The magnetoelectric (ME) laminated composite is an important multifunctional material for developing novel electronic devices that provide many applications in sensing, energy conversion, filtering, etc. Following the previous investigations, this paper proposes theoretical modeling to study the relationship between a bar-shaped ME laminated composite's enhancement effects and material properties. This composite has a breakthrough idea that produces two operating modes (sensing and transducing) in the same working process. Our analyses are based on the magneto-elastic-electric equivalent circuit and mechanical connections between an ME laminated composite and a piezoelectric plate. Our works not only predicted the ME outputs against magnetic field bias change but also studied the relationship of the length ratio between the ME laminated composite and the piezoelectric plate. The results showed that the ME outputs of the transduction mode are much bigger than the sensing mode at resonance, which strongly depended on the dimension and the physical properties of the sample. These findings provided a promising gate for the researchers to develop a single electronic device that combined sensing and power conversion.

Magnetoelectric (ME) composites with ferromagnetic and ferroelectric phases show a strong coupling between the magnetic and electric subsystems that occurs through mechanical strain. Such composites are suitable for applications such as transducers that convert magnetic and electric energies. An important issue that needs to be considered is the magnetic-to-electric energy conversion efficiency. For applications under high power, energy transduction requires a high mechanical stability that minimizes the loss during conversion. Here, the high drive mechanical stability of Mn-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) crystals has been enhanced by external magnetic field when bonded to Fe-rich Metglas foils. External field modulation stabilizes the mechanical quality factor under high power drive. A magnetoelectric gyrator was then made that had an excellent power conversion efficiency of $\eta ={92}$ %, but which also had a dramatically decreased size as compared to similar gyrators made of “hard” Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) ceramics. The findings provided an approach to optimizing the size-weight-power space of ME gyrators for power converters.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) reciprocal space mapping (RSM) was used to investigate how nanograted electrodes affect the nanodomain distribution and average crystal structure in near-surface regions of poled Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-30%PbTiO3 (PMN-30PT) single crystals. The RSM scans revealed a transverse broadening along the (H00) direction, which was quite different from that of either the rhombohedral (R) or monoclinic A (MA) phase. This broadening provides evidence of a non-uniform distribution of tilt angles between neighboring nanodomains, induced by a gradient in the applied electric field (E). Investigations of the front and back surfaces of the crystals revealed significant differences in the RSM scans. Gradients in the domain distribution and apparent symmetry may extend throughout the crystal thickness. The data evidence changes in the nanodomain distribution that results in adaptations of the average symmetry.

A Magneto-Electric (ME) gyrator with a superior power efficiency of 95 % has been achieved based on a two-phase solid-state ME laminate. This ME gyrator consists of a winding coil that generates a magnetic field as the first step to realize electromagnetic energy transfer. A magneto-electric composite, serving as the second step, then converts the power from magnetic to electric forms. The laminate consists of two iron-cobalt based amorphous alloy layers bonded to a lead zirconate titanate plate. It has a giant magneto-electric coefficient of around 2200 (V/cm)/Oe at its mechanical resonant frequency (≈ 44 kHz) in structure. Approaching methods based on maximum power transfer (MPT) efficiency theory and the equivalent loss factor (ELF) from the input port have been introduced to evaluate the power efficiency of the ME gyrator. The expected MPT efficiency is 96.5 % at a power volume density of 0.1 W/in3 (6.1 mWatt/cm3), and 93.2 % up to 20 W/in3 (1.22 W/cm3). The ELF explains that the magnetomechanical conversion efficiency is related to the volume of the magnetic phase which is the dominating term in the power efficiency.

Fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs) are increasingly used in thick primary load-bearing structures. Nevertheless, manufacturing and in-service defects occur with a higher chance as the FRP thickness increases and thus the potential structure defects should be detected and evaluated. To image defects in thick FRP over 10 mm thick, this study proposes a frequency-and-structure dependent time-corrected ultrasonic total focusing method (FS-TFM) based on Floquet wave theory, which differs from conventional TFM that the wave velocity correction along different propagation direction bases on not only the structural anisotropy and inhomogeneity of FRP, but also on the probing frequency. First an analytical Floquet-wave-based dynamic homogenization for a crossply FRP laminate is performed, to obtain the homogenization region and then the wave anisotropy and dispersion therein. Then numerical finite element analysis follows, to further interrogate the time domain feature of wave signals. With the understanding of wave propagation, by accurately correcting the wave velocity anisotropy related to both the inspected crossply FPR and wave frequency, the FS-TFM imaging technique is proposed to focus the defect-scattered wave energy on the defect location. In addition, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis of side-drilled-hole (O2 mm) imaging via different imaging algorithms shows that the proposed FS-TFM achieves the highest SNR at the frequency approaching the upper limit of the homogenization region. Finally, the experimental validation further indicates the potential of the proposed FS-TFM for accurate defect imaging in thick FRP.

Magnetoelectric (ME) power efficiency is a more important property than the ME voltage or the current coefficients for power conversion applications. This paper introduces an analytical model that describes the relation between the external magnetic field and the power efficiency in layered ME composites. It is a two-phase model. The first fragment establishes the expression between the magnetic field strength and the temperature increase within an operating period. It uses a magneto-elasto-electric equivalent circuit model that was developed by Dong et al. Following previous investigations; the main loss source is the mechanical power dissipation. The second fragment links the power efficiency and the temperature increase in a heat-balanced system. This method is generally used by researchers in the piezoelectric field. The analytical model and the experimental data shows that the decrease of the power efficiency in a laminated composite is between 5% and 10% for a power density of 10 W/in3 (0.61 W/cm3) to 30 W/in3 (1.83 W/cm3). The failure mechanism/process of ME composites under high power density can be estimated/monitored by the proposed method for ME composites in practical applications. Published version

This paper reports a dual-resonance power transfer effect and a dual-resonance I-V conversion for a bar-shaped ME gyrator made from a hard Pb(ZrxTi1−x)O3 (PZT) ceramic bar having a transverse polarization and a Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.92 (Terfenol-D) magnetostrictive alloy bar having a longitudinal magnetization bonded along their cross-section areas. A bar-shaped provides several advantages to a ME gyrator; such as dual resonance frequency along its length direction, as well as half-wave and full-wave vibration modes; reduced laminate bonding area avoiding adhesive breakdown; and ease of fabrication. The reported magnetoelectric gyrator effect originates from the mechanically mediated resonance piezoelectric and magnetostrictive effects in the PZT and Terfenol-D bars, respectively. We studied the influence of the length ratio between the Terfenol-D and piezoelectric bars. A power efficiency of 69.4% was obtained at the half wavelength resonance of 21.47kHz under optimal H Bias=1000 Oe and low power conditions. Under higher power drive of 8W/in3, an efficiency of 60.2% was found. This dual-resonance ME gyrator effect offers much promise in power transfer devices for power electronic applications.

We have deposited self-assembled BiFeO3-CoFe2O4 (BFO-CFO) thin films on (100)-oriented SrRuO3-buffered Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.62Ti0.38O3 (PMN-38PT) single crystal substrates. These heterostructures were used for the study of real-time changes in the magnetization with applied DC electric field (E DC ). With increasing E DC , a giant magnetization change was observed along the out-of-plane (easy) axis. The induced magnetization changes of the CFO nanopillars in the BFO/CFO layer were about ΔM/M rDC = 93% at E DC = −3 kv/cm. A giant converse magnetoelectric (CME) coefficient of 1.3 × 10−7 s/m was estimated from the data. By changing E DC , we found multiple(N ≥ 4) unique possible values of a stable magnetization with memory on the removal of the field.

International audience; Over the past two decades, magnetoelectric (ME) composites and their devices have been an important topic of research. Potential applications ranging from low power sensing to high power converters have been investigated. This review, first, begins with a summary of multiferroic materials that work at room temperature. Such ME materials are usually in composites, and their ME effect generated as a product property of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric composite layers. After that, mechanisms, working principles, and applications of ME composites from heterostructural uncooled magnetic sensors, energy harvesters to highly efficient power converters will be discussed. First, the development of ME sensors in terms of materials and structures to enhance their sensitivities and to reduce noise level is reviewed and discussed. Second, the structure of ME-based energy harvesters is discussed and summarized. Third, the development ME gyrators is summarized for power applications, including the current/voltage conversion, power efficiency, power density and figures of merit. Results demonstrate that our ME gyrator has the ability to satisfy the needs of power conversion with superior efficiency (>90%), offering potential uses in power electronic applications.

The coupling between the tetragonal phase (T-phase) of BiFeO3 (BFO) and CoFe2O4 (CFO) in magnetoelectric heterostructures has been studied. Bilayers of CFO and BFO were deposited on (001) LaAlO3 single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. After 30 min of annealing, the CFO top layer exhibited a T-phase-like structure, developing a platform-like morphology with BFO. Magnetic hysteresis loops exhibited a strong thickness effect of the CFO layer on the coercive field, in particular along the out-of-plane direction. Magnetic force microscopy images revealed that the T-phase CFO platform contained multiple magnetic domains, which could be tuned by applying a tip bias. A combination of shape, strain, and exchange coupling effects are used to explain the observations. Novel power-supply-free, surface-mount-type magnetoelectric passive current sensors were developed and integrated with a four-channel, 2.4-GHz wireless communication (transmitter and receiver) unit to form a new generation of wireless condition monitor for train traction systems. The wireless condition monitor was deployed in a field study on the East Rail Line in Hong Kong. Four pairs of magnetoelectric passive current sensors and single-channel wireless transmitters were installed, respectively, on and near the electric cables of four electric motor drives located underneath the 2 nd , 5 th , 8 th , and 11 th cars of a 12-car mainline train. The four-channel wireless receiver was housed in the driver's cab of the train to provide real-time wireless monitoring of the current signatures of the four electric motor drives due to the operation of the train traction system in steady-state and acceleration conditions. The monitored current signatures were post-processed to obtain the distributions of the ratio of harmonic-to-fundamental current, their total harmonic distortions and power factors as well as the frequency spectra. A practical implication and correlation of the post-processed data with the operating conditions of the train traction system was established for application of the proposed wireless condition monitor as train traction system monitor.

Studies have shown that early- and adult-onset schizophrenia patients differ in pre-morbid traits, illness presentation, psychopathology, and prognosis. We aimed to compare adult-onset patients (age range 26–55 years) with an adolescent-onset cohort (15–25 years) in demographics, illness presentation and functioning at baseline. Participants were from two territory-wide early intervention services for adolescent-onset ( n =671) and adult-onset psychosis patients ( n =360) in Hong Kong. The adolescent-onset cohort had their initial psychotic episode from 2001–2003; retrospective data collection was done through systematic case note review. The adult-onset cohort was recruited for a larger interventional study from 2009–2011; information was collected via face-to-face interviews. Adult-onset psychosis was significantly associated with more females, fewer smokers, more non-local birth, more full-time employment, better functioning, poorer medication adherence, more psychiatric hospitalization and fewer with schizophrenia than adolescent-onset psychosis (mean age: 20.4). The effect sizes were small, except for medication adherence where a robust effect was found. No group difference in DUP was found. The finding that adult-onset patients had better functioning challenges the view that adolescent- and adult-onset psychoses share a similar prognostic trajectory. Implications for adapting intervention processes for adolescent- and adult-onset psychosis are discussed.

Aim Gender-specific treatment strategies for psychosis have been suggested in recent years. Data on gender difference were largely consistent regarding premorbid functioning, age of onset and negative symptoms; however, results regarding neurocognitive function and duration of untreated psychosis were mixed and inconclusive. In this study, we aimed at a thorough examination on the gender differences in 360 Chinese patients with first-episode psychosis in Hong Kong. Methods From June 2009 to August 2011, participants were consecutively recruited from a population-based territory-wide study of early psychosis targeting first-episode psychosis in Hong Kong. Comprehensive data on basic demographics, premorbid functioning and schizoid and schizotypal traits, clinical, functioning, medication side effects and a battery of neurocognitive measures were collected upon entry into the service. Results In 360 patients with first-episode psychosis aged between 26 and 55 years, 43.6% (n = 157) were male and 56.4% (n = 203) were female. Males had poorer premorbid functioning and adjustment, earlier age of onset, more negative symptoms and poorer functioning in terms of work productivity, independent living and immediate social network relationships at presentation of first-episode psychosis. Interestingly, our data indicate that males tend to be more educated, and also characterized by higher IQ, better neurocognitive performance on visual domain compared with females. Duration of untreated psychosis was not different between the two genders. Conclusion Data from this homogeneous cohort of Chinese populations enabled tailored and culturally sensitive recommendation on gender-specific treatment strategies, hence improving patients' care and facilitate better diagnostic and interventional decisions for patients with psychosis.

In present work, La0.6Sr0.4CoO3 (LSCO)-buffered 0.7Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.3PbTiO3 (PMNT) thin film was grown on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate by using pulsed laser deposition. The introduction of the conductive LSCO layer can effectively depress the formation of pyrochlore phase and improve the crystallization quality of perovskite PMNT thin film ascribed to the similar crystal structure and lattice constant. Enhanced ferroelectric and dielectric properties were obtained with the saturated polarization Ps of ∼44 μC/cm2, remanent polarization Pr of ∼16.5 μC/cm2, dielectric constant e 33 T / e 0 of ∼2833 at 1 kHz, and dielectric tunability of 67% under ∼10 kV/mm. All these make it a potential candidate for MEMS devices.

In this letter, the airfoil-based electromagnetic energy harvester containing parallel array motion between moving coil and trajectory matching multi-pole magnets was investigated. The magnets were aligned in an alternatively magnetized formation of 6 magnets to explore enhanced power density. In particular, the magnet array was positioned in parallel to the trajectory of the tip coil within its tip deflection span. The finite element simulations of the magnetic flux density and induced voltages at an open circuit condition were studied to find the maximum number of alternatively magnetized magnets that was required for the proposed energy harvester. Experimental results showed that the energy harvester with a pair of 6 alternatively magnetized linear magnet arrays was able to generate an induced voltage (Vo) of 20 V, with an open circuit condition, and 475 mW, under a 30 Ω optimal resistance load operating with the wind speed (U) at 7 m/s and a natural bending frequency of 3.54 Hz. Compared to the traditional electromagnetic energy harvester with a single magnet moving through a coil, the proposed energy harvester, containing multi-pole magnets and parallel array motion, enables the moving coil to accumulate a stronger magnetic flux in each period of the swinging motion. In addition to the comparison made with the airfoil-based piezoelectric energy harvester of the same size, our proposed electromagnetic energy harvester generates 11 times more power output, which is more suitable for high-power-density energy harvesting applications at regions with low environmental frequency.

Different (1–3) heterostructures, such as BiFeO3-CoFe2O4 and BiFeO3-CuFe2O4 on Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.74Ti0.26O3 (PMN-26PT), were selected for study as possible materials for magnetoelectric (ME) random access memory. The (1–3) heterostructures were deposited, and multimagnetic states were found under different E-field (E) conditions. Upon removal of E, two possible remnant magnetization states remained stable. If an H-field (H) was also applied, two additional stable remnant magnetization states were found. Our investigations demonstrate (1–3) heterostructures with nonvolatility even though the individual phases/substrates had only volatile properties. This simplifies materials selection for multistate systems based on these heterostructures, averting difficulties with compositional nonuniformity and property repeatability, in particular, with regard to PMN-xPT crystal substrates. With such N≥4 magnetic state systems, a multilevel-cell memory device could readily be built with high ME coupling and numerous accessible magnetic states.

Aims Metabolic dysregulation may disrupt the complex neuroprotective mechanisms essential for brain health. Recent studies have pointed out the possible aetiological role of metabolic dysregulation in the onset of schizophrenia and the associated cognitive impairment. In this paper, we aimed to generate a theoretical model of how a combination of physical exercise and dietary glucose supplement may help to alleviate cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Methods Literature on metabolic dysregulation, especially insulin resistance, in relation to the onset of schizophrenia and the associated cognitive impairment is reviewed. The cognitive enhancement effects of physical exercise and dietary glucose supplement are then summarised. Finally, we propose a theoretical model based on the concerted effects of physical exercise and glucose supplement. Results In general, the joint action of physical exercise and dietary glucose supplement could up-regulate glucose and insulin transport into the brain, as well as augmenting the release of insulin growth factor-1 and brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Physical exercise and glucose supplement could enhance energy supply and neuroplasticity in brain, subsequently leading to potential cognitive enhancement in schizophrenia. However, glucose supplement is not suitable for patients with abnormal metabolic profile. Conclusions The combination of physical exercise and glucose supplement has potential therapeutic values in treating cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Further research is necessary to investigate the optimal patterns of exercise and doses of glucose for treating cognitive impairment in schizophrenia.

Mn-doped (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-BaTiO3 (BNBMT) thin film with the composition near the morphotropic phase boundary was grown on (La0.6Sr0.4)CoO3-electroded SrTiO3 single-crystal substrate by using pulsed laser deposition method. Ascribed to the crystal structure and lattice similarity, (100)-oriented BNBMT film with pure single-phase perovskite structure was obtained through carefully controlling the growth conditions. Enhanced ferroelectric and dielectric properties were obtained with large remanent polarization P r of ∼21 μC/cm2, coercive field E c of ∼7.4 kV/mm and dielectric constant $\varepsilon_{33}^{T}/\varepsilon_{0}$ of ∼750 at 1 kHz. The excellent global electrical properties of the BNBMT film are promising for environmentally friendly ferroelectric devices.

Mn-doped Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–BaTiO3 thin film with the composition around the morphotropic phase boundary was grown on Pt-electrodized Si substrate by pulsed laser deposition. Highly (1 0 0)-oriented film with pure perovskite structure was obtained through carefully controlling the growth conditions. Well-defined ferroelectric P–E loop was obtained with the average remnant polarization Pr and coercive field Ec of ∼11.3 μC/cm2 and ∼6.5 kV/mm, respectively. Polycrystalline structures and multidomain states were revealed by piezoresponse force microscopy and large local strain response was obtained with the normalized strain Smax/Emax up to 92 pm/V. The excellent global electrical properties make it quite promising in environmental-friendly ferroelectric and piezoelectric devices.

Aim Understanding factors that contribute to treatment delay would inform early detection and intervention strategies in psychotic disorders. However, existing data were mixed and primarily conducted among early-onset young patients. We examined duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) and its clinical and sociodemographic correlates in a large cohort of adult-onset patients with psychosis. Methods A total of 360 patients with first-onset psychosis aged 26–55 years were recruited consecutively as part of a controlled study of an early psychosis intervention service in Hong Kong Chinese. Demographic, sociodemographic and clinical characteristics relating to DUP were assessed within 4 months of onset. Results The population had a mean onset age of 36.6 years (SD = 8.7). The mean and median DUP were 515 days (SD = 1091) and 93 days (inter-quartile range from 20 to 382.3), respectively. Multivariate regression analysis suggested that insidious mode of onset, hospitalization, a diagnosis of schizophrenia, poorer insight and younger age at onset significantly prolonged DUP. DUP was not related to premorbid functioning, family involvement during help seeking and living alone. Conclusions The initial period of untreated psychosis is determined by multiple factors. Whether family involvement is considered a kind of social support in shortening or prolonging DUP needs further examination. Local early intervention program for psychosis should take reference from these findings when formulating personalized plans to reduce delay.

In order to take the full advantage of excellent beam-mode piezoelectric and acoustic properties of Pb(In 1/2 Nb 1/2 )O 3 –Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –PbTiO 3 (PIMNT) single crystal, PIMNT/epoxy 2-2 composite was designed and prepared with PIMNT volume percent of 69. Excellent properties for ultrasonic transducer applications were achieved, including ultrahigh thickness electromechanical coupling coefficient ( k t = 86%), large piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 = 1200 pC/N), and low acoustic impedance ( Z ~ 20 MRayls). Based on the improved properties, a 2 MHz PIMNT/epoxy 2-2 composite ultrasonic transducer was designed, fabricated, and its performance was compared with a PIMNT/epoxy 1-3 composite ultrasonic transducer and a PIMNT single-crystal ultrasonic transducer, respectively. The PIMNT/epoxy 2-2 composite ultrasonic transducer showed a significant enhancement in both relative pulse-echo sensitivity and −6 dB bandwidth, which were 4 dB higher and 20% broader than those of the PIMNT single-crystal ultrasonic transducer and as excellent as the PIMNT/epoxy 1-3 composite ultrasonic transducer. These promising results suggested the great potential for developing high-performance ultrasonic transducers using the PIMNT/epoxy 2-2 composite.

Background: Exposure to smoking-related cues leads to increased urge to smoke in regular cigarette smokers and resisting these urges requires considerable self-control. Purpose: Adopting a resource depletion model, two studies tested the hypothesis that resisting smoking urges depletes self-control resources. Methods: Adopting a within-participants randomized cross-over design, participants (study 1, N = 19; study 2, N = 32) were exposed to smoking-related (study 1: smoking images; study 2: cigarette cue-exposure task) and neutral (study 1: neutral images; study 2: drinking-straw task) cues with presentation order randomized. After each cue set, participants completed self-control tasks (study 1: handgrip task; study 2: handgrip and Stroop tasks), performance on which constituted dependent measures of self-control. Results: Self-control task performance was significantly impaired when exposed to smoking-related cues compared to neutral cues. No significant presentation-order effects, or interaction effects between stimulus and presentation order, were found. Conclusions: Findings corroborate our hypothesis that resisting smoking urges depletes cigarette smokers' self-control resources and suggests that self-control capacity is governed by a limited resource. © 2013 The Society of Behavioral Medicine.

Objective: Relapses in psychosis are costly and may have irreversible consequences. Relapse prevention is thus critical in the treatment of schizophrenia. Apart from medication discontinuation, a consistent relapse predictor has not been identified due to limitations in previous studies. We aim to investigate relapse predictors in a large cohort of patients with first-episode psychosis. Method: This is a retrospective cohort study designed to evaluate relapses in first-episode psychosis patients in 3 years. A total of 1400 patients’ case records were retrieved from a hospital database. Potential relapse predictors including demographic variables, baseline clinical measures, medication adherence, and residual positive symptoms upon clinical stabilization were collected. Results: The cumulative relapse rates were 19.3% by year 1, 38.4% by year 2, and 48.1% by year 3. Multivariate Cox-proportional hazards regression analysis revealed that medication non-adherence, smoking, schizophrenia diagnosis, younger age, and shorter baseline hospitalization were associated with an increased risk of relapse in 3 years. Conclusions: Nearly half of patients relapsed after 3 years following their first-episode psychosis. Smoking as a predictor of relapse is an intriguing new finding supportive of a link between nicotinic receptors and the dopamine system. Their relationship deserves further investigations with potential clinical implications for relapse prevention.

In order to improve the flexibility of Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3–Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbTiO3 (PIMNT) single crystal and make full use of the ultrahigh piezoelectric property in focused ultrasonic transducers, PIMNT/epoxy 1-3 composite with a volume fraction of 60% was prepared by a modified dice-and-fill method. Excellent properties for ultrasonic transducer applications have been achieved, such as higher thickness electromechanical coupling coefficient (kt = 84%), lower acoustic impedance (Z = 19 MRayls), and moderate dielectric constant ( e 33 T / e 0 = 2040 ). Based on the improved flexibility of as-prepared PIMNT/epoxy 1-3 composite, a cylindrically shaped ultrasonic linear array has been designed, fabricated, and characterized. The cylindrically shaped ultrasonic linear array has achieved an ultra-broad bandwidth (−6 dB) of 128%, which is a significant improvement over the plane linear array. These promising results show that the PIMNT/epoxy 1-3 composite can be used to develop high-performance focused ultrasonic transducers.
