Titanium oxides (TiO2) nanostructures coating is helpful in improving the utilization of titanium in many areas due to its multifunctional properties. This study introduces a novel approach for the in-situ fabrication of nano cones-like structures of rutile titanium oxides (NCS–TiO2) on the surface of titanium utilizing femtosecond laser technology. Rutile titanium oxides were synthesized with a height of around 80 nm and a diameter of 100 nm, forming NCS that imparts higher hardness, wear resistance, and biocompatibility. Molecular dynamic simulation provides valuable insights into the three-stage formation process of NCS-TiO2. Molecular dynamic simulation revealed that the growth of rutile titanium oxides and the formation of nano cones-like structures are attributed to the interplay between femtosecond laser ablation and the accumulation of thermal energy. The proposed method offers a versatile and straightforward approach for creating functional surfaces on metal substrates, enabling broad applicability and ease of implementation, specifically in titanium and its alloys. This advancement holds great potential for expanding the scope of titanium-based materials and their applications, paving the way for improved mechanical properties and biocompatibility in diverse fields.

Abstract Developing an antibiotic-free wound dressing with effective hemostasis and antibacterial and antioxidant capacity is highly desirable. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol-tannic acid porous nanofiber sponge (3D-TA) was prepared via electrospinning. Compared with two-dimensional (2D) fiber membrane, the unique fluffy 3D-TA nanofiber sponge had high porosity, water absorption and retention ability, hemostatic capacity. Furthermore, the 3D sponge functionalized by tannic acid (TA) endow the sponge with high antibacterial and antioxidant capacity without loading antibiotics. In addition, 3D-TA composite sponges have shown highly biocompatibility against L929 cells. The in vivo experiment shows the 3D-TA is enable to accelerate wound healing. This newly 3D-TA sponges hold great potential as wound dressings for future clinical application.

In the treatment of various cancers, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been extensively studied as an effective therapeutic modality. As a potential alternative to conventional chemotherapy, PDT has been limited due to the low Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) yield of photosensitisers. Herein, a nanoplatform containing mesoporous Fe3O4@TiO2 microspheres was developed for near-infrared (NIR)-light-enhanced chemodynamical therapy (CDT) and PDT. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been shown to be a very effective PDT agent; however, the hypoxic tumour microenvironment partly affects its in vivo PDT efficacy. A peroxidase-like enzyme, Fe3O4, catalyses the decomposition of H2O2 in the cytoplasm to produce O2, helping overcome tumour hypoxia and increase ROS production in response to PDT. Moreover, Fe2+ in Fe3O4 could catalyse H2O2 decomposition to produce cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals within tumour cells, which would result in tumour CDT. The photonic hyperthermia of Fe3O4@TiO2 could not only directly damage the tumour but also improve the efficiency of CDT from Fe3O4. Cancer-killing effectiveness has been maximised by successfully loading the chemotherapeutic drug DOX, which can be released efficiently using NIR excitation and slight acidification. Moreover, the nanoplatform has high saturation magnetisation (20 emu/g), making it suitable for magnetic targeting. The in vitro results show that the Fe3O4@TiO2/DOX nanoplatforms exhibited good biocompatibility as well as synergetic effects against tumours in combination with CDT/PDT/PTT/chemotherapy.

Abstract The hollow TiO2 anode material has received great attention for next-generation LIBs because of its excellent stability, environmental friendly, and low volume change during lithiation/delithiation. However, there are some problems associated with the current anatase TiO2 anode materials in practical application owing to low lithium-ion diffusivity and poor reversible theoretical capacities. The introduction of defects has been turned out to be a significant and effective method to improve electronic conductivity, especially oxygen vacancies. In this paper, a facile hydrothermal reaction and subsequent chemical vapor deposition method were successfully used to fabricate Co@TiO2−x -carbon hollow nanospheres. These results suggest that the synthesized product exhibits good rate performance and superior cycling stability.

Bacterial infections are a serious public health issue that threatens the lives of patients because of their ability to induce other lethal complications without prompt treatment. Conventional antibiotic therapy can cause bacterial resistance and other adverse effects. It is highly desirable to develop effective and antibiotic‐independent therapeutic strategies to treat various kinds of bacterial infections. Herein, sonodynamic‐enhanced piezoelectric materials MoS2 and Cu2Oheterostructure that responds to exogenous ultrasound (US) and generates reactive oxygen for Staphylococcus aureus elimination are developed. It is shown in the results that the polariton charge induced by piezoelectric MoS2 nanosheets under US irradiation can accelerate the transfer of electric in Cu2O. Furthermore, US irradiation induces valence conversion from Cu(I) to Cu(II), which can accelerate glutathione oxidation significantly and destroy the bacterial antioxidant defense system. Hence, the as‐prepared piezoelectric‐enhanced sonosensitizer possesses a highly effective antibacterial efficacy of 99.85% against S. aureus under US irradiation for 20 min, with good biocompatibility. Herein, effective ultrasonic piezocatalytic therapy is offered through constructing heterogeneous interfaces with ultrasonic piezoelectric response.

Bone implants with antibacterial and osteogenic properties are important for clinical applications, but creating both properties simultaneously remains challenging. Here, the authors demonstrate a self-activating implant using a hydroxyapatite and molybdenum disulfide coating which accelerates bone regeneration and at the same time prevents bacterial infection.

MXene nanosheets have shown exciting potential in nanomedicine because of their large surface area, intense near-infrared (NIR) absorbance, and good biocompatibility. However, their development in the direction of treating tumors is constrained by the limitations of existing design methodologies. These methodologies lack control over the size and distribution of tumors. Moreover, their photodynamic therapy (PDT) effect is poor. To address this unmet medical need, a simple strategy that processes MXene with carbon nanotube (CNT) into a three-dimensional (3D) honeycomb structure having anti aggregation capacity was established. The structure can be used in disease phototherapy against tumors, bacteria, and viruses, such as photothermal therapy (PTT), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and multimodal synergistic therapy. In the present study, 3D CNT/MXene microspheres were obtained by the template method and spray-drying method. The microspheres possessed special photothermal effects and photothermal stability under NIR laser irradiation. Furthermore, the developed microspheres could achieve a maximum of 85.6% drug loading capability of doxorubicin (DOX). Under light irradiation at 650 and 808 nm, 3D CNT/MXene microspheres could efficiently produce singlet oxygen due to the effectiveness of CNTs as carries for Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) photosensitizers present on the MXene surface. Furthermore, in vitro studies had showed that 3D CNT/MXene-DOX effectively inhibited the proliferation of HeLa cells. Hence, this study provides a promising platform for future clinical applications to realize PTT/PDT/chemotherapy combination cancer treatment based on MXene.

Magnesium (Mg) metals have been widely used in various fields as one of the most promising lightweight structural materials. However, the low corrosion resistance and poor mechanical properties restrict its applications. Surface treatments are common approach to enhance the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of Mg metals. Among them, laser surface treatment generates novel tissues and structures in situ on the sample surface, thereby improving properties of mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. We briefly describe the changes in surface organization that arise after laser treatment of Mg surfaces, as well as the creation of structures such as streaks, particles, holes, craters, etc., and provide an overview of the reasons for the alterations. The effect of laser processing on wettability, hardness, friction wear, degradation, biocompatibility and mechanical properties were reviewed. At last, the limitations and development trend of laser treatment on Mg metals research were further pointed out.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), with their high theoretical specific capacity and energy density, have great potential to be a candidate for secondary batteries in the future. However, Li-S batteries suffer from multiple issues and challenges, for example, uneven growth of lithium dendrites, low utilization of the active material (sulfur), and low specific capacity. This paper reports a low-cost and anodic oxidation method to produce niobium pentoxide with a porous structure (P-Nb2O5). A simple one-step process was used to synthesize P-Nb2O5 with porous structures by anodizing niobium at 40 V in fluorinated glycerol. The porous Nb2O5 showed excellent rate capability and good capacity retention by maintaining its structural integrity, allowing us to determine the advantages of its porous structure. As a result of the highly porous structure, the sulfur was not only provided with adequate storage space and abundant adsorption points, but it was also utilized more effectively. The initial discharge capacity with the P-Nb2O5 cathode rose to 1106.8 mAh·g−1 and dropped to 810.7 mAh·g−1 after 100 cycles, which demonstrated the good cycling performance of the battery. This work demonstrated that the P-Nb2O5 prepared by the oxidation method has strong adsorption properties and good chemical affinity.

Abstract Porous titanium dioxide (TiO2) matrix deposited with upconversion luminescence agent (CaY)F2:Tm3+,Yb3+ was sol–gel prepared using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres as sacrificing template and tetrabutyl titanate as TiO2 precursors. The resulted photocatalysts were subsequently characterized by X‐ray diffraction, scanning microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectra (PL) etc. The photocatalytic activity and biocompatibility of TiO2/(CaY)F2:Tm3+,Yb3+ were evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) and fibroblast cytotoxicity analysis, respectively. The results revealed that (CaY)F2:Tm3+,Yb3+ nanoparticles were well dispersed onto the pore walls of porous TiO2 matrix to generate a biocompatible composite. In addition, TiO2/(CaY)F2:Tm3+,Yb3+ was found to show excellent photocatalytic activity in both UV and infrared spectra, highlighted with the fact that (CaY)F2:Tm3+,Yb3+ nanocrystals can be excited to release UV light under near infrared light source, which can in consequence active TiO2. When the mass ratio of TiO2 to (CaY)F2:Tm3+,Yb3+ nanocrystals is 2:1, the best photocatalytic efficiency can be achieved with most of UV light released by (CaY)F2:Tm3+,Yb3+ absorbed by TiO2 to induce photo‐oxidation. The outstanding photocatalytic performance along with its biocompatibility, makes TiO2/(CaY)F2:Tm3+,Yb3+ a promising candidate in environmental and biomedical applications.

Preferable antibacterial property and osteogenesis are the permanent pursuit for metallic implants. However, it is difficult to satisfy both the properties. In fact, implants may be contaminated with bacteria during storage and surgery, leading to inflammation. Therefore, the antibacterial property of biomaterial surfaces is required not only in the human environment but also at room temperature. In this study, porous structures loaded with a thermosensitive poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogel on a nitinol (NiTi) substrate were constructed. When the temperature is 25 ​°C, almost all bacteria cannot adhere to the sample surface due to the abundant hydration layer of the PNIPAM hydrogel. Meanwhile, when the temperature is 37 ​°C, the structure of the PNIPAM hydrogel collapses and the hydration layer disappears due to the temperature change. However, the porous structures lock water in the pores, which results in a high-hydration-rate sample surface. This surface has few bacterial adhesion sites; nevertheless, the adhesion of larger cells to the surface is not impeded by the porous structure. In addition, the PNIPAM hydrogel is soft and biocompatible, so the sample can have better cell adhesion and proliferation than a bare NiTi alloy. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the porous NiTi sample loaded with the thermosensitive PNIPAM hydrogel has the antibacterial property before implantation and the dual function of inhibiting bacterial adhesion and promoting cell adhesion and proliferation after implantation, which shows promising applications in the biomedical field such as orthopedic implantation.

Abstract Near-infrared (NIR)-light responsive graphene have been shown exciting effect on cancer photothermal ablation therapy. Herein, we report on the preparation of Fe3O4-decorated hollow graphene microspheres (rGO@Fe3O4) by a facile spray drying and coprecipitation method for the magnetically targeted and NIR-responsive chemo-photothermal combination therapy. The microspheres displayed very high specific surface area (~ 120.7 m2 g−1) and large pore volume (~ 1.012 cm3 g−1), demonstrating distinct advantages for a high loading capacity of DOX (~ 18.43%). NIR triggered photothermal effect of the rGO@Fe3O4 microspheres responded in an on-off manner and induced a high photothermal conversion efficiency. Moreover, The Fe3O4 on the microspheres exhibited an excellent tumor cells targeting ability. The chemo-photothermal treatment based on rGO@Fe3O4/DOX showed superior cytotoxicity towards Hela cells in vitro. Our studies indicated that rGO@Fe3O4/DOX microcapsules have great potential in combined chemo-photothermal cancer treatment.

Bacterial infections and inflammation are two main factors for delayed wound healing. Coaxial electrospinning nanofibrous patches, by co-loading and sequential co-delivering of anti-bacterial and anti-inflammation agents, are promising wound dressing for accelerating wound healing. Herein, curcumin (Cur) was loaded into the polycaprolactone (PCL) core, and broad-spectrum antibacterial tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) was loaded into gelatin (GEL) shell to prepare PCL-Cur/GEL-TH core-shell nanofiber membranes. The fibers showed a clear co-axial structure and good water absorption capacity, hydrophilicity and mechanical properties. In vitro drug release results showed sequential release of Cur and TH, in which the coaxial mat showed good antioxidant activity by DPPH test and excellent antibacterial activity was demonstrated by a disk diffusion method. The coaxial mats showed superior biocompatibility toward human immortalized keratinocytes. This study indicates a coaxial nanofiber membrane combining anti-bacterial and anti-inflammation agents has great potential as a wound dressing for promoting wound repair.

Bone wax, primarily composed of beeswax and softening agent, is a century-old material used to control bleeding of disrupted bone surfaces by acting as a mechanical barrier to seal the wound. The current bone wax products are commonly packed in easy-to-open foil in the form of sterile sticks or plates, with excellent malleability and smooth consistency, enabling cost-effective and easy handling approach for bleeding control. It has also been reported that the inert nature of bone wax causes complications including foreign body reaction, infection promotion and bone healing inhibition. With the advances in biomaterials and the market boost of bone haemostatic materials, the arena of bone wax substitute research has expanded to a wide spectrum of material formulations and forms. However, the development of substitutes of bone wax for translation is a pivotal yet challenging topic because currently a potential candidate is recommended to be just as simple to use, effective and inexpensive to produce as traditional bone wax but also be absorbable and osteogenic. This review provides an overview of bone wax including its history, clinical applications and associated complication. In addition, emerging substitutes of bone wax and outlooks of future directions including the standardised evaluation methods are also discussed as an effort to catalyse the innovation and translation of bone haemostatic agents in the near future.The translational potential of this article: Occurrence of osseous haemorrhage is common in surgically incised or traumatically fractured bone. It is essential to stop bone bleeding to avoid further pathologic consequences such as tissue necrosis and eventually mortalities due to blood loss. Medical sterile bone wax is a classical material for haemostasis of bone during orthopaedic surgeries, thoracic surgeries, neurological surgeries and so on. Along with its widespread use, complications such as foreign body reaction, bone healing inhibition and infection promotion associated with bone wax are observed. With the growing knowledge in biomaterials and the boost of market of bone haemostatic materials, bone wax substitute research is thriving. An overview of bone and its substitutes together with evolution of their design criteria is carried out in this work, providing information for the innovation and translation of bone haemostatic agents in the near future. It is critical to construct stimuli-responsive multifunctional nanoparticles for the drug delivery system for cancer treatment. Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has a large specific surface area and decomposes quickly under acidic conditions, which presents an excellent potential in pH-sensitive drug carriers. However, the mere chemotherapeutic drug loaded into ZIF-8 is a monotherapy and may restrict the therapeutic efficacy of malignancies. In this work, an effective nanoparticle-based delivery platform is established to simultaneously encapsulate doxorubicin (DOX) and MXene quantum dot (MQD) in ZIF-8 nanoparticles (MQD@ZIF-8/DOX). Under near-infrared (NIR) laser (808 nm) and UV light (365 nm) irradiation, MQD@ZIF-8 demonstrates a high photothermal conversion efficiency and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, which shows excellent photothermal therapy and photodynamic therapy effects. Furthermore, the release of DOX-loaded into MQD@ZIF-8 nanoparticles is significantly increased under NIR laser irradiation and at pH 5.6, indicating that acidic conditions and NIR laser irradiation can be effectively combined to stimulate the drug release. The cellular experiments show that MQD@ZIF-8/DOX has an obvious killing effect on HeLa cells and achieves the combined anti-tumor effect of chemotherapy and phototherapy.

Bone substitutes with strong antibacterial properties and bone regeneration effects have an inherent potential in the treatment of severe bone tissue infections, such as osteomyelitis. In this study, vancomycin (Van) was loaded into zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) to prepare composite particles, which is abbreviated as V@Z. As a pH-responsive particle, ZIF-8 can be cleaved in the weak acid environment caused by bacterial infection to realize the effective release of drugs. Then, V@Z was loaded into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber by electrospinning to prepare PVA/V@Z composite bone filler. The drug-loading rate of V@Z was about 6.735%. The membranes exhibited super hydrophilicity, water absorption and pH-controlled Van release behavior. The properties of anti E. coli and S. aureus were studied under the pH conditions of normal physiological tissues and infected tissues (pH 7.4 and pH 6.5, respectively). It was found that the material had good surface antibacterial adhesion and antibacterial property. The PVA/V@Z membrane had the more prominent bacteria-killing effect compared with the same amount of single antibacterial agent containing membrane such as ZIF-8 or Van loaded PVA, and the antibacterial rate was up to 99%. The electrospun membrane had good biocompatibility and can promote MC3T3-E1 cell spreading on it.

The advantages of high energy density and low cost make lithium–sulfur batteries one of the most promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems. However, the electrical insulativity of sulfur and the serious shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) still impedes its further development. In this regard, a uniform hollow mesoporous Ni(OH)2@CNT microsphere was developed to address these issues. The SEM images show the Ni(OH)2 delivers an average size of about 5 μm, which is composed of nanosheets. The designed Ni(OH)2@CNT contains transition metal cations and interlayer anions, featuring the unique 3D spheroidal flower structure, decent porosity, and large surface area, which is highly conducive to conversion systems and electrochemical energy storage. As a result, the as-fabricated Li-S battery delivers the reversible capacity of 652 mAh g−1 after 400 cycles, demonstrating excellent capacity retention with a low average capacity loss of only 0.081% per cycle at 1 C. This work has shown that the Ni(OH)2@CNT sulfur host prepared by hydrothermal embraces delivers strong physical absorption as well as chemical affinity.

Combining multiple drugs or biologically active substances for wound healing could not only resist the formation of multidrug resistant pathogens, but also achieve better therapeutic effects. Herein, the hydrophobic fluoroquinolone antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) and the hydrophilic broad-spectrum antibiotic tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) were introduced into the coaxial polycaprolactone/gelatin (PCL/GEL) nanofiber mat with CIP loaded into the PCL (core layer) and TH loaded into the GEL (shell layer), developing antibacterial wound dressing with the co-delivering of the two antibiotics (PCL-CIP/GEL-TH). The nanostructure, physical properties, drug release, antibacterial property, and in vitro cytotoxicity were investigated accordingly. The results revealed that the CIP shows a long-lasting release of five days, reaching the releasing rate of 80.71%, while the cumulative drug release of TH reached 83.51% with a rapid release behavior of 12 h. The in vitro antibacterial activity demonstrated that the coaxial nanofiber mesh possesses strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. In addition, the coaxial mats showed superior biocompatibility toward human skin fibroblast cells (hSFCs). This study indicates that the developed PCL-CIP/GEL-TH nanofiber membranes hold enormous potential as wound dressing materials.

Abstract Biodegradable porous biomaterial scaffolds play a critical role in bone regeneration. In this study, the porous nano-hydroxyapatite/collagen/poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/graphene oxide (nHAC/PLGA/GO) composite scaffolds containing different amount of GO were fabricated by freeze-drying method. The results show that the synthesized scaffolds possess a three-dimensional porous structure. GO slightly improves the hydrophilicity of the scaffolds and reinforces their mechanical strength. Young’s modulus of the 1.5 wt% GO incorporated scaffold is greatly increased compared to the control sample. The in vitro experiments show that the nHAC/PLGA/GO (1.5 wt%) scaffolds significantly cell adhesion and proliferation of osteoblast cells (MC3T3-E1). This present study indicates that the nHAC/PLGA/GO scaffolds have excellent cytocompatibility and bone regeneration ability, thus it has high potential to be used as scaffolds in the field of bone tissue engineering.

Selective laser melting (SLM) is emerging as a promising 3D printing method for orthopedic and dental applications. However, SLM-based Ti6Al4V components frequently exhibit high roughness values and partial surface defects. Laser polishing (LP) is a newly developed technology to improve the surface quality of metals. In this research, LP is applied to improve the surface finish of components. The results show that the laser beam can neatly ablate the aggregates of metallic globules and repair cracks and pores on the surface, resulting in a smooth surface with nanocomposites. Overall, the results indicate that using LP optimizes surface morphology to favor fatigue behavior and osteoblastic differentiation. These findings provide foundational data to improve the surface roughness of a laser-polished implant and pave the way for optimized mechanical behavior and biocompatibility via the laser process.

Carbon-encapsulated Fe-C (Fe-C@C) nanoparticles with a divergently flower-like morphology were successfully synthesized for application as an adsorbing material by using freeze-drying and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. The Fe metallic source was first loaded onto a sodium chloride (NaCl) supporter via freeze-drying to obtain the Fe/NaCl composite powder. Then, Fe-C@C nanoparticles were synthesized in the temperature range of 300–450 °C via CVD of acetylene in the Fe/NaCl composite powder using Fe nanoparticles as catalysts and NaCl as supporters. Because the NaCl supporter is water-soluble, the synthesized Fe-C@C nanoparticles were easy to purify, and a high purity was obtained by simple washing and centrifugation. The optimal Fe-C@C nanoparticles, synthesized at 400 °C, possessed a unique divergently flower-like structure and a high specific surface area of 169.4 m2/g that can provide more adsorption sites for contaminants. Adsorption experiments showed that the flower-like Fe-C@C adsorbent exhibited high adsorption capacity (90.14 mg/g) and fast removal of methylene blue (MB). Moreover, the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles, with saturation magnetization of 36.544 emu/g, facilitated their magnetic separation from wastewater. Therefore, the novel flower-like Fe-C@C nanoparticles with integrated adsorptive and magnetic properties have the potential to be an effective adsorbent in dye wastewater treatment.

The Heusler alloy Ti2CrGe is a stable L21 phase with antiferromagnetic ordering. With band-gap energy (∼ 0.18 eV) obtained from a first-principles calculation, it belongs to the group of narrow band gap semiconductor. The band-gap energy decreases with increasing lattice compression and disappears until a strain of −5%; moreover, gap contraction only occurs in the spin-down states, leading to half-metallic character at the −5% strain. The Ti1, Ti2, and Cr moments all exhibit linear changes in behavior within strains of −5%– +5%. Nevertheless, the total zero moment is robust for these strains. The imaginary part of the dielectric function for both up and down spin states shows a clear onset energy, indicating a corresponding electronic gap for the two spin channels.

Magnesium/aluminium clad bars were fabricated by compound casting and multi-pass warm caliber rolling. A Ni interlayer prepared using a plasma spraying process was inserted between the parent metals to improve the interfacial characteristics during the casting process, and the effect of caliber rolling on the evolution of the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of the Mg/Ni/Al composites was investigated. The results show that the formation of Mg-Al intermetallic phases was impeded effectively by the Ni interlayer and a typical AZ31/Ni/6061 multilayer structure with metallurgical bonding was formed during the compound casting process. In addition, an inhomogeneous strain distribution in the AZ31 and 6061 alloys were characterized during the rolling process. The AZ31 clad layer accommodated a larger proportion of the plastic strain during the initial passes, while the strain in the Mg core layer increased with increasing number of passes. The Ni interlayer fragmented during the rolling process, and transformed into the dispersed particles at the interface. Meanwhile, the fresh AZ31 and 6061 base alloys squeezed out and bonded together under the rolling force, and a well-bonded interface with no visible defects was formed.

A novel nitrogen doped mesoporous carbon (NMPC) with a hierarchical porous structure is prepared by simple carbonizing the green algae, which is applied as a host material to encapsulate sulfur for lithium/sulfur (Li/S) battery. The NMPC exhibits high pore volume as well as large specific surface area, and thus sulfur content in the S/NMPC composite reaches up to 63 wt %. When tested in a Li/S battery, the S/NMPC composite yields a high initial capacity of 1327 mAh·g−1 as well as 757 mAh·g−1 after 100 cycles at a current rate of 0.1 C, a reversible capacity of 642 was achieved even at 1 C. This good electrochemical performance of the S/NMPC composite could be attributed to a unique combination of mesopority and surface chemistry, allowing for the retention of the intermediate polysuflides within the carbon framework.
