Abstract Although adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma (ACP) is a tumour with low histological malignancy, there are very few therapeutic options other than surgery. ACP has high histological complexity, and the unique features of the immunological microenvironment within ACP remain elusive. Further elucidation of the tumour microenvironment is particularly important to expand our knowledge of potential therapeutic targets. Here, we performed integrative analysis of 58,081 nuclei through single-nucleus RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics on ACP specimens to characterize the features and intercellular network within the microenvironment. The ACP environment is highly immunosuppressive with low levels of T-cell infiltration/cytotoxicity. Moreover, tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs), which originate from distinct sources, highly infiltrate the microenvironment. Using spatial transcriptomic data, we observed one kind of non-microglial derived TAM that highly expressed GPNMB close to the terminally differentiated epithelial cell characterized by RHCG, and this colocalization was verified by asmFISH. We also found the positive correlation of infiltration between these two cell types in datasets with larger cohort. According to intercellular communication analysis, we report a regulatory network that could facilitate the keratinization of RHCG+ epithelial cells, eventually causing tumour progression. Our findings provide a comprehensive analysis of the ACP immune microenvironment and reveal a potential therapeutic strategy base on interfering with these two types of cells.

Abstract Porous Ionic Liquids (PILs) have gained attention but facing challenges in catalysis, especially in liquid‐liquid two‐phase reactions due to limited catalytic sites and hydrophilicity control. This work engineered a Type III PILs (PILS‐M) using zeolitic imidazolate framework‐8 (ZIF‐8) confined phosphomolybdic acid (HPMo) as the microporous framework and N‐butyl pyridine bis(trifluoromethane sulfonyl) imide ionic liquid ([Bpy][NTf2]) as the solvent. The PILS‐M not only combines the advantages of traditional ionic liquids and microporous frameworks, including excellent extraction, high dispersion of catalytically active species, remarkable stability, etc., but also can make the inner surface of ZIF‐8 turned to be hydrophilic that favors the contact between aqueous hydrogen peroxide oxidant and catalytically active sites for the promotion of catalytic performance in reactive extractive desulfurization (REDS) processes of fuel oils. This study demonstrates Type III PILs' potential as catalysts for sustainable chemical processes, offering insights into versatile PILs applications in diverse fields.

BackgroundTo evaluate the cumulative summation (CUSUM) analysis of the learning curve for Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal resection of craniopharyngioma (EETC).MethodsRetrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 113 patients who underwent EETC by the same neurosurgery team of the first affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University from June 2012 to November 2020. The learning curve was created by the CUSUM method and analyzed, which was divided into two groups: the learning stage and stable stage based on the learning curve trend. The median operation time and minimum surgical case number was calculated and the operation time and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups.ResultsThe median operation time was 318 min. Common bean has two distinct domestication centers in Mesoamerica and in the Andes. The authors show that the Andean is the first gene pool successfully introduced in Europe and identify signature of pervasive introgression among gene pools and of selection for flowering underlying adaptation.

With the deployment of renewable energy and the increasing demand for power grid modernization, redox flow battery has attracted a lot of research interest in recent years. Among the available energy storage technologies, the redox flow battery is considered the most promising candidate battery due to its unlimited capacity, design flexibility, and safety. In this review, we summarize the latest progress and improvement strategies of common inorganic redox flow batteries, such as vanadium redox flow batteries, iron-chromium redox flow batteries, and zinc-based redox flow batteries, including electrolyte, membrane, electrode, structure design, etc. In addition, we introduce the latest progress in aqueous and non-aqueous organic redox flow batteries. We also focus on the modification mechanism, optimization design, improvement strategy, and modeling method of the redox flow battery reaction. Finally, this review presents a brief summary, challenges, and perspectives of the redox flow battery.

Abstract The fretting wear among the steel wires aggravates the wire rope’s fatigue damage, affects the service performance of the wire ropes, and threatens mine hoisting safety. In this paper, the practical friction behavior and wear mechanism among the wires in the wire rope are investigated. A series of tests were carried out on multiple steel wires in helical contact and tension-torsion coupling under different fretting parameters, twisting parameters, and lubrication conditions by self-made friction and wear testing machine. The results show that the coefficient of friction (COF) among the steel wires decreases slightly with increasing lateral loads and tension, and the effect of twist angle on the COF has opposite results under different lubrication conditions. Lateral loads, tension of the steel wires, twist angle, and lubrication condition all affect the fretting morphology among the steel wires. Fretting wear with larger twist angle structure leads to more energy loss. The energy loss of fretting is directly related to the fretting morphology among the contact surfaces, and the dissipated energy is lower in the two forms of complete slip and sticking. The wear depth and width increase with the increase of lateral loads, steel wire tension, and twist angle. And the wear width and depth under dry friction conditions are higher than those under oil lubrication conditions. In addition, the wear mechanism under dry friction conditions is mainly abrasive wear, adhesive wear, and fatigue wear. And the wear mechanism under oil lubrication conditions is mainly abrasive wear and fatigue wear.

Heterogeneous thermal-catalytic CO2 hydrogenation to alcohols using renewable energy is a highly attractive approach for recycling greenhouse gases into high-value chemicals and fuels, thereby reducing the dependence on fossil fuels, while simultaneously mitigating the CO2 emission and environmental problems. Currently, great advances have been made on the heterogeneous catalysts, but an in-depth and more comprehensive understanding to further promote this reaction process is still lacking. Herein, we highlight the thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of CO2 hydrogenation reaction firstly. Then, various reaction pathways for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol and higher alcohols (C2+ alcohols) have been discussed in detail, respectively, by combining the experimental studies and density functional theory calculations. On this basis, the key factors influencing the reaction performance, such as metal dispersion, support modification, promoter addition and their structural optimization, are summarized on the metal-based and metal-oxide-based catalysts. In addition, the catalytic performance of CO2 hydrogenation to alcohols and the relationship between structure and properties are mainly summarized and analyzed in the past five years. To conclude, the current challenges and potential strategies in catalyst design, structural characterization and reaction mechanisms are presented for CO2 hydrogenation to alcohols.

Glycine soja is the wild relative species of cultivated soybean. In this study, we investigated the population divergence and genetic basis of the local adaptation of wild soybean in China using genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of a population of 72 G. soja accessions. Using phylogenetic analysis, we observed that G. soja accessions clustered into three distinct groups, each corresponding to a specific geographic region, the northeastern region (NER), central region (CR), and southern region (SR), consistent with previous studies. Notably, we found a significant positive correlation between genetic and geographic distances. Further population structure analysis revealed each group was associated with an ancestral population and a specific geographic area. By utilizing the genome sequencing data of accessions from 16 different locations, we inferred the population history of these wild soybean groups. Our results indicate that the three groups diverged ~25,000 years ago, coinciding with the time of the last glacial maximum. The effective population size of the SR group expanded first, and subsequently, the NER and CR groups expanded approximately 5000 and 2500 years ago, respectively. Moreover, 83, 104, and 101 significant associated loci (SALs) were identified using genome-wide association analysis for annual mean temperature, annual precipitation, and latitude, respectively. Functional analysis of genes located in SALs highlighted candidate genes related to local adaptation. This study highlights the significant role of geographic isolation and environmental factors in shaping the genetic structure and adaptability of wild soybean populations. Furthermore, it emphasizes the value of wild soybean as a crucial genetic resource for enhancing the adaptability of cultivated soybeans, which have experienced a loss of genetic diversity due to domestication and intensive breeding practices. The insights gained from our research provide valuable information for the protection, conservation, and utilization of this important genetic resource.

Metal confinement catalyst MoS2/Pt@TD-6%Ti (TD, TS-1/Dendritic mesoporous silica nanoparticles composite) in dendritic hierarchical pore structures was synthesized and showed excellent sulfur-resistance performance and stabilities in catalytic hydrodesulfurization reactions of probe sulfide molecules. The MoS2/Pt@TD-6%Ti catalyst combines the concepts of Pt-confinement effect and hydrogen spillover of Pt noble metal. The modified micropores of Mo/Pt@TD-6%Ti only allow the migration and dissociation of small H2 molecules (0.289 nm), and effectively keep the sulfur-containing compounds (e.g. H2S, 0.362 nm) outside. Thus, the MoS2/Pt@TD-6%Ti catalyst exhibits higher DBT and 4,6-DMDBT HDS activities because of the synergistic effect of the strong H2 dissociation ability of Pt and desulfurization ability of MoS2 with a lower catalyst cost. This new concept combining H2 dissociation performance of noble metal catalyst with the desulfurization ability of transition metal sulfide MoS2 can protect the noble metal catalyst avoiding deactivation and poison, and finally guarantee the higher activities for DBT and 4,6-DMDBT HDS.

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) have emerged as one of the most potent techniques for hydrogen production. As the restricted step for SOEC, as well as the most predominant obstacle to the scaled application, oxygen evolution reaction (OER) should be urgently accelerated by developing potent electrocatalysts. Despite inferior electrochemical activity to cobalt-based materials, perovskite ferrites exhibit great potential in the future with regard to good intrinsic stability and durability, abundant reserves, and good compatibility with other SOEC components. In this work, fluorination is introduced to the typical perovskite ferrite to further intensify the OER process. Ab initio calculations combined with physical–chemical characterizations are performed to reveal the mechanism. The doped F− leads to debilitating the strength of the metal–oxygen bond and then reduces the energy for oxygen vacancy formation and ion migration, which renders improvements to sub-processes of OER on the anode. The well-verified material, PrBaFe2O5+δF0.1 (PBFOF), exhibited a low polarization resistance of 0.058 Ω cm−2. Single cells based on PBFOF showed a high current density of 2.28 A cm−2 at 750 °C under 1.3 V. This work provides a clear insight into the mechanism of fluorination on perovskites and high-activity anode material for SOEC.

In order to improve the water solubility and stability of β-carotene, nanoemulsions were prepared using tween 80, tween 60 and lecithin as emulsifiers and vitamin E as antioxidants. The particle size, light transmittance, color value, storage stability and application stability of the nanoemulsions were measured. The results showed that the vitamin E had a slight effect on the particle size and light transmittance of the nanoemulsions, but had no effect on the encapsulation efficiency and color value. There was no change in light transmittance of nanoemulsions during storage at 25, 37 ℃ and light for 28 days, but showed a downward trend when storaged at 55 ℃. The color value of the nanoemulsions did not change significantly during storage at 25 ℃ and light for 28 days, but decreased when storage at 37 and 55 ℃. Different content of vitamin E improved the color value retention rate of β-carotene. The addition of vitamin E significantly improved the application stability of β-carotene in acidic and neutral beverages, and the best stability of the beverages occurred when the vitamin E content was 3%.

The consensus optimal control problem for a class of linear multi-agent systems with directed communication networks is studied in this paper using adaptive dynamic programming. To overcome the restrictions of the agent’s low processing capability and to extend the actuator’s lifetime, consider the event-triggered. In the beginning, a dynamic event-triggered is provided, with several existing static event-triggered serving as special examples. When using the dynamic event-triggered, a longer interval can be shown between any two consecutive event-triggered. Designing a dynamic event-triggered control law becomes more challenging when implemented in directed networks. In addition, on the basis of dynamic event-triggered, a novel adaptive dynamic programming is used to construct a suitable dynamic event-triggered control law, which employs just the interaction information between agents and does not need model dynamics, overcoming the difficulty of solving the algebraic Riccati equation. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation results, and no agent exhibits Zeno behavior.

The BBAA subgenomes of hexaploid common wheat can be ‘extracted’ to constitute a viable and self-reproducing novel tetraploid wheat, termed extracted tetraploid wheat (ETW). Prior studies have shown ETW manifesting phenotypic abnormalities and alteration in gene expression and epigenetic modifications. No population level investigation has been conducted, leaving the issue unclear regarding whether developmental stability, an essential property evolved in all natural organisms, might have been undermined in ETW. Here, we measured variations in five morphological traits and somatic chromosomal stability in populations of ETW and of its hexaploid donor, a resynthesized hexaploid and a natural tetraploid wheat. We observed phenotypic defects in ETW. Meanwhile, we documented much greater within-population variations in ETW than in the other wheat genotypes, most probably due to disrupted developmental stability in ETW. Also, somatic structural chromosome variations were detected only in ETW. Comparative transcriptome analyses indicated that the disrupted developmental stability of ETW is likely linked to massive dysregulation of genome-wide gene expression rather than to genetic mutations. Population network analysis of gene expression implicated intrinsic connectivity among the variable traits, while gene set enrichment analysis provided possible links between dysregulated gene expression and interlaced trait variation.

Allopolyploidy through the combination of divergent genomes into a common nucleus at doubled dosage is known as a potent genetic and evolutionary force. As a macromutation, a striking feature of allopolyploidy in comparison with other mutational processes is that ‘genome shock’ can be evoked, thereby generating rapid and saltational biological consequences. A major manifestation of genome shock is genome-wide gene expression rewiring, which previously remained to be fully elucidated. Here, using a large set of RNAseq-based transcriptomic data of a synthetic allotetraploid wheat (genome AADD) and its parental species, we performed in-depth analyses of changes in the genome-wide gene expression under diverse environmental conditions at the subgenome (homoeolog) level and investigated the additional effects of homoeologous chromosomal segment exchanges (abbreviated HEs). We show that allopolyploidy caused large-scale changes in gene expression that were variable across the conditions and exacerbated by both stresses and HEs. Moreover, although both subgenomes (A and D) showed clear commonality in the changes, they responded differentially under variable conditions. The subgenome- and condition-dependent differentially expressed genes were enriched for different gene ontology terms implicating different biological functions. Our results provide new insights into the direct impacts of allopolyploidy on condition-dependent changes in subgenome expression and the additional effects of HEs in nascent allopolyploidy.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is the main cause of global warming and has a significant effect on both climate change and human health. In this study, Ni/Ti co-doped Sr1.95Fe1.2Ni0.1Ti0.2Mo0.5O6-δ (SFNTM) double perovskite oxides were prepared and used as solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) cathode materials for effective CO2 reduction. Ti-doping enhances the structural stability of the cathode material and increases the oxygen vacancy concentration. After treatment in 10% H2/Ar at 800°C, Ni nanoparticles were exsolved in situ on the SFNTM surface (Ni@SFNTM), thereby improving its chemisorption and activation capacity for CO2. Modified by the Ti-doping and the in situ exsolved Ni nanoparticles, the single cell with Ni@SFNMT cathode exhibits improved catalytic activity for CO2 reduction, exhibiting a current density of 2.54 A cm−2 at 1.8 V and 800°C. Furthermore, the single cell shows excellent stability after 100 h at 1.4 V, indicating that Ni/Ti co-doping is an effective strategy for designing novel cathode material with high electrochemical performance for SOEC.

Surfactants play a vital role in the delignification and saccharification of lignocellulosic biomass. A strategy for coupling surfactant-assisted alkaline pretreatment (SAP) with surfactant-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis (SEH) has been proposed for improving sugar recovery from a potential energy crop, Miscanthus sinensis. Poly (ethylene glycol) 2000 (PEG 2000) was found to be more efficient in SAP than in other tested surfactants. Compositional and structural analysis revealed that the SAP process with 1% of PEG 2000 produced more efficient lignin removal and microstructure disruption of the pretreated sample, thus indicating much higher reducing sugar yields of 544.4–601.2 mg/g compared to the samples that were untreated or pretreated by alkali alone. Moreover, SEH with 1% Tween 80, which could block the lignin-enzyme interactions, produced a substantial reduction of 33.3% in the enzyme loading to achieve a higher sugar recovery from the SAP sample.

The overuse of antibiotics in food animals has led to the development of bacterial resistance and the widespread of resistant bacteria in the world. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in food animals are currently considered emerging contaminants, which are a serious threat to public health globally. The current situation of ARB and ARGs from food animal farms, manure, and the wastewater was firstly covered in this review. Potential risks to public health were also highlighted, as well as strategies (including novel technologies, alternatives, and administration) to fight against bacterial resistance. This review can provide an avenue for further research, development, and application of novel antibacterial agents to reduce the adverse effects of antibiotic resistance in food animal farms.

Polyploidization is a driving force in plant evolution. Chromosomal variation often occurs at early generations following polyploid formation due to meiotic pairing irregularity that may compromise segregation fidelity and cause homoeologous exchange (HE). The trends of chromosomal variation and especially factors affecting HE remain to be fully deciphered. Here, by whole-genome resequencing, we performed nuanced analyses of patterns of chromosomal number variation and explored genomic features that affect HE in two early generations of a synthetic rice segmental allotetraploid. We found a wide occurrence of whole-chromosome aneuploidy and, to a lesser extent, also large segment gains/losses in both generations (S2 and S4) of the tetraploids. However, while the number of chromosome gains was similar between S2 and S4, that of losses in S4 was lower than in S2. HEs were abundant across all chromosomes in both generations and showed variable correlations with different genomic features at chromosomal and/or local scales. Contents of genes and transposable elements (TEs) were positively and negatively correlated with HE frequencies, respectively. By dissecting TEs into different classes, retrotransposons were found to be negatively correlated with HE frequency to a stronger extent than DNA transposons, whereas miniature terminal inverted elements (MITEs) showed a strong positive correlation. Local HE frequencies in the tetraploids and homologous recombination (HR) rates in diploids within 1 Mb sliding windows were significantly correlated with each other and showed similar overall distribution profiles. Nonetheless, non-concordant trends between HE and HR rates were found at distal regions in some chromosomes. At local scale, both shared and polymorphic retrotransposons between parents were negatively correlated with HE frequency; in contrast, both shared and polymorphic MITEs showed positive correlations with HE frequency. Our results shed new light on the patterns of chromosomal number variation and reveal genomic features influencing HE frequency in early generations following plant polyploidization.

Articular cartilage (AC), which covers the ends of bones in joints, particularly the knee joints, provides a robust interface to maintain frictionless movement during daily life due to its remarkable lubricating and load-bearing capacities. However, osteoarthritis (OA), characterized by the progressive degradation of AC, compromises the properties of AC and thus leads to frayed and rough interfaces between the bones, which subsequently accelerates the progression of OA. Hydrogels, composed of highly hydrated and interconnected polymer chains, are potential candidates for AC replacement due to their physical and chemical properties being similar to those of AC. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of hydrogel-based synthetic cartilage, or cartilage-like hydrogels, with a particular focus on their lubrication and load-bearing properties. The different formulations, current limitations, and challenges of such hydrogels are also discussed. Moreover, we discuss the future directions of hydrogel-based synthetic cartilage to repair and even regenerate the damaged AC.

By introducing the theory of social co-governance into the field of e-commerce intellectual property protection, this paper builds an evolutionary game model among the government, e-commerce platforms, and rights holders, and studies the conditions under the stakeholders form a stable equilibrium state under different constraints. Combined with numerical simulation, the influence of individual factors and factor combinations on the system stability is analyzed. Results shows that: Strictly controlling the action costs and response costs of all parties can enhance their willingness to actively deal with infringement issues; reasonable adjustment of the reward and punishment measures of government supervisory agencies can produce sufficient reverse shock and positive guidance to platform and operators; penalties should be imposed on government supervisory agencies that are not sufficiently supervised; strengthen the construction of the social environment for intellectual property protection, improve the social benefits of actively responding to infringement issues, and increase the sense of acquisition by the government, platforms and rights holders. And it provides certain positive references and suggestions for the government to formulate relevant policies.

China’s E-commerce market is very active. Despite the impact of COVID-19, the market has ushered in major development opportunities. Alongside, the level of intellectual property protection in China is constantly improving. However, there are relatively few studies on intellectual property protection in the field of E-commerce. This study introduces the theory of social cogovernance and explores the construction of China’s E-commerce intellectual property protection system with the participation of collective organizations. Evolutionary game method is applied to model construction. Through numerical simulation, the study analyzes the evolution of E-commerce platform and collective organization strategic choice. The results depict that improving the open space provided by E-commerce platforms for collective organizations and strengthening their public service capabilities can promote the construction of social cogovernance systems. The establishment of reasonable reward and punishment mechanisms can increase cooperation enthusiasm. We also discuss the theoretical and practical implications for governments, E-commerce platforms, and collective organizations, to improve the level of intellectual property protection in E-commerce. This study can provide suggestions for China’s E-commerce intellectual property protection, improve the overall level of intellectual property protection in China, and provide a reference for global E-commerce intellectual property protection.

Nitrogen doped carbon species (NC) was introduced into Fe based catalyst and applied into propane non-oxidative dehydrogenation. With characterizations of XRD, TEM and XPS, it was deduced that the NC modification induces the electrons transferred from NC species to Fe species, leading to electron-rich Fe species. Consequently, propane conversion and propene selectivity were increased by suppressing the by-products formation. It was also confirmed that such a modification strategy could be also extended to ones with different supports, iron precursors, and NC precursors.

Iron–chromium redox flow batteries (ICRFB) possess the advantage of low raw material cost, intrinsic safety, long charge–discharge cycle life, good life-cycle economy, and environmental friendliness, which has attracted attention from academia and industry over time. The proton exchange membrane (PEM) is an important part of the ICRFB system, impacting the efficiency and lifetime of the battery. Currently, the most widely used PEMs in the market are per-fluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes, which possess high electrolyte stability and achieve the separation of positive and negative electrolytes. In addition, the complex preparation process and extremely high market price limited the usage of PEM in ICRFB. In this paper, we developed a remanufactured membrane (RM) strategy from waste PFSA resins. The RM has higher electrical conductivity and better proton transport ability than the commodity membrane N212. In the cell performance test, the RM exhibits similar coulombic efficiency (CE) as N212 at different current densities, which is stabilized at over 95%. Furthermore, the voltage efficiency (VE) and energy efficiency (EE) of the RM are improved compared to N212. At a current strength of 140 mA cm−2, the degree of energy loss is lower in the RM, and after 60 cycles, the capacity decay rate is lower by only 16.66%, leading to long-term battery life. It is a cost-effective method for membrane recovery and reformulation, which is suitable for large-scale application of ICRFB in the future.

Escherichia coli is one of the most frequent causes of gastro-intestinal and extra-intestinal diseases in animals and humans. Due to overuse and misuse of antibiotics, recent years have seen a rapidly increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant (AR) Escherichia coli globally; particularly, AR E. coli from farm animal-associated sources and its antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are becoming a global concern, with clinical negative effects on both human and animal health. The aim of this review was to explore the prevalence trends of AR E. coli from farm animals, waste treatment, and aquatic environments. The disinfection methods of AR E. coli and possible alternatives to antibiotics were also highlighted. The current review highlights that the prevalence of AR E. coli from food animals, products, and animal waste is increasing at an alarming rate, but is reduced at waste treatment plants. Ultraviolet (UV) treatment, surface plasma oxidation, and biochar are commonly used to effectively eliminate AR E. coli. Some probiotics, plant extracts, and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are arousing interest as promising alternatives to antibiotics to fight against AR E. coli. The current review suggests that AR E. coli from farm animal-associated sources is prevalent and poses a serious global threat to public health. This review provides an avenue for further research, development, and application of novel strategies to minimize antibiotic resistance in E. coli of farm animal origin.

Red wine is a well-known alcoholic beverage, and is known to have phenolic compounds (PCs), which contribute to its antioxidant activity and have other beneficial advantages for human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the simulated gastro-intestinal digestion and the Caco-2 transepithelial transport assay on the PCs, bioavailability, and the antioxidant capacity of red wines. The contents of PCs in red wine were significantly reduced during most of the digestion phases. Phenolic acid had the greatest permeability, while the flavonols had the weakest. The bioavailability of PCs ranged from 2.08 to 24.01%. The result of the partial least squares structural equation model showed that the three phenols were positively correlated with the antioxidant activity of red wine. The contribution of anthocyanins was the largest (0.8667).

Abstract Machine learning has demonstrated potential in analyzing large, complex biological data. In practice, however, biological information is required in addition to machine learning for successful application.

Summary: Non-oxidative propane dehydrogenation (PDH) is an attractive reaction from both an industrial and a scientific viewpoint because it allows direct large-scale production of propene and fundamental analysis of C-H activation respectively. The main challenges are related to achieving high activity, selectivity, and on-stream stability of environment-friendly and cost-efficient catalysts without non-noble metals. Here, we describe an approach for the preparation of supported ultrasmall ZnO nanoparticles (2–4 nm, ZnO NPs) for high-temperature applications. The approach consists of encapsulation of NPs into a nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) layer in situ grown from zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 on a Silicalite-1 support. The NC layer was established to control the size of ZnO NPs and to hinder their loss to a large extent at high temperatures. The designed catalysts exhibited high activity, selectivity, and on-stream stability in PDH. Coke formation on n-butene cracking catalyst is the main reason for the reducing of its lifetime. To study the effects of acidity and textural properties on the coke formation process, a series of HY zeolite-type catalysts were prepared by ammonium hexafluorosilicate treatment (AHFS). NH3-TPD and Py-IR-TPD were used to systematically study the change law of zeolite acidity. It was found that with the increase of AHFS concentration, the acid density decreased, whereas the ratio of Brønsted acid to Lewis acid first increased and then decreased. Meanwhile, the percentage of Brønsted acid inside the supper cages increased and the strength of Brønsted acid increased with the degree of dealumination. Combined with in situ IR study on coke formation, the relationship between coking and acid site was revealed. It was found that the rate of coke formation on zeolites was affected by acid density, which is the rate of coke formation decreased with the decline of acid density. When the acid density remains at the same level, it was the acid strength that determined the coke formation rate—the stronger the acid strength, the faster the coke formation rate.

Abstract Background In diverse plant taxa, whole-genome duplication (WGD) events are major sources of phenotypic novelty. Studies of gene expression in synthetic polyploids have shown immediate expression and functional partitioning of duplicated genes among different tissues. Many studies of the tissue-specific homeolog expression partitioning have focused on allopolyploids that have very different parental genomes, while few studies have focused on autopolyploids or allopolyploids that have similar parental genomes. Results In this study, we used a set of reciprocal F1 hybrids and synthetic tetraploids constructed from subspecies (japonica and indica) of Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.) as a model to gain insights into the expression partitioning of homeologs among tissues in a developmental context. We assayed the tissue-specific silencing (TSS) of the parental homeologs of 30 key genes in the hybrids and tetraploids relative to the in vitro “hybrids” (parental mixes) using Sequenom MassARRAY. We found that the parental mix and synthetic tetraploids had higher frequencies of homeolog TSS than the F1, revealing an instantaneous role of WGD on homeolog expression partitioning. Conclusions Our observations contradicted those of previous studies in which newly formed allopolyploids had a low TSS frequency, similar to that of F1 hybrids, suggesting that the impact of WGD on homeolog expression requires a longer time to manifest. In addition, we found that the TSS frequency in the tetraploids varied at different growth stages and that roots had a much higher frequency of TSS than leaves, which indicated that developmental and metabolic traits may influence the expression states of duplicated genes in newly formed plant polyploids.

Regulatory changes include divergence in both cis-elements and trans-factors, which play roles in organismal evolution. Whole genome duplications (WGD) followed by diploidization are a recurrent feature in the evolutionary history of angiosperms. Prior studies have shown that duplicated genes have different evolutionary fates due to variable selection constraints and results in genomic compositions with hallmarks of paleopolyploidy. The recent sequential WGDs and post-WGD evolution in the common ancestor of cultivated soybean (Glycine max) and wild soybean (Glycine soja), together with other models of gene duplication, have resulted in a highly duplicated genome. In this study, we investigated the transcriptional changes in G. soja and G. max. We identified a sizable proportion of interspecific differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and found parental expression level dominance of G. max in their F1 hybrids. By classifying genes into different regulatory divergence types, we found the trans-regulatory changes played a predominant role in transcriptional divergence between wild and cultivated soybean. The same gene ontology (GO) and protein family (Pfam) terms were found to be over-represented in DEGs and genes of cis-only between JY47 and GS, suggesting the substantial contribution of cis-regulatory divergences to the evolution of wild and cultivated soybeans. By further dissecting genes into five different duplication modes, we found genes in different duplication modes tend to accumulate different types of regulatory differences. A relatively higher proportion of cis-only regulatory divergences was detected in singleton, dispersed, proximal, and tandem duplicates than WGD duplicates and genome-wide level, which is in line with the prediction of gene balance hypothesis for the differential fates of duplicated genes post-WGD. The numbers of cis-only and trans-only regulated genes were similar for singletons, whereas there were more genes of trans-only than cis-only in the rest duplication types, especially in WGD in which there were two times more trans-only genes than that in cis-only type. Tandem duplicates showed the highest proportion of trans-only genes probably due to some special features of this class. In summary, our results demonstrate that genes in different duplication modes have different fates in transcriptional evolution underpinned by cis- or trans-regulatory divergences in soybean and likely in other paleopolyploid higher organisms.

Abstract Gene and genome duplication fosters genetic novelty, but redundant gene copies would undergo mutational decay unless preserved via selective or neutral forces. Molecular mechanisms mediating duplicate preservation remain incompletely understood. Several recent studies showed an association between DNA methylation and expression divergence of duplicated genes and suggested a role of epigenetic mechanism in duplicate retention. Here, we compare genome-wide gene-body CG methylation (BCGM) and duplicate gene expression between a rice mutant null for OsMet1-2(a major CG methytransferase in rice) and its isogenic wild-type. We demonstrate a causal link between BCGM divergence and expression difference of duplicate copies. Interestingly, the higher- and lower-expressing copies of duplicates as separate groups show broadly different responses with respect to direction of expression alteration upon loss of BCGM. A role for BCGM in conditioning expression divergence between copies of duplicates generally holds for duplicates generated by whole genome duplication (WGD) or by small-scale duplication processes. However, differences are evident among these categories, including a higher proportion of WGD duplicates manifesting expression alteration, and differential propensities to lose BCGM by the higher- and lower-expression copies in the mutant. Together, our results support the notion that differential epigenetic marking may facilitate long-term retention of duplicate genes.

Under low carbon environment, a multi-period emissions reduction problem for manufacturer is investigated in the paper, where we assume that the government sets mandatory carbon emissions limit to all the enterprises by free of charge and allows the carbon emission quota to be traded or banked inter-temporally in the carbon trading market. Using discrete-time optimal control theory, the optimal emission reduction strategies for each period are firstly explored for maximizing the sum of net profit under cap-and-trade. The optimal carbon emissions, permit trading quantity, and the number of buying Certified Emission Reduction (CER) are obtained in each period. Furthermore, the effects of carbon price and initial carbon quota given by the government on the firm’s emission reduction strategies are discussed. Finally, numerical examples are illustrated to verify the proposed model, and some managerial inferences for a multi-period emission reduction are provided in conclusions.

Polyploidization has played a prominent role in the evolutionary history of plants. Two recent and sequential allopolyploidization events have resulted in the formation of wheat species with different ploidies, and which provide a model to study the effects of polyploidization on the evolution of gene expression. In this study, we identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between four BBAA tetraploid wheats of three different ploidy backgrounds. DEGs were found to be unevenly distributed among functional categories and duplication modes. We observed more DEGs in the extracted tetraploid wheat (ETW) than in natural tetraploid wheats (TD and TTR13) as compared to a synthetic tetraploid (AT2). Furthermore, DEGs showed higher Ka/Ks ratios than those that did not show expression changes (non-DEGs) between genotypes, indicating DEGs and non-DEGs experienced different selection pressures. For A-B homeolog pairs with DEGs, most of them had only one differentially expressed copy, however, when both copies of a homeolog pair were DEGs, the A and B copies were more likely to be regulated to the same direction. Our results suggest that both cis- and inter-subgenome trans-regulatory changes are important drivers in the evolution of homeologous gene expression in polyploid wheat, with ploidy playing a significant role in the process.

Energy crops are not easily converted by microorganisms because of their recalcitrance. This necessitates a pretreatment to improve their biodigestibility. The effects of different pretreatments, as well as their combination on the enzymatic digestibility of Arundo donax L. were systematically investigated to evaluate its potential for bioconversion. Dilute alkaline pretreatment (ALP) using 1.2% NaOH at 120 °C for 30 min resulted in the highest reducing sugar yield in the enzymatic hydrolysis process because of its strong delignification and morphological modification, while ferric chloride pretreatment (FP) was effective in removing hemicellulose and recovering soluble sugars in the pretreatment stage. Furthermore, an efficient two-step ferric chloride-alkaline pretreatment (FALP) was successfully developed. In the first FP step, easily degradable cellulosic components, especially hemicellulose, were dissolved and then effectively recovered as soluble sugars. Subsequently, the FP sample was further treated in the second ALP step to remove lignin to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis of the hardly degradable cellulose. As a result, the integrated two-step process obtained the highest total sugar yield of 420.4 mg/g raw stalk in the whole pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis process; hence, the process is a valuable candidate for biofuel production.

Climate warming nowadays has caused people to increasingly enhance public awareness about carbon emissions from industries. In the storing industry, inventory management for deteriorating items is crucial in the business competition. To slow down the deterioration and ensure the quality of products, the items are usually stored in certain temperature-controlled environment. However, a lot of carbon emissions of the inventory system are caused by these warehousing activities. In a finite panning period, this paper studies a continuous review inventory system and proposes inventory models to analyze the impacts of carbon emissions on inventory system for deteriorating items with a general time-varying demand, in which shortages are allowed, and the customer demand during shortage period is partially backlogged till the next replenishment. Under carbon emission regulations, the existence and uniqueness of the optimal solution to each model is explored and comparisons of optimality among the proposed models are given. Numerical examples and robust analysis of the models are presented to illustrate the applicability in practice. Some management insights about inventory policies and emission reduction strategies are obtained.

The development of non-noble metal hydrogen evolution catalysts that can replace Pt is crucial for efficient hydrogen production. Herein, we develop a type of well-dispersed Ni2P on N-doped nanomesh carbon (NC) electrocatalyst by a facile pyrolysis method, which shows excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic performance. It is rather remarkable that the overpotential of Ni2P/NC prepared under optimal proportion is 108 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 current density in 1 M KOH solution with the tafel slope of 67.3 mV·dec−1, the catalytic activity has no significant attenuation after 1000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry (CV)method. The hydrogen evolution performance of the electrocatalytic is better than most similar catalysts in alkaline media. The unique mesh structure of the carbon component in the catalyst facilitates the exposure of the active site and reduces the impedance, which improves the efficiency of electron transport as well as ensuring the stability of the hydrogen evolution reaction. In addition, we prove that nitrogen doping and pore structure are also important factors affecting catalytic activity by control experiments. Our results show that N-doped nanomesh carbon, as an efficient support, combined with Ni2P nanoparticles is of great significance for the development of efficient hydrogen evolution electrodes.

In this study, effects of different pretreatment methods on the enzymatic digestibility of Pennisetum alopecuroides, a ubiquitous wild grass in China, were investigated to evaluate its potential as a feedstock for biofuel production. The stalk samples were separately pretreated with H2SO4, NaOH and FeCl3 solutions of different concentrations at 120 °C for 30 min, after which enzymatic hydrolysis was conducted to measure the digestibility of pretreated samples. Results demonstrated that different pretreatments were effective at removing hemicellulose, among which ferric chloride pretreatment (FCP) gave the highest soluble sugar recovery (200.2 mg/g raw stalk) from the pretreatment stage. In comparison with FCP and dilute acid pretreatment (DAP), dilute alkaline pretreatment (DALP) induced much higher delignification and stronger morphological changes of the biomass, making it more accessible to hydrolysis enzymes. As a result, DALP using 1.2% NaOH showed the highest total soluble sugar yield through the whole process from pretreatment to enzymatic hydrolysis (508.5 mg/g raw stalk). The present work indicates that DALP and FCP have the potential to enhance the effective bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass like P. alopecuroides, hence making this material a valuable and promising energy plant.

This paper investigates the effect of item-level RFID on inventory shrinkage in the retail supply chain, which consists of a risk-neutral manufacturer and a risk-averse retailer. Under conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) criterion, two different supply chain settings are discussed as follows. In the centralized setting, we develop the models in both RFID case and no RFID case, respectively. Comparisons between the two cases are made. In particular, a sufficient condition is given to judge whether to adopt item-level RFID. In the decentralized setting, we focus on discussing two different contract types including wholesale price contact and revenue sharing contract. Finally, number examples and sensitivity analysis are given to illustrate the proposed models. The results show that, for the centralized system, the sales-available rate, the recovery rate, and the tag cost are mainly the driving factors in evaluating the benefit of an item-level RFID. In particular, when the sales-available rate and the tag cost are quite small and the recovery rate is higher, the supply chain partners’ profits obtained by investment for RFID are improved significantly. For the decentralized system, under revenue sharing contract, Pareto improving outcome and coaffording risk can be achieved if the retailer sets an appropriate parameter for the manufacturer.

Somaclonal variation generally occurs in plants regenerated from tissue culture. However, fundamental issues regarding molecular characteristics, mutation rates and mutation spectra of plant somatic variation as well as their phenotypic relevance have been addressed only recently. Moreover, these studies have reported highly discrepant results in different plant species and even in the same plant genotype.We investigated heritable genomic variation induced by tissue culture in rice by whole genome re-sequencing of an extensively selfed somaclonal line (TC-reg-2008) and its wild type (WT) donor (cv. Hitomebore). We computed the overall mutation rate, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), small scale insertions/deletions (Indels) and mobilization of transposable elements (TEs). We assessed chromosomal distribution of the various types of genomic variations, tested correlations between SNPs and Indels, and examined concomitancy between TE activity and its cytosine methylation states. We also performed gene ontology (GO) analysis of genes containing nonsynonymous mutations and large-effect mutations, and assayed effects of the genomic variations on phenotypes under both normal growing condition and several abiotic stresses. We found that heritable somaclonal genomic variation occurred extensively in rice. The genomic variations distributed non-randomly across each of the 12 rice chromosomes, and affected a large number of functional genes. The phenotypic penetrance of the genomic variations was condition-dependent.Tissue culture is a potent means to generate heritable genetic variations in rice, which bear distinct difference at least in space (chromosomal distribution) from those occurred under natural settings. Our findings have provided new information regarding the mutation rate and spectrum as well as chromosomal distribution pattern of somaclonal variation in rice. Our data also suggest that rice possesses a strong capacity to canalize genetic variations under normal growing conditions to maintain phenotypic robustness, which however can be released by certain abiotic stresses to generate variable phenotypes.

In this study, the dehydrogenation component of Ga2O3 was introduced into ZSM-5 nanocrystals to prepare Ga2O3/ZSM-5 hollow fiber-based bifunctional catalysts. The physicochemical features of as-prepared catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, BET, SEM, STEM, NH3-TPD, etc., and their performances for the catalytic conversion of n-butane to produce light olefins and aromatics were investigated. The results indicated that a very small amount of gallium can cause a marked enhancement in the catalytic activity of ZSM-5 because of the synergistic effect of the dehydrogenation and aromatization properties of Ga2O3 and the cracking function of ZSM-5. Compared with Ga2O3/ZSM-5 nanoparticles, the unique hierarchical macro-meso-microporosity of the as-prepared hollow fibers can effectively enlarge the bifunctionality by enhancing the accessibility of active sites and the diffusion. Consequently, Ga2O3/ZSM-5 hollow fibers show excellent catalytic conversion of n-butane, with the highest yield of light olefins plus aromatics at 600 °C by 87.6%, which is 56.3%, 24.6%, and 13.3% higher than that of ZSM-5, ZSM-5 zeolite fibers, and Ga2O3/ZSM-5, respectively.

BackgroundDNA methylation is sensitive and responsive to stressful environmental conditions. Nonetheless, the extent to which condition-induced somatic methylation modifications can impose transgenerational effects remains to be fully understood. Even less is known about the biological relevance of the induced epigenetic changes for potentially altered well-being of the organismal progenies regarding adaptation to the specific condition their progenitors experienced.Methodology/principal findingsWe analyzed DNA methylation pattern by gel-blotting at genomic loci representing transposable elements and protein-coding genes in leaf-tissue of heavy metal-treated rice (Oryza sativa) plants (S0), and its three successive organismal generations. We assessed expression of putative genes involved in establishing and/or maintaining DNA methylation patterns by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR. We measured growth of the stressed plants and their unstressed progenies vs. the control plants. We found (1) relative to control, DNA methylation patterns were modified in leaf-tissue of the immediately treated plants, and the modifications were exclusively confined to CHG hypomethylation; (2) the CHG-demethylated states were heritable via both maternal and paternal germline, albeit often accompanying further hypomethylation; (3) altered expression of genes encoding for DNA methyltransferases, DNA glycosylase and SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling factor (DDM1) were induced by the stress; (4) progenies of the stressed plants exhibited enhanced tolerance to the same stress their progenitor experienced, and this transgenerational inheritance of the effect of condition accompanying heritability of modified methylation patterns.Conclusions/significanceOur findings suggest that stressful environmental condition can produce transgenerational epigenetic modifications. Progenies of stressed plants may develop enhanced adaptability to the condition, and this acquired trait is inheritable and accord with transmission of the epigenetic modifications. We suggest that environmental induction of heritable modifications in DNA methylation provides a plausible molecular underpinning for the still contentious paradigm of inheritance of acquired traits originally put forward by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck more than 200 years ago.
