IntroductionIntercropping and soil properties both affect soil diazotrophic communities. However, the specific effects that alfalfa-maize intercropping has on diazotrophic networks and community diversity under different soil properties remain unclear.MethodsIn this study, we investigated the soil diazotrophic communities of two crop systems, alfalfa monoculture (AA) and alfalfa-maize intercropping (A/M), in two sites with similar climates but different soil properties (poor vs. average).Results and discussionThe diazotrophic network complexity and community diversity were higher at the site with poor soil than at the site with average soil (p < 0.05). Community structure also varied significantly between the sites with poor and average soil (p < 0.05). This divergence was mainly due to the differences in soil nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon contents between the two sites. At the site with poor soil, the A/M system had lower diazotrophic diversity, lower network complexity and greater competition between diazotrophs than the AA system (p < 0.05) because intercropping intensified the soil phosphorus limitation under poor soil conditions. However, in the average soil, it was the A/M system that had an altered diazotrophic structure, with an increased abundance of 11 bacterial genera and a decreased abundance of three bacterial genera (p < 0.05).ConclusionOur results indicated that the effects of alfalfa-maize intercropping on diazotrophic communities were soil property-dependent.

Abstract Metavalent bonding (MVB) is characterized by the competition between electron delocalization as in metallic bonding and electron localization as in covalent or ionic bonding, serving as an essential ingredient in phase‐change materials for advanced memory applications. The crystalline phase‐change materials exhibits MVB, which stems from the highly aligned p orbitals and results in large dielectric constants. Breaking the alignment of these chemical bonds leads to a drastic reduction in dielectric constants. In this work, it is clarified how MVB develops across the so‐called van der Waals‐like gaps in layered Sb2Te3 and Ge–Sb–Te alloys, where coupling of p orbitals is significantly reduced. A type of extended defect involving such gaps in thin films of trigonal Sb2Te3 is identified by atomic imaging experiments and ab initio simulations. It is shown that this defect has an impact on the structural and optical properties, which is consistent with the presence of non‐negligible electron sharing in the gaps. Furthermore, the degree of MVB across the gaps is tailored by applying uniaxial strain, which results in a large variation of dielectric function and reflectivity in the trigonal phase. At last, design strategies are provided for applications utilizing the trigonal phase.

PurposeTo report the design and baseline data of a 3-year cohort study in Beijing Pinggu District primary school students in China after COVID-19.MethodsNoncycloplegic and cycloplegic spherical equivalent refraction (SER) were measured, ocular biometry, including the axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and corneal power (CP), were collected before cycloplegia. Corneal radius (CR), AL-to-CR ratio, and lens power (LP) were calculated.ResultsAmong the 4,806 (89.1%) eligible students (51.5% male), the prevalence of emmetropia, myopia, mild hyperopia, and mild-to-high hyperopia was 12.8, 30.8, 53.0, and 3.3% after cycloplegia, respectively. Myopia increased from 2.5% in 6- to 71.6% in 12-year-old students, with 9- and 10-year-olds showing the most prominent increases. The median of cycloplegic SER was 0.50 (IQR = 1.63), and the noncycloplegic SER was −0.38 D (IQR = 1.50), which is more negative than the cycloplegic refraction. The mean AL increased with age, from 22.46 ± 0.70 mm to 24.26 ± 1.07 mm. The ACD increased from 3.38 ± 0.28 mm to 3.70 ± 0.30 mm, and the AL-to-CR ratio increased from 2.91 ± 0.08 to 3.12 ± 0.13 between 6- and 12-year-old students. AL, CR and LP explained the SER variance with R2 of 86.4% after adjusting the age and gender.Conclusions and RelevanceThe myopia prevalence since emergence of COVID-19 rapidly increased from 6- to 12-year primary school Chinese children, especially after 7 years of age. The non-cycloplegia SER overestimated the prevalence of myopia, and the cycloplegic SER is a more accurate and reliable method to assess the prevalence of refractive status.

Abstract Background Apocynum venetum L. is an important medicinal plant that is mainly distributed in the coastal areas and northwest of China. In addition to its high medical and economic value, its adaptation to saline-alkali and coastal saline lands makes A. venetum an ideal candidate for use in vegetation restoration. To date, the study of A. venetum has been limited in the northwest region of China, little attention has been paid to the genetic diversity and population structure of A. venetum populations in the coastal region. Here, we performed transcriptome sequencing of total RNA from A. venetum leaves and developed efficient expressed sequence tag-simple sequence repeat (EST-SSR) markers for analyzing the genetic diversity and population structure of A. venetum in the coastal region. Results A total of 86,890 unigenes were generated after de novo assembly, and 68,751 of which were successfully annotated by searching against seven protein databases. Furthermore, 14,072 EST-SSR loci were detected and 10,243 primer pairs were successfully designed from these loci. One hundred primer pairs were randomly selected and synthesized, twelve primer pairs were identified as highly polymorphic and further used for population genetic analysis. Population genetic analyses showed that A. venetum exhibited low level of genetic diversity (mean alleles per locus, N A = 3.3; mean expected heterozygosity, H E = 0.342) and moderate level of genetic differentiation among the populations (genetic differentiation index, F ST = 0.032–0.220) in the coastal region. Although the contemporary (mean m c = 0.056) and historical (mean m h = 0.106) migration rates among the six A. venetum populations were moderate, a decreasing trend over the last few generations was detected. Bayesian structure analysis clustered six populations into two major groups, and genetic bottlenecks were found to have occurred in two populations (QG, BH). Conclusions Using novel EST-SSR markers, we evaluated the genetic variation of A. venetum in the coastal region and determined conservation priorities based on these findings. The large dataset of unigenes and SSRs identified in our study, combining samples from a broader range, will support further research on the conservation and evolution of this important coastal plant and its related species.

Abstract Miscanthus is a promising lignocellulosic bioenergy crop for bioethanol production. To identify candidate genes and regulation networks involved in secondary cell wall (SCW) development in Miscanthus, we performed de novo transcriptome analysis of a developing internode. According to the histological and in-situ histochemical analysis, an elongating internode of M. lutarioriparius can be divided into three distinct segments, the upper internode (UI), middle internode (MI) and basal internode (BI), each representing a different stage of SCW development. The transcriptome analysis generated approximately 300 million clean reads, which were de novo assembled into 79,705 unigenes. Nearly 65% of unigenes was annotated in seven public databases. Comparative profiling among the UI, MI and BI revealed four distinct clusters. Moreover, detailed expression profiling was analyzed for gene families and transcription factors (TFs) involved in SCW biosynthesis, assembly and modification. Based on the co-expression patterns, putative regulatory networks between TFs and SCW-associated genes were constructed. The work provided the first transcriptome analysis of SCW development in M. lutarioriparius. The results obtained provide novel insights into the biosynthesis and regulation of SCW in Miscanthus. In addition, the genes identified represent good candidates for further functional studies to unravel their roles in SCW biosynthesis and modification.

Ternary PbTi[O.sub.x] films are deposited on Pt-covered Si substrates by using a combination of liquid injection atomic layer depositions of binary Ti[O.sub.x] and PbO films. The PbTi[O.sub.x] film deposited on a three-dimensional (3D) substrate has displayed uniform step coverage and better uniformity of cation composition, when compared to metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) films.

In adipose tissue, macrophages are the most abundant immune cells with high heterogeneity and plasticity. Depending on environmental cues and molecular mediators, adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) can be polarized into pro- or anti-inflammatory cells. In the state of obesity, ATMs switch from the M2 polarized state to the M1 state, which contributes to chronic inflammation, thereby promoting the pathogenic progression of obesity and other metabolic diseases. Recent studies show that multiple ATM subpopulations cluster separately from the M1 or M2 polarized state. Various factors are related to ATM polarization, including cytokines, hormones, metabolites and transcription factors. Here, we discuss our current understanding of the potential regulatory mechanisms underlying ATM polarization induced by autocrine and paracrine factors. A better understanding of how ATMs polarize may provide new therapeutic strategies for obesity-related diseases.

Tailings ponds serve as high-potential energy structures designed to store waste tailings and other industrial materials. However, they can give rise to significant environmental pollution and pose a substantial threat to social and economic development, as well as the safety of people’s lives and property. Seismic disasters can cause liquefaction of tailings, leading to destabilization and dam failure of tailings ponds, and the evolution of dynamic pore pressure of tailings can indirectly reflect the destabilization process of tailings ponds. Fine grain content is one of the main factors affecting the dynamic strength and pore pressure development of tailings. This article studies the microscopic characteristics of tailings material through microscopic observation, triaxial testing, discrete element simulation, and grain contact state theory, aiming to analyze the influence mechanism of fine grain content on the micromechanics of tailings. Based on the grain contact state theory, the tailings with different fine grain contents are classified into three types: coarse grain tailings, intermediate-size grain tailings, and fine grain tailings, and the grain contact is classified into four different states. In contact state 1, the vibration pore pressure exhibits a “fast-stable” development mode with increasing vibrations. In contact state 2 or 3, the vibration pore pressure develops linearly with vibrations. For contact state 4, the development of vibration pore pressure presents a “fast-stable-sharp” development mode. The effect of fine grain content (FC) on the liquefication of the tailings studied in the present work is as follows. When the fine grain content is FC<30%, the liquefaction resistance of the tailings decreases with the increase of FC. When FC>30%, the liquefaction resistance increases with the increase of FC. When FC=30%, the liquefaction resistance is the lowest, indicating that the critical threshold of the fine grain content of the tailings studied in the present work is FCth=30%.

Miscanthus lutarioriparius is a promising lignocellulosic feedstock for second-generation bioethanol production. However, the genomic resource for this species is relatively limited thus hampers our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying many important biological processes. In this study, we performed the first de novo transcriptome analysis of five tissues (leaf, stem, root, lateral bud and rhizome bud) of M. lutarioriparius with an emphasis to identify putative genes involved in rhizome development. Approximately 66 gigabase (GB) paired-end clean reads were obtained and assembled into 169,064 unigenes with an average length of 759 bp. Among these unigenes, 103,899 (61.5%) were annotated in seven public protein databases. Differential gene expression profiling analysis revealed that 4,609, 3,188, 1,679, 1,218, and 1,077 genes were predominantly expressed in root, leaf, stem, lateral bud, and rhizome bud, respectively. Their expression patterns were further classified into 12 distinct clusters. Pathway enrichment analysis revealed that genes predominantly expressed in rhizome bud were mainly involved in primary metabolism and hormone signaling and transduction pathways. Noteworthy, 19 transcription factors (TFs) and 16 hormone signaling pathwayrelated genes were identified to be predominantly expressed in rhizome bud compared with the other tissues, suggesting putative roles in rhizome formation and development. In addition, a predictive regulatory network was constructed between four TFs and six auxin and abscisic acid (ABA) -related genes. Furthermore, the expression of 24 rhizome-specific genes was further validated by quantitative real-time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis. Taken together, this study provide a global portrait of gene expression across five different tissues and reveal preliminary insights into rhizome growth and development. The data presented will contribute to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying rhizome development in M. lutarioriparius and remarkably enrich the genomic resources of Miscanthus. 1,2,4 trichlorobenzene (1,2,4-TrCB) is a persistent organic pollutant with chemical stability, biological toxicity, and durability, which has a significant adverse impact on the ecological environment and human health. In order to solve the pollution problem, bagasse cellulose is used as the basic framework and nano TiO2 is used as the photocatalyst to prepare composite carriers with excellent performance. Based on this, an intimate coupling of photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) system combining photocatalysis and microorganisms is constructed. We use the combined technology for the first time to deal with the pollution problem of 1,2,4-TrCB. The biofilm in the composite carrier can decompose the photocatalytic products so that the removal rate of 1,2,4-TrCB is 68.01%, which is 14.81% higher than those of biodegradation or photocatalysis alone, and the mineralization rate is 50.30%, which is 11.50% higher than that of photocatalysis alone. The degradation pathways and mechanisms of 1,2,4-TrCB are explored, which provide a theoretical basis and potential application for the efficient degradation of 1,2,4-TrCB and other refractory organics by the ICPB system.

Background: Xylan is the most abundant un-cellulosic polysaccharides of plant cell walls. Much progress in xylan biosynthesis has been gained in the model plant species Arabidopsis. Two homologous pairs Irregular Xylem 9 (IRX9)/9L and IRX14/14L from glycosyltransferase (GT) family 43 have been proved to play crucial roles in xylan backbone biosynthesis. However, xylan biosynthesis in grass such as Miscanthus remains poorly understood. Results: We characterized seven GT43 members in M. lutarioriparius, a promising bioenergy crop. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis revealed that the expression of MlGT43 genes was ubiquitously detected in the tissues examined. In-situ hybridization demonstrated that MlGT43A-B and MlGT43F-G were specifically expressed in sclerenchyma, while MlGT43C-E were expressed in both sclerenchyma and parenchyma. All seven MlGT43 proteins were localized to Golgi apparatus. Overexpression of MlGT43A-E but not MlGT43F and MlGT43G in Arabidopsis irx9 fully or partially rescued the mutant defects, including morphological changes, collapsed xylem and increased xylan contents, whereas overexpression of MlGT43F and MlGT43G but not MlGT43A-E complemented the defects of irx14, indicating that MlGT43A-E are functional orthologues of IRX9, while MlGT43F and MlGT43G are functional orthologues of IRX14. However, overexpression of all seven MlGT43 genes could not rescue the mucilage defects of irx14 seeds. Furthermore, transient transactivation analyses of MlGT43A-E reporters demonstrated that MlGT43A and MlGT43B but not MlGT43C-E were differentially activated by MlSND1, MlMYB46 or MlVND7. Conclusion: The results demonstrated that all seven MlGT43s are functionally conserved in xylan biosynthesis during secondary cell wall formation but diversify in seed coat mucilage xylan biosynthesis. The results obtained provide deeper insight into xylan biosynthesis in grass, which lay the foundation for genetic modification of grass cell wall components and structure to better suit for next-generation biofuel production. Abstract Background Hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) arising in the caudate lobe is rare and the treatment is difficult. The aim of this study is to summarize the experience of ultrasound-guided percutaneous ablation therapy for HCC located in the caudate lobe and to investigate the predictive factors of the treatment outcomes. Methods From August 2006 to June 2017, 73 patients (63 males and 10 females; mean age, 54.9 ± 11.6 years; age range, 25–79 years) with 73 caudate lobe HCCs (mean size, 2.6 ± 1.1 cm; size range, 1.0–5.0 cm) were treated with percutaneous ablation, including 33 patients with radiofrequency ablation (RFA), 23 patients with ethanol ablation (EA), and 17 patients with combination of RFA and EA. The treatment outcome and survival after ablation for caudate lobe HCC were assessed and the predictive factors were calculated by univariate and multivariate analyses. Results A total of 72 patients achieved complete ablation after the first or second session of ablation. The treatment effectiveness was 98.6% (72/73). During the follow-up, 16 tumors developed local tumor progression (LTP) and a total of 61 patients (61/73, 83.6%) were detected distant recurrence (DR). According to univariate and multivariate analyses, tumor size > 2 cm (hazard ratio[HR] = 3.667; 95% confidence interval[CI], 1.043–12.889; P = 0.043) was a significant prognostic factor of LTP after ablation for HCC in the caudate lobe, while tumor number (HR = 2.245; 95%CI, 1.168–4.317; P = 0.015) was a significant prognostic factor of DR. The mean overall survival time after ablation was 28.7 ± 2.8 months, without independent predictive factors detected. Four patients (4/73, 5.5%) were detected treatment-related major complications, without independent predictive factor detected. Conclusion Ultrasound-guided percutaneous ablation is a feasible treatment for a selected case with HCC in the caudate lobe. Tumor size > 2 cm increases the risk of LTP and intrahepatic tumor number is associated with DR after ablation.

Intimate coupling photocatalysis and biodegradation treatment technology is an emerging technology in the treatment of refractory organic matter, and the carrier plays an important role in this technology. In this paper, sugarcane cellulose was used as the basic skeleton, absorbent cotton was used as a reinforcing agent, anhydrous sodium sulfate was used as a pore-forming agent to prepare a cellulose porous support with good photocatalytic performance, and nano-TiO2 was loaded onto it by a low-temperature bonding method. The results showed that the optimal preparation conditions of cellulose carriers were: cellulose mass fraction 1.0%; absorbent cotton 0.6 g; and Na2SO4 60 g. The SEM, EDS and XPS characterization further indicated that the nano-TiO2 was uniformly loaded onto the cellulose support. The degradation experiments of Rhodamine B showed that the nano-TiO2-loaded composite supports had good photocatalytic performance. The degradation rate of 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene was more than 92% after 6 cycles, and the experiment of adhering a large number of microorganisms on the carriers before and after the reaction showed that the cellulose-based carriers obtained the required photocatalytic performance and stability, which is a good cellulose porous carrier.

Dynamic compaction machine (DCM) is a widely adopted ground reinforcement technology. However, dynamic compaction energy has a very significant impact on the surrounding environment. At present, the research on the impact of dynamic compaction mainly focuses on the effect of the tamping behavior of a single compactor in the working state, whereas the research on the impact of multiple compactors working jointly is rare. To study the impact of the dynamic compaction energy of multiple compactors working jointly on the surrounding environment, the dynamic response model for multiple compactors working in the same field was established based on the explicit dynamic analysis module in ABAQUS. The validity of the model was verified by comparison with the measured data. Based on this, the impact of the dynamic compaction energy of multiple compactors with different working conditions in terms of the arrangement, spacing, and working time interval was analyzed. The results showed that the arrangement and spacing of the compactors had a remarkable influence on the distribution of the dynamic compaction energy in the surrounding environment. Under the condition of multiple compactors working with a time interval of less than 10 s, the impact of the superimposed dynamic compaction energy due to the interaction of multiple compactors had to be considered.

Quaternary Pb(Zr,Ti)Ox [PZT] films were deposited at 240°C by a combination of liquid injection atomic layer depositions (ALD) of binary PbO, TiOx, and ZrOx thin films. We used water as the oxidant and two sets of precursors: Pb(C11H19O2)2 [Pb(DPM)2], Zr(C11H19O2)4 [Zr(DPM)4], and either Ti(OC3H7)2(C11H19O2)2 [Ti(Oi-Pr)2(DPM)2] or (TiOC3H7)4 [Ti(Oi-Pr)4]. These precursors were dissolved in ethylcyclohexane and separately injected into a vaporizer. The deposition rates of the metal elements were investigated as a function of the input of the solutions. We started the ALD-PZT process with Ti(Oi-Pr)2(DPM)2. When the input of one solution was increased, the deposition rates of the metal elements continued to increase or fluctuate, showing a complex interdependence. A PZT film deposited on a three-dimensional (3D) structure had an inhomogeneous cation composition. The film uniformity on the 3D structure was significantly improved by substituting Ti(Oi-Pr)2(DPM)2 with Ti(Oi-Pr)4. In this ALD-PZT process, self-regulated growths were confirmed for Pb and Zr. Although the deposition rate of Ti did not saturate due to a catalytic decomposition, this study suggests that the multilayer stacking ALD process is an effective method for building up homogeneous layers of multicomponent materials on desired 3D structures. Abstract Background miR-500a-3p has been demonstrated to be involved in the development, progression and metastasis in several human cancers. Constitutive activation of JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway has been reported to play an important role in the development and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).The purpose of this study was to determine the biological roles and clinical significance of miR-500a-3p in HCC and to identify whether miR-500a-3p has an effect on the activity of JAK/STAT3 signaling in HCC. Methods miR-500a-3p expression was examined by real-time PCR in 8 paired HCC tissues and individual 120 HCC tissues respectively. Statistical analysis was performed to explore the clinical correlation between miR-500a-3p expression and clinicopathological features and overall and relapse-free survival in HCC patients. In vitro and in vivo assays were performed to investigate the biological roles of miR-500a-3p in HCC. The bioinformatics analysis, real-time PCR, western blot and luciferase reporter assay were performed to discern and examine the relationship between miR-500a-3p and its potential targets. Clinical correlation of miR-500a-3p with its targets was examined in HCC tissues. Results miR-500a-3p is dramatically elevated in HCC tissues and cells and high expression of miR-500a-3p correlates with poor overall and relapse-free survival in HCC patients. Upregulating miR-500a-3p enhances, while silencing miR-500a-3p suppresses, the spheroid formation ability, fraction of side population and expression of cancer stem cell factors in vitro and tumorigenicity in vivo in HCC cells. Our findings further reveal miR-500a-3p promotes the cancer stem cell characteristics via targeting multiple negative regulators of JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway, including SOCS2, SOCS4 and PTPN11, leading to constitutive activation of STAT3 signaling. Moreover, the inhibitory effects of anti-miR-500a-3p on cancer stem cell phenotypes and activity of STAT3 signaling were reversed by silencing SOCS2, SOCS4 and PTPN11 in miR-500a-3p-downexpressing cells, respectively. Clinical correlation of miR-500a-3p with the targets was examined in human HCC tissues. Conclusion our results uncover a novel mechanism by which miR-500a-3p promotes the stemness maintenance of cancer stem cell in HCC, suggesting that silencing miR-500a-3p may serve as a new therapeutic strategy in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Intimate coupling of photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) has shown promise in removing unwanted organic compounds from water. In this study, bagasse cellulose titanium dioxide composite carrier (SBC-TiO2) was prepared by low-temperature foaming methods. The optimum preparation conditions, material characterization and photocatalytic performance of the composite carrier were then explored. By conducting a single factor test, we found that bagasse cellulose with a mass fraction of 4%, a polyvinyl alcohol solution (PVA) with a mass fraction of 5% and 20 g of a pore-forming agent were optimum conditions for the composite carrier. Under these conditions, good wet density, porosity, water absorption and retention could be realized. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the composite carrier exhibited good biologic adhesion. X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) results confirmed the successful incorporation of nano-TiO2 dioxide into the composite carrier. When the mass concentration of methylene blue (MB) was 10 mg L−1 at 200 mL, 2 g of the composite carrier was added and the initial pH value of the reaction was maintained at 6, the catalytic effect was best under these conditions and the degradation rate reached 78.91% after 6 h. The method of preparing the composite carrier can aid in the degradation of hard-to-degrade organic compounds via ICPB. These results provide a solid platform for technical research and development in the field of wastewater treatment.

Cu2O nanoparticles are investigated at atomic scale by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. It is found that growth {111} twinning is the most common type of defects in these nanoparticles. The atomic structure of the twinning boundaries is determined referring to the detailed image simulations based on the structure model refined by first-principles calculation. The twin boundary plane is along a {111} oxygen plane and the twinning shows a crystallographic relation with a symmetry operation of 180° rotation around a 〈111〉 axis perpendicular to the plane. The effect of the twinning on the stability of the particles is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
