The current study aimed to investigate the effects of school resumption on college students' mental health during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We used the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) to assess stress, depression, and anxiety, respectively, between same-age college students returning to school and those not returning to school. Of 1,598 students who completed the baseline survey (S1), 836 students completed a follow-up survey 10 months after school resumption (S2). There were statistically significant differences in stress and mild anxiety between male and female students ( p < 0.01). Comparison of PSS-10, PHQ-9, and SAS scores by perceived impact of COVID-19 showed significant differences (Welch test, p < 0.01). The correlation between PHQ-9 and SAS scores in school resumption and non–school resumption groups was relatively strong (adjusted R2 = 0.49 vs. 0.5). Multivariate linear regression showed that only PSS-10 ( p < 0.01) and SAS ( p < 0.05) scores significantly differed between returning and non-returning students. School resumption was an independent risk factor for PSS-10 and SAS scores. PSS-10, PHQ-9, and SAS scores were significantly higher in S1 than in S2 ( p < 0.01). During the COVID-19 pandemic, stress, anxiety, and depression were prevalent among college students; however, stress and anxiety were generally lower among college students returning to school than among non-returning students. An O2 -assisted, four-component reaction has been developed to synthesize a wide range of syn-1,3-amino alcohols in one step. The reaction proceeds by oxygenation of vinyl magnesium bromide (component-I) with O2 (component-II) to give a magnesium enolate of acetaldehyde, which undergoes addition to a chiral N-tert-butanesulfinyl imine (component-III) followed by a sequential addition with excess vinyl magnesium bromide (component-IV). The approach allows diastereoselective synthesis of anti/syn- and syn/syn-3-amino-1,5-diols in good yields with high diastereoselectivity. The method was illustrated in an efficient, four-step synthesis of piperidine alkaloid (-)-2'-epi-ethylnorlobelol.

Apocrine sweat gland excision is a successful surgical treatment for bromhidrosis used in clinical practice due to its efficacy and unobtrusive postoperative scar. However, a small quantity of apocrine sweat gland residue is an unavoidable intraoperative concern to minimize losses of the dermal vascular network induced by extensive excision of the apocrine sweat glands. However, the relationship between the degree of remaining glands and clinical efficacy is yet unknown. This study looked at the histopathology of preexcision and postexcision specimens from bromhidrosis patients to see a connection between residual apocrine sweat glands and clinical efficacy following apocrine sweat gland excision.Twenty-one patients with bromhidrosis were recruited from April 2018 to December 2020. In this study, a description self-controlled case series was applied, with the patient preoperative sample as the control. The entire axillary skin was excised before and immediately after apocrine sweat gland excision, and skin tissue hemotoxylin-and-eosin staining was conducted to assess and compare the remnant apocrine sweat glands. Furthermore, preoperative and 6-month postoperative NRS-11 odor scores were analyzed, as well as patient satisfaction after surgery.All patients had variable degrees of apocrine sweat gland excision residue, but they all passed clinical cure criteria and presented a high patient satisfaction rate.Apocrine sweat gland excision with a small quantity of apocrine sweat gland remnant can nevertheless result in a favorable clinical outcome and high patient satisfaction of bromhidrosis.

Vitamin A is involved in immune function, vision, reproduction, and cell differentiation and is essential for child growth. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) contributes significantly to mortality and morbidity in developing countries. This study assessed the current vitamin A status in Chinese children.A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 26 provinces in China between 2015 and 2018, and 277,064 children aged 0-14 years were enrolled. Data on sociodemographic factors and dietary supplements were obtained through interviews with their parents. Serum vitamin A concentrations were measured using HPLC. To reduce the sampling error, a weighted distribution was produced to estimate the distribution of serum vitamin A concentration in Chinese children. A new method was used calculate the CI.The results revealed that 10.4% (23.9 million) (95% CI: 10.1%-10.8%) of Chinese children aged 0-14 years were at risk of suffering from subclinical VAD (SVAD) (0.2 mg/L). Sick children, especially those with recurrent respiratory infections (21.3%, 95% CI: 20.5%-22.2%), were vulnerable to SVAD. A high prevalence of SVAD was observed in western and northeastern areas in China. Serum vitamin A concentrations in ethnic minority groups were significantly lower than those in Han Chinese children (p0.01).VAD is still a moderate public health problem in Chinese children, especially in those with respiratory symptoms. Regular consumption of vitamin A-rich foods should be promoted through nutrition education for parents.

Background:The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading rapidly worldwide, bringing great challenges to infection control professionals (ICPs). The study aims to understand the status quo and the situation of work and physical and mental health of Chinese infection control professionals (ICPs) during the epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), in order to complete hospital infection control work and respond to public health emergencies better.[1]Methods:The questionnaire was designed to conduct anonymous investigations onChinese ICPs relying on the questionnaire star applet during the epidemic of COVID-19.Results:A total of 1652 ICPs from 1265 hospitals were surveyed. 84.32% ICPs’ professional background was nursing; 33.9% could not be promoted in professional title; 62.65% ICPs’ daily income was lower than similar staff at the same level in the hospital; 98% thought that the hospital infection control discipline should be set up.During the epidemic, the ICPs did a lot of work, and most heads of the infectioncontrol department believed that the infection control department had a great role in this epidemic. During this epidemic, 90.47% ICPs worked more than 9 hours a day; the highest psychological stress score was 10 points(out of 10), accounting for 32.14%; 79.3% had worse sleep than usual. Most ICPs felt tired, frustrated and powerless frequently, but only 20.40% complained frequently or consistently. Conclusions:Chinese ICPs are facing difficulties in promotion of professional title, poor salary, high work intensity and high psychological pressure currently.They has undertaken a lot of work and played an important role in the prevention and control of COVID-19.

The incidence of ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) is increasing yearly, which seriously endangers human health. There is rarely any remarkable progress in the treatment of ICM from the available drugs. Recent research shows that natural herbal medicine may have beneficial effects in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The effective extracts of the herbs may improve myocardial ischemia through various actions, such as hemodynamic, hemorheological, and vascular actions, and on various cell biology aspects, such as intracellular calcium balance, mitochondria function, cell apoptosis, and scavenging free radicals. Here, we review the animal research progress and potential mechanisms in the treatment of ICM using extracts of well-known traditional Chinese herbal medicines.

To describe the nutrition level of vitamin A and vitamin E among pregnancy of Beijing and the trends from 2013 to 2016.A total of 5487 serum samples from pregnant women who simultaneous detection for the first time from January 2013 to December 2016 in Beijing were enrolled in the study, then high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) method was used to determine the concentration of serum vitamin A and vitamin E, and it was compared with serum concentrations of vitamin A, vitamin E in normal people. Qualitative analysis of the trend of vitamin A and vitamin E nutrition in pregnant women from 2013 to 2016.From 2013 to 2016, the serum concentration of vitamin A(median(four guantile sapcing))was 1. 23(1. 05-1. 44), 1. 40(1. 19-1. 68), 1. 51(1. 30-1. 75) and 1. 54(1. 30-1. 79) μmol/L, respectively. The total abnormal rate for four years running was 22. 3%, 14. 6%, 8. 1% and 8. 6%, respectively, with main performance of lacking(21. 6%, 13. 4%, 6. 8% and 6. 4%, respectively). The serum concentration of vitamin E(median(four guantile sapcing)) was 36. 00(28. 80-45. 00), 30. 72(25. 44-37. 92), 30. 00(24. 96-35. 52) and 31. 68(26. 40-37. 92) μmol/L, respectively. The total abnormal rate from 2013 to 2016 was 17. 4%, 7. 5%, 3. 6% and 4. 3%, respectively, with excess(17. 4%, 7. 5%, 3. 6% and 4. 0%, respectively) as the main performance.For the pregnancy of Beijing between 2013 and 2016, the nutrition level of vitamin A showed an increasing trend and serum vitamin E level showed a tendency to decrease first and then rise. The overall nutritional status of vitamin A and vitamin E had improved.

The development of robust damage detection methods for offshore structures is crucial to prevent catastrophes caused by structural failures. In this research, we developed an Improved Modal Strain Energy (IMSE) method for detecting damage in offshore platform structures based on a traditional modal strain energy method (the Stubbs index method). The most significant difference from the Stubbs index method was the application of modal frequencies. The goal was to improve the robustness of the traditional method. To demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed IMSE method, both numerical and experimental studies were conducted for different damage scenarios using a jacket platform structure. The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the IMSE method in damage location when only limited, spatially incomplete, and noise-polluted modal data is available. Comparative studies showed that the IMSE index outperformed the Stubbs index and exhibited stronger robustness, confirming the superiority of the proposed approach.

In this work, a sensor for quantitative detection of uric acid (UA) is successfully prepared by electrodepositing Nickel–Copper (Ni–Cu) alloy nanoparticles on poly (3,4-ethyldioxythiophene) modified nitrogen-containing grapheme (Ni–Cu/PEDOT/NGE). The anchoring of PEDOT and Cu–Ni alloy nanoparticles on NGE not only prevents the agglomeration of NGE, but also improves the catalytic activity of the composites. Ni–Cu/PEDOT/NGE shows high electrochemical performance to UA and the oxidation of UA on its interface was an action with two protons and two electrons. Under the optimized condition, the response current of the sensor is linear with UA concentration within the range of 0.1–10[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]M and 10–50[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]M. A low detection limit of 0.059[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]M at S/[Formula: see text] is obtained. Additionally, the fabricated electrochemical sensor with good sensitivity and selectivity to UA may be promising for practical clinical testing.

From the perspective of the effectiveness of internal control, according to the Stakeholder Theory, Principal-Agent Theory and Reputation Theory, this paper analyzes comparatively the influences of internal control on the assumption of corporate social responsibility (SCPS) from the accrual basis, and the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility (CSRF) from the cash flow system respectively. Using a sample of 1767 firms listed in China between 2011 and 2016, we find that effective internal control has significantly promoted enterprises to assume social responsibilities. Meanwhile, effective internal control substantially improves the fulfillment of corporate social responsibility. This study overcomes the current situation that the two concepts of assumption and fulfillment of corporate social responsibility have not been distinguished in previous literature. We suggest that, in the economic transition period, the positive role of internal control in corporate governance should be promoted to protect the legitimate rights and interests of stakeholders, the adverse impact of the principal-agent relationship between shareholders and management on corporate governance should be avoided, building high-quality internal control, enterprises achieve steady and sustainable development process by the positive reputation value and robust external monitoring mechanism. This research is of practical importance to strengthen the subsequent construction of the internal control system and the long-term practice of corporate social responsibility.

Although the relationship between board gender diversity and a firm&rsquo, s financial performance has been investigated before, the current study provides a valuable contribution by exploring the complex phenomenon of the mediating impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance on a firm&rsquo, s financial performance. The current study aims to explore whether corporate social responsibility (represented by the proxy variable of CSR reporting) mediates the relationship between boardroom gender diversity and firm performance. We use the pooled ordinary least square (OLS) regression to examine the above relationship by using data from 2008 to 2015. To control the likelihood of endogeneity we also use one-year lagged and two-stage least square (2SLS) regression models. Our results show that boardroom gender diversity is significant, positively correlated with firm performance, and CSR fully mediates the relationship between boardroom gender diversity and firm performance. In addition, four control variables (independent director, Chief executive officer (CEO power), board member meeting frequency, Big4, and leverage) have some influence on firm performance. These findings hold for a set of robustness tests. Our findings have the implication for the investors and regulators. For investors, our results show that the existence of female directors on the board can improve the firm performance. For regulators, our results advise the worldwide policy maker to give the importance to boardroom gender diversity. The paper contributes to the existing studies, by pioneering the investigations of the mediating role of CSR in the relation between boardroom gender diversity and firm performance in Chinese context.

To continue our previous work, the structure and some properties of a new series of 1,2,3,4-tetrazine 1,3-dioxides annulated with an imidazole ring or oxazole ring were studied in this paper. Four imidazolo-v-tetrazine 1,3-dioxides (ITDOs) I1–I4 and eight oxazolo-v-tetrazine 1,3-dioxides (OTDOs) O1–O8 were designed. We employed the density functional theory (DFT) in B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) to study their geometrical structures and the homodesmotic reaction method to calculate the enthalpies of formation. Detonation properties and stabilities were also studied. Generally speaking, ITDOs and OTDOs have more preferable stabilities than TTDOs or pyrazolo-TDOs. I3, I4, O1, and O2 were found to be comparable to the energy level of RDX; O5 and O6 are even as powerful as HMX. The stabilities analysis in this paper can also prove that the five-membered ring deformation and the steric hindrance change caused by the different substituents will affect the stabilities of the structures of 1,2,3,4-tetrazine 1,3-dioxides annulated with a five-membered nitrogen-rich heterocycle. Other factors, such as the position of the electron-withdrawing substituents or the position of coordinated oxygen atom, are worthwhile to investigate in future work.

This study aims to investigate whether firm performance influences corporate social responsibility reporting of Chinese listed companies. We have used the sample of all A-share listed firms on Shenzhen and Shanghai stock exchanges for the period 2008 to 2015. The authors used pooled ordinary least squares (OLS) regression as a baseline methodology. To control the possible problem of endogeneity we use one year lagged and two-stage least squares regression. We find that firm performance has a statistically significant impact on CSR reporting. Moreover, we see that firms with high performance are more likely to report CSR activities than low-performance firms. Additionally, five of the control variables (board size, CEO power, SOE, firm size, and Big4) have some influence on CSR reporting. These findings hold for a set of robustness tests. Our results have implications for the development of CSR reporting in developing countries like China. Our research suggests that, in China, companies with better financial performance undertake more CSR reporting. The paper contributes to the existing literature by investigating the effect of firm performance on CSR reporting of Chinese listed companies. Additionally, this paper enriches the current literature on CSR reporting and highlights the importance of a firm&rsquo, s financial performance for better environmental performance and reporting.

Lung cancer is one of the most prevalent types of cancer, but accurate diagnosis remains a challenge. The aim of the present study was to create a model using amino acids and acylcarnitines for lung cancer screening. Serum samples were obtained from two groups of patients with lung cancer recruited in 2015 (including 40 patients and 100 matched controls) and 2017 (including 17 patients and 30 matched controls). Using a metabolomics method, 21 metabolites (13 types of amino acids and 8 types of acylcarnitines) were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Data (from the 2015 and 2017 data sets) were analysed using a Mann-Whitney U test, Student's t-test, Welch's F test, receiver-operator characteristic curve or logistic regression in order to investigate the potential biomarkers. Six metabolites (glycine, valine, methionine, citrulline, arginine and C16-carnitine) were indicated to be involved in distinguishing patients with lung cancer from healthy controls. The six discriminating metabolites from the 2017 data set were further analysed using Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The PLS-DA model was verified using Spearman's correlation analysis and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. These results demonstrated that the PLS-DA model using the six metabolites (glycine, valine, methionine, citrulline, arginine and C16-carnitine) had a strong ability to identify lung cancer. Therefore, the PLS-DA model using glycine, valine, methionine, citrulline, arginine and C16-carnitine may become a novel screening tool in patients with lung cancer.

Previous research has demonstrated that for students with intellectual disabilities, improved self-determination skills are positively correlated with productivity and organization during school and quality of life outcomes in adulthood. Despite extensive investigation in these areas, the predictive relationship between self-determination and academic achievement for students with intellectual disabilities has not been fully established. This study utilized the sample from the National Longitudinal Transition Study-2 of 480 adolescents with intellectual disabilities in the United States in an attempt to provide a possible empirical explanation of the relationship between academic achievement and self-determination, taking into account the covariates of gender, family income and urbanicity. The structural equation model was found to closely fit the data: all path coefficients were statistically significant. The results of this study identify a strong correlation between self-determination and academic achievement for adolescents with intellectual disabilities, indicating a linear relationship of these skills and supporting an increased focus on the teaching of self-determination skills.

Improving collaboration among organizations is a goal of interagency educational teams, but collaboration is typically thought of as an ambiguous concept that cannot be quantified. To assess the collaborative strength of a state-level interagency team in a Midwestern state, team members completed the Levels of Collaboration Scale (Frey et al., American Journal of Evaluation 27(3):383, 2006) for three consecutive years. The team members then utilized the results of the social network analysis to support and sustain collaborative efforts. Findings revealed that the number of partnerships increased and the depth of collaboration expanded across the 3 years. Social network analysis results were utilized to develop collaboration strategies, thus influencing the expansion of the network across the 3-year period.

The high energy density compound 3-azido-4-[(4-nitrofurazan-3-yl)-ONN-azoxy]furazan was synthesized from 3-amino-4-[(4-azidofurazan-3-yl)-NNO-azoxy]furazan by a catalytic oxidation process. The structure of the compound was characterized by IR, NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The detonation performance of this compound was estimated by using density functional theory and the Monte Carlo method. The calculations predicted the density of the compound was 1.88 g·cm–3, the heat of detonation 1780.65 J·g–1, the detonation velocity 9150 m·s–1, and the detonation pressure 37.46 GPa.

Research suggests that self-determination skills are positively correlated with factors that have been shown to improve academic achievement, but the direct relationship among self-determination, self-concept, and academic achievement is not fully understood. This study offers an empirical explanation of how self-determination and self-concept affect academic achievement for adolescents with learning disabilities after taking into consideration the covariates of gender, income, and urbanicity. In a nationally representative sample ( N = 560), the proposed model closely fit the data, with all proposed path coefficients being statistically significant. The results indicated that there were significant correlations among the three latent variables (i.e., self-determination, self-concept, and academic achievement), with self-determination being a potential predictor of academic achievement for students with learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND This study observed the efficacy of ultrasonic technique with out-of-plane orientation and in-plane guidance in radial artery puncture and cannulation in intensive care unit (ICU) shock patients to elucidate the effect of this technique on the security of cannulation. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 88 ICU shock patients, randomized into a palpation (control) group and an ultrasound (experimental) group, received continuous intravenous sedation and analgesia. The palpation group patients underwent radial artery cannulation using the traditional palpation pulsation approach, and the ultrasound group patients underwent radial artery cannulation under out-of-plane orientation and in-plane guidance using an ultrasonic apparatus. Bis[4-nitraminofurazanyl-3-azoxy]azofurazan (ADNAAF), synthesized in our previous work [1], contains four furazan units connected to the linkage of the azo-group and azoxy-group. For further research, some theoretical characters were studied by the density functional theoretical (DFT) method. The optimized structures and the energy gaps between the HOMO and LUMO were studied at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level. The isodesmic reaction method was used for estimating the enthalpy of formation. The detonation performances were estimated with Kamlet-Jacobs equations based on the predicted density and enthalpy of formation in the solid state. ADAAF was also calculated by the same method for comparison. It was found that the nitramino group of ADNAAF can elongate the length of adjacent C-N bonds than the amino group of ADAAF. The gas-phase and solid-phase enthalpies of formation of ADNAAF are larger than those of ADAAF. The detonation performances of ADNAAF are better than ADAAF and RDX, and similar to HMX. The trigger bond of ADNAAF is the N-N bonds in the nitramino groups, and the nitramino group is more active than the amino group (-NH2).

Interagency collaboration facilitates strong linkages to adult agencies, which improves adult outcomes among youth with disabilities (Kohler & Field, 2003; Repetto, Webb, Garvan & Washington, 2002). State-level transition teams increase collaboration, reduce duplication of resources, improve professional development, and heighten the cross-flow of information (Blalock, 1996; Wehman, 1998). Using social network (Daly, 2010) and focus group analysis (Krueger & Casey, 2000), this mixed methods study examined changes in collaboration, as well as collaborative characteristics and activities, among members of one state-level transition team. Analysis of the social network indicated a significant increase in the network density. Furthermore, focus group results indicated a range of collaborative strategies that built group cohesion and facilitated movement toward improving transition and student outcomes.

We have performed a series of studies of vicinal-tetrazine 1,3-dioxides annulated with a range of five-membered heterocycles, considering their potential as high-energy, low-sensitivity explosives. In the present work, 12 pyrazolo-1,2,3,4-tetrazine 1,3-dioxides (pyrazolo-TDOs), P1-P12, were studied theoretically. Their geometrical structures in the gas phase were studied at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of density functional theory (DFT). Their gas-phase enthalpies of formation were calculated by the homodesmotic reaction method. Their enthalpies of sublimation and solid phase enthalpies of formation were also predicted. Their detonation properties were estimated with the Kamlet-Jacobs equations, based on their predicted densities and enthalpies of formation in the solid state. Their bond dissociation activation energies (BDAEs) and the available free space in the lattice of each compound were calculated to evaluate their stabilities. Salicornia bigelovii is an unusually salt-tolerant plant species and is able to continue to photosynthesize and grow in saline conditions. There is an interest in understanding the mechanisms of this salt tolerance. In this study, S. bigelovii plants grown under 400 mM NaCl had higher growth and higher photosynthetic capacity than those not grown with salt. The intensities of the fluorescence emission peaks in the thylakoid membrane spectra in the salt treatment were higher than in the control. PSII and PSI peaks of the control were blue-shifted, indicating that salt deficiency affects energy transfer and structural stability in PSII and PSI. Both SDS-PAGE and western blot illustrated that the PSI proteins PsaA and PsaB and the PSII proteins CP47 and CP43 were upregulated with salt treatment, which might partly explain the change in the energy transfer process. Furthermore, Lhcb1 was also stimulated by salt treatment while Lhcb2 and Lhcb3 did not show noticeable changes. This demonstrated that salt is important in the maintenance of photosynthesis. In summary, treatment with salt led to an increased amount of PsaA/B, CP47, CP43, and Lhcb1 with a concurrent increase in antennae size. These photosystem changes may be responsible for the adaptation of S. bigelovii to saline conditions.

Overwhelming evidence from leukemia research has shown that the clonal population of neoplastic cells exhibits marked heterogeneity with respect to proliferation and differentiation. There are rare stem cells within the leukemic population that possess extensive proliferation and self-renewal capacity not found in the majority of the leukemic cells. These leukemic stem cells are necessary and sufficient to maintain the leukemia. Interestingly, the BCR/ABL fusion gene, which is present in chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), was also detected in the endothelial cells of patients with CML, suggesting that CML might originate from hemangioblastic progenitor cells that can give rise to both blood cells and endothelial cells. Here we isolated fetal liver kinase-1–positive (Flk1+) cells carrying the BCR/ABL fusion gene from the bone marrow of 17 Philadelphia chromosome–positive (Ph+) patients with CML and found that these cells could differentiate into malignant blood cells and phenotypically defined endothelial cells at the single-cell level. These findings provide direct evidence for the first time that rearrangement of the BCR/ABL gene might happen at or even before the level of hemangioblastic progenitor cells, thus resulting in detection of the BCR/ABL fusion gene in both blood and endothelial cells.

The derivatives of 1,2,3,4-tetrazine may be promising candidates for high-energy density compounds and are receiving more and more attentions. In this study, a new derivative 6-amino-7-nitropyrazino[2,3-e][1,2,3,4]tetrazine 1,3,5-trioxide (ANPTTO) has been designed. The geometrical structure and IR spectrum in the gas phase were studied at the B3LYP/6-31G* level of density functional theory (DFT). The crystal structure was predicted by molecular mechanics method and refined by the GGA/BOP function of periodic DFT with the basis set of TNP. The gas phase enthalpy of formation was calculated by the homodesmotic reaction method. The enthalpy of sublimation and solid phase enthalpy of formation were also predicted. The detonation properties were estimated with the Kamlet-Jacobs equations based on the predicted density and enthalpy of formation in solid state. The available free space in the lattice and resonance energy were calculated to evaluate its stability. ANPTTO has a high stability and is a promising high energetic component with the density 2 g · cm(-3), detonation velocity 9000 m · s(-1), and detonation pressure 40 GPa. A synthetic route was proposed to provide a consideration for further study.

Fe3O4/PVP//Eu(BA)3phen/PVP magnetic-photoluminescent bifunctional bistrand-aligned composite nanofibers bundles based on ferroferric oxide(Fe3O4) nanoparticles and europium complex Eu(BA)3phen (BA = benzoic acid) were fabricated via electrospinning by employing a homemade parallel axial electrospinning setup with the side by side dual spinnerets for the first time. The structures, morphology, and properties of the as-prepared products were investigated in detail by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), a fluorescence spectrometer, and a vibrating sample magnetometer. SEM analysis showed the average diameter of the individual-strand fiber of the bistrand-aligned composite nanofibers bundles was 200 ± 25 nm. TEM image demonstrated that Fe3O4 nanoparticles were only dispersed into one strand of the bistrand-aligned composite nanofibers bundles, and the average diameter of Fe3O4 nanoparticles was about 15 nm. Under the excitation of 274 nm ultraviolet light, Fe3O4/PVP//Eu(BA)3phen/PVP bistrand-aligned composite nanofibers bundles exhibited red emissions of predominant peaks at 592 and 616 nm, which were respectively attributed to the 5D0 → 7F1 and 5D0 → 7F2 transitions of Eu3+ ions. The fluorescence intensity of the bistrand-aligned composite nanofibers bundles was higher than that of Fe3O4/Eu(BA)3phen/PVP composite nanofibers, and was decreased with the increase of the amounts of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The saturation magnetizations of the bistrand-aligned composite nanofibers bundles and the Fe3O4/Eu(BA)3phen/PVP composite nanofibers were about equal when the two nanostructures contained the same mass ratios of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, but the saturation magnetizations of the bistrand-aligned composite nanofibers bundles were increased with the increase of the amounts of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The new type Fe3O4/PVP//Eu(BA)3phen/PVP bistrand-aligned composite nanofibers bundles have potential applications in many fields due to their superparamagnetism behavior and high fluorescence intensity. Meanwhile, the research results will provide a new method for the preparation of the other two components of polymer fibers.

It has been known that glial line-cell derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) has the nutritional and protective effect in motor neurons. In this experiment, we investigated the character of GDNF mRNA expression in a facial nerve-striking model; combined with other scholars' experimental results; and analyzed what role GDNF plays in the regeneration process of injured motor nerves.We established a striking model in rabbit facial nerves with a striking gun with the striking velocity of 10 m/s and the total striking energy of 7.5 J. Then we detected the GDNF mRNA expression in facial neurons and axons with in situ hybridization on days 3, 7, 14 and 21 after striking. We counted the expression numbers of facial neurons and, compared with normal facial neurons and peripheral facial nerves.We detected GDNF mRNA expression in the facial neurons from day 3 to day 21 after the facial nerve injured by striking. The peak of GDNF mRNA expression appeared on the 7th day, and then the expression number of facial neurons decreased gradually. A high level expression was also detected on day 21. GDNF mRNA expression was not detected neither in Schwann cells nor in normal facial neurons from the 3rd day to the 21st day.GDNF is a kind of neurotrophic growing factor (NGF) that could be activated by injury. The character of GDNF mRNA expression was accordant to the process of nerve regeneration. These results showed that GDNF plays a very important role in the regeneration of injured motor nerves.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that the prevalence of chronic diseases is high among old people and they have poor chronic diseases knowledge. This study was therefore designed to evaluate the awareness rate of chronic diseases knowledge among people aged over 60 years, to explore its related factors and to provide evidence for future health education. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from April to August in 2011. People aged 60 years and above from 3 communities in Jinan were selected by cluster sampling. Nine hundred and twenty five participants were interviewed face-to-face using a structured questionnaire. RESULTS: The awareness rates of chronic diseases knowledge varied from 29.5% to 90.2%. Four healthy lifestyles including quitting smoking and less drinking, keeping broad-minded, maintaining balanced diet and moderate physical activity were best known (from 86.3% to 90.2%). The least known knowledge were 2 complications of hypertension: nephropathy (29.5%) and retinopathy (37.2%). Participants with the following characteristics or behaviors were more likely to have higher chronic diseases knowledge: younger age, female, Han Chinese, higher level of education, having health insurance, participating in societies, having family history of chronic diseases, frequently gathering with friends/relatives, usually going to provincial hospitals/hospitals affiliated with medical universities, usually going to municipal hospitals and usually going to community health center/station. CONCLUSIONS: Old people in Jinan had incomplete chronic diseases knowledge and the overall awareness rate was not high. The older people's chronic diseases knowledge should be improved and health education programs should target males, older people with lower educational level, having no health insurance, having no family history of chronic diseases, participating in no societies, and less frequently gathering with friends/relatives. Also, lower level medical facilities should improve their skills of health education.
