Abstract Background Previous studies demonstrated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) plays an important role in regulating lipid metabolism, but the relationship between the two is controversial. Meanwhile, it has not been reported in a population with major depressive disorder (MDD). Methods We divided 1718 first-episode and drug naïve patients with MDD into a TSH abnormal group (TSH-AB) and a TSH normal group (TSH-NOR). The participants in the two groups were assessed by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) and the positive subscale of Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. The patients’ blood was tested for TSH, free T3, free T4, fasting blood glucose, lipid indexes and body mass index was recorded. Results The participants in the TSH-AB group had significantly higher HAMD scores, HAMA scores and total scores of positive symptoms, as well as higher incidence of suicide attempts than those in the TSH-NOR group, accompanied by significantly higher thyroglobulin antibodies, thyroid peroxidase antibodies, fasting blood glucose values, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels compared with those of TSH-NOR patients. However, the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) of TSH-AB patients was lower than those of TSH-NOR patients. TSH values were positively correlated with TC, TG, and LDL-C values, and negatively correlated with HDL-C value. Conclusion TSH was highly correlated with abnormal lipid metabolism in patients with MDD. The specific molecular mechanism of the relationship between TSH, lipid metabolism and the development of depression needs to be further in-depth investigation.

Abstract Calcium (Ca) is an essential mineral nutrient and plays a crucial signaling role in all living organisms. Increasing Ca content in staple foods such as rice is vital for improving Ca nutrition of humans. Here we map a quantitative trait locus that controls Ca concentration in rice grains and identify the causal gene as GCSC1 (Grain Ca and Sr Concentrations 1), which encodes a chloroplast vesicle localized homo-oligomeric protein. GCSC1 exhibits Ca2+ transport activity in heterologous assays in yeast and Xenopus laevis oocytes and is involved in the efflux of Ca2+ from the chloroplast to the cytosol. Knockout of GCSC1 results in increased chloroplast Ca concentration, lower stomatal conductance in leaves and enhanced Ca allocation to grains. Natural variation in grain Ca concentration is attributed to the variable expression of GCSC1 resulting from its promoter sequence variation. Our study identifies a chloroplast localized heavy metal-associated domain containing protein that regulates chloroplast Ca2+ efflux and provides a way to biofortify Ca in rice to benefit human nutrition.

A series of star-shaped multi-arm styrene-butadiene copolymers (S-g-SSB-6) were synthesized by living anionic polymerization, with n-butyllithium as initiator, styrene and butadiene as monomers, 2,2-di(tetra-hydrofuran-2-yl) propane as polar structure regulator and hexachlorodisilane as coupling agent. The molecular weight and its distribution, coupling arm number and coupling efficiency of S-g-SSB-6 were characterized by gel permeation chromatogram. The rheological properties of S-g-SSB-6, star-shaped multi-arm styrene-butadiene copolymer with SiCl4 as coupling agent, and linear styrene-butadiene copolymer (L-SSB) were characterized by rotational rheometer, and the effects of branched chain length and branched chain flexibility on the rheological properties of S-g-SSB-6 were also investigated. The results showed that the coupling arm numbers of S-g-SSB-6 reached 4.1, and the coupling efficiency was greater than 80%. S-g-SSB had lower melt viscosity and better fluid flow than those of L-SSB under the same weight-average molecular weight. When the branching degree was the same, the melt viscosity of S-g-SSB-6 increased with the increase of single arm molecular weight and molecular chain rigidity.

ObjectivesConsidering the importance of mental health help-seeking, researchers have closely examined the relationship between mental health literacy (MHL) and help-seeking intention (HSI). Furthermore, the high impact of stigma and the potential value of social support on HSI have been recognised. However, the relationship between these variables has not been fully tested within the context of Chinese elite athletes. This study addressed this gap by examining the relationship between MHL and HSI. Furthermore, it explored the mediating effects of public stigma, self-stigma, and social support on the relationship between MHL and HSI among Chinese elite athletes.Methods450 Chinese elite athletes (Mage = 18.12, SD = 3.20, 46.2% female) self-reported their MHL, public stigma, self-stigma, social support, and HSI. Mediation analysis was conducted using the bootstrap approach of the PROCESS macro version 3.3 of SPSS 25.ResultsThe results showed a significant positive correlation between MHL and HSI (r = 0.348). Resilience is regarded as a psychological variable facilitating successful and positive aging. Combined with active aging, mind-body intervention and aerobic exercises have been frequently examined to determine their capacity to promote active and successful aging. In this study, three groups of older adults participated in a 16-week intervention, with resistance training and Tai Chi as the active control group. The effects on resilience, functional fitness, and quality of life were measured immediately after the intervention and 12 weeks later. Results (n = 141)indicated that resistance training participants had significant differences in upper limb muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and fat percentage while Tai Chi participants showed improvement in lower limb muscles and aerobic ability. Both groups significantly reduced BMI and significant differences in the within-subject effect. Moreover, participants only showed a significant between-group effect on muscle strength, aerobic endurance, and dynamic balance in the pre-test versus the post-test. Results indicated a prominent level of positive and self-related successful aging among participants, thus indicating that other factors impacted less on their level of resilience and health-related quality of life. However, the research outcomes still demonstrate the better effect of Tai Chi on older adults’ psychological outcomes. It can also be expected that other self-related factors might have affected the effect of resistance training.Trial registration: The trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov PRS (Trial ID: NCT04690465; date first posted: 30/12/2020).

The durability of post-tensioned concrete (PTC) bridge structures has been greatly threatened by the corrosion of steel strands, especially in the case of insufficient grouting. In this paper, the effect of grouting quality on flexural behavior of corroded post-tensioned concrete (CPTC) beams is experimentally investigated with two groups of T-beams, i.e., five fully grouted beams in Group A and five partially grouted beams in Group B. Results indicate that when the mass loss of steel strands in Group A ranges from 0 % to 10.47 %, the cracking load decreases by 5.8821.57 %, and the ultimate bearing capacity decreases by 5.45–30.45 %. While for Group B, when the mass loss of steel strands ranges from 0 % to 14.26 %, the cracking load decreases by 3.75–25.00 %, and the ultimate bearing capacity decreases by 7.41–44.91 %. It is observed that as the degree of corrosion increases, both cracking load and ultimate bearing capacity of the beam gradually deteriorate, with the flexural capacity of partially grouted beams deteriorating faster. Built on this and with the model of bond reduction coefficient, an analytical method is proposed to predict the flexural capacity of CPTC beams under different grouting conditions. The developed method provides good predictions compared with experimental results of current study and from literature, paving the way for accurate assessment of the flexural bearing capacity of PTC beams with different grouting qualities in corrosive environments.

Summary: Background: Despite numerous studies having evaluated the associations between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and risk of specific cancers other than anogenital tract and oropharyngeal, the findings are inconsistent and the quality of evidence has not been systematically quantified. We aimed to summarise the existing evidence as well as to evaluate the strength and credibility of these associations. Methods: We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses of observational studies. PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science were searched from inception to March 2024. Studies with systematic reviews and meta-analyses that examined associations between HPV or HPV-associated genotypes infection and specific cancers were eligible for this review. The quality of the methodology was evaluated using A Measurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR). The credibility of the evidence was assessed using GRADE. The protocol was preregistered with PROSPERO (CRD42023439070). Findings: The umbrella review identified 31 eligible studies reporting 87 associations with meta-analytic estimates, including 1191 individual studies with 336,195 participants. Of those, 29 (93.5%) studies were rated as over moderate quality by AMSTAR. Only one association indicating HPV-18 infection associated with an increased risk of breast cancer (odds ratio [OR] = 3.48, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.24–5.41) was graded as convincing evidence. There were five unique outcomes identified as highly suggestive evidence, including HPV infection increased the risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OR = 7.03, 95% CI = 3.87–12.76), oesophageal cancer (OR = 3.32, 95% CI = 2.54–4.34), oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (OR = 2.69, 95% CI = 2.05–3.54), lung cancer (OR = 3.60, 95% CI = 2.59–5.01), and breast cancer (OR = 6.26, 95% CI = 4.35–9.00). According to GRADE, one association was classified as high, indicating that compared with the controls in normal tissues, HPV infection was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Interpretation: The umbrella review synthesised up-to-date observational evidence on HPV infection with the risk of breast cancer, oral squamous cell carcinoma, oesophageal cancer, oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and lung cancer. Further larger prospective cohort studies are needed to verify the associations, providing public health recommendations for prevention of disease. IntroductionElite athletes' help-seeking on mental health might be influenced by their mental health literacy (MHL) and mental health experiences. The current study aimed to explore the MHL, experiences and help-seeking behaviours among elite athletes using a qualitative approach.MethodsFace-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted among 20 Chinese elite athletes, 12 coaches, and 5 team officials. Interview data was analyzed using content analysis.ResultsSeven main themes emerged from the analysis. The current study revealed that Chinese elite athletes suffered from various mental health issues and athletes' MHL levels, help-seeking attitudes and intentions, Chinese sports environments, and Chinese cultural background could impact their help-seeking behaviours.ConclusionSupport for Chinese elite athletes' mental health and help-seeking requires improvement.

IntroductionBacteria and archaea are important components in shallow lake ecosystems and are crucial for biogeochemical cycling. While the submerged macrophyte loss is widespread in shallow lakes, the effect on the bacteria and archaea in the sediment and water is not yet widely understood.MethodsIn this study, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to explore the bacteria and archaea in samples taken from the sediment and water in the submerged macrophyte abundant (MA) and submerged macrophyte loss (ML) areas of Caohai Lake, Guizhou, China.ResultsThe results showed that the dominant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi in the sediment; the dominant phyla were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Bacteroidota in the water. The dominant archaea in sediment and water were the same, in the order of Crenarchaeota, Thermoplasmatota, and Halobacterota. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analyses showed that bacterial and archaeal community structures in the water were significantly affected by the loss of submerged macrophytes, but not by significant changes in the sediment. This suggests that the loss of submerged macrophytes has a stronger effect on the bacterial and archaeal community structures in water than in sediment. Furthermore, plant biomass (PB) was the key factor significantly influencing the bacterial community structure in water, while total nitrogen (TN) was the main factor significantly influencing the archaeal community structure in water. The loss of submerged macrophytes did not significantly affect the alpha diversity of the bacterial and archaeal communities in either the sediment or water. Based on network analyses, we found that the loss of submerged macrophytes reduced the connectivity and complexity of bacterial patterns in sediment and water. For archaea, network associations were stronger for MA network than for ML network in sediment, but network complexity for archaea in water was not significantly different between the two areas.DiscussionThis study assesses the impacts of submerged macrophyte loss on bacteria and archaea in lakes from microbial perspective, which can help to provide further theoretical basis for microbiological research and submerged macrophytes restoration in shallow lakes.

Walking is widely recognized as one of the most common and effective forms of physical activity, particularly for older adults. This study examined the comparative effects of two types of walking interventions, including supervised group-based intervention (SGBI) and non-supervised individual-based intervention (NSIBI), on frailty syndrome, cognitive functions or skills, and health-related quality of life among sedentary older Saudi individuals. A 15-week double-blinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT) including three groups (two were intervention groups while the other was the control group) was conducted among older adults who were inactive to examine the effect of different forms of walking interventions on frailty syndrome, cognitive functions, and health-related quality of life. A total of 107 participants, including 65 males and 42 females, were divided into three groups, which include SGBI, NSIBI, and the control group. Frailty syndrome was measured using the physical performance test (PPT), while cognitive function and health-related quality of life were assessed using the Mini-mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Short Form 36 (SF 36) health survey questionnaire. One-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with the pre- and post-tests were performed for within- and between-group differences. while post-test data for the control group participants were absent due to the change in elderly center regulation, and they were excluded from the analysis. Hence, the comparison was stated only between the intervention groups. Both of the intervention groups (SGBI and NSIBI) showed significant within-subject differences in the Physical Function subscale of the health-related quality of life scale only, with F(1,20) = 23.03, p < 0.001, and F(1,18) = 27.22, p < 0.001, respectively. On the other hand, the Physical Performance Test revealed significant [F(2,51) = 9.21, p < 0.001] between-group differences in the post-test based on the baseline values. In addition, the average step count of older adults was increased from 4000 steps per session to around 7000 steps per session in the intervention group. The average heart rate of the NSIBI group did not show a visible change, and the resting heart rate of both groups showed a slightly declining trend throughout the intervention period. The walking intervention significantly increased participants’ physical function, which is a component of health-related quality of life and physical performance (frailty level), along with average daily step counts for older adults in Saudi Arabia. Regular engagement in the recommended level of walking is strongly advisable for Saudi Arabian older adults to maintain their overall quality of life at this stage.

Adolescents living in high-density cities may face a unique set of mental health challenges due to exposure to environmental stressors and academic pressure from competition for limited educational opportunities. It is still unclear towards the integrated effects of sufficient physical activity, reduced recreational screen time and adequate sleep duration on improving mental health and well-being among adolescents living in high-density cities. The present study aimed to investigate the associations between meeting 24-h movement guidelines and mental well-being in Chinese adolescents living in high-density cities. A total of 816 Chinese adolescents (Mage = 14.77 years, SD = 0.81) completed a self-administrated questionnaire comprising 24-h movement behaviors, mental well-being, and covariates. Linear mixed-effects models were used to for data analyses. Findings of the current study indicated that there was a positive association between the number of guidelines being met and mental well-being in adolescents after adjusting for covariates. Compared to not meeting any guidelines, adolescents who met the sleep and physical activity guidelines, or the physical activity and screen time guidelines, or all the three guidelines had a positive association with adolescent mental well-being. Our findings enhance our understanding of the relationship between compliance with 24-h movement guidelines and mental well-being among adolescents living in high-density cities.

Abstract Background Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) demographics are also changing with the increase in life expectancy in the country and the rise in the number of older Saudi Arabians. Saudi Arabia has a higher rate of physically inactive people, and most of them are between the ages of 55–64. Walking is one of the most prevalent forms of physical activity in Saudi Arabia and the study showed that most people prefer walking for recreational and health benefits. Therefore, the purpose of the proposed study is to compare the effects of supervised group-based walking and non-supervised individual-based walking interventions on frailty, cognitive function and quality of life among inactive older adults in Saudi Arabia. Method This study will apply a three-group (2 intervention groups and 1 control group), double-blinded, randomized controlled trial (RCT) to examine the effect of different forms of walking interventions on Saudi Arabia older adults’ frailty, cognitive function and quality of life immediately after a 16-week intervention, as well as the residual effects 12 weeks after completion of the interventions. Discussion This study aims to determine whether supervised group walking and non-supervised individual walking lead to different effects. Given the limited evidence in the literature regarding Saudi Arabia older adults’ physical fitness and health, it is worthwhile to explore the effect of walking, as well as the forms of walking on improving the overall physical fitness and psychological status of older adults in Saudi Arabia. The findings of the current study could also create awareness of the government and the general public in Saudi Arabia of the ageing problems and the effective ways of achieving better intervention results.
