Soil moisture plays a crucial role in understanding the hydrological cycle and the ecological environment. This research presents an improved change detection method that leverages time series data from Sentinel-1 radar and Sentinel-2 optical sensors (2019–2021) to estimate surface soil moisture. The response of backscatter to soil moisture in bare soil was expressed in a logarithmic form, and the influence function of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) on the backscatter difference was established for various vegetation-covered surfaces. Therefore, the impact of vegetation on backscatter is effectively mitigated, and the resulting change in backscatter relative to bare soil conditions can be obtained. An empirical function is subsequently formulated to ascertain the reference values of soil moisture in each pixel. The retrieval of soil moisture is demonstrated in the Wudaoliang permafrost region of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and validated against ground measurements. The retrieval results of the improved change detection method exhibit correlation coefficients ranging from 0.672 to 0.941, with root mean squared errors (RMSE) ranging from 0.031 [Formula: see text] to 0.073 [Formula: see text]. Compared to the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) 9-km product, our new method demonstrates higher correlation (0.898 vs. 0.867) and lower RMSE (0.037 [Formula: see text] vs. 0.044[Formula: see text]). The soil moisture retrieved from Sentinel shows a strong correlation with the SMAP 9-km soil moisture in the time series, thereby providing a better representation of the region’s soil moisture heterogeneity. Our method demonstrates the feasibility of combining Sentinel-1 and 2 for high-resolution (100 m) soil moisture mapping in permafrost regions.

Validating the satellite soil moisture products is always an active research topic for the application of the products and improvement of the retrieval algorithms, attracting extensive attention. Nevertheless, seldom existing validation activities focus on the validation of high-resolution soil moisture products at the fine scale. To this end, an experiment was conducted in the middle stream of the Heihe River Basin in northwestern China in August to October of 2021, aiming to validate high-resolution satellite remote sensing products of soil moisture. The paper introduces the design, composite, and preliminary results of the experiment. A soil moisture observation network was established with two kinds of sensors (CS616 and Stevens Hydra Probe) validated against soil core measurements. Several synchronized campaigns were performed, and data were collected to validate the SMAP/Sentinel-1 L2 Radiometer/Radar 30-Second Scene 3 and 1 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture (SPL2SMAP_S) products. Besides, an optical trapezoid model (OPTRAM) and collected Sentinel-2 data were applied to estimate soil moisture and to map irrigated area. Preliminary analyses show that: 1) Steven probes perform best, with an RMSE = 0.040 m3m−3 and ubRMSE=0.034 m3m−3; 2) Both the SPL2SMAP_S products at 3 km and 1 km show large RMSE (0.128 m3m−3 for 3 km and 0.158 m3m−3 for 1 km) and ubRMSE (0.115 m3m−3 for 3 km and 0.158 m3m−3 for 1 km); 3) The OPTRAM retrievals over bare surface present relatively smaller RMSE (0.06 m3m−3) and ubRMSE (0.057 m3m−3), while retrievals over vegetated croplands present a relatively large RMSE/ubRMSE (0.083/0.083 m3m−3), and the retrievals can identify the irrigated area at field scale. Overall, the experiment provides fruitful methodologies and datasets for the validation of high-resolution remote sensing products, benefiting the development and improvement of soil moisture retrieval algorithms and products to support irrigation scheduling and management at a precision agricultural scale in the future.

The ability to accurately forecast the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is of great importance to the resumption of societal normality. Existing methods of epidemic forecasting often ignore the comprehensive analysis of multiple epidemic prevention measures. This paper aims to analyze various epidemic prevention measures through a compound framework. Here, a susceptible-vaccinated-infected-recovered-deceased (SVIRD) model is constructed to consider the effects of population mobility among origin and destination, vaccination, and positive retest populations. And we further use real-time observations to correct the model trajectory with the help of data assimilation. Seven prevention measures are used to analyze the short-term trend of active cases. The results of the synthetic scene recommended that four measures—improving the vaccination protection rate (IVPR), reducing the number of contacts per person per day (RNCP), selecting the region with less infected people as origin A (SES-O) and limiting population flow entering from A to B per day (LAIP-OD)—are the most effective in the short-term, with maximum reductions of 75%, 53%, 35% and 31%, respectively, in active cases after 150 days. The results of the real-world experiment with Hong Kong as the origin and Shenzhen as the destination indicate that when the daily vaccination rate increased from 5% to 9.5%, the number of active cases decreased by only 7.35%. The results demonstrate that reducing the number of contacts per person per day after productive life resumes is more effective than increasing vaccination rates.

Marine biofouling caused huge economic losses of maritime industries. We aim to develop high-efficient, less-toxic, and cost-effective antifoulants to solve the problems of biofouling. In this study, we described the antifouling compounds albofungin and its derivatives (albofungin A, chrestoxanthone A, and chloroalbofungin) isolated from the metabolites of bacterium Streptomyces chrestomyceticus BCC 24770, the construction of high-yield strains for albofungin production, and application of albofungin-based antifouling coatings. Results showed that these albofungins have potent antibiofilm activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and anti-macrofouling activities against larval settlement of major fouling organisms with low cytotoxicity. With the best antifouling activity and highest yield in bacterial culture, albofungin was subsequently incorporated with hydrolyzable and degradable copolymer to form antifouling coatings, which altered biofilm structures and prevented the settlement of macrofouling organisms in marine environments. Our results suggested that albofungins were promising antifouling compounds with potential application in marine environments.

Abstract Hard yet flexible coatings with multi‐functionalities are useful for foldable displays and marine industries but rare. In this study, a highly cross‐linked multifunctional hybrid coating with ceramic‐like hardness and polymer‐like flexibility is reported. The coating is prepared via a step‐by‐step strategy, where two types of epoxy‐oligosiloxane nanoclusters are first synthesized by sol‐gel chemistry, and amine‐terminated curing agents are used to cross‐link them at room temperature. The coating is highly transparent (>92% transmittance), hard (6‐7H), and flexible (10 mm bending diameter) because of the unique combination of siloxane nanoclusters and polymer networks. Meanwhile, since the coating contains fouling‐resistant telomer and low‐surface‐tension liquid lubricant polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), it exhibits excellent anti‐biofouling and self‐cleaning properties. The results indicate that the mechanical and antifouling properties of the coating can be easily tuned and prove that the step‐by‐step strategy is a promising and universal method. The novel coatings can meet the needs of applications in foldable displays, marine industries, and other fields.

Summary: Superhydrophobic coatings have tremendous potential for protecting porous structures from corrosion. However, the weak adhesion and poor abrasion resistance have long been challenges for their real-life applications. Inspired by tree roots, we prepared a robust superhydrophobic coating by spraying fluorinated nanodiamonds (FNDs) on a permeable epoxy coating. The epoxy can not only coat the surface but also permeate deeply inside a porous substrate and consolidate in situ as tree roots in soil. Thus, the structure is thoroughly reinforced where the pull-off strength reaches 9.4 MPa for concrete. On the other hand, the surface is covered with immobilized FNDs, forming a superhydrophobic surface. Thanks to the ultra-hard FNDs, the coating surface has high abrasion resistance and its superhydrophobicity holds even after 100 abrasion cycles. Moreover, it exhibits self-cleaning, anti-icing, and anticorrosion performance. It is promising in protecting various porous structures such as concrete, wood, and untreated corroded steel.

Abstract To better leverage the accumulated bioactivity data in the ChEMBL database, we have developed Bioactivity-explorer, a web application for interactive visualization and exploration of the large-scale bioactivity data in ChEMBL. Mining and integration of the Therapeutic Target Database disease-target mapping into the ChEMBL database has enabled Bioactivity-explorer to include 493,430 scaffolds, 31,400,000 matched molecular pairs, 1330,220 target–target interactions in terms of shared active compounds, 4526,718 target–target interactions in terms of shared active scaffolds, 97,041,700 molecule–molecule interactions and 14,974 disease-target mappings. Soil moisture is one of the core hydrological and climate variables that crucially influences water and energy budgets. The spatial resolution of available soil moisture products is generally coarser than 25 km, which limits their hydro-meteorological and eco-hydrological applications and the management of water resources at watershed and agricultural scales. A feasible solution to overcome these limitations is to downscale coarse soil moisture products with the support of higher-resolution spatial information. Although many auxiliary variables have been used for this purpose, few studies have analyzed their applicability and effectiveness in arid regions. To this end, we comprehensively evaluated four commonly used auxiliary variables, including NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), LST (Land Surface Temperature), TVDI (Temperature Vegetation Dryness Index), and SEE (Soil Evaporative Efficiency), against ground-based soil moisture observations during the vegetation growing season in the Heihe River Basin, China. Performance metrics indicated that SEE is most sensitive (R2 ≥ 0.67) to soil moisture because it is controlled by soil evaporation limited by the available soil moisture. The similarity of spatial patterns also showed that SEE best captures soil moisture changes, with the STD (standard deviation) of the HD (Hausdorff Distance) less than 0.058 when compared with PLMR (Polarimetric L-band Multi-beam Radiometer) soil moisture products. In addition, soil moisture was mapped by RF (Random Forests) using both single auxiliary variables and 11 types of multiple auxiliary variable combinations. SEE was found to be the best auxiliary variable for scaling and mapping soil moisture with accuracy of 0.035 cm3/cm3. Among the multiple auxiliary variables, the combination of LST, NDVI, and SEE was found to best enhance the scaling and mapping accuracy of soil moisture with 0.034 cm3/cm3.

In this study, the effects of temperature, shear stress, and coating quantity of waterproof adhesive layer on the shear fatigue performance of a steel bridge deck pavement were investigated. Direct shear fatigue tests of a pavement comprising an epoxy resin waterproof adhesive layer with stone matrix asphalt were conducted at different temperatures, stress levels, and coating quantities. The results show that temperature and stress have significant effects on the shear fatigue life. With increasing temperature and stress, the shear fatigue life of the waterproof adhesive layer decreased gradually. Therefore, for steel bridge deck pavements under high temperatures and heavy loads, the use of asphalt waterproof adhesive layers or pavement layers should be evaluated carefully while limiting the traffic of heavily loaded vehicles. Shear failure occurs at the waterproof adhesive layer–pavement interface and not at the steel–waterproof adhesive layer interface. The shear strength of the epoxy resin waterproof adhesive layer is mainly provided by the bond strength between the waterproof adhesive and pavement mixture as well as the interlocking force between the cured epoxy resin and the bottom interface of uneven pavement mixture. The shear strength increases with the coating quantity of the waterproof adhesive layer; however, after reaching the maximum value, the shear strength becomes stable. In contrast, the interlaminar shear fatigue life increases continuously with the coating quantity of the waterproof adhesive layer. Appropriately increasing the coating quantity is beneficial for improving the resistance of the waterproof adhesive layer to interlaminar shear fatigue failure.

Capturing and identifying field-based agricultural activities, such as the start, duration and end of irrigation, together with crop sowing/germination, growing period and time of harvest, offer informative metrics that can assist in precision agricultural activities in addition to broader water and food security monitoring efforts. While optically based band-ratios, such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and normalized difference water index (NDWI), have been used as descriptors for monitoring crop dynamics, data are not always available due to the influence of clouds and other atmospheric effects on optical sensors. Satellite-based microwave systems, such as the synthetic aperture radar (SAR), offer an all-weather advantage in monitoring soil and crop conditions. In this paper, we leverage the relative strengths of both optical- and microwave-based approaches by combining high resolution Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 optical imagery to monitor irrigation events and crop dynamics in a dryland agricultural landscape. A microwave backscatter model was used to analyze the responses of simulated backscatters to soil moisture, NDVI and NDWI (both are correlated with vegetation water content and can be regarded as vegetation descriptors), allowing an empirical relationship between these two platforms. A correlation analysis was also performed using Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 optical data over crops of maize, alfalfa, carrot and Rhodes grass in Al Kharj farm of Saudi Arabia to identify an appropriate SAR-based vegetation descriptor. The results illustrate the relationship between SAR and both NDVI and NDWI and demonstrated the relationship between the cross-polarization ratio (VH/VV) and the two optical indices. We explore the capacity of this multi-platform and multi-sensor approach to inform on the spatio-temporal dynamics of a range of agricultural activities, which can be used to facilitate field-based management decisions.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history of widespread clinical applications, especially in East Asia, and is becoming frequently used in Western countries. However, owing to extreme complicacy in both chemical ingredients and mechanism of action, a deep understanding of TCM is still difficult. To accelerate the modernization and popularization of TCM, a single comprehensive database is required, containing a wealth of TCM-related information and equipped with complete analytical tools. Here we present YaTCM (Yet another Traditional Chinese Medicine database), a free web-based toolkit, which provides comprehensive TCM information and is furnished with analysis tools. YaTCM allows a user to (1) identify the potential ingredients that are crucial to TCM herbs through similarity search and substructure search, (2) investigate the mechanism of action for TCM or prescription through pathway analysis and network pharmacology analysis, (3) predict potential targets for TCM molecules by multi-voting chemical similarity ensemble approach, and (4) explore functionally similar herb pairs. All these functions can lead to one systematic network for visualization of TCM recipes, herbs, ingredients, definite or putative protein targets, pathways, and diseases. This web service would help in uncovering the mechanism of action of TCM, revealing the essence of TCM theory and then promoting the drug discovery process. This project explored the integrated use of satellite, ground observations and hydrological distributed models to support water resources assessment and monitoring in High Mountain Asia (HMA). Hydrological data products were generated taking advantage of the synergies of European and Chinese data assets and space-borne observation systems. Energy-budget-based glacier mass balance and hydrological models driven by satellite observations were developed. These models can be applied to describe glacier-melt contribution to river flow. Satellite hydrological data products were used for forcing, calibration, validation and data assimilation in distributed river basin models. A pilot study was carried out on the Red River basin. Multiple hydrological data products were generated using the data collected by Chinese satellites. A new Evapo-Transpiration (ET) dataset from 2000 to 2018 was generated, including plant transpiration, soil evaporation, rainfall interception loss, snow/ice sublimation and open water evaporation. Higher resolution data were used to characterize glaciers and their response to environmental forcing. These studies focused on the Parlung Zangbo Basin, where glacier facies were mapped with GaoFeng (GF), Sentinal-2/Multi-Spectral Imager (S2/MSI) and Landsat8/Operational Land Imager (L8/OLI) data. The geodetic mass balance was estimated between 2000 and 2017 with Zi-Yuan (ZY)-3 Stereo Images and the SRTM DEM. Surface velocity was studied with Landsat5/Thematic Mapper (L5/TM), L8/OLI and S2/MSI data over the period 2013–2019. An updated method was developed to improve the retrieval of glacier albedo by correcting glacier reflectance for anisotropy, and a new dataset on glacier albedo was generated for the period 2001–2020. A detailed glacier energy and mass balance model was developed with the support of field experiments at the Parlung No. 4 Glacier and the 24 K Glacier, both in the Tibetan Plateau. Besides meteorological measurements, the field experiments included glaciological and hydrological measurements. The energy balance model was formulated in terms of enthalpy for easier treatment of water phase transitions. The model was applied to assess the spatial variability in glacier melt. In the Parlung No. 4 Glacier, the accumulated glacier melt was between 1.5 and 2.5 m w.e. in the accumulation zone and between 4.5 and 6.0 m w.e. in the ablation zone, reaching 6.5 m w.e. at the terminus. The seasonality in the glacier mass balance was observed by combining intensive field campaigns with continuous automatic observations. The linkage of the glacier and snowpack mass balance with water resources in a river basin was analyzed in the Chiese (Italy) and Heihe (China) basins by developing and applying integrated hydrological models using satellite retrievals in multiple ways. The model FEST-WEB was calibrated using retrievals of Land Surface Temperature (LST) to map soil hydrological properties. A watershed model was developed by coupling ecohydrological and socioeconomic systems. Integrated modeling is supported by an updated and parallelized data assimilation system. The latter exploits retrievals of brightness temperature (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer, AMSR), LST (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer, MODIS), precipitation (Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and FengYun (FY)-2D) and in-situ measurements. In the case study on the Red River Basin, a new algorithm has been applied to disaggregate the SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) soil moisture retrievals by making use of the correlation between evaporative fraction and soil moisture.

The release of high-spatiotemporal-resolution Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to the public has provided an unprecedented opportunity to map soil moisture at watershed and agricultural field scales. However, the existing retrieval algorithms fail to derive soil moisture with expected accuracy. Insufficient understanding of the effects of soil and vegetation parameters on the backscatters is an important reason for this failure. To this end, we present a Sensitivity Analysis (SA) to quantify the effects of parameters on the dual-polarized backscatters of Sentinel-1 based on a Water Cloud Model (WCM) and multiple global SA methods. The identification of the incidence angle and polarization of Sentinel-1 and the description scheme of vegetation parameters (A, B and α) in WCM are especially emphasized in this analysis towards an optimal estimation of parameters. Multiple SA methods derive identical parameter importance ranks, indicating that a highly reasonable and reliable SA is performed. Comparison between two existing vegetation description schemes shows that the scheme using Vegetation Water Content (VWC) outperforms the scheme combing particle moisture content and VWC. Surface roughness, soil moisture, VWC, and B, are most sensitive on the backscatters. Variation of parameter sensitivity indices with incidence angle at different polarizations indicates that VV- and VH- polarized backscatters at small incidence angles are the optimal options for soil moisture and surface roughness estimation, respectively, while VV-polarized backscatter at larger incidence angles is well-suited for VWC and B estimation and HH-polarized backscatter is well suited for roughness estimation. This analysis improves the understanding of the effects of vegetated surface parameters on multi-angle and multi-polarized backscatters of Sentinel-1 SAR, informing improvement in SAR-based soil moisture retrieval.

Butenolide derivatives have the potential to be effective and environmentally friendly antifouling agents. In the present study, a butenolide derivative was structurally modified into Boc-butenolide to increase its melting point and remove its foul smell. The structurally modified Boc-butenolide demonstrated similar antifouling capabilities to butenolide in larval settlement bioassays but with significantly lower toxicity at high concentrations. Release-rate measurements demonstrated that the antifouling compound Boc-butenolide could be released from polycaprolactone-polyurethane (PCL-PU)-based coatings to inhibit the attachment of foulers. The coating matrix was easily degraded in the marine environment. The performance of the Boc-butenolide antifouling coatings was further examined through a marine field test. The coverage of biofouler on the Boc-butenolide coatings was low after 2 months, indicating the antifouling potential of Boc-butenolide.

Estimating soil moisture based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data remains challenging due to the influences of vegetation and surface roughness. Here we present an algorithm that simultaneously retrieves soil moisture, surface roughness and vegetation water content by jointly using high-resolution Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery, with an application directed towards the provision of information at the precision agricultural scale. Sentinel-2-derived vegetation water indices are investigated and used to quantify the backscatter resulting from the vegetation canopy. The proposed algorithm then inverts the water cloud model to simultaneously estimate soil moisture and surface roughness by minimizing a cost function constructed by model simulations and SAR observations. To examine the performance of VV- and VH-polarized backscatters on soil moisture retrievals, three retrieval schemes are explored: a single channel algorithm using VV (SCA-VV) and VH (SCA-VH) polarizations and a dual channel algorithm using both VV and VH polarizations (DCA-VVVH). An evaluation of the approach using a combination of a cosmic-ray soil moisture observing system (COSMOS) and Soil Climate Analysis Network measurements over Nebraska shows that the SCA-VV scheme yields good agreement at both the COSMOS footprint and single-site scales. The features of the algorithms that have the most impact on the retrieval accuracy include the vegetation water content estimation scheme, parameters of the water cloud model and the specification of initial ranges of soil moisture and roughness, all of which are comprehensively analyzed and discussed. Through careful consideration and selection of these factors, we demonstrate that the proposed SCA-VV approach can provide reasonable soil moisture retrievals, with RMSE ranging from 0.039 to 0.078 m3/m3 and R2 ranging from 0.472 to 0.665, highlighting the utility of SAR for application at the precision agricultural scale.

Soil moisture and salinity are crucial parameters of the Earth’s ecosystem; how to understand the radiation properties of them is of great significance for remote sensing monitoring. In this study, the application of mixed soil dielectric models (Dobson and generalized refractive mixing dielectric model (GRMDM)) and saline soil dielectric models (Dobson-S, HQR (Qingrong Hu), and WYR (Yueru Wu)) were analyzed to select the optimal models to simulate brightness temperature based on observational data. The brightness temperature of the soil moisture and multilevel salinity was simulated by using the Q-H (parameter of polarization mixing and parameter of characterizing height) model and Holmes parameterization scheme of soil effective temperature. The results show that both the Dobson model and the GRMDM model can well reproduce the real part and imaginary part of the dielectric constant of non-saline soil, and the GRMDM model was better. With the increase of the frequency, the simulation error of the dielectric constant of the saline soil by using the Dobson-S model, HQR model, and WYR model also increased, and the simulation result of the WYR model was better in the L band. The simulated result of the brightness temperature of soil moisture between the observation value and simulation value presented a high correlation both in the horizontal polarization and vertical polarization, with R greater than 0.967 and 0.948, and the root mean square error smaller than 3.998 K and 2.766 K, respectively. Meanwhile, the correlation coefficients of the brightness temperature of the saline soil in the horizontal polarization and vertical polarization were 0.935 and 0.971, and the root mean square errors were 5.808 K and 4.65 K, respectively. The brightness temperature decreased as the soil salinity increased, and the higher the salinity content was, the quicker the brightness temperature decreased. We expect that the experimental results can be used as a reference for algorithm developers to further enhance the accuracy of soil moisture and soil salinity retrievals.

Remotely sensed thermal inertia method has been recognized as a promising approach for land surface soil moisture retrieval from the early 1970's. In order to estimate the land surface soil moisture in arid regions, a real thermal inertia (RTI) model was formulated based on the heat conduction equation and an approximated energy budget equation at the land surface using the land surface temperature and reflectance measured by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The soil thermal inertia of Heihe River Basin (HRB) was retrieved based on the RTI model. Furthermore, using a thermal inertia-soil moisture model along with auxiliary data such as soil texture and bulk density, land surface soil moisture was estimated. The results were verified experimentally using the observations made at three automatic weather stations (AWS). The coefficient of the correlation between the retrieved values of soil thermal inertia and measured ones was with above R=0.6 and the root mean square error of soil moisture was 0.072 m3m-3. The soil moisture in the HRB exhibits a seasonal variation with higher values in summer and autumn and lower values in winter and spring, and also exhibits considerable spatial variation with higher values in the upstream district and lower values in the downstream district.

The colonization of marine microorganisms, animals and plants on underwater surface forms marine biofouling. It has profound effects on marine industries. To solve the problem, we proposed a strategy of Dynamic Surface Antifouling (DSAF), i.e., continuously changing surfaces can effectively inhibit biofouling organisms landing and adhering, and developed degradable polymer based marine antifouling material. The degradation of polymer chain enables the surface dynamic or self-renewing even on static conditions. The final degradation products of these polymers are low molecular weight molecules, and do not produce marine microplastics. Meanwhile, the degradable polymers act as carriers and controlled release systems for antifoulants, further improving the antifouling efficiency.
