A fuzzy optimization strategy for a four-fin radiative fin array system meets the conflicting aims of minimizing both the fin mass and horizontal fin dimension, and provides a fuzzy feasible domain by using fuzzy objectives and constraints. The optimization results demonstrate the superiority of the four-fin array system over the traditional two-fin array system in effecting considerable reduction in the fin material. The configurations examined include fin arrays with vertical rectangular/triangular fin profile and horizontal fins restricted to the rectangular fin shape.

Numerical simulation of fluid flow and heat transfer during the cooling of electronic modules mounted on printed circuit boards are performed to examine the feasibility of a proposed double layer design. Conjugate solution of the two-dimensional energy equation is obtained for the incompressible flow over a number of uniformly heated blocks and the double layer board. Enhancement in heat convected from the modules along with the drop in maximum temperature of each module, obtained without increase in pressure head loss, characterizes the cooling improvement by the proposed design. Systematic calculations also provide sufficient data of the flow and temperature distributions for analyzing the cooling mechanism.

A study was conducted as an extension of studies on the solidification of flowing liquid in a pipe. The current study considers the radiation effect and process window for both radiation and forced convection cases on the pipe's outside. Results show that the development of a first-order logarithmic profile serves as a viable approximation for a cylindrical geometry in the solidified layer.
