The electrochemical selective oxidative transformation of lignin feedstocks into valuable oxygenated aromatics is essential to establish a sustainable biorefinery. In this study, we used a rhombohedral ZnIn2S4 (R-ZIS) electrocatalyst to realise the efficient anodic cleavage of C-O bonds in benzyl phenyl ether (BPE), an a-O-4 lignin model compound, to a series of industrially relevant oxygenated mono-aromatics. The reaction occurred at +2 VAg/AgCl, 65 °C, and atmospheric pressure. In optimised conditions, the reaction achieved over 99% conversion rate with a Faraday efficiency of 51.6% at 91.3% conversion of BPE, that is greater than most known electrocatalytic oxidative cleavage examples. The ZnIn2S4 electrocatalyst was deposited on a carbon cloth support, and its structural properties and surface morphology were extensively investigated. Systematic potential controlled electrolysis coupled with 18O isotopic labelling confirmed that C-O scission occurred exclusively between the benzylic carbon and phenolic oxygen. Furthermore, substrate competition studies were conducted to compare the electrocatalytic performance of the R-ZIS catalyst with that of its structural analogue, hexagonal ZnIn2S4, in terms of BPE and monoaromatics conversion. The experimental results were supported by density functional theory calculations. The substrate scoping study revealed the suitability of the R-ZIS induced electrocatalytic system for a variety of substituted a-O-4/ß-O-4 model dimers. Overall, this work demonstrates an efficient anodic process that can enable the atom-efficient valorisation of lignin to produce oxygenated aromatics. The catalytic transformation of biomass‐derived volatile carboxylic acids in an aqueous environment is crucial to developing a sustainable biorefinery. To date, Kolbe electrolysis remains arguably the most effective means to convert energy‐diluted aliphatic carboxylic acids (carboxylate) to alkane for biofuel production. This paper reports the use of a structurally disordered amorphous RuO2 (a‐RuO2) that is synthesized facilely in a hydrothermal method. The a‐RuO2 is highly effective towards electrocatalytic oxidative decarboxylation of hexanoic acid and is able to produce the Kolbe product, decane, with a yield 5.4 times greater than that of commercial RuO2. A systematic study of the reaction temperature, current intensity, and electrolyte concentration reveals the enhanced Kolbe product yield is attributable to the more efficient oxidation of the carboxylate anions for the alkane dimer formation. Our work showcases a new design idea for establishing an efficient electrocatalysts for decarboxylation coupling reaction, providing a new electrocatalyst candidate for Kolbe electrolysis. Sustainable production of valuable biochemicals and biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass necessitates the development of durable and high-performance catalysts. To assist the next-stage catalyst design for hydrothermal treatment of biosugars, this paper provides a critical review of (1) recent advances in biosugar hydrothermal valorization using heterogeneous catalysts, (2) the deactivation process of catalysts based on recycling tests of representative biosugar hydrothermal treatments, (3) state-of-the-art understandings of the deactivation mechanisms of heterogeneous catalysts, and (4) strategies for preparing durable catalysts and the regeneration of deactivated catalysts. Based on the review, challenges and perspectives are proposed. Some remarkable achievements in heterogeneous catalysis of biosugars are highlighted. The understanding of catalyst durability needs to be further enhanced based on full examination of the catalytic performance based on the conversion of substrates, the yield, and selectivity of products. Further, a full examination of the physiochemical changes based on multiple characterization techniques is required to eclucidate the relationships between treatment variables and catalyst durability. Collectively, a clear understanding of the relationships between chemical reaction pathways, treatment variables, and the physiochemistry of catalysts is encouraged to be gained to advise the development of heterogeneous catalysts for long-term and efficient hydrothermal upgrading of biosugars., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)
