Abstract Purpose This study aimed to verify that aerosolization ocular surface microorganisms (AOSMs) accumulated during non-contact tonometry (NCT) measurements. Methods A total of 508 participants (740 eyes) were enrolled in the study. In Experiment 1, before NCT was performed on each eye, the air was disinfected, and environment air control samples were collected via Air ideal® 3P (Bio Merieux). During NCT measurements, microbial aerosol samples were collected once from each eye. In Experiment 2, we collected initial blank control samples and then repeated Experiment 1. Finally, in Experiment 3, after the background microbial aerosol investigation, we cumulatively sampled AOSMs from each 10 participants then culture once, without any interventions to interrupt the accumulation. The collected samples were incubated and identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). Results Pathogenic Aerococcus viridans and other microorganisms from human eyes can spread and accumulate in the air during NCT measurements. The species and quantity of AOSMs produced by NCT measurements can demonstrate an accumulation effect. Conclusion AOSMs generated during NCT measurements are highly likely to spread and accumulate in the air, thereby may increase the risk of exposure to and transmission of bio-aerosols.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), poses a significant threat to food security, necessitating effective management strategies. While chemical control remains a primary approach, understanding the toxicity and detoxification mechanisms of different insecticides is crucial. In this study, we conducted leaf-dipping bioassays to assess the toxicity of quinalphos and beta-cypermethrin·emamectin benzoate (β-cyp·EMB) on S. frugiperda larvae. Additionally, we assessed the response of alterations in CarE, GST, MFO, and AChE activities to sublethal concentrations of these insecticides over various treatment durations. Results indicated that β-cyp·EMB exhibited higher toxicity than quinalphos in S. frugiperda. Interestingly, the highest activities of GST, CarE, MFO, and AChE were observed at 6 h exposure to LC10 and LC25 of β-cyp·EMB, surpassing equivalent sublethal concentrations of quinalphos. Subsequently, GST and CarE activities exposure to β-cyp·EMB steadily decreased, while MFO and AChE activities exposure to both insecticides was initially decreased then increased. Conversely, two sublethal concentrations of quinalphos notably enhanced GST activity across all exposure durations, with significantly higher than β-cyp·EMB at 12–48 h. Similarly, CarE activity was also increased at various durations. Our research has exhibited significant alterations in enzyme activities exposure to both concentration and duration. Furthermore, Pearson correlation analysis showed significant correlations among these enzyme activities at different treatment durations. These findings contribute to a better understanding of detoxification mechanisms across different insecticides, providing valuable insights for the rational management of S. frugiperda populations.

ABSTRACT Osseointegrated dental implants replace missing teeth and create an artificial surface for biofilms of complex microbial communities to grow. These biofilms on implants and dental surfaces can trigger infection and inflammation in the surrounding tissue. This study investigated the microbial characteristics of peri-implant mucositis (PM) and explored the correlation between microbial ecological imbalance, community function, and disease severity by comparing the submucosal microflora from PM with those of healthy inter-subject implants and intra-subject gingivitis (G) within a group of 32 individuals. We analyzed submucosal plaques from PM, healthy implant (HI), and G sites using metagenome shotgun sequencing. The bacterial diversity of HIs was higher than that of PM, according to the Simpson index. Beta diversity revealed differences in taxonomic and functional compositions across the groups. Linear discriminant analysis of the effect size identified 15 genera and 37 species as biomarkers that distinguished PM from HIs. Pathways involving cell motility and protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum were upregulated in PM, while pathways related to the metabolism of cofactors and vitamins were downregulated. Microbial dysbiosis correlated positively with the severity of clinical inflammation measured by the sulcus bleeding index (SBI) in PM. Prevotella and protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum also correlated positively with the SBI. Our study revealed PM’s microbiological and functional traits and suggested the importance of certain functions in disease severity.IMPORTANCEPeri-implant mucositis is an early stage in the progression of peri-implantitis. The high prevalence of it has been a threat to the widespread use of implant prosthodontics. The link between the submucosal microbiome and peri-implant mucositis was demonstrated previously. Nevertheless, the taxonomic and functional composition of the peri-implant mucositis microbiome remains controversial. In this study, we comprehensively characterize the microbial signature of peri-implant mucositis and for the first time, we investigate the correlations between microbial dysbiosis, functional potential, and disease severity. With the help of metagenomic sequencing, we find the positive correlations between microbial dysbiosis, genus Prevotella, pathway of protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, and more severe mucosal bleeding in the peri-implant mucositis. Our studies offer insight into the pathogenesis of peri-implant mucositis by providing information on the relationships between community function and disease severity.

High-entropy effect is a novel design strategy to optimize properties and explore novel materials. In this work, (La1/5Nd1/5Sm1/5Ho1/5Y1/5)NbO4 (5RNO) high-entropy microwave dielectric ceramics were successfully prepared in the sintering temperature (S.T.) range of 1210–1290 ℃ via a solid-phase reaction route, and medium-entropy (La1/3Nd1/3Sm1/3)NbO4 and (La1/4Nd1/4Sm1/4Ho1/4)NbO4 (3RNO and 4RNO) ceramics were compared. The effects of the entropy (S) on crystal structure, phase transition, and dielectric performance were evaluated. The entropy increase yields a significant increase in a phase transition temperature (from monoclinic fergusonite to tetragonal scheelite structure). Optimal microwave dielectric properties were achieved in the high-entropy ceramics (5RNO) at the sintering temperature of 1270 ℃ for 4 h with a relative density of 98.2% and microwave dielectric properties of dielectric permittirity (εr) = 19.48, quality factor (Q×f) = 47,770 GHz, and resonant frequency temperature coefficient (τf) = –13.50 ppm/℃. This work opens an avenue for the exploration of novel microwave dielectric material and property optimization via entropy engineering.

The preparation of Pickering emulsions from nanoparticles commonly requires modification of the particles’ surface chemistry. Here, the authors demonstrate a chemical modifier-free approach for the preparation of long-term stable Pickering emulsions for SERS sensing and catalytic applications.

Purpose Glomerular mesangial cell (GMC) dysfunction plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Transient receptor potential canonical 6 (TRPC6) has been demonstrated to be involved in the development of DKD. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. The present study investigated the role of TRPC6 in GMC dysfunction and the related mechanism.Methods Diabetic rats and cultured GMCs were used in the experiment. The diabetic rat model was created by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. Protein and mRNA levels were assessed by Western blotting and quantitative RT–PCR, respectively. Histological changes in the kidneys were observed by immunochemistry and hematoxylin and eosin. TRPC6 knockdown was achieved by adenovirus-mediated TRPC6 shRNA delivery in vivo and TRPC6 siRNA transfection in vitro.Results TRPC6 expression was increased in diabetic rat kidneys. Knockdown of TRPC6 attenuated diabetes-induced kidney functional deterioration. In addition, the increases in extracellular matrix components, including collagen IV, collagen I, and fibronectin production, as well as NFAT2 expression were also suppressed. In cultured GMCs, high glucose (25 mM, HG) treatment increased the expression of TRPC6. Knockdown of TRPC6 alleviated HG-induced increases in collagen IV, fibronectin, and NFAT2 expression. Knockdown of NFAT2 also inhibited the upregulation of proteins, including collagen IV and fibronectin, in HG-treated GMCs.Conclusion These results demonstrate that inhibition of TRPC6/NFAT2 signaling attenuates GMC dysfunction and the development of DKD and suggest that pharmacological targeting of TRPC6/NFAT2 in GMCs may provide beneficial effects for DKD.

Abstract Objective To analyze the changes in the prevalence of myopia and its relation to ocular biological parameters, and behaviors among primary school students in China, and understand the prevention and control of myopia. Methods Cross-sectional surveys were performed on 7–9-year-old children in the yrs. 2012 and 2019. In addition, spherical equivalent refraction (SER), axial length (AL), and AL/corneal radius ratio (AL/CR ratio) were collected without cycloplegia. Participants completed detailed questionnaires on behavior related to myopia. Results Data was collected on 623 children (8.02 ± 0.57 years old) in 2012 and 536 students in 2019 (8.09 ± 0.65 years old). The prevalence of myopia was 37.7% in 2012 and 39.9% in 2019. The SER was -0.25 (0.92) D in 2012 and -0.25 (1.25) in 2019. There was no statistical difference in the prevalence of myopia and SER over the 7 years (all P > 0.05). In 2019, the prevalence of myopia among girls demonstrated an increasing trend (33.8% vs. 37.8%), but there was no statistical difference (P > 0.05). ObjectiveGut microbiota plays an important role in colorectal cancer (CRC) pathogenesis through microbes and their metabolites, while oral pathogens are the major components of CRC-associated microbes. Multiple studies have identified gut and fecal microbiome-derived biomarkers for precursors lesions of CRC detection. However, few studies have used salivary samples to predict colorectal polyps. Therefore, in order to find new noninvasive colorectal polyp biomarkers, we searched into the differences in fecal and salivary microbiota between patients with colorectal polyps and healthy controls.MethodsIn this case–control study, we collected salivary and fecal samples from 33 patients with colorectal polyps (CP) and 22 healthy controls (HC) between May 2021 and November 2022. All samples were sequenced using full-length 16S rRNA sequencing and compared with the Nucleotide Sequence Database. The salivary and fecal microbiota signature of colorectal polyps was established by alpha and beta diversity, Linear discriminant analysis Effect Size (LEfSe) and random forest model analysis. In addition, the possibility of microbiota in identifying colorectal polyps was assessed by Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC).ResultsIn comparison to the HC group, the CP group’s microbial diversity increased in saliva and decreased in feces (p 0.05). The principal coordinate analysis revealed significant differences in β-diversity of salivary and fecal microbiota between the CP and HC groups. Moreover, LEfSe analysis at the species level identified Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Leptotrichia wadei, Prevotella intermedia, and Megasphaera micronuciformis as the major contributors to the salivary microbiota, and Ruminococcus gnavus, Bacteroides ovatus, Parabacteroides distasonis, Citrobacter freundii, and Clostridium symbiosum to the fecal microbiota of patients with polyps. Salivary and fecal bacterial biomarkers showed Area Under ROC Curve of 0.8167 and 0.8051, respectively, which determined the potential of diagnostic markers in distinguishing patients with colorectal polyps from controls, and it increased to 0.8217 when salivary and fecal biomarkers were combined.ConclusionThe composition and diversity of the salivary and fecal microbiota were significantly different in colorectal polyp patients compared to healthy controls, with an increased abundance of harmful bacteria and a decreased abundance of beneficial bacteria. A promising non-invasive tool for the detection of colorectal polyps can be provided by potential biomarkers based on the microbiota of the saliva and feces.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a common agricultural pest known for its extensive migration and wide host ranges, causes considerable harm to maize (Zea mays L.). In this study, we utilized two molecular marker genes, COI and Tpi, to compare the genetic characteristics of the collected original samples. Additionally, through an interactive study between S. frugiperda larvae and six maize varieties aiming to understand the insect’s adaptability and resistance mechanisms, our analysis revealed that both the COI and Tpi genes identified S. frugiperda as the corn strain. Further examination of the larvae showed significant differences in nutritional indices, digestive, and detoxification enzyme activities. Special maize varieties were found to offer higher efficiency in nutrient conversion and assimilation compared with common varieties. This study revealed adaptations in S. frugiperda’s digestive and detoxification processes in response to the different maize varieties. For instance, larvae reared on common maize exhibited elevated amylase and lipase activities. Interestingly, detoxification enzyme activities exhibited different patterns of variation in different maize varieties. The Pearson correlation analysis between nutritional indices, enzyme activities, and the nutritional content and secondary metabolites of maize leaves provided deeper insights into the pest’s adaptability. The results highlighted significant relationships between specific nutritional components in maize and the physiological responses of S. frugiperda. Overall, our findings contribute substantially to the understanding of S. frugiperda’s host plant adaptability, offering critical insights for the development of sustainable pest management strategies.

Abstract Interactions between the decline of Mongolian pine woodlands and fungal communities and invasive pests in northeastern China are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the fungal communities occurring in three tree samples: the woodwasp Sirex noctilio infested, healthy uninfested and unhealthy uninfested Mongolian pine trees. We analyzed the relationships of the Mongolian pine decline with fungal infection and woodwasp infestation. Twenty-six fungal species were identified from the sampled trees. Each tree sample harbored a fungal endophyte community with a unique structure. Pathogenic fungi richness was four times higher in infested and unhealthy un-infested trees compared to that in healthy uninfested trees. Sphaeropsis sapinea was the most dominant pathogenic fungus in the sampled Mongolian pine trees. The number of S. noctilio was higher than native bark beetles in the declining Mongolian pine trees. The invasion of the woodwasp appeared to be promoted by the fungal infection in the Mongolian pine trees. The incidence of S. noctilio infestation was higher in the fungi infected trees (83.22%) than those without infection (38.72%). S. sapinea population exhibited positive associations with within-tree colonization of S. noctilio and bark beetle. Collectively, these data indicate that the fungal disease may have caused as the initial reason the decline of the Mongolian pine trees, and also provided convenient conditions for the successful colonization of the woodwasp. The woodwasps attack the Mongolian pine trees infected by fungi and accelerated its decline.

Insect chitinases play a crucial part to digest chitin in the exoskeleton during the molting process. However, research on insect chitinase related to the environmental stress response is very limited. This study was the first conducted to expression analysis of chitinase- related genes in A. pisum under abiotic stresses. Here, we identified five chitinase-like proteins (ApIDGF, ApCht3, ApCht7, ApCht10 and ApENGase), and clustered them into five groups (group II, III, V, Ⅹ, and ENGase). Developmental expression analysis revealed that the five A. pisum chitinase-related genes were expressed at whole developmental stages with different relative expression patterns. When aphids were exposed to various abiotic stresses including temperature, insecticide and the stress 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E), all five chitinase genes were differentially expressed in A. pisum. The results showed that insecticide such as imidacloprid down-regulated the expression of these five Cht-related genes. Analysis of temperature stress of A. pisum chitinase suggested that ApCht7 expression was high at 10°C, which demonstrates its important role in pea aphids under low temperature. Conversely, ApCht10 was more active under high temperature stress, as it was significantly up-regulated at 30°C. Besides, 20E enhanced ApCht3 and ApCht10 expression in A. pisum, but reduced ApCht7 expression. These findings provide basic information and insights for the study of the role of these genes under abiotic stress, which advances our knowledge in the management of pea aphids under multiple stresses.

Abstract Background To evaluate the impact of parental myopia and outdoor time on myopia among students in Wenzhou. Methods We examined 1388 primary students from first grade to third grade in Wenzhou from September 2012 to March 2015. We performed noncycloplegic refractometry on each student every six months and axial length (AL) measurements every year. At the commencement of our study, children were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding near work activity and outdoor activity, whereas parents were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire regarding their background circumstances and their history of myopia. Results A total of 1294 students (93.2%) returned for follow-up examinations. Children with initial and final no myopia spent more time on outdoor activities than those with new onset myopia (1.92 vs. 1.81 h/d, p = 0.022), and elongation of AL in children with a high level (> 2.5 h/day) of outdoor time (0.22 ± 0.13 mm/Y) was less than those with a low level (≤ 1.5 h/day) of outdoor time (0.24 ± 0.14 mm/Y, p = 0.045). Anoplophora glabripennis (Asian longhorned beetle) is a wood-boring pest that can inhabit a wide range of healthy deciduous host trees in native and invaded areas. The gut microbiota plays important roles in the acquisition of nutrients for the growth and development of A. glabripennis larvae. Herein, we investigated the larval gut structure and studied the lignocellulose activity and microbial communities of the larval gut following feeding on different host trees. The larval gut was divided into foregut, midgut, and hindgut, of which the midgut is the longest, forming a single loop under itself. Microbial community composition and lignocellulose activity in larval gut extracts were correlated with host tree species. A. glabripennis larvae fed on the preferred host (Populus gansuensis) had higher lignocellulose activity and microbial diversity than larvae reared on either a secondary host (Salix babylonica) or a resistant host (Populus alba var. pyramidalis). Wolbachia was the most dominant bacteria in the gut of larvae fed on S. babylonica and P. alba var. pyramidalis, while Enterococcus and Gibbsiella were the most dominant in larvae fed on P. gansuensis, followed by Wolbachia. The lignocellulose-degrading fungus Fusarium solani was dominant in the larval gut fed on different host trees. Functional predictions of microbial communities in the larval gut fed on different resistant host trees suggested that they all play a role in degrading lignocellulose, detoxification, and fixing nitrogen, which likely contribute to the ability of these larvae to thrive in a broad range of host tree species.

The management of insect pests under fluctuating temperatures has become an interesting area of study due to their ability to stimulate defense mechanisms against heat stress. Therefore, understanding insect’s physiological and molecular response to heat stress is of paramount importance for pest management. Aphids are ectothermic organisms capable of surviving in different climatic conditions. This study aimed to determine the effects of short-time heat stress on green peach aphid Myzus persicae under controlled conditions. In this study, short-time heat stress treatments at different temperatures 27, 30, 33, and 36°C with exposure times of 1, 3, 6, and 10 h, respectively, on the activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and oxidants, such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), were determined. The results showed that the short-time heat stress significantly increased the content of MDA of M. persicae by 71, 78, 81, and 86% at 36°C for the exposure times of 1, 3, 6, and 10 h, respectively, compared with control. The content of H2O2 increased by 75, 80, 85, and 88% at 36°C for the exposure times of 1, 3, 6, and 10 h, respectively, compared with the control. The SOD, POD, and CAT activities increased by 61, 76, and 77% for 1 h, 72, 83, and 84% for 3 h, 80, 85, and 86% for 6 h, and 87, 87.6, and 88% for 10 h at 36°C, respectively, compared with control. Again, under short-time heat stress, the transcription levels of Hsp22, Hsp23, Hsp27, SOD, POD, and CAT genes were upregulated compared with control. Our results suggest that M. persicae increased the enzymatic antioxidant activity and heat-shock gene expression as one of the defensive mechanisms in response to heat stresses.

It is predicted that the current atmospheric CO2 level will be doubled by the end of this century. Here, we investigate the impacts of elevated CO2 (550 and 750 μL/L) on the development and nutrition status of the green pea aphid for six generations, which is longer than previous studies. All seven examined physiological parameters were not affected over six generations under the ambient CO2 level (380 μL/L). However, the elevated CO2 levels (550 and 750 μL/L) prolonged nymph duration, decreased adult longevity, female fecundity and protein content, and increased the contents of total lipid, soluble sugar and glycogen. There was a significant interaction between the effect of CO2 levels and the effect of generations on nymph duration, female fecundity and adult longevity. The elevated CO2 had immediate effects on the female fecundity and the contents of total protein, total lipid and soluble sugar, starting within F0 generation. The adult longevity decreased, and the glycogen content increased from the F1 generation. However, the significant effect on the nymph development was only observed after three generations. Our study indicates that the elevated CO2 levels first influence the reproduction, the nutrition and the energy supply, then initiate aphid emergency responses by shortening lifespan and increasing glucose metabolism, and finally result in the slow development under further persistent elevated CO2 conditions after three generations, possibly leading to population decline under elevated CO2 conditions. Our results will guide further field experiments under climate change conditions to evaluate the effects of elevated CO2 on the development of the pea aphids and other insects, and to predict the population dynamics of the green pea aphid.

Objective. To investigate the association between myopia progression and school entrance age among Chinese schoolchildren and to suggest a more appropriate school age. Methods. 1,463 children aged six to nine years from Wenzhou, China, were examined and followed up for two and a half consecutive years. Their noncycloplegic refraction was measured twice each year by using an automatic refractometer; axial length (AL) and corneal radius of curvature (CRC) were tested annually by using the IOLMaster for 2.5 years. The questionnaires were completed by the children to collect detailed information regarding risk factors. Here, myopia is defined as a spherical equivalent less than −1.0D. Results. The changes in spherical equivalent (SE) of 7-year-old children in grade 1 and grade 2 were −0.45D and -0.56D, while changes in AL were 0.59 mm and 0.62 mm, respectively. The SE changes of 8-year-old children in grade 2 and grade 3 were −0.54D and −0.75D; meanwhile, the AL changes were 0.57 mm and 0.61 mm, respectively. Significant statistical differences were observed in ocular biological structure parameters, except for corneal radius of curvature (CRC) or anterior chamber depth (ACD), among children with the same age in different grades during this study. The prevalence of myopia was also significantly higher in higher grades for children with same age. Conclusions. Myopia is related to children’s school entrance age. Children who start school in an earlier age are more likely to suffer from myopia, and the progression of myopia can be considerably faster. Therefore, it is recommended to enter school after the age of 7.

Clustering is a critical part of many tasks and, in most applications, the number of clusters in the data are unknown and must be estimated. This paper presents an Extreme Value Theory-based approach to threshold selection for clustering, proving that the “correct” linkage distances must follow a Weibull distribution for smooth feature spaces. Deep networks and their associated deep features have transformed many aspects of learning, and this paper shows they are consistent with our extreme-linkage theory and provide Unreasonable Clusterability. We show how our novel threshold selection can be applied to both classic agglomerative clustering and the more recent FINCH (First Integer Neighbor Clustering Hierarchy) algorithm. Our evaluation utilizes over a dozen different large-scale vision datasets/subsets, including multiple face-clustering datasets and ImageNet for both in-domain and, more importantly, out-of-domain object clustering. Across multiple deep features clustering tasks with very different characteristics, our novel automated threshold selection performs well, often outperforming state-of-the-art clustering techniques even when they select parameters on the test set.

BackgroundMyopia is a common eye disorder that is approaching epidemic proportions worldwide. A genome-wide association study identified AREG (rs12511037), GABRR1 (rs13215566), and PDE10A (rs12206610) as being associated with refractive error in Asian populations. The present study investigated the associations between these three genetic variants and the occurrence and development of myopia, spherical equivalent refraction (SER), axial length (AL), and corneal curvature (CC) in a cohort of southeastern Chinese schoolchildren.MethodsWe examined and followed 550 children in grade 1 enrolled in the Wenzhou Epidemiology of Refractive Error (WERE) project. During the 4-year follow-up, non-cycloplegic refraction was evaluated twice each year, and the AL and CC were measured once every year. Age, sex, and the amounts of time spent on near work and outdoors were documented with a questionnaire. Sanger DNA sequencing was used to genotype single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). SNPtest software was used to identify potential genetic variants associated with myopia, SER, AL, and CC. Ten thousand permutations were used to correct for multiple testing.ResultsIn total, 469 children, including 249 (53.1%) boys and 220 (46.9%) girls, were included in analyses. The mean age of all the children was 6.33 ± 0.48 years. After adjusting for age, sex, time spent on near work and time spent outdoors, neither the genotypes nor the allele frequencies of the three SNPs were significantly associated with myopic shift, incident myopia or the change in SER. After adjusting for age, sex, near-work time and outdoor time with 10,000 permutations, the genotype AREG (rs12511037) was associated with an increase in AL (P′-values for the dominant, recessive, additive and general models were 0.0032, 0.0275, 0.0045, and 0.0099, respectively); the genotype PDE10A (rs12206610) was associated with a change in CC in the additive (P′ = 0.0096), dominant (P′ = 0.0096), and heterozygous models (P′ = 0.0096).ConclusionThese findings preliminarily indicate that AREG SNP rs12511037 and PDE10A SNP rs12206610 are etiologically relevant for ocular traits, providing a basis for further exploration of the development of myopia and its molecular mechanism. However, elucidating the role of AREG and PDE10A in the pathogenesis of myopia requires further animal model and human genetic epidemiology studies. The EGFR-targeting cancer therapies are commonly facing drug resistance, mostly due to mutations. Gene therapy with artificial microRNA targeting EGFR conserved sequence may avoid such problem. In this study, we constructed a recombinant adenovirus expressing EGFR-targeting artificial microRNA and active revCASP3 (Ad-EC), under the control of tumor-specific SLPI promoter, and evaluated its inhibitory effect on HEP-2 cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. MTT assay showed that cell growth inhibition rate at 72h was 44.0% in Ad-EC group at MOI 50, while the rate was 7.7% in the control virus Ad-GFP group and 3.6% in Cetuximab (500 μg/ml) group respectively. Flow cytometry analysis revealed the late apoptotic cells rate was 36.1% in Ad-EC group, significantly higher than 6.5% of Ad-GFP group (p < 0.001). When Ad-EC (MOI 50) was combined with CDDP (0.25 μg/ml), late apoptotic cells rate increased to 61.2%, significantly higher than each monotherapy group (P < 0.001). The real-time xCELLigence system recorded an effective cell growth inhibition in Ad-EC and CDDP groups, and more enhanced effect in Ad-EC plus CDDP group. Western blot revealed that Ad-EC could inhibit the activation of AKT pathway and ERK1/2 pathway, while Cetuximab had the AKT pathway over-activated. In vivo experiments with HEP-2 xenograft in nude mice confirmed the tumor inhibition in Ad-EC, CDDP and Ad-EC plus CDDP groups compared with PBS group (P < 0.01). Collectively, these data support the effective inhibition of cancer cells by this novel gene therapy strategy.

Three-dimensional printing-based additive manufacturing has emerged as a new frontier in materials science, with applications in the production of functionalized polymeric-based hybrid composites for various applications. In this work, a novel conceptual design was conceived in which an AC electric field was integrated into a commercial 3D printer (-based fused filament fabrication (FFF) working principle) to in situ manufacture hybrid composites having aligned ceramic filler particles. For this work, the thermoplastic poly lactic acid (PLA) was used as a polymer matrix while 10 vol% KNLN (K0.485Na0.485Li0.03NbO3) ceramic particles were chosen as a filler material. The degree of alignment of the ceramic powders depended upon print speed, printing temperature and distance between electrodes. At 210 °C and a 1 kV/mm applied electric field, printed samples showed nearly complete alignment of ceramic particles in the PLA matrix. This research shows that incorporating electric field sources into 3D printing processes would result in in situ ceramic particle alignment while preserving the other benefits of 3D printing.

Natural and anthropogenic changes have been altering many environmental factors. These include the amount of solar radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. However, the effects of solar radiation on insect physiology have received little attention. As a pest for agriculture and horticulture, aphids are one of the most difficult pest groups to control due to their small size, high fecundity, and non-sexual reproduction. Study of the effects of UV-B radiation on aphid physiology may provide alternative control strategies in pest management. In this study, we examined the effects of UV-B radiation on protein and sugar contents, as well as the activities of protective enzymes, of the red and green morphs of the pea aphid over eight generations. The results indicated a significant interaction between UV-B radiation and aphid generations. Exposure of the pea aphids to UV-B radiation caused a significant decrease in the protein content and a significant increase in the glycogen and trehalose contents at each generation as measured in whole aphid bioassays. The enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) of the pea aphids changed significantly at each generation with UV-B treatments. The SOD activity increased over eight generations to the highest level at G7 generation. However, the enzyme activity of CAT first increased and then decreased with UV-B treatments, and POD mostly gradually decreased over the eight generations. Therefore, UV-B radiation is an environmental factor that could result in physiological changes of the pea aphid. Moreover, our study discovered that red and green aphids did not display a significant consistent difference in the response to the UV-B treatments. These results may prove useful in future studies especially for assessing their significance in the adaptation and management against UV-B radiation.

The data presented in this article is related to the research article entitled “A One-Pot Method for Building Colloidal Nanoparticles into Bulk Dry Powders with Nanoscale Magnetic, Plasmonic and Catalytic Functionalities” (Ye et al., 2019). The data shows the hydrophobicity of the nanoparticle (NP) building blocks used for constructing NMPs obtained through contact angle measurements, along with the effect of NP hydrophobicity on the stability of the parent Pickering emulsions. SEM data of the morphology of NMPs is presented. Finally, a mathematical model is presented to predict the average diameter of NMPs produced via different experimental parameters.

Here, we present surface-enhanced Raman data for the calculation of signal uniformity and enhancement factor in SENSERS (surface-exposed nanoparticle sheet enhanced Raman spectroscopy). SEM was used to characterize the microstructure of the solid sample. The interaction between the solid sample and surface-exposed nanoparticle sheet was characterized using SERS and SEM. Based on these data a “skin” versus “sheet” type calculation method was used to calculate the magnitude of Raman signal enhancement within SENSERS. The data presented in this article is related to the research article entitled “Pressing Solids Directly Into Sheets of Plasmonic Nanojunctions Enables Solvent-Free Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy” (Xu et al., 2018).

Purpose. To assess the changing profile of astigmatism in Chinese schoolchildren and the association between astigmatism changes and ocular biometry. Methods. We examined and followed up 1,463 children aged 6–9 years from Wenzhou, China. We measured noncycloplegic refraction twice each year and tested axial length (AL) and corneal radius of curvature (CRC) annually for two years. We defined clinically significant astigmatism (CSA) as ≤−0.75 diopter (D) and non-CSA astigmatism as ≤0 to >−0.75 D. Results. Prevalence of CSA at baseline was 22.4% (n = 327) and decreased to 20.3% (n = 297) at the two-year follow-up (P=0.046). Ninety-two (8.1%) non-CSA children developed CSA. In multiple regression, after adjusting for age, gender, baseline cylinder refraction, and axis, children who had longer baseline ALs (>23.58 mm; odds ratio (OR) = 5.19, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.72–9.90) and longer baseline AL/CRC ratio (>2.99, OR = 4.99, 95% CI: 2.37–10.51) were more likely to develop CSA after two years. Four-hundred and two (27.5%) children had increased astigmatism, 783 (53.5%) had decreased, and 278 (19.0%) had no change during the two-year follow-up. Barium-doped Ca2Nb2O7 ceramics were prepared in the form of Ca2−xBaxNb2O7 (0 ≤x≤ 0.6) by solid-state reaction. The solubility limit of barium in Ca2Nb2O7 was found to be x=0.4 based on X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy analysis. When x≤ 0.4, Ca2−xBaxNb2O7 solid solutions with a monoclinic perovskites-like layered structure (PLS) were formed, whereas beyond x=0.4, a secondary phase CaNb2O6 was detected. The dielectric properties obviously depended on the barium substitution. With increasing barium amount, the dielectric constant increased from 33.5 for pure Ca2Nb2O7 to 38.6 for x=0.4 (f=1MHz). The Curie temperature (Tc) of the x=0.1 sample was 1280±5∘C. The phase transition was confirmed to be the second order.

Single phase Li2W2O7 with anorthic structure was prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method at 550∘C and the anorthic structure was stable up to 660∘C. The dielectric properties at radio frequency (RF) and microwave frequency range were characterized. The sample sintered at 640∘C exhibited the optimum microwave dielectric properties with a relative permittivity of 12.2, a quality factor value of 17,700GHz (at 9.8GHz), and a temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency of −232ppm/∘C as well as a high relative density ∼94.1%. Chemical compatibility measurement indicated Li2W2O7 did not react with aluminum electrodes when sintered at 640∘C for 4h.

A series of ceramics with a general formula, La2Ti2-xTaxO7, in which x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3, were prepared by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). Effects of tantalum substitution for titanium on the structure, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties were studied. Results revealed that the structure changed gradually from 4-layer to 3-layer due to the higher valence of Ta. The solid solution limit of tantalum in La2Ti2O7 lattice was in the proximity of x = 0.2. The ferroelectric Curie temperature (Tc) decreased with increasing tantalum doping content. dc resistivity reached a maximum value at x = 0.2 with a value of ∼ 1.0 × 108Ω ⋅ cm at 600°C. The influence of texture on the piezoelectric properties of La2Ti2-xTaxO7 ceramics was also investigated. A maximum d33 value ∼2.1 pC/N was obtained at x = 0.2.

In this study, a series of rare-earth titanates with the general formula Re2TiO5 (Re = Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) were synthesized and their microwave dielectric properties were reported. The impact of differences in rare-earth cation radii on the structure and dielectric properties was systematically analyzed. The findings indicated that ceramics of Re2TiO5 (Re = Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) were crystallized into a cubic structure with space group Fd-3m, as confirmed by Rietveld refinement and selected-area electron diffraction patterns. The rare-earth elements were analyzed for their impact on microwave dielectric properties, considering factors such as ionic polarizability, packing fraction, and bond valence theory. The resulting materials exhibited excellent microwave dielectric properties with a low permittivity (6.95-7.21), high-quality factors (19 451-20 115 GHz), and low positive temperature coefficient of resonance frequency (19.34-20.90 ppm/°C). The origin of low permittivity was elucidated through the analysis of bond length, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and impedance spectroscopy. This series of titanates exhibited unusually low permittivity characteristics in the microwave frequency range, which couldmeet the low signal transmission delay requirements in wireless communication.
