Active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) enables flexible signal reflection control with \emph{power amplification}, thus effectively compensating the product-distance path-loss in conventional passive-IRS aided systems. In this letter, we characterize the communication performance of an active-IRS aided single-cell wireless network. To this end, we first propose a \emph{customized} IRS deployment strategy, where the active IRSs are uniformly deployed within a ring concentric with the cell to serve the users far from the base station. Next, given the Nakagami-$m$ fading channel, we characterize the cascaded active-IRS channel by using the \emph{mixture Gamma distribution} approximation and derive a closed-form expression for the mean signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the user averaged over channel fading. Moreover, we numerically show that to maximize the system performance, it is necessary to choose a proper active-IRS density given a fixed number of total reflecting elements, which significantly differs from the passive-IRS case for which the centralized IRS deployment scheme is better. Furthermore, the active-IRS aided wireless network achieves higher spatial throughput than the passive-IRS counterpart when the total number of reflecting elements is small.

Future wireless networks are expected to provide high spectral efficiency, low hardware cost, and scalable connectivity. An appealing option to meet these requirements is the intelligent reflective surface (IRS), which guarantees a smart propagation environment by adjusting the phase shift and direction of received signals. However, the composite channel of IRS-assisted wireless networks, which is composed of a direct link and cascaded link aided by the IRS, has made it challenging to carry out system design and analysis. This motivates us to find tractable and accurate channel modeling methods to model multiple types of channels. To this end, we adopt mixture Gamma distributions to model the direct link, the cascaded link, and the mixture channel. Moreover, this channel modeling method can be applied to various transmission environments with an arbitrary type of fading as the underlying fading of each link. Additionally, a unified stochastic geometric framework is introduced based on this tractable channel model. First, we derived distributions of the cascaded link and the mixture channel by proving multipliability and quadratic form of mixture Gamma distributed channels. Then, we carried out a stochastic geometric analysis of the system performance of the IRS-assisted wireless network with the proposed channel modeling method. Our simulation shows that the mixture Gamma distributed approximation method guarantees high accuracy and promotes the feasibility of system performance analysis of IRS-assisted networks with complicated propagation environments, especially with a generalized fading model. Furthermore, the proposed analytical framework provides positive insights into the system design regarding reliability and efficiency.

Terahertz (THz) band contains abundant spectrum resources that can offer ultra-high data rates. However, due to the THz band's inherent characteristics, i.e., low penetrability, high path loss, and non-negligible molecular absorption effect, THz communication can only provide limited coverage. To overcome these fundamental obstacles and fully utilize the THz band, we consider a hybrid Internet-of-Things (IoT) network consisting of THz and millimeter wave (mmWave) cells. A hybrid IoT network can dynamically switch between mmWave and THz links to ensure reliable and ultra-fast data connection. We use a stochastic geometric framework to evaluate the proposed hybrid IoT network's coverage probability and spectral efficiency and validate the analysis through numerical simulation. In this paper, we derive a closed-form expression of the Laplace transform of the interference while considering an accurate multi-level Flat-top (MLFT) antenna pattern. We observed that a large antenna array with a strong bias to the THz base station (TBS) improves the end-to-end network performance through numerical results. Furthermore, we recognized a fundamental trade-off relation between the TBS's node density and the bias to mmWave/THz; e.g., high TBS density with a strong bias to the TBS may degrade the network performance., Comment: Submitted to IEEE IoT Journal

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is a promising solution for achieving high data rate and low latency in 5G wireless cellular networks. Since directional beamforming and antenna arrays are exploited in the mmWave networks, accurate angle-of-arrival (AOA) information can be obtained and utilized for localization purposes. The performance of a localization system is typically assessed by the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) evaluated based on fixed node locations. However, this strategy only produces a fixed value for the CRLB specific to the scenario of interest. To allow randomly distributed nodes, stochastic geometry has been proposed to study the CRLB for time-of-arrival-based localization. To the best of our knowledge, this methodology has not yet been investigated for AOA-based localization. In this work, we are motivated to consider the mmWave cellular network and derive the CRLB for AOA-based localization and its distribution using stochastic geometry. We analyze how the CRLB is affected by the node locations' spatial distribution, including the target and participating base stations. To apply the CRLB on a network setting with random node locations, we propose an accurate approximation of the CRLB using the L/4-th value of ordered distances where L is the number of participating base stations. Furthermore, we derive the localizability of the mmWave network, which is the probability that a target is localizable, and examine how the network parameters influence the localization performance. The wireless channel of 5G communications will have unique characteristics that can not be fully apprehended by the traditional fading models. For instance, the wireless channel may often be dominated by a finite number of specular components, the conventional Gaussian assumption may not be applied to the diffuse scattered waves and the point scatterers may be inhomogeneously distributed. These physical attributes were incorporated into the state-of-the-art fading models, such as the kappa-mu shadowed fading model, the generalized two-ray fading model, and the fluctuating two ray fading model. Unfortunately, much of the existing published work commonly imposed arbitrary assumptions on the channel parameters to achieve theoretical tractability, thereby limiting their application to represent a diverse range of propagation environments. This motivates us to find a more general fading model that incorporates multiple specular components with clusterized diffuse scattered waves, but achieves analytical tractability at the same time. To this end, we introduced the Multiple-Waves with Generalized Diffuse Scatter (MWGD) and Fluctuating Multiple-Ray (FMR) model that allow an arbitrary number of specular components and assume generalized diffuse scattered model. We derive the distribution functions of the signal envelop in closed form and calculate second order statistics of the proposed fading model. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance metrics of wireless communications systems, such as the capacity, outage probability, and average bit error rate. Through numerical simulations, we obtain important new insights into the link performance of the 5G communications while considering a diverse range of fading conditions and channel characteristics.

Emerging cellular technologies such as those proposed for use in 5G communications will accommodate a wide range of usage scenarios with diverse link requirements. This will include the necessity to operate over a versatile set of wireless channels ranging from indoor to outdoor, from line-of-sight (LOS) to non-LOS, and from circularly symmetric scattering to environments which promote the clustering of scattered multipath waves. Unfortunately, many of the conventional fading models adopted in the literature to develop network models lack the flexibility to account for such disparate signal propagation mechanisms. To bridge the gap between theory and practical channels, we consider $\kappa$-$\mu$ shadowed fading, which contains as special cases, the majority of the linear fading models proposed in the open literature, including Rayleigh, Rician, Nakagami-m, Nakagami-q, One-sided Gaussian, $\kappa$-$\mu$, $\eta$-$\mu$, and Rician shadowed to name but a few. In particular, we apply an orthogonal expansion to represent the $\kappa$-$\mu$ shadowed fading distribution as a simplified series expression. Then using the series expressions with stochastic geometry, we propose an analytic framework to evaluate the average of an arbitrary function of the SINR over $\kappa$-$\mu$ shadowed fading channels. Using the proposed method, we evaluate the spectral efficiency, moments of the SINR, bit error probability and outage probability of a $K$-tier HetNet with $K$ classes of BSs, differing in terms of the transmit power, BS density, shadowing characteristics and small-scale fading. Building upon these results, we provide important new insights into the network performance of these emerging wireless applications while considering a diverse range of fading conditions and link qualities.

Device-to-device (D2D) communications are now considered as an integral part of future 5G networks which will enable direct communication between user equipment (UE) without unnecessary routing via the network infrastructure. This architecture will result in higher throughputs than conventional cellular networks, but with the increased potential for co-channel interference induced by randomly located cellular and D2D UEs. The physical channels which constitute D2D communications can be expected to be complex in nature, experiencing both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) conditions across closely located D2D pairs. As well as this, given the diverse range of operating environments, they may also be subject to clustering of the scattered multipath contribution, i.e., propagation characteristics which are quite dissimilar to conventional Rayeligh fading environments. To address these challenges, we consider two recently proposed generalized fading models, namely $\kappa-\mu$ and $\eta-\mu$, to characterize the fading behavior in D2D communications. Together, these models encompass many of the most widely encountered and utilized fading models in the literature such as Rayleigh, Rice (Nakagami-$n$), Nakagami-$m$, Hoyt (Nakagami-$q$) and One-Sided Gaussian. Using stochastic geometry we evaluate the rate and bit error probability of D2D networks under generalized fading conditions. Based on the analytical results, we present new insights into the trade-offs between the reliability, rate, and mode selection under realistic operating conditions. Our results suggest that D2D mode achieves higher rates over cellular link at the expense of a higher bit error probability. Due to the increasing demand on user data rates, future wireless communication networks require higher spectral efficiency. To reach higher spectral efficiencies, wireless network technologies collaborate and construct a seamless interconnection between multiple tiers of architectures at the cost of increased co-channel interference. To evaluate the performance of the co-channel transmission based communication, we propose a new metric for area spectral efficiency (ASE) of interference limited Ad-hoc network by assuming that the nodes are randomly distributed according to a Poisson point processes (PPP). We introduce a utility function, U = ASE/delay and derive the optimal ALOHA transmission probability p and the SIR threshold \tau that jointly maximize the ASE and minimize the local delay. Future wireless networks are expected to be a convergence of many diverse network technologies and architectures, such as cellular networks, wireless local area networks, sensor networks, and device to device communications. Through cooperation between dissimilar wireless devices, this new combined network topology promises to unlock ever larger data rates and provide truly ubiquitous coverage for end users, as well as enabling higher spectral efficiency. However, it also increases the risk of co-channel interference and introduces the possibility of correlation in the aggregated interference that not only impacts the communication performance, but also makes the associated mathematical analysis much more complex. To address this problem and evaluate the communication performance of cooperative relay networks, we adopt a stochastic geometry based approach by assuming that the interfering nodes are randomly distributed according to a Poisson point process (PPP). We also use a random medium access protocol to counteract the effects of interference correlation. Using this approach, we derive novel closed-form expressions for the successful transmission probability and local delay of a relay network with correlated interference. As well as this, we find the optimal transmission probability $p$ that jointly maximizes the successful transmission probability and minimizes the local delay. Future wireless networks are required to support 1000 times higher data rate, than the current LTE standard. In order to meet the ever increasing demand, it is inevitable that, future wireless networks will have to develop seamless interconnection between multiple technologies. A manifestation of this idea is the collaboration among different types of network tiers such as macro and small cells, leading to the so-called heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Researchers have used stochastic geometry to analyze such networks and understand their real potential. Unsurprisingly, it has been revealed that interference has a detrimental effect on performance, especially if not modeled properly. Interference can be correlated in space and/or time, which has been overlooked in the past. For instance, it is normally assumed that the nodes are located completely independent of each other and follow a homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP), which is not necessarily true in real networks since the node locations are spatially dependent. In addition, the interference correlation created by correlated stochastic processes has mostly been ignored. To this end, we take a different approach in modeling the interference where we use non-PPP, as well as we study the impact of spatial and temporal correlation on the performance of HetNets. To illustrate the impact of correlation on performance, we consider three case studies from real-life scenarios. Specifically, we use massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) to understand the impact of spatial correlation; we use the random medium access protocol to examine the temporal correlation; and we use cooperative relay networks to illustrate the spatial-temporal correlation.
