over medium time scales (decades to centuries) in relation to changing conditions of land use and climate. Precise study of the soil 3D organization in three contrasted landscapes (Brittany, Touraine, Languedoc-Roussillon) enabled to link soil redistribution in space to landscape components (field geometry, hedges or ditches network) and their past evolution. A dynamic and high resolution spatial modeling approach was developed coupling erosion processes and soil organic matter evolution and was calibrated over past evolution using dating techniques (Cs137, C14, OSL). The resulting Landsoil model was afterwards applied in a prospective manner under different scenarios of land use and climate change over the 21th century. Indicators of soil vulnerability and soil resilience were defined and tested by the comparison of several prospective scenarios applied on a same landscape and by comparison of the contrasted landscapes.
