Abstract

We have fabricated Na_xCoO_2 thin films via lateral diffusion of sodium into Co_3O_4 (111) epitaxial films (reactive solid-phase epitaxy: Ref. 4). The environment of thermal diffusion is key to the control of the sodium content in thin films. From the results of x-ray diffraction and in-plane resistivity, the epitaxial growth and the sodium contents of these films were identified. The thermoelectric measurements show a large thermoelectric power similar to that observed in single crystals. The quasiparticle scattering rate is found to approach zero at low temperatures, consistent with the small residual resistivity, indicating high quality of the Na_xCoO_2 thin films., Comment: 16 pages. 4 figures. Abstract

The angular dependence of Néel wall resistance has been studied by measuring the in-plane magnetoresistances (MRs) of the centipedelike Permalloy (Py) structure, which consists of a central wire with numerous orthogonally bisecting finger wires. All Py wires were designed to have a single domain structure at remanence and high anisotropy by the geometric control. The remanent domain at the junction between the central and finger wires is determined by the anisotropy constants of both wires and hence, variable angles of Néel wall can be achieved. Using a simple resistance-in-series model in corporation with the anisotropic MR effect, the analyses of the longitudinal and transverse MRs of the centipedelike structure give the domain wall resistance. Our results show that the Néel wall resistance is about milliohm and decreases with decreasing the relative angle between two domains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

16. Magnetization reversal in single domain Permalloy wires probed by magnetotransport.

Abstract

We have measured the in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) of a series of submicron single domain Permalloy wires to study two important magnetization reversal modes, coherent rotation and curling. With the consideration of both micromagnetic configurations, the MR curve can be decomposed in a reversibly bell-shaped curve and an irreversibly V-shaped discontinuity in low field, respectively. The discontinuity jump occurs at a switching field characterizing the curling mode. The angular dependence of the switching field is well described by the theoretical prediction of Aharoni model under the consideration of the whole volume curling. Moreover, we found that the low angle switching field decreases with increasing wire width (decreasing the aspect ratio) as 1/width, consistent with the curling model for a long slender ellipsoid. 17. Comparative study of the circumferential and volumetric analysis between conventional casting and three-dimensional scanning methods for transtibial socket: A preliminary study.

Abstract

Transtibial prosthetic sockets can be fabricated either by the conventional way, which involve using plaster of Paris bandages for casting. This will include modifications through hand, scanning and digital imaging of software. The aim of this study is to determine the circumferential profiles and conduct a volumetric analysis of a conventional socket that has fabrication using biosculptor technology. In doing this, a male transtibial amputee, age 28 years old with stable health condition was studied, where circumferential measurements were taken at intervals of 1 cm from the distal end of the residual limb to the medial tibial plateau level. Furthermore, the interior volume of both sockets and residuum were determined directly using water displacement method. A comparative value for the calculation of volume was also carried out using engineering mathematical equations. From these measurements, a total surface bearing transtibial sockets was fabricated to compare the changes of circumferential values of both sockets. The finding shows a percentage of the difference between the volume of the residual limb and conventional sockets to be 6.09%, whereas the biosculptor fabrication socket was 7.84% using the water displacement method. A comparison of circumferential profiles and volumetric analysis findings on the contrary showed that socket fabricated using the biosculptor technology is interchangeable with the conventional socket with more advantages, where biosculptor technology produces cheaper sockets and faster process with digital function in the procedure, unlike the conventional manual technique. Abstract

The magnetic structure of a magnetic dot depends on its geometrical factors such as thickness and dot size and can be either a multidomain state or a vortex state. The magnetoresistance (MR) of a series of magnetic dots with diameters ranging from 0.3 to 5 μm was measured to investigate the correlation between domain-structure and magnetotransport properties. A dot with a diameter of less than 2 μm has a domain of vortex state at remanence and demonstrates similar reversible MR results. Moreover, the behaviors of MR show clear changes corresponding to the domain-structure change from vortex to multidomain states with an increasing dot diameter. Data can be qualitatively described by the anisotropic magnetoresistive effect. Hence, our results show that the magnetotransport can be a tool to detect the magnetic domain structure of a submicron magnetic dot. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
