Abstract As a basic component of the versatile semiconductor devices, metal oxides play a critical role in modern electronic information industry. However, ultra-high precision nanopatterning of metal oxides often involves multi-step lithography and transfer process, which is time-consuming and costly. Here, we report a strategy, using metal-organic compounds as solid precursor photoresist for multi-photon lithography and post-sintering, to realize ultra-high precision additive manufacturing of metal oxides. As a result, we gain metal oxides including ZnO, CuO and ZrO2 with a critical dimension of 35 nm, which sets a benchmark for additive manufacturing of metal oxides. Besides, atomic doping can be easily accomplished by including the target element in precursor photoresist, and heterogeneous structures can also be created by multiple multi-photon lithography, allowing this strategy to accommodate the requirements of various semiconductor devices. For instance, we fabricate an ZnO photodetector by the proposed strategy.

Abstract Background The management of male infertility continues to encounter an array of challenges and constraints, necessitating an in-depth exploration of novel therapeutic targets to enhance its efficacy. As an eight-carbon medium-chain fatty acid, octanoic acid (OCA) shows promise for improving health, yet its impact on spermatogenesis remains inadequately researched. Methods Mass spectrometry was performed to determine the fatty acid content and screen for a pivotal lipid component in the serum of patients with severe spermatogenesis disorders. The sperm quality was examined, and histopathological analysis and biotin tracer tests were performed to assess spermatogenesis function and the integrity of the blood-testis barrier (BTB) in vivo. Cell-based in vitro experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of OCA administration on Sertoli cell dysfunction. This research aimed to elucidate the mechanism by which OCA may influence the function of Sertoli cells. Results A pronounced reduction in OCA content was observed in the serum of patients with severe spermatogenesis disorders, indicating that OCA deficiency is related to spermatogenic disorders. The protective effect of OCA on reproduction was tested in a mouse model of spermatogenic disorder induced by busulfan at a dose 30 mg/kg body weight (BW). The mice in the study were separated into distinct groups and administered varying amounts of OCA, specifically at doses of 32, 64, 128, and 256 mg/kg BW. After evaluating sperm parameters, the most effective dose was determined to be 32 mg/kg BW. In vivo experiments showed that treatment with OCA significantly improved sperm quality, testicular histopathology and BTB integrity, which were damaged by busulfan. Moreover, OCA intervention reduced busulfan-induced oxidative stress and autophagy in mouse testes. In vitro, OCA pretreatment (100 µM) significantly ameliorated Sertoli cell dysfunction by alleviating busulfan (800 µM)-induced oxidative stress and autophagy. Moreover, rapamycin (5 µM)-induced autophagy led to Sertoli cell barrier dysfunction, while OCA administration exerted a protective effect by alleviating autophagy. Conclusions This study demonstrated that OCA administration suppressed oxidative stress and autophagy to alleviate busulfan-induced BTB damage. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the toxicology of busulfan and a promising avenue for the development of novel OCA-based therapies for male infertility.

Ferroptosis is a type of regulated cell death that occurs due to the iron-dependent accumulation of lethal reactive oxygen species (ROS) from lipids. Ferroptosis is characterized by distinct morphological, biochemical, and genetic features that differentiate it from other regulated cell death (RCD) types, which include apoptosis, various necrosis types, and autophagy. Recent reports show that ferritin formation is correlated to many disorders, such as acute injury, infarction, inflammation, and cancer. Iron uptake disorders have also been associated with intestinal epithelial dysfunction, particularly inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Studies of iron uptake disorders may provide new insights into the pathogenesis of IBD, thereby improving the efficacy of medical interventions. This review presents an overview of ferroptosis, elucidating its fundamental mechanisms and highlighting its significant involvement in IBD.

Abstract Mask-free multi-photon lithography enables the fabrication of arbitrary nanostructures low cost and more accessible than conventional lithography. A major challenge for multi-photon lithography is to achieve ultra-high precision and desirable lateral resolution due to the inevitable optical diffraction barrier and proximity effect. Here, we show a strategy, light and matter co-confined multi-photon lithography, to overcome the issues via combining photo-inhibition and chemical quenchers. We deeply explore the quenching mechanism and photoinhibition mechanism for light and matter co-confined multiphoton lithography. Besides, mathematical modeling helps us better understand that the synergy of quencher and photo-inhibition can gain a narrowest distribution of free radicals. By using light and matter co-confined multiphoton lithography, we gain a 30 nm critical dimension and 100 nm lateral resolution, which further decrease the gap with conventional lithography.

Elucidating the absorption and translocation of heavy metal(loid)s by common vegetables across different growth environments and stages is crucial for conducting accurate environmental risk assessments and for associated control. This study investigated temporal variations in the absorption and translocation capacities of pak choi (Brassica rapa L.) for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in polluted soils during the plant growth cycle under greenhouse and open-field cultivation modes. Results showed high root metal(loid) bioconcentration factors and root-to-shoot translocation factors for Cd (0.25 and 1.44, respectively) and Zn (0.26 and 1.01), but low values for As (0.06 and 0.88) and Pb (0.06 and 0.87). The Cd concentration in the aerial edible parts peaked during the early slow growth period, whereas other heavy metal(loid)s peaked during the later stable maturity period. Root bioconcentration and root-to-shoot translocation factors did not significantly differ between cultivation modes. However, greenhouse cultivation exhibited lower average Cd and Zn concentrations in the edible parts and cumulative uptake amounts of most metal(loid)s than open-field cultivation during the typical harvest period spanning days 60 and 90. Short-term transitioning from open-field to greenhouse cultivation may reduce health risks associated with heavy metal(loid) intake via pak choi consumption. These findings facilitate sustainable agricultural practices and food safety management.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are widely used for hydrological monitoring, underwater exploration, and geological surveys. However, AUVs face limitations in underwater navigation due to the high costs associated with Strapdown Inertial Navigation System (SINS) and Doppler Velocity Log (DVL), hindering the development of low-cost vehicles. Micro Electro Mechanical System Inertial Measurement Units (MEMS IMUs) are widely used in industry due to their low cost and can output acceleration and angular velocity, making them suitable as an Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS) for low-cost vehicles. However, poorly calibrated MEMS IMUs provide an inaccurate angular velocity, leading to rapid drift in orientation. In underwater environments where AUVs cannot use GPS for position correction, this drift can have severe consequences. To address this issue, this paper proposes Underwater Gyros Denoising Net (UGDN), a method based on dilated convolutions and LSTM that learns and extracts the spatiotemporal features of IMU sequences to dynamically compensate for the gyroscope’s angular velocity measurements, reducing attitude and heading errors. In the experimental section of this paper, we deployed this method on a dataset collected from field trials and achieved significant results. The experimental results show that the accuracy of MEMS IMU data denoised by UGDN approaches that of fiber-optic SINS, and when integrated with DVL, it can serve as a low-cost underwater navigation solution.

Underwater vehicles heavily depend on the integration of inertial navigation with Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) for fusion-based localization. Given the constraints imposed by sensor costs, ensuring the optimization ability and robustness of fusion algorithms is of paramount importance. While filtering-based techniques such as Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) offer mature solutions to nonlinear problems, their reliance on linearization approximation may compromise final accuracy. Recently, Invariant EKF (IEKF) methods based on the concept of smooth manifolds have emerged to address this limitation. However, the optimization by matrix Lie groups must satisfy the “group affine” property to ensure state independence, which constrains the applicability of IEKF to high-precision positioning of underwater multi-sensor fusion. In this study, an alternative state-independent underwater fusion invariant filtering approach based on a two-frame group utilizing DVL, Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), and Earth-Centered Earth-Fixed (ECEF) configuration is proposed. This methodology circumvents the necessity for group affine in the presence of biases. We account for inertial biases and DVL pole-arm effects, achieving convergence in an imperfect IEKF by either fixed observation or body observation information. Through simulations and real datasets that are time-synchronized, we demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm.

Multibeam echo sounders (MBESs) enable extensive underwater environment exploration. However, due to weak correlation between adjacent multibeam sonar data and difficulties in inter-frame feature matching, the resulting underwater mapping accuracy frequently falls short of the desired level. To address this issue, this study presents the development of a multibeam data processing system, which includes functionalities for sonar parameter configuration, data storage, and point cloud conversion. Subsequently, an Iterative Extended Kalman Filter (iEKF) algorithm is employed for odometry estimation, facilitating the initial construction of the point cloud map. To further enhance mapping accuracy, we utilize the Generalized Iterative Closest Point (GICP) algorithm for point cloud registration, effectively merging point cloud data collected at different times from the same location. Finally, real-world lake experiments demonstrate that our method achieves an Absolute Trajectory Error (ATE) of 15.10 m and an average local point cloud registration error of 0.97 m. Furthermore, we conduct measurements on various types of artificial targets. The experimental results indicate that the average location error of the targets calculated by our method is 4.62 m, which meets the accuracy requirements for underwater target exploration.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, people exhibited various forms of adjustments. This study examines how situational factors (i.e., the severity of COVID-19) and individual differences (i.e., the HEXACO traits) affect one’s COVID-19-related responses regarding behaviors (i.e., mask-wearing and hoarding), worries (i.e., worrying about infecting and spreading COVID-19), and attitudes (i.e., discrimination and empathy toward people infecting COVID-19) in China. With a sample of 927 participants, our results show that the severity of COVID-19 was predictive of all the responses, and its predictive value was more pronounced relative to personality traits. Concerning the association between personality traits and responses, Honesty-Humility and Conscientiousness were predictive of one’s behaviors, Emotionality was predictive of one’s worries, and almost all the HEXACO traits were associated with one’s attitudes toward people infected with COVID-19. This study sheds some light on understanding how situations and individual differences shape one’s responses in a time of emergency.

Abstract Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive endocrine disorder that frequently exhibits low-grade inflammation, pro-oxidant activity, and gut dysbiosis. PCOS has become one of the leading causes of female infertility worldwide. Recently, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have been proven to benefit metabolic disorders in PCOS patients. However, its roles in the regulation of metabolic and endocrinal balances in PCOS pathophysiology are not clear. In the present study, we aimed to explore how omega-3 PUFAs alleviate ovarian dysfunction and insulin resistance in mice with dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)-induced PCOS by modulating the gut microbiota. Methods We induced PCOS in female mice by injecting them with DHEA and then treated them with omega-3 PUFAs. 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) amplicon sequencing, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and antibiotic treatment were used to evaluate the role of microbiota in the regulation of ovarian functions and insulin resistance (IR) by omega-3 PUFAs. To further investigate the mechanism of gut microbiota on omega-3-mediated ovarian and metabolic protective effects, inflammatory and oxidative stress markers in ovaries and thermogenic markers in subcutaneous and brown adipose tissues were investigated. Results We found that oral supplementation with omega-3 PUFAs ameliorates the PCOS phenotype. 16S rDNA analysis revealed that omega-3 PUFA treatment increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria in the gut, thereby alleviating DHEA-induced gut dysbiosis. Antibiotic treatment and FMT experiments further demonstrated that the mechanisms underlying omega-3 benefits likely involve direct effects on the ovary to inhibit inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-18. In addition, the gut microbiota played a key role in the improvement of adipose tissue morphology and function by decreasing multilocular cells and thermogenic markers such as Ucp1, Pgc1a, Cited and Cox8b within the subcutaneous adipose tissues. Conclusion These findings indicate that omega-3 PUFAs ameliorate androgen-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis. The gut microbiota plays a key role in the regulation of omega-3-mediated IR protective effects in polycystic ovary syndrome mice. Moreover, omega-3 PUFA-regulated improvements in the ovarian dysfunction associated with PCOS likely involve direct effects on the ovary to inhibit inflammation. Our findings suggest that omega-3 supplementation may be a promising therapeutic approach for the treatment of PCOS by modulating gut microbiota and alleviating ovarian dysfunction and insulin resistance.

Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is characterized by a high recurrence and mortality rate. Cuproptosis is involved in cell death regulation in in a variety of solid tumors. Long non-coding RNAs that regulate cuproptosis genes in the pathogenesis of acute leukemia have yet to be explored. Methods: First, cuproptosis genes with distinct expression levels were discovered by contrasting AML with normal samples from the TCGA and GTEx cohorts. Pearson correlation and univariate Cox-regression analysis were performed to identify cuproptosis-associated lncRNAs with significant prognostic values. Then the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression was utilized to establish a multi-gene signature to predict AML prognosis. Next, Kaplan-Meier estimator, receiver operating characteristic curve, and a nomogram were performed to evaluate the predictive capacity of the risk signature. Functional enrichment analyses were employed to assess their function. Moreover, qRT-PCR testing of lncRNA expression in AML samples was conducted. The competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network was constructed to find the target genes. Results: A risk model based on the signature of three cuproptosis-associated lncRNAs was developed. The results showed that the model possessed excellent prognostic potential. The nomogram raised the accuracy in predicting AML survival. In addition, functional enrichment analyses demonstrated an enrichment of inflammatory and immune-related pathways. Moreover, correlations between the risk signature and clinicopathological variables, tumor mutational burden, RNA stemness score, immune profile, and drug sensitivity were observed. Furthermore, we discovered that TRAF3IP2-AS1 may function as a ceRNA to regulate cuproptosis and ferroptosis gene expression. Conclusion: The risk signature established in this study could serve as a reliable biosignature for AML prognosis. And the findings presented here may facilitate research on cuproptosis in AML.

Abstract In recent years, the postponement of childbearing has become a critical social issue. Male fertility is negatively associated with age because of testis aging. Spermatogenesis is impaired with age, but the molecular mechanism remains unknown. The dynamic posttranslational modification O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc), which is a type of monosaccharide modification, has been shown to drive the process of aging in various systems, but it has not yet been investigated in the testis and male reproductive aging. Thus, this study aims to investigate the alteration of O-GlcNAc with aging and explore the role of O-GlcNAc in spermatogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that the decline in spermatogenesis in aged mice is associated with elevation of O-GlcNAc. O-GlcNAc is specifically localized in differentiating spermatogonia and spermatocytes, indicating its crucial role in meiotic initiation and progression. Mimicking the age-related elevation of O-GlcNAc in young mice by disabling O-GlcNAcase (OGA) using the chemical inhibitor Thiamet-G can recapitulate the impairment of spermatogenesis in aged mice. Mechanistically, the elevation of O-GlcNAc in the testis leads to meiotic pachytene arrest due to defects in synapsis and recombination. Furthermore, decreasing O-GlcNAc in aged testes using an O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT) inhibitor can partially rescue the age-related impairment of spermatogenesis. Our results highlight that O-GlcNAc, as a novel posttranslational modification, participates in meiotic progression and drives the impairment of spermatogenesis during aging.

Abstract In the urban environment, the radar is easily affected by multipath (MP) returns. The problem of detecting point‐like targets in the urban environment with the existence of resolvable MP returns under the background of heterogeneous clutter is addressed. Two adaptive detectors have been devised with a combination of prior information on the environment and echoes of target. The detectors can use the MP echoes in all MP prediction range cells for detection or in some available paths for signal detection by the available path selection algorithm that eliminates the weak signal propagation paths. Remarkably, the proposed decision schemes exhibit the desirable constant false alarm rate property with respect to the unknown parameters of the heterogeneous interference. The performance assessment, conducted on simulated data in terms of detection probability also in comparison with conventional solutions, highlights the effectiveness of the MP exploitation, while the MP signal is strong and shows the detection performance enhancement potential.

Abstract Advances in direct laser writing to attain super-resolution are required to improve fabrication performance and develop potential applications for nanophotonics. In this study, a novel technique using single-color peripheral photoinhibition lithography was developed to improve the resolution of direct laser writing while preventing the chromatic aberration characteristics of conventional multicolor photoinhibition lithography, thus offering a robust tool for fabricating 2D and 3D nanophotonic structures. A minimal feature size of 36 nm and a resolution of 140 nm were achieved with a writing speed that was at least 10 times faster than existing photoinhibition lithography. Super-resolution and fast scanning enable the fabrication of spin-decoupled metasurfaces in the visible range within a printing duration of a few minutes. Finally, a subwavelength photonic crystal with a near-ultraviolet structural color was fabricated to demonstrate the potential of 3D printing. This technique is a flexible and reliable tool for fabricating ultracompact optical devices.

Deep learning-based object detection methods have demonstrated remarkable effectiveness across various domains. Recently, there has been growing interest in applying these techniques to underwater environments. Conventional optical imaging methods face severe limitations when operating in underwater conditions, restricting their ability to identify objects with good visibility and at close distances. Consequently, side-scan sonar (SSS) has emerged as a common equipment choice for underwater detection due to its compatibility with the characteristics of sound waves in water. This paper introduces a novel method, termed the Enhanced YOLOv7-Based Approach, for detecting small objects in SSS images. Building upon the widely-adopted YOLOv7 method, the proposed approach incorporates several enhancements aimed at improving detection accuracy. First, a dedicated detection layer tailored for small objects is added to the original network architecture. Additionally, two attention mechanisms are integrated within the backbone and neck components of the network, respectively, to strengthen the network’s focus on object features. Finally, the network features are recombined based on the BiFPN structure. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms mainstream object detection algorithms. In comparison to the original YOLOv7 network, it achieves a Precision of 95.5%, indicating a significant improvement of 4.8%. Moreover, its Recall reaches 87.0%, representing an enhancement of 5.1%, while the mean Average Precision (mAP) at an IoU threshold of 0.5 (mAP@.5) reaches 86.9%, reflecting a 6.7% improvement. Furthermore, the mAP@.5:.95 reaches 55.1%, a 4.8% enhancement. Therefore, the method presented in this paper enhances the performance of YOLOv7 for object detection in SSS images, providing a fresh perspective on small object detection based on SSS images and contributing to the advancement of underwater detection techniques.

Blood-testis barrier (BTB) damage promotes spermatogenesis dysfunction, which is a critical cause of male infertility. Dyslipidemia has been correlated with male infertility, but the major hazardous lipid and the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we firstly discovered an elevation of palmitic acid (PA) and a decrease of inhibin B in patients with severe dyszoospermia, which leaded us to explore the effects of PA on Sertoli cells. We observed a damage of BTB by PA. PA penetration to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and its damage to ER structures were exhibited by microimaging and dynamic observation, and consequent ER stress was proved to mediate PA-induced Sertoli cell barrier disruption. Remarkably, we demonstrated a critical role of aberrant protein palmitoylation in PA-induced Sertoli cell barrier dysfunction. An ER protein, Calnexin, was screened out and was demonstrated to participate in this process, and suppression of its palmitoylation showed an ameliorating effect. We also found that ω-3 poly-unsaturated fatty acids down-regulated Calnexin palmitoylation, and alleviated BTB dysfunction. Our results indicate that dysregulated palmitoylation induced by PA plays a pivotal role in BTB disruption and subsequent spermatogenesis dysfunction, suggesting that protein palmitoylation might be therapeutically targetable in male infertility.

Students' homework emotions greatly influence the quality of homework, learning activities, and even academic achievement and burden. Therefore, encouraging students' positive homework emotions is essential for their development. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between three types of teachers' homework feedback (checking homework on the board, grading homework, and constructive comments), students' positive and negative homework emotions in Chinese subjects while taking into account the mediating effect of academic self-esteem and gender differences in these underlying relationships. 928 elementary school students of 4-6th grade participated in this survey and completed scales. Results showed that (1) checking homework on the board and constructive comments positively impacted students' positive emotions, while checking homework on the board negatively influenced students' negative emotions. In contrast, constructive comments did not impact students' negative emotions. Furthermore, grading homework had no significant effect on students' emotions; (2) academic self-esteem mediated the relationship between teachers' homework feedback and students' homework emotions, and (3) gender moderated some underlying relationships between teachers' homework feedback, students' homework emotions, and academic self-esteem. This study has implications for teachers in designing and choosing high-quality homework feedback, encouraging students' positive homework emotions, and reducing students' negative homework emotions.

Beams with optical vortices are widely used in various fields, including optical communication, optical manipulation and trapping, and, especially in recent years, in the processing of nanoscale structures. However, circular vortex beams are difficult to use for the processing of chiral micro and nanostructures. This paper introduces a multiramp helical–conical beam that can produce a three-dimensional spiral light field in a tightly focused system. Using this spiral light beam and the two-photon direct writing technique, micro–nano structures with chiral characteristics in space can be directly written under a single exposure. The fabrication efficiency is more than 20 times higher than the conventional point-by-point writing strategy. The tightly focused properties of the light field were utilized to analyze the field-dependent properties of the micro–nano structure, such as the number of multiramp mixed screw-edge dislocations. Our results enrich the means of two-photon polymerization technology and provide a simple and stable way for the micromachining of chiral microstructures, which may have a wide range of applications in optical tweezers, optical communications, and metasurfaces.

Abstract Background This study examined the feasibility of transabdominal intestinal ultrasonography in evaluating acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI). Methods A total of 116 patients were included. Intestinal ultrasonography was conducted daily within 1 week after admission to the intensive care unit. Ultrasonography indicators including intestinal diameter, changes in the intestinal folds, thickness of the intestinal wall, stratification of the intestinal wall, and intestinal peristalsis (movement of the intestinal contents) were observed to determine the acute gastrointestinal injury ultrasonography (AGIUS) score. The gastrointestinal and urinary tract sonography ultrasound (GUTS) protocol score was also calculated. During the first week of the study, the gastrointestinal failure (GIF) score was determined daily. The correlations between transabdominal intestinal scores (AGIUS and GUTS) and the GIF score were analyzed to clarify the feasibility of evaluating AGI through observation of the intestine. The utility of intestinal ultrasonography indicators in predicting feeding intolerance was investigated to improve the ability of clinicians to manage AGI. Results A total of 751 ultrasonic examinations were performed with 511 images (68%) considered to be of “good quality.” AGIUS and GUTS scores differed significantly between AGI patients (GIF score 0–2) and non-AGI patients (GIF score 3–4) (p 10/min) have increased risk for feeding intolerance (16/83 vs. 25/33, p

This paper is concerned with a delayed eco-epidemic model with a Leslie–Gower Holling type III functional response. The main results are given in terms of permanence and Hopf bifurcation. First of all, sufficient conditions for permanence of the model are established. Directly afterward, sufficient conditions for local stability and existence of Hopf bifurcation are obtained by regarding the delay as bifurcation parameter. Finally, properties of the Hopf bifurcation are investigated with the aid of the normal form theory and centre manifold theorem. Numerical simulations are carried out to verify the obtained theoretical results.

Background: Primary lymphoma of bone (PLB) is an extremely rare malignancy arising in the skeletal system. There is no consensus over the best definition of PLB. Most of the published articles are single-institutional retrospective studies with a limited sample size. The rarity of PLB and discrepancies on diagnostic criteria has resulted in a vague understanding of PLB. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of 2558 PLB patients who were registered in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 1973 to 2016. Survival rates were calculated using the Kaplan–Meier method. The effects of various factors on survival outcomes were analyzed by using the log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted by using the Cox proportional hazards model to determine independent prognostic factors. Results: The median follow-up time of all eligible patients was 58 months. There seemed no sex preponderance in PLB incidence. The most involved sites are axial skeletons. The most common histological subtype was diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The 3-, 5-, 10-, and 20-year overall survival (OS) rates were 70.70%, 65.70%, 54.40% and 39.50%, respectively. PLB patients whose primary tumor sites were appendicular and craniofacial skeletons had a significant survival advantage [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.694, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.552–0.872; HR = 0.729, 95% CI 0.597–0.889, respectively] over those with axial skeletons as primary tumor sites. Patients with Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL)–mature B-cell lymphoma, and NHL-precursor-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma also had a significant OS advantage (HR = 0.392, 95% CI 0.200–0.771; HR = 0.826, 95% CI 0.700–0.973; and HR = 0.453, 95% CI 0.223–0.923, respectively). Patients with Ann Arbor stage III–IV at diagnosis were at higher risk of death than those with stage I–II (HR = 1.348, 95% CI 1.107–1.641). Chemotherapy was an independent favorable prognostic factor (HR = 0.734, 95% CI 0.605–0.890). Conclusions: Primary anatomic site, histology type, higher Ann Arbor stage and chemotherapy were independent prognostic factors. Chemotherapy played a pivotal role in PLB treatment.

WeChat is a highly popular social media in China and many other Asian countries, but little is known about its effectiveness in facilitating international students' academic and social functioning. Hence, the present study aimed to examine causal or reciprocal relationships among WeChat usage intensity, behavioral engagement in academic learning (BE-academic) and in local social activities (BE-social), and academic and social adjustment. To this end, we employed a three-wave longitudinal design among international students in China with data collected at three times (i.e., Time 1 data collected in December of 2020, Time 2 data collected in March of 2021, and Time 3 data collected in June of 2021). Results based on the cross-lagged panel analyses indicated that in academic domains, WeChat usage intensity positively predicted longitudinal changes in BE-academic and academic adjustment positively predicted longitudinal changes in WeChat usage intensity across Time 1 and Time 3. In social domains, WeChat usage intensity positively predicted longitudinal changes in BE-social and social adjustment, and BE-social positively predicted longitudinal changes in social adjustment from Time 1 to Time 2. Additionally, the reverse effects of social adjustment on WeChat usage intensity were revealed across Time 1 and Time 3.

International students are featured by having to rebuild social relationships and cope with various sojourn-related challenges in the host society. Therefore, the social use of social media and coping self-efficacy can be constructs that are highly relevant to this population and may facilitate their sociocultural adjustment, but no prior study examines their relationships. The present study aimed to fill in the research gap by conducting a three-wave longitudinal study to investigate their reciprocal links, as well as the mediating role of coping self-efficacy, among international students in China. Results from cross-lagged panel analyses revealed the unidirectional links from prior social use of WeChat (i.e., a popular social media in China) to subsequent coping self-efficacy and from prior coping self-efficacy to subsequent sociocultural adjustment, as opposed to the bi-directional links. Furthermore, coping self-efficacy was found to longitudinally mediate the link from prior social use of WeChat to subsequent sociocultural adjustment.

Dexmedetomidine is generally used for sedaton in critically ill, it could shorten duration of mechanical ventilation, ICU stay and lower basic metabolism. However, the exact mechanism of these positive effects remains unkown. Here we investigated the hypothesis that dexmedetomidine could ameliorate muscle wasting in endotoxemic rats and whether it was related to hypothalamic neuropeptides alteration and inflammation. Fourty-eight adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were intraperitoneally injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (5 mg/kg) or saline, followed by 50 μg/kg dexmedetomidine or saline administration via the femoral vein catheter (infusion at 5 μg·kg-1·hr-1). Twenty-four hours after injection, hypothalamus tissues and skeletal muscle were obtained. Muscle wasting was measured by the mRNA expression of two E3 ubiquitin ligases, muscle atrophy F-box (MAFbx) and muscle ring finger 1 (MuRF-1) as well as 3-methylhistidine (3-MH) and tyrosine release. Hypothalamic inflammatory markers and neuropeptides expression were also detected in all four groups. Results showed that LPS administration led to significant increase in hypothalamic inflammation together with muscle wasting. Increased hypothalamic neuropeptides, proopiomelanocortin (POMC), cocaine and amphetamine-related transcript (CART) and neuropeptides Y (NPY) and decreased agouti-related protein (AgRP) were also observed. Meanwhile dexmedetomidine administration ameliorated muscle wasting, hypothalamic inflammation and modulated the alteration of neuropeptides, POMC, CART and AgRP, in endotoxemic rats. In conclusion, dexmedetomidine could alleviate muscle wasting in endotoxemic rats, and it could also attenuate the alteration of hypothalamic neuropeptides and reduce hypothalamic inflammation.

BACKGROUND:Methanogenesis can indicate the fermentation activity of the gastrointestinal anaerobic flora. Methane also has a demonstrated anti-inflammatory potential. We hypothesized that enriched methane inhalation can influence the respiratory activity of the liver mitochondria after an ischemia-reperfusion (IR) challenge. METHODS:The activity of oxidative phosphorylation system complexes was determined after in vitro methane treatment of intact liver mitochondria. Anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to standardized 60-min warm hepatic ischemia inhaled normoxic air (n = 6) or normoxic air containing 2.2% methane, from 50 min of ischemia and throughout the 60-min reperfusion period (n = 6). Measurement data were compared with those on sham-operated animals (n = 6 each). Liver biopsy samples were subjected to high-resolution respirometry; whole-blood superoxide and hydrogen peroxide production was measured; hepatocyte apoptosis was detected with TUNEL staining and in vivo fluorescence laser scanning microscopy. RESULTS:Significantly decreased complex II-linked basal respiration was found in the normoxic IR group at 55 min of ischemia and a lower respiratory capacity (~60%) and after 5 min of reperfusion. Methane inhalation preserved the maximal respiratory capacity at 55 min of ischemia and significantly improved the basal respiration during the first 30 min of reperfusion. The IR-induced cytochrome c activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and hepatocyte apoptosis were also significantly reduced. CONCLUSIONS:The normoxic IR injury was accompanied by significant functional damage of the inner mitochondrial membrane, increased cytochrome c activity, enhanced ROS production and apoptosis. An elevated methane intake confers significant protection against mitochondrial dysfunction and reduces the oxidative damage of the hepatocytes.

Condition monitoring of hydraulic systems has been using automatic control in industrial system. In this paper, a sensor network based intelligent control is proposed for efficient solenoid valve identification. The detection system learns to detect the change of output pressure of multipoints that represent a more complicated task. Linear correlation analysis is introduced for feature extraction, which allows for a significant reduction in the dimension of original data without compromising the change detection performance. Implemented as an agent identifying the valve types under measurement, the support vector machine classifier achieves a significant high accuracy in identification and an increase in deployment efficiency. Experimental results prove that the system is feasible for application designs and could be implemented on technological platforms.

We have identified expression of the gene encoding the transcriptional coactivator FOG-1 (Friend of GATA-1; Zfpm1, Zinc finger protein multitype 1) in B lymphocytes. We found that FOG-1 expression is directly or indirectly dependent on the B cell-specific coactivator OBF-1 and that it is modulated during B cell development: expression is observed in early but not in late stages of B cell development. To directly test in vivo the role of FOG-1 in B lymphocytes, we developed a novel embryonic stem cell recombination system. For this, we combined homologous recombination with the FLP recombinase activity to rapidly generate embryonic stem cell lines carrying a Cre-inducible transgene at the Rosa26 locus. Using this system, we successfully generated transgenic mice where FOG-1 is conditionally overexpressed in mature B-cells or in the entire hematopoietic system. While overexpression of FOG-1 in B cells did not significantly affect B cell development or function, we found that enforced expression of FOG-1 throughout all hematopoietic lineages led to a reduction in the number of circulating eosinophils, confirming and extending to mammals the known function of FOG-1 in this lineage.

A pair of sensing shoes for measuring foot pressure was developed. This system aims at recognizing human movement in unlimited environments. The multipressure sensor network of seven sensors on one insole was set up. Analysis for discriminating the user's movements from foot pressure distribution was carried out, considering the movements of standing, walking, going upstairs, and going downstairs. These actions were discriminated using characteristics extracted from the data of sensors. The classifier based on SVM showed highly accurate movement recognition. Specifically, to improve the classification performance, PCA based dimensionality reduction and channel reduction based data fusion were introduced. Experimental outcomes verified the testing speed of the classification function which was improved without affecting the accuracy rate. The results confirmed that this discriminant analysis can be employed for automatically recognizing human moving pattern based on foot pressure signal.

The chromatin regulator Aiolos and the transcriptional coactivator OBF-1 have been implicated in regulating aspects of B cell maturation and activation. Mice lacking either of these factors have a largely normal early B cell development. However, when both factors are eliminated simultaneously a block is uncovered at the transition between pre-B and immature B cells, indicating that these proteins exert a critical function in developing B lymphocytes. In mice deficient for Aiolos and OBF-1, the numbers of immature B cells are reduced, small pre-BII cells are increased and a significant impairment in immunoglobulin light chain DNA rearrangement is observed. We identified genes whose expression is deregulated in the pre-B cell compartment of these mice. In particular, we found that components of the pre-BCR, such as the surrogate light chain genes lambda5 and VpreB, fail to be efficiently silenced in double-mutant mice. Strikingly, developmentally regulated nuclear repositioning of the lambda5 gene is impaired in pre-B cells lacking OBF-1 and Aiolos. These studies uncover a novel role for OBF-1 and Aiolos in controlling the transcription and nuclear organization of genes involved in pre-BCR function.

Ovary ecdysteroidogenic hormone I (OEH I) is a gonadotropin in the female mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Whole-mount immunocytochemistry using OEH I antisera revealed an extensive distribution of immunostained cells in larvae and adults of this mosquito comparable to that observed in the African malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae. Medial neurosecretory cells were stained in brains of larvae and adult Ae. aegypti. In An gambiae the lateral neurosecretory cells were stained more often. In both species, immunostained axons from these cells extended out of the brain through the neurohemal organ associated with the aorta and branched extensively along the midgut. Immunostained endocrine cells were observed in larval and adult midguts of both species. In adults, abdominal metameric perivisceral organs were stained. Stained axons interconnected the perivisceral organs and neurosecretory cells in the abdominal ganglia. Episodic release of OEH I from these organs was evident in female Ae. aegypti, when staining disappeared at 12 hours after a blood meal and returned by 48 hours to levels observed before and up to 2 hours after the blood meal. Two sites were specifically stained only in An. gambiae: an axon net around the pyloric valve in the hindgut of larvae and adults and a ring of endocrine cells in the cardiac valve in the larval midgut. The markedly similar localizations of immunostained cells in larvae and adults of two distantly related species indicate that OEH I, or a homolog, is conserved within this group of Diptera and likely has stage- and sex- specific functions.

Background: Natural products have a long history in drug discovery. Lycorine is an alkaloid derived from Amaryllidaceae plants, demonstrating significant pharmacological potential. Lycorine and its hydrochloride salt, lycorine hydrochloride, have shown outstanding anticancer effects both in vitro and in vivo. Purpose: This review aims to comprehensively summarize recent research advancements regarding the anticancer potential of lycorine and lycorine hydrochloride. It intends to elucidate current research limitations, optimization strategies, and future research directions to guide clinical translation. Methods: Various databases, e.g., Web of Science, PubMed, and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, are systematically searched for relevant articles using keywords such as lycorine, cancer, pharmacokinetics, and toxicity. The retrieved literature is then categorized and summarized to provide an overview of the research advancements in the anticancer potential of lycorine and lycorine hydrochloride. Results: Lycorine and lycorine hydrochloride demonstrate significant anticancer activities against various types of cancer both in vitro and in vivo, employing diverse mechanisms such as inducing cell cycle arrest, triggering cellular senescence, regulating programmed cell death, inhibiting angiogenesis, suppressing metastasis, and modulating immune system. Furthermore, pharmacokinetic profiles and toxicity data are summarized. Additionally, this review discusses the druggability, limitations, optimization strategies, and target identification of lycorine, offering insights for future preclinical studies. Conclusion: The anticancer effects and safety profile of lycorine and lycorine hydrochloride suggest promising potential for clinical applications. Further research on their in-depth mechanisms and optimization strategies targeting their limitations will enhance the understanding and druggability of lycorine and lycorine hydrochloride.
